ततो मामभिविश्वस्तं संरूढशरविक्षतम्। देवराजोऽनुगृह्येदं काले वचनमब्रवीत् ॥०३-१७१-१॥
tato mām abhiviśvastaṃ saṃrūḍha-śara-vikṣatam। devarājo' nugṛhyedaṃ kāle vacanam abravīt॥03-171-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; माम् (mām) - me; अभिविश्वस्तम् (abhiviśvastam) - utterly confiding; संरूढशरविक्षतम् (saṃrūḍha-śara-vikṣatam) - covered-with-healed (old) arrow-wounds; देवराजः (devarājaḥ) - the King of the gods; अनुगृह्य (anugṛhya) - having shown favor; इदम् (idam) - this; काले (kāle) - at the (right) time; वचनम् (vacanam) - word; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Then me, entirely confiding, covered with healed arrow-wounds, the King of the gods, having shown favor, at the (right) time, this word spoke.)
Then, when I was completely trusting and covered with healed arrow-wounds, the King of the gods graciously spoke these words to me at the proper time. (03-171-1)
दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि सर्वाणि त्वयि तिष्ठन्ति भारत। न त्वाभिभवितुं शक्तो मानुषो भुवि कश्चन ॥०३-१७१-२॥
divyānyastrāṇi sarvāṇi tvayi tiṣṭhanti bhārata। na tvābhibhavituṃ śakto mānuṣo bhuvi kaścana॥03-171-2॥
[दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; तिष्ठन्ति (tiṣṭhanti) - abide; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; न (na) - not; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अभिभवितुं (abhibhavituṃ) - to overcome; शक्तः (śaktaḥ) - able; मानुषः (mānuṣaḥ) - a human; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; कश्चन (kaścana) - anyone;]
(All the divine weapons abide in you, O Bhārata. Not able to overcome you is any human on earth.)
All the divine weapons are within you, O Bhārata. No human on earth is able to overcome you. (03-171-2)
भीष्मो द्रोणः कृपः कर्णः शकुनिः सह राजभिः। सङ्ग्रामस्थस्य ते पुत्र कलां नार्हन्ति षोडशीम् ॥०३-१७१-३॥
bhīṣmo droṇaḥ kṛpaḥ karṇaḥ śakuniḥ saha rājabhiḥ। saṅgrāmasthasya te putra kalāṃ nārhanti ṣoḍaśīm ॥03-171-3॥
[भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhīṣma; द्रोणः (droṇaḥ) - Droṇa; कृपः (kṛpaḥ) - Kṛpa; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; शकुनिः (śakuniḥ) - Śakuni; सह (saha) - together with; राजभिः (rājabhiḥ) - with kings; सङ्ग्रामस्थस्य (saṅgrāmasthasya) - of (him) standing in battle; ते (te) - your; पुत्र (putra) - son; कलां (kalāṃ) - fraction; नार्हन्ति (nārhanti) - do not deserve; षोडशीम् (ṣoḍaśīm) - the sixteenth part;]
(Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa, Karṇa, Śakuni, together with kings, of your son standing in battle, a fraction do not deserve, (even) the sixteenth part.)
Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa, Karṇa, and Śakuni—along with the kings—do not deserve even a sixteenth part of your son when he stands in battle. (03-171-3)
इदं च मे तनुत्राणं प्रायच्छन्मघवान्प्रभुः। अभेद्यं कवचं दिव्यं स्रजं चैव हिरण्मयीम् ॥०३-१७१-४॥
idaṃ ca me tanutrāṇaṃ prāyacchan maghavān prabhuḥ। abhedyaṃ kavacaṃ divyaṃ srajaṃ caiva hiraṇmayīm ॥03-171-4॥
[इदं (idaṃ) - this; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - to me; तनुत्राणं (tanutrāṇam) - body-protection; प्रायच्छन् (prāyacchan) - gave; मघवान् (maghavān) - Maghavān (Indra); प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; अभेद्यं (abhedyam) - impenetrable; कवचं (kavacam) - armor; दिव्यं (divyam) - divine; स्रजं (srajam) - garland; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; हिरण्मयीम् (hiraṇmayīm) - golden;]
(And this body-protection to me Maghavān, the lord, gave; impenetrable armor, divine garland and indeed golden.)
Maghavān, the lord, gave me this protection for my body: impenetrable armor and also a divine golden garland. (03-171-4)
देवदत्तं च मे शङ्खं देवः प्रादान्महारवम्। दिव्यं चेदं किरीटं मे स्वयमिन्द्रो युयोज ह ॥०३-१७१-५॥
devadattaṃ ca me śaṅkhaṃ devaḥ prādān-mahāravam। divyaṃ ca idaṃ kirīṭaṃ me svayam-indraḥ yuyoja ha ॥03-171-5॥

(And to me, the god gave the conch named Devadatta, with great sound. And this divine crown to me, Indra himself indeed attached.)
The god gave me the conch called Devadatta, which has a great sound, and Indra himself attached this divine crown to me. (03-171-5)
ततो दिव्यानि वस्त्राणि दिव्यान्याभरणानि च। प्रादाच्छक्रो ममैतानि रुचिराणि बृहन्ति च ॥०३-१७१-६॥
tato divyāni vastrāṇi divyānyābharaṇāni ca। prādāc chakro mama itāni rucirāṇi bṛhanti ca ॥03-171-6॥

(Then divine garments, divine ornaments also, Śakra gave to me these splendid, large and.)
Then Śakra (Indra) gave me these divine garments and ornaments, splendid and large. (03-171-6)
एवं सम्पूजितस्तत्र सुखमस्म्युषितो नृप। इन्द्रस्य भवने पुण्ये गन्धर्वशिशुभिः सह ॥०३-१७१-७॥
evaṃ sampūjitastatra sukham asmyuṣito nṛpa। indrasya bhavane puṇye gandharvaśiśubhiḥ saha ॥03-171-7॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus;, सम्पूजितः (sampūjitaḥ) - being honored;, तत्र (tatra) - there;, सुखम् (sukham) - happily;, अस्मि (asmi) - I am;, उषितः (uṣitaḥ) - resided;, नृप (nṛpa) - O king;, इन्द्रस्य (indrasya) - of Indra;, भवने (bhavane) - in the abode;, पुण्ये (puṇye) - auspicious;, गन्धर्वशिशुभिः (gandharvaśiśubhiḥ) - with the Gandharva youths;, सह (saha) - together;]
(Thus being honored there happily I have resided, O king, in the auspicious abode of Indra together with the Gandharva youths.)
O king, thus, being honored there, I have happily dwelt in Indra's auspicious palace together with the Gandharva youths. (03-171-7)
ततो मामब्रवीच्छक्रः प्रीतिमानमरैः सह। समयोऽर्जुन गन्तुं ते भ्रातरो हि स्मरन्ति ते ॥०३-१७१-८॥
tato mām abravīc chakraḥ prītimān amaraiḥ saha. samayo'rjuna gantum te bhrātaro hi smaranti te ॥03-171-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; माम् (mām) - to me; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra (Indra); प्रीतिमान् (prītimān) - full of affection; अमरैः (amaraiḥ) - with the immortals; सह (saha) - together; समयः (samayaḥ) - the time; अर्जुन (arjuna) - Arjuna; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; ते (te) - your; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; हि (hi) - indeed; स्मरन्ति (smaranti) - remember; ते (te) - you;]
(Then to me spoke Śakra, full of affection, together with the immortals: "The time, Arjuna, to go — your brothers indeed remember you." (03-171-8))
Then Śakra (Indra), full of affection and accompanied by the immortals, spoke to me: "Arjuna, it is time for you to go, for your brothers indeed remember you." (03-171-8)
एवमिन्द्रस्य भवने पञ्च वर्षाणि भारत। उषितानि मया राजन्स्मरता द्यूतजं कलिम् ॥०३-१७१-९॥
evam indrasya bhavane pañca varṣāṇi bhārata । uṣitāni mayā rājan smaratā dyūtajaṃ kalim ॥03-171-9॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; इन्द्रस्य (indrasya) - of Indra; भवने (bhavane) - in the mansion; पञ्च (pañca) - five; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; उषितानि (uṣitāni) - were spent; मया (mayā) - by me; राजन् (rājan) - O king; स्मरता (smaratā) - remembering; द्यूतजम् (dyūtajam) - arising from gambling; कलिम् (kalim) - trouble;]
(Thus in the mansion of Indra, five years, O Bhārata, were spent by me, O king, remembering the trouble arising from gambling.)
Thus, O Bhārata, O king, five years were spent by me in Indra's mansion, remembering the calamity caused by the game of dice. (03-171-9)
ततो भवन्तमद्राक्षं भ्रातृभिः परिवारितम्। गन्धमादनमासाद्य पर्वतस्यास्य मूर्धनि ॥०३-१७१-१०॥
tato bhavantam adrākṣam bhrātṛbhiḥ parivāritam। gandhamādanam āsādya parvatasya asya mūrdhani ॥03-171-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; भवन्तम् (bhavantam) - you; अद्राक्षम् (adrākṣam) - I saw; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; परिवारितम् (parivāritam) - surrounded; गन्धमादनम् (gandhamādanam) - Gandhamādana; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; पर्वतस्य (parvatasya) - of the mountain; अस्य (asya) - of this; मूर्धनि (mūrdhani) - on the summit;]
(Then you I saw, with brothers surrounded, Gandhamādana having reached, of this mountain on the summit.)
Then I saw you, surrounded by your brothers, having reached Gandhamādana, on the summit of this mountain. (03-171-10)
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca॥

diṣṭyā dhanañjayāstrāṇi tvayā prāptāni bhārata। diṣṭyā cārādhito rājā devānām īśvaraḥ prabhuḥ ॥03-171-11॥
[दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; by good luck; धनञ्जयास्त्राणि (dhanañjayāstrāṇi) - Dhanañjaya's weapons; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; प्राप्तानि (prāptāni) - have been obtained; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; by good luck; च (ca) - and; अराधितः (ārādhitaḥ) - has been propitiated; राजा (rājā) - the king; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; ईश्वरः (īśvaraḥ) - the lord; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the master;]
(By fortune Dhanañjaya's weapons by you have been obtained, O Bhārata. By fortune also has been propitiated the king, the lord, the master of the gods.)
By good fortune, O Bhārata, you have obtained Dhanañjaya's weapons; by good fortune also, the king, the lord and master of the gods, has been propitiated. (03-171-11)
दिष्ट्या च भगवान्स्थाणुर्देव्या सह परन्तप। साक्षाद्दृष्टः सुयुद्धेन तोषितश्च त्वयानघ ॥०३-१७१-१२॥
diṣṭyā ca bhagavān sthāṇur devyā saha parantapa। sākṣāt dṛṣṭaḥ su-yuddhena toṣitaś ca tvayānagha ॥03-171-12॥
[दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; by good luck; च (ca) - and; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; the illustrious one; स्थाणुः (sthāṇuḥ) - Sthāṇu; (name of Śiva); देव्याः (devyā) - with the goddess; (the Devi); सह (saha) - along with; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - seen; सुयुद्धेन (su-yuddhena) - by good battle; through an excellent fight; तोषितः (toṣitaḥ) - pleased; च (ca) - and; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]
(By fortune and the Lord Sthāṇu with the goddess, O scorcher of foes, directly seen, by good battle pleased, and by you, O sinless one.)
By good fortune, O sinless one, you have directly seen the Lord Sthāṇu together with the goddess, and you have pleased Him with your excellent battle, O scorcher of foes. (03-171-12)
दिष्ट्या च लोकपालैस्त्वं समेतो भरतर्षभ। दिष्ट्या वर्धामहे सर्वे दिष्ट्यासि पुनरागतः ॥०३-१७१-१३॥
diṣṭyā ca lokapālaistvaṃ sameto bharatarṣabha। diṣṭyā vardhāmahe sarve diṣṭyāsi punarāgataḥ ॥03-171-13॥
[दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; luckily; च (ca) - and; लोकपालैः (lokapālaiḥ) - with guardians of the world; with protectors of the world; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; समेतः (sametaḥ) - united; joined; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull among the Bharatas; best among the Bharatas; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; luckily; वर्धामहे (vardhāmahe) - we are gladdened; we rejoice; सर्वे (sarve) - all; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; luckily; असि (asi) - you are; पुनरागतः (punarāgataḥ) - returned again; come back;]
(By fortune and with the guardians of the world, you united, O bull among the Bharatas. By fortune we all are gladdened, by fortune you have returned again.)
By good fortune, O bull among the Bharatas, you have joined with the guardians of the world. By good fortune, we all rejoice; by good fortune, you have returned again. (03-171-13)
अद्य कृत्स्नामिमां देवीं विजितां पुरमालिनीम्। मन्ये च धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रानपि वशीकृतान् ॥०३-१७१-१४॥
adya kṛtsnāmimāṁ devīṁ vijitāṁ puramālinīm। manye ca dhṛtarāṣṭrasya putrān api vaśīkṛtān ॥03-171-14॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; कृत्स्नाम् (kṛtsnām) - entire; इमाम् (imām) - this; देवीं (devīṁ) - goddess; विजिताम् (vijitām) - conquered; पुरमालिनीम् (puramālinīm) - city-garlanded (adorned with cities; one who has cities as garlands; epithet for goddess); मन्ये (manye) - I think; च (ca) - and; धृतराष्ट्रस्य (dhṛtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhritarashtra; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; अपि (api) - also; वशीकृतान् (vaśīkṛtān) - subdued;]
(Today, the entire this goddess, conquered, city-garlanded. I think and also the sons of Dhritarashtra subdued.)
Today I think even this entire goddess, adorned with cities, has been conquered; and even the sons of Dhritarashtra too are subdued. (03-171-14)
तानि त्विच्छामि ते द्रष्टुं दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि भारत। यैस्तथा वीर्यवन्तस्ते निवातकवचा हता ॥०३-१७१-१५॥
tāni tvicchāmi te draṣṭuṃ divyānyastrāṇi bhārata। yais tathā vīryavantas te nivātakavacā hatā ॥03-171-15॥
[तानि (tāni) - those; (neuter plural nominative) त्विच्छामि (tva icchāmi) - I wish (to see); ते (te) - your; (of you) द्रष्टुं (draṣṭum) - to see; दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; (neuter plural accusative) अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; यैः (yaiḥ) - by which; तथा (tathā) - thus; वीर्यवन्तः (vīryavantaḥ) - powerful; (masculine plural nominative) ते (te) - they; निवातकवचा (nivātakavacāḥ) - the Nivātakavacas; (proper noun - demon race) हता (hatāḥ) - were slain;]
(Those I wish, your, to see, divine weapons, O Bhārata; by which thus powerful they, the Nivātakavacas, were slain.)
O Bhārata, I wish to see those divine weapons of yours, by which the powerful Nivātakavacas were thus slain. (03-171-15)

श्वः प्रभाते भवान्द्रष्टा दिव्यान्यस्त्राणि सर्वशः। निवातकवचा घोरा यैर्मया विनिपातिताः ॥०३-१७१-१६॥
śvaḥ prabhāte bhavān draṣṭā divyāny astrāṇi sarvaśaḥ. nivātakavacā ghorā yair mayā vinipātitāḥ ॥03-171-16॥
[श्वः (śvaḥ) - tomorrow; प्रभाते (prabhāte) - at dawn; भवान् (bhavān) - you; द्रष्टा (draṣṭā) - will see; दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - missiles; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely; निवातकवचा (nivātakavacā) - Nivātakavacas; घोराः (ghorāḥ) - fierce; यैः (yair) - by which; मया (mayā) - by me; विनिपातिताः (vinipātitāḥ) - were slain;]
(Tomorrow at dawn you will see the divine missiles entirely, the fierce Nivātakavacas by which by me were slain.)
Tomorrow at dawn you will see all the divine missiles, by which I destroyed the fierce Nivātakavacas. (03-171-16)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥

एवमागमनं तत्र कथयित्वा धनञ्जयः। भ्रातृभिः सहितः सर्वै रजनीं तामुवास ह ॥०३-१७१-१७॥
evam-āgamanaṃ tatra kathayitvā dhanañjayaḥ। bhrātṛbhiḥ sahitaḥ sarvaiḥ rajanīṃ tām uvāsa ha॥03-171-17॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; आगमनम् (āgamanaṃ) - arrival; तत्र (tatra) - there; कथयित्वा (kathayitvā) - having told; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna; proper noun); भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with (his) brothers; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; सर्वै (sarvaiḥ) - with all; रजनीम् (rajanīṃ) - the night; ताम् (tām) - that; उवास (uvāsa) - remained; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Thus, having told (of his) arrival there, Dhanañjaya, together with all (his) brothers, remained that night indeed.)
Thus, having recounted his arrival there, Dhananjaya, together with all his brothers, spent that night. (03-171-17)
