(Going to sacred places, the great-souled one, the king, saw the auspicious, beautiful (places), all adorned by brahmins, here and there, O Bhārata, of the ocean.)
As he went to sacred places, the noble king saw all the auspicious and beautiful spots, adorned by brahmins here and there, O Bhārata, along the ocean. (03-118-1)
स वृत्तवांस्तेषु कृताभिषेकः; सहानुजः पार्थिवपुत्रपौत्रः। समुद्रगां पुण्यतमां प्रशस्तां; जगाम पारिक्षित पाण्डुपुत्रः ॥०३-११८-२॥

तत्रापि चाप्लुत्य महानुभावः; सन्तर्पयामास पितॄन्सुरांश्च। द्विजातिमुख्येषु धनं विसृज्य; गोदावरिं सागरगामगच्छत् ॥०३-११८-३॥

(There also and, having bathed, the great-souled one satisfied the ancestors and the gods. Among the foremost of the twice-born, having distributed wealth, to the Godāvarī going to the sea, he went.)

(Then the sinless king, having reached the ocean and the famous worldly holy places, and Agastya's sacred, pure, holy place, saw also the women's sacred bathing-places, then the hero saw.)

तत्रार्जुनस्याग्र्यधनुर्धरस्य; निशम्य तत्कर्म परैरसह्यम्। सम्पूज्यमानः परमर्षिसङ्घैः; परां मुदं पाण्डुसुतः स लेभे ॥०३-११८-५॥

(There, of Arjuna, of the foremost bow-bearer; having heard that deed by others unbearable, being honored by groups of supreme sages, supreme joy the son of Pandu, he obtained.)
There, Arjuna, the foremost wielder of the bow, having heard of his deed which others could not bear, and as he was being honored by assemblies of supreme sages, the son of Pandu attained supreme joy. (03-118-5)
स तेषु तीर्थेष्वभिषिक्तगात्रः; कृष्णासहायः सहितोऽनुजैश्च। सम्पूजयन्विक्रममर्जुनस्य; रेमे महीपालपतिः पृथिव्याम् ॥०३-११८-६॥

ततः सहस्राणि गवां प्रदाय; तीर्थेषु तेष्वम्बुधरोत्तमस्य। हृष्टः सह भ्रातृभिरर्जुनस्य; सङ्कीर्तयामास गवां प्रदानम् ॥०३-११८-७॥

(Then, having given thousands of cows at the holy places of Ambudharottama, delighted, with the brothers of Arjuna, he extolled the gifting of cows.)

स तानि तीर्थानि च सागरस्य; पुण्यानि चान्यानि बहूनि राजन्। क्रमेण गच्छन्परिपूर्णकामः; शूर्पारकं पुण्यतमं ददर्श ॥०३-११८-८॥

तत्रोदधेः कञ्चिदतीत्य देशं; ख्यातं पृथिव्यां वनमाससाद। तप्तं सुरैर्यत्र तपः पुरस्ता; दिष्टं तथा पुण्यतमैर्नरेन्द्रैः ॥०३-११८-९॥
tatrodadheḥ kañcidatītya deśaṃ; khyātaṃ pṛthivyāṃ vanamāsasāda. taptaṃ surairyatra tapaḥ purastā; diṣṭaṃ tathā puṇyatamairnarendraiḥ ॥03-118-9॥

स तत्र तामग्र्यधनुर्धरस्य; वेदीं ददर्शायतपीनबाहुः। ऋचीकपुत्रस्य तपस्विसङ्घैः; समावृतां पुण्यकृदर्चनीयाम् ॥०३-११८-१०॥

सरस्वत्याः सिद्धगणस्य चैव; पूष्णश्च ये चाप्यमरास्तथान्ये। पुण्यानि चाप्यायतनानि तेषां; ददर्श राजा सुमनोहराणि ॥०३-११८-१३॥
sarasvatyāḥ siddhagaṇasya caiva; pūṣṇaś ca ye cāpy amarās tathānye. puṇyāni cāpy āyatanāni teṣāṃ; dadarśa rājā sumanoharāṇi ॥03-118-13॥

तेषूपवासान्विविधानुपोष्य; दत्त्वा च रत्नानि महाधनानि। तीर्थेषु सर्वेषु परिप्लुताङ्गः; पुनः स शूर्पारकमाजगाम ॥०३-११८-१४॥

(In those (places), various fasts having observed, and having given jewels, great treasures, at all holy places, with body bathed, again he arrived at Shurparaka.)

(He with that holy place but of the ocean again departed together with brothers. By the twice-born on earth renowned by the great, the sacred place Prabhāsa he approached.)

tatrābhiṣiktaḥ pṛthulohitākṣaḥ; sahānujair devagaṇān pitṝṁś ca. santarpayāmāsa tathaiva kṛṣṇā; te cāpi viprāḥ saha lomaśena ॥03-118-16॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अभिषिक्तः (abhiṣiktaḥ) - anointed; पृथुलोहिताक्षः (pṛthu-lohitākṣaḥ) - broad-red-eyed; सह (saha) - together with; अनुजैः (anujaiḥ) - younger brothers; देवगणान् (devagaṇān) - divine hosts; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - ancestors; च (ca) - and; सन्तर्पयामास (santarpayāmāsa) - he satisfied; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same manner; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); ते (te) - they; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; सह (saha) - together with; लोमशेन (lomaśena) - with Lomaśa;]
(There, the broad-red-eyed (one) anointed, together with (his) younger brothers, the divine hosts and the ancestors and he satisfied; in the same manner, Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); and they also, the Brāhmaṇas along with Lomaśa.)
There, the broad-red-eyed one (Yudhiṣṭhira), upon being anointed, together with his brothers, satisfied the hosts of gods and the ancestors; Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) did likewise. The Brāhmaṇas, along with Lomaśa, were also satisfied. (03-118-16)
स द्वादशाहं जलवायुभक्षः; कुर्वन्क्षपाहःसु तदाभिषेकम्। समन्ततोऽग्नीनुपदीपयित्वा; तेपे तपो धर्मभृतां वरिष्ठः ॥०३-११८-१७॥
sa dvādaśāhaṃ jalavāyubhakṣaḥ; kurvankṣapāḥsu tad-abhiṣekam। samantato'gnīn-upadīpayitvā; tepe tapo dharmabhṛtāṃ variṣṭhaḥ ॥03-118-17॥
[स (sa) - he; द्वादशाहम् (dvādaśāham) - for twelve days; जलवायुभक्षः (jalavāyubhakṣaḥ) - subsisting on water and air; कुर्वन् (kurvan) - performing; क्षपाहःसु (kṣapāḥsu) - at night-times; तद् (tad) - that; अभिषेकम् (abhiṣekam) - anointing; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - on all sides; अग्नीन् (agnīn) - fires; उपदीपयित्वा (upadīpayitvā) - having kindled; तेपे (tepe) - practised austerity; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; धर्मभृताम् (dharmabhṛtām) - among those who uphold dharma; वरिष्ठः (variṣṭhaḥ) - the most excellent;]
(He, for twelve days, subsisting on water and air, performing that anointing at night-times, having kindled fires on all sides, practised austerity, the most excellent among those who uphold dharma.)

तमुग्रमास्थाय तपश्चरन्तं; शुश्राव रामश्च जनार्दनश्च। तौ सर्ववृष्णिप्रवरौ ससैन्यौ; युधिष्ठिरं जग्मतुराजमीढम् ॥०३-११८-१८॥
tamugramāsthāya tapaścarantaṃ; śuśrāva rāmaś ca janārdanaś ca. tau sarvavṛṣṇipravarau sasainyau; yudhiṣṭhiraṃ jagmatur ājamīḍham ॥03-118-18॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उग्रम् (ugram) - intense; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having adopted; तपः (tapaḥ) - penance; चरन्तम् (carantam) - performing; शुश्राव (śuśrāva) - heard; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rāma; च (ca) - and; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janārdana; च (ca) - and; तौ (tau) - they two; सर्ववृष्णिप्रवरौ (sarvavṛṣṇipravarau) - the foremost among all Vṛṣṇis; ससैन्यौ (sasainyau) - with armies; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira; जग्मतुः (jagmatuh) - (they two) went; आजमीढम् (ājamīḍham) - descendant of Ajamīḍha;]
(Having adopted intense penance, him performing penance, Rāma and Janārdana heard. They two, the foremost among all Vṛṣṇis, with armies, to Yudhiṣṭhira, the descendant of Ajamīḍha, went.)
Rāma and Janārdana, hearing that he was practicing intense penance, the two foremost of all the Vṛṣṇis, with their armies, went to Yudhiṣṭhira, the descendant of Ajamīḍha. (03-118-18)
ते वृष्णयः पाण्डुसुतान्समीक्ष्य; भूमौ शयानान्मलदिग्धगात्रान्। अनर्हतीं द्रौपदीं चापि दृष्ट्वा; सुदुःखिताश्चुक्रुशुरार्तनादम् ॥०३-११८-१९॥
te vṛṣṇayaḥ pāṇḍusutān samīkṣya; bhūmau śayānān maladigdhagātrān. anarhatīṃ draupadīṃ ca api dṛṣṭvā; suduḥkhitāḥ cukruśu ārta-nādam ॥03-118-19॥
[ते (te) - they; वृष्णयः (vṛṣṇayaḥ) - the Vrishni (clan members or descendants of Vṛṣṇi); पाण्डुसुतान् (pāṇḍusutān) - the sons of Pāṇḍu; समीक्ष्य (samīkṣya) - having seen; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; शयानान् (śayānān) - lying (down); मलदिग्धगात्रान् (maladigdhagātrān) - their limbs smeared with dirt; अनर्हतीं (anarhatīm) - unworthy (of such treatment); द्रौपदीं (draupadīṃ) - Draupadī; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सुदुःखिताः (suduhkhitāḥ) - very distressed; चुक्रुशुः (cukruśuḥ) - cried out; आर्तनादम् (ārta-nādam) - with cries of anguish;]
(They, the Vrishnis, having seen the sons of Pandu, lying on the ground, their limbs smeared with dirt, and also having seen Draupadi, unworthy (of such treatment), being very distressed, cried out with cries of anguish.)
The Vrishnis, seeing the Pandavas lying on the ground with their bodies smeared with dirt, and also beholding Draupadi, who deserved no such suffering, were deeply distressed and cried out in anguish. (03-118-19)
ततः स रामं च जनार्दनं च; कार्ष्णिं च साम्बं च शिनेश्च पौत्रम्। अन्यांश्च वृष्णीनुपगम्य पूजां; चक्रे यथाधर्ममदीनसत्त्वः ॥०३-११८-२०॥
tataḥ sa rāmaṃ ca janārdanaṃ ca; kārṣṇiṃ ca sāmbam ca śineś ca pautram। anyāṃś ca vṛṣṇīn upagamya pūjāṃ; cakre yathā dharmam adīnasattvaḥ ॥03-118-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; रामं (rāmaṃ) - Rāma (Balarāma); च (ca) - and; जनार्दनं (janārdanam) - Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa); च (ca) - and; कार्ष्णिं (kārṣṇim) - Kārṣṇi (son of Kṛṣṇa, i.e., Pradyumna); च (ca) - and; साम्बं (sāmbam) - Sāmba; च (ca) - and; शिनेश्च (śineś ca) - and of Śini; पौत्रम् (pautram) - the grandson; अन्यान् (anyān) - others; च (ca) - and; वृष्णीन् (vṛṣṇīn) - the Vṛṣṇis; उपगम्य (upagamya) - approaching; पूजां (pūjām) - offering worship; चक्रे (cakre) - he did; यथा (yathā) - according as; धर्मम् (dharmam) - to dharma (righteousness); अदीनसत्त्वः (adīnasattvaḥ) - with unshaken spirit;]
(Then he, Rāma and Janārdana and Kārṣṇi and Sāmba and the grandson of Śini and others, the Vṛṣṇis, approaching, worship he did as according to dharma with unshaken spirit.)
Then he approached Rāma, Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa), Kārṣṇi (Pradyumna), Sāmba, the grandson of Śini, and other Vṛṣṇis, and offered worship to them according to dharma, with an undisturbed spirit. (03-118-20)
ते चापि सर्वान्प्रतिपूज्य पार्थां; स्तैः सत्कृताः पाण्डुसुतैस्तथैव। युधिष्ठिरं सम्परिवार्य राज; न्नुपाविशन्देवगणा यथेन्द्रम् ॥०३-११८-२१॥
te cāpi sarvānp pratipūjya pārthān; staiḥ satkṛtāḥ pāṇḍusutais tathaiva। yudhiṣṭhiraṃ samparivārya rājan; nupāviśan devagaṇā yathendram ॥03-118-21॥
[ते (te) - they; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; प्रतिपूज्य (pratipūjya) - having honored; पार्थान् (pārthān) - the sons of Pṛthā (the Pāṇḍavas); स्तैः (staiḥ) - by them; सत्कृताः (satkṛtāḥ) - honored; पाण्डुसुतैः (pāṇḍusutaiḥ) - by the sons of Paṇḍu; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira; सम्परिवार्य (samparivārya) - having surrounded; राजन् (rājan) - O king; उपाविशन् (upāviśan) - they sat down near; देवगणाः (devagaṇāḥ) - companies of gods; यथा (yathā) - as; इन्द्रम् (indram) - Indra;]
(They and also, having honored all Pārthas; by them honored by the sons of Paṇḍu likewise. Yudhiṣṭhira having surrounded, O king; sat near (him) the hosts of gods as (they do) Indra.)
They too, after honoring all the sons of Pṛthā and being honored in turn by the sons of Paṇḍu, surrounded Yudhiṣṭhira, O king; and sat near him just as the hosts of gods do around Indra. (03-118-21)
तेषां स सर्वं चरितं परेषां; वने च वासं परमप्रतीतः। अस्त्रार्थमिन्द्रस्य गतं च पार्थं; कृष्णे शशंसामरराजपुत्रम् ॥०३-११८-२२॥
teṣāṃ sa sarvaṃ caritaṃ pareṣāṃ; vane ca vāsaṃ paramapratītaḥ। astrārtham indrasya gataṃ ca pārthaṃ; kṛṣṇe śaśaṃsa amararāja-putram ॥03-118-22॥
[तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; स (sa) - he; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; चरितं (caritaṃ) - deeds; परेषां (pareṣāṃ) - of others; वने (vane) - in the forest; च (ca) - and; वासं (vāsaṃ) - dwelling; परमप्रतीतः (paramapratītaḥ) - fully convinced; अस्त्रार्थम् (astrārtham) - for the sake of divine weapons; इन्द्रस्य (indrasya) - of Indra; गतं (gataṃ) - gone; च (ca) - and; पार्थं (pārthaṃ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - to Kṛṣṇa; शशंस (śaśaṃsa) - reported; अमरराजपुत्रम् (amararāja-putram) - the son of the king of the immortals (Indra);]
(He, fully convinced, reported all the deeds of others to Kṛṣṇa—the dwelling in the forest, and that Pārtha, the son of the king of the immortals (Indra), had gone for the sake of divine weapons.)
He, thoroughly convinced, related to Kṛṣṇa all the deeds of the others—their dwelling in the forest and how Pārtha, the son of the king of the immortals, had gone to Indra for obtaining divine weapons. (03-118-22)
श्रुत्वा तु ते तस्य वचः प्रतीता; स्तांश्चापि दृष्ट्वा सुकृशानतीव। नेत्रोद्भवं संमुमुचुर्दशार्हा; दुःखार्तिजं वारि महानुभावाः ॥०३-११८-२३॥
śrutvā tu te tasya vacaḥ pratītāḥ; tāṃś ca api dṛṣṭvā sukṛśān atīva। netra-udbhavam saṃmumucuḥ daśārhāḥ; duḥkha-ārtijaṃ vāri mahānubhāvāḥ ॥03-118-23॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - they; तस्य (tasya) - his; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; प्रतीता; (pratītāḥ) - understanding; तान् (tān) - them; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सुकृशान् (sukṛśān) - very emaciated; अतीव। (atīva) - exceedingly; नेत्रोद्भवम् (netra-udbhavam) - arising from the eyes; संमुमुचुः (saṃmumucuḥ) - they released; दशार्हाः; (daśārhāḥ) - Daśārhas (the Vrishnis, i.e., Krishna and his kin); दुःखार्तिजम् (duḥkha-ārtijam) - produced by pain and distress; वारि (vāri) - water; महानुभावाः (mahānubhāvāḥ) - great-souled ones;]
(Having heard but they his words, understanding, them also having seen very emaciated exceedingly, arising from the eyes released Daśārhas, pain-distress-produced water, great-souled ones.)
But having heard his words, and understanding, when they saw them exceedingly emaciated, the Daśārhas—great-souled ones—shed water (tears), arising from the eyes, produced by pain and distress. (03-118-23)
