yudhiṣṭhira dhṛtir dākṣyaṃ deśakālau parākramaḥ । lokatantra-vidhānānām eṣa pañcavidho vidhiḥ ॥03-159-1॥
[युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - O Yudhiṣṭhira; धृतिः (dhṛtiḥ) - steadfastness; दाक्ष्यं (dākṣyam) - skill; देशकालौ (deśakālau) - place and time; पराक्रमः (parākramaḥ) - valor; लोकतन्त्रविधानानाम् (lokatantravidhānānām) - of the institutions of public governance; एष (eṣa) - this; पञ्चविधः (pañcavidhaḥ) - of five kinds; विधिः (vidhiḥ) - rule;]
(O Yudhiṣṭhira, steadfastness, skill, place and time, valor—these are the fivefold rule of the institutions of public governance. (03-159-1))

धृतिमन्तश्च दक्षाश्च स्वे स्वे कर्मणि भारत। पराक्रमविधानज्ञा नराः कृतयुगेऽभवन् ॥०३-१५९-२॥
dhṛtimantaś ca dakṣāś ca sve sve karmaṇi bhārata. parākrama-vidhāna-jñā narāḥ kṛtayuge 'bhavan ॥03-159-2॥

(Endowed with fortitude and competent, in their own respective duties, O Bhārata, knowers of the arrangement of valor, men in the Kṛta age were.)
O Bhārata, in the Kṛta age, men were endowed with fortitude, competent in their own respective duties, and knowers of the arrangement of valor. (03-159-2)
धृतिमान्देशकालज्ञः सर्वधर्मविधानवित्। क्षत्रियः क्षत्रियश्रेष्ठ पृथिवीमनुशास्ति वै ॥०३-१५९-३॥

(Possessing firmness, knower of place and time, knower of all rules of dharma, the kṣatriya, O best of the kṣatriyas, the earth rules over indeed.)
O best of the kṣatriyas, a kṣatriya who possesses firmness, is knowledgeable of place and time, and is versed in all rules of dharma, indeed rules the earth. (03-159-3)
य एवं वर्तते पार्थ पुरुषः सर्वकर्मसु। स लोके लभते वीर यशः प्रेत्य च सद्गतिम् ॥०३-१५९-४॥
ya evaṃ vartate pārtha puruṣaḥ sarvakarmasu। sa loke labhate vīra yaśaḥ pretya ca sadgatim ॥03-159-4॥
[य (ya) - who; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; वर्तते (vartate) - acts; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; सर्वकर्मसु (sarvakarmasu) - in all actions; स (sa) - he; लोके (loke) - in the world; लभते (labhate) - obtains; वीर (vīra) - heroic; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; प्रेत्य (pretya) - after departing; च (ca) - and; सद्गतिम् (sadgatim) - good state;]
(Who thus acts, O Pārtha, the man in all actions, he in the world obtains heroic fame and, after departing, a good state.)
O Pārtha, the man who thus acts in all actions attains heroic fame in this world and, after departing, a blessed state. (03-159-4)
देशकालान्तरप्रेप्सुः कृत्वा शक्रः पराक्रमम्। सम्प्राप्तस्त्रिदिवे राज्यं वृत्रहा वसुभिः सह ॥०३-१५९-५॥
deśakālāntaraprepsuḥ kṛtvā śakraḥ parākramam। samprāptastridive rājyaṃ vṛtrahā vasubhiḥ saha॥03-159-5॥

(One desiring another place and time, having performed valour, Śakra (Indra), having obtained the kingdom in heaven, the slayer of Vṛtra, along with the Vasus.)
Śakra (Indra), wishing for change in place and time, having displayed valor, attained the sovereignty of heaven, the slayer of Vṛtra, together with the Vasus. (03-159-5)
पापात्मा पापबुद्धिर्यः पापमेवानुवर्तते। कर्मणामविभागज्ञः प्रेत्य चेह च नश्यति ॥०३-१५९-६॥
pāpātmā pāpabuddhir yaḥ pāpam eva anuvartate। karmaṇām avibhāgajñaḥ pretya ca iha ca naśyati ॥03-159-6॥
[पापात्मा (pāpātmā) - with a sinful self; पापबुद्धिः (pāpabuddhiḥ) - with a sinful mind; यः (yaḥ) - who; पापम् (pāpam) - sin; एव (eva) - only; अनुवर्तते (anuvartate) - follows; कर्मणाम् (karmaṇām) - of actions; अविभागज्ञः (avibhāgajñaḥ) - unaware of distinctions; प्रेत्य (pretya) - having died; च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here; च (ca) - and; नश्यति (naśyati) - perishes;]
(With a sinful self, with a sinful mind, who only follows sin, unaware of distinctions of actions, having died and here and perishes.)
He who has a sinful self and sinful mind, who only follows sin, who does not know the distinctions of actions, perishes both after death and in this world. (03-159-6)
अकालज्ञः सुदुर्मेधाः कार्याणामविशेषवित्। वृथाचारसमारम्भः प्रेत्य चेह च नश्यति ॥०३-१५९-७॥
akālajñaḥ sudurmedhāḥ kāryāṇām aviśeṣavit | vṛthācārasaṃārambhaḥ pretya ca iha ca naśyati ॥03-159-7॥
[अकालज्ञः (akālajñaḥ) - one ignorant of the right time; सुदुर्मेधाः (sudurmedhāḥ) - very foolish; कार्याणाम् (kāryāṇām) - of tasks; अविशेषवित् (aviśeṣavit) - not knowing the distinctions; वृथाचारसमारम्भः (vṛthācārasaṃārambhaḥ) - engaged in fruitless actions; प्रेत्य (pretya) - after death; च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here; च (ca) - and; नश्यति (naśyati) - perishes;]
(One ignorant of the right time, very foolish, not knowing the distinctions of tasks, engaged in fruitless actions, perishes after death and here also.)
A person who is ignorant of the right time, very foolish, unaware of distinctions in tasks, and who undertakes fruitless actions, perishes both after death and in this life. (03-159-7)
साहसे वर्तमानानां निकृतीनां दुरात्मनाम्। सर्वसामर्थ्यलिप्सूनां पापो भवति निश्चयः ॥०३-१५९-८॥
sāhase vartamānānāṃ nikṛtīnām durātmanām। sarvasāmarthya-lipsūnāṃ pāpo bhavati niścayaḥ ॥03-159-8॥
[साहसे (sāhase) - in boldness; वर्तमानानां (vartamānānāṃ) - of those abiding; निकृतीनां (nikṛtīnām) - of the wicked; दुरात्मनाम् (durātmanām) - of the evil-minded; सर्वसामर्थ्यलिप्सूनां (sarvasāmarthya-lipsūnām) - of those desiring all power; पापः (pāpaḥ) - sin; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; निश्चयः (niścayaḥ) - certain;]
(In boldness, of those abiding, of the wicked, of the evil-minded, of those desiring all power—sin certainly becomes.)
For those who are bold, wicked, evil-minded, and desire all power, sin is certain. (03-159-8)
अधर्मज्ञोऽवलिप्तश्च बालबुद्धिरमर्षणः। निर्भयो भीमसेनोऽयं तं शाधि पुरुषर्षभ ॥०३-१५९-९॥
adharmajño'valiptaś ca bālabuddhir amarṣaṇaḥ। nirbhayo bhīmaseno'yaṃ taṃ śādhi puruṣarṣabha ॥03-159-9॥
[अधर्मज्ञः (adharmajñaḥ) - one who knows unrighteousness; अवलिप्तः (avaliptaḥ) - arrogant; च (ca) - and; बालबुद्धिः (bālabuddhiḥ) - child-minded; अमर्षणः (amarṣaṇaḥ) - intolerant; निर्भयः (nirbhayaḥ) - fearless; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; अयम् (ayam) - this; तम् (tam) - him; शाधि (śādhi) - restrain; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O best of men;]
(One who knows unrighteousness, arrogant, child-minded, intolerant, fearless Bhīmasena, this (is). Him restrain, O best of men.)
This Bhīmasena, who is acquainted with unrighteousness, arrogant, child-minded, intolerant, and fearless—restrain him, O best of men. (03-159-9)
आर्ष्टिषेणस्य राजर्षेः प्राप्य भूयस्त्वमाश्रमम्। तामिस्रं प्रथमं पक्षं वीतशोकभयो वस ॥०३-१५९-१०॥
ārṣṭiṣeṇasya rājarṣeḥ prāpya bhūyas tvam āśramam। tāmisraṃ prathamaṃ pakṣaṃ vīta-śoka-bhayo vasa॥03-159-10॥
[आर्ष्टिषेणस्य (ārṣṭiṣeṇasya) - of Arṣṭiṣeṇa; राजर्षेः (rājarṣeḥ) - of the royal sage; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; भूयः (bhūyas) - again; त्वम् (tvam) - you; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - hermitage; तामिस्रं (tāmisram) - dark (half); प्रथमं (prathamam) - first; पक्षं (pakṣam) - fortnight; वीतशोकभयः (vīta-śoka-bhayaḥ) - free from grief and fear; वस (vasa) - dwell;]
(Having reached again the hermitage of the royal sage Arṣṭiṣeṇa, you dwell, free from grief and fear, during the first dark fortnight.)
After reaching again the hermitage of the royal sage Arṣṭiṣeṇa, remain there, free from grief and fear, during the first dark fortnight. (03-159-10)
अलकाः सह गन्धर्वैर्यक्षैश्च सह राक्षसैः। मन्नियुक्ता मनुष्येन्द्र सर्वे च गिरिवासिनः ॥ रक्षन्तु त्वा महाबाहो सहितं द्विजसत्तमैः ॥०३-१५९-११॥
alakāḥ saha gandharvair yakṣaiś ca saha rākṣasaiḥ। manniyuktā manuṣyendra sarve ca girivāsinaḥ ॥ rakṣantu tvā mahābāho sahitaṃ dvijasattamaiḥ ॥03-159-11॥
[अलकाः (alakāḥ) - the people of Alakā (a city of Kubera); सह (saha) - with; गन्धर्वैः (gandharvaiḥ) - with the Gandharvas; यक्षैः (yakṣaiḥ) - with the Yakṣas; च (ca) - and; सह (saha) - with; राक्षसैः (rākṣasaiḥ) - with the Rakṣasas; मन्नियुक्ताः (man-niyuktāḥ) - appointed by me; मनुष्येन्द्र (manuṣyendra) - O king of men; सर्वे (sarve) - all; च (ca) - and; गिरिवासिनः (girivāsinaḥ) - those dwelling in the mountains; रक्षन्तु (rakṣantu) - may they protect; त्वा (tvā) - you; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed one; सहितम् (sahitam) - together with; द्विजसत्तमैः (dvijasattamaiḥ) - excellent twice-born (Brahmins);]
(The people of Alakā with the Gandharvas, with the Yakṣas and with the Rakṣasas, all appointed by me, O king of men, and all mountain dwellers—may they protect you, O mighty-armed, together with the excellent twice-born ones.)
O king of men, may the people of Alakā, together with Gandharvas, Yakṣas, Rakṣasas, and all mountain dwellers appointed by me, protect you, O mighty-armed, along with the excellent Brahmins. (03-159-11)
साहसेषु च सन्तिष्ठन्निह शैले वृकोदरः। वार्यतां साध्वयं राजंस्त्वया धर्मभृतां वर ॥०३-१५९-१२॥
sāhaseṣu ca santiṣṭhann iha śaile vṛkodaraḥ। vāryatāṁ sādhv ayaṁ rājaṁs tvayā dharmabhṛtāṁ vara ॥03-159-12॥
[साहसेषु (sāhaseṣu) - in ventures; in risks; च (ca) - and; सन्तिष्ठन् (santiṣṭhan) - standing; being situated; इह (iha) - here; शैले (śaile) - on the mountain; वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Vṛkodara (Bhīma, 'wolf-bellied'); वार्यताम् (vāryatām) - should be restrained; साधु (sādhu) - well; indeed; अयम् (ayam) - this; राजन् (rājan) - O king; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; धर्मभृताम् (dharmabhṛtām) - of upholders of dharma; वर (vara) - best; excellent one;]
(And standing among ventures here on the mountain, Vṛkodara should be restrained, indeed, this, O king, by you, best of upholders of dharma.)
O king, best among upholders of dharma, as Vṛkodara stands here, engaged in ventures on the mountain, he should be restrained by you. (03-159-12)
इतः परं च राजेन्द्र द्रक्ष्यन्ति वनगोचराः। उपस्थास्यन्ति च सदा रक्षिष्यन्ति च सर्वशः ॥०३-१५९-१३॥
itaḥ paraṁ ca rājendra drakṣyanti vanagocarāḥ। upasthāsyanti ca sadā rakṣiṣyanti ca sarvaśaḥ ॥03-159-13॥
[इतः (itaḥ) - from here; परं (param) - further; च (ca) - and; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; द्रक्ष्यन्ति (drakṣyanti) - they will see; वनगोचराः (vanagocarāḥ) - forest-dwellers; उपस्थास्यन्ति (upasthāsyanti) - they will attend; च (ca) - and; सदा (sadā) - always; रक्षिष्यन्ति (rakṣiṣyanti) - they will protect; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in all ways;]
(From here further and O king, the forest-dwellers will see (you), will attend indeed always, and will protect (you) in all ways.)
From this point onward, O king, the forest-dwellers will see you; they will always attend to you and protect you in every way. (03-159-13)
तथैव चान्नपानानि स्वादूनि च बहूनि च। उपस्थास्यन्ति वो गृह्य मत्प्रेष्याः पुरुषर्षभ ॥०३-१५९-१४॥
tathaiva ca annapānāni svādūni ca bahūni ca। upasthāsyanti vo gṛhya matpreṣyāḥ puruṣarṣabha॥03-159-14॥
[तथैव (tatha eva) - in the same way; indeed; च (ca) - and; अन्नपानानि (annapānāni) - food and drinks; स्वादूनि (svādūni) - delicious; च (ca) - and; बहूनि (bahūni) - many; च (ca) - and; उपस्थास्यन्ति (upasthāsyanti) - will be offered; वः (vo) - to you; गृह्य (gṛhya) - in the house; मत्प्रेष्याः (mat-preṣyāḥ) - my attendants; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - O best of men;]
(In the same way and food and drinks delicious and many and will be offered to you in the house by my attendants, O best of men.)
In the same way, my attendants in the house will offer you many delicious kinds of food and drink, O best of men. (03-159-14)
यथा जिष्णुर्महेन्द्रस्य यथा वायोर्वृकोदरः। धर्मस्य त्वं यथा तात योगोत्पन्नो निजः सुतः ॥०३-१५९-१५॥
yathā jiṣṇurmahendrasya yathā vāyorvṛkodaraḥ। dharmasya tvaṃ yathā tāta yogotpanno nijaḥ sutaḥ ॥03-159-15॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; जिष्णुः (jiṣṇuḥ) - the victorious (Arjuna); महेन्द्रस्य (mahendrasya) - of Mahendra (Indra); यथा (yathā) - just as; वायोः (vāyoḥ) - of Vāyu; वृकोदरः (vṛkodaraḥ) - Vṛkodara (Bhīma); धर्मस्य (dharmasya) - of Dharma; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; यथा (yathā) - just as; तात (tāta) - O dear one; योगोत्पन्नः (yogotpannaḥ) - born by union (yoga); निजः (nijaḥ) - own; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son;]
(Just as Jiṣṇu is of Mahendra, just as Vṛkodara is of Vāyu, of Dharma you just as O dear one, born by union, own son.)
Just as Jiṣṇu (Arjuna) is the son of Mahendra (Indra), just as Vṛkodara (Bhīma) is the son of Vāyu, in the same way, O dear one, you are the own son of Dharma, born by union. (03-159-15)
आत्मजावात्मसम्पन्नौ यमौ चोभौ यथाश्विनोः। रक्ष्यास्तद्वन्ममापीह यूयं सर्वे युधिष्ठिर ॥०३-१५९-१६॥
ātmajāv ātma-sampannau yamau ca ubhau yathā aśvinoḥ। rakṣyāḥ tadvat mama api iha yūyam sarve yudhiṣṭhira ॥03-159-16॥
[आत्मजौ (ātmajau) - both sons; आत्मसम्पन्नौ (ātma-sampannau) - possessed of self; यमौ (yamau) - the two Yamas (Yama and his twin); च (ca) - and; उभौ (ubhau) - both; यथा (yathā) - just as; अश्विनोः (aśvinoḥ) - of the Aśvins; रक्ष्याः (rakṣyāḥ) - to be protected; तद्वत् (tadvat) - in that manner; मम (mama) - of mine; अपि (api) - also; इह (iha) - here; यूयम् (yūyam) - you all; सर्वे (sarve) - all; युधिष्ठिर (yudhiṣṭhira) - O Yudhiṣṭhira;]
(Both sons, possessed of self, the two Yamas and both, just as of the Aśvins—to be protected in that manner, of mine also, here, you all, all, O Yudhiṣṭhira.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, just as the two sons possessed of like nature—the twin Ashvins—should be protected, in the same way here you all who are mine must also be protected. (03-159-16)
अर्थतत्त्वविभागज्ञः सर्वधर्मविशेषवित्। भीमसेनादवरजः फल्गुनः कुशली दिवि ॥०३-१५९-१७॥
arthatattvavibhāgajñaḥ sarvadharmaviśeṣavit। bhīmasenādavarajaḥ phalgunaḥ kuśalī divi ॥03-159-17॥
[अर्थतत्त्वविभागज्ञः (arthatattvavibhāgajñaḥ) - knower of the divisions of the principles of meaning; सर्वधर्मविशेषवित् (sarvadharmaviśeṣavit) - knower of all the distinctions of dharma; भीमसेनात् (bhīmasenāt) - from Bhīmasena; अवरजः (avarajaḥ) - younger brother; फल्गुनः (phalgunaḥ) - Phalguna (Arjuna); कुशली (kuśalī) - well, prosperous; दिवि (divi) - in heaven;]
(Knower of the divisions of principles of meaning, knower of all the distinctions of dharma, from Bhīmasena the younger brother, Phalguna, is well in heaven.)
Phalguna, the younger brother of Bhīmasena, who understands the principles of meaning and all the distinctions of dharma, is well in heaven. (03-159-17)
याः काश्चन मता लोकेष्वग्र्याः परमसम्पदः। जन्मप्रभृति ताः सर्वाः स्थितास्तात धनञ्जये ॥०३-१५९-१८॥
yāḥ kāścana matā lokeṣv agryāḥ paramasampadaḥ। janma-prabhṛti tāḥ sarvāḥ sthitās tāta dhanañjaye ॥03-159-18॥
[याः (yāḥ) - which; (feminine plural, relative pronoun); काश्चन (kāścana) - whatsoever; any; (feminine plural); मता (matāḥ) - are considered; esteemed; (feminine plural, past participle); लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in the worlds; among people; (locative plural); अग्र्याः (agryāḥ) - foremost; excellent; (feminine plural); परमसम्पदः (paramasampadaḥ) - supreme wealths; highest prosperities; (feminine plural); जन्मप्रभृति (janma-prabhṛti) - from birth onwards; (indeclinable, compound); ताः (tāḥ) - those; (feminine plural); सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; (feminine plural); स्थिताः (sthitāḥ) - are present; are situated; (feminine plural, past participle); तात (tāta) - O dear one; (vocative singular, affectionate term); धनञ्जये (dhanañjaye) - in Dhanañjaya; in Arjuna; (locative singular, proper noun);]
(Which whatsoever are considered among people the foremost supreme wealths, from birth onwards, those all are present, O dear one, in Dhanañjaya.)
O dear one, all of the supreme wealths considered the foremost by people are present, from birth, in Dhanañjaya (Arjuna). (03-159-18)
दमो दानं बलं बुद्धिर्ह्रीर्धृतिस्तेज उत्तमम्। एतान्यपि महासत्त्वे स्थितान्यमिततेजसि ॥०३-१५९-१९॥
damo dānaṁ balaṁ buddhir hrīr dhṛtis teja uttamam। etāny api mahāsattve sthitāny amitatejasi॥03-159-19॥
[दमः (damaḥ) - restraint; दानम् (dānam) - gift; बलम् (balam) - strength; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; ह्रीः (hrīḥ) - modesty; धृतिः (dhṛtiḥ) - steadfastness; तेजः (tejaḥ) - energy; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - highest; एतानि (etāni) - these; अपि (api) - also; महासत्त्वे (mahāsattve) - in the great-souled; स्थितानि (sthitāni) - abiding; अमिततेजसि (amitatejasi) - in the immeasurable-energied one;]
(Restraint, gift, strength, intellect, modesty, steadfastness, energy, highest—these also in the great-souled, abiding in the immeasurable-energied one.)
Restraint, charity, strength, intellect, modesty, steadfastness, and supreme energy—these qualities are found in you, O great-souled one of immeasurable energy. (03-159-19)
न मोहात्कुरुते जिष्णुः कर्म पाण्डव गर्हितम्। न पार्थस्य मृषोक्तानि कथयन्ति नरा नृषु ॥०३-१५९-२०॥
na mohātkurute jiṣṇuḥ karma pāṇḍava garhitam। na pārthasya mṛṣoktāni kathayanti narā nṛṣu ॥03-159-20॥

(Not from delusion does Jiṣṇu (Arjuna) do blameworthy action, O Pāṇḍava. Not the false words of Partha do men speak among men. (03-159-20))
Jiṣṇu (Arjuna), O Pāṇḍava, does not perform blameworthy actions out of delusion. Men do not speak false things about Partha among people. (03-159-20)
स देवपितृगन्धर्वैः कुरूणां कीर्तिवर्धनः। मानितः कुरुतेऽस्त्राणि शक्रसद्मनि भारत ॥०३-१५९-२१॥
sa devapitṛgandharvaiḥ kurūṇāṃ kīrtivardhanaḥ। mānitaḥ kurute'strāṇi śakrasadmani bhārata ॥03-159-21॥

(Who, that (one), all kings, by righteousness, into subjugation brought; he, Śantanu, of great splendor, of your father, grandfather. Is pleased, O Pārtha, by Pārtha, in heaven, by the wielder of Gāṇḍīva bow. (03-159-22))
The one who brought all kings under control by righteousness, Śantanu of great splendor, your father’s father, O Pārtha, is pleased in heaven by Pārtha, the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow. (03-159-22)
सम्यक्चासौ महावीर्यः कुलधुर्य इव स्थितः। पितॄन्देवांस्तथा विप्रान्पूजयित्वा महायशाः ॥ सप्त मुख्यान्महामेधानाहरद्यमुनां प्रति ॥०३-१५९-२३॥

(Properly and he, of great strength, like the pillar of his lineage, stood. Having worshipped ancestors, gods and likewise Brahmins, the highly renowned performed seven chief great sacrifices towards the Yamunā.)

(Very soon Guḍākesha, well-trained in weapons, best of men, directly created by Maghavan, will obtain Dhanañjaya.)
Very soon, Guḍākesha, the best of men and skillful in arms, directly created by Maghavan (Indra), will achieve his aim, O Dhanañjaya. (03-159-28)
एवमुत्तमकर्माणमनुशिष्य युधिष्ठिरम्। अस्तं गिरिवरश्रेष्ठं प्रययौ गुह्यकाधिपः ॥०३-१५९-२९॥
evamuttamakarmāṇamanuśiṣya yudhiṣṭhiram। astaṃ girivarśreṣṭhaṃ prayayau guhyakādhipaḥ ॥03-159-29॥

(Thus, having instructed Yudhiṣṭhira in excellent deeds, the lord of the Guhyakas departed towards the west, to the best among excellent mountains.)
Thus, after instructing Yudhiṣṭhira in excellent deeds, the lord of the Guhyakas departed westward to the most excellent mountain. (03-159-29)
तं परिस्तोमसङ्कीर्णैर्नानारत्नविभूषितैः। यानैरनुययुर्यक्षा राक्षसाश्च सहस्रशः ॥०३-१५९-३०॥
taṁ paristoma-saṅkīrṇair nānā-ratna-vibhūṣitaiḥ। yānaiḥ anuyayur yakṣāḥ rākṣasāḥ ca sahasraśaḥ ॥03-159-30॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; परिस्तोमसङ्कीर्णैः (paristoma-saṅkīrṇaiḥ) - crowded with festive songs; नानारत्नविभूषितैः (nānā-ratna-vibhūṣitaiḥ) - adorned with various gems; यानैः (yānaiḥ) - by vehicles; अनुययुः (anuyayur) - followed; यक्षा (yakṣāḥ) - Yakṣas; राक्षसाः (rākṣasāḥ) - Rākṣasas; च (ca) - and; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands;]
(Him crowded with festive songs, adorned with various gems, by vehicles followed Yakṣas and Rākṣasas and by thousands.)
Yakṣas and Rākṣasas by the thousands followed him in vehicles adorned with various gems and crowded with festive songs. (03-159-30)
पक्षिणामिव निर्घोषः कुबेरसदनं प्रति। बभूव परमाश्वानामैरावतपथे यताम् ॥०३-१५९-३१॥
pakṣiṇām iva nirghoṣaḥ kuberasadanaṃ prati। babhūva paramāśvānām airāvatapathe yatām ॥03-159-31॥
[पक्षिणामिव (pakṣiṇām iva) - like (the) birds; निर्घोषः (nirghoṣaḥ) - roar; कुबेरसदनं (kuberasadanaṃ) - Kubera's abode; प्रति (prati) - towards; बभूव (babhūva) - arose; परमाश्वानाम् (paramāśvānām) - of the excellent horses; ऐरावतपथे (airāvatapathe) - on the path of Airāvata; यताम् (yatām) - of those restrained;]
(Like the birds, a roar towards Kubera's abode arose, on the path of Airāvata, of the excellent horses, of those restrained.)
A great roar like that of birds arose from the excellent restrained horses on the Airāvata road, as they went towards Kubera's abode. (03-159-31)
ते जग्मुस्तूर्णमाकाशं धनाधिपतिवाजिनः। प्रकर्षन्त इवाभ्राणि पिबन्त इव मारुतम् ॥०३-१५९-३२॥
te jagmustūrṇam ākāśaṃ dhanādhipativājinaḥ। prakarṣanta ivābhrāṇi pibanta iva mārutam॥03-159-32॥
[ते (te) - they; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - (they) went; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; आकाशम् (ākāśam) - into the sky; धनाधिपतिवाजिनः (dhanādhipativājinaḥ) - horses of the lord of wealth (Kubera's steeds); प्रकर्षन्त (prakarṣanta) - dragging; (they) pulling; इव (iva) - as if; अभ्राणि (abhrāṇi) - clouds; पिबन्त (pibanta) - (they) drinking; इव (iva) - as if; मारुतम् (mārutam) - the wind;]
(They went quickly into the sky, the steeds of the lord of wealth, as if dragging the clouds, as if drinking the wind.)
They, the horses of the lord of wealth, swiftly ascended into the sky, seeming to drag the clouds and to drink the wind. (03-159-32)
ततस्तानि शरीराणि गतसत्त्वानि रक्षसाम्। अपाकृष्यन्त शैलाग्राद्धनाधिपतिशासनात् ॥०३-१५९-३३॥
tatas tāni śarīrāṇi gata-sattvāni rakṣasām। apākṛṣyanta śailāgrād dhanādhipati-śāsanāt ॥03-159-33॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तानि (tāni) - those; शरीराणि (śarīrāṇi) - bodies; गतसत्त्वानि (gata-sattvāni) - devoid of life; रक्षसाम् (rakṣasām) - of the Rākṣasas; अपाकृष्यन्त (apākṛṣyanta) - were dragged away; शैलाग्रात् (śailāgrāt) - from the mountain peak; धनाधिपति-शासनात् (dhanādhipati-śāsanāt) - by the order of the lord of wealth (Kubera);]
(Then those bodies devoid of life of the Rākṣasas were dragged away from the mountain peak by the order of the lord of wealth (Kubera).)
Then, by the order of Kubera (the lord of wealth), those lifeless bodies of the Rākṣasas were dragged away from the mountain peak. (03-159-33)
तेषां हि शापकालोऽसौ कृतोऽगस्त्येन धीमता। समरे निहतास्तस्मात्सर्वे मणिमता सह ॥०३-१५९-३४॥
teṣāṁ hi śāpakālo'sau kṛto'gastyena dhīmatā। samare nihatās tasmāt sarve maṇimatā saha ॥03-159-34॥
[तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; हि (hi) - indeed; शापकालः (śāpakālaḥ) - curse-period; असौ (asau) - this; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made; अगस्त्येन (agastyena) - by Agastya; धीमता (dhīmatā) - by the wise; समरे (samare) - in battle; निहताः (nihatāḥ) - slain; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मणिमता (maṇimatā) - with Maṇimat; सह (saha) - together;]
(Of them indeed the curse-period this was made by Agastya by the wise. In battle slain therefore all with Maṇimat together.)
Indeed, this was the period of the curse for them, made by the wise Agastya. Therefore, all of them were slain in battle along with Maṇimat. (3-159-34)
पाण्डवास्तु महात्मानस्तेषु वेश्मसु तां क्षपाम्। सुखमूषुर्गतोद्वेगाः पूजिताः सर्वराक्षसैः ॥०३-१५९-३५॥
pāṇḍavāstu mahātmānas teṣu veśmasu tāṃ kṣapām। sukham ūṣuḥ gatodvegāḥ pūjitāḥ sarva-rākṣasaiḥ ॥03-159-35॥
[पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; तु (tu) - but; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled ones; तेषु (teṣu) - in those; वेश्मसु (veśmasu) - mansions; ताम् (tām) - that; क्षपाम् (kṣapām) - night; सुखम् (sukham) - happily; ऊषुः (ūṣuḥ) - they spent; गत-उद्वेगाः (gata-udvegāḥ) - having dispelled anxiety; पूजिताः (pūjitāḥ) - honored; सर्व-राक्षसैः (sarva-rākṣasaiḥ) - by all the rākṣasas (demons);]
(The Pāṇḍavas, but, great-souled ones, in those mansions, that night, happily, spent, having dispelled anxiety, honored by all the rākṣasas.)
But the great-souled Pāṇḍavas spent that night happily in those mansions, their anxieties dispelled, honored by all the rākṣasas. (03-159-35)
