कानि चाभ्यवहार्याणि तत्र तेषां महात्मनाम्। वसतां लोकवीराणामासंस्तद्ब्रूहि सत्तम ॥०३-१५७-२॥
kāni cābhyavahāryāṇi tatra teṣāṃ mahātmanām। vasatāṃ lokavīrāṇām āsaṃs tad brūhi sattama ॥03-157-2॥

(Which and eatables there, of those great souls, of the dwelling world-heroes, were— that tell, O best.)
O most excellent one, tell (me) which eatables were there for those great souls, the heroic ones dwelling (there). (3-157-2)
विस्तरेण च मे शंस भीमसेनपराक्रमम्। यद्यच्चक्रे महाबाहुस्तस्मिन्हैमवते गिरौ ॥ न खल्वासीत्पुनर्युद्धं तस्य यक्षैर्द्विजोत्तम ॥०३-१५७-३॥
vistareṇa ca me śaṁsa bhīmasenaparākramam। yadyaccakre mahābāhustasmin haimavate girau॥ na khalvāsīt punaryuddhaṁ tasya yakṣairdvijottama॥03-157-3॥

(In detail and to me relate Bhīmasena's valor; whatever he did, the mighty-armed, in that Himalayan mountain. Not indeed was again battle for him with the Yakṣas, O best of twice-born (03-157-3).)
Tell me in detail about Bhīmasena's valor; whatever the mighty-armed one did on that Himalayan mountain. After that, there was certainly no further battle for him with the Yakṣas, O best of twice-born. (03-157-3)
कच्चित्समागमस्तेषामासीद्वैश्रवणेन च। तत्र ह्यायाति धनद आर्ष्टिषेणो यथाब्रवीत् ॥०३-१५७-४॥
kaccit samāgamas teṣām āsīd vaiśravaṇena ca। tatra hy āyāti dhanada ārṣṭiṣeṇo yathābravīt॥03-157-4॥
[कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether perhaps; समागमः (samāgamaḥ) - meeting; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; वैश्रवणेन (vaiśravaṇena) - with Vaiśravaṇa; च (ca) - and; तत्र (tatra) - there; हि (hi) - indeed; आयाति (āyāti) - arrives; धनद (dhanada) - Dhanada (name for Kubera; giver of wealth); आर्ष्टिषेणः (ārṣṭiṣeṇaḥ) - Ārṣṭiṣeṇa (name of a sage); यथा (yathā) - as; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he spoke;]
(Whether perhaps a meeting of them was with Vaiśravaṇa and there indeed arrives Dhanada (Kubera), Ārṣṭiṣeṇa as he spoke.)
Was there indeed a meeting of theirs with Vaiśravaṇa? There, Dhanada (Kubera) and Ārṣṭiṣeṇa arrived just as he had spoken. (03-157-4)
एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं विस्तरेण तपोधन। न हि मे शृण्वतस्तृप्तिरस्ति तेषां विचेष्टितम् ॥०३-१५७-५॥
etadicchāmyahaṃ śrotuṃ vistareṇa tapodhana। na hi me śṛṇvatastṛptirasti teṣāṃ viceṣṭitam ॥03-157-5॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - (I) desire; अहम् (aham) - I; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; विस्तरेण (vistareṇa) - in detail; तपोधन (tapodhana) - O possessor of penance; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - for; मे (me) - to me; शृण्वतः (śṛṇvataḥ) - listening; तृप्तिः (tṛptiḥ) - satisfaction; अस्ति (asti) - is; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; विचेष्टितम् (viceṣṭitam) - deeds;]
(This I desire I to hear in detail, O possessor of penance. Not for me, while listening, satisfaction is of their deeds.)
O ascetic, I wish to hear all this from you in detail; for, while I listen, I do not find satisfaction with regard to their deeds. (03-157-5)

एतदात्महितं श्रुत्वा तस्याप्रतिमतेजसः। शासनं सततं चक्रुस्तथैव भरतर्षभाः ॥०३-१५७-६॥
etad-ātma-hitaṃ śrutvā tasyāpratima-tejasaḥ। śāsanaṃ satataṃ cakrus tathaiva bharatarṣabhāḥ ॥03-157-6॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; आत्महितम् (ātma-hitam) - beneficial to oneself; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तस्य (tasya) - of him; अप्रतिमतेजसः (apratima-tejasaḥ) - of unmatched splendor; शासनम् (śāsanam) - command; सततम् (satatam) - always; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - they performed; तथा एव (tathā eva) - just so; भरतर्षभाः (bharatarṣabhāḥ) - the foremost of the Bharatas;]
(Having heard this beneficial-to-themselves, of him of unmatched splendor, the Bharata bulls always performed the command just so.)
Having heard this instruction, which was for their own benefit and belonged to the one of incomparable brilliance, the foremost among the Bharatas always carried out his command just as directed. (03-157-6)
भुञ्जाना मुनिभोज्यानि रसवन्ति फलानि च। शुद्धबाणहतानां च मृगाणां पिशितान्यपि ॥०३-१५७-७॥
bhuñjānā munibhojyāni rasavanti phalāni ca। śuddhabāṇahatānāṃ ca mṛgāṇāṃ piśitāny api॥03-157-7॥
[भुञ्जाना (bhuñjānā) - eating; मुनिभोज्यानि (munibhojyāni) - fit to be eaten by sages; रसवन्ति (rasavanti) - full of juice; फलानि (phalāni) - fruits; च (ca) - and; शुद्धबाणहतानां (śuddhabāṇahatānāṃ) - struck by pure (ritually purified) arrows; च (ca) - and; मृगाणां (mṛgāṇāṃ) - of deer; पिशितानि (piśitāni) - flesh; अपि (api) - even;]
(Eating fruits full of juice fit for sages and even the flesh of deer struck by pure arrows.)
They eat fruits full of juice that are fit for sages, and even the flesh of deer struck by purified arrows. (3-157-7)
मेध्यानि हिमवत्पृष्ठे मधूनि विविधानि च। एवं ते न्यवसंस्तत्र पाण्डवा भरतर्षभाः ॥०३-१५७-८॥
medhyāni himavatpṛṣṭhe madhūni vividhāni ca। evaṃ te nyavasaṃstatra pāṇḍavā bharatarṣabhāḥ॥03-157-8॥
[मेध्यानि (medhyāni) - pure (fit for sacrifice); हिमवत्पृष्ठे (himavat-pṛṣṭhe) - on the back (slopes) of the Himavat (Himalayas); मधूनि (madhūni) - honeys; विविधानि (vividhāni) - various; च (ca) - and; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; ते (te) - they; न्यवसंस्तत्र (nyavasaṃs tatra) - they dwelt there; पाण्डवा (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; भरतर्षभाः (bharata-ṛṣabhāḥ) - the best of the Bharatas;]
(Pure honeys and various (kinds) on the back of the Himavat, thus they dwelt there, the Pāṇḍavas, the best of the Bharatas.)
The Pāṇḍavas, the best among the Bharatas, thus lived there on the slopes of the Himalayas, subsisting on pure and various kinds of honey. (03-157-8)
तथा निवसतां तेषां पञ्चमं वर्षमभ्यगात्। शृण्वतां लोमशोक्तानि वाक्यानि विविधानि च ॥०३-१५७-९॥
tathā nivasatāṃ teṣāṃ pañcamaṃ varṣam abhyagāt। śṛṇvatāṃ lomaśoktāni vākyāni vividhāni ca॥03-157-9॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; in this manner; निवसताम् (nivasatām) - (of those) dwelling; abiding; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; पञ्चमम् (pañcamam) - fifth; वर्षम् (varṣam) - year; अभ्यगात् (abhyagāt) - approached; attained; शृण्वताम् (śṛṇvatām) - listening; hearing; लोमशोक्तानि (lomaśoktāni) - uttered by Lomaśa; वाक्यानि (vākyāni) - statements; sentences; विविधानि (vividhāni) - various; of many kinds; च (ca) - and;]
(Thus, for those dwelling, the fifth year approached. Listening, to the statements uttered by Lomaśa and various (other) statements as well.)
Thus, as they dwelt there, the fifth year came to them, as they listened to the various statements uttered by Lomaśa and others. (03-157-9)
कृत्यकाल उपस्थास्य इति चोक्त्वा घटोत्कचः। राक्षसैः सहितः सर्वैः पूर्वमेव गतः प्रभो ॥०३-१५७-१०॥
kṛtyakāla upasthāsya iti coktʋā ghaṭotkacaḥ। rākṣasaiḥ sahitaḥ sarvaiḥ pūrvam-eva gataḥ prabho ॥03-157-10॥
[कृत्यकाल (kṛtyakāla) - at the proper time for the task; उपस्थास्य (upasthāsya) - I will approach; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; घटोत्कचः (ghaṭotkacaḥ) - Ghaṭotkaca; राक्षसैः (rākṣasaiḥ) - with the rākṣasas; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - along with; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - all; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; एव (eva) - indeed; गतः (gataḥ) - went; प्रभो (prabho) - O Lord;]
(At the proper time for the task, "I will approach," thus having spoken, Ghaṭotkaca, with all the rākṣasas, along with (them), indeed before (others), went, O Lord.)
Having said, "I will approach at the proper time," Ghaṭotkaca, along with all the rākṣasas, went ahead beforehand, O Lord. (03-157-10)
आर्ष्टिषेणाश्रमे तेषां वसतां वै महात्मनाम्। अगच्छन्बहवो मासाः पश्यतां महदद्भुतम् ॥०३-१५७-११॥
ārṣṭiṣeṇāśrame teṣāṃ vasatāṃ vai mahātmanām। agacchanbahavo māsāḥ paśyatāṃ mahadadbhutam ॥03-157-11॥
[आर्ष्टिषेणआश्रमेम् (ārṣṭiṣeṇa-āśrame) - in the hermitage of Ṛṣṭiṣeṇa; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; वसताम् (vasatām) - dwelling; वै (vai) - indeed; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of the great-souled; अगच्छन् (agacchan) - passed; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; मासाः (māsāḥ) - months; पश्यताम् (paśyatām) - while watching; महद्-अद्भुतम् (mahad-adbhutam) - a great wonder;]
(In the hermitage of Ṛṣṭiṣeṇa, of them dwelling indeed, the great-souled, passed many months while watching a great wonder.)
While those great-souled ones dwelled in the hermitage of Ṛṣṭiṣeṇa, many months passed as they beheld a great wonder. (03-157-11)
तैस्तत्र रममाणैश्च विहरद्भिश्च पाण्डवैः। प्रीतिमन्तो महाभागा मुनयश्चारणास्तथा ॥०३-१५७-१२॥
tais tatra ramamāṇaiś ca viharadbhiś ca pāṇḍavaiḥ। prītimanto mahābhāgā munayaś cāraṇās tathā ॥03-157-12॥
[तैः (taiḥ) - by those; तत्र (tatra) - there; रममाणैः (ramamāṇaiḥ) - enjoying; च (ca) - and; विहरद्भिः (viharadbhiḥ) - sporting; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवैः (pāṇḍavaiḥ) - by the Pāṇḍavas; प्रीतिमन्तः (prītimantaḥ) - affectionate; महाभागाः (mahābhāgāḥ) - greatly fortunate; मुनयः (munayaḥ) - sages; चारणाः (cāraṇāḥ) - Cāraṇas (celestial bards); तथा (tathā) - likewise;]
(By those Pāṇḍavas, enjoying there and sporting, the affectionate, greatly fortunate sages and Cāraṇas likewise (were there).)
With those Pāṇḍavas, who were enjoying themselves and sporting there, the affectionate, greatly fortunate sages and the Cāraṇas (celestial singers) were also present. (03-157-12)
आजग्मुः पाण्डवान्द्रष्टुं सिद्धात्मानो यतव्रताः। तैस्तैः सह कथाश्चक्रुर्दिव्या भरतसत्तमाः ॥०३-१५७-१३॥
ājagmuḥ pāṇḍavān draṣṭuṃ siddhātmānaḥ yatavratāḥ। tais taiḥ saha kathāś cakrur divyā bharatasattamāḥ ॥03-157-13॥
[आजग्मुः (ājagmuḥ) - they came (towards); पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; सिद्धात्मानः (siddhātmānaḥ) - perfected souls; यतव्रताः (yatavratāḥ) - ascetics devoted to vows; तैः (taiḥ) - with them; तैः (taiḥ) - with those; सह (saha) - together; कथाः (kathāḥ) - conversations; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - they made/performed; दिव्याः (divyāḥ) - divine; भरतसत्तमाः (bharatasattamāḥ) - best of the Bharatas;]
(The perfected souls, devoted to vows, came to see the Pāṇḍavas; with them together, the best of the Bharatas made divine conversations.)
Perfected beings devoted to vows came to see the Pāṇḍavas; together with them, the best of the Bharatas engaged in divine conversations. (03-157-13)
ततः कतिपयाहस्य महाह्रदनिवासिनम्। ऋद्धिमन्तं महानागं सुपर्णः सहसाहरत् ॥०३-१५७-१४॥
tataḥ katipayāhasya mahāhradnivāsinam | ṛddhimantaṃ mahānāgaṃ suparṇaḥ sahasāharat ॥03-157-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कतिपयाहस्य (katipayāhasya) - of a few days; महाह्रदनिवासिनम् (mahāhradanivāsinam) - dwelling in a great lake; ऋद्धिमन्तं (ṛddhimantam) - endowed with prosperity; महानागं (mahānāgam) - great serpent; सुपर्णः (suparṇaḥ) - Suparṇa (Garuda); सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; आहरत् (āharat) - carried away;]
(Then, of a few days, the one dwelling in a great lake, the prosperous great serpent, Suparṇa suddenly carried away.)
Then, after a few days, Suparṇa (Garuda) suddenly carried away the prosperous great serpent who was dwelling in the great lake. (03-157-14)
प्राकम्पत महाशैलः प्रामृद्यन्त महाद्रुमाः। ददृशुः सर्वभूतानि पाण्डवाश्च तदद्भुतम् ॥०३-१५७-१५॥
prākampata mahāśailaḥ prāmṛdyanta mahādrumāḥ। dadṛśuḥ sarvabhūtāni pāṇḍavāś ca tadadbhutam ॥03-157-15॥
[प्राकम्पत (prākampata) - trembled; महाशैलः (mahāśailaḥ) - great mountain; प्रामृद्यन्त (prāmṛdyanta) - were crushed; महाद्रुमाः (mahādrumāḥ) - great trees; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - saw; सर्वभूतानि (sarvabhūtāni) - all beings; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; च (ca) - and; तदद्भुतम् (tadadbhutam) - that wonder;]
(The great mountain trembled; the great trees were crushed. All beings and the Pāṇḍavas saw that wonder.)
The great mountain trembled, the mighty trees were crushed, and all beings along with the Pāṇḍavas witnessed that marvelous event. (03-157-15)
ततः शैलोत्तमस्याग्रात्पाण्डवान्प्रति मारुतः। अवहत्सर्वमाल्यानि गन्धवन्ति शुभानि च ॥०३-१५७-१६॥
tataḥ śailottamasya agrāt pāṇḍavān prati mārutaḥ। avahat sarvamālyāni gandhavanti śubhāni ca ॥03-157-16॥

(Then, from the summit of the best of mountains, towards the Pāṇḍavas, the wind carried all garlands, fragrant and auspicious and.)
Then, from the summit of the foremost mountain, the wind blew all the fragrant and auspicious garlands towards the Pāṇḍavas. (03-157-16)
तत्र पुष्पाणि दिव्यानि सुहृद्भिः सह पाण्डवाः। ददृशुः पञ्च वर्णानि द्रौपदी च यशस्विनी ॥०३-१५७-१७॥
tatra puṣpāṇi divyāni suhṛdbhiḥ saha pāṇḍavāḥ। dadṛśuḥ pañca varṇāni draupadī ca yaśasvinī ॥03-157-17॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; पुष्पाणि (puṣpāṇi) - flowers; दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; सुहृद्भिः (suhṛdbhiḥ) - with friends; सह (saha) - together with; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - saw; पञ्च (pañca) - five; वर्णानि (varṇāni) - colors; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; च (ca) - and; यशस्विनी (yaśasvinī) - the illustrious one;]
(There divine flowers together with friends the Pāṇḍavas saw, five colors, Draupadī and the illustrious one.)
There, the Pāṇḍavas together with friends saw divine flowers of five colors, and Draupadī, the illustrious one, saw them too. (03-157-17)
भीमसेनं ततः कृष्णा काले वचनमब्रवीत्। विविक्ते पर्वतोद्देशे सुखासीनं महाभुजम् ॥०३-१५७-१८॥
bhīmasenaṁ tataḥ kṛṣṇā kāle vacanam abravīt । vivikte parvatoddeśe sukhāsīnaṁ mahābhujam ॥03-157-18॥
[भीमसेनं (bhīmasenam) - Bhīmasena (the son of Vāyu); ततः (tataḥ) - then; from there; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); काले (kāle) - at the (right) time; in the appropriate moment; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; said; विविक्ते (vivikte) - in a solitary; secluded; पर्वतोद्देशे (parvatoddeśe) - in a mountain region; in the area of a mountain; सुखासीनं (sukhāsīnam) - (him who was) comfortably seated; महाभुजम् (mahābhujam) - great-armed; having mighty arms;]
(To Bhīmasena, then Kṛṣṇā at the (right) time spoke the word; in a solitary mountain region (to him) comfortably seated, great-armed.)
Then, at the right time, Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) spoke to Bhīmasena, who was comfortably seated in a secluded mountain region, his arms mighty. (03-157-18)
सुपर्णानिलवेगेन श्वसनेन महाबलात्। पञ्चवर्णानि पात्यन्ते पुष्पाणि भरतर्षभ ॥ प्रत्यक्षं सर्वभूतानां नदीमश्वरथां प्रति ॥०३-१५७-१९॥
suparṇānilavegena śvasanena mahābalāt। pañcavarṇāni pātyante puṣpāṇi bharatarṣabha ॥ pratyakṣaṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ nadīmaśvarathāṃ prati ॥03-157-19॥
[सुपर्ण (suparṇa) - Garuda; (lit. well-winged); अनिल (anila) - wind; वेगेन (vegena) - by the speed; श्वसनेन (śvasanena) - by the blowing; महाबलात् (mahābalāt) - from great strength; पञ्चवर्णानि (pañcavarṇāni) - five-colored; पात्यन्ते (pātyante) - are made to fall; पुष्पाणि (puṣpāṇi) - flowers; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; प्रत्यक्षं (pratyakṣaṃ) - manifestly; visibly; सर्वभूतानां (sarvabhūtānāṃ) - of all beings; नदीमश्वरथां (nadīmaśvarathām) - river, animal, chariot; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(By the speed of Garuda-wind, by the blowing from great strength, five-colored flowers are made to fall, O best of the Bharatas. Manifestly for all beings, towards the river, animal, and chariot.)
O best of the Bharatas, by the swift speed and great force of the Garuda-like wind, five-colored flowers are brought down, clearly, for all beings, towards the river, animals, and chariots. (03-157-19)
खाण्डवे सत्यसन्धेन भ्रात्रा तव नरेश्वर। गन्धर्वोरगरक्षांसि वासवश्च निवारितः ॥ हता मायाविनश्चोग्रा धनुः प्राप्तं च गाण्डिवम् ॥०३-१५७-२०॥
khāṇḍave satyasaṃdhena bhrātrā tava nareśvara। gandharvoragarakṣāṃsi vāsavaś ca nivāritaḥ॥ hatā māyāvinaś cogrā dhanuḥ prāptaṃ ca gāṇḍivam॥03-157-20॥

(In Khāṇḍava, by the truthful brother of yours, O lord of men, Gandharvas, serpents, Rākṣasas, and even Vāsava were turned back; fierce magicians were slain, and the bow Gāṇḍīva was gained.)
O lord of men, in Khāṇḍava, by your truthful brother, Gandharvas, serpents, Rākṣasas, and even Indra were repelled; fierce magicians were slain, and the Gāṇḍīva bow was obtained. (03-157-20)
तवापि सुमहत्तेजो महद्बाहुबलं च ते। अविषह्यमनाधृष्यं शतक्रतुबलोपमम् ॥०३-१५७-२१॥
tavāpi sumahat tejo mahad bāhubalaṃ ca te। aviṣahyam anādhṛṣyaṃ śatakratu-balopamam ॥03-157-21॥
[तवापि (tavāpi) - your also; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; तेजः (tejaḥ) - brilliance; महत् (mahat) - great; बाहुबलं (bāhubalaṃ) - arm strength; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; अविषह्यम् (aviṣahyam) - irresistible; अनाधृष्यम् (anādhṛṣyam) - unassailable; शतक्रतुबलोपमम् (śatakratu-balopamam) - equal to Indra's (Śatakratu) strength;]
(Your also very great brilliance, great arm strength and your irresistible, unassailable, equal to Indra's strength.)
Your brilliance is very great, and your arm strength is immense; it is irresistible, unassailable, and equal to the strength of Indra. (03-157-21)
त्वद्बाहुबलवेगेन त्रासिताः सर्वराक्षसाः। हित्वा शैलं प्रपद्यन्तां भीमसेन दिशो दश ॥०३-१५७-२२॥
tvad-bāhu-bala-vegena trāsitāḥ sarva-rākṣasāḥ। hitvā śailaṃ prapadyantāṃ bhīmasena diśo daśa ॥03-157-22॥

(By the force of your arm's strength, all the rākṣasas, having been frightened, abandoning the mountain, have gone forth, Bhīmasena, to the ten directions.)
By the force of your arm's strength, Bhīmasena, all the rākṣasas, frightened, abandoned the mountain and rushed off in all ten directions. (03-157-22)
ततः शैलोत्तमस्याग्रं चित्रमाल्यधरं शिवम्। व्यपेतभयसंमोहाः पश्यन्तु सुहृदस्तव ॥०३-१५७-२३॥
tataḥ śailottamasya agraṃ citramālyadharaṃ śivam। vyapetabhayasaṃmohāḥ paśyantu suhṛdas tava ॥03-157-23॥

(Then of the best mountain peak wearing wonderful garlands, the auspicious one, free from fear and delusion, let your friends see.)
Then, let your friends, free from fear and delusion, behold the auspicious peak of the best mountain, adorned with wonderful garlands. (03-157-23)
एवं प्रणिहितं भीम चिरात्प्रभृति मे मनः। द्रष्टुमिच्छामि शैलाग्रं त्वद्बाहुबलमाश्रिता ॥०३-१५७-२४॥
evaṁ praṇihitaṁ bhīma cirātprabhṛti me manaḥ। draṣṭumicchāmi śailāgraṁ tvadbāhubalamāśritā ॥03-157-24॥

(Thus directed, O Bhīma, from long ago my mind (is); to see I wish the mountain summit, having resorted to your arm's strength.)
Thus, O Bhīma, my mind has been set for a long time; I wish to see the mountain summit, relying on your arm's strength. (03-157-24)
ततः क्षिप्तमिवात्मानं द्रौपद्या स परन्तपः। नामृष्यत महाबाहुः प्रहारमिव सद्गवः ॥०३-१५७-२५॥
tataḥ kṣiptam ivātmānaṃ draupadyā sa parantapaḥ। nāmṛṣyata mahābāhuḥ prahāram iva sadgavaḥ॥03-157-25॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; क्षिप्तम् (kṣiptam) - cast; इव (iva) - as if; आत्मानं (ātmānam) - himself; द्रौपद्या (draupadyā) - by Draupadī; सः (saḥ) - he; परन्तपः (parantapaḥ) - scorcher of foes; न (na) - not; अमृष्यत (amṛṣyata) - endured; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; प्रहारम् (prahāram) - blow; इव (iva) - as if; सद्गवः (sadgavaḥ) - a good ox;]
(Then, as if cast himself by Draupadī, he, the scorcher of foes, the mighty-armed, did not endure (it), as a good ox (does not endure) a blow.)
Then, as if hurled by Draupadī herself, that mighty-armed scorcher of foes could not endure it, just as a fine ox cannot endure a blow. (03-157-25)
सिंहर्षभगतिः श्रीमानुदारः कनकप्रभः। मनस्वी बलवान्दृप्तो मानी शूरश्च पाण्डवः ॥०३-१५७-२६॥
siṃharṣabhagatiḥ śrīmānudāraḥ kanakaprabhaḥ। manasvī balavāndṛpto mānī śūraśca pāṇḍavaḥ॥03-157-26॥
[सिंहर्षभगतिः (siṃharṣabhagatiḥ) - going with the gait of a lion; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - possessed of fortune; उदारः (udāraḥ) - generous; कनकप्रभः (kanakaprabhaḥ) - having brightness of gold; मनस्वी (manasvī) - possessed of spirit; बलवान् (balavān) - possessed of strength; दृप्तः (dṛptaḥ) - proud; मानी (mānī) - high-minded; शूरः (śūraḥ) - courageous; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the son of Pāṇḍu;]
(Going with the gait of a lion, possessed of fortune, generous, having brightness of gold, possessed of spirit, possessed of strength, proud, high-minded, courageous, and the son of Pāṇḍu.)
The son of Pāṇḍu, who walks with the gait of a lion, is fortunate, generous, possesses a golden radiance, spirited, strong, proud, high-minded, and courageous. (03-157-26)
लोहिताक्षः पृथुव्यंसो मत्तवारणविक्रमः। सिंहदंष्ट्रो बृहत्स्कन्धः शालपोत इवोद्गतः ॥०३-१५७-२७॥
lohitàkṣaḥ pṛthu-vyaṃsaḥ matta-vāraṇa-vikramaḥ। siṃha-daṃṣṭraḥ bṛhat-skandhaḥ śāla-pota iva udgataḥ ॥03-157-27॥

महात्मा चारुसर्वाङ्गः कम्बुग्रीवो महाभुजः। रुक्मपृष्ठं धनुः खड्गं तूणांश्चापि परामृशत् ॥०३-१५७-२८॥
mahātmā cāru-sarvāṅgaḥ kambugrīvaḥ mahābhujaḥ। rukma-pṛṣṭhaṃ dhanuḥ khaḍgaṃ tūṇāṃś cāpi parāmṛśat ॥03-157-28॥
[महात्मा (mahātmā) - great-souled; चारुसर्वाङ्गः (cāru-sarvāṅgaḥ) - with beautiful all-limbs; कम्बुग्रीवः (kambugrīvaḥ) - conch-shaped-necked; महाभुजः (mahābhujaḥ) - mighty-armed; रुक्मपृष्ठं (rukma-pṛṣṭham) - gold-backed; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; खड्गं (khaḍgam) - sword; तूणान् (tūṇān) - quivers; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; परामृशत् (parāmṛśat) - touched;]
(The great-souled, with beautiful limbs, conch-shaped-necked, mighty-armed, touched the gold-backed bow, sword, and also quivers.)
The great-souled one, possessing beautiful limbs, a conch-shaped neck, and mighty arms, touched his gold-backed bow, sword, and also the quivers. (03-157-28)
केसरीव यथोत्सिक्तः प्रभिन्न इव वारणः। व्यपेतभयसंमोहः शैलमभ्यपतद्बली ॥०३-१५७-२९॥
kesarīva yathotsiktaḥ prabhinna iva vāraṇaḥ। vyapetabhayasaṃmohaḥ śailamabhyapatadbālī ॥03-157-29॥
[केसरीव (kesarīva) - like a lion; यथोत्सिक्तः (yathotsiktaḥ) - as if proud; प्रभिन्न (prabhinna) - broken; इव (iva) - as if; वारणः (vāraṇaḥ) - an elephant; व्यपेतभयसंमोहः (vyapetabhayasaṃmohaḥ) - one whose fear and delusion have been driven away; शैलम् (śailam) - mountain; अभ्यपतद्द् (abhyapatad) - rushed toward; बली (balī) - the strong one;]
(Like a lion, as if proud, like a broken (but) as if (he was) an elephant, one whose fear and delusion have been dispelled, the strong one rushed toward the mountain.)
Like a lion, appearing with pride, just as a broken elephant would, the powerful one, whose fear and confusion had been cast aside, rushed toward the mountain. (03-157-29)
तं मृगेन्द्रमिवायान्तं प्रभिन्नमिव वारणम्। ददृशुः सर्वभूतानि बाणखड्गधनुर्धरम् ॥०३-१५७-३०॥
taṁ mṛgendram ivāyāntaṁ prabhinnam iva vāraṇam। dadṛśuḥ sarvabhūtāni bāṇa-khaḍga-dhanuḥ-dharam ॥03-157-30॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; मृगेन्द्रम् (mṛgendram) - like a lion; इव (iva) - as if; आयान्तम् (āyāntam) - approaching; प्रभिन्नम् (prabhinnam) - like a broken; इव (iva) - as if; वारणम् (vāraṇam) - elephant; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - saw; सर्वभूतानि (sarvabhūtāni) - all beings; बाणखड्गधनुर्धरम् (bāṇa-khaḍga-dhanuḥ-dharam) - bearing arrows, sword, and bow;]
(Him as a lion as if approaching, like a broken as if elephant, saw all beings bearing arrows, sword, and bow.)
All beings saw him, approaching like a lion, like an enraged elephant, bearing arrows, sword, and bow. (03-157-30)
द्रौपद्या वर्धयन्हर्षं गदामादाय पाण्डवः। व्यपेतभयसंमोहः शैलराजं समाविशत् ॥०३-१५७-३१॥
draupadyā vardhayan harṣaṁ gadām ādāya pāṇḍavaḥ। vyapeta-bhaya-sammohaḥ śailarājaṁ samāviśat ॥03-157-31॥
[द्रौपद्या (draupadyā) - towards Draupadī; वर्धयन् (vardhayan) - increasing; हर्षं (harṣam) - joy; गदाम् (gadām) - the mace; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pāṇḍava; व्यपेत (vyapeta) - freed from; भय (bhaya) - fear; संमोहः (sammohaḥ) - delusion; शैलराजं (śailarājam) - the mountain-king; समाविशत् (samāviśat) - entered;]
(The Pāṇḍava, having taken the mace, increasing joy towards Draupadī, freed from fear and delusion, entered the mountain-king.)
The Pāṇḍava, having taken up his mace and feeling joy for Draupadī—free from fear and confusion—entered the king of mountains. (03-157-31)
न ग्लानिर्न च कातर्यं न वैक्लव्यं न मत्सरः। कदाचिज्जुषते पार्थमात्मजं मातरिश्वनः ॥०३-१५७-३२॥
na glānirna ca kātaryaṃ na vaiklavyaṃ na matsaraḥ। kadācijjuṣate pārthamātmajaṃ mātariśvanaḥ॥03-157-32॥
[न (na) - not; ग्लानिः (glāniḥ) - dejection; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; कातर्यम् (kātaryam) - cowardice; न (na) - not; वैक्लव्यम् (vaiklavyaṃ) - weakness; न (na) - not; मत्सरः (matsaraḥ) - envy; कदा।चित् (kadā.cit) - at any time; जुषते (juṣate) - embraces; पार्थम् (pārtham) - son of Pṛthā; आत्मजम् (ātmajam) - son; मातरिश्वनः (mātariśvanaḥ) - of Mātariśvan (Wind god);]
(Not dejection, not and cowardice, not weakness, not envy at any time embraces the son of Pṛthā, the son of Mātariśvan.)
Neither dejection nor cowardice, nor weakness nor envy ever affect the son of Pṛthā, the son of Mātariśvan. (03-157-32)
तदेकायनमासाद्य विषमं भीमदर्शनम्। बहुतालोच्छ्रयं शृङ्गमारुरोह महाबलः ॥०३-१५७-३३॥
tad-ekāyanam-āsādya viṣamaṃ bhīma-darśanam। bahutāla-ucchrayaṃ śṛṅgam āruroha mahā-balaḥ॥03-157-33॥
[तत् (tad) - that; एकायनम् (ekāyanam) - single path; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; विषमम् (viṣamam) - uneven; भीमदर्शनम् (bhīma-darśanam) - fearful appearance; बहुतालोच्छ्रयम् (bahutāla-ucchrayam) - having great height; शृङ्गम् (śṛṅgam) - peak; आरुरोह (āruroha) - ascended; महाबलः (mahā-balaḥ) - the very strong one;]
(That single path having reached, uneven, fearful in appearance, of great height, the peak, ascended, the very strong one.)
Having reached that single, uneven path, fearful in appearance and of great height, the very strong one ascended the peak. (03-157-33)
स किंनरमहानागमुनिगन्धर्वराक्षसान्। हर्षयन्पर्वतस्याग्रमाससाद महाबलः ॥०३-१५७-३४॥
sa kiṁnaramahānāgamunigandharvarākṣasān। harṣayan parvatasya agram āsasāda mahābalaḥ ॥03-157-34॥
[स (sa) - he; किंनर-महानाग-मुनि-गन्धर्व-राक्षसान् (kiṁnara-mahānāga-muni-gandharva-rākṣasān) - Kinnaras, great nāgas, sages, gandharvas, rāksasas; हर्षयन् (harṣayan) - rejoicing; पर्वतस्य (parvatasya) - of the mountain; अग्रम् (agram) - peak; आससाद (āsasāda) - approached; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - the mighty one;]
(He, rejoicing the Kinnaras, great Nāgas, sages, Gandharvas, and Rākṣasas, approached the peak of the mountain, the mighty one.)
The mighty one, delighting the Kinnaras, great Nāgas, sages, Gandharvas, and Rākṣasas, approached the summit of the mountain. (03-157-34)
तत्र वैश्रवणावासं ददर्श भरतर्षभः। काञ्चनैः स्फाटिकाकारैर्वेश्मभिः समलङ्कृतम् ॥०३-१५७-३५॥
tatra vaiśravaṇāvāsaṃ dadarśa bharatarṣabhaḥ। kāñcanaiḥ sphāṭikākārair veśmabhiḥ samalaṅkṛtam ॥03-157-35॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; वैश्रवणावासं (vaiśravaṇāvāsam) - Vaiśravaṇa's abode; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; भरतर्षभः (bharatarṣabhaḥ) - bull among the Bharatas; काञ्चनैः (kāñcanaiḥ) - with gold; स्फाटिकाकारैः (sphāṭikākārair) - having forms of crystal; वेश्मभिः (veśmabhiḥ) - by mansions; समलङ्कृतम् (samalaṅkṛtam) - completely adorned;]
(There, Vaiśravaṇa's abode he saw, O bull among the Bharatas, completely adorned with mansions having forms of gold and crystal.)
There, the bull among the Bharatas saw the abode of Vaiśravaṇa, magnificently adorned with mansions of gold and crystal. (03-157-35)
मोदयन्सर्वभूतानि गन्धमादनसम्भवः। सर्वगन्धवहस्तत्र मारुतः सुसुखो ववौ ॥०३-१५७-३६॥
modayan sarvabhūtāni gandhamādanasambhavaḥ। sarvagandhavahas tatra mārutaḥ susukho vavau ॥03-157-36॥
[मोदयन् (modayan) - making glad; सर्वभूतानि (sarvabhūtāni) - all beings; गन्धमादनसम्भवः (gandhamādanasambhavaḥ) - arisen from Gandhamādana (mountain); सर्वगन्धवहः (sarvagandhavahaḥ) - bearer of all fragrances; तत्र (tatra) - there; मारुतः (mārutaḥ) - the wind; सुसुखः (susukhaḥ) - very pleasant; ववौ (vavau) - blew;]
(Making glad all beings, arisen from Gandhamādana, the bearer of all fragrances, there the wind very pleasant blew.)
A very pleasant wind, carrying every fragrance and sprung from Gandhamādana, blew there, gladdening all beings. (03-157-36)
चित्रा विविधवर्णाभाश्चित्रमञ्जरिधारिणः। अचिन्त्या विविधास्तत्र द्रुमाः परमशोभनाः ॥०३-१५७-३७॥
citrā vividhavarṇābhāś citramañjaridhāriṇaḥ। acintyā vividhās tatra drumāḥ paramaśobhanāḥ ॥03-157-37॥
[चित्रा (citrā) - variegated; wonderful; विविधवर्णाभाः (vividhavarṇābhāḥ) - of various colored forms; having diverse hues; चित्रमञ्जरिधारिणः (citramañjaridhāriṇaḥ) - bearing wonderful flower-clusters; अचिन्त्या (acintyā) - inconceivable; unimaginable; विविधाः (vividhāḥ) - various; तत्र (tatra) - there; द्रुमाः (drumāḥ) - trees; परमशोभनाः (paramaśobhanāḥ) - supremely beautiful;]
(Variegated, of diverse colored appearances, bearing wonderful flower-clusters; inconceivable, various, there trees supremely beautiful.)
There are various trees with variegated, diverse-colored appearances, bearing wonderful flower-clusters and supreme beauty, that are inconceivably splendid. (03-157-37)
रत्नजालपरिक्षिप्तं चित्रमाल्यधरं शिवम्। राक्षसाधिपतेः स्थानं ददर्श भरतर्षभः ॥०३-१५७-३८॥
ratnajālaparikṣiptaṃ citramālyadharaṃ śivam। rākṣasādhipateḥ sthānaṃ dadarśa bharatarṣabhaḥ ॥03-157-38॥

गदाखड्गधनुष्पाणिः समभित्यक्तजीवितः। भीमसेनो महाबाहुस्तस्थौ गिरिरिवाचलः ॥०३-१५७-३९॥
gadākhaḍgadhanuṣpāṇiḥ samabhityaktajīvitaḥ। bhīmaseno mahābāhustasthau giririvācalaḥ ॥03-157-39॥
[गदा-खड्ग-धनुष्-पाणिः (gadā-khaḍga-dhanuṣ-pāṇiḥ) - with mace, sword, and bow in hand; सम्-अभि-त्यक्त-जीवितः (sam-abhi-tyakta-jīvitaḥ) - having together entirely abandoned life; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; तस्थौ (tasthau) - stood; गिरिः-इव-अचलः (giriḥ-iva-acalaḥ) - like a mountain, unmoving;]

ततः शङ्खमुपाध्मासीद्द्विषतां लोमहर्षणम्। ज्याघोषतलघोषं च कृत्वा भूतान्यमोहयत् ॥०३-१५७-४०॥
tataḥ śaṅkham upādhmāsīd dviṣatāṃ lomaharṣaṇam। jyāghoṣatalaghoṣaṃ ca kṛtvā bhūtāni amohayat॥03-157-40॥

Though all the rākṣasas threatened, roared, and made great noise, none of them saw Bhīmasena become bewildered. (03-157-49)
ते शरैः क्षतसर्वाङ्गा भीमसेनभयार्दिताः। भीममार्तस्वरं चक्रुर्विप्रकीर्णमहायुधाः ॥०३-१५७-५०॥

Becoming aware of the news of the mace duel, that powerful Bhīma, of terrible prowess, foiled his blow. (03-157-60)
ततः शक्तिं महाघोरां रुक्मदण्डामयस्मयीम्। तस्मिन्नेवान्तरे धीमान्प्रजहाराथ राक्षसः ॥०३-१५७-६१॥
tataḥ śaktiṃ mahāghorāṃ rukmadaṇḍāmayasmayīm। tasminnevāntare dhīmān prajahārātha rākṣasaḥ॥03-157-61॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; शक्तिं (śaktiṃ) - spear; महाघोरां (mahāghorāṃ) - very terrible; रुक्मदण्डाम् (rukmadaṇḍām) - with a golden shaft; अयस्मयीम् (ayasmayīm) - made of iron; तस्मिन्न् (tasmin) - in that; एव (eva) - indeed; अन्तरे (antare) - while (in the interval); धीमान् (dhīmān) - the wise; प्रजहार (prajahāra) - hurled; अथ (atha) - then; राक्षसः (rākṣasaḥ) - the demon;]
(Then the demon, the wise one, hurled a spear, very terrible, with a golden shaft, made of iron, in that very interval.)
Then, in that very moment, the wise demon hurled a most terrible iron spear with a golden shaft. (03-157-61)
सा भुजं भीमनिर्ह्रादा भित्त्वा भीमस्य दक्षिणम्। साग्निज्वाला महारौद्रा पपात सहसा भुवि ॥०३-१५७-६२॥
sā bhujaṃ bhīma-nirhrādā bhittvā bhīmasya dakṣiṇam। sā-agni-jvālā mahā-raudrā papāta sahasā bhuvi॥03-157-62॥

(She, the arm with a terrible roar, having pierced Bhīma's right (arm), she with a fiery flame, very fierce, fell suddenly on the earth.)
She—the arm, roaring terribly, having pierced Bhīma’s right arm and covered in fiery flames, very fiercely and suddenly fell to the earth. (03-157-62)
सोऽतिविद्धो महेष्वासः शक्त्यामितपराक्रमः। गदां जग्राह कौरव्यो गदायुद्धविशारदः ॥०३-१५७-६३॥
so'tividdho maheṣvāsaḥ śaktyāmitaparākramaḥ। gadāṃ jagrāha kauravyo gadāyuddhaviśāradaḥ॥03-157-63॥

तां प्रगृह्योन्नदन्भीमः सर्वशैक्यायसीं गदाम्। तरसा सोऽभिदुद्राव मणिमन्तं महाबलम् ॥०३-१५७-६४॥
tāṃ pragṛhyonnadan bhīmaḥ sarvaśaikyāyasīṃ gadām। tarasā so'bhidudrāva maṇimantaṃ mahābalam॥03-157-64॥

dīpyamānaṃ mahāśūlaṃ pragṛhya maṇimān api। prāhiṇod bhīmasenāya vegena mahatā nadan ॥03-157-65॥

भङ्क्त्वा शूलं गदाग्रेण गदायुद्धविशारदः। अभिदुद्राव तं तूर्णं गरुत्मानिव पन्नगम् ॥०३-१५७-६६॥
bhaṅktvā śūlaṃ gadāgreṇa gadāyuddhaviśāradaḥ। abhidudrāva taṃ tūrṇaṃ garutmān iva pannagam ॥03-157-66॥

सोऽन्तरिक्षमभिप्लुत्य विधूय सहसा गदाम्। प्रचिक्षेप महाबाहुर्विनद्य रणमूर्धनि ॥०३-१५७-६७॥
so'ntarikṣam abhiplutya vidhūya sahasā gadām। pracikṣepa mahābāhur vinadya raṇamūrdhani ॥03-157-67॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अन्तरिक्षम् (antarikṣam) - sky; अभिप्लुत्य (abhiplutya) - having leapt over; विधूय (vidhūya) - shaking off; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; गदाम् (gadām) - mace; प्रचिक्षेप (pracakṣepa) - threw; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed (he); विनद्यम् (vinadya) - roaring; रणमूर्धनि (raṇamūrdhani) - on the battle-field; ॥०३-१५७-६७॥ (॥03-157-67॥) - (3-157-67);]
(He, having leapt over the sky, shaking off the mace suddenly, threw (it), the mighty-armed one, roaring, on the battle-field.)
He, the mighty-armed, leaping into the sky, suddenly shook off his mace and, with a roar, hurled it on the battlefield. (03-157-67)
सेन्द्राशनिरिवेन्द्रेण विसृष्टा वातरंहसा। हत्वा रक्षः क्षितिं प्राप्य कृत्येव निपपात ह ॥०३-१५७-६८॥
sendrāśanirivendreṇa visṛṣṭā vātaraṃhasā| hatvā rakṣaḥ kṣitiṃ prāpya kṛtyeva nipapāta ha ॥03-157-68॥
[सेन्द्राशनि (sendrāśani) - with (the) Indra's thunderbolt; इव (iva) - like; इन्द्रेण (indreṇa) - by Indra; विसृष्टा (visṛṣṭā) - launched; वातरंहसा (vātaraṃhasā) - by (the) swift one (wind); हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; रक्षः (rakṣaḥ) - (the) demon; क्षितिं (kṣitim) - earth; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; कृत्या (kṛtyā) - like a magical being; इव (iva) - as if; निपपात (nipapāta) - fell down; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(With Indra's thunderbolt, as if by Indra launched by the swift wind, having slain the demon, having reached the earth, like a magical being as if, it indeed fell down.)
Just as Indra's thunderbolt, hurled by Indra and driven by the swift wind, after slaying the demon, fell to the earth as if it were a magical being, so did it indeed fall down. (03-157-68)
तं राक्षसं भीमबलं भीमसेनेन पातितम्। ददृशुः सर्वभूतानि सिंहेनेव गवां पतिम् ॥०३-१५७-६९॥
taṃ rākṣasaṃ bhīmabalaṃ bhīmasenena pātitam। dadṛśuḥ sarvabhūtāni siṃheneva gavāṃ patim ॥03-157-69॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; राक्षसं (rākṣasaṃ) - the rākṣasa (demon); भीमबलं (bhīmabalam) - of terrible strength; भीमसेनेन (bhīmasenena) - by Bhīmasena; पातितम् (pātitam) - struck down; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - saw; सर्वभूतानि (sarvabhūtāni) - all beings; सिंहेन (siṃhena) - by a lion; इव (iva) - as if; गवां (gavāṃ) - of cows; पतिम् (patim) - the lord;]
(Him, the rākṣasa of terrible strength, struck down by Bhīmasena, all beings saw, as if the lord of cows (was struck down) by a lion.)
All beings saw that rākṣasa of terrible strength, who was struck down by Bhīmasena, just as the lord of cows is (struck down) by a lion. (03-157-69)
तं प्रेक्ष्य निहतं भूमौ हतशेषा निशाचराः। भीममार्तस्वरं कृत्वा जग्मुः प्राचीं दिशं प्रति ॥०३-१५७-७०॥
taṁ prekṣya nihataṁ bhūmau hataśeṣā niśācarāḥ। bhīmam-ārtasvaraṁ kṛtvā jagmuḥ prācīṁ diśaṁ prati ॥03-157-70॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - having seen; निहतं (nihataṁ) - slain; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; हतशेषा (hataśeṣā) - (those) remaining after being killed; निशाचराः (niśācarāḥ) - night-wanderers; भीममार्तस्वरं (bhīmam-ārtasvaram) - terrible anguished cry; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - they went; प्राचीं (prācīm) - eastern; दिशं (diśam) - direction; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Him having seen slain on the ground, those remaining after being killed, the night-wanderers, having made a terrible anguished cry, went towards the eastern direction.)
When they saw him slain upon the ground, the surviving night-wanderers uttered a dreadful cry of anguish and fled towards the eastern direction. (03-157-70)
