मार्कण्डेय उवाच॥

Mārkaṇḍeya said.
ब्रह्मणो यस्तृतीयस्तु पुत्रः कुरुकुलोद्वह। तस्यापवसुता भार्या प्रजास्तस्यापि मे शृणु ॥०३-२०८-१॥
brahmaṇo yas tṛtīyas tu putraḥ kurukulodvaha। tasyāpa-vasutā bhāryā prajās tasyāpi me śṛṇu॥03-208-1॥
[ब्रह्मणः (brahmaṇaḥ) - of Brahmā; यः (yaḥ) - who; तृतीयः (tṛtīyaḥ) - third; तु (tu) - however; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; कुरुकुलोद्वह (kurukulodvaha) - O foremost of the Kuru lineage; तस्य (tasya) - his; अपवसुता (apavasutā) - Apavasu's daughter; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - children; तस्यापि (tasyāpi) - of her also; मे (me) - to me; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear;]
(Of Brahmā, who (was) the third, however, (the) son, O foremost of the Kuru lineage, his wife (was) Apavasu's daughter. The children of her also, to me hear.)
O foremost of the Kuru lineage, the third son of Brahmā — his wife was Apavasu's daughter. Hear from me also of her children. (03-208-1)
बृहज्ज्योतिर्बृहत्कीर्तिर्बृहद्ब्रह्मा बृहन्मनाः। बृहन्मन्त्रो बृहद्भासस्तथा राजन्बृहस्पतिः ॥०३-२०८-२॥
bṛhajjyoitirbṛhatkīrtirbṛhadbrahmā bṛhanmanāḥ। bṛhanmantro bṛhadbhāsastathā rājanbṛhaspatiḥ॥03-208-2॥
[बृहज्ज्योतिः (bṛhaj-jyotiḥ) - great light; बृहत्कीर्तिः (bṛhat-kīrtiḥ) - great fame; बृहद्ब्रह्मा (bṛhad-brahmā) - great Brahman; बृहन्मनाः (bṛhan-manāḥ) - having a great mind; बृहन्मन्त्रः (bṛhan-mantraḥ) - great mantra; बृहद्भासः (bṛhad-bhāsaḥ) - of great radiance; तथा (tathā) - thus; likewise; राजन् (rājan) - O king; बृहस्पतिः (bṛhaspatiḥ) - Bṛhaspati;]
(Great light; great fame; great Brahman; having a great mind; great mantra; of great radiance; thus, O king, Bṛhaspati.)
O king, Bṛhaspati is called great light, great fame, great Brahman, of great mind, great mantra, and of great radiance. (03-208-2)
प्रजासु तासु सर्वासु रूपेणाप्रतिमाभवत्। देवी भानुमती नाम प्रथमाङ्गिरसः सुता ॥०३-२०८-३॥
prajāsu tāsu sarvāsu rūpeṇāpratimābhavat। devī bhānumatī nāma prathamāṅgirrasaḥ sutā॥03-208-3॥

(Among the beings, among those, among all, by beauty unrivaled she became. The goddess, Bhānumatī by name, daughter of Prathama Aṅgiras.)

भूतानामेव सर्वेषां यस्यां रागस्तदाभवत्। रागाद्रागेति यामाहुर्द्वितीयाङ्गिरसः सुता ॥०३-२०८-४॥
bhūtānāmeva sarveṣāṃ yasyāṃ rāgastadābhavat। rāgādrāgeti yāmāhurdvitīyāṅgirasaḥ sutā ॥03-208-4॥
[भूतानामेव (bhūtānām eva) - of beings indeed; सर्वेषां (sarveṣām) - of all; यस्यां (yasyām) - in whom; रागः (rāgaḥ) - attachment; passion; तदा (tadā) - then; अभवत् (abhavat) - arose; was; रागात् (rāgāt) - from attachment; रागः (rāgaḥ) - attachment; passion; इति (iti) - thus; याम् (yām) - whom; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; द्वितीया (dvitīyā) - the second; second daughter; अङ्गिरसः (aṅgirasaḥ) - of Aṅgiras; सुता (sutā) - daughter;]
(Of all beings indeed, in whom attachment then arose; from attachment (is) 'Rāgā', thus whom they say, the second Aṅgiras's daughter.)
Attachment then arose among all beings in her; because of this attachment, she is called 'Rāgā', whom they call the second daughter of Aṅgiras. (03-208-4)
यां कपर्दिसुतामाहुर्दृश्यादृश्येति देहिनः। तनुत्वात्सा सिनीवाली तृतीयाङ्गिरसः सुता ॥०३-२०८-५॥
yāṃ kapardisutām āhur dṛśyādṛśyeti dehinaḥ। tanutvāt sā sinīvālī tṛtīyāṅgirasaḥ sutā ॥03-208-5॥
[याम् (yām) - whom; कपर्दिसुताम् (kapardisutām) - Kāparda's daughter; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they call; दृश्य-अदृश्य-इति (dṛśya-adṛśya-iti) - 'visible-invisible' thus; देहिनः (dehinaḥ) - embodied beings; तनुत्वात् (tanutvāt) - due to thinness; सा (sā) - she; सिनीवाली (sinīvālī) - Sinīvālī; तृतीयाङ्गिरसः (tṛtīyāṅgirasaḥ) - third of Angiras; सुता (sutā) - daughter;]
(Whom (they) call Kāparda's daughter, 'visible-invisible,' embodied beings; due to thinness, she (is) Sinīvālī, the third daughter of Angiras.)

पश्यत्यर्चिष्मती भाभिर्हविर्भिश्च हविष्मती। षष्ठीमङ्गिरसः कन्यां पुण्यामाहुर्हविष्मतीम् ॥०३-२०८-६॥
paśyaty arciṣmatī bhābhir havirbhiś ca haviṣmatī। ṣaṣṭhīm aṅgirasaḥ kanyāṃ puṇyām āhur haviṣmatīm ॥03-208-6॥
[पश्यति (paśyati) - sees; अर्चिष्मती (arciṣmatī) - radiant (feminine); भाभिः (bhābhiḥ) - by radiances; हविर्भिश्च (havirbhiś ca) - and by oblations; हविष्मती (haviṣmatī) - possessing offerings (feminine); षष्ठीम् (ṣaṣṭhīm) - the sixth; अङ्गिरसः (aṅgirasaḥ) - of the Angirases; कन्यां (kanyāṃ) - maiden; पुण्याम् (puṇyām) - auspicious; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they call; हविष्मतीम् (haviṣmatīm) - Haviṣmatī (proper name of a girl);]
(Sees (the) radiant one by radiances and by oblations (the) offering-possessing one; (the) sixth of the Angirases, (the) auspicious maiden, they call Haviṣmatī.)
She, radiant with brightness and oblations, the sixth auspicious maiden of the Angirases, is called Haviṣmatī. (03-208-6)
महामखेष्वाङ्गिरसी दीप्तिमत्सु महामती। महामतीति विख्याता सप्तमी कथ्यते सुता ॥०३-२०८-७॥
mahāmakheṣvāṅgirasī dīptimatsu mahāmatī। mahāmatīti vikhyātā saptamī kathyate sutā ॥03-208-7॥

यां तु दृष्ट्वा भगवतीं जनः कुहुकुहायते। एकानंशेति यामाहुः कुहूमङ्गिरसः सुताम् ॥०३-२०८-८॥
yāṃ tu dṛṣṭvā bhagavatīṃ janaḥ kuhukuḥāyate। ekānaṃśeti yām āhuḥ kuhū maṅgirasaḥ sutām॥03-208-8॥
[याम् (yām) - whom; तु (tu) - but; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; भगवतीम् (bhagavatīm) - the divine (goddess); जनः (janaḥ) - person; कुहुकुहायते (kuhukuḥāyate) - is bewildered; एकानंशेति (ekānaṃśeti) - as 'Ekānanshā' (one non-part); याम् (yām) - whom; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they call; कुहूम् (kuhūm) - Kuhū; अङ्गिरसः (aṅgirasaḥ) - Aṅgiras; सुताम् (sutām) - daughter;]
(But whom, having seen the divine (goddess), the person is bewildered; whom they call 'Ekānanshā', Kuhū, the daughter of Aṅgiras.)
But seeing that goddess, a person becomes bewildered; her whom they call 'Ekānanshā'—she is called Kuhū, the daughter of Aṅgiras. (03-208-8)
