तस्मिन्नगेन्द्रे वसतां तु तेषां; महात्मनां सद्व्रतमास्थितानाम्। रतिः प्रमोदश्च बभूव तेषा; माकाङ्क्षतां दर्शनमर्जुनस्य ॥०३-१६१-१॥
tasmin nagendre vasatāṃ tu teṣām; mahātmanāṃ sadvratamāsthitānām. ratiḥ pramodaś ca babhūva teṣām; mā kāṅkṣatāṃ darśanam arjunasya ॥03-161-1॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; नगेन्द्रे (nagendre) - king of mountains; वसताम् (vasatām) - dwelling (of those); तु (tu) - but; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; महात्मनाम् (mahātmanām) - of the great-souled; सद्व्रतम् (sadvratam) - good vow; आस्थितानाम् (āsthitānām) - undertaken (by); रतिः (ratiḥ) - delight; प्रमोदः (pramodaḥ) - joy; च (ca) - and; बभूव (babhūva) - arose; तेषाम् (teṣām) - among them; मा (mā) - do not; अाकाङ्क्षताम् (ākāṅkṣatām) - those desiring; दर्शनम् (darśanam) - sight; अर्जुनस्य (arjunasya) - of Arjuna;]
(In that king of mountains, while dwelling of them but, of the great-souled, having undertaken good vow, delight and joy also arose among them; do not, of those desiring the sight of Arjuna.)
While they, the great-souled who had undertaken good vows, were dwelling on that king of mountains, delight and joy arose among them; but those desiring to see Arjuna did not (feel so). (03-161-1)
तान्वीर्ययुक्तान्सुविशुद्धसत्त्वां; स्तेजस्विनः सत्यधृतिप्रधानान्। सम्प्रीयमाणा बहवोऽभिजग्मु; र्गन्धर्वसङ्घाश्च महर्षयश्च ॥०३-१६१-२॥
tān vīryayuktān suviśuddhasattvān; tejasvinaḥ satyadhṛtipradhānān. samprīyamāṇā bahavo'bhijagmuḥ; gandharvasaṅghāś ca maharṣayaś ca ॥03-161-2॥
[तान् (tān) - them; वीर्ययुक्तान् (vīryayuktān) - endowed with strength; सुविशुद्धसत्त्वान् (suviśuddhasattvān) - of very pure mind; तेजस्विनः (tejasvinaḥ) - radiant ones; सत्यधृतिप्रधानान् (satyadhṛtipradhānān) - chiefly steadfast in truth; सम्प्रीयमाणा (samprīyamāṇā) - being pleased; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; अभिजग्मुः (abhijagmuḥ) - approached; गन्धर्वसङ्घाः (gandharvasaṅghāḥ) - assemblies of Gandharvas; च (ca) - and; महर्षयः (maharṣayaḥ) - great sages; च (ca) - and;]
(Them endowed with strength, of very pure mind, radiant ones, chiefly steadfast in truth; being pleased, many approached—assemblies of Gandharvas and great sages and.)
Many, being pleased, approached them—those radiant ones endowed with strength, of very pure mind, chiefly steadfast in truth—among them were assemblies of Gandharvas and great sages. (3-161-2)
तं पादपैः पुष्पधरैरुपेतं; नगोत्तमं प्राप्य महारथानाम्। मनःप्रसादः परमो बभूव; यथा दिवं प्राप्य मरुद्गणानाम् ॥०३-१६१-३॥
taṁ pādapaiḥ puṣpadharair upetaṁ; nagottamaṁ prāpya mahārathānām। manaḥprasādaḥ paramo babhūva; yathā divaṁ prāpya marudgaṇānām ॥03-161-3॥
[तं (taṁ) - him/that; पादपैः (pādapaiḥ) - by trees; पुष्पधरैः (puṣpadharaiḥ) - bearing flowers; उपेतं (upetaṁ) - endowed; नगोत्तमं (nagottamaṁ) - the best of mountains; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; महारथानाम् (mahārathānām) - of great warriors; मनःप्रसादः (manaḥprasādaḥ) - joy of mind; परमः (paramaḥ) - supreme; बभूव (babhūva) - became; यथा (yathā) - just as; दिवं (divaṁ) - heaven; प्राप्य (prāpya) - on reaching; मरुद्गणानाम् (marudgaṇānām) - of the hosts of Maruts;]
(That, by trees bearing flowers endowed, best of mountains having reached of great warriors, joy of mind supreme became; just as heaven having reached of the hosts of Maruts.)
After reaching that best of mountains, endowed with flowering trees, the minds of the great warriors experienced supreme joy, just as the hosts of Maruts do on reaching heaven. (03-161-3)
मयूरहंसस्वननादितानि; पुष्पोपकीर्णानि महाचलस्य। शृङ्गाणि सानूनि च पश्यमाना; गिरेः परं हर्षमवाप्य तस्थुः ॥०३-१६१-४॥
mayūra-haṃsa-svana-nāditāni; puṣpa-upakīrṇāni mahācalasya. śṛṅgāṇi sānūni ca paśyamānā; gireḥ paraṃ harṣam avāpya tasthuḥ ॥03-161-4॥
[मयूरहंसस्वननादितानि (mayūra-haṃsa-svana-nāditāni) - resounded with the cries of peacocks and swans; पुष्पोपकीर्णानि (puṣpa-upakīrṇāni) - strewn with flowers; महाचलस्य (mahācālasya) - of the great mountain; शृङ्गाणि (śṛṅgāṇi) - peaks; सानूनि (sānūni) - summits; च (ca) - and; पश्यमाना (paśyamānā) - seeing; गिरेः (gireḥ) - of the mountain; परं (paraṃ) - supreme; हर्षमवाप्य (harṣam avāpya) - having attained joy; तस्थुः (tasthuḥ) - they stood;]
(The peaks resounded with the cries of peacocks and swans; strewn with flowers of the great mountain, the peaks and summits, seeing the mountain, having attained supreme joy, they stood.)

साक्षात्कुबेरेण कृताश्च तस्मि; न्नगोत्तमे संवृतकूलरोधसः। कादम्बकारण्डवहंसजुष्टाः; पद्माकुलाः पुष्करिणीरपश्यन् ॥०३-१६१-५॥
sākṣātkubereṇa kṛtāś ca tasmi; nnagottame saṁvṛtakūlarodhasaḥ. kādambakāraṇḍavahaṁsajuṣṭāḥ; padmākulāḥ puṣkariṇīr apaśyan ॥03-161-5॥
[साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - in person; directly; कुबेरेण (kubereṇa) - by Kubera; कृताः (kṛtāḥ) - made; च (ca) - and; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; नगोत्‍तमे (nagottame) - excellent mountain; संवृत (saṁvṛta) - enclosed; कूलरोधसः (kūlarodhasaḥ) - by banks; कादम्ब (kādamba) - by kādamba (tree); कारण्डव (kāraṇḍava) - by kāraṇḍava (duck); हंस (haṁsa) - by swan; जुष्टाः (juṣṭāḥ) - enjoyed by; पद्माकुलाः (padmākulāḥ) - filled with lotuses; पुष्करिणीः (puṣkariṇīḥ) - lakes; अपश्यन् (apaśyan) - they saw;]
(Directly by Kubera made and in that excellent mountain, enclosed by banks, by kādamba trees, kāraṇḍava ducks, and swans enjoyed, filled with lotuses, lakes they saw.)

क्रीडाप्रदेशांश्च समृद्धरूपा; न्सुचित्रमाल्यावृतजातशोभान्। मणिप्रवेकान्सुमनोहरांश्च; यथा भवेयुर्धनदस्य राज्ञः ॥०३-१६१-६॥
krīḍāpradeśāṃś ca samṛddharūpān sucitramālyāvṛtajātaśobhān maṇipravekān sumanoharāṃś ca yathā bhaveyur dhanadasya rājñaḥ ॥03-161-6॥
[क्रीडाप्रदेशान् (krīḍāpradeśān) - pleasure-grounds; च (ca) - and; समृद्धरूपान् (samṛddharūpān) - abundantly formed; सुचित्रमाल्यावृतजातशोभान् (sucitramālyāvṛtajātaśobhān) - wrapped by beautiful garlands, of innate splendor; मणिप्रवेयान् (maṇipravekān) - precious-gems; सुमनोहरान् (sumanoharān) - very delightful; च (ca) - and; यथा (yathā) - as; भवेयुः (bhaveyuḥ) - would be; धनदस्य (dhanadasya) - of Dhanada (Kubera); राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - king;]
(Pleasure-grounds and abundantly formed, enveloped in beautiful garlands of innate splendor; precious gems very delightful and as might be of Dhanada, king, would be.)
Pleasure-grounds that are splendid and richly adorned, beautifully garlanded and inherently resplendent; delightful precious gems, just as would be found with King Dhanada (Kubera). (03-161-6)
अनेकवर्णैश्च सुगन्धिभिश्च; महाद्रुमैः सन्ततमभ्रमालिभिः। तपःप्रधानाः सततं चरन्तः; शृङ्गं गिरेश्चिन्तयितुं न शेकुः ॥०३-१६१-७॥
anekavarṇaiś ca sugandhibhiś ca; mahādrumaiḥ santatam-abhramālibhiḥ. tapaḥ-pradhānāḥ satataṃ carantaḥ; śṛṅgaṃ gireḥ cintayituṃ na śekuḥ ॥03-161-7॥
[अनेकवर्णैः (anekavarṇaiḥ) - with many colors; च (ca) - and; सुगन्धिभिः (sugandhibhiḥ) - with fragrant ones; च (ca) - and; महाद्रुमैः (mahādrumaiḥ) - with great trees; सन्ततम् (santatam) - constantly; अभ्रमालिभिः (abhramālibhiḥ) - with garlands of clouds; तपःप्रधानाः (tapaḥ-pradhānāḥ) - those who have austerity as the chief thing; सततम् (satatam) - always; चरन्तः (carantaḥ) - wandering; शृङ्गम् (śṛṅgam) - summit; गिरेः (gireḥ) - of the mountain; चिन्तयितुम् (cintayitum) - to contemplate; न (na) - not; शेकुः (śekuḥ) - were able;]
(With many colors and with fragrant (things), and with great trees constantly (adorned) with garlands of clouds, those whose chief practice was austerity, always wandering, were not able to contemplate the summit of the mountain.)
Those ascetics, devoted to austerity and always wandering amidst many-colored, fragrant, great trees ever wreathed in cloud garlands, were unable to even contemplate the mountain's summit. (03-161-7)
स्वतेजसा तस्य नगोत्तमस्य; महौषधीनां च तथा प्रभावात्। विभक्तभावो न बभूव कश्चि; दहर्निशानां पुरुषप्रवीर ॥०३-१६१-८॥
svatejasā tasya nagottamasya; mahauṣadhīnāṃ ca tathā prabhāvāt. vibhaktabhāvo na babhūva kaści; daharniśānāṃ puruṣapravīra ॥03-161-8॥
[स्वतेजसा (svatejasā) - by his own brilliance; तस्य (tasya) - of him; नगोत्तमस्य (nagottamasya) - of the best of mountains; महौषधीनां (mahauṣadhīnāṃ) - of great herbs; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - likewise; प्रभावात् (prabhāvāt) - from the power; विभक्तभावः (vibhaktabhāvaḥ) - separate state; न (na) - not; बभूव (babhūva) - was; कश्चित् (kaścit) - any; दहर्निशानाम् (daharniśānām) - of days and nights; पुरुषप्रवीर (puruṣapravīra) - O foremost of men;]
(By his own brilliance, of him, of the best of mountains; and of great herbs likewise from the power. A separate state was not for any, of days and nights, O foremost of men.)
O foremost of men, by the brilliance of that best of mountains and likewise by the power of the great herbs, there was no distinction between day and night for anyone. (03-161-8)
यमास्थितः स्थावरजङ्गमानि; विभावसुर्भावयतेऽमितौजाः। तस्योदयं चास्तमयं च वीरा; स्तत्र स्थितास्ते ददृशुर्नृसिंहाः ॥०३-१६१-९॥
yamāsthitaḥ sthāvarajaṅgamāni; vibhāvasurbhāvayate’mitaujāḥ. tasyodayaṃ cāstamayaṃ ca vīrā; statra sthitāste dadṛśurnṛsiṃhāḥ ॥03-161-9॥
[यमास्थितः (yamāsthitaḥ) - having occupied Yama (setting position); स्थावरजङ्गमानि (sthāvarajaṅgamāni) - immobile and mobile beings; विभावसुः (vibhāvasuḥ) - Agni (fire); भावयते (bhāvayate) - causes to exist; अमितौजाः (amitaujāḥ) - of immeasurable energy; तस्य (tasya) - his; उदयं (udayaṃ) - rising; च (ca) - and; अस्तमयं (astamayaṃ) - setting; च (ca) - and; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; सत्र (statra) - there; स्थिताः (sthitāḥ) - standing; ते (te) - they; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - saw; नृसिंहाः (nṛsiṃhāḥ) - human-lions (heroes, warriors);]
(Having occupied Yama (the setting position), the immobile and mobile beings, Agni of immeasurable energy causes to exist. His rising and his setting, the heroes—there standing—they saw, the human-lions (warriors).)
Occupied at Yama's point (the west), Agni of boundless energy causes to exist all the immobile and mobile beings. The heroes standing there, the lion-hearted men, saw his rising and his setting. (03-161-9)
रवेस्तमिस्रागमनिर्गमांस्ते; तथोदयं चास्तमयं च वीराः। समावृताः प्रेक्ष्य तमोनुदस्य; गभस्तिजालैः प्रदिशो दिशश्च ॥०३-१६१-१०॥
ravestamisrāgamaniro gamām̐ste; tathodayaṃ cāstamayaṃ ca vīrāḥ. samāvṛtāḥ prekṣya tamonudasya; gabhastijālaiḥ pradiśo diśaśca ॥03-161-10॥
[रवֶः (raveḥ) - of the sun; तमिस्रागम-निर्गमांश् (tamisrāgama-nirgamān) - (of) darkness arrival-departures; ते (te) - those; तथा (tathā) - likewise; उदयम् (udayam) - rising; च (ca) - and; अस्तमयम् (astamayam) - setting; च (ca) - and; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; समावृताः (samāvṛtāḥ) - surrounded; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - seeing; तमोनुदस्य (tamonudasya) - of the dispeller-of-darkness; गभस्तिजालैः (gabhastijālaiḥ) - by the networks-of-rays; प्रदिशः (pradiśaḥ) - the regions; दिशः (diśaḥ) - the directions; च (ca) - and;]
(Of the sun, (the) arrivals and departures of darkness those, likewise (the) rising and setting and heroes, surrounded seeing of the dispeller-of-darkness by the networks of rays the regions, the directions, and.)
The heroes, having seen the regions and directions enveloped by the networks of rays of the sun, the dispeller of darkness, marked the arrivals and departures of darkness, and likewise its rising and setting. (03-161-10)
स्वाध्यायवन्तः सततक्रियाश्च; धर्मप्रधानाश्च शुचिव्रताश्च। सत्ये स्थितास्तस्य महारथस्य; सत्यव्रतस्यागमनप्रतीक्षाः ॥०३-१६१-११॥
svādhyāyavantaḥ satatakriyāś ca; dharmapradhānāś ca śucivratāś ca. satye sthitās tasya mahārathasya; satyavratasyāgamanapratīkṣāḥ ॥03-161-11॥
[स्वाध्यायवन्तः (svādhyāyavantaḥ) - possessed of self-study; सततक्रियाः (satatakriyāḥ) - having constant acts; च (ca) - and; धर्मप्रधानाः (dharmapradhānāḥ) - having righteousness as chief; च (ca) - and; शुचिव्रताः (śucivratāḥ) - of pure vows; च (ca) - and; सत्ये (satye) - in truth; स्थिताः (sthitāḥ) - standing; तस्य (tasya) - of him; महारथस्य (mahārathasya) - of the great charioteer; सत्यव्रतस्य (satyavratasya) - of Satyavrata; आगमनप्रतीक्षाः (āgamanapratīkṣāḥ) - awaiting the coming;]
(Possessed of self-study, having constant acts, and having righteousness as chief, and of pure vows; standing in truth of him, the great charioteer, of Satyavrata, awaiting the coming.)
They who are devoted to self-study, always engaged in pious acts, chief in righteousness, pure in vow, firm in truthfulness, were awaiting the arrival of that great warrior, Satyavrata. (03-161-11)
इहैव हर्षोऽस्तु समागतानां; क्षिप्रं कृतास्त्रेण धनञ्जयेन। इति ब्रुवन्तः परमाशिषस्ते; पार्थास्तपोयोगपरा बभूवुः ॥०३-१६१-१२॥
ihaiva harṣo'stu samāgatānāṃ; kṣipraṃ kṛtāstreṇa dhanañjayena. iti bruvantaḥ paramāśiṣaste; pārthāstapoyogaparā babhūvuḥ ॥03-161-12॥
[इहैव (ihaiva) - here itself; हर्षः (harṣaḥ) - joy; अस्तु (astu) - let there be; समागतानाम् (samāgatānām) - of the assembled; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; कृतास्त्रेण (kṛtāstreṇa) - by one who has acquired weapons; धनञ्जयेन (dhanañjayena) - by Dhanañjaya; इति (iti) - thus; ब्रुवन्तः (bruvantaḥ) - saying; परमाशिषः (paramāśiṣaḥ) - supreme blessings; ते (te) - they; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - the sons of Pritha; तपोयोगपरा (tapoyogaparā) - devoted to austerity and yoga; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became;]
(Here itself let there be joy for the assembled; quickly, by Dhanañjaya who has acquired weapons. Thus saying, those supreme blessings, the sons of Pritha became devoted to austerity and yoga. (03-161-12))
"Let there be happiness here itself for those assembled; and quickly, by Dhanañjaya who has gained weapons." Saying thus and giving their supreme blessings, the sons of Pritha devoted themselves to austerity and yoga. (03-161-12)
दृष्ट्वा विचित्राणि गिरौ वनानि; किरीटिनं चिन्तयतामभीक्ष्णम्। बभूव रात्रिर्दिवसश्च तेषां; संवत्सरेणैव समानरूपः ॥०३-१६१-१३॥
dṛṣṭvā vicitrāṇi girau vanāni; kirīṭinaṃ cintayatām abhīkṣṇam. babhūva rātriḥ divasaś ca teṣām; saṃvatsareṇaiva samānarūpaḥ ॥03-161-13॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; विचित्राणि (vicitrāṇi) - wondrous; गिरौ (girau) - on the mountain; वनानि (vanāni) - forests; किरीटिनं (kirīṭinam) - the crowned one; चिन्तयताम् (cintayatām) - of those who were pondering; अभीक्ष्णम् (abhīkṣṇam) - constantly; बभूव (babhūva) - became; रात्रिः (rātriḥ) - night; दिवसः (divasaḥ) - day; च (ca) - and; तेषां (teṣām) - for them; संवत्सरेणैव (saṃvatsareṇa eva) - with the year itself; समानरूपः (samānarūpaḥ) - of equal form;]
(Having seen wondrous forests on the mountain, of those pondering constantly on the crowned one, night and day became for them, with the year itself, of equal form.)
After seeing the wondrous forests on the mountain, for those who constantly pondered the crowned one, night and day, over the course of a year, passed with equal appearance. (03-161-13)
यदैव धौम्यानुमते महात्मा; कृत्वा जटाः प्रव्रजितः स जिष्णुः। तदैव तेषां न बभूव हर्षः; कुतो रतिस्तद्गतमानसानाम् ॥०३-१६१-१४॥
yadaiva dhaumyānumate mahātmā; kṛtvā jaṭāḥ pravrajitaḥ sa jiṣṇuḥ. tadaiva teṣāṃ na babhūva harṣaḥ; kuto ratistadgatamānasānām ॥03-161-14॥
[यदा एव (yadā eva) - when indeed; धौम्य-अनुमते (dhaumya-anumate) - with Dhaumya's permission; महात्मा (mahātmā) - the great-souled one; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; जटाः (jaṭāḥ) - matted locks; प्रव्रजितः (pravrajitaḥ) - departed (for exile); सः (saḥ) - he; जिष्णुः (jiṣṇuḥ) - the victorious one; तदा एव (tadā eva) - just then; तेषाम् (teṣām) - for them; न बभूव (na babhūva) - there was not; हर्षः (harṣaḥ) - joy; कुतः (kutaḥ) - how; रतिः (ratiḥ) - pleasure; तत्-गतम्-मानसानाम् (tat-gatam-mānasānām) - of those whose minds were set on him;]
(When indeed, with Dhaumya's permission, the great-souled one, having made matted locks, departed (for exile), he, the victorious one; just then, for them, there was not joy; how could there be pleasure for those whose minds were set on him?)
Exactly when, with Dhaumya's permission, the great-souled and victorious one made his matted locks and departed as an exile, from that very moment there was no joy for them; how could there be any pleasure for those whose minds were fixed on him? (03-161-14)
भ्रातुर्नियोगात्तु युधिष्ठिरस्य; वनादसौ वारणमत्तगामी। यत्काम्यकात्प्रव्रजितः स जिष्णु; स्तदैव ते शोकहता बभूवुः ॥०३-१६१-१५॥
bhrātur-niyogāt tu yudhiṣṭhirasya; vanād asau vāraṇa-matta-gāmī. yat kāmyakāt pravrajitaḥ sa jiṣṇu; tad eva te śoka-hatā babhūvuḥ ॥03-161-15॥
[भ्रातुः (bhrātuḥ) - of the brother; (from bhrātṛ, genitive singular); नियोगात् (niyogāt) - by command; (from niyoga, ablative singular); तु (tu) - but; (particle); युधिष्ठिरस्य (yudhiṣṭhirasya) - of Yudhiṣṭhira; (genitive singular); वनात् (vanāt) - from the forest; (ablative singular); असौ (asau) - he; (that one); वारणमत्तगामी (vāraṇa-matta-gāmī) - one following the intoxicated elephant; (metaphorically: moving like an intoxicated elephant); यत्काम्यकात् (yat kāmyakāt) - who from Kāmyaka (forest); प्रव्रजितः (pravrajitaḥ) - departed; exiled; (gone forth); सः (sa) - he; (that person); जिष्णु (jiṣṇu) - the victorious one; conqueror; (Arjuna, epithet); तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; एव (eva) - indeed; surely; ते (te) - they; शोकहता (śoka-hatā) - struck by grief; (overcome by sorrow); बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - they became; (3rd person plural, perfect of 'bhū' - to become);]
(But by the command of his brother, of Yudhiṣṭhira, from the forest, he, moving like an intoxicated elephant, who from Kāmyaka departed, that conqueror—then indeed, they became stricken by grief.)
But at the command of his brother Yudhiṣṭhira, that conqueror who left the Kāmyaka forest and moved like an intoxicated elephant—when he departed from the forest, they indeed became overwhelmed with grief. (03-161-15)
तथा तु तं चिन्तयतां सिताश्व; मस्त्रार्थिनं वासवमभ्युपेतम्। मासोऽथ कृच्छ्रेण तदा व्यतीत; स्तस्मिन्नगे भारत भारतानाम् ॥०३-१६१-१६॥
tathā tu taṃ cintayatāṃ sitāśva; astrārthinaṃ vāsavam abhyupetam। māso'tha kṛcchreṇa tadā vyatīta; tasminnage bhārata bhāratānām॥03-161-16॥

(Thus but him, while thinking of the white-horsed one, of the seeker of weapons, Indra who was approached, a month then with difficulty then passed in that mountain, O Bhārata, of the Bharatas.)

(Then at one time, having seen the Mahendra's vehicle, driven by Hari, suddenly approached, shining like lightning, joy arose for Arjuna among those great chariot-warriors thinking about him.)
Then at one time, as the great chariot of Indra, driven by Hari, suddenly approached, shining like lightning, joy arose for Arjuna among the great warriors who were thinking of him. (03-161-17)
स दीप्यमानः सहसान्तरिक्षं; प्रकाशयन्मातलिसङ्गृहीतः। बभौ महोल्केव घनान्तरस्था; शिखेव चाग्नेर्ज्वलिता विधूमा ॥०३-१६१-१८॥
sa dīpyamānaḥ sahasāntarikṣaṁ; prakāśayan mātali-saṅgṛhītaḥ। babhau maholkeva ghanāntarasthā; shikheva cāgner jvalitā vidhūmā ॥03-161-18॥

(He shining suddenly the sky, illuminating, seized by Mātali, appeared like a great meteor situated within clouds, and like a flame of fire blazing without smoke.)

तमास्थितः संददृशे किरीटी; स्रग्वी वराण्याभरणानि बिभ्रत्। धनञ्जयो वज्रधरप्रभावः; श्रिया ज्वलन्पर्वतमाजगाम ॥०३-१६१-१९॥
tam āsthitaḥ saṁdadṛśe kirīṭī; sr̥gvī varāṇy-ābharaṇāni bibhrat. dhanañjayaḥ vajradhara-prabhāvaḥ; śriyā jvalan parvatam ājagāma ॥03-161-19॥

(Him seated upon appeared, crowned, adorned with garlands, bearing excellent ornaments. Dhanañjaya, having the splendor of Vajradhara, shining with beauty, approached the mountain. (03-161-19))
He, seated there, appeared crowned, adorned with garlands and bearing excellent ornaments. Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), shining with the splendor of Vajradhara (Indra), approached the mountain, radiant with beauty. (03-161-19)

(He, having approached the mountain, Kirīṭamālī; having descended from Mahendra's carrier from there; having first saluted the feet of Dhaumya, then and after Ajātaśatru.)
Kirīṭamālī (Arjuna), approaching the mountain and descending from Indra's chariot, first saluted Dhaumya's feet, then afterwards those of Yudhiṣṭhira (Ajātaśatru). (03-161-20)
वृकोदरस्यापि ववन्द पादौ; माद्रीसुताभ्यामभिवादितश्च। समेत्य कृष्णां परिसान्त्व्य चैनां; प्रह्वोऽभवद्भ्रातुरुपह्वरे सः ॥०३-१६१-२१॥
vṛkodarasya api vavanda pādau; mādrī-sutābhyām abhivāditaś ca. sametya kṛṣṇāṃ parisantvya ca enāṃ; prahvaḥ abhavat bhrātuḥ upahvare saḥ ॥03-161-21॥
[वृकोदरस्यापि (vṛkodarasya api) - of Vṛkodara (Bhīma) also; ववन्द (vavanda) - (he) bowed; पादौ (pādau) - feet; माद्रीसुताभ्याम् (mādrī-sutābhyām) - by the two sons of Mādrī; अभिवादितः (abhivāditaḥ) - saluted; च (ca) - and; समेत्य (sametya) - approaching; कृष्णाम् (kṛṣṇām) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); परिसान्त्व्य (parisantvya) - soothing; च (ca) - and; एनाम् (enām) - her; प्रह्वः (prahvaḥ) - humble; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; भ्रातुः (bhrātuḥ) - of (his) brother; उपह्वरे (upahvare) - in the presence; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(Of Vṛkodara also (he) bowed at the feet; and was saluted by the two sons of Mādrī. Approaching Kṛṣṇā, soothing her also, humble he became in the presence of his brother.)
He also bowed at Bhīma’s feet and was saluted by Mādrī’s two sons. Approaching Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) and soothing her, he became humble before his brother. (03-161-21)
बभूव तेषां परमः प्रहर्ष; स्तेनाप्रमेयेण समागतानाम्। स चापि तान्प्रेक्ष्य किरीटमाली; ननन्द राजानमभिप्रशंसन् ॥०३-१६१-२२॥
babhūva teṣāṃ paramaḥ praharṣaḥ; tena aprameyeṇa samāgatānām. sa ca api tān prekṣya kirīṭamālī; nananda rājānam abhipraśaṃsan ॥03-161-22॥
[बभूव (babhūva) - became; occurred; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; परमः (paramaḥ) - supreme; highest; प्रहर्षः (praharṣaḥ) - delight; great joy; तेन (tena) - by him; अप्रमेयेण (aprameyeṇa) - immeasurable; boundless; समागतानाम् (samāgatānām) - of those assembled; of those who had gathered; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तान् (tān) - them; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - having seen; beholding; किरीटमाली (kirīṭamālī) - one adorned with a crown; crowned one; ननन्द (nananda) - rejoiced; was delighted; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; अभिप्रशंसन् (abhipraśaṃsan) - praising; lauding;]
(There arose among them supreme delight; by him, for those assembled in immeasurable (number). And he also, seeing them, the crowned one, rejoiced while praising the king.)
A supreme joy arose among them; by him, for all those who had assembled in countless numbers. And he too, beholding them, the crowned one, rejoiced, and praised the king. (03-161-22)
यमास्थितः सप्त जघान पूगा; न्दितेः सुतानां नमुचेर्निहन्ता। तमिन्द्रवाहं समुपेत्य पार्थाः; प्रदक्षिणं चक्रुरदीनसत्त्वाः ॥०३-१६१-२३॥
yamāsthitaḥ sapta jaghāna pūgān diteḥ sutānāṃ namucer nihantā। tam indravāhaṃ samupetya pārthāḥ; pradakṣiṇaṃ cakrur adīnasattvāḥ ॥03-161-23॥
[यमास्थितः (yamāsthitaḥ) - abiding with Yama; सप्त (sapta) - seven; जघान (jaghāna) - he struck down; पूगान् (pūgān) - bands; दितेः (diteḥ) - of Diti; सुतानाम् (sutānām) - of the sons; नमुचेः (namuceḥ) - of Namuci; निहन्ता (nihantā) - slayer; तम् (tam) - him; इन्द्रवाहम् (indravāham) - Indra-charioteer; समुपेत्य (samupetya) - approaching; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - the sons of Pṛthā (Arjuna and his brothers); प्रदक्षिणम् (pradakṣiṇam) - circumambulation; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - they made; अदीनसत्त्वाः (adīnasattvāḥ) - with steadfast courage;]
(Abiding with Yama, he struck down the seven bands of the sons of Diti, the slayer of Namuci. Approaching him, Indra's charioteer, the Pārthas made a circumambulation with steadfast courage.)
Having stayed with Yama, he slew the seven hosts of the sons of Diti, the destroyer of Namuci. Then, the Pārthas, approaching Indra's charioteer, circumambulated him with unwavering hearts. (3-161-23)
ते मातलेश्चक्रुरतीव हृष्टाः; सत्कारमग्र्यं सुरराजतुल्यम्। सर्वं यथावच्च दिवौकसस्ता; न्पप्रच्छुरेनं कुरुराजपुत्राः ॥०३-१६१-२४॥
te mātaleś cakrur atīva hṛṣṭāḥ; satkāram agryaṃ sura-rāja-tulyam. sarvaṃ yathāvat ca divaukasaḥ tān papracchu enaṃ kuru-rāja-putrāḥ ॥03-161-24॥
[ते (te) - they; मातलेः (mātaleḥ) - to Mātali; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - did; (performed; gave;) अतीव (atīva) - exceedingly; हृष्टाः (hṛṣṭāḥ) - rejoiced; delighted; सत्कारम् (satkāram) - honor; अग्र्यम् (agryam) - excellent; सुरराजतुल्यम् (sura-rāja-tulyam) - equal to the king of the gods; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; यथावत् (yathāvat) - properly; as is fitting; च (ca) - and; दिवौकसः (divaukasaḥ) - the dwellers of heaven (the gods); तान् (tān) - them; पप्रच्छुः (papracchuḥ) - asked; एनम् (enam) - him; कुरुराजपुत्राः (kuru-rāja-putrāḥ) - the sons of the king of the Kurus;]
(They, exceedingly rejoiced, did to Mātali honor excellent, equal to the king of the gods. Everything as is fitting, the dwellers of heaven them and asked him, the sons of the king of the Kurus.)
They, exceedingly delighted, paid to Mātali the highest honor, like that accorded to the king of the gods. The Kurus' royal sons, along with the heavenly beings, properly honored him in all respects and then questioned him. (03-161-24)
तानप्यसौ मातलिरभ्यनन्द; त्पितेव पुत्राननुशिष्य चैनान्। ययौ रथेनाप्रतिमप्रभेण; पुनः सकाशं त्रिदिवेश्वरस्य ॥०३-१६१-२५॥
tān apy asau mātalir abhyananda; t piteva putrān anuśiṣya ca enān. yayau rathena apratima-prabheṇa; punaḥ sakāśaṃ tridiveśvarasya ॥03-161-25॥
[तान् (tān) - them; अपि (api) - also; असौ (asau) - he; मातलिः (mātaliḥ) - Mātali; अभ्यनन्द (abhy-ananda) - greeted; पितेव (pitā iva) - like a father; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; अनुशिष्य (anuśiṣya) - having instructed; च (ca) - and; एतान् (etān) - these (them); ययौ (yayau) - departed; रथेन (rathena) - by the chariot; अप्रतिमप्रभेण (apratima-prabheṇa) - of unrivalled brilliance; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; सकाशं (sakāśam) - to the presence; त्रिदिवेश्वरस्य (tridiveśvarasya) - of the Lord of Heaven;]
(He, Mātali, also greeted them, and having instructed these as a father (would) sons, departed by the chariot of unrivalled brilliance again to the presence of the Lord of Heaven.)
Mātali also greeted them and, after instructing them like a father to his sons, departed by his brilliantly shining chariot once more to the Lord of Heaven’s presence. (03-161-25)
गते तु तस्मिन्वरदेववाहे; शक्रात्मजः सर्वरिपुप्रमाथी। शक्रेण दत्तानि ददौ महात्मा; महाधनान्युत्तमरूपवन्ति ॥ दिवाकराभाणि विभूषणानि; प्रीतः प्रियायै सुतसोममात्रे ॥०३-१६१-२६॥
gate tu tasmin varadevavāhe; śakrātmajaḥ sarvaripu-pramāthī. śakreṇa dattāni dadau mahātmā; mahādhanāni uttamarūpavanti ॥ divākarābhāṇi vibhūṣaṇāni; prītaḥ priyāyai sutasomamātre ॥03-161-26॥
[गते (gate) - having gone; (he) having departed; तु (tu) - but; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - that (one); वरदेववाहे (varadevavāhe) - Varadeva's vehicle (elephant, Airāvata); शक्रात्मजः (śakrātmajaḥ) - Śakra's son (Jayanta); सर्वरिपुप्रमाथी (sarvaripu-pramāthī) - crusher of all enemies; शक्रेण (śakreṇa) - by Śakra; दत्तानि (dattāni) - given; ददौ (dadau) - he gave; महात्मा (mahātmā) - the great-souled (one); महाधनानि (mahādhanāni) - great treasures; उत्तमरूपवन्ति (uttamarūpavanti) - possessing excellent forms; दिवाकराभाणि (divākarābhāṇi) - shining like the sun; विभूषणानि (vibhūṣaṇāni) - ornaments; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - being pleased; प्रियायै (priyāyai) - to (his) beloved; सुतसोममात्रे (sutasomamātre) - to the mother of Sutasoma;]
(But when that Varadeva's vehicle had gone, Śakra's son, crusher of all enemies, the great-souled (one), gave (her) the treasures given by Śakra, having excellent forms, ornaments shining like the sun, being pleased, to his beloved, to the mother of Sutasoma.)
But when Varadeva's mount had departed, Jayanta, the great soul and vanquisher of all enemies, gave to his beloved, the mother of Sutasoma, the splendid treasures presented by Indra, including ornaments shining like the sun, out of affection. (03-161-26)
ततः स तेषां कुरुपुङ्गवानां; तेषां च सूर्याग्निसमप्रभाणाम्। विप्रर्षभाणामुपविश्य मध्ये; सर्वं यथावत्कथयां बभूव ॥०३-१६१-२७॥
tataḥ sa teṣāṃ kurupuṅgavānāṃ; teṣāṃ ca sūryāgnisamaprabhāṇām. viprarṣabhāṇām upaviśya madhye; sarvaṃ yathāvat kathayāṃ babhūva ॥03-161-27॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; कुरुपुङ्गवानां (kurupuṅgavānāṃ) - of the foremost of the Kurus; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; च (ca) - and; सूर्याग्निसमप्रभाणाम् (sūryāgnisamaprabhāṇām) - whose radiance was equal to the sun and fire; विप्रर्षभाणाम् (viprarṣabhāṇām) - of the foremost of the Brāhmaṇas; उपविश्य (upaviśya) - having sat down; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; सर्वम् (sarvam) - everything; यथावत् (yathāvat) - as it was; कथयाम् (kathayām) - to relate; बभूव (babhūva) - he became;]
(Then he, of them the foremost of the Kurus, and of them who were equal in radiance to the sun and fire, having sat in the midst of the foremost of the Brāhmaṇas, everything as it was, to relate, he became.)
Then he, being among the best of the Kurus and those radiant like the sun and fire, having seated himself in the midst of the foremost Brāhmaṇas, began to narrate everything as it had happened. (03-161-27)
एवं मयास्त्राण्युपशिक्षितानि; शक्राच्च वाताच्च शिवाच्च साक्षात्। तथैव शीलेन समाधिना च; प्रीताः सुरा मे सहिताः सहेन्द्राः ॥०३-१६१-२८॥
evaṁ mayāstrāṇyupaśikṣitāni; śakrāc ca vātāc ca śivāc ca sākṣāt. tathaiva śīlena samādhinā ca; prītāḥ surā me sahitāḥ sahendrāḥ ॥03-161-28॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; मया (mayā) - by me; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - missiles (weapons); उपशिक्षितानि (upaśikṣitāni) - have been learned; शक्रात् (śakrāt) - from Śakra (Indra); च (ca) - and; वातात् (vātāt) - from Vāta (the wind god); च (ca) - and; शिवात् (śivāt) - from Śiva; च (ca) - and; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same manner; शीलेन (śīlena) - by virtue; समाधिना (samādhinā) - by concentration; च (ca) - and; प्रीताः (prītāḥ) - pleased; सुराः (surāḥ) - gods; मे (me) - to me; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - united; सहेन्द्राः (sahendrāḥ) - with Indra;]
(Thus by me, missiles have been learned; from Śakra and from Vāta and from Śiva, directly. In the same manner, by virtue and by concentration also; pleased, the gods are to me, united with Indra.)
Thus, I have learned the missiles directly from Śakra, Vāta, and Śiva. Similarly, through virtue and concentration, the gods together with Indra are pleased with me. (03-161-28)
सङ्क्षेपतो वै स विशुद्धकर्मा; तेभ्यः समाख्याय दिवि प्रवेशम्। माद्रीसुताभ्यां सहितः किरीटी; सुष्वाप तामावसतिं प्रतीतः ॥०३-१६१-२९॥
saṅkṣepato vai sa viśuddhakarmā; tebhyaḥ samākhyāya divi praveśam. mādrīsutābhyāṃ sahitaḥ kirīṭī; suṣvāpa tāmāvasatiṃ pratītaḥ ॥03-161-29॥
[सङ्क्षेपतो (saṅkṣepato) - in brief; वै (vai) - indeed; स (sa) - he; विशुद्धकर्मा (viśuddhakarmā) - of pure deeds; तेभ्यः (tebhyaḥ) - to them; समाख्याय (samākhyāya) - having declared; दिवि (divi) - to heaven; प्रवेशम् (praveśam) - entry; माद्रीसुताभ्यां (mādrīsutābhyām) - with the two sons of Mādrī; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; किरीटी (kirīṭī) - the one with a crown; सुष्वाप (suṣvāpa) - slept; ताम् (tām) - that; आवसतिम् (āvasatim) - residence; प्रतीतः (pratītaḥ) - trusting;]
(In brief, indeed, he of pure deeds, having declared to them the entry into heaven, together with the two sons of Mādrī, the crowned one slept, trusting in that residence.)
In short, that pure-hearted one, after informing them of the entry to heaven, slept peacefully in that abode, accompanied by the two sons of Mādrī and wearing his crown. (03-161-29)
