काम्यकं प्राप्य कौन्तेया युधिष्ठिरपुरोगमाः। कृतातिथ्या मुनिगणैर्निषेदुः सह कृष्णया ॥०३-१८०-१॥
kāmyakaṃ prāpya kaunteyā yudhiṣṭhira-purogamāḥ। kṛtātithyā munigaṇair niṣeduḥ saha kṛṣṇayā ॥03-180-1॥
[काम्यकं (kāmyakam) - Kamyaka (forest); प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; कौन्तेया (kaunteyāḥ) - the sons of Kunti; युधिष्ठिरपुरोगमाः (yudhiṣṭhira-purogamāḥ) - led by Yudhishthira; कृतातिथ्या (kṛtātithyāḥ) - after having honored their guests; मुनिगणैः (munigaṇaiḥ) - by the groups of sages; निषेदुः (niṣeduḥ) - they sat down; सह (saha) - together with; कृष्णया (kṛṣṇayā) - with Krishna (Draupadi);]
(Having reached Kamyaka, the sons of Kunti, led by Yudhishthira, after having honored the groups of sages as guests, sat down together with Krishna (Draupadi).)
When they reached Kamyaka, the sons of Kunti, with Yudhishthira at their head, honored the groups of sages as guests, and then sat down together with Krishna (Draupadi). (03-180-1)
ततस्तान्परिविश्वस्तान्वसतः पाण्डुनन्दनान्। ब्राह्मणा बहवस्तत्र समन्तात्पर्यवारयन् ॥०३-१८०-२॥
tatas tān pariviśvastān vasataḥ pāṇḍunandanān। brāhmaṇā bahavas tatra samantāt paryavārayan ॥03-180-2॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तान् (tān) - them; परिविश्वस्तान् (pariviśvastān) - completely trusting; वसतः (vasataḥ) - dwelling; पाण्डुनन्दनान् (pāṇḍunandanān) - descendants of Pāṇḍu; ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - brāhmaṇas; बहवः (bahavaḥ) - many; तत्र (tatra) - there; समन्तात् (samantāt) - on all sides; पर्यवारयन् (paryavārayan) - encompassed;]
(Then, those completely trusting and dwelling descendants of Pāṇḍu, many brāhmaṇas there on all sides encompassed.)
Then, as the descendants of Pāṇḍu dwelt there in complete trust, many brāhmaṇas surrounded them on all sides. (03-180-2)
अथाब्रवीद्द्विजः कश्चिदर्जुनस्य प्रियः सखा। एष्यतीह महाबाहुर्वशी शौरिरुदारधीः ॥०३-१८०-३॥
athābravīddvijaḥ kaścidarjunasya priyaḥ sakhā। eṣyatīha mahābāhurvaśī śaurirudāradhīḥ ॥03-180-3॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - he said; द्विजः (dvijaḥ) - the Brāhmaṇa; कश्चित् (kaścit) - someone; अर्जुनस्य (arjunasya) - of Arjuna; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear; सखा (sakhā) - friend; एष्यति (eṣyati) - he will come; इह (iha) - here; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; वशी (vaśī) - self-controlled; शौरिः (śauriḥ) - descendant of Sura (Kṛṣṇa); उदारधीः (udāradhīḥ) - of noble intellect;]
(Then a Brāhmaṇa, someone dear friend of Arjuna, said: "Mighty-armed, self-controlled, noble-minded descendant of Sura (Kṛṣṇa) will come here." (03-180-3))
Then a Brāhmaṇa, a certain dear friend of Arjuna, said: "Kṛṣṇa, the mighty-armed, self-controlled, and noble-minded one, will come here." (03-180-3)
विदिता हि हरेर्यूयमिहायाताः कुरूद्वहाः। सदा हि दर्शनाकाङ्क्षी श्रेयोऽन्वेषी च वो हरिः ॥०३-१८०-४॥
viditā hi hareryūyamiha āyātāḥ kurūdvahāḥ। sadā hi darśanākāṅkṣī śreyo'nveṣī ca vo hariḥ॥03-180-4॥
[विदिता (viditā) - known; हि (hi) - indeed; हरेः (hareḥ) - of Hari; यूयम् (yūyam) - you (plural); इह (iha) - here; आयाताः (āyātāḥ) - have come; कुरूद्वहाः (kurūdvahāḥ) - leaders of the Kurus; सदा (sadā) - always; हि (hi) - indeed; दर्शनाकाङ्क्षी (darśanākāṅkṣī) - desiring to see; श्रेयोऽन्वेषी (śreyo'nveṣī) - seeker of good (śreyas); च (ca) - and; वः (vaḥ) - of you; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari;]
(Known indeed of Hari you here have come, leaders of the Kurus; always indeed desiring to see, seeker of good and of you is Hari.)
It is well known that you have come here for the sake of Hari, O leading Kurus; for Hari is always eager to see you and to seek your welfare. (03-180-4)
बहुवत्सरजीवी च मार्कण्डेयो महातपाः। स्वाध्यायतपसा युक्तः क्षिप्रं युष्मान्समेष्यति ॥०३-१८०-५॥
bahuvatsarajīvī ca mārkaṇḍeyo mahātapāḥ. svādhyāyatapasā yuktaḥ kṣipraṃ yuṣmān sameṣyati ॥03-180-5॥
[बहुवत्सरजीवी (bahuvatsarajīvī) - long-lived; one who has lived for many years; च (ca) - and; मार्कण्डेयः (mārkaṇḍeyaḥ) - Markandeya; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - of great austerity; स्वाध्यायतपसा (svādhyāyatapasā) - by the austerity of self-study of the Vedas; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - engaged; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; युष्मान् (yuṣmān) - to you (all); समेष्यति (sameṣyati) - he will come (to);]
(Long-lived and Markandeya of great austerity, engaged in the austerity of self-study, quickly to you all will come.)
The long-lived Markandeya, who is of great austerity and devoted to self-study, will soon come to you. (03-180-5)
तथैव तस्य ब्रुवतः प्रत्यदृष्यत केशवः। सैन्यसुग्रीवयुक्तेन रथेन रथिनां वरः ॥०३-१८०-६॥
tathaiva tasya bruvataḥ pratyadṛśyata keśavaḥ। sainya-sugrīvayuktena rathena rathināṃ varaḥ॥03-180-6॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; similarly; तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; ब्रुवतः (bruvataḥ) - while speaking; as he was saying; प्रत्यदृष्यत (pratyadṛśyata) - appeared; became visible; केशवः (keśavaḥ) - Keśava; (a name of Kṛṣṇa); सैन्यसुग्रीवयुक्तेन (sainya-sugrīvayuktena) - with an army-banner-adorned; रथेन (rathena) - by chariot; with a chariot; रथिनां (rathināṃ) - of the charioteers; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; the foremost;]
(In the same way, while he was speaking, Keśava appeared with a chariot adorned with the army-banner, the best of charioteers.)
Similarly, as he was speaking, Keśava, the best among charioteers, appeared in a chariot adorned with the army-banner. (03-180-6)
मघवानिव पौलोम्या सहितः सत्यभामया। उपायाद्देवकीपुत्रो दिदृक्षुः कुरुसत्तमान् ॥०३-१८०-७॥
maghavān iva paulomyā sahitaḥ satyabhāmayā | upāyād devakīputro didṛkṣuḥ kurusattamān ॥03-180-7॥
[मघवानिव (maghavān iva) - like Maghavan (Indra); पौलोम्या (paulomyā) - with Paulomī (Śacī); सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; together; together with; सत्यभामया (satyabhāmayā) - with Satyabhāmā; उपायात् (upāyāt) - approached; came near; देवकीपुत्रः (devakī-putraḥ) - the son of Devakī; दिदृक्षुः (didṛkṣuḥ) - desiring to see; कुरुसत्तमान् (kuru-sattamān) - the foremost of the Kurus;]
(Like Maghavan (Indra) with Paulomī (Śacī), accompanied with Satyabhāmā, the son of Devakī approached, desiring to see the foremost of the Kurus.)
Just as Indra arrives with Śacī (Paulomī), so the son of Devakī, accompanied by Satyabhāmā, approached longing to see the foremost among the Kurus. (03-180-7)
अवतीर्य रथात्कृष्णो धर्मराजं यथाविधि। ववन्दे मुदितो धीमान्भीमं च बलिनां वरम् ॥०३-१८०-८॥
avatīrya rathāt kṛṣṇo dharmarājaṃ yathāvidhi. vavande mudito dhīmān bhīmaṃ ca balināṃ varam ॥03-180-8॥
[अवतीर्य (avatīrya) - having descended; रथात् (rathāt) - from the chariot; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; धर्मराजम् (dharmarājam) - Dharmarāja (Yudhiṣṭhira); यथाविधि (yathāvidhi) - according to proper rule; ववन्दे (vavande) - he saluted; मुदितः (muditaḥ) - joyfully; धीमान् (dhīmān) - intelligent; भीमं (bhīmam) - Bhīma; च (ca) - and; बलिनां (balinām) - of the strong; वरम् (varam) - the best;]
(Having descended from the chariot, Kṛṣṇa, according to proper rule, joyfully and intelligently saluted Dharmarāja; (he saluted) Bhīma, too, the best of the strong.)
After descending from the chariot, Kṛṣṇa respectfully saluted Dharmarāja as prescribed, joyfully and wisely, and he also greeted Bhīma, the foremost among the strong. (03-180-8)
पूजयामास धौम्यं च यमाभ्यामभिवादितः। परिष्वज्य गुडाकेशं द्रौपदीं पर्यसान्त्वयत् ॥०३-१८०-९॥
pūjayāmāsa dhaumyaṃ ca yamābhyām abhivāditaḥ। pariṣvajya guḍākeśaṃ draupadīṃ paryasāntvayat॥03-180-9॥
[पूजयामास (pūjayāmāsa) - he honored; धौम्यं (dhaumyaṃ) - Dhaumya (the sage); च (ca) - and; यमाभ्याम् (yamābhyām) - by the twins (Yama and Yama), अभिवादितः (abhivāditaḥ) - having been greeted; परिष्वज्य (pariṣvajya) - embracing; गुडाकेशं (guḍākeśaṃ) - Guḍākeśa (Arjuna); द्रौपदीं (draupadīṃ) - Draupadī; पर्यसान्त्वयत् (paryasāntvayat) - he consoled;]
(He honored Dhaumya and, having been greeted by the twins, embracing Guḍākeśa and Draupadī, he consoled.)
He honored Dhaumya, and after being greeted by the twins, he embraced Guḍākeśa and consoled Draupadī. (03-180-9)
स दृष्ट्वा फल्गुनं वीरं चिरस्य प्रियमागतम्। पर्यष्वजत दाशार्हः पुनः पुनररिंदमम् ॥०३-१८०-१०॥
sa dṛṣṭvā phalgunaṃ vīraṃ cirasya priyamāgatam। paryaṣvajata dāśārhaḥ punaḥ punararindamam॥03-180-10॥
[स (sa) - he; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; फल्गुनं (phalgunaṃ) - Phalguna (Arjuna, proper noun, acc. sg.); वीरं (vīraṃ) - hero; चिरस्य (cirasya) - after a long time; प्रियं (priyam) - dear (friend); आगतम् (āgatam) - come; पर्यष्वजत (paryaṣvajata) - embraced; दाशार्हः (dāśārhaḥ) - the Dāśārha (Krishna, proper noun, nom. sg.); पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; अरिंदमम् (arindamam) - Arindama (conqueror of foes, epithet for Arjuna, acc. sg.);]
(He, having seen Phalguna, the hero, dear (friend) come after a long time, embraced the Dāśārha again and again, the conqueror of foes.)
Seeing Phalguna, the heroic and dear friend who had come after a long time, the Dāśārha (Krishna) embraced the conqueror of foes (Arjuna) again and again. (03-180-10)
तथैव सत्यभामापि द्रौपदीं परिषस्वजे। पाण्डवानां प्रियां भार्यां कृष्णस्य महिषी प्रिया ॥०३-१८०-११॥
tathaiva satyabhāmā api draupadīṁ pariṣasvaje. pāṇḍavānāṁ priyāṁ bhāryāṁ kṛṣṇasya mahiṣī priyā ॥03-180-11॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same manner; सत्यभामापि (satyabhāmā api) - Satyabhama also; द्रौपदीं (draupadīṁ) - Draupadi (object); परिषस्वजे (pariṣasvaje) - embraced; पाण्डवानां (pāṇḍavānāṁ) - of the Pandavas; प्रियां (priyāṁ) - beloved; भार्यां (bhāryāṁ) - wife; कृष्णस्य (kṛṣṇasya) - of Krishna; महिषी (mahiṣī) - queen; प्रिया (priyā) - beloved;]
(In the same manner Satyabhama also embraced Draupadi, the beloved wife of the Pandavas, the dear queen of Krishna.)

ततस्ते पाण्डवाः सर्वे सभार्याः सपुरोहिताः। आनर्चुः पुण्डरीकाक्षं परिवव्रुश्च सर्वशः ॥०३-१८०-१२॥
tataste pāṇḍavāḥ sarve sabhāryāḥ sapurohitāḥ। ānarcuḥ puṇḍarīkākṣaṃ parivavruśca sarvaśaḥ ॥03-180-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the sons of Pāṇḍu; सर्वे (sarve) - all; सभार्याः (sabhāryāḥ) - with their wives; सपुरोहिताः (sapurohitāḥ) - with their priests; आनर्चुः (ānarcuḥ) - worshipped; पुण्डरीकाक्षं (puṇḍarīkākṣam) - lotus-eyed one; परिवव्रुश्च (parivavruśca) - and encircled; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - completely;]
(Then they the Pāṇḍavas all with their wives with their priests worshipped the lotus-eyed one and encircled completely.)
Then all the Pāṇḍavas, along with their wives and their priests, worshipped the lotus-eyed one and completely encircled him. (03-180-12)
कृष्णस्तु पार्थेन समेत्य विद्वा; न्धनञ्जयेनासुरतर्जनेन। बभौ यथा भूतपतिर्महात्मा; समेत्य साक्षाद्भगवान्गुहेन ॥०३-१८०-१३॥
kṛṣṇas tu pārthena sametya vidvā; ndhanañjayenāsuratarjanena| babhau yathā bhūtapatir mahātmā; sametya sākṣād bhagavān guhena ॥03-180-13॥
[कृष्णस् (kṛṣṇas) - Kṛṣṇa; the dark one; the name of the deity; the person Kṛṣṇa; तु (tu) - but; however; पार्थेन (pārthena) - by Partha; by the son of Pṛthā (Arjuna); समेत्य (sametya) - having met; after meeting; विद्वा; न् (vidvān) - the learned; knowing; धनञ्जयेन (dhanañjayena) - by Dhanañjaya; by Arjuna; असुरतर्जनेन (asura-tarjanena) - by (his) act of threatening/dismaying asuras (demons); बभौ (babhau) - shone; appeared; यथा (yathā) - as; just as; भूतपतिः (bhūtapatiḥ) - the lord of beings; Śiva; महात्मा (mahātmā) - the great-souled one; great-minded; समेत्य (sametya) - having met; after meeting; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - in person; directly; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered one; the illustrious; गुहेन (guhena) - with Guha; with (the deity) Guha (Kārttikeya/Murugan);]
(Kṛṣṇa but by Partha having met, the learned by Dhanañjaya, by threatening the asuras; shone just as the lord of beings, the great-souled, having met directly the revered one with Guha. (03-180-13))
But Kṛṣṇa, having met with Arjuna (Partha), the wise one, accompanied by Dhanañjaya who threatened the asuras, shone like the great-souled lord of beings (Śiva) after meeting directly with the illustrious Guha. (03-180-13)
ततः समस्तानि किरीटमाली; वनेषु वृत्तानि गदाग्रजाय। उक्त्वा यथावत्पुनरन्वपृच्छ; त्कथं सुभद्रा च तथाभिमन्युः ॥०३-१८०-१४॥
tataḥ samastāni kirīṭamālī; vaneṣu vṛttāni gadāgrajāya। uktvā yathāvat punar anvapṛccha; t kathaṁ subhadrā ca tathābhimanyuḥ॥03-180-14॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; समस्तानि (samastāni) - all; किरीटमाली (kirīṭamālī) - the one adorned with a crown; वनेषु (vaneṣu) - in the forests; वृत्तानि (vṛttāni) - events that happened; गदाग्रजाय (gadāgrajāya) - to Gada's elder (Bhīma); उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having told; यथावत् (yathāvat) - properly; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अन्वपृच्छत् (anvapṛcchat) - inquired; कथम् (katham) - how; सुभद्रा (subhadrā) - Subhadrā; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - also; अभिमन्युः (abhimanyuḥ) - Abhimanyu;]
(Then all (that) the one adorned with a crown (Arjuna) in the forests events that happened to Gada's elder (Bhīma), having told properly again inquired (about) how Subhadrā and also Abhimanyu.)
Then, having properly recounted to Bhīma all the events that occurred in the forests, the crowned one (Arjuna) again asked how Subhadrā and Abhimanyu were doing. (03-180-14)
स पूजयित्वा मधुहा यथाव; त्पार्थांश्च कृष्णां च पुरोहितं च। उवाच राजानमभिप्रशंस; न्युधिष्ठिरं तत्र सहोपविश्य ॥०३-१८०-१५॥
sa pūjayitvā madhu-hā yathāvat; pārthān ca kṛṣṇām ca purohitaṃ ca. uvāca rājānam abhipraśaṃsya; yudhiṣṭhiram tatra saha-upaviśya ॥03-180-15॥
[स (sa) - he; पूजयित्वा (pūjayitvā) - having honored; मधुहा (madhu-hā) - Madhu-slayer; यथावत् (yathāvat) - as is proper; पार्थान् (pārthān) - Pārthas; च (ca) - and; कृष्णां (kṛṣṇām) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); च (ca) - and; पुरोहितं (purohitaṃ) - priest; च (ca) - and; उवाच (uvāca) - he spoke; राजानम् (rājānam) - to the king; अभिप्रशंस्य (abhipraśaṃsya) - having praised; युधिष्ठिरं (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira; तत्र (tatra) - there; सह (saha) - together; उपविश्य (upaviśya) - having sat down;]
(He, having honored Madhu-slayer as is proper, and the Pārthas, and Kṛṣṇā, and the priest, spoke to the king, having greatly praised Yudhiṣṭhira there, having sat down together.)
Having honored the slayer of Madhu, the Pārthas, Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī), and the priest as was proper, he sat down there together and praised Yudhiṣṭhira before addressing the king. (03-180-15)
धर्मः परः पाण्डव राज्यलाभा; त्तस्यार्थमाहुस्तप एव राजन्। सत्यार्जवाभ्यां चरता स्वधर्मं; जितस्तवायं च परश्च लोकः ॥०३-१८०-१६॥
dharmaḥ paraḥ pāṇḍava rājyalābhā; tasyārtham āhus tapa eva rājan. satyārjavābhyāṃ caratā svadharmaṃ; jitas tavāyaṃ ca paraś ca lokaḥ ॥03-180-16॥
[धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; परः (paraḥ) - supreme; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava; राज्यलाभात् (rājyalābhāt) - than gaining a kingdom; तस्य (tasya) - of that; अर्थम् (artham) - purpose; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they declare; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; एव (eva) - indeed; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सत्यार्जवाभ्याम् (satyārjavābhyām) - by truth and straightforwardness; चरता (caratā) - by practicing; स्वधर्मम् (svadharmam) - one's own righteousness; जितः (jitaḥ) - conquered; तव (tava) - by you; अयम् (ayam) - this; च (ca) - and; परः (paraḥ) - the other; च (ca) - and; लोकः (lokaḥ) - world;]
(Righteousness is supreme, O Pāṇḍava, than gaining a kingdom; of that purpose they declare austerity indeed, O king. By truth and straightforwardness, by practicing one's own righteousness, by you this and the other world are conquered.)
O Pāṇḍava, righteousness is superior to the attainment of a kingdom. For its sake, they say, austerity alone is to be pursued, O king. By practicing your own righteousness through truth and integrity, you have conquered both this world and the next. (03-180-16)
अधीतमग्रे चरता व्रतानि; सम्यग्धनुर्वेदमवाप्य कृत्स्नम्। क्षात्रेण धर्मेण वसूनि लब्ध्वा; सर्वे ह्यवाप्ताः क्रतवः पुराणाः ॥०३-१८०-१७॥
adhītam agre caratā vratāni; samyag dhanurvedam avāpya kṛtsnam. kṣātreṇa dharmeṇa vasūni labdhvā; sarve hy avāptāḥ kratavaḥ purāṇāḥ ॥03-180-17॥
[अधीतम् (adhītam) - learned; अग्रे (agre) - before; चरता (caratā) - by performing; व्रतानि (vratāni) - vows; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; धनुर्वेदम् (dhanurvedam) - the science of archery; अवाप्य (avāpya) - attaining; कृत्स्नम् (kṛtsnam) - completely; क्षात्रेण (kṣātreṇa) - by the warrior's; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - duty; वसूनि (vasūni) - wealths; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; सर्वे (sarve) - all; हि (hi) - indeed; अवाप्ताः (avāptāḥ) - have been gained; क्रतवः (kratavaḥ) - sacrifices; पुराणाः (purāṇāḥ) - ancient;]
(Having learned the vows before, by performing, and properly attaining the entire Dhanurveda; having obtained wealth by the warrior's duty; all indeed ancient sacrifices have been gained.)
By previously performing the vows and properly mastering the complete Dhanurveda, and by acquiring wealth through the warrior's duty, indeed all the ancient sacrifices have been achieved. (03-180-17)
न ग्राम्यधर्मेषु रतिस्तवास्ति; कामान्न किञ्चित्कुरुषे नरेन्द्र। न चार्थलोभात्प्रजहासि धर्मं; तस्मात्स्वभावादसि धर्मराजः ॥०३-१८०-१८॥
na grāmyadharmeṣu ratistavāsti; kāmānna kiñcit kuruṣe narendra. na cārthalobhāt prajahāsi dharmaṃ; tasmātsvabhāvād asi dharmarājaḥ ॥03-180-18॥
[न (na) - not; ग्राम्यधर्मेषु (grāmyadharmeṣu) - in base pursuits; रतिः (ratiḥ) - delight; तव (tava) - your; अस्ति (asti) - exists; कामात् (kāmāt) - from desire; न (na) - not; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; कुरुषे (kuruṣe) - you do; नरेन्द्र (narendra) - O king; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अर्थलोभात् (arthalobhāt) - from greed for wealth; प्रजहासि (prajahāsi) - you abandon; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - dharma; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; स्वभावात् (svabhāvāt) - by nature; असि (asi) - you are; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - Dharmaraja;]
(Not in base pursuits delight your exists; from desire not anything you do, O king. Not and from greed for wealth you abandon dharma; therefore by nature you are Dharmaraja. (03-180-18))
You take no delight in base pursuits; from desire you do nothing, O king. Nor do you abandon dharma out of greed for wealth; therefore by your very nature you are Dharmaraja. (03-180-18)
दानं च सत्यं च तपश्च राज; ञ्श्रद्धा च शान्तिश्च धृतिः क्षमा च। अवाप्य राष्ट्राणि वसूनि भोगा; नेषा परा पार्थ सदा रतिस्ते ॥०३-१८०-१९॥
dānaṃ ca satyaṃ ca tapaś ca rāja; śraddhā ca śāntiś ca dhṛtiḥ kṣamā ca. avāpyā rāṣṭrāṇi vasūni bhogā; neṣā parā pārtha sadā ratis te ॥03-180-19॥
[दानं (dānam) - gift; offering; च (ca) - and; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; च (ca) - and; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; penance; च (ca) - and; राज (rāja) - O king; श्रद्धा (śraddhā) - faith; च (ca) - and; शान्ति (śānti) - peace; च (ca) - and; धृतिः (dhṛtiḥ) - fortitude; endurance; क्षमा (kṣamā) - forgiveness; च (ca) - and; अवाप्य (avāpya) - having obtained; having acquired; राष्ट्राणि (rāṣṭrāṇi) - kingdoms; territories; वसूनि (vasūni) - riches; treasures; भोगा (bhogā) - enjoyments; pleasures; न (na) - not; एषा (eṣā) - this; परा (parā) - supreme; highest; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; O Arjuna; सदा (sadā) - always; रतिः (ratiḥ) - delight; attachment; ते (te) - your;]
(Gift and truth and austerity and, O king, faith and peace and fortitude, forgiveness and; having obtained kingdoms, riches, pleasures; not this supreme, O Pārtha, always delight of yours.)
"Charity, truth, austerity, O king, also faith, peace, fortitude, and forgiveness: even after obtaining kingdoms, riches, and enjoyments, O Pārtha, this is not always your supreme delight." (03-180-19)
यदा जनौघः कुरुजाङ्गलानां; कृष्णां सभायामवशामपश्यत्। अपेतधर्मव्यवहारवृत्तं; सहेत तत्पाण्डव कस्त्वदन्यः ॥०३-१८०-२०॥
yadā janaughaḥ kurujāṅgalānāṃ; kṛṣṇāṃ sabhāyām avaśām apaśyat। apeta-dharma-vyavahāra-vṛttaṃ; saheta tat pāṇḍava kas tvadanyaḥ ॥03-180-20॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; जनौघः (janaughaḥ) - multitude of people; कुरुजाङ्गलानां (kurujāṅgalānāṃ) - of the land of Kurujāṅgala; कृष्णां (kṛṣṇām) - dark-complexioned (female); सभायाम् (sabhāyām) - in the assembly; अवशाम् (avaśām) - helpless; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; अपेतधर्मव्यवहारवृत्तं (apeta-dharma-vyavahāra-vṛttam) - devoid of Dharma, propriety, and conduct; सहेत (saheta) - might endure; तत् (tat) - that; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava; कः (kaḥ) - who; त्वदन्यः (tvadanyaḥ) - other than you;]
(When the multitude of people of Kurujāṅgala saw the dark-complexioned (lady) in the assembly, helpless, devoid of Dharma, propriety, and conduct—O Pāṇḍava, who other than you might endure that?)
O Pāṇḍava, when the multitude of Kurujāṅgala beheld the helpless dark-complexioned lady in the assembly, deprived of Dharma and propriety, who other than you could bear that? (03-180-20)
असंशयं सर्वसमृद्धकामः; क्षिप्रं प्रजाः पालयितासि सम्यक्। इमे वयं निग्रहणे कुरूणां; यदि प्रतिज्ञा भवतः समाप्ता ॥०३-१८०-२१॥
asaṁśayaṁ sarvasamṛddhakāmaḥ; kṣipraṁ prajāḥ pālayitāsi samyak. ime vayaṁ nigrahaṇe kurūṇāṁ; yadi pratijñā bhavataḥ samāptā ॥03-180-21॥
[असंशयम् (asaṁśayam) - without doubt; सर्वसमृद्धकामः (sarvasamṛddhakāmaḥ) - desiring all prosperity; क्षिप्रं (kṣipram) - quickly; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - subjects; पालयितासि (pālayitāsi) - you will protect; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; इमे (ime) - these; वयम् (vayam) - we; निग्रहणे (nigrahaṇe) - in restraint; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kuru (clan); यदि (yadi) - if; प्रतिज्ञा (pratijñā) - vow; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - your; समाप्ता (samāptā) - fulfilled;]
(Without doubt, desiring all prosperity, quickly the subjects you will protect properly. These we, in the restraint of the Kurus, if the vow of yours is fulfilled.)
Without doubt, you, who desire all prosperity, will soon protect your subjects properly. As for us, concerning the restraint of the Kurus, if your vow is fulfilled. (03-180-21)
धौम्यं च कृष्णां च युधिष्ठिरं च; यमौ च भीमं च दशार्हसिंहः। उवाच दिष्ट्या भवतां शिवेन; प्राप्तः किरीटी मुदितः कृतास्त्रः ॥०३-१८०-२२॥
dhaumyaṃ ca kṛṣṇāṃ ca yudhiṣṭhiraṃ ca; yamau ca bhīmaṃ ca daśārhasiṃhaḥ। uvāca diṣṭyā bhavatāṃ śivena; prāptaḥ kirīṭī muditaḥ kṛtāstraḥ ॥03-180-22॥
[धौम्यं (dhaumyam) - Dhaumya; (the priest); च (ca) - and; कृष्णां (kṛṣṇām) - Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); च (ca) - and; युधिष्ठिरं (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhiṣṭhira; च (ca) - and; यमौ (yamau) - the two sons of Yama (Nakula and Sahadeva); च (ca) - and; भीमं (bhīmam) - Bhīma; च (ca) - and; दशार्हसिंहः (daśārhasiṃhaḥ) - the lion of the Daśārhas (Kṛṣṇa); उवाच (uvāca) - said; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; भवतां (bhavatām) - of you all; शिवेन (śivena) - by auspiciousness; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - attained; किरीटी (kirīṭī) - Kirīṭī (Arjuna); मुदितः (muditaḥ) - rejoiced; कृतास्त्रः (kṛtāstraḥ) - the one accomplished in weapons;]
(Dhaumya and Kṛṣṇā and Yudhiṣṭhira and the twins and Bhīma and the lion of the Daśārhas (Kṛṣṇa), said: "By fortune, Kirīṭī, accomplished in weapons, rejoiced, attained to you all with auspiciousness." (03-180-22))
The lion of the Daśārhas (Kṛṣṇa) said to Dhaumya, Kṛṣṇā, Yudhiṣṭhira, the twins, and Bhīma: "By good fortune, Kirīṭī, accomplished in weapons, has joyfully come to you all with auspiciousness." (03-180-22)
प्रोवाच कृष्णामपि याज्ञसेनीं; दशार्हभर्ता सहितः सुहृद्भिः। कृष्णे धनुर्वेदरतिप्रधानाः; सत्यव्रतास्ते शिशवः सुशीलाः ॥ सद्भिः सदैवाचरितं समाधिं; चरन्ति पुत्रास्तव याज्ञसेनि ॥०३-१८०-२३॥
provāca kṛṣṇām api yājñasenīṃ; daśārhabhartā sahitaḥ suhṛdbhiḥ। kṛṣṇe dhanurvedaratipradhānāḥ; satyavratās te śiśavaḥ suśīlāḥ॥ sadbhiḥ sadaivācaritaṃ samādhiṃ; caranti putrās tava yājñaseni॥03-180-23॥
[प्रोवाच (provāca) - said; कृष्णामपि (kṛṣṇām api) - Kṛṣṇā also; याज्ञसेनीं (yājñasenīṃ) - Yājñasenī (daughter of Yajñasena, Draupadī); दशार्हभर्ता (daśārhabhartā) - the lord of the Daśārhas (Kṛṣṇa); सहितः (sahitaḥ) - along with; सुहृद्भिः (suhṛdbhiḥ) - with friends; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - O Kṛṣṇā; धनुर्वेदरतिप्रधानाः (dhanurvedaratipradhānāḥ) - chiefly devoted to the science of archery; सत्यव्रताः (satyavratāḥ) - truthful in vows; ते (te) - your; शिशवः (śiśavaḥ) - sons; सुशीलाः (suśīlāḥ) - of good nature; सद्भिः (sadbhiḥ) - by the good; सदैव (sadaiva) - always; आचरितं (ācaritaṃ) - practiced; समाधिं (samādhiṃ) - concentration; meditation; चरन्ति (caranti) - practice; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; तव (tava) - your; याज्ञसेनि (yājñaseni) - O daughter of Yajñasena;]
(He said also to Kṛṣṇā, the Yājñasenī; the lord of the Daśārhas, along with friends. O Kṛṣṇā, your sons, mainly devoted to the science of archery, truthful in vows, of good nature. Your sons, O daughter of Yajñasena, always practice the concentration practiced by the good.)
The lord of the Daśārhas, along with his friends, spoke also to Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) and said: “O daughter of Yajñasena, your sons are chiefly devoted to the science of archery, truthful to their vows, and of good nature. O Yājñasenī, your sons always practice the meditation observed by the virtuous.” (03-180-23)
राज्येन राष्ट्रैश्च निमन्त्र्यमाणाः; पित्रा च कृष्णे तव सोदरैश्च। न यज्ञसेनस्य न मातुलानां; गृहेषु बाला रतिमाप्नुवन्ति ॥०३-१८०-२४॥
rājyena rāṣṭraiś ca nimantryamāṇāḥ; pitrā ca kṛṣṇe tava sodaraiś ca. na yajñasenasya na mātulānāṃ; gṛheṣu bālā ratim āpnuvanti ॥03-180-24॥
[राज्येन (rājyena) - by the kingdom; राष्ट्रैः (rāṣṭraiḥ) - by (the) states; च (ca) - and; निमन्त्र्यमाणाः (nimantryamāṇāḥ) - being invited; पित्रा (pitrā) - by (the) father; च (ca) - and; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - O Kṛṣṇā; तव (tava) - your; सोदरैः (sodaraiḥ) - by (the) brothers; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; यज्ञसेनस्य (yajñasenasya) - of Yajñasena; न (na) - not; मातुलानां (mātulānāṃ) - of (the) maternal uncles; गृहेषु (gṛheṣu) - in (the) houses; बाला (bālā) - young girls; रतिम् (ratim) - pleasure; आप्नुवन्ति (āpnuvanti) - obtain;]
(By the kingdom, and by the states, being invited; by (their) father and, O Kṛṣṇā, by your brothers; not of Yajñasena nor of the maternal uncles; in the houses, young girls obtain pleasure.)
Though being invited by the kingdom, states, the father, you, O Kṛṣṇā, and your brothers, yet neither in Yajñasena’s nor in the maternal uncles’ houses do the young girls find pleasure. (03-180-24)
आनर्तमेवाभिमुखाः शिवेन; गत्वा धनुर्वेदरतिप्रधानाः। तवात्मजा वृष्णिपुरं प्रविश्य; न दैवतेभ्यः स्पृहयन्ति कृष्णे ॥०३-१८०-२५॥
ānartam evābhimukhāḥ śivena; gatvā dhanurvedaratipradhānāḥ. tavātmajā vṛṣṇipuraṃ praviśya; na daivatebhyaḥ spṛhayanti kṛṣṇe ॥03-180-25॥
[आनर्तम् (ānartam) - Anarta (a place name); एव (eva) - indeed; only; अभिमुखाः (abhimukhāḥ) - facing towards; शिवेन (śivena) - with auspiciousness; by Śiva; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; धनुर्वेदरति-प्रधानाः (dhanurvedarati-pradhānāḥ) - chiefly devoted to the science of archery; तवात्मजाः (tavātmajāḥ) - your sons; वृष्णिपुरम् (vṛṣṇipuram) - the city of the Vṛṣṇis; प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; न (na) - not; दैवतेभ्यः (daivatebhyaḥ) - to the deities; स्पृहयन्ति (spṛhayanti) - they desire; they long for; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - in Kṛṣṇa; with reference to Kṛṣṇa;]
(To Anarta alone facing, with auspiciousness; having gone, chiefly devoted to the science of archery. Your sons, having entered the city of the Vṛṣṇis, do not desire after the deities in Kṛṣṇa.)
Facing only Anarta with auspiciousness, having gone, chiefly devoted to archery, your sons, after entering the city of the Vṛṣṇis, do not long for the deities when Kṛṣṇa is present. (03-180-25)
यथा त्वमेवार्हसि तेषु वृत्तिं; प्रयोक्तुमार्या च यथैव कुन्ती। तेष्वप्रमादेन सदा करोति; तथा च भूयश्च तथा सुभद्रा ॥०३-१८०-२६॥
yathā tvam evārhasi teṣu vṛttiṃ; prayoktum āryā ca yathaiva kuntī। teṣv apramādena sadā karoti; tathā ca bhūyaś ca tathā subhadrā ॥03-180-26॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एव (eva) - indeed; अर्हसि (arhasi) - are worthy; तेषु (teṣu) - towards them; वृत्तिं (vṛttiṃ) - conduct; प्रयोक्तुम् (prayoktum) - to employ; आर्या (āryā) - noble lady; च (ca) - and; यथा (yathā) - just as; एव (eva) - indeed; कुन्ती (kuntī) - Kuntī; तेषु (teṣu) - towards them; अप्रमादेन (apramādena) - with diligence; सदा (sadā) - always; करोति (karoti) - does; तथा (tathā) - so; च (ca) - and; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - further; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - so; सुभद्रा (subhadrā) - Subhadrā;]
(As you indeed are worthy to employ conduct towards them, and as just as Kuntī (does), towards them always with diligence she does so, and so further so Subhadrā.)
Just as you are worthy to behave towards them, and just as noble Kuntī always acts towards them with diligence, so, and even more so, does Subhadrā. (03-180-26)
यथानिरुद्धस्य यथाभिमन्यो; र्यथा सुनीथस्य यथैव भानोः। तथा विनेता च गतिश्च कृष्णे; तवात्मजानामपि रौक्मिणेयः ॥०३-१८०-२७॥
yathāniruddhasya yathābhimanyuḥ; yathā sunīthasya yathaiva bhānoḥ। tathā vinetā ca gatiśca kṛṣṇe; tavātmajānām api raukmiṇeyaḥ ॥03-180-27॥
[यथा (yathā) (yathā) - just as; अनिरुद्धस्य (aniruddhasya) (aniruddhasya) - of Aniruddha; यथा (yathā) (yathā) - just as; अभिमन्युः (abhimanyuḥ) (abhimanyuḥ) - Abhimanyu; यथा (yathā) (yathā) - just as; सुनीथस्य (sunīthasya) (sunīthasya) - of Sunītha; यथा (yathā) (yathā) - just as; एव (eva) (eva) - indeed; भानोः (bhānoḥ) (bhānoḥ) - of Bhānu; तथा (tathā) (tathā) - in the same way; विनेता (vinetā) (vinetā) - the guide; च (ca) (ca) - and; गतिः (gatiḥ) (gatiḥ) - movement; च (ca) (ca) - and; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) (kṛṣṇe) - in Kṛṣṇa; तव (tava) (tava) - your; आत्मजानाम् (ātmajānām) (ātmajānām) - of the sons; अपि (api) (api) - also; रौक्मिणेयः (raukmiṇeyaḥ) (raukmiṇeyaḥ) - son of Rukmiṇī;]
(Just as of Aniruddha, just as Abhimanyu, just as of Sunītha, just as indeed of Bhānu, so the guide and the movement in Kṛṣṇa, of your sons also, the son of Rukmiṇī.)
Just as Aniruddha, Abhimanyu, Sunītha, and Bhānu were guided and moved by Kṛṣṇa, so also is the son of Rukmiṇī a guide and support for your sons. (03-180-27)
गदासिचर्मग्रहणेषु शूरा; नस्त्रेषु शिक्षासु रथाश्वयाने। सम्यग्विनेता विनयत्यतन्द्री; स्तांश्चाभिमन्युः सततं कुमारः ॥०३-१८०-२८॥
gadāsicarmagrahaṇeṣu śūrā; nastriṣu śikṣāsu rathāśvayāne। samyagvinetā vinayatyatandrī;stāṃścābhimanyuḥ satataṃ kumāraḥ ॥03-180-28॥
[गदा (gadā) - mace; असि (asi) - sword; चर्म (carma) - armor; ग्रहणेषु (grahaṇeṣu) - in handling; शूरा (śūrā) - brave; नस्त्रेषु (nastriṣu) - in missile-weapons; शिक्षासु (śikṣāsu) - in trainings; रथ (ratha) - chariot; अश्व (aśva) - horse; याने (yāne) - in driving; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; विनेता (vinetā) - leader; विनयति (vinayati) - teaches; अतन्द्री (atandrī) - diligent; स्तान् (stān) - them; च (ca) - and; अभिमन्युः (abhimanyuḥ) - Abhimanyu; सततं (satataṃ) - always; कुमारः (kumāraḥ) - the prince;]
(In mace, sword, and armor handling, brave; in missile-weapons, in trainings, chariot, horse driving, properly leader teaches diligent; them and Abhimanyu always the prince.)
The prince Abhimanyu always diligently instructs those who are brave in handling mace, sword, and armor; skilled in missile-weapons, training, chariot and horse driving; and leads them properly. (03-180-28)
स चापि सम्यक्प्रणिधाय शिक्षा; मस्त्राणि चैषां गुरुवत्प्रदाय। तवात्मजानां च तथाभिमन्योः; पराक्रमैस्तुष्यति रौक्मिणेयः ॥०३-१८०-२९॥
sa cāpi samyak-praṇidhāya śikṣā; mastrāṇi caiṣāṃ guruvat-pradāya. tavātmajānāṃ ca tathābhimanyoḥ; parākramais tuṣyati raukmiṇe yaḥ ॥03-180-29॥
[स (sa) - he; चापि (cāpi) - and indeed; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; प्रणिधाय (praṇidhāya) - after applying; शिक्षा (śikṣā) - instruction; मस्त्राणि (mastrāṇi) - weapons; च (ca) - and; एषाम् (eṣām) - to these (boys); गुरुवत् (guruvat) - like a teacher; प्रदाय (pradāya) - having imparted; तवात्मजानाम् (tavātmajānām) - of your sons; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - also; अभिमन्युः (abhimanyuḥ) - of Abhimanyu; पराक्रमैः (parākramaiḥ) - with valorous deeds; तुष्यति (tuṣyati) - is pleased; रौक्मिणेयः (raukmiṇeyaḥ) - the son of Rukmiṇī;]
(He, and indeed, after properly applying instruction and having imparted weapons to these (boys) like a teacher, with the valorous deeds of your sons and also of Abhimanyu, is pleased, the son of Rukmiṇī (Raukmiṇeyaḥ).)
He, having properly instructed and imparted weapon skills to these like a true teacher, is pleased by the valorous deeds of your sons and also of Abhimanyu, the son of Rukmiṇī. (03-180-29)
यदा विहारं प्रसमीक्षमाणाः; प्रयान्ति पुत्रास्तव याज्ञसेनि। एकैकमेषामनुयान्ति तत्र; रथाश्च यानानि च दन्तिनश्च ॥०३-१८०-३०॥
yadā vihāraṃ prasamīkṣamāṇāḥ; prayānti putrās tava yājñaseni. ekaikam eṣām anuyānti tatra; rathāś ca yānāni ca dantinaś ca ॥03-180-30॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; विहारम् (vihāram) - pleasure-garden; excursion; प्रसमीक्षमाणाः (prasamīkṣamāṇāḥ) - observing carefully; प्रयान्ति (prayānti) - go; proceed; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; तव (tava) - your; याज्ञसेनि (yājñaseni) - O Yājñaseni; एकैकम् (ekaikam) - each and every one; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; अनुयान्ति (anuyānti) - follow; तत्र (tatra) - there; रथाः (rathāḥ) - chariots; चानि (ca yānāni) - and vehicles; दन्तिनश्च (dantinaś ca) - and elephants;]
(When, observing the excursion, your sons, O Yājñaseni, go, each and every one of these, there, chariots and vehicles and elephants follow.)
O Yājñaseni, when your sons go out observing the pleasure-garden, there, chariots, vehicles, and elephants follow each of them. (03-180-30)
अथाब्रवीद्धर्मराजं तु कृष्णो; दशार्हयोधाः कुकुरान्धकाश्च। एते निदेशं तव पालयन्ति; तिष्ठन्ति यत्रेच्छसि तत्र राजन् ॥०३-१८०-३१॥
athābravīddharmarājaṃ tu kṛṣṇo; daśārhayodhāḥ kukurāndhakāśca. ete nideśaṃ tava pālayanti; tiṣṭhanti yatrecchasi tatra rājan ॥03-180-31॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; धर्मराजं (dharmarājam) - Dharmarāja (King of Dharma, Yudhiṣṭhira); तु (tu) - but; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; दशार्ह-योधाः (daśārha-yodhāḥ) - warriors of the Dāśārha (Yādava) clan; कुकुर-अन्धकाः (kukura-andhakāḥ) - the Kukura and Andhaka clans; च (ca) - and; एते (ete) - these; निदेशं (nideśam) - command; तव (tava) - your; पालयन्ति (pālayanti) - observe; तिष्ठन्ति (tiṣṭhanti) - stand; यत्र (yatra) - where; इच्छसि (icchasi) - you desire; तत्र (tatra) - there; राजन् (rājan) - O king;]
(Then Kṛṣṇa said to Dharmarāja, but: the warriors of the Dāśārha clan, and the Kukura and Andhakas, these observe your command; stand where you desire, there, O king.)
Then Kṛṣṇa said to Dharmarāja: "The warriors of the Dāśārha clan, and the Kukura and Andhaka clans—these follow your command and stand wherever you wish, O king." (03-180-31)
आवर्ततां कार्मुकवेगवाता; हलायुधप्रग्रहणा मधूनाम्। सेना तवार्थेषु नरेन्द्र यत्ता; ससादिपत्त्यश्वरथा सनागा ॥०३-१८०-३२॥
āvartatāṃ kārmukavegavātā; halāyudhapragrahāṇā madhūnām। senā tavārtheṣu narendra yattā; sa-sādipattyaśvarathā sa-nāgā ॥03-180-32॥

कामं तथा तिष्ठ नरेन्द्र तस्मि; न्यथा कृतस्ते समयः सभायाम्। दाशार्हयोधैस्तु ससादियोधं; प्रतीक्षतां नागपुरं भवन्तम् ॥०३-१८०-३४॥

(As you wish, remain thus, O king, in that way as your agreement was made in the assembly. Let the Dāśārha warriors and the Sādi warriors wait for you at the Naga city.)

व्यपेतमन्युर्व्यपनीतपाप्मा; विहृत्य यत्रेच्छसि तत्र कामम्। ततः समृद्धं प्रथमं विशोकः; प्रपत्स्यसे नागपुरं सराष्ट्रम् ॥०३-१८०-३५॥
vyapetamanyur vyapanītapāpmā; vihṛtya yatrecchasi tatra kāmam. tataḥ samṛddhaṁ prathamaṁ viśokaḥ; prapatsyase nāgapuraṁ sarāṣṭram ॥03-180-35॥

(One whose anger is removed, whose sin is driven away, enjoying where you desire there at will. Then prosperous, first, free from sorrow, you will reach Nāgapura with its territory.)
With your anger gone and sins dispelled, live as you wish wherever you desire. Then, being prosperous and free from sorrow, you will first reach Nāgapura along with its territory. (03-180-35)
ततस्तदाज्ञाय मतं महात्मा; यथावदुक्तं पुरुषोत्तमेन। प्रशस्य विप्रेक्ष्य च धर्मराजः; कृताञ्जलिः केशवमित्युवाच ॥०३-१८०-३६॥

(Then, having understood that opinion, the great-souled one, what was properly spoken by the best of men; having praised and having considered, the king of righteousness with joined palms thus said to Keśava.)
Then, understanding that opinion as spoken properly by the best of men, the great-souled king of righteousness, after praising and reflecting, with joined palms said thus to Keśava. (03-180-36)
असंशयं केशव पाण्डवानां; भवान्गतिस्त्वच्छरणा हि पार्थाः। कालोदये तच्च ततश्च भूयः; कर्ता भवान्कर्म न संशयोऽस्ति ॥०३-१८०-३७॥
asaṁśayaṁ keśava pāṇḍavānāṁ; bhavāṅgatistvaccharaṇā hi pārthāḥ. kālodaye tacca tataśca bhūyaḥ; kartā bhavānkarman na saṁśayo'sti ॥03-180-37॥
[असंशयं (asaṁśayam) - without doubt; केशव (keśava) - Keśava (O Kṛṣṇa, slayer of the demon Keśi); पाण्डवानां (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; भवान् (bhavān) - you; गतिः (gatiḥ) - refuge; त्वच्छरणा (tvaccharaṇā) - at your feet; हि (hi) - indeed; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - the sons of Pṛthā (the Pāṇḍavas); कालोदये (kālodaye) - at the rising of time (when the time comes); तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; ततः (tataḥ) - then; च (ca) - and; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; कर्ता (kartā) - doer; भवान् (bhavān) - you; कर्म (karman) - the action; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt; अस्ति (asti) - there is;]
(Without doubt, O Keśava, you are the refuge of the Pāṇḍavas; indeed, the sons of Pṛthā have your feet as their resort. At the rising of time, that and then again, you are the doer of the action; there is no doubt.)
Without a doubt, O Keśava, you are the refuge of the Pāṇḍavas; truly, the sons of Pṛthā have taken shelter at your feet. When the right time comes, again and again, you alone perform the actions; there is no doubt about this. (3-180-37)
यथाप्रतिज्ञं विहृतश्च कालः; सर्वाः समा द्वादश निर्जनेषु। अज्ञातचर्यां विधिवत्समाप्य; भवद्गताः केशव पाण्डवेयाः ॥०३-१८०-३८॥

(As the promise, the time has been spent; all twelve years in deserted places. Having completed the incognito-period duly, to you have come, Keśava, the sons of Pandu.)
According to the vow, the time has been spent; all twelve years were passed in deserted places. Having properly completed the period of incognito, the sons of Pandu, Keśava, have come to you. (03-180-38)

(Thus speaks to Vārṣṇeya, to Dharmarāja and O Bhārata. Then afterwards, grown in austerity, holder of many thousands of years, the righteous-souled, Mārkaṇḍeya of great austerity, was seen.)
Thus, O Bhārata, while speaking to Vārṣṇeya and Dharmarāja, then, after that, the highly austere, long-lived sage Mārkaṇḍeya, possessed of great austerity and righteousness, appeared. (03-180-39)
तमागतमृषिं वृद्धं बहुवर्षसहस्रिणम्। आनर्चुर्ब्राह्मणाः सर्वे कृष्णश्च सह पाण्डवैः ॥०३-१८०-४०॥
tam āgatam ṛṣiṁ vṛddhaṁ bahu-varṣa-sahasriṇam। ānarcur brāhmaṇāḥ sarve kṛṣṇaś ca saha pāṇḍavaiḥ ॥03-180-40॥

(Him, having arrived, the sage, old, of many thousands of years, worshipped the Brahmins all, Kṛṣṇa also together with the Pāṇḍavas.)
All the Brahmins, as well as Kṛṣṇa together with the Pāṇḍavas, worshipped that aged sage who had lived for many thousands of years. (03-180-40)
तमर्चितं सुविष्वस्तमासीनमृषिसत्तमम्। ब्राह्मणानां मतेनाह पाण्डवानां च केशवः ॥०३-१८०-४१॥
tam arcitaṃ suviṣvastam āsīnam ṛṣi-sattamam। brāhmaṇānāṃ matena āha pāṇḍavānāṃ ca keśavaḥ ॥03-180-41॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अर्चितम् (arcitam) - honored; सुविष्वस्तम् (suviṣvastam) - perfectly composed; आसीनम् (āsīnam) - seated; ऋषिसत्तमम् (ṛṣi-sattamam) - best among sages; ब्राह्मणानाम् (brāhmaṇānām) - of the Brāhmaṇas; मतेन (matena) - by the opinion; आह (āha) - spoke; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; च (ca) - and; केशवः (keśavaḥ) - Keśava (Kṛṣṇa);]
(Him, honored, perfectly composed, seated, best among sages; by the opinion of the Brāhmaṇas and of the Pāṇḍavas, Keśava spoke.)
Keśava (Kṛṣṇa), honoring him, the perfectly composed and seated best among sages, spoke by the decision of the Brāhmaṇas and the Pāṇḍavas. (03-180-41)
शुश्रूषवः पाण्डवास्ते ब्राह्मणाश्च समागताः। द्रौपदी सत्यभामा च तथाहं परमं वचः ॥०३-१८०-४२॥
śuśrūṣavaḥ pāṇḍavās te brāhmaṇāś ca samāgatāḥ। draupadī satyabhāmā ca tathāhaṃ paramaṃ vacaḥ॥03-180-42॥

(Eager to serve, those Pāṇḍavas, and the brāhmaṇas assembled; Draupadī, Satyabhāmā and likewise I, supreme speech.)
The Pāṇḍavas eager to serve, the assembled brāhmaṇas, Draupadī, Satyabhāmā and I, all heard the supreme speech. (03-180-42)
पुरावृत्ताः कथाः पुण्याः सदाचाराः सनातनाः। राज्ञां स्त्रीणामृषीणां च मार्कण्डेय विचक्ष्व नः ॥०३-१८०-४३॥

तेषु तत्रोपविष्टेषु देवर्षिरपि नारदः। आजगाम विशुद्धात्मा पाण्डवानवलोककः ॥०३-१८०-४४॥
teṣu tatropaviṣṭeṣu devarṣir api nāradaḥ। ājagāma viśuddhātmā pāṇḍavān avalokakaḥ॥03-180-44॥
[तेषु (teṣu) - among them; तत्र (tatra) - there; उपविष्टेषु (upaviṣṭeṣu) - when seated; देवर्षिः (devarṣiḥ) - the divine sage; अपि (api) - also; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; आजगाम (ājagāma) - came; विशुद्धात्मा (viśuddhātmā) - with pure soul; पाण्डवानवलोककः (pāṇḍavān avalokakaḥ) - one who observes the Pāṇḍavas;]
(Among them, there, when (they were) seated, the divine sage also Nārada, came, with pure soul, one who observes the Pāṇḍavas.)
While they were seated there among themselves, the divine sage Nārada, pure in soul and an observer of the Pāṇḍavas, also came. (03-180-44)
तमप्यथ महात्मानं सर्वे तु पुरुषर्षभाः। पाद्यार्घ्याभ्यां यथान्यायमुपतस्थुर्मनीषिणम् ॥०३-१८०-४५॥
tam apy atha mahātmānaṃ sarve tu puruṣarṣabhāḥ । pādyārghyābhyāṃ yathā-nyāyam upatasthur manīṣiṇam ॥03-180-45॥

(Him also then, the great-souled one, all but bulls among men with water for the feet and arghya, according to propriety, waited upon the wise one.)

नारदस्त्वथ देवर्षिर्ज्ञात्वा तांस्तु कृतक्षणान्। मार्कण्डेयस्य वदतस्तां कथामन्वमोदत ॥०३-१८०-४६॥
nāradastvatha devarṣirjñātvā tāṁstu kṛtakṣaṇān। mārkaṇḍeyasya vadatastāṁ kathāmanvamodata ॥03-180-46॥

(Nārada, but then the divine sage, having known those indeed who had taken the opportunity, of Mārkaṇḍeya speaking that story, rejoiced.)
But then, the divine sage Nārada, having recognized those who had acted at the right moment, took delight as Mārkaṇḍeya spoke that story. (03-180-46)
उवाच चैनं कालज्ञः स्मयन्निव स नारदः। ब्रह्मर्षे कथ्यतां यत्ते पाण्डवेषु विवक्षितम् ॥०३-१८०-४७॥

(He, the knower of time, Nārada, as if smiling, indeed said to him: “O brāhmaṇa sage, let that which by you about the Pāṇḍavas is intended to be spoken be told.”)
Nārada, the knower of time, as if smiling, said to him: “O brāhmaṇa sage, tell what you intend to say regarding the Pāṇḍavas.” (03-180-47)
एवमुक्तः प्रत्युवाच मार्कण्डेयो महातपाः। क्षणं कुरुध्वं विपुलमाख्यातव्यं भविष्यति ॥०३-१८०-४८॥
