एतस्मिन्नेव काले तु सर्ववादित्रनिस्वनः। बभूव तुमुलः शब्दस्त्वन्तरिक्षे दिवौकसाम् ॥०३-१६२-१॥
etasminn eva kāle tu sarva-vāditra-nisvanaḥ। babhūva tumulaḥ śabdas tv antarikṣe divaukasām॥03-162-1॥
[एतस्मिन्नेव (etasminn eva) - in this indeed; on this (occasion); काले (kāle) - time; तु (tu) - but; सर्ववादित्रनिस्वनः (sarva-vāditra-nisvanaḥ) - all-instruments-sounds; sound of all musical instruments; बभूव (babhūva) - arose; became; occurred; तुमुलः (tumulaḥ) - loud; tumultuous; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; त्वन्तरिक्षे (tv antarikṣe) - indeed in the sky; दिवौकसाम् (divaukasām) - of the dwellers of heaven (gods);]
(In this very time, but all-instruments-sounds arose, loud sound indeed in the sky of the dwellers of heaven.)
But at this very moment, a tumultuous sound of all musical instruments arose in the sky among the dwellers of heaven. (03-162-1)
रथनेमिस्वनश्चैव घण्टाशब्दश्च भारत। पृथग्व्यालमृगाणां च पक्षिणां चैव सर्वशः ॥०३-१६२-२॥
rathanemisvanaścaiva ghaṇṭāśabdaśca bhārata। pṛthagvyālamṛgāṇāṃ ca pakṣiṇāṃ caiva sarvaśaḥ ॥03-162-2॥
[रथनेमिस्वनः (rathanemisvanaḥ) - sound of chariot-wheels; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; घण्टा-शब्दः (ghaṇṭā-śabdaḥ) - bell-sound; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; पृथक् (pṛthak) - separately; व्याल-मृगाणां (vyāla-mṛgāṇām) - of serpents and wild animals; च (ca) - and; पक्षिणां (pakṣiṇām) - of birds; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely;]
(The sound of chariot-wheels and indeed the bell-sound and, O Bhārata, separately of serpents and wild-animals and of birds indeed entirely.)
O Bhārata, the sounds of chariot-wheels and bells, and the cries of serpents, wild animals, and birds, were heard everywhere in every manner. (03-162-2)
तं समन्तादनुययुर्गन्धर्वाप्सरसस्तथा। विमानैः सूर्यसङ्काशैर्देवराजमरिंदमम् ॥०३-१६२-३॥
taṃ samantād anuyayur gandharvāpsarasas tathā। vimānaiḥ sūryasaṅkāśair devarājam ariṃdamam ॥03-162-3॥

(Him from all sides followed Gandharvas and Apsarases also, with aerial chariots radiant like the sun, the Lord of the gods, the subduer of enemies.)
From all sides, Gandharvas and Apsarases also followed him—the Lord of the gods and subduer of enemies—with aerial chariots shining like the sun. (03-162-3)
ततः स हरिभिर्युक्तं जाम्बूनदपरिष्कृतम्। मेघनादिनमारुह्य श्रिया परमया ज्वलन् ॥०३-१६२-४॥
tataḥ sa haribhir yuktaṃ jāmbūnadapariṣkṛtam। meghanādinam āruhya śriyā paramayā jvalan ॥03-162-4॥

(Then he, having mounted the chariot yoked by horses, adorned with gold, making the sound of a cloud, shining with supreme splendor.)
Then, having mounted the chariot yoked with horses and adorned with gold, resounding like a cloud, he shone with supreme splendor. (03-162-4)
पार्थानभ्याजगामाशु देवराजः पुरंदरः। आगत्य च सहस्राक्षो रथादवरुरोह वै ॥०३-१६२-५॥
pārthān abhyājagāmāśu devarājaḥ puraṁdaraḥ। āgatya ca sahasrākṣaḥ rathād avaruroha vai॥03-162-5॥

(To the Pārthas, King of the gods, Purandara, quickly approached; having come, and the thousand-eyed (Indra) descended truly from the chariot.)
King of the gods, Purandara, quickly approached the Pārthas; having arrived, the thousand-eyed Indra then descended from his chariot. (03-162-5)
तं दृष्ट्वैव महात्मानं धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। भ्रातृभिः सहितः श्रीमान्देवराजमुपागमत् ॥०३-१६२-६॥
taṃ dṛṣṭvaiva mahātmānaṃ dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ śrīmān devarājam upāgamat ॥03-162-6॥

(Him having seen indeed, the great-souled king of dharma Yudhishthira, with brothers, together, prosperous, king of the gods, approached.)
On seeing him, the great-souled king of dharma, Yudhishthira, accompanied by his brothers, the illustrious one, approached the king of the gods. (03-162-6)
पूजयामास चैवाथ विधिवद्भूरिदक्षिणः। यथार्हममितात्मानं विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा ॥०३-१६२-७॥
pūjayāmāsa caivātha vidhivadbhūridakṣiṇaḥ। yathārhamamitātmānaṃ vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā ॥03-162-7॥

(He worshipped and indeed then according to rule, being of great gifts, as was proper, those of boundless self by action prescribed by rule.)
Then, being generous in gifts, he worshipped those of boundless spirit, according to proper rituals and prescribed acts, as it was appropriate. (03-162-7)
धनञ्जयश्च तेजस्वी प्रणिपत्य पुरंदरम्। भृत्यवत्प्रणतस्तस्थौ देवराजसमीपतः ॥०३-१६२-८॥
dhanañjayaś ca tejasvī praṇipatya puraṃdaram। bhṛtyavat praṇatas tasthau devarāja-samīpataḥ॥03-162-8॥

आप्यायत महातेजाः कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। धनञ्जयमभिप्रेक्ष्य विनीतं स्थितमन्तिके ॥०३-१६२-९॥
āpyāyata mahātejaḥ kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। dhanañjayam abhiprekṣya vinītaṃ sthitam antike ॥03-162-9॥
[आप्यायत (āpyāyata) - having approached; महातेजाः (mahātejaḥ) - of great energy; कुन्तीपुत्रः (kuntīputraḥ) - the son of Kuntī; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Arjuna; अभिप्रेक्ष्य (abhiprekṣya) - having looked upon; विनीतम् (vinītam) - humble; स्थितम् (sthitam) - standing; अन्तिके (antike) - near;]
(Having approached, the great-energied son of Kuntī, Yudhiṣṭhira, having looked upon Arjuna, humble, standing near.)
Having come forward, the great and powerful Yudhiṣṭhira, son of Kuntī, seeing Arjuna standing humbly nearby.
जटिलं देवराजस्य तपोयुक्तमकल्मषम्। हर्षेण महताविष्टः फल्गुनस्याथ दर्शनात् ॥०३-१६२-१०॥
jaṭilaṃ devarājasya tapoyuktam akalmaṣam। harṣeṇa mahatā āviṣṭaḥ phalgunasya atha darśanāt ॥03-162-10॥
[जटिलं (jaṭilam) - complicated; complex; देवराजस्य (devarājasya) - of the king of the gods; तपोयुक्तम् (tapoyuktam) - endowed with austerity; अकल्मषम् (akalmaṣam) - untainted; free from sin; हर्षेण (harṣeṇa) - with joy; महताऽविष्टः (mahatā āviṣṭaḥ) - overcome by great (joy); फल्गुनस्य (phalgunasya) - of Phalguna; अथ (atha) - then; दर्शनात् (darśanāt) - from the sight;]
(The complicated, of the king of gods, endowed with austerity, untainted; with great joy, overcome, of Phalguna, then, from the sight.)
Having seen Phalguna, he was overcome with great joy at the sight, (thinking of) the king of the gods whose complicated austerities were sinless. (03-162-10)
तं तथादीनमनसं राजानं हर्षसम्प्लुतम्। उवाच वचनं धीमान्देवराजः पुरंदरः ॥०३-१६२-११॥
taṃ tathādīnamanasaṃ rājānaṃ harṣasamplutam। uvāca vacanaṃ dhīmān devarājaḥ puraṃdaraḥ ॥03-162-11॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; तथा (tathā) - thus; अदीन-मनसं (adīna-manasaṃ) - not-dejected-mind; राजानम् (rājānam) - king; हर्ष-सम्प्लुतम् (harṣa-samplutam) - filled-with-joy; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; धीमान् (dhīmān) - the wise; देवराजः (devarājaḥ) - king-of-the-gods; पुरंदरः (puraṃdaraḥ) - Purandara;]
(Him thus not-dejected-in-mind king filled-with-joy, spoke word (the) wise king-of-the-gods Purandara.)
The wise Purandara, king of the gods, spoke these words to the king, who was thus with a steadfast mind and filled with joy. (03-162-11)
त्वमिमां पृथिवीं राजन्प्रशासिष्यसि पाण्डव। स्वस्ति प्राप्नुहि कौन्तेय काम्यकं पुनराश्रमम् ॥०३-१६२-१२॥
tvam imāṃ pṛthivīṃ rājan praśāsiṣyasi pāṇḍava। svasti prāpnuhi kaunteya kāmyakaṃ punarāśramam॥03-162-12॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; इमां (imāṃ) - this (feminine accusative singular); पृथिवीं (pṛthivīṃ) - earth; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रशासिष्यसि (praśāsiṣyasi) - you will govern; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - descendant of Pāṇḍu; स्वस्ति (svasti) - blessing; प्राप्नुहि (prāpnuhi) - attain; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - son of Kuntī; काम्यकं (kāmyakam) - Kāmyaka (name of a hermitage); पुनः (punar) - again; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - hermitage;]
(You this earth O king you will govern, O descendant of Pandu. Blessing attain, O son of Kunti, Kāmyaka hermitage again.)
O king, you will govern this earth, O descendant of Pandu. May you attain blessings, O son of Kunti, (as you return to) the Kāmyaka hermitage again. (03-162-12)
अस्त्राणि लब्धानि च पाण्डवेन; सर्वाणि मत्तः प्रयतेन राजन्। कृतप्रियश्चास्मि धनञ्जयेन; जेतुं न शक्यस्त्रिभिरेष लोकैः ॥०३-१६२-१३॥
astrāṇi labdhāni ca pāṇḍavena; sarvāṇi mattaḥ prayatena rājan. kṛtapriyaś cāsmi dhanañjayena; jetuṃ na śakyas tribhireṣa lokaiḥ ॥03-162-13॥
[अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - missiles; लब्धानि (labdhāni) - obtained; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवेन (pāṇḍavena) - by the son of Pāṇḍu; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; मत्तः (mattaḥ) - from me; प्रयतेन (prayatena) - through effort; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कृतप्रियः (kṛtapriyaḥ) - having his wish fulfilled; च (ca) - and; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; धनञ्जयेन (dhanañjayena) - by Dhanaṅjaya; जेतुम् (jetum) - to conquer; न (na) - not; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; त्रिभिः (tribhiḥ) - by the three; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; लोकैः (lokaiḥ) - worlds;]
(Missiles obtained and by the son of Pāṇḍu; all from me through effort, O king. Having his wish fulfilled and I am by Dhanaṅjaya; to conquer not possible by the three, this worlds.)
All the missiles have been obtained by the son of Pāṇḍu from me through his efforts, O king. I have had my wish fulfilled by Dhanaṅjaya; it is not possible to conquer him even with the three worlds. (03-162-13)
एवमुक्त्वा सहस्राक्षः कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम्। जगाम त्रिदिवं हृष्टः स्तूयमानो महर्षिभिः ॥०३-१६२-१४॥
evam-uktvā sahasrākṣaḥ kuntī-putraṃ yudhiṣṭhiram। jagāma tridivaṃ hṛṣṭaḥ stūyamāno maharṣibhiḥ॥03-162-14॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; सहस्राक्षः (sahasrākṣaḥ) - the thousand-eyed one (epithet of Indra); कुन्तीपुत्रम् (kuntī-putram) - the son of Kuntī; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira; जगाम (jagāma) - went; त्रिदिवम् (tridivam) - to heaven; हृष्टः (hṛṣṭaḥ) - joyful; स्तूयमानः (stūyamānaḥ) - being praised; महर्षिभिः (maharṣibhiḥ) - by great sages; ॥०३-१६२-१४॥ (॥03-162-14॥) -;]
(Thus having spoken, the thousand-eyed one (Indra) to the son of Kuntī, Yudhishthira, went to heaven, joyful, being praised by great sages.)
Having thus spoken to Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, Indra, the thousand-eyed, joyfully went to heaven, as he was praised by the great sages. (03-162-14)
धनेश्वरगृहस्थानां पाण्डवानां समागमम्। शक्रेण य इमं विद्वानधीयीत समाहितः ॥०३-१६२-१५॥
dhaneśvaragṛhasthānāṃ pāṇḍavānāṃ samāgamam। śakreṇa ya imaṃ vidvān adhīyīta samāhitaḥ ॥03-162-15॥
[धनेश्वरगृहस्थानाम् (dhaneśvara-gṛhasthānām) - of those dwelling in the house of the lord of wealth; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; समागमम् (samāgamam) - meeting; union; शक्रेण (śakreṇa) - by Indra; यः (yaḥ) - who; इमम् (imam) - this; विद्वान् (vidvān) - learned one; अधीयीत (adhīyīta) - should recite; should study; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - with concentration;]
(Of those dwelling in the house of the lord of wealth, of the Pāṇḍavas, meeting; by Indra, who this learned one should study with concentration.)
One who, being learned and concentrated, studies this (account of) the meeting of the Pāṇḍavas who dwelt in the house of the lord of wealth, as composed by Indra, (gains merit). (03-162-15)
संवत्सरं ब्रह्मचारी नियतः संशितव्रतः। स जीवेत निराबाधः सुसुखी शरदां शतम् ॥०३-१६२-१६॥
saṁvatsaraṁ brahmacārī niyataḥ saṁśitavrataḥ। sa jīvet nirābādhaḥ susukhī śaradāṁ śatam ॥03-162-16॥
[संवत्सरम् (saṁvatsaram) - a year; ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - celibate student; नियतः (niyataḥ) - self-controlled; संशितव्रतः (saṁśitavrataḥ) - firm in vows; सः (saḥ) - he; जीवेत् (jīvet) - may live; निराबाधः (nirābādhaḥ) - free from affliction; सुसुखी (susukhī) - very happy; शरदाम् (śaradām) - of autumns (years); शतम् (śatam) - a hundred;]
(A celibate student, self-controlled, firm in vows, for a year—he may live, free from affliction, very happy, for a hundred years of autumns.)
He who is a celibate student, self-controlled, and firm in his vows for one year may live a hundred autumns happily and without affliction. (03-162-16)
