युधिष्ठिरस्तमासाद्य तपसा दग्धकिल्बिषम्। अभ्यवादयत प्रीतः शिरसा नाम कीर्तयन् ॥०३-१५६-१॥
yudhiṣṭhiras tam āsādya tapasā dagdha-kilbiṣam। abhyavādayata prītaḥ śirasā nāma kīrtayan ॥03-156-1॥

ततः कृष्णा च भीमश्च यमौ चापि यशस्विनौ। शिरोभिः प्राप्य राजर्षिं परिवार्योपतस्थिरे ॥०३-१५६-२॥
tataḥ kṛṣṇā ca bhīmaś ca yamau cāpi yaśasvinau. śirobhiḥ prāpya rājarṣiṃ parivāryopatasthire ॥03-156-2॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī, ‘the dark one’ name of Draupadī) ; च (ca) - and; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhīma; (proper noun) च (ca) - and; यमौ (yamau) - the two Yamas (here: Nakula and Sahadeva, twins, called after Yama, the god of death); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; यशस्विनौ (yaśasvinau) - illustrious (dual); शिरोभिः (śirobhiḥ) - with (their) heads; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; राजर्षिं (rājarṣiṃ) - the royal ṛṣi (king-sage) ; परिवार्य (parivārya) - having surrounded; उपतस्थिरे (upatast hire) - stood near (served, attended upon);]
(Then Kṛṣṇā and Bhīma and also the illustrious two sons of Yama, having reached the royal ṛṣi with (their) heads, having surrounded (him), stood near (him).)
Then Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), Bhīma, and the illustrious twins (Nakula and Sahadeva), approached and, bowing their heads, surrounded the royal sage and stood near him. (03-156-2)
तथैव धौम्यो धर्मज्ञः पाण्डवानां पुरोहितः। यथान्यायमुपाक्रान्तस्तमृषिं संशितव्रतम् ॥०३-१५६-३॥
tathaiva dhaumyo dharmajñaḥ pāṇḍavānāṃ purohitaḥ। yathā-nyāyam-upākrāntas-tam ṛṣiṃ saṃśitavratam॥03-156-3॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same manner; similarly; धौम्यः (dhaumyaḥ) - Dhaumya (proper noun, a sage and priest); धर्मज्ञः (dharmajñaḥ) - knower of dharma; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; पुरोहितः (purohitaḥ) - family priest; यथा (yathā) - according; अन्यायम् (anyāyam) - to procedure, rule; उपाक्रान्तः (upākrāntaḥ) - approached; तम् (tam) - that; ऋषिम् (ṛṣim) - sage; संशितव्रतम् (saṃśitavratam) - firm in vows;]
(Similarly Dhaumya, knower of dharma, priest of the Pāṇḍavas, approached that sage, firm in vows, according to proper procedure.)
Likewise, Dhaumya, who knew dharma and was the priest of the Pāṇḍavas, approached that sage of firm vows according to the proper rule. (03-156-3)
अन्वजानात्स धर्मज्ञो मुनिर्दिव्येन चक्षुषा। पाण्डोः पुत्रान्कुरुश्रेष्ठानास्यतामिति चाब्रवीत् ॥०३-१५६-४॥
anvajānāts dharmajño munir divyena cakṣuṣā। pāṇḍoḥ putrān kuruśreṣṭhān āsya tām iti ca abravīt ॥03-156-4॥
[अन्वजानात् (anvajānāt) - having perceived; continued to know; धर्मज्ञः (dharmajñaḥ) - one who knows dharma; knower of righteousness; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; दिव्येन (divyena) - by divine; चक्षुषा (cakṣuṣā) - with eye; by vision; पाण्डोः (pāṇḍoḥ) - of Pāṇḍu; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; कुरुश्रेष्ठान् (kuruśreṣṭhān) - best of the Kuru (dynasty); आस्यताम् (āsya tām) - (may they) be seated; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Having perceived, the dharma-knowing sage with divine vision, of Pāṇḍu the sons, best of Kurus, "may they be seated"—thus also he said.)
The sage, knower of dharma, perceiving with divine vision, said concerning the sons of Pāṇḍu, the foremost of the Kurus, "let them be seated." (03-156-4)
कुरूणामृषभं प्राज्ञं पूजयित्वा महातपाः। सह भ्रातृभिरासीनं पर्यपृच्छदनामयम् ॥०३-१५६-५॥
kurūṇām ṛṣabhaṃ prājñaṃ pūjayitvā mahātapāḥ। saha bhrātṛbhiḥ āsīnam paryapṛcchad anāmayam॥03-156-5॥
[कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; ऋषभं (ṛṣabham) - the bull; प्राज्ञं (prājñam) - wise; पूजयित्वा (pūjayitvā) - having worshipped; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - the great ascetic; सह (saha) - together (with); भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; आसीनं (āsīnam) - seated; पर्यपृच्छत् (paryapṛcchat) - inquired; अनामयम् (anāmayam) - well-being;]
(Having worshipped the wise bull of the Kurus, the great ascetic, together with his brothers, inquired (while he was) seated, about his well-being.)
The great ascetic, after honoring the wise leader of the Kurus, together with his brothers, questioned him, who was seated, about his welfare. (03-156-5)
नानृते कुरुषे भावं कच्चिद्धर्मे च वर्तसे। मतापित्रोश्च ते वृत्तिः कच्चित्पार्थ न सीदति ॥०३-१५६-६॥
nā-nṛte kuruṣe bhāvaṁ kaccid dharme ca vartase। matāpitroś ca te vṛttiḥ kaccit pārtha na sīdate ॥03-156-6॥
[नानृते (nā-nṛte) - not in untruth; कुरुषे (kuruṣe) - you do (perform); भावं (bhāvaṁ) - conduct; feeling; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; surely; धर्मे (dharme) - in righteousness; च (ca) - and; वर्तसे (vartase) - you abide; मतापित्रोः (matāpitroḥ) - of mother and father; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; वृत्तिः (vṛttiḥ) - conduct; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; surely; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; न (na) - not; सीदति (sīdate) - declines; loses;]
(Whether you do conduct not in untruth; and whether you abide in righteousness; and whether your conduct toward mother and father, O Pārtha, does not decline.)
O Pārtha, do you act only truthfully and live righteously? Does your conduct toward your father and mother remain steadfast, never faltering? (03-156-6)
कच्चित्ते गुरवः सर्वे वृद्धा वैद्याश्च पूजिताः। कच्चिन्न कुरुषे भावं पार्थ पापेषु कर्मसु ॥०३-१५६-७॥
kaccitte guravaḥ sarve vṛddhā vaidyāśca pūjitāḥ। kaccinna kuruṣe bhāvaṃ pārtha pāpeṣu karmasu ॥03-156-7॥
[कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether indeed; ते (te) - your; गुरवः (guravaḥ) - elders; सर्वे (sarve) - all; वृद्धाः (vṛddhāḥ) - aged; elders; वैद्याः (vaidyāḥ) - physicians; च (ca) - and; पूजिताः (pūjitāḥ) - honored; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether indeed; न (na) - not; कुरुषे (kuruṣe) - do you make; भावं (bhāvaṃ) - feeling; intention; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; O Pārtha; पापेषु (pāpeṣu) - in sins; in evil; कर्मसु (karmasu) - in acts; in actions;]
(Whether indeed your elders, all the aged and physicians, are honored. Whether indeed you do not form intent, O Pārtha, in sinful actions.)
Are all your elders, the aged and physicians, duly honored by you? And, O Pārtha, do you refrain from entertaining an intention towards sinful actions? (03-156-7)
सुकृतं प्रतिकर्तुं च कच्चिद्धातुं च दुष्कृतम्। यथान्यायं कुरुश्रेष्ठ जानासि न च कत्थसे ॥०३-१५६-८॥
sukṛtaṃ pratikartuṃ ca kacciddhātuṃ ca duṣkṛtam। yathānyāyaṃ kuruśreṣṭha jānāsi na ca katthase॥03-156-8॥
[सुकृतम् (sukṛtam) - good deed; प्रतिकर्तुं (pratikartuṃ) - to return; to reciprocate; च (ca) - and; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; धातुं (dhātuṃ) - to restrain; च (ca) - and; दुष्कृतम् (duṣkṛtam) - bad deed; यथा (yathā) - as; according as; अन्यायम् (anyāyam) - justice; rightly; कुरुश्रेष्ठ (kuruśreṣṭha) - O best of the Kurus; जानासि (jānāsi) - you know; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; कत्थसे (katthase) - you boast;]
(Whether (you are able) to return good deed and to restrain bad deed, as is just, O best of the Kurus, you know and do not boast.)
O best of the Kurus, do you know how to properly repay a good deed and curb a bad deed according to justice, and do not boast. (3-156-8)
यथार्हं मानिताः कच्चित्त्वया नन्दन्ति साधवः। वनेष्वपि वसन्कच्चिद्धर्ममेवानुवर्तसे ॥०३-१५६-९॥
yathārhaṃ mānitāḥ kaccittvayā nandanti sādhavaḥ। vaneṣvapi vasan kacciddharmam evānuvartase॥03-156-9॥
[यथार्हम् (yathārham) - as is fitting; as is proper; मानिताः (mānitāḥ) - honored; respected; कच्चित् (kaccit) - surely; perhaps; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; नन्दन्ति (nandanti) - rejoice; are pleased; साधवः (sādhavaḥ) - the virtuous; good people; वनेषु (vaneṣu) - in the forests; अपि (api) - even; also; वसन् (vasan) - living; कच्चित् (kaccit) - surely; perhaps; धर्मम् (dharmaṃ) - dharma; righteousness; एव (eva) - only; indeed; अनुवर्तसे (anuvartase) - you follow;]
(As is fitting honored surely by you rejoice the virtuous. In forests even living surely dharma only you follow.)
Are the virtuous people honored by you as is proper surely pleased? While living even in the forests, do you indeed continue to follow only dharma? (03-156-9)
कच्चिद्धौम्यस्त्वदाचारैर्न पार्थ परितप्यते। दानधर्मतपःशौचैरार्जवेन तितिक्षया ॥०३-१५६-१०॥
kacciddhaumyastvadācārairna pārtha paritapyate. dānadharmatapaḥśaucairārjavena titikṣayā ॥03-156-10॥
[कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; is it the case; धौम्यः (dhaumyaḥ) - Dhaumya; (proper noun, a person); त्वत्-आचारैः (tvat-ācāraiḥ) - by your conduct; by your behaviors; न (na) - not; पार्थ (pārtha) - Pārtha; (O son of Pritha, Arjuna); परितप्यते (paritapyate) - is grieved; suffers; दान (dāna) - by giving; by charity; धर्म (dharma) - by righteousness; तपः (tapaḥ) - by austerity; by penance; शौचैः (śaucaiḥ) - by purity; आर्जवेन (ārjavena) - by sincerity; by straightforwardness; तितिक्षया (titikṣayā) - by forbearance;]
(Whether Dhaumya is not, O Pārtha, grieved by your conduct; by charity, righteousness, austerity, purity, sincerity, by forbearance.)
O Pārtha, is Dhaumya not, by your conduct, grieved?—as you possess charity, righteousness, austerity, purity, sincerity, and forbearance. (03-156-10)
पितृपैतामहं वृत्तं कच्चित्पार्थानुवर्तसे। कच्चिद्राजर्षियातेन पथा गच्छसि पाण्डव ॥०३-१५६-११॥
pitṛpaitāmahaṁ vṛttaṁ kaccit pārthānuvar­tase। kaccid rājarṣiyātena pathā gacchasi pāṇḍava ॥03-156-11॥
[पितृपैतामहं (pitṛpaitāmaham) - of father and grandfather; वृत्तं (vṛttam) - conduct; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā (Arjuna); अनुवर्तसे (anuvartase) - are you following; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; राजर्षियातेन (rājarṣiyātena) - by that of royal sages; पथा (pathā) - by the path; गच्छसि (gacchasi) - are you going; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O son of Pāṇḍu;]
(The conduct of father and grandfather, whether, O Pārtha, are you following? Whether by that path of the royal sages, are you going, O Pāṇḍava?)
Are you following the conduct of your father and grandfather, O Pārtha? Are you proceeding along the path of the royal sages, O Pāṇḍava? (03-156-11)
स्वे स्वे किल कुले जाते पुत्रे नप्तरि वा पुनः। पितरः पितृलोकस्थाः शोचन्ति च हसन्ति च ॥०३-१५६-१२॥
sve sve kila kule jāte putre naptari vā punaḥ। pitaraḥ pitṛlokasthāḥ śocanti ca hasanti ca ॥03-156-12॥
[स्वे स्वे (sve sve) - in their own respective; in their own respective; किल (kila) - indeed; कुले (kule) - family; जाते (jāte) - born; पुत्रे (putre) - son; नप्तरि (naptari) - grandson; वा (vā) - or; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पितरः (pitaraḥ) - ancestors; पितृलोकस्थाः (pitṛlokasthāḥ) - residing in the realm of the ancestors; शोचन्ति (śocanti) - grieve; च (ca) - and; हसन्ति (hasanti) - rejoice; च (ca) - and;]
(In their own respective family, when a son or grandson is born again, the ancestors residing in the world of ancestors, indeed, grieve and rejoice and.)
When in their own family a son or grandson is born again, the ancestors dwelling in the realm of the ancestors indeed either grieve or rejoice. (03-156-12)
किं न्वस्य दुष्कृतेऽस्माभिः सम्प्राप्तव्यं भविष्यति। किं चास्य सुकृतेऽस्माभिः प्राप्तव्यमिति शोभनम् ॥०३-१५६-१३॥
kiṁ nvasya duṣkṛte'smābhiḥ samprāptavyaṁ bhaviṣyati। kiṁ cāsya sukṛte'smābhiḥ prāptavyam iti śobhanam ॥03-156-13॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; अस्य (asya) - of him; दुष्कृते (duṣkṛte) - from bad deed; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; सम्प्राप्तव्यम् (samprāptavyam) - to be obtained; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; किं (kiṁ) - what; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - of him; सुकृते (sukṛte) - from good deed; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; प्राप्तव्यम् (prāptavyam) - to be obtained; इति (iti) - thus; शोभनम् (śobhanam) - excellent;]
(What indeed from his bad deed by us is to be obtained will be? What and from his good deed by us is to be obtained thus excellent (it is)? (03-156-13))
What, indeed, will be obtained by us from his bad deed? And what is to be obtained by us from his good deed? Thinking thus is excellent. (03-156-13)
पिता माता तथैवाग्निर्गुरुरात्मा च पञ्चमः। यस्यैते पूजिताः पार्थ तस्य लोकावुभौ जितौ ॥०३-१५६-१४॥
pitā mātā tathaiva-agnir guruḥ ātmā ca pañcamaḥ। yasya ete pūjitāḥ pārtha tasya lokau ubhau jitau॥03-156-14॥
[पिता (pitā) - father; माता (mātā) - mother; तथैव (tathaiva) - just so; likewise; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; गुरुः (guruḥ) - teacher; आत्मा (ātmā) - self; च (ca) - and; पञ्चमः (pañcamaḥ) - the fifth; यस्य (yasya) - whose; एते (ete) - these; पूजिताः (pūjitāḥ) - honored; worshipped; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; लोकौ (lokau) - the worlds (both); उभौ (ubhau) - both; जितौ (jitau) - are conquered;]
(Father, mother, likewise fire, teacher, self and the fifth; whose these are honored, O Pārtha, of him the worlds both are conquered.)
O Pārtha, he whose father, mother, fire, teacher, and self—that is, these five—are honored, for him both worlds are conquered. (03-156-14)
अब्भक्षा वायुभक्षाश्च प्लवमाना विहायसा। जुषन्ते पर्वतश्रेष्ठमृषयः पर्वसन्धिषु ॥०३-१५६-१५॥
abbhakṣā vāyubhakṣāś ca plavamānā vihāyasā। juṣante parvataśreṣṭham ṛṣayaḥ parvasaṃdhiṣu ॥03-156-15॥
[अब्भक्षा (abbhakṣāḥ) - those who feed on water only; वायुभक्षाः (vāyubhakṣāḥ) - those who feed on air only; च (ca) - and; प्लवमाना (plavamānāḥ) - moving (about); jumping; leaping; विहायसा (vihāyasā) - by/through sky; जुषन्ते (juṣante) - enjoy; are delighted in; inhabit; पर्वतश्रेष्ठम् (parvataśreṣṭham) - the best among the mountains; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; पर्वसन्धिषु (parvasaṃdhiṣu) - in the mountain-junctions; hills' joints;]
(Those who feed on water, those who feed on air, and those leaping through the sky—sages inhabit the best among the mountains at the joints of the mountains.)
Sages who subsist on water, on air, and those who move through the sky dwell on the best of mountains, at the joints of the hills. (03-156-15)
कामिनः सह कान्ताभिः परस्परमनुव्रताः। दृश्यन्ते शैलशृङ्गस्थास्तथा किम्पुरुषा नृप ॥०३-१५६-१६॥
kāminaḥ saha kāntābhiḥ parasparam-anuvratāḥ। dṛśyante śaila-śṛṅga-sthās tathā kimpuruṣā nṛpa ॥03-156-16॥
[कामिनः (kāminaḥ) - desirous ones; सह (saha) - with; कान्ताभिः (kāntābhiḥ) - lovers (female), beloveds; परस्परमनुव्रताः (parasparam-anuvratāḥ) - mutually devoted; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; शैलशृङ्गस्थाः (śaila-śṛṅga-sthāḥ) - situated on mountain peaks; तथा (tathā) - so; in like manner; किम्पुरुषाः (kimpuruṣāḥ) - Kimpuruṣas; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(Desirous ones with beloveds mutually devoted are seen, situated on mountain peaks; so Kimpuruṣas, O king.)
O king, the Kimpuruṣas, desirous and mutually devoted with their beloveds, are seen on the mountain peaks.
अरजांसि च वासांसि वसानाः कौशिकानि च। दृश्यन्ते बहवः पार्थ गन्धर्वाप्सरसां गणाः ॥०३-१५६-१७॥
arajāṃsi ca vāsāṃsi vasānāḥ kauśikāni ca। dṛśyante bahavaḥ pārtha gandharvāpsarasāṃ gaṇāḥ॥03-156-17॥
[अरजांसि (arajāṃsi) - dust-covered; च (ca) - and; वासांसि (vāsāṃsi) - garments; वसानाः (vasānāḥ) - wearing; कौशिकानि (kauśikāni) - made of silk; च (ca) - and; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; गन्धर्वाप्सरसां (gandharvāpsarasām) - of Gandharvas and Apsarases; गणाः (gaṇāḥ) - groups;]
(Dust-covered and garments-wearing, and those made of silk, are seen, many, O son of Pṛthā, groups of Gandharvas and Apsarases.)
O Pārtha, many groups of Gandharvas and Apsarases, wearing dust-covered and silk garments, are seen here. (03-156-17)
विद्याधरगणाश्चैव स्रग्विणः प्रियदर्शनाः। महोरगगणाश्चैव सुपर्णाश्चोरगादयः ॥०३-१५६-१८॥
vidyādharagaṇāścaiva sragviṇaḥ priyadarśanāḥ। mahoragagaṇāścaiva suparṇāścoragādayaḥ ॥03-156-18॥
[विद्याधरगणाः (vidyādharagaṇāḥ) - groups of Vidyādharas; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; स्रग्विणः (sragviṇaḥ) - adorned with garlands; प्रियदर्शनाः (priyadarśanāḥ) - pleasing in appearance; महत् (mahat) - great; उरगगणाः (uragagaṇāḥ) - groups of serpents; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सुपर्णाः (suparṇāḥ) - Suparṇas (divine birds, Garuḍas); च (ca) - and; उरगादयः (uragādayaḥ) - serpents and others;]
(Groups of Vidyādharas and indeed, those adorned with garlands, pleasing in appearance; and groups of great serpents, and indeed Suparṇas and serpents and others.)
There were groups of Vidyādharas, splendidly garlanded and pleasing to behold, and also great serpent beings, Suparṇas, and various kinds of serpents and others. (03-156-18)
अस्य चोपरि शैलस्य श्रूयते पर्वसन्धिषु। भेरीपणवशङ्खानां मृदङ्गानां च निस्वनः ॥०३-१५६-१९॥
asya copari śailasya śrūyate parvasandhiṣu। bherīpaṇavaśaṅkhānāṃ mṛdaṅgānāṃ ca nisvanaḥ॥03-156-19॥
[अस्य (asya) - of this; च (ca) - and; उपरि (upari) - upon; above; शैलस्य (śailasya) - of the mountain; श्रूयते (śrūyate) - is heard; पर्वसन्धिषु (parvasandhiṣu) - at the joints of the mountain; in the mountain passes; भेरीपणवशङ्खानां (bherīpaṇavaśaṅkhānāṃ) - of the drums, small kettledrums, and conches; मृदङ्गानां (mṛdaṅgānāṃ) - of mṛdaṅgas (barrel-drums); च (ca) - and; निस्वनः (nisvanaḥ) - sound;]
(And upon this mountain, in the joints of the mountain, is heard the sound of drums, small kettledrums and conches, and mṛdaṅgas.)
Upon this mountain, the sound of drums, kettledrums, conches, and mṛdaṅgas is heard echoing in the mountain passes. (03-156-19)
इहस्थैरेव तत्सर्वं श्रोतव्यं भरतर्षभाः। न कार्या वः कथञ्चित्स्यात्तत्राभिसरणे मतिः ॥०३-१५६-२०॥
ihasthair eva tat sarvaṁ śrotavyaṁ bharatarṣabhāḥ। na kāryā vaḥ kathaṁcit syāt tatrābhisaraṇe matiḥ॥03-156-20॥
[इहस्थैः (ihasthaiḥ) - by those who are stationed here; एव (eva) - indeed; तत् (tat) - that; सर्वं (sarvaṁ) - all; श्रोतव्यम् (śrotavyam) - to be heard; भरतर्षभाः (bharatarṣabhāḥ) - O best of the Bharatas; न (na) - not; कार्या (kāryā) - should be made; वः (vaḥ) - by you; कथंचित् (kathaṁcit) - in any way; स्यात् (syāt) - should be; तत्र (tatra) - there; अभिसरणे (abhisaraṇe) - in advancing (going forth); मतिः (matiḥ) - thought;]
(By those who are stationed here indeed, that all is to be heard, O best of the Bharatas; not should be made by you in any way thought in advancing there.)
O best of the Bharatas, all that should be heard by those who are stationed here itself; in no way should you form the intention of advancing there. (03-156-20)
न चाप्यतः परं शक्यं गन्तुं भरतसत्तमाः। विहारो ह्यत्र देवानाममानुषगतिस्तु सा ॥०३-१५६-२१॥
na cāpyataḥ paraṃ śakyaṃ gantuṃ bharatasattamāḥ। vihāro hyatra devānām amānuṣagatistu sā ॥03-156-21॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अतः (ataḥ) - from here; परं (paraṃ) - beyond; शक्यं (śakyaṃ) - possible; गन्तुं (gantuṃ) - to go; भरतसत्तमाः (bharatasattamāḥ) - O best of the Bharatas; विहारः (vihāraḥ) - roaming; हि (hi) - indeed; अत्र (atra) - here; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; अमानुषगतिः (amānuṣagatiḥ) - non-human course; तु (tu) - but; सा (sā) - that;]
(Not also from here beyond is it possible to go, O best of the Bharatas; roaming here indeed is of the gods, but that is a non-human course.)
O best of the Bharatas, it is not possible to go beyond this point; for indeed, roaming here belongs to the gods—such a way is not for humans. (03-156-21)
ईषच्चपलकर्माणं मनुष्यमिह भारत। द्विषन्ति सर्वभूतानि ताडयन्ति च राक्षसाः ॥०३-१५६-२२॥
īṣaccapalakarmāṇam manuṣyam iha bhārata। dviṣanti sarvabhūtāni tāḍayanti ca rākṣasāḥ॥03-156-22॥
[ईषच्चपलकर्माणं (īṣaccapalakarmāṇam) - of slightly fickle deeds; मनुष्यम् (manuṣyam) - man; इह (iha) - here; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; द्विषन्ति (dviṣanti) - hate; सर्वभूतानि (sarvabhūtāni) - all beings; ताडयन्ति (tāḍayanti) - strike; च (ca) - and; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - rākṣasas (demons);]
(Of slightly fickle deeds man here, O Bhārata, all beings hate and rākṣasas strike.)
O Bhārata, here, all beings hate a man of slightly fickle conduct, and the rākṣasas strike him. (03-156-22)
अभ्यतिक्रम्य शिखरं शैलस्यास्य युधिष्ठिर। गतिः परमसिद्धानां देवर्षीणां प्रकाशते ॥०३-१५६-२३॥
abhyatikramya śikharaṃ śailasyāsya yudhiṣṭhira। gatiḥ paramasiddhānāṃ devarṣīṇāṃ prakāśate ॥03-156-23॥
[अभ्यतिक्रम्य (abhyatikramya) - having crossed over; शिखरं (śikharaṃ) - the summit; शैलस्य (śailasya) - of the mountain; अस्य (asya) - of this; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - O Yudhiṣṭhira; गतिः (gatiḥ) - the path; परमसिद्धानां (paramasiddhānāṃ) - of the supremely perfected ones; देवर्षीणां (devarṣīṇāṃ) - of the divine ṛṣis; प्रकाशते (prakāśate) - manifests itself;]
(Having crossed over the summit of this mountain, O Yudhiṣṭhira, the path of the supremely perfected ones, of the divine ṛṣis, manifests itself.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, after crossing the summit of this mountain, the path of the most perfected beings, the divine ṛṣis, becomes visible. (03-156-23)
चापलादिह गच्छन्तं पार्थ यानमतः परम्। अयःशूलादिभिर्घ्नन्ति राक्षसाः शत्रुसूदन ॥०३-१५६-२४॥
cāpalādiha gacchantaṃ pārtha yānamataḥ param। ayaḥśūlādibhirghnanti rākṣasāḥ śatrusūdana ॥03-156-24॥
[चापलादिह (cāpala-ādiha) - from (this place) onwards to Chapala and beyond; गच्छन्तं (gacchantam) - going; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; यानम् (yānam) - chariot; अतः (ataḥ) - from here; परम् (param) - beyond; अयःशूलादिभिः (ayaḥśūla-ādibhiḥ) - with iron spears and the like; घ्नन्ति (ghnanti) - they strike/slay; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - Rākṣasas; शत्रुसूदन (śatru-sūdana) - O slayer of enemies;]
(O son of Pṛthā, the Rākṣasas strike with iron spears and the like, the chariot going from here beyond Chapala, O slayer of enemies.)
O Pārtha, the Rākṣasas strike with iron spears and such at the chariot that goes from here beyond Chapala, O slayer of enemies. (03-156-24)
अप्सरोभिः परिवृतः समृद्ध्या नरवाहनः। इह वैश्रवणस्तात पर्वसन्धिषु दृश्यते ॥०३-१५६-२५॥
apsarobhiḥ parivṛtaḥ samṛddhyā naravāhanaḥ | iha vaiśravaṇas tāta parvasandhiṣu dṛśyate ॥03-156-25॥
[अप्सरोभिः (apsarobhiḥ) - with apsarases; (by the apsarases; instrumental plural of apsaras); परिवृतः (parivṛtaḥ) - surrounded; (having been encircled); समृद्ध्या (samṛddhyā) - with prosperity; (by prosperity; instrumental singular of samṛddhi); नरवाहनः (naravāhanaḥ) - Nara-vāhana; (a proper noun, epithet of Kubera); इह (iha) - here; वैश्रवणः (vaiśravaṇaḥ) - Vaiśravaṇa; (a proper noun, another name of Kubera); तात (tāta) - dear one; (addressing, O dear); पर्वसन्धिषु (parvasandhiṣu) - at mountain-junctions; (in the joints or places where mountains meet; locative plural); दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - is seen; (is observed; passive 3rd person singular of dṛś, to see);]
(Surrounded by apsarases, with prosperity, Nara-vāhana (Kubera) here, O dear one, Vaiśravaṇa, at the mountain-junctions, is seen.)
Here, dear one, Kubera, known as Vaiśravaṇa and Nara-vāhana, surrounded by apsarases and abundance, is seen at the meeting places of the mountains. (03-156-25)
शिखरे तं समासीनमधिपं सर्वरक्षसाम्। प्रेक्षन्ते सर्वभूतानि भानुमन्तमिवोदितम् ॥०३-१५६-२६॥
śikhare taṃ samāsīnam-adhipaṃ sarva-rakṣasām। prekṣante sarva-bhūtāni bhānumantam-iva uditam ॥03-156-26॥
[शिखरे (śikhare) - on the peak; तं (taṃ) - that; समासीनम् (samāsīnam) - seated; अधिपम् (adhipam) - lord; सर्वरक्षसाम् (sarva-rakṣasām) - of all the rākṣasas; प्रेक्षन्ते (prekṣante) - look; सर्वभूतानि (sarva-bhūtāni) - all beings; भानुमन्तम् (bhānumantam) - radiant one; इव (iva) - like; उदितम् (uditam) - risen;]
(On the peak, that lord of all the rākṣasas seated, all beings look (at him) like a radiant one risen.)
All beings gaze at that lord of all the rākṣasas, seated on the peak, as if he were the radiant sun just risen. (03-156-26)
देवदानवसिद्धानां तथा वैश्रवणस्य च। गिरेः शिखरमुद्यानमिदं भरतसत्तम ॥०३-१५६-२७॥
devadānavasiddhānāṃ tathā vaiśravaṇasya ca। gireḥ śikharamudyānamidaṃ bharatasattama ॥03-156-27॥
[देवदानवसिद्धानां (devadānavasiddhānāṃ) - of the gods, demons, and siddhas; तथा (tathā) - and also; वैश्रवणस्य (vaiśravaṇasya) - of Vaiśravaṇa; च (ca) - and; गिरेः (gireḥ) - of the mountain; शिखरम् (śikharam) - summit; उद्यानम् (udyānam) - garden; इदम् (idaṃ) - this; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(Of the gods, demons, and siddhas, and also of Vaiśravaṇa, and of the mountain, the summit garden this, O best of the Bharatas.)
O best of the Bharatas, this summit garden of the mountain is for the gods, demons, siddhas, and also for Vaiśravaṇa. (03-156-27)
उपासीनस्य धनदं तुम्बुरोः पर्वसन्धिषु। गीतसामस्वनस्तात श्रूयते गन्धमादने ॥०३-१५६-२८॥
upāsīnasya dhanadaṃ tumburoḥ parvasandhiṣu। gītasāmasvanastāta śrūyate gandhamādane ॥03-156-28॥
[उपासीनस्य (upāsīnasya) - of (him) seated; धनदं (dhanadam) - Dhanada (Kubera, the Giver of Wealth); तुम्बुरोः (tumburoḥ) - of Tumburu; पर्वसन्धिषु (parvasandhiṣu) - at the mountain junctions; गीतसामस्वनस्तात (gītasāmasvanastāta) - the sound of (his) singing and chanting, O dear; श्रूयते (śrūyate) - is heard; गन्धमादने (gandhamādane) - in Gandhamadana (mountain);]
(Of the seated Dhanada, of Tumburu, at the mountain junctions, the sound of song and Sāma, O dear, is heard in Gandhamadana.)
O dear, on Gandhamadana mountain, the sound of Tumburu singing and chanting for the seated Dhanada (Kubera) is heard at the junctions of the hills. (03-156-28)
एतदेवंविधं चित्रमिह तात युधिष्ठिर। प्रेक्षन्ते सर्वभूतानि बहुशः पर्वसन्धिषु ॥०३-१५६-२९॥
etadevaṃ-vidhaṃ citram iha tāta yudhiṣṭhira। prekṣante sarva-bhūtāni bahuśaḥ parva-sandhiṣu ॥03-156-29॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; एवंविधम् (evaṃ-vidham) - of such kind; चित्रम् (citram) - wondrous thing; इह (iha) - here; तात (tāta) - dear one (O son); युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - Yudhiṣṭhira; प्रेक्षन्ते (prekṣante) - observe; सर्वभूतानि (sarva-bhūtāni) - all beings; बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - many times; पर्वसन्धिषु (parva-sandhiṣu) - at the junctures of the parvans;]
(This of such kind wondrous thing here, O son Yudhiṣṭhira, all beings observe many times at the junctures of the parvans.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, dear one, all beings repeatedly observe such wondrous things as this here at the junctures of the parvans. (03-156-29)
भुञ्जानाः सर्वभोज्यानि रसवन्ति फलानि च। वसध्वं पाण्डवश्रेष्ठा यावदर्जुनदर्शनम् ॥०३-१५६-३०॥
bhuñjānāḥ sarvabhojyāni rasavanti phalāni ca। vasadhvaṃ pāṇḍavaśreṣṭhā yāvadarjunadarśanam ॥03-156-30॥
[भुञ्जानाः (bhuñjānāḥ) - enjoying; partaking; सर्वभोज्यानि (sarvabhojyāni) - all edible things; रसवन्ति (rasavanti) - juicy; full of sap; फलानि (phalāni) - fruits; च (ca) - and; वसध्वं (vasadhvaṃ) - dwell; stay; पाण्डवश्रेष्ठाः (pāṇḍavaśreṣṭhāḥ) - O best of the Pāṇḍavas; यावत् (yāvat) - until; अर्जुनदर्शनम् (arjunadarśanam) - sight/meeting of Arjuna;]
(Enjoying all edible things, juicy fruits and, dwell, O best of the Pāṇḍavas, until the sight of Arjuna.)
Enjoy all kinds of food and juicy fruits, and remain here, O best of the Pāṇḍavas, until Arjuna is seen. (03-156-30)
न तात चपलैर्भाव्यमिह प्राप्तैः कथञ्चन। उषित्वेह यथाकामं यथाश्रद्धं विहृत्य च ॥ ततः शस्त्रभृतां श्रेष्ठ पृथिवीं पालयिष्यसि ॥०३-१५६-३१॥
na tāta capalair bhāvyam iha prāptaiḥ kathañcana। uṣitvā iha yathā-kāmam yathā-śraddham vihṛtya ca ॥ tataḥ śastra-bhṛtāṃ śreṣṭha pṛthivīm pālayiṣyasi ॥03-156-31॥
[न (na) - not; तात (tāta) - O dear one; चपलैः (capalaiḥ) - by the restless; भाव्यम् (bhāvyam) - should be acted (remained); इह (iha) - here; प्राप्तैः (prāptaiḥ) - by the arrived (by those who have arrived); कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way; उषित्वा (uṣitvā) - having dwelt; इह (iha) - here; यथाकामम् (yathā-kāmam) - as one wishes; यथाश्रद्धम् (yathā-śraddham) - as one has faith; विहृत्य (vihṛtya) - having spent (time); च (ca) - and; ततः (tataḥ) - then; शस्त्रभृताम् (śastra-bhṛtām) - of the bearers of weapons; श्रेष्ठ (śreṣṭha) - O best; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - the earth; पालयिष्यसि (pālayiṣyasi) - you will protect;]
(Not, O dear one, by the restless should one remain here in any way, by those who have arrived; having dwelt here as one wishes, as one has faith, and having spent (time); then, O best of the bearers of weapons, you will protect the earth.)
O dear one, one should not remain here in any way with those who are restless and have arrived; having stayed here as long as you wish and as your faith allows, and having spent your time, then, O best of warriors, you will protect the earth. (03-156-31)
