श्रुत्वा बहुविधैः शब्दैर्नाद्यमाना गिरेर्गुहाः। अजातशत्रुः कौन्तेयो माद्रीपुत्रावुभावपि ॥०३-१५८-१॥
śrutvā bahuvidhaiḥ śabdair nādyamānā gher guhāḥ। ajātaśatruḥ kaunteyo mādrīputrāv ubhāv api ॥03-158-1॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; बहुविधैः (bahuvidhaiḥ) - by many kinds; शब्दैः (śabdaiḥ) - with sounds; नाद्यमाना (nādyamānā) - being echoed; गिरेः (gireḥ) - of the mountain; गुहाः (guhāḥ) - the caves; अजातशत्रुः (ajātaśatruḥ) - Ajātaśatru (epithet of Yudhiṣṭhira); कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - Kaunteya (son of Kuntī; another epithet of Yudhiṣṭhira); माद्रीपुत्रौ (mādrīputrau) - the sons of Mādrī (i.e., Nakula and Sahadeva); उभौ (ubhau) - both; अपि (api) - also;]
(Having heard the caves of the mountain being echoed with many kinds of sounds, Ajātaśatru, Kaunteya (Yudhiṣṭhira) and also both sons of Mādrī.)
Ajātaśatru, the son of Kuntī (Yudhiṣṭhira), and both sons of Mādrī (Nakula and Sahadeva) also, after hearing the caves of the mountain resounding with many kinds of sounds, (responded thus). (03-158-1)
धौम्यः कृष्णा च विप्राश्च सर्वे च सुहृदस्तथा। भीमसेनमपश्यन्तः सर्वे विमनसोऽभवन् ॥०३-१५८-२॥
dhaumyaḥ kṛṣṇā ca viprāś ca sarve ca suhṛdas tathā। bhīmasenam apaśyantaḥ sarve vimanasaḥ abhavan ॥03-158-2॥

(Dhaumya, Kṛṣṇā and brāhmaṇas and all and friends likewise, all not seeing Bhīmasena, all became dispirited.)
Dhaumya, Kṛṣṇā, all the brāhmaṇas, and likewise all the friends, on not seeing Bhīmasena, all became dispirited. (03-158-2)
द्रौपदीमार्ष्टिषेणाय प्रदाय तु महारथाः। सहिताः सायुधाः शूराः शैलमारुरुहुस्तदा ॥०३-१५८-३॥
draupadīm ārṣṭiṣeṇāya pradāya tu mahārathāḥ। sahitāḥ sāyudhāḥ śūrāḥ śailam āruruhuḥ tadā॥03-158-3॥

(Draupadī to Ārṣṭiṣeṇa having given but the great warriors, together, armed, heroes, the mountain ascended then.)
But having given Draupadī to Ārṣṭiṣeṇa, the great warriors, together, armed and brave, then ascended the mountain. (03-158-3)
ततः सम्प्राप्य शैलाग्रं वीक्षमाणा महारथाः। ददृशुस्ते महेष्वासा भीमसेनमरिंदमम् ॥०३-१५८-४॥
tataḥ samprāpya śailāgram vīkṣamāṇā mahārathāḥ। dadṛśus te maheṣvāsā bhīmasenam ariṃ-damam ॥03-158-4॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सम्प्राप्य (samprāpya) - having reached; शैलाग्रं (śailāgram) - mountain peak; वीक्षमाणा (vīkṣamāṇā) - observing; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great chariot-warriors; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - they saw; ते (te) - they; महेष्वासाः (maheṣvāsāḥ) - mighty bowmen; भीमसेनम् (bhīmasenam) - Bhimasena; अरिंदमम् (ariṃ-damam) - subduer of enemies;]
(Then, having reached the mountain peak, observing, the great chariot-warriors, those mighty bowmen, saw Bhimasena, the subduer of enemies.)
Then the great chariot-warriors, mighty bowmen, reached the mountain peak and, observing, saw Bhimasena, the subduer of enemies. (03-158-4)
स्फुरतश्च महाकायान्गतसत्त्वांश्च राक्षसान्। महाबलान्महाघोरान्भीमसेनेन पातितान् ॥०३-१५८-५॥
sphurataś ca mahākāyān-gatasattvānś ca rākṣasān। mahābalān mahāghorān bhīmasenena pātitān ॥03-158-5॥
[स्फुरतश् (sphurataḥ) - quivering; moving; च (ca) - and; महाकायान् (mahākāyān) - great-bodied; गतसत्त्वान् (gatasattvān) - whose life is gone; lifeless; च (ca) - and; राक्षसान् (rākṣasān) - rākṣasas; demons; महाबलान् (mahābalān) - mighty; of great strength; महाघोरान् (mahāghorān) - very terrible; भीमसेनेन (bhīmasenena) - by Bhīmasena; पातितान् (pātitān) - felled; struck down;]
(And the quivering and great-bodied, lifeless rākṣasas, mighty, very terrible, struck down by Bhīmasena.)
The quivering, great-bodied, and departed-lifed rākṣasas, mighty and very terrible, were struck down by Bhīmasena. (03-158-5)
शुशुभे स महाबाहुर्गदाखड्गधनुर्धरः। निहत्य समरे सर्वान्दानवान्मघवानिव ॥०३-१५८-६॥
śuśubhe sa mahābāhuḥ gadā-khaḍga-dhanur-dharaḥ। nihatya samare sarvān dānavān maghavān iva ॥03-158-6॥
[शुशुभे (śuśubhe) - shone; was resplendent; स (sa) - he; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed; गदाखड्गधनुर्धरः (gadā-khaḍga-dhanur-dharaḥ) - bearing mace, sword, and bow; निहत्य (nihatya) - having slain; समरे (samare) - in battle; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; दानवान् (dānavān) - the Dānavas (demons); मघवान् (maghavān) - Maghavan (Indra); इव (iva) - like;]
(He, the mighty-armed, bearing mace, sword, and bow, having slain all the Dānavas in battle, shone like Maghavan (Indra).)
He, the mighty-armed one holding mace, sword, and bow, shone resplendent like Indra after having slain all the Dānavas in battle. (03-158-6)
ततस्ते समतिक्रम्य परिष्वज्य वृकोदरम्। तत्रोपविविशुः पार्थाः प्राप्ता गतिमनुत्तमाम् ॥०३-१५८-७॥
tataste samatikramya pariṣvajya vṛkodaram। tatropaviviśuḥ pārthāḥ prāptā gatimanuttamām ॥03-158-7॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; समतिक्रम्य (samatikramya) - having passed over; परिष्वज्य (pariṣvajya) - having embraced; वृकोदरम् (vṛkodaram) - Vṛkodara (Bhīma, 'wolf-bellied'); तत्र (tatra) - there; उपविविशुः (upaviviśuḥ) - sat down; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - the sons of Pṛthā (the Pāṇḍavas); प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - having obtained; गतिम् (gatim) - goal; अनुत्तमाम् (anuttamām) - unsurpassable;]
(Then they, having passed over, having embraced Vṛkodara, there sat down the Pāṇḍavas, having obtained the unsurpassable goal.)
Then they, having passed on and embraced Vṛkodara, there the Pāṇḍavas sat down, having attained the unsurpassable goal. (03-158-7)
तैश्चतुर्भिर्महेष्वासैर्गिरिशृङ्गमशोभत। लोकपालैर्महाभागैर्दिवं देववरैरिव ॥०३-१५८-८॥
taiś caturbhir maheṣvāsair giriśṛṅgam aśobhata। lokapālair mahābhāgair divaṃ devavarair iva ॥03-158-8॥
[तैः (taiḥ) - by those; by them; चतुर्भिः (caturbhiḥ) - by four; महेष्वासैः (maheṣvāsaiḥ) - by great archers; गिरिशृङ्गम् (giriśṛṅgam) - mountain peak; अशोभत (aśobhata) - shone; appeared splendid; लोकपालैः (lokapālaiḥ) - by guardians of the world; महाभागैः (mahābhāgaiḥ) - most fortunate; highly blessed; दिवम् (divam) - heaven; देववरैः (devavaraiḥ) - by excellent gods; इव (iva) - like; as if;]
(By those four great archers, the mountain peak shone; like heaven (shines) with the most fortunate guardians of the world, with excellent gods.)
The mountain peak shone beautifully with those four great archers, just as heaven shines with its most illustrious guardians, the foremost of gods. (03-158-8)
कुबेरसदनं दृष्ट्वा राक्षसांश्च निपातितान्। भ्राता भ्रातरमासीनमभ्यभाषत पाण्डवम् ॥०३-१५८-९॥
kuberasadanaṃ dṛṣṭvā rākṣasāṃś ca nipātitān । bhrātā bhrātaram āsīnam abhyabhāṣata pāṇḍavam ॥03-158-9॥
[कुबेरसदनं (kuberasadanaṃ) - Kubera's abode; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; राक्षसान् (rākṣasān) - rakṣasas (demons); च (ca) - and; निपातितान् (nipātitān) - those felled (brought down); भ्राता (bhrātā) - brother; भ्रातरम् (bhrātaram) - to (his) brother; आसीनम् (āsīnam) - sitting; अभ्यभाषत (abhyabhāṣata) - addressed (spoke to); पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - the Pāṇḍava;]
(Having seen Kubera's abode and the rakṣasas felled, the brother addressed the Pāṇḍava brother who was sitting.)
After seeing Kubera's abode and the slain rakṣasas, the brother spoke to his sitting Pāṇḍava brother. (03-158-9)
साहसाद्यदि वा मोहाद्भीम पापमिदं कृतम्। नैतत्ते सदृशं वीर मुनेरिव मृषावचः ॥०३-१५८-१०॥
sāhasādyadi vā mohādbhīma pāpamidaṃ kṛtam। naitatte sadṛśaṃ vīra muneriva mṛṣāvacaḥ ॥03-158-10॥
[साहसात् (sāhasāt) (sāhasāt) - from impulsiveness; यदि (yadi) (yadi) - if; वा (vā) (vā) - or; मोहात् (mohāt) (mohāt) - from delusion; भीम (bhīma) (bhīma) - O Bhīma; पापम् (pāpam) (pāpam) - sin; इदं (idaṃ) (idaṃ) - this; कृतम् (kṛtam) (kṛtam) - was done; न (na) (na) - not; एतत् (etat) (etat) - this; ते (te) (te) - by you; सदृशं (sadṛśaṃ) (sadṛśaṃ) - befitting; वीर (vīra) (vīra) - O hero; मुनेः (muneḥ) (muneḥ) - of a sage; इव (iva) (iva) - like; मृषा (mṛṣā) (mṛṣā) - false; वचः (vacaḥ) (vacaḥ) - speech;]
(O Bhīma, if this sin was done from impulsiveness or from delusion, O hero, this is not befitting for you, like false speech of a sage.)
O Bhīma, whether committed from impulsiveness or delusion, if this sin was done, O heroic one, it does not befit you, just as false speech does not befit a sage. (03-158-10)
राजद्विष्टं न कर्तव्यमिति धर्मविदो विदुः। त्रिदशानामिदं द्विष्टं भीमसेन त्वया कृतम् ॥०३-१५८-११॥
rājadviṣṭaṃ na kartavyam iti dharmavido viduḥ। tridaśānām idaṃ dviṣṭaṃ bhīmasena tvayā kṛtam॥03-158-11॥
[राजद्विष्टं (rājadviṣṭam) - hateful to the king; न (na) - not; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - to be done; इति (iti) - thus; धर्मविदः (dharmavidaḥ) - knowers of dharma; विदुः (viduḥ) - have known; त्रिदशानाम् (tridaśānām) - of the gods; इदं (idaṃ) - this; द्विष्टम् (dviṣṭam) - hateful; भीमसेन (bhīmasena) - O Bhīmasena; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done;]
(That which is hateful to the king is not to be done—thus have knowers of dharma known. Of the gods, this hateful act, O Bhīmasena, by you is done.)
The knowers of dharma have declared that one must not perform what is hateful to the king. O Bhīmasena, this deed, hateful even to the gods, has been done by you. (03-158-11)
अर्थधर्मावनादृत्य यः पापे कुरुते मनः। कर्मणां पार्थ पापानां स फलं विन्दते ध्रुवम् ॥ पुनरेवं न कर्तव्यं मम चेदिच्छसि प्रियम् ॥०३-१५८-१२॥
arthadharmāvanādṛtya yaḥ pāpe kurute manaḥ। karmaṇāṃ pārtha pāpānāṃ sa phalaṃ vindate dhruvam॥ punarevaṃ na kartavyaṃ mama cedicchasi priyam॥03-158-12॥
[अर्थधर्मावनादृत्य (arthadharmāvanādṛtya) - disregarding wealth and righteousness; यः (yaḥ) - who; पापे (pāpe) - in sin; कुरुते (kurute) - does; मनः (manaḥ) - the mind; कर्मणां (karmaṇāṃ) - of actions; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; पापानां (pāpānāṃ) - of sins; स (sa) - he; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; विन्दते (vindate) - obtains; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; न (na) - not; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - should be done; मम (mama) - my; चेत् (cet) - if; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire; प्रियम् (priyam) - dear; ॥०३-१५८-१२॥ (03-158-12) - ;]
(Disregarding wealth and righteousness, who in sin does the mind—of actions, O Pārtha, of sins—he fruit obtains certainly. Again, thus not should be done; my if you desire dear. (03-158-12))
O Pārtha, one who disregards wealth and righteousness and turns his mind towards sinful acts, certainly obtains the fruit of sinful actions. Therefore, do not act thus again, if you desire what is dear to me. (03-158-12)
एवमुक्त्वा स धर्मात्मा भ्राता भ्रातरमच्युतम्। अर्थतत्त्वविभागज्ञः कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ॥ विरराम महातेजास्तमेवार्थं विचिन्तयन् ॥०३-१५८-१३॥
evam-uktvā sa dharmātmā bhrātā bhrātaram acyutam। artha-tattva-vibhāga-jñaḥ kuntī-putro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ॥ virarāma mahā-tejāḥ tam eva arthaṃ vicintayan॥03-158-13॥
[एवम् (evam) (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) (uktvā) - having said; स (sa) (sa) - he; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; भ्राता (bhrātā) (bhrātā) - the brother; भ्रातरम् (bhrātaram) (bhrātaram) - to the brother; अच्युतम् (acyutam) (acyutam) - Acyuta (epithet of Krishna); अर्थतत्त्वविभागज्ञः (artha-tattva-vibhāga-jñaḥ) (artha-tattva-vibhāga-jñaḥ) - knower of the discrimination of the essence of purpose (knower of the true nature of meaning); कुन्तीपुत्रः (kuntī-putraḥ) (kuntī-putraḥ) - the son of Kunti; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; विरराम (virarāma) (virarāma) - ceased (was silent); महातेजाः (mahā-tejāḥ) (mahā-tejāḥ) - greatly effulgent; तम् (tam) (tam) - that; एव (eva) (eva) - only; अर्थम् (arthaṃ) (arthaṃ) - meaning, purpose; विचिन्तयन् (vicintayan) (vicintayan) - meditating (pondering);]
(Thus having spoken, he, the righteous-souled brother, to his brother Acyuta (Krishna), the knower of the division of the essence of purpose, the son of Kunti, Yudhishthira, ceased (became silent), being greatly effulgent, pondering only that purpose.)
Having spoken thus to Acyuta, his brother, Yudhishthira son of Kunti, knower of the true nature of purpose and greatly radiant, became silent, reflecting only on that matter. (03-158-13)
ततस्तु हतशिष्टा ये भीमसेनेन राक्षसाः। सहिताः प्रत्यपद्यन्त कुबेरसदनं प्रति ॥०३-१५८-१४॥
tatastu hataśiṣṭā ye bhīmasenena rākṣasāḥ। sahitāḥ pratyapadyanta kuberasadanaṃ prati ॥03-158-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तु (tu) - but; हतशिष्टाः (hataśiṣṭāḥ) - those remaining after being slain; ये (ye) - who; भीमसेनेन (bhīmasenena) - by Bhīmasena; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - rākṣasas; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; प्रत्यपद्यन्त (pratyapadyanta) - set out; कुबेरसदनं (kuberasadanam) - the abode of Kubera; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Then but those rākṣasas who remained after being slain by Bhīmasena, together, set out towards the abode of Kubera.)
Then those rākṣasas who were left alive after being slain by Bhīmasena set out together for the abode of Kubera. (03-158-14)
ते जवेन महावेगाः प्राप्य वैश्रवणालयम्। भीममार्तस्वरं चक्रुर्भीमसेनभयार्दिताः ॥०३-१५८-१५॥
te javena mahāvegāḥ prāpya vaiśravaṇālayam। bhīmamārtasvaraṃ cakrurbhīmasenabhayārdhitāḥ ॥03-158-15॥
[ते (te) - they; जवेन् (javena) - with speed; महावेगाः (mahāvegāḥ) - having great speed; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; वैश्रवणालयम् (vaiśravaṇālayam) - the abode of Vaiśravaṇa; भीममार्तस्वरं (bhīmamārtasvaram) - terrible, distressed sound; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - they made; भीमसेनभयार्दिताः (bhīmasenabhayārdhitāḥ) - afflicted by fear of Bhīmasena;]
(They, with speed, having great speed, having reached the abode of Vaiśravaṇa, terrible distressed sound made, afflicted by fear of Bhīmasena.)
Having reached the abode of Vaiśravaṇa with great speed, they, afflicted by fear of Bhīmasena, made a terrible cry of distress. (03-158-15)
न्यस्तशस्त्रायुधाः श्रान्ताः शोणिताक्तपरिच्छदाः। प्रकीर्णमूर्धजा राजन्यक्षाधिपतिमब्रुवन् ॥०३-१५८-१६॥
nyastaśastrāyudhāḥ śrāntāḥ śoṇitākta-paricchadāḥ। prakīrṇa-mūrdhajā rājan yakṣādhipatim abruvan ॥03-158-16॥
[न्यस्तशस्त्रायुधाः (nyastaśastrāyudhāḥ) - with weapons and arms laid down; श्रान्ताः (śrāntāḥ) - weary; शोणिताक्तपरिच्छदाः (śoṇitāktaparicchadāḥ) - with garments stained by blood; प्रकीर्णमूर्धजाः (prakīrṇamūrdhajāḥ) - with hair scattered (disheveled); राजन् (rājan) - O king; यक्षाधिपतिम् (yakṣādhipatim) - the lord of the Yakṣas; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - they said;]
(With weapons and arms laid down, weary, with garments stained by blood, with hair disheveled, O king, the lord of the Yakṣas they said.)
O king, those with weapons laid down, exhausted, their clothes stained with blood, and their hair disheveled, addressed the lord of the Yakṣas. (03-158-16)
गदापरिघनिस्त्रिंशतोमरप्रासयोधिनः। राक्षसा निहताः सर्वे तव देव पुरःसराः ॥०३-१५८-१७॥
gadā-parigha-nistriṃśa-tomara-prāsa-yodhinaḥ। rākṣasā nihatāḥ sarve tava deva puraḥ-sarāḥ ॥03-158-17॥
[गदापरिघनिस्त्रिंशतोमरप्रासयोधिनः (gadā-parigha-nistriṃśa-tomara-prāsa-yodhinaḥ) - club, iron-bar, sword, javelin, spear, warriors; राक्षसा (rākṣasā) - rakṣasas (demons); निहताः (nihatāḥ) - killed; सर्वे (sarve) - all; तव (tava) - your; देव (deva) - O lord; पुरःसराः (puraḥ-sarāḥ) - foremost, leading;]
(Club, iron-bar, sword, javelin, spear, warriors; rakṣasas killed all your O lord foremost (ones).)
All the foremost of your warriors wielding clubs, iron bars, swords, javelins, and spears — the rakṣasas — have been killed, O lord. (03-158-17)
प्रमृद्य तरसा शैलं मानुषेण धनेश्वर। एकेन सहिताः सङ्ख्ये हताः क्रोधवशा गणाः ॥०३-१५८-१८॥
pramṛdya tarasā śailaṃ mānuṣeṇa dhaneśvara। ekena sahitāḥ saṅkhye hatāḥ krodhavaśā gaṇāḥ ॥03-158-18॥
[प्रमृद्य (pramṛdya) - having crushed; तरसा (tarasā) - by force; शैलं (śailam) - mountain; मानुषेण (mānuṣeṇa) - by a man; धनेश्वर (dhaneśvara) - O lord of wealth; एकेन (ekena) - by one; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in the number; हताः (hatāḥ) - killed; क्रोधवशा (krodhavaśā) - overpowered by anger; गणाः (gaṇāḥ) - groups;]
(Having crushed the mountain by force by a man, O lord of wealth, together by one in number, overpowered by anger, groups were killed.)
O lord of wealth, a man, having crushed the mountain by force, slew the groups, who were overpowered by anger, all together by one alone. (3-158-18)
प्रवरा रक्षसेन्द्राणां यक्षाणां च धनाधिप। शेरते निहता देव गतसत्त्वाः परासवः ॥०३-१५८-१९॥
pravara rakṣasendrāṇām yakṣāṇāṃ ca dhanādhipa। śerate nihatā deva gatasattvāḥ parāsavaḥ ॥03-158-19॥

(The foremost of the lords of rākṣasas, of yakṣas, and O lord of wealth, slain, O god, whose life has departed, the rivals lie.)
O lord of wealth, the foremost among the leaders of rākṣasas and yakṣas—these rivals whose lives have departed—now lie slain, O god. (03-158-19)
लब्धः शैलो वयं मुक्ता मणिमांस्ते सखा हतः। मानुषेण कृतं कर्म विधत्स्व यदनन्तरम् ॥०३-१५८-२०॥
labdhaḥ śailo vayaṃ muktā maṇimāṃste sakhā hataḥ। mānuṣeṇa kṛtaṃ karma vidhatsva yadanantaram ॥03-158-20॥

(Obtained rock, we released, bearing a jewel, your friend killed. By a human done action, do what hereafter.)
The rock has been obtained, we have been released, your jewel-bearing friend has been killed. Since this action has been done by a human, do now whatever is next. (03-158-20)
स तच्छ्रुत्वा तु सङ्क्रुद्धः सर्वयक्षगणाधिपः। कोपसंरक्तनयनः कथमित्यब्रवीद्वचः ॥०३-१५८-२१॥
sa tac chrutvā tu saṅkruddhaḥ sarvayakṣagaṇādhipaḥ। kopasaṁraktanayanaḥ katham ity abravīd vacaḥ ॥03-158-21॥

But he, the enraged lord of all the yakṣa hosts, his eyes reddened with anger, on hearing that, said the words: "How?" (03-158-21)
द्वितीयमपराध्यन्तं भीमं श्रुत्वा धनेश्वरः। चुक्रोध यक्षाधिपतिर्युज्यतामिति चाब्रवीत् ॥०३-१५८-२२॥
dvitīyam aparādhy-antam bhīmam śrutvā dhaneśvaraḥ। cukrodha yakṣādhipatiḥ yujyatām iti ca abravīt॥03-158-22॥

(The second, up to the end of the offence, terrible, hearing, the lord of wealth; became angry, the lord of Yakṣas; 'let it be harnessed', thus and he said.)
Having heard the second terrible offence (story), the lord of wealth, the lord of Yakṣas, became angry and said, "Let it be harnessed." (03-158-22)
अथाभ्रघनसङ्काशं गिरिकूटमिवोच्छ्रितम्। हयैः संयोजयामासुर्गान्धर्वैरुत्तमं रथम् ॥०३-१५८-२३॥
athābhra-ghana-saṅkāśaṃ giri-kūṭam-ivocchritam। hayaiḥ saṃyojayāmāsur gāndharvair uttamaṃ ratham॥03-158-23॥

(Then (they) yoked (the) excellent chariot, like a mountain peak elevated like a dense rain-cloud, by horses by Gandharvas.)
Then the Gandharvas harnessed the excellent chariot, which was elevated like a mountain peak and resembled a dense rain-cloud, with horses. (03-158-23)
तस्य सर्वगुणोपेता विमलाक्षा हयोत्तमाः। तेजोबलजवोपेता नानारत्नविभूषिताः ॥०३-१५८-२४॥
tasya sarvaguṇopetā vimalākṣā hayottamāḥ। tejobalajavopetā nānāratnavibhūṣitāḥ॥03-158-24॥

शोभमाना रथे युक्तास्तरिष्यन्त इवाशुगाः। हर्षयामासुरन्योन्यमिङ्गितैर्विजयावहैः ॥०३-१५८-२५॥
śobhamānā rathe yuktās tariṣyanta iva āśugāḥ। harṣayāmāsuḥ anyonyam iṅgitaiḥ vijayāvahaiḥ ॥03-158-25॥

(Shining, yoked to the chariot, seeming to cross as if swiftly, they gladdened one another with gestures conveying victory.)

स तमास्थाय भगवान्राजराजो महारथम्। प्रययौ देवगन्धर्वैः स्तूयमानो महाद्युतिः ॥०३-१५८-२६॥
sa tam āsthāya bhagavān rājarājo mahāratham। prayayau deva-gandharvaiḥ stūyamānaḥ mahādyutiḥ॥03-158-26॥

सायुधा बद्धनिस्त्रिंशा यक्षा दशशतायुताः। जवेन महता वीराः परिवार्योपतस्थिरे ॥०३-१५८-२८॥
sāyudhā baddhanistriṃśā yakṣā daśaśatāyutāḥ। javena mahatā vīrāḥ parivāryopatasthire॥03-158-28॥

te pakṣiṇa iva utpatya gireḥ śṛṅgaṃ mahājavāḥ। tasthuḥ teṣāṃ samabhyāśe dhaneśvara-puraḥ-sarāḥ॥ 03-158-31॥

(Then him cheerful-minded towards the Pāṇḍavas, O Bhārata, having observed, the Yakṣas and Gandharvas unperturbed remained.)

पाण्डवाश्च महात्मानः प्रणम्य धनदं प्रभुम्। नकुलः सहदेवश्च धर्मपुत्रश्च धर्मवित् ॥०३-१५८-३३॥
pāṇḍavāś ca mahātmānaḥ praṇamya dhanadaṃ prabhum। nakulaḥ sahadevaś ca dharmaputraś ca dharmavit ॥03-158-33॥

The Pāṇḍavas, those great souls, after bowing to Dhanada the lord, together with Nakula, Sahadeva, and Yudhiṣṭhira the son of Dharma and knower of righteousness. (03-158-33)
अपराद्धमिवात्मानं मन्यमाना महारथाः। तस्थुः प्राञ्जलयः सर्वे परिवार्य धनेश्वरम् ॥०३-१५८-३४॥

(As if (they had) committed an offense, thinking themselves (so), the great warriors, all with joined palms, stood (there), surrounding the lord of wealth.)
All the great chariot-warriors, believing themselves to have committed an offense, stood with joined palms, encircling the lord of wealth. (03-158-34)
शय्यासनवरं श्रीमत्पुष्पकं विश्वकर्मणा। विहितं चित्रपर्यन्तमातिष्ठत धनाधिपः ॥०३-१५८-३५॥
śayyāsanavaraṃ śrīmatpuṣpakaṃ viśvakarmaṇā। vihitaṃ citraparyantam ātiṣṭhata dhanādhipaḥ ॥03-158-35॥

तमासीनं महाकायाः शङ्कुकर्णा महाजवाः। उपोपविविशुर्यक्षा राक्षसाश्च सहस्रशः ॥०३-१५८-३६॥
tam āsīnam mahākāyāḥ śaṅkukarṇā mahājavāḥ। upopaviviśur yakṣā rākṣasāś ca sahasraśaḥ॥03-158-36॥

There was no fear of Bhīma, nor any faintness, even though he had been wounded by the Rākṣasas, in that condition, even as he looked upon Kubera. (03-158-39)
आददानं शितान्बाणान्योद्धुकाममवस्थितम्। दृष्ट्वा भीमं धर्मसुतमब्रवीन्नरवाहनः ॥०३-१५८-४०॥
ādadānaṃ śitān bāṇān yoddhu-kāmam avasthitam। dṛṣṭvā bhīmaṃ dharma-sutam abravīn naravāhanaḥ॥03-158-40॥

(Taking sharp arrows, desirous of fighting, standing; having seen Bhima, son of Dharma, Nara-vāhana (Arjuna) said.)
Seeing Bhima, the son of Dharma, standing ready with sharp arrows, eager to fight, Arjuna (Nara-vāhana) spoke. (03-158-40)
विदुस्त्वां सर्वभूतानि पार्थ भूतहिते रतम्। निर्भयश्चापि शैलाग्रे वस त्वं सह बन्धुभिः ॥०३-१५८-४१॥
vidus tvāṁ sarvabhūtāni pārtha bhūtahite ratam। nirbhayaś cāpi śailāgre vasa tvaṁ saha bandhubhiḥ॥03-158-41॥
[विदुः (viduḥ) - (they) know; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; सर्वभूतानि (sarvabhūtāni) - all beings; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pṛthā; भूतहिते (bhūtahite) - in the welfare of beings; रतम् (ratam) - engaged; निर्भयः (nirbhayaḥ) - fearless; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; शैलाग्रे (śailāgre) - on the mountain peak; वस (vasa) - dwell; त्वम् (tvam) - you; सह (saha) - with; बन्धुभिः (bandhubhiḥ) - relatives;]
(All beings know you, O Pārtha, engaged in the welfare of beings. Fearless and also on the mountain peak, dwell you with relatives.)
O Pārtha, all beings know you as one engaged in the welfare of creatures. Remain fearless and dwell on the mountain peak together with your relatives. (03-158-41)
न च मन्युस्त्वया कार्यो भीमसेनस्य पाण्डव। कालेनैते हताः पूर्वं निमित्तमनुजस्तव ॥०३-१५८-४२॥
na ca manyus tvayā kāryo bhīmasenasya pāṇḍava। kālenaitaḥ hatāḥ pūrvaṃ nimittam anujas tava ॥03-158-42॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मन्युः (manyuḥ) - anger; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कार्यः (kāryaḥ) - should be done; भीमसेनस्य (bhīmasenasya) - of Bhīmasena; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O son of Pāṇḍu; कालेन (kālena) - by Time; एते (ete) - these; हताः (hatāḥ) - killed; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - already; निमित्तम् (nimittam) - the cause; अनुजः (anujaḥ) - younger brother; तव (tava) - your;]
(Not and anger by you should be done of Bhīmasena, O son of Pāṇḍu. By Time these were already killed; the cause (is) your younger brother.)
You should not feel anger towards Bhīmasena, O son of Pāṇḍu. By Time these were already killed; your younger brother was only the cause. (03-158-42)
व्रीडा चात्र न कर्तव्या साहसं यदिदं कृतम्। दृष्टश्चापि सुरैः पूर्वं विनाशो यक्षरक्षसाम् ॥०३-१५८-४३॥
vrīḍā cātra na kartavyā sāhasaṃ yad idaṃ kṛtam। dṛṣṭaś cāpi suraiḥ pūrvaṃ vināśo yakṣarakṣasām ॥03-158-43॥
[व्रीडा (vrīḍā) - shame; च (ca) - and; अत्र (atra) - here; न (na) - not; कर्तव्या (kartavyā) - to be done; साहसं (sāhasam) - bold act; यत् (yat) - which; इदं (idaṃ) - this; कृतम् (kṛtam) - has been done; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - was seen; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सुरैः (suraiḥ) - by the gods; पूर्वं (pūrvaṃ) - formerly; विनाशः (vināśaḥ) - destruction; यक्षरक्षसाम् (yakṣarakṣasām) - of the yakṣas and rākṣasas;]
(Shame and here not to be done, the bold act which this has been done. Was seen also by the gods formerly, destruction of the yakṣas and rākṣasas.)
Here, shame should not be felt for this bold act that has been done. Previously, the destruction of the yakṣas and rākṣasas was also seen by the gods. (03-158-43)
न भीमसेने कोपो मे प्रीतोऽस्मि भरतर्षभ। कर्मणानेन भीमस्य मम तुष्टिरभूत्पुरा ॥०३-१५८-४४॥
na bhīmasene kopo me prīto'smi bharatarṣabha। karmaṇānena bhīmasya mama tuṣṭirabhūtpurā ॥03-158-44॥

(Not in Bhīmasena anger my, I am pleased, O bull of the Bharatas. By this deed of Bhīma, my satisfaction became previously.)
O bull of the Bharatas, I do not feel anger toward Bhīmasena; I am pleased. By this action of Bhīma, I was earlier satisfied. (03-158-44)
एवमुक्त्वा तु राजानं भीमसेनमभाषत। नैतन्मनसि मे तात वर्तते कुरुसत्तम ॥ यदिदं साहसं भीम कृष्णार्थे कृतवानसि ॥०३-१५८-४५॥
evam-uktvā tu rājānaṃ bhīmasenam abhāṣata. na etat manasi me tāta vartate kuru-sattama ॥ yad idaṃ sāhasaṃ bhīma kṛṣṇārthe kṛtavān asi ॥03-158-45॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; तु (tu) - but; राजानम् (rājānam) - to the king; भीमसेनम् (bhīmasenam) - to Bhīmasena; अभाषत (abhāṣata) - spoke; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; मनसि (manasi) - in (my) mind; मे (me) - my; तात (tāta) - dear one; वर्तते (vartate) - exists; कुरुसत्तम (kuru-sattama) - O best of the Kurus; यत् (yat) - that which; इदं (idaṃ) - this; साहसम् (sāhasam) - bold deed; भीम (bhīma) - O Bhīma; कृष्णार्थे (kṛṣṇārthe) - for Kṛṣṇa's sake; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - you have done; असि (asi) - you are (have);]
(Thus, having spoken to the king, Bhīmasena spoke: "This, dear one, does not exist in my mind, O best of the Kurus; that which is this bold deed, O Bhīma, for Kṛṣṇa's sake you have done." (03-158-45))
Having thus addressed the king, Bhīmasena said: "O beloved, this does not exist in my mind, O best of the Kurus; this bold act, O Bhīma, for the sake of Kṛṣṇa, you have done." (03-158-45)
मामनादृत्य देवांश्च विनाशं यक्षरक्षसाम्। स्वबाहुबलमाश्रित्य तेनाहं प्रीतिमांस्त्वयि ॥ शापादस्मि विनिर्मुक्तो घोरादद्य वृकोदर ॥०३-१५८-४६॥
māmanādṛtya devāṃś ca vināśaṃ yakṣarakṣasām. svabāhubalam āśritya tenāhaṃ prītimāṃs tvayi ॥ śāpād asmi vinirmukto ghorād adya vṛkodara ॥03-158-46॥
[माम् (mām) - me; अनादृत्य (anādṛtya) - disregarding; देवान् (devān) - the gods; च (ca) - and; विनाशम् (vināśam) - destruction; यक्षरक्षसाम् (yakṣarakṣasām) - of yakṣas and rākṣasas; स्वबाहुबलम् (svabāhubalam) - one's own arm's strength; आश्रित्य (āśritya) - depending upon; तेन (tena) - by that; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रीतिमान् (prītimān) - having joy; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; शापात् (śāpāt) - from the curse; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; विनिर्मुक्तः (vinirmuktaḥ) - completely freed; घोरात् (ghorāt) - from terrible (one); अद्य (adya) - today; वृकोदर (vṛkodara) - O Vṛkodara;]
(Me disregarding and the gods, the destruction of yakṣas and rākṣasas, one's own arm's strength depending upon, by that I having joy in you; from the curse I am completely freed from terrible (one) today, O Vṛkodara.)
Disregarding me and the gods, relying upon the strength of one's own arms for the destruction of yakṣas and rākṣasas, by that I am pleased with you; today, O Vṛkodara, I am completely freed from the terrible curse. (03-158-46)
अहं पूर्वमगस्त्येन क्रुद्धेन परमर्षिणा। शप्तोऽपराधे कस्मिंश्चित्तस्यैषा निष्कृतिः कृता ॥०३-१५८-४७॥
ahaṃ pūrvam agastyena kruddhena paramarṣiṇā। śapto'parādhe kasmiṃścit tasya eṣā niṣkṛtiḥ kṛtā ॥03-158-47॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - formerly; अगस्त्येन (agastyena) - by Agastya; क्रुद्धेन (kruddhena) - being enraged; परमर्षिणा (paramarṣiṇā) - by the supreme sage; शप्तः (śaptaḥ) - cursed; अपराधे (aparādhe) - on an offense; कस्मिंश्चित् (kasmiṃścit) - for some (unknown); तस्य (tasya) - of that; एषा (eṣā) - this; निष्कृतिः (niṣkṛtiḥ) - atonement; कृता (kṛtā) - has been done;]
(I formerly by Agastya, being enraged, by the supreme sage, was cursed on an offense for some (unknown); of that, this atonement has been done.)
I was earlier cursed by the supreme sage Agastya, who was angry with me on account of some offense; this is the atonement for that. (03-158-47)
दृष्टो हि मम सङ्क्लेशः पुरा पाण्डवनन्दन। न तवात्रापराधोऽस्ति कथञ्चिदपि शत्रुहन् ॥०३-१५८-४८॥
dṛṣṭo hi mama saṅkleśaḥ purā pāṇḍavanandana। na tavātrāparādho'sti kathañcidapi śatruhan ॥03-158-48॥
[दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - (it has been) seen; हि (hi) - indeed; मम (mama) - by me; सङ्क्लेशः (saṅkleśaḥ) - affliction; पुरा (purā) - formerly; पाण्डवनन्दन (pāṇḍavanandana) - O delight of the Pāṇḍavas; न (na) - not; तव (tava) - of you; अत्र (atra) - here; अपराधः (aparādhaḥ) - fault; अस्ति (asti) - exists; कथञ्चित् (kathañcit) - in any way; अपि (api) - even; शत्रुहन् (śatruhan) - O slayer of enemies;]
(Seen indeed by me (is) affliction formerly, O delight of the Pāṇḍavas. Not of you here (any) fault exists in any way even, O slayer of enemies.)
Indeed, my affliction was seen by me previously, O delight of the Pāṇḍavas. There is not any fault of yours here at all, O slayer of enemies. (03-158-48)

कथं शप्तोऽसि भगवन्नगस्त्येन महात्मना। श्रोतुमिच्छाम्यहं देव तवैतच्छापकारणम् ॥०३-१५८-४९॥
kathaṁ śapto'si bhagavann-agastyena mahātmanā। śrotum icchāmy ahaṁ deva tava etac-chāpa-kāraṇam॥03-158-49॥
[कथं (katham) - how; शप्तः (śaptaḥ) - cursed; असि (asi) - are (you); भगवन् (bhagavan) - O venerable one; अगस्त्येन (agastyena) - by Agastya; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; अहम् (aham) - I; देव (deva) - O god; तव (tava) - your; एतत् (etat) - this; शाप (śāpa) - curse; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - cause;]
(How cursed are (you), O venerable one, by Agastya, the great-souled. To hear I desire, O god, your this curse cause.)
O venerable one, how were you cursed by the great-souled Agastya? O god, I desire to hear the cause of your curse. (03-158-49)
इदं चाश्चर्यभूतं मे यत्क्रोधात्तस्य धीमतः। तदैव त्वं न निर्दग्धः सबलः सपदानुगः ॥०३-१५८-५०॥
idaṃ cāścaryabhūtaṃ me yat krodhāt tasya dhīmataḥ। tadaiva tvaṃ na nirdagdhaḥ sabalaḥ sapadānugaḥ॥03-158-50॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; च (ca) - and; आश्चर्यभूतं (āścaryabhūtaṃ) - wondrous; मे (me) - to me; यत् (yat) - that; क्रोधात् (krodhāt) - from anger; तस्य (tasya) - of him; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - wise; तदा (tadā) - then; एव (eva) - indeed; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; न (na) - not; निर्दग्धः (nirdagdhaḥ) - burned; सबलः (sabalaḥ) - with your forces; सपदानुगः (sapadānugaḥ) - with your attendants;]
(This and wondrous it is to me, that from anger of him, the wise one, then indeed you were not burned, with your forces, (and) with your attendants.)
It is also wondrous to me that, from the anger of that wise one, you were not burned up then along with your army and attendants. (03-158-50)

devatānām abhūn mantraḥ kuśavatyāṃ nareśvara। vṛtas tatrāham agamaṃ mahāpadmaśatais tribhiḥ ॥ yakṣāṇāṃ ghorarūpāṇāṃ vividhāyudhadhāriṇām ॥03-158-51॥
[देवतानाम् (devatānām) - of the deities; अभून् (abhūn) - became; मन्त्रः (mantraḥ) - mantra; कुशवत्याम् (kuśavatyām) - in Kuśavatī; नरेश्वर (nareśvara) - O king; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - surrounded; तत्र (tatra) - there; अहम् (aham) - I; अगमम् (agamaṃ) - went; महापद्मशतैः (mahāpadmaśataiḥ) - by hundreds of Mahāpadmas; त्रिभिः (tribhiḥ) - three; यक्षाणाम् (yakṣāṇām) - of the Yakṣas; घोररूपाणाम् (ghorarūpāṇām) - of terrible forms; विविधायुधधारिणाम् (vividhāyudhadhāriṇām) - bearing various weapons;]
(Of the deities became the mantra in Kuśavatī, O king. Surrounded there I went with three hundreds of Mahāpadmas of Yakṣas of terrible forms, bearing various weapons.)
O king, the mantra of the deities came into being in Kuśavatī. There I went, surrounded by three hundred Mahāpadmas of Yakṣas of terrible form, bearing various weapons. (03-158-51)
अध्वन्यहमथापश्यमगस्त्यमृषिसत्तमम्। उग्रं तपस्तपस्यन्तं यमुनातीरमाश्रितम् ॥ नानापक्षिगणाकीर्णं पुष्पितद्रुमशोभितम् ॥०३-१५८-५२॥
adhvany aham athāpaśyam agastyam ṛṣi-sattamam। ugraṃ tapas tapasyantaṃ yamunā-tīram āśritam॥ nānā-pakṣi-gaṇa-ākīrṇaṃ puṣpita-druma-śobhitam॥03-158-52॥
[अध्वनि (adhvani) - on the path; अहम् (aham) - I; अथ (atha) - then; अपश्यम् (apaśyam) - saw; अगस्त्यम् (agastyam) - Agastya; ऋषिसत्तमम् (ṛṣi-sattamam) - the foremost among sages; उग्रं (ugram) - great; तपः (tapas) - austerity; तपस्यन्तम् (tapasyantam) - performing (the) austerity; यमुनातीरम् (yamunā-tīram) - the bank of the Yamunā; आश्रितम् (āśritam) - residing at; नानापक्षिगणाकीर्णम् (nānā-pakṣi-gaṇa-ākīrṇam) - filled with many flocks of birds; पुष्पितद्रुमशोभितम् (puṣpita-druma-śobhitam) - adorned with flowering trees;]
(On the path, I then saw Agastya, the foremost among sages, performing great austerity, residing at the bank of the Yamunā, filled with many flocks of birds, adorned with flowering trees.)
While on the path, I then saw Agastya, the foremost of sages, engaged in severe penance, residing on the bank of the Yamunā, a place filled with many birds and adorned with blossoming trees. (03-158-52)
तमूर्ध्वबाहुं दृष्ट्वा तु सूर्यस्याभिमुखं स्थितम्। तेजोराशिं दीप्यमानं हुताशनमिवैधितम् ॥०३-१५८-५३॥
tam ūrdhvabāhuṃ dṛṣṭvā tu sūryasyābhimukhaṃ sthitam। tejorāśiṃ dīpyamānaṃ hutāśanam iva edhitam॥03-158-53॥
[तम् (tam) - him; ऊर्ध्वबाहुं (ūrdhva-bāhuṃ) - with upraised arm; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तु (tu) - however; सूर्यस्याभिमुखं (sūryasya abhimukham) - facing towards the sun; स्थितम् (sthitam) - standing; तेजोराशिं (tejo-rāśim) - a mass (store) of brilliance; दीप्यमानं (dīpyamānam) - shining; हुताशनम् (hutāśanam) - fire; इव (iva) - like; एधितम् (edhitam) - blazing;]
(Having seen him with upraised arm, however, standing facing towards the sun, a mass of brilliance shining, blazing like fire.)
However, seeing him standing there with an upraised arm, facing the sun, shining like a mass of blazing fire, like a burning fire. (03-158-53)
राक्षसाधिपतिः श्रीमान्मणिमान्नाम मे सखा। मौर्ख्यादज्ञानभावाच्च दर्पान्मोहाच्च भारत ॥ न्यष्ठीवदाकाशगतो महर्षेस्तस्य मूर्धनि ॥०३-१५८-५४॥
rākṣasādhipatiḥ śrīmān maṇimān nāma me sakhā | maurkhyād ajñāna-bhāvāc ca darpān mohāc ca bhārata || nyaṣṭhīvad ākāśagato maharṣes tasya mūrdhani ||03-158-54||
[राक्षसाधिपतिः (rākṣasādhipatiḥ) - lord of the Rākṣasas; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - fortunate; मणिमान् (maṇimān) - Maṇimān (proper name); नाम (nāma) - named; मे (me) - my; सखा (sakhā) - friend; मौर्ख्यात् (maurkhyāt) - from folly; अज्ञानभावात् (ajñāna-bhāvāt) - from the condition of ignorance; च (ca) - and; दर्पात् (darpāt) - from pride; मोहात् (mohāt) - from delusion; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; न्यष्ठीवत् (nyaṣṭhīvat) - like spitting; आकाशगतः (ākāśagataḥ) - gone into the sky; महर्षेः (maharṣeḥ) - of the great sage; तस्य (tasya) - his; मूर्धनि (mūrdhani) - upon the head;]
(The lord of the Rākṣasas, fortunate, Maṇimān by name, my friend, from folly, from the condition of ignorance and from pride and from delusion, O Bhārata, like spitting, having gone into the sky, upon the head of that great sage.)
O Bhārata, my friend Maṇimān, the fortunate lord of the Rākṣasas, out of folly, ignorance, pride and delusion, spat down from the sky upon the head of that great sage. (03-158-54)
स कोपान्मामुवाचेदं दिशः सर्वा दहन्निव। मामवज्ञाय दुष्टात्मा यस्मादेष सखा तव ॥०३-१५८-५५॥
sa kopān mām uvāca idaṃ diśaḥ sarvā dahann iva। mām avajñāya duṣṭātmā yasmād eṣa sakhā tava ॥03-158-55॥
[स (sa) - he; कोपात् (kopāt) - from anger; माम् (mām) - me; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; इदं (idaṃ) - this; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; दहन् (dahan) - burning; इव (iva) - as if; माम् (mām) - me; अवज्ञाय (avajñāya) - disregarding; दुष्टात्मा (duṣṭātmā) - wicked-minded; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because; एष (eṣa) - this; सखा (sakhā) - friend; तव (tava) - your;]
(He from anger spoke to me this, the directions all as if burning; me disregarding, the wicked-minded, because this is your friend.)
He, burning with anger, spoke these words to me, as if all the directions were on fire: 'Because this wicked-minded one, disregarding me, is your friend.' (03-158-55)
धर्षणां कृतवानेतां पश्यतस्ते धनेश्वर। तस्मात्सहैभिः सैन्यैस्ते वधं प्राप्स्यति मानुषात् ॥०३-१५८-५६॥
dharṣaṇāṃ kṛtavānetāṃ paśyataste dhaneśvara। tasmātsahaibhiḥ sainyaiste vadhaṃ prāpsyati mānuṣāt ॥03-158-56॥
[धर्षणाम् (dharṣaṇām) - outrage; insult; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - has committed; एताम् (etām) - this (woman); पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - who is seeing; watching; ते (te) - your; धनेश्वर (dhaneśvara) - O lord of wealth; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; सह (saha) - with; एभिः (ebhiḥ) - these; सैन्यैः (sainyaiḥ) - armies; ते (te) - your; वधम् (vadham) - death; destruction; प्राप्स्यति (prāpsyati) - will attain; will obtain; मानुषात् (mānuṣāt) - from a man; ॥०३-१५८-५६॥ (॥03-158-56॥) -;]
(Outrage has been committed against this (woman) by you while you are watching, O lord of wealth. Therefore, together with these armies, you will attain destruction from a man.)
O lord of wealth, this outrage has been committed (against her) in your sight. Therefore, you and your armies will meet your destruction at the hands of a man. (03-158-56)
त्वं चाप्येभिर्हतैः सैन्यैः क्लेशं प्राप्स्यसि दुर्मते। तमेव मानुषं दृष्ट्वा किल्बिषाद्विप्रमोक्ष्यसे ॥०३-१५८-५७॥
tvaṃ cāpyebhirhataiḥ sainyaiḥ kleśaṃ prāpsyasi durmate. tameva mānuṣaṃ dṛṣṭvā kilbiṣād vipramokṣyase ॥03-158-57॥
[त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; एभिः (ebhiḥ) - by these; हतैः (hataiḥ) - killed; सैन्यैः (sainyaiḥ) - armies; क्लेशं (kleśam) - distress; प्राप्स्यसि (prāpsyasi) - you will obtain; दुर्मते (durmate) - O wicked-minded; तम् (tam) - him; एव (eva) - only; मानुषम् (mānuṣam) - the human; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; किल्बिषात् (kilbiṣāt) - from sin; विप्रमोक्ष्यसे (vipramokṣyase) - you shall be released;]
(You also, O wicked-minded, by these slain armies shall obtain distress. Having seen that very human, you will be released from sin.)
You too, O wicked-minded, will suffer distress from these slain armies. Seeing that very man, you will be freed from your sin. (03-158-57)
सैन्यानां तु तवैतेषां पुत्रपौत्रबलान्वितम्। न शापं प्राप्स्यते घोरं गच्छ तेऽऽज्ञां करिष्यति ॥०३-१५८-५८॥
sainyānāṃ tu tavaiteṣāṃ putrapautrabalānvitam। na śāpaṃ prāpsyate ghoraṃ gaccha te''jñāṃ kariṣyati॥03-158-58॥
[सैन्यानां (sainyānām) - of the armies; तु (tu) - but; तव (tava) - your; एतेषां (eteṣām) - of these; पुत्रपौत्रबलान्वितम् (putra-pautra-bala-anvitam) - endowed with the strength of sons and grandsons; न (na) - not; शापं (śāpam) - curse; प्राप्स्यते (prāpsyate) - will obtain; घोरं (ghoram) - terrible; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; ते (te) - your; आज्ञां (ājñām) - command; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will do;]
(Of the armies but, of yours and of these, endowed with the strength of sons and grandsons, not the terrible curse will obtain. Go, your command he will do.)
But as for the armies—yours and these, endowed with the strength of sons and grandsons—he will not incur a terrible curse. Go, he will follow your command. (03-158-58)
एष शापो मया प्राप्तः प्राक्तस्मादृषिसत्तमात्। स भीमेन महाराज भ्रात्रा तव विमोक्षितः ॥०३-१५८-५९॥
eṣa śāpo mayā prāptaḥ prāktasmād ṛṣisattamāt। sa bhīmena mahārāja bhrātrā tava vimokṣitaḥ॥03-158-59॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; शापः (śāpaḥ) - curse; मया (mayā) - by me; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - received; प्राक्तस्मात् (prāktasmāt) - before from him; ऋषिसत्तमात् (ṛṣisattamāt) - from the foremost sage; सः (saḥ) - that; भीमेन (bhīmena) - by Bhima; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; भ्रात्रा (bhrātrā) - by the brother; तव (tava) - of you; विमोक्षितः (vimokṣitaḥ) - set free;]
(This curse by me received formerly from the foremost sage; that (curse), O great king, by Bhima—your brother—was set free.)
This curse, which I received earlier from the foremost of sages, O great king, has been lifted by Bhima, your brother. (3-158-59)
