इन्द्रवैश्रवणावेतां दिशं पाण्डव रक्षतः। पर्वतैश्च वनान्तैश्च काननैश्चोपशोभिताम् ॥०३-१६०-५॥

Dear one, the wise say that this is the abode of Mahendra, of the king, of Vaiśravaṇa, and of the seers who know all dharmas. (03-160-6)
अतश्चोद्यन्तमादित्यमुपतिष्ठन्ति वै प्रजाः। ऋषयश्चापि धर्मज्ञाः सिद्धाः साध्याश्च देवताः ॥०३-१६०-७॥
ataś cod yantam ādityam upatiṣṭhanti vai prajāḥ। ṛṣayaś cāpi dharmajñāḥ siddhāḥ sādhyāś ca devatāḥ॥03-160-7॥

(From this and the rising Sun the creatures indeed worship; sages and also knowers of dharma, perfected beings, sādhyas and divinities.)
Therefore, all creatures indeed worship the rising Sun; sages, knowers of dharma, perfected beings, sādhyas, and the gods also do so. (03-160-7)
यमस्तु राजा धर्मात्मा सर्वप्राणभृतां प्रभुः। प्रेतसत्त्वगतीमेतां दक्षिणामाश्रितो दिशम् ॥०३-१६०-८॥
yamastu rājā dharmātmā sarvaprāṇabhṛtāṃ prabhuḥ। pretasattvagatīmetāṃ dakṣiṇāmāśrito diśam ॥03-160-8॥

(But Yama, the king, righteous-souled, lord of all beings possessing life, having resorted to this path of departed spirits, the southern direction.)

यं प्राप्य सविता राजन्सत्येन प्रतितिष्ठति। अस्तं पर्वतराजानमेतमाहुर्मनीषिणः ॥०३-१६०-१०॥
yaṃ prāpya savitā rājan satyena pratitiṣṭhati। astaṃ parvatarājānam etam āhur manīṣiṇaḥ ॥03-160-10॥

(Whom, having reached, the sun, O king, through truth abides. The setting king of mountains, this, they say, the wise ones.)

एतं पर्वतराजानं समुद्रं च महोदधिम्। आवसन्वरुणो राजा भूतानि परिरक्षति ॥०३-१६०-११॥

(Illuminating the northern direction, this renowned, the great Meru, most fortunate, auspicious, is the goal of the knowers of Brahman.)

यस्मिन्ब्रह्मसदश्चैव तिष्ठते च प्रजापतिः। भूतात्मा विसृजन्सर्वं यत्किञ्चिज्जङ्गमागमम् ॥०३-१६०-१३॥
yasmin brahma-sadaś caiva tiṣṭhate ca prajā-patiḥ। bhūta-ātmā visṛjan sarvaṃ yat kiñcit jaṅgama-agamam ॥03-160-13॥

यानाहुर्ब्रह्मणः पुत्रान्मानसान्दक्षसप्तमान्। तेषामपि महामेरुः स्थानं शिवमनामयम् ॥०३-१६०-१४॥
yān āhur brahmaṇaḥ putrān mānasān dakṣa-saptamān। teṣām api mahāmeruḥ sthānaṃ śivam anāmayam॥03-160-14॥

तद्वै ज्योतींषि सर्वाणि प्राप्य भासन्ति नोऽपि च। स्वयं विभुरदीनात्मा तत्र ह्यभिविराजते ॥०३-१६०-२०॥
tad vai jyotīṃṣi sarvāṇi prāpya bhāsanti no'pi ca। svayaṃ vibhuradīnātmā tatra hy abhivirājate ॥03-160-20॥

(That indeed, all lights having obtained, shine; surely, indeed, and even by itself, the all-pervading, undepressed self there indeed shines forth.)
That indeed is what all lights receive their brilliance from and shine; but even so, by itself, the all-pervading, undepressed Self alone shines forth there. (03-160-20)
यतयस्तत्र गच्छन्ति भक्त्या नारायणं हरिम्। परेण तपसा युक्ता भाविताः कर्मभिः शुभैः ॥०३-१६०-२१॥
yatayas tatra gacchanti bhaktyā nārāyaṇaṃ harim। pareṇa tapasā yuktā bhāvitāḥ karmabhiḥ śubhaiḥ॥03-160-21॥

(Ascetics there go with devotion to Nārāyaṇa Hari, endowed with supreme austerity, purified by auspicious actions.)
The ascetics, endowed with supreme austerity and purified by auspicious deeds, go there to Nārāyaṇa Hari with devotion. (03-160-21)
योगसिद्धा महात्मानस्तमोमोहविवर्जिताः। तत्र गत्वा पुनर्नेमं लोकमायान्ति भारत ॥०३-१६०-२२॥
yogasiddhā mahātmānas tamomohavivarjitāḥ। tatra gatvā punar nemaṁ lokam āyānti bhārata॥03-160-22॥

(Perfected in yoga, great-souled ones, devoid of darkness and delusion, there having gone, again not this world come, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, those perfected in yoga, the great-souled ones devoid of darkness and delusion, having gone there, do not return to this world. (03-160-22)
स्थानमेतन्महाभाग ध्रुवमक्षयमव्ययम्। ईश्वरस्य सदा ह्येतत्प्रणमात्र युधिष्ठिर ॥०३-१६०-२३॥
sthānam etan mahābhāga dhruvam akṣayam avyayam। īśvarasya sadā hy etat praṇamātra yudhiṣṭhira॥03-160-23॥

(Place this, O greatly fortunate one, eternal, imperishable, unchanging. Of the Lord always indeed this by (your) salutation, Yudhiṣṭhira.)
This place, O greatly fortunate Yudhiṣṭhira, is eternal, imperishable, and unchanging; it always belongs to the Lord, and (is attained) merely by your salutation. (03-160-23)
एतं ज्योतींषि सर्वाणि प्रकर्षन्भगवानपि। कुरुते वितमस्कर्मा आदित्योऽभिप्रदक्षिणम् ॥०३-१६०-२४॥
etaṃ jyotīṃṣi sarvāṇi prakarṣan bhagavān api। kurute vitamas-karmā ādityaḥ abhi-pradakṣiṇam ॥03-160-24॥

(This all lights drawing forth the Lord also does, whose action is to remove darkness, the Sun makes circumambulation.)
The Sun, the Lord, who dispels all darkness, draws forth all these lights and makes a sacred circumambulation as well. (3-160-24)
अस्तं प्राप्य ततः सन्ध्यामतिक्रम्य दिवाकरः। उदीचीं भजते काष्ठां दिशमेष विभावसुः ॥०३-१६०-२५॥
astaṃ prāpya tataḥ sandhyām-atikramya divākaraḥ। udīcīṃ bhajate kāṣṭhāṃ diśam-eṣa vibhāvasuḥ ॥03-160-25॥
[अस्तं (astaṃ) - the setting (west); प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; ततः (tataḥ) - then; from there; सन्ध्याम् (sandhyām) - twilight; evening; अतिक्रम्य (atikramya) - having passed over; having crossed; दिवाकरः (divākaraḥ) - the sun; उदीचीम् (udīcīm) - northern; भजते (bhajate) - resorts to; turns to; काष्ठाम् (kāṣṭhām) - direction; region; दिशम् (diśam) - direction; एष (eṣa) - this; विभावसुः (vibhāvasuḥ) - fire; here: shining one, the sun;]
(Having reached the setting (west), then, having passed over the twilight, the sun, this shining one, turns to the northern direction.)
After reaching the west and passing over the evening, the sun—the shining one—turns toward the northern direction. (03-160-25)
स मेरुमनुवृत्तः सन्पुनर्गच्छति पाण्डव। प्राङ्मुखः सविता देवः सर्वभूतहिते रतः ॥०३-१६०-२६॥
sa merum-anuvṛttaḥ san punaḥ gacchati pāṇḍava। prāṅ-mukhaḥ savitā devaḥ sarva-bhūta-hite rataḥ ॥03-160-26॥
[स (sa) - he; मेरुम्-अनुवृत्तः (merum-anuvṛttaḥ) - Meru-following; सन् (san) - being; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava; प्राङ्मुखः (prāṅ-mukhaḥ) - with face towards the east; सविता (savitā) - the Sun; देवः (devaḥ) - god; सर्वभूतहिते (sarva-bhūta-hite) - in the welfare of all beings; रतः (rataḥ) - engaged;]
(He, being Meru-following, again goes, O Pāṇḍava. With face toward the east, the god Savitṛ is engaged in the welfare of all beings.)
He, following the path of Mount Meru, again moves forward, O Pāṇḍava. Facing east, the god Savitṛ is devoted to the welfare of all beings. (03-160-26)
स मासं विभजन्कालं बहुधा पर्वसन्धिषु। तथैव भगवान्सोमो नक्षत्रैः सह गच्छति ॥०३-१६०-२७॥
sa māsaṃ vibhajan kālaṃ bahudhā parvasandhiṣu. tathaiva bhagavān somo nakṣatraiḥ saha gacchati ॥03-160-27॥
[स (sa) - he; मासं (māsaṃ) - month; विभजन् (vibhajan) - dividing; कालं (kālaṃ) - time; बहुधा (bahudhā) - in many ways; पर्वसन्धिषु (parvasandhiṣu) - at the junctures of lunar days; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the blessed; सोमः (somaḥ) - Soma (the Moon); नक्षत्रैः (nakṣatraiḥ) - with stars; सह (saha) - with; गच्छति (gacchati) - moves;]
(He, dividing the month, the time, in many ways, at the junctures of lunar days. In the same way, the blessed Soma moves together with the stars.)

(Thus he, having circled Mount Meru unwearied, causing all beings to prosper, again goes to Mandara.)
Thus, after circling Mount Meru tirelessly and fostering all beings, he again returns to Mandara. (03-160-28)
तथा तमिस्रहा देवो मयूखैर्भावयञ्जगत्। मार्गमेतदसम्बाधमादित्यः परिवर्तते ॥०३-१६०-२९॥
tathā tamisrahā devo mayūkhair bhāvayan jagat। mārgam etad asambādham ādityaḥ parivartate ॥03-160-29॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; in this way; तमिस्रहा (tamīsrahā) - destroyer of darkness; remover of darkness; देवः (devaḥ) - god; divine being; मयूखैः (mayūkhaiḥ) - with rays; with beams; भावयन् (bhāvayan) - illuminating; causing to shine; जगत् (jagat) - the world; universe; मार्गम् (mārgam) - the path; एतत् (etat) - this; असम्बाधम् (asambādham) - unobstructed; unimpeded; आदित्यः (ādityaḥ) - the Sun; Aditya; परिवर्तते (parivartate) - moves; revolves;]
(Thus, the destroyer of darkness god, with beams illuminating the world, the Sun moves on this unobstructed path.)
Thus, the Sun, the god who destroys darkness, illumining the world with his rays, travels along this unobstructed path. (03-160-29)
सिसृक्षुः शिशिराण्येष दक्षिणां भजते दिशम्। ततः सर्वाणि भूतानि कालः शिशिरमृच्छति ॥०३-१६०-३०॥
sisṛkṣuḥ śiśirāṇyeṣa dakṣiṇāṃ bhajate diśam। tataḥ sarvāṇi bhūtāni kālaḥ śiśiramṛcchati॥03-160-30॥
[सिसृक्षुः (sisṛkṣuḥ) - desiring to bring forth; शिशिराणि (śiśirāṇi) - cold seasons; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this (he); दक्षिणाम् (dakṣiṇām) - southern; भजते (bhajate) - resorts to; दिशम् (diśam) - direction; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - creatures; कालः (kālaḥ) - Time; शिशिरम् (śiśiram) - cold season; ऋच्छति (ṛcchati) - attains;]
(Desiring to bring forth the cold seasons, this (Time) resorts to the southern direction. Then all creatures, Time attains (leads into) the cold season.)

[स्थावराणां (sthāvarāṇām) - of immovable (beings); च (ca) - and; भूतानां (bhūtānām) - of beings; जङ्गमानां (jaṅgamānām) - of movable (beings); च (ca) - and; तेजसा (tejasā) - with brilliance; तेजांसि (tejāṃsi) - the shines (energies); समुपादत्ते (samupādatte) - completely takes up; निवृत्तः (nivṛttaḥ) - withdrawn; सन्विभावसुः (san vibhāvasuḥ) - being Vibhavasu (Fire);]
(Of the immovable and of beings and of movable (beings) and with brilliance, the shines (energies) completely takes up, withdrawn, being Vibhavasu (Fire).)
The fire, being withdrawn, completely absorbs the energies of both immovable and movable beings along with their brilliance. (03-160-31)
ततः स्वेदः क्लमस्तन्द्री ग्लानिश्च भजते नरान्। प्राणिभिः सततं स्वप्नो ह्यभीक्ष्णं च निषेव्यते ॥०३-१६०-३२॥
tataḥ svedaḥ klamastandrī glāniśca bhajate narān। prāṇibhiḥ satataṁ svapno hyabhīkṣṇaṁ ca niṣevyate॥03-160-32॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; after that; स्वेदः (svedaḥ) - sweat; क्लमः (klamaḥ) - fatigue; तन्द्री (tandrī) - lassitude; ग्लानिः (glāniḥ) - weakness; च (ca) - and; भजते (bhajate) - afflicts; (they) partake; नरान् (narān) - men; प्राणिभिः (prāṇibhiḥ) - by living beings; सततं (satataṁ) - always; constantly; स्वप्नः (svapnaḥ) - sleep; हि (hi) - indeed; अभीक्ष्णं (abhīkṣṇam) - repeatedly; frequently; च (ca) - and; निषेव्यते (niṣevyate) - is indulged; is experienced;]
(Then sweat, fatigue, lassitude, and weakness afflict men. By living beings, sleep is indeed always and frequently indulged.)
After that, sweat, fatigue, lassitude, and weakness affect men. Among living beings, sleep is always and repeatedly experienced. (03-160-32)
एवमेतदनिर्देश्यं मार्गमावृत्य भानुमान्। पुनः सृजति वर्षाणि भगवान्भावयन्प्रजाः ॥०३-१६०-३३॥
evam etad anirdeśyaṃ mārgam āvṛtya bhānumān। punaḥ sṛjati varṣāṇi bhagavān bhāvayan prajāḥ॥03-160-33॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; अनिर्देश्यं (anirdeśyaṃ) - indescribable; मार्गम् (mārgam) - path; आवृत्य (āvṛtya) - having covered; भानुमान् (bhānumān) - the Sun; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; सृजति (sṛjati) - produces; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - rains; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; भावयन् (bhāvayan) - nourishing; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - beings;]
(Thus, this (indescribable) path having been covered, the Sun again produces rains, the Lord nourishing the beings.)
Thus, having covered this indescribable path, the Sun, the Lord, again produces rains, nourishing the creatures. (03-160-33)
वृष्टिमारुतसन्तापैः सुखैः स्थावरजङ्गमान्। वर्धयन्सुमहातेजाः पुनः प्रतिनिवर्तते ॥०३-१६०-३४॥
vṛṣṭi-māruta-santāpaiḥ sukhaiḥ sthāvara-jaṅgamān। vardhayan su-mahā-tejāḥ punaḥ pratinivartate ॥03-160-34॥
[वृष्टि (vṛṣṭi) - by rain; by shower; by rainwater; मारुत (māruta) - by wind; by air; सन्तापैः (santāpaiḥ) - by heats; by burning; by warmth; सुखैः (sukhaiḥ) - by comforts; by pleasures; स्थावरजङ्गमान् (sthāvara-jaṅgamān) - the immobile and the mobile (beings); plants and animals; वर्धयन् (vardhayan) - causing to grow; nourishing; सुमहातेजाः (su-mahā-tejāḥ) - of exceedingly great brilliance; of very great energy; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; प्रतिनिवर्तते (pratinivartate) - returns; goes back;]
(By rain, wind, heats, comforts, the immobile and the mobile (beings), causing to grow, one of exceedingly great brilliance again returns.)
He, of exceedingly great brilliance, having nourished the immobile and the mobile beings with rain, wind, heat and comfort, returns again. (03-160-34)
एवमेष चरन्पार्थ कालचक्रमतन्द्रितः। प्रकर्षन्सर्वभूतानि सविता परिवर्तते ॥०३-१६०-३५॥
evam eṣa caraṇ pārtha kālacakram atandritaḥ। prakarṣan sarvabhūtāni savitā parivartate॥03-160-35॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; चरन् (caran) - moving; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; कालचक्रम् (kālacakram) - the wheel of time; अतन्द्रितः (atandritaḥ) - untiring; प्रकर्षन् (prakarṣan) - carrying along; सर्वभूतानि (sarvabhūtāni) - all beings; सविता (savitā) - the Sun; परिवर्तते (parivartate) - revolves;]
(Thus this, moving, O Pārtha, the wheel of time, untiring, carrying along all beings, the Sun revolves.)
Thus, O Pārtha, this Sun, moving untiringly and carrying along all beings, revolves the wheel of time. (03-160-35)
सन्तता गतिरेतस्य नैष तिष्ठति पाण्डव। आदायैव तु भूतानां तेजो विसृजते पुनः ॥०३-१६०-३६॥
santatā gatir etasya naiṣa tiṣṭhati pāṇḍava। ādāyaiva tu bhūtānāṃ tejo visṛjate punaḥ ॥03-160-36॥
[सन्तता (santatā) - continuousness; continuity; गतिः (gatiḥ) - motion; movement; एतस्य (etasya) - of this; of him; न (na) - not; एषः (eṣaḥ) - he; this one; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - stands; remains; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; एव (eva) - indeed; just; तु (tu) - but; however; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; तेजः (tejaḥ) - splendor; energy; विसृजते (visṛjate) - emits; sends forth; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Continuous motion of this, not he stands, O Pāṇḍava. Having taken indeed but of beings the energy, he emits again.)
O Pāṇḍava, the movement of this (entity) is constant; it never stands still. Having taken the energy of beings, it again emits it. (03-160-36)
विभजन्सर्वभूतानामायुः कर्म च भारत। अहोरात्रान्कलाः काष्ठाः सृजत्येष सदा विभुः ॥०३-१६०-३७॥
vibhajan sarvabhūtānām āyuḥ karma ca bhārata। ahorātrān kalāḥ kāṣṭhāḥ sṛjati eṣaḥ sadā vibhuḥ॥03-160-37॥
