prabhāsa-tīrthaṃ samprāpya vṛṣṇayaḥ pāṇḍavās tathā। kim akurvan kathāś caiṣāṃ kās tatra āsan tapa-odhana ॥03-119-1॥
[प्रभासतीर्थम् (prabhāsa-tīrtham) - the holy place Prabhāsa; सम्प्राप्य (samprāpya) - having reached; वृष्णयः (vṛṣṇayaḥ) - the Vṛṣṇis; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; तथा (tathā) - also; किम् (kim) - what; अकुर्वन् (akurvan) - did (they do); कथाः (kathāḥ) - accounts; stories; च (ca) - and; एषाम् (eṣām) - of them; काः (kāḥ) - which; what; तत्र (tatra) - there; आसन् (āsan) - were; तपोधन (tapa-odhana) - O ascetic rich in penance;]
(Having reached the holy place Prabhāsa, the Vṛṣṇis and also the Pāṇḍavas—what did (they) do? And what stories of them were there, O ascetic rich in penance?)
Having reached the holy place Prabhāsa, what did the Vṛṣṇis and the Pāṇḍavas do? And what stories of theirs were there, O ascetic rich in penance? (03-119-1)
ते हि सर्वे महात्मानः सर्वशास्त्रविशारदाः। वृष्णयः पाण्डवाश्चैव सुहृदश्च परस्परम् ॥०३-११९-२॥
te hi sarve mahātmānaḥ sarvaśāstraviśāradāḥ। vṛṣṇayaḥ pāṇḍavāścaiva suhṛdaśca parasparam ॥03-119-2॥
[ते (te) - they (those); हि (hi) - for; सर्वे (sarve) - all; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled ones; सर्वशास्त्रविशारदाः (sarvaśāstraviśāradāḥ) - adept in all śāstras; वृष्णयः (vṛṣṇayaḥ) - the Vṛṣṇis (descendants of Vṛṣṇi); पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; च (ca) - and; परस्परम् (parasparam) - each other;]
(They for all great-souled ones adept in all śāstras, the Vṛṣṇis, the Pāṇḍavas and indeed friends and each other.)
For they are all great-souled and adept in all śāstras—the Vṛṣṇis, the Pāṇḍavas, and truly, friends to each other. (03-119-2)

प्रभासतीर्थं सम्प्राप्य पुण्यं तीर्थं महोदधेः। वृष्णयः पाण्डवान्वीरान्परिवार्योपतस्थिरे ॥०३-११९-३॥
prabhāsatīrthaṃ samprāpya puṇyaṃ tīrthaṃ mahodadheḥ। vṛṣṇayaḥ pāṇḍavānvīrānparivāryopatasthire ॥03-119-3॥
[प्रभासतीर्थं (prabhāsatīrtham) - Prabhāsa sacred place; सम्प्राप्य (samprāpya) - having reached; पुण्यं (puṇyam) - holy; तीर्थं (tīrtham) - pilgrimage site; महोदधेः (mahodadheḥ) - of the great ocean; वृष्णयः (vṛṣṇayaḥ) - the Vṛṣṇis; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; वीरान् (vīrān) - the heroes; परिवार्य (parivārya) - having surrounded; उपतस्थिरे (upatasthire) - approached;]
(Having reached Prabhāsa sacred place, holy pilgrimage site of the great ocean, the Vṛṣṇis, having surrounded the heroic Pāṇḍavas, approached.)
The Vṛṣṇis, having reached the holy pilgrimage place Prabhāsa by the great ocean, came up to the heroic Pāṇḍavas after gathering around them. (03-119-3)
ततो गोक्षीरकुन्देन्दुमृणालरजतप्रभः। वनमाली हली रामो बभाषे पुष्करेक्षणम् ॥०३-११९-४॥
tato gokṣīrakundendumṛṇālarajataprabhaḥ। vanamālī halī rāmo babhāṣe puṣkarekṣaṇam॥03-119-4॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गो-क्षीर-कुन्द-इन्दु-मृणाल-रजत-प्रभः (go-kṣīra-kunda-indu-mṛṇāla-rajata-prabhaḥ) - having the radiance of cow's milk, jasmine, moon, lotus-stalk, and silver; वनमाली (vanamālī) - wearing a forest garland; हली (halī) - plough-wielder; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; बभाषे (babhāṣe) - spoke; पुष्करेक्षणम् (puṣkarekṣaṇam) - to lotus-eyed;]
(Then, having the radiance of cow's milk, jasmine, moon, lotus-stalk, and silver, wearing a garland of forest flowers, plough-wielder Rāma spoke to the lotus-eyed.)
Then Rāma, the plough-wielder, whose radiance was like cow's milk, jasmine, the moon, lotus-stalk, and silver, wearing a forest garland, spoke to the lotus-eyed one. (03-119-4)
न कृष्ण धर्मश्चरितो भवाय; जन्तोरधर्मश्च पराभवाय। युधिष्ठिरो यत्र जटी महात्मा; वनाश्रयः क्लिश्यति चीरवासाः ॥०३-११९-५॥
na kṛṣṇa dharmaś carito bhavāya; jantor adharmaś ca parābhavāya. yudhiṣṭhiro yatra jaṭī mahātmā; vanāśrayaḥ kliśyati cīravāsāḥ ॥03-119-5॥
[न (na) - not; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa (the prince); धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; चरितः (caritaḥ) - acted; भवाय (bhavāya) - for welfare; जन्तोः (jantoḥ) - of being (creature); अधर्मः (adharmaḥ) - unrighteousness; च (ca) - and; पराभवाय (parābhavāya) - for defeat (ruin); युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira (proper noun); यत्र (yatra) - where; जटी (jaṭī) - the matted-haired; महात्मा (mahātmā) - great-souled (noble); वनाश्रयः (vanāśrayaḥ) - dwelling in forest; क्लिश्यति (kliśyati) - suffers; चीरवासाः (cīravāsāḥ) - wearing bark-garments;]
(Not Kṛṣṇa, righteousness is acted for welfare; of creature unrighteousness and for defeat. Yudhiṣṭhira where the matted-haired great-souled, forest-dweller suffers, clad in bark-cloth.)
Where Yudhiṣṭhira, the matted-haired, great-souled one, dwelling in the forest and wearing bark garments, suffers, there neither is righteousness practiced by Kṛṣṇa for the welfare of beings, nor unrighteousness for their ruin. (03-119-5)
दुर्योधनश्चापि महीं प्रशास्ति; न चास्य भूमिर्विवरं ददाति। धर्मादधर्मश्चरितो गरीया; नितीव मन्येत नरोऽल्पबुद्धिः ॥०३-११९-६॥
duryodhanaś cāpi mahīṁ praśāsti; na cāsya bhūmir vivaraṁ dadāti. dharmād adharmaś carito garīyā; nitīva manyeta naro'lpabuddhiḥ ॥03-119-6॥
[दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; (proper noun); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; महीं (mahīm) - earth; (object of rule); प्रशास्ति (praśāsti) - rules over; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - for him; भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - earth; विवरं (vivaraṁ) - opening; (refuge, gap); ददाति (dadāti) - gives; धर्मात् (dharmāt) - than dharma; (virtue, righteousness); अधर्मः (adharmaḥ) - adharma; (non-righteousness); चरितः (caritaḥ) - practised; गरीयः (garīyaḥ) - greater; निति (niti) - surely; इव (iva) - as if; मन्येत (manyeta) - may think; नरः (naraḥ) - man; अल्पबुद्धिः (alpabuddhiḥ) - of little intelligence;]
(Duryodhana also rules the earth; and the earth gives not an opening for him. Adharma practised is greater than dharma; surely as if may think a man of little intelligence.)
Duryodhana, too, rules the earth, but the earth grants him no refuge. One of little intelligence may think that unrighteousness practiced is greater than righteousness. (03-119-6)
दुर्योधने चापि विवर्धमाने; युधिष्ठिरे चासुख आत्तराज्ये। किं न्वद्य कर्तव्यमिति प्रजाभिः; शङ्का मिथः सञ्जनिता नराणाम् ॥०३-११९-७॥
duryodhhane cāpi vivardhamāne; yudhiṣṭhire cāsukha āttarājye. kiṁ nv-adya kartavyam-iti prajābhiḥ; śaṅkā mithaḥ sañjanitā narāṇām ॥03-119-7॥
[दुर्योधने (duryodhhane) - in Duryodhana; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; विवर्धमाने (vivardhamāne) - increasing; युधिष्ठिरे (yudhiṣṭhire) - in Yudhiṣṭhira; च (ca) - and; असुख (asukha) - unhappy; आत्तराज्ये (āttarājye) - having seized the kingdom; किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - now; अद्य (adya) - today; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - should be done; इति (iti) - thus; प्रजाभिः (prajābhiḥ) - by the people; शङ्का (śaṅkā) - doubt; मिथः (mithaḥ) - among each other; सञ्जनिता (sañjanitā) - arisen; नराणाम् (narāṇām) - of men;]
(In Duryodhana also increasing; in Yudhiṣṭhira, unhappy, having seized the kingdom. What now today should be done—thus by the people; doubt among each other has arisen of men (03-119-7))
As Duryodhana's power increased, and Yudhiṣṭhira, troubled after grasping the kingdom, the people began to wonder among themselves, "What should be done now?" Thus, doubts arose among men. (03-119-7)
अयं हि धर्मप्रभवो नरेन्द्रो; धर्मे रतः सत्यधृतिः प्रदाता। चलेद्धि राज्याच्च सुखाच्च पार्थो; धर्मादपेतश्च कथं विवर्धेत् ॥०३-११९-८॥
ayaṃ hi dharmaprabhavo narendro; dharme rataḥ satyadhṛtiḥ pradātā. caleddhi rājyācca sukhācca pārtho; dharmādapetaśca kathaṃ vivardheta ॥03-119-8॥
[अयम् (ayam) - this (person); हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मप्रभवः (dharmaprabhavaḥ) - originated from dharma; नरेन्द्रः (narendraḥ) - king; धर्मे (dharme) - in dharma; रतः (rataḥ) - devoted; सत्यधृतिः (satyadhṛtiḥ) - steadfast in truth; प्रदाता (pradātā) - giver; चलेत् (calet) - would depart; हि (hi) - indeed; राज्यात् (rājyāt) - from the kingdom; च (ca) - and; सुखात् (sukhāt) - from happiness; च (ca) - and; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna or Yudhishthira); धर्मात् (dharmāt) - from dharma; अपेतः (apetaḥ) - deprived; च (ca) - and; कथम् (katham) - how; विवर्धेत् (vivardheta) - would prosper;]
(This indeed (person), originated from dharma, the king; in dharma devoted, steadfast in truth, giver. Would indeed depart from the kingdom and from happiness, Pārtha; and deprived from dharma, how would (he) prosper?)
This king, who indeed has arisen from dharma, is devoted to dharma, steadfast in truth, and a giver. If Pārtha should abandon both the kingdom and happiness, how could he prosper, having turned away from dharma? (03-119-8)
कथं नु भीष्मश्च कृपश्च विप्रो; द्रोणश्च राजा च कुलस्य वृद्धः। प्रव्राज्य पार्थान्सुखमाप्नुवन्ति; धिक्पापबुद्धीन्भरतप्रधानान् ॥०३-११९-९॥
kathaṁ nu bhīṣmaś ca kṛpaś ca vipraḥ; droṇaś ca rājā ca kulasya vṛddhaḥ। pravrājya pārthān sukham āpnuvanti; dhik pāpabuddhīn bharatapramukhān ॥03-119-9॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; नु (nu) - indeed; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; च (ca) - and; कृपः (kṛpaḥ) - Kṛpa; च (ca) - and; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - Brāhmaṇa; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Droṇa; च (ca) - and; राजा (rājā) - king; च (ca) - and; कुलस्य (kulasya) - of the family; वृद्धः (vṛddhaḥ) - elder; प्रव्राज्य (pravrājya) - having exiled; पार्थान् (pārthān) - the sons of Pṛthā; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; आप्नुवन्ति (āpnuvanti) - they attain; धिक् (dhik) - shame; पापबुद्धीन् (pāpabuddhīn) - those with sinful minds; भरतप्रधानान् (bharatapramukhān) - chiefs of the Bhārata (clan);]
(How indeed Bhīṣma and Kṛpa, the Brāhmaṇa; Droṇa and the king and the elder of the family; having exiled the sons of Pṛthā, happiness they attain; shame, those with sinful minds, chiefs of the Bhārata (clan). (03-119-9))
How indeed do Bhīṣma, Kṛpa the Brāhmaṇa, Droṇa, the king, and the elders of the family find happiness after exiling the sons of Pṛthā? Shame on those chiefs of the Bhārata race with sinful minds. (03-119-9)
किं नाम वक्ष्यत्यवनिप्रधानः; पितॄन्समागम्य परत्र पापः। पुत्रेषु सम्यक्चरितं मयेति; पुत्रानपापानवरोप्य राज्यात् ॥०३-११९-१०॥
kiṁ nāma vakṣyaty avanipradhānaḥ; pitṝn samāgamya paratra pāpaḥ. putreṣu samyak-caritaṁ mayeti; putrān apāpān avaropya rājyāt ॥03-119-10॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नाम (nāma) - indeed; वक्ष्यति (vakṣyati) - will say; अवनिप्रधानः (avanipradhānaḥ) - the chief of the earth (king); पितॄन् (pitṝn) - ancestors; समागम्य (samāgamya) - having met; परत्र (paratra) - in the other world; पापः (pāpaḥ) - the sinner; पुत्रेषु (putreṣu) - in regard to sons; सम्यक् (samyak) - well; properly; चरितं (caritaṁ) - conducted; done; मया (mayā) - by me; इति (iti) - thus; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; अपापान् (apāpān) - innocent; sinless; अवरोप्य (avaropya) - having deprived; राज्यात् (rājyāt) - from the kingdom;]
(What indeed will the chief of the earth (king) say, having met the ancestors in the other world, being a sinner? In regard to sons, "Properly conducted has been done by me," thus, having deprived the innocent sons from the kingdom.)
What, indeed, will the king say when, as a sinner, he meets his ancestors in the other world? Concerning his sons, can he truly say, "I have acted rightly," having deprived his innocent sons of the kingdom? (03-119-10)
नासौ धिया सम्प्रतिपश्यति स्म; किं नाम कृत्वाहमचक्षुरेवम्। जातः पृथिव्यामिति पार्थिवेषु; प्रव्राज्य कौन्तेयमथापि राज्यात् ॥०३-११९-११॥
nāsau dhiyā sampratipaśyati sma; kiṁ nāma kṛtvāhamacakṣurevam. jātaḥ pṛthivyāmiti pārthiveṣu; pravrājya kaunteyamathāpi rājyāt ॥03-119-11॥
[न (na) - not; असौ (asau) - he; धिया (dhiyā) - with understanding; सम्प्रतिपश्यति (sampratipaśyati) - perceives; thoroughly sees; स्म (sma) - indeed; किं (kiṁ) - what; नाम (nāma) - indeed; (emphatic particle); कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; अहम् (aham) - I; अचक्षुः (acakṣuḥ) - blind; without eyes; एवम् (evam) - thus; जातः (jātaḥ) - born; पृथिव्याम् (pṛthivyām) - on the earth; इति (iti) - thus; पार्थिवेषु (pārthiveṣu) - among kings; प्रव्राज्य (pravrājya) - having caused to go away; having sent away; कौन्तेयम् (kaunteyam) - Kunti's son; (Yudhishthira); अथापि (athāpi) - and also; moreover; राज्यात् (rājyāt) - from the kingdom;]
(He indeed does not perceive with understanding; what indeed, having done, have I, born blind thus on earth, (done) among kings? Having sent away the son of Kunti, and also (himself) from the kingdom.)
He truly does not see with discernment; what indeed have I done, being born blind in this world among kings? I have banished the son of Kunti and also myself from the kingdom. (03-119-11)
नूनं समृद्धान्पितृलोकभूमौ; चामीकराभान्क्षितिजान्प्रफुल्लान्। विचित्रवीर्यस्य सुतः सपुत्रः; कृत्वा नृशंसं बत पश्यति स्म ॥०३-११९-१२॥
nūnaṃ samṛddhānpitṛlokabhūmau; cāmīkarābhānkṣitijānpraphullān. vicitravīryasya sutaḥ saputraḥ; kṛtvā nṛśaṃsaṃ bata paśyati sma ॥03-119-12॥
[नूनं (nūnam) - indeed; समृद्धान् (samṛddhān) - prosperous; पितृलोकभूमौ (pitṛlokabhūmau) - on the land of the world of ancestors; चामीकराभान् (cāmīkarābhān) - having the radiance of gold; क्षितिजान् (kṣitijān) - born on the earth; प्रफुल्लान् (praphullān) - blooming; विचित्रवीर्यस्य (vicitravīryasya) - of Vicitravīrya; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; सपुत्रः (saputraḥ) - with son; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; नृशंसं (nṛśaṃsaṃ) - cruel act; बत (bata) - indeed; पश्यति (paśyati) - he sees; स्म (sma) - indeed;]
(Indeed, the prosperous ones on the land of the world of ancestors, having the radiance of gold, born on the earth, blooming— of Vicitravīrya the son with (his) son, having done a cruel act, indeed, he saw indeed.)
Indeed, after committing a cruel deed, Vicitravīrya's son, together with his own son, looked upon the prosperous, blooming ones of the world of the ancestors who shone like gold, born on earth. (03-119-12)
व्यूढोत्तरांसान्पृथुलोहिताक्षा; न्नेमान्स्म पृच्छन्स शृणोति नूनम्। प्रस्थापयद्यत्स वनं ह्यशङ्को; युधिष्ठिरं सानुजमात्तशस्त्रम् ॥०३-११९-१३॥
vyūḍhottarāṁsān pṛthulohitākṣān; neman sma pṛcchans śṛṇoti nūnam। prasthāpayad yat sa vanaṁ hyaśaṅko; yudhiṣṭhiraṁ sānujam āttaśastram॥03-119-13॥
[व्यूढोत्तरांसान् (vyūḍhottarāṁsān) - with erect shoulders; पृथुलोहिताक्षान् (pṛthulohitākṣān) - having large red eyes; न् (n) - indeed; एमान् (emān) - these; स्म (sma) - indeed; पृच्छन् (pṛcchan) - asking; शृणोति (śṛṇoti) - hears; नूनम् (nūnam) - surely; प्रस्थापयत् (prasthāpayat) - was sending away; यत् (yat) - because; स (sa) - he; वनम् (vanam) - to the forest; हि (hi) - indeed; अशङ्कः (aśaṅkaḥ) - fearless; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira; सानुजम् (sānujam) - with brothers; आत्तशस्त्रम् (āttaśastram) - armed (with weapons);]
(With erect shoulders, large red eyes, indeed (he), these indeed asking, does not listen surely. He was (so) sending (them) to the forest because, indeed, fearless (of) Yudhiṣṭhira with (his) brothers armed (with weapons).)
Because he saw those with erect shoulders and large red eyes asking questions and certainly not listening, he sent Yudhiṣṭhira and his armed brothers to the forest without fear. (03-119-13)
योऽयं परेषां पृतनां समृद्धां; निरायुधो दीर्घभुजो निहन्यात्। श्रुत्वैव शब्दं हि वृकोदरस्य; मुञ्चन्ति सैन्यानि शकृत्समूत्रम् ॥०३-११९-१४॥
yo'yaṃ pareṣāṃ pṛtanāṃ samṛddhāṃ; nirāyudho dīrghabhujo nihanyāt. śrutvaiva śabdaṃ hi vṛkodarasya; muñcanti sainyāni śakṛtsamūtram ॥03-119-14॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; अयम् (ayam) - this; परेषाम् (pareṣām) - of the others; पृतनाम् (pṛtanām) - of armies; समृद्धाम् (samṛddhām) - prosperous; निरायुधः (nirāyudhaḥ) - unarmed; दीर्घभुजः (dīrghabhujaḥ) - long-armed; निहन्यात् (nihanyāt) - would slay; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; एव (eva) - indeed; शब्दम् (śabdam) - the sound; हि (hi) - indeed; वृकोदरस्य (vṛkodarasya) - of Vṛkodara; मुञ्चन्ति (muñcanti) - release; सैन्यानि (sainyāni) - armies; शकृत् (śakṛt) - feces; समूत्रम् (samūtram) - and urine;]
(Who this of others' prosperous armies, unarmed, long-armed, would slay. Hearing indeed the sound of Vṛkodara, armies release feces and urine.)
This one, who would slay the prosperous armies of others unarmed and with long arms—even just hearing the sound of Vṛkodara, the armies indeed release their feces and urine. (03-119-14)
स क्षुत्पिपासाध्वकृशस्तरस्वी; समेत्य नानायुधबाणपाणिः। वने स्मरन्वासमिमं सुघोरं; शेषं न कुर्यादिति निश्चितं मे ॥०३-११९-१५॥
sa kṣutpipāsādhvakṛśastarastvī; sametya nānāyudhabāṇapāṇiḥ। vane smaran vāsam imaṃ sughoraṃ; śeṣaṃ na kuryād iti niścitaṃ me ॥03-119-15॥
[स (sa) - he; क्षुत्पिपासा-ध्व-कृशः (kṣut-pipāsā-dhva-kṛśaḥ) - emaciated by hunger, thirst, and fatigue; तरस्वी (tarasvī) - vigorous; समेत्य (sametya) - having come; नाना-आयुध-बाण-पाणिः (nānā-āyudha-bāṇa-pāṇiḥ) - holding various weapons and arrows in (his) hand; वने (vane) - in the forest; स्मरन् (smaran) - remembering; वासम् (vāsam) - dwelling; इमम् (imam) - this; सुघोरम् (sughoram) - very terrible; शेषम् (śeṣam) - the remainder; न (na) - not; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - should do; इति (iti) - thus; निश्चितम् (niścitam) - decided; मे (me) - by me;]
(He, emaciated by hunger, thirst, and fatigue, vigorous; having come, holding various weapons and arrows in his hand; in the forest, remembering this very terrible dwelling, (the) remainder (he) should not do—thus (it is) decided by me.)
He, vigorous yet emaciated by hunger, thirst, and fatigue, having come bearing various weapons and arrows in his hand, remembering this very terrible forest dwelling, should not remain here any longer—this is my decision. (03-119-15)
न ह्यस्य वीर्येण बलेन कश्चि; त्समः पृथिव्यां भविता नरेषु। शीतोष्णवातातपकर्शिताङ्गो; न शेषमाजावसुहृत्सु कुर्यात् ॥०३-११९-१६॥
na hy asya vīryeṇa balena kaścit samaḥ pṛthivyāṃ bhavitā nareṣu. śītoṣṇa-vātātapa-karśita-aṅgaḥ na śeṣam ājāva-suhṛtsu kuryāt ॥03-119-16॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्य (asya) - his; वीर्येण (vīryeṇa) - by strength; बलेन (balena) - by power; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; समः (samaḥ) - equal; पृथिव्याम् (pṛthivyām) - on earth; भविता (bhavitā) - will be; नरेषु (nareṣu) - among men; शीतोष्णवातातपकर्शिताङ्गः (śītoṣṇa-vāta-ātapa-karśita-aṅgaḥ) - whose body is emaciated by cold, heat, wind, and sun; न (na) - not; शेषम् (śeṣam) - rest; आजावसुहृत्सु (ājāva-suhṛtsu) - among those friends who are like sheep and goats; कुर्यात् (kuryāt) - should do;]
(Not indeed by his strength and by power anyone equal on earth will be among men. Whose body is emaciated by cold, heat, wind, and sun, not the rest among sheep and goat-like friends should do.)
Verily, by his strength and power, there will be no one among men on earth who is his equal. One whose body is worn by cold, heat, wind, and sun should not place what remains among friends like sheep and goats. (3-119-16)
प्राच्यां नृपानेकरथेन जित्वा; वृकोदरः सानुचरान्रणेषु। स्वस्त्यागमद्योऽतिरथस्तरस्वी; सोऽयं वने क्लिश्यति चीरवासाः ॥०३-११९-१७॥
prācyāṃ nṛpānekaratheṇa jitvā; vṛkodaraḥ sānu-carān raṇeṣu. svasty āgamat yo 'tirathas tarasvī; so 'yaṃ vane kliśyati cīra-vāsāḥ ॥03-119-17॥
[प्राच्यां (prācyām) - in the eastern direction; नृपान् (nṛpān) - kings; एका-रथेन (eka-rathena) - with one chariot; जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Vṛkodara (Bhīma); सानुचरान् (sānu-carān) - with companions; रणेषु (raṇeṣu) - in battles; स्वस्ति (svasti) - well-being; आगमत् (āgamat) - returned; यः (yaḥ) - who; अतिरथः (atirathaḥ) - great chariot-warrior; तरस्वी (tarasvī) - swift; सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; वने (vane) - in the forest; क्लिश्यति (kliśyati) - suffers; चीरवासाः (cīra-vāsāḥ) - wearing bark garments;]
(In the east, having conquered kings with one chariot, Vṛkodara with companions in battles, well-being returned who great chariot-warrior, swift, he—this—in the forest suffers, wearing bark garments.)
Vṛkodara, who in the east conquered kings in battle accompanied by his companions with a single chariot and returned safely—he, the swift and mighty chariot-warrior, now suffers in the forest, wearing bark garments. (03-119-17)
यो दन्तकूरे व्यजयन्नृदेवा; न्समागतान्दाक्षिणात्यान्महीपान्। तं पश्यतेमं सहदेवमद्य; तपस्विनं तापसवेषरूपम् ॥०३-११९-१८॥
yo dantakūre vyajayannṛdevā; nsamāgatāndākṣiṇātyānmahīpān. taṃ paśyatemaṃ sahadevamadya; tapasvinaṃ tāpasaveṣarūpam ॥03-119-18॥
[यो (yaḥ) - who; दन्तकूरे (dantakūre) - at Dantakūra (the place named Dantakūra); विजयन् (vijayan) - having conquered; ऋदेवान् (r̥devān) - the R̥deva kings; समागतान् (samāgatān) - who had assembled; दाक्षिणात्यान् (dākṣiṇātyān) - southern; महीपान् (mahīpān) - kings; तं (taṃ) - him; पश्य (paśya) - see; ते (te) - you; इमं (imaṃ) - this; सहदेवम् (sahadevam) - Sahadeva; अद्य (adya) - today; तपस्विनं (tapasvinam) - ascetic; तापसवेषरूपम् (tāpasaveṣarūpam) - in the form of a hermit's attire;]
(Who at Dantakūra, having conquered the assembled southern kings, that him see you this Sahadeva today, ascetic in the form of a hermit's attire.)
This is Sahadeva, whom you see today as an ascetic, in the guise of a hermit—he is the one who, at Dantakūra, conquered the assembled southern kings. (03-119-18)
यः पार्थिवानेकरथेन वीरो; दिशं प्रतीचीं प्रति युद्धशौण्डः। सोऽयं वने मूलफलेन जीव; ञ्जटी चरत्यद्य मलाचिताङ्गः ॥०३-११९-१९॥
yaḥ pārthivānekarathena vīraḥ; diśaṃ pratīcīṃ prati yuddhaśauṇḍaḥ। so'yaṃ vane mūlaphalena jīvaḥ; jaṭī caratyadya malācitāṅgaḥ ॥03-119-19॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; पार्थिवान् (pārthivān) - earthly kings; एकरथेन (ekarathena) - with a single chariot; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; दिशं (diśam) - direction; प्रतीचीं (pratīcīm) - western; प्रति (prati) - towards; युद्धशौण्डः (yuddhaśauṇḍaḥ) - expert in battle; सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; वने (vane) - in the forest; मूलफलेन (mūlaphalena) - with roots and fruits; जीवन् (jīvan) - living; जटी (jaṭī) - having matted hair; चरति (carati) - wanders; अद्य (adya) - today; मलाचिताङ्गः (malācitāṅgaḥ) - with body covered in dirt;]
(Who, the hero with a single chariot, overcame earthly kings; who, the expert in battle, marched towards the western direction; he—this one—now in the forest, living on roots and fruits, with matted hair, wanders today, body covered in dirt.)
He, who was once a hero with a single chariot overpowering kings and marching west as an expert warrior, now lives in the forest, surviving on roots and fruits, with matted hair, roaming today, his body covered in dirt. (03-119-19)
सत्रे समृद्धेऽति रथस्य राज्ञो; वेदीतलादुत्पतिता सुता या। सेयं वने वासमिमं सुदुःखं; कथं सहत्यद्य सती सुखार्हा ॥०३-११९-२०॥
satre samṛddhe'ti rathasya rājño; vedītalādutpatitā sutā yā. seyaṁ vane vāsamimaṁ suduḥkhaṁ; kathaṁ sahatyadya satī sukhārhā ॥03-119-20॥
[सत्रे (satre) - in the sacrifice; समृद्धे (samṛddhe) - accomplished; fulfilled; अति (ati) - very; exceedingly; रथस्य (rathasya) - of the chariot; राज्ञो (rājño) - of the king; वेदी-तलात् (vedī-talāt) - from the altar's surface; उत्पतिता (utpatitā) - sprung forth; born; सुता (sutā) - daughter; या (yā) - who; सा-इयम् (sā-iyam) - she, this; वने (vane) - in the forest; वासम् (vāsam) - residence; dwelling; इमम् (imam) - this; सुदुःखम् (suduḥkham) - very miserable; very painful; कथम् (katham) - how; सहति (sahati) - endures; bears; अद्य (adya) - today; सती (satī) - she who is; the chaste wife; सुख-अर्हा (sukh-arhā) - worthy of happiness;]
(In the sacrifice accomplished, exceedingly, of the chariot, of the king; from the altar's surface sprung forth daughter who; she this in the forest residence this very miserable; how endures today she who is chaste worthy of happiness.)
She who was sprung forth as a daughter from the altar's surface during the great successful sacrifice of the king, how does she—this woman worthy of happiness—now endure such a miserable forest dwelling today? (03-119-20)
त्रिवर्गमुख्यस्य समीरणस्य; देवेश्वरस्याप्यथ वाश्विनोश्च। एषां सुराणां तनयाः कथं नु; वने चरन्त्यल्पसुखाः सुखार्हाः ॥०३-११९-२१॥
trivargamukhyasya samīraṇasya; deveśvarasyāpyatha vāśvinośca. eṣāṃ surāṇāṃ tanayāḥ kathaṃ nu; vane carantyalpasukhāḥ sukhārhāḥ ॥03-119-21॥
[त्रिवर्गमुख्यस्य (trivargamukhyasya) - of the foremost in the three aims (dharma, artha, kāma); समीरणस्य (samīraṇasya) - of the wind-god; देवेश्वरस्य (deveśvarasya) - of the lord of gods (Indra); अपि (api) - also; अथ (atha) - or; वा (vā) - or; अश्विनोः (aśvinoḥ) - of the Aśvins; च (ca) - and; एषां (eṣāṃ) - of these; सुराणां (surāṇām) - of gods; तनयाः (tanayāḥ) - sons; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; नु (nu) - indeed; वने (vane) - in the forest; चरन्ति (caranti) - move about; अल्पसुखाः (alpasukhāḥ) - having little happiness; सुखार्हाः (sukhārhāḥ) - worthy of happiness;]
(Of the foremost in the three aims, of the wind-god; of the lord of gods also or of the Aśvins and; of these gods, the sons, how indeed in the forest move about having little happiness, worthy of happiness.)
How is it that the sons of these gods—of the wind-god, the chief among those who pursue the three aims, of the lord of gods, or even of the Aśvins—who are worthy of happiness, move about in the forest with so little joy? (03-119-21)
जिते हि धर्मस्य सुते सभार्ये; सभ्रातृके सानुचरे निरस्ते। दुर्योधने चापि विवर्धमाने; कथं न सीदत्यवनिः सशैला ॥०३-११९-२२॥
jite hi dharmasya sute sabhārye; sabhrātṛke sānucare niraste. duryodhane cāpi vivardhamāne; kathaṁ na sīdaty avaniḥ saśailā ॥03-119-22॥
[जिते (jite) - having been conquered; हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of Dharma; सुते (sute) - son; सभार्ये (sabhārye) - with wife; सभ्रातृके (sabhrātṛke) - with brothers; सानुचरे (sānucare) - with companions; निरस्ते (niraste) - having been rejected; दुर्योधने (duryodhane) - when Duryodhana; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; विवर्धमाने (vivardhamāne) - is increasing; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; न (na) - not; सीदति (sīdati) - sinks; अवनिः (avniḥ) - the earth; सशैला (saśailā) - with mountains;]
(When the son of Dharma, with wife, with brothers, with companions, has indeed been conquered and rejected; when Duryodhana also is increasing, how does the earth with mountains not sink?)
When the son of Dharma, along with his wife, brothers, and companions, has been defeated and exiled; and Duryodhana continues to prosper—how does the earth with its mountains not sink? (03-119-22)
