बृहस्पतेश्चान्द्रमसी भार्याभूद्या यशस्विनी। अग्नीन्साजनयत्पुण्यान्षडेकां चापि पुत्रिकाम् ॥०३-२०९-१॥
bṛhaspateścāndramasī bhāryābhūd yā yaśasvinī। agnīn sa ajanayat puṇyān ṣaḍ ekāṃ ca api putrikām॥03-209-1॥

आहुतिष्वेव यस्याग्नेर्हविषाज्यं विधीयते। सोऽग्निर्बृहस्पतेः पुत्रः शंयुर्नाम महाप्रभः ॥०३-२०९-२॥
āhutiṣveva yasyāgner haviṣājyaṃ vidhīyate। so'gnir bṛhaspateḥ putraḥ śaṃyur nāma mahāprabhaḥ॥03-209-2॥

चातुर्मास्येषु यस्येष्ट्यामश्वमेधेऽग्रजः पशुः। दीप्तो ज्वालैरनेकाभैरग्निरेकोऽथ वीर्यवान् ॥०३-२०९-३॥
cāturmāsyeṣu yasyēṣṭyām aśvamedhē'grajaḥ paśuḥ। dīptō jvālair anēkābhair agnir ēkō'tha vīryavān ॥03-209-3॥

Pratimā, the wife of Śaṃyu, was Satyā—truthful and born of Dharma. Agni, his son, was bright, and he had three daughters who were devoted to good vows. (03-209-4)
प्रथमेनाज्यभागेन पूज्यते योऽग्निरध्वरे। अग्निस्तस्य भरद्वाजः प्रथमः पुत्र उच्यते ॥०३-२०९-५॥
prathamenājyabhāgena pūjyate yo'gniradhvare। agnistasya bharadvājaḥ prathamaḥ putra ucyate ॥03-209-5॥

पौर्णमास्येषु सर्वेषु हविषाज्यं स्रुवोद्यतम्। भरतो नामतः सोऽग्निर्द्वितीयः शंयुतः सुतः ॥०३-२०९-६॥
paurṇamāsyeṣu sarveṣu haviṣājyaṃ sruvodhyatam। bharato nāmataḥ so'gnir dvitīyaḥ śaṃyutaḥ sutaḥ॥03-209-6॥

तिस्रः कन्या भवन्त्यन्या यासां स भरतः पतिः। भरतस्तु सुतस्तस्य भरत्येका च पुत्रिका ॥०३-२०९-७॥
tisraḥ kanyā bhavanty anyā yāsāṃ sa bharataḥ patiḥ। bharatas tu sutas tasya bharaty ekā ca putrikā॥03-209-7॥

भरतो भरतस्याग्नेः पावकस्तु प्रजापतेः। महानत्यर्थमहितस्तथा भरतसत्तम ॥०३-२०९-८॥
bharato bharatasyaagneḥ pāvakastu prajāpateḥ. mahānat-yartham-ahitastathā bharatasattama ॥03-209-8॥

Bharata is born of Agni, who is called Bharata; Pāvaka, however, is of Prajāpati; thus, O best of the Bharatas, the great one is established exceedingly. (03-209-8)
भरद्वाजस्य भार्या तु वीरा वीरश्च पिण्डदः। प्राहुराज्येन तस्येज्यां सोमस्येव द्विजाः शनैः ॥०३-२०९-९॥
bharadvājasya bhāryā tu vīrā vīraś ca piṇḍadaḥ। prāhur ājyena tasy ejyāṃ somasya iva dvijāḥ śanaiḥ ॥03-209-9॥
[भरद्वाजस्य (bharadvājasya) - of Bharadvāja; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; तु (tu) - but; वीरा (vīrā) - Vīrā; वीरः (vīraḥ) - Vīra; च (ca) - and; पिण्डदः (piṇḍadaḥ) - food-offerer; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - (they) say; आज्येन (ājyena) - with clarified butter; तस्य (tasya) - his; इज्याम् (ejyām) - worship; सोमस्य (somasya) - of Soma; इव (iva) - like; द्विजाः (dvijāḥ) - twice-born (Brahmins); शनैः (śanaiḥ) - gradually;]
(Of Bharadvāja (the) wife but (was) Vīrā and Vīra, (the) food-offerer, (they) say; with clarified butter his worship like (the) worship of Soma twice-born (Brahmins) gradually.)
Bharadvāja's wife was Vīrā, and their son Vīra, who offered funeral offerings, are said by the twice-born to have worshipped him with clarified butter, gradually, just as Soma is worshipped. (03-209-9)
हविषा यो द्वितीयेन सोमेन सह युज्यते। रथप्रभू रथध्वानः कुम्भरेताः स उच्यते ॥०३-२०९-१०॥
haviṣā yo dvitīyena somena saha yujyate। rathaprabhū rathadhvānaḥ kumbharetāḥ sa ucyate॥03-209-10॥
[हविषा (haviṣā) - with the oblation; यः (yaḥ) - who; द्वितीयेन (dvitīyena) - with the second; सोमेन (somena) - with Soma; सह (saha) - together with; युज्यते (yujyate) - is joined; रथप्रभू (rathaprabhū) - masters of chariots; रथध्वानः (rathadhvānaḥ) - chariot-sound; कुम्भरेताः (kumbharetāḥ) - having a pot as the seed; सः (saḥ) - he; उच्यते (ucyate) - is called;]
(With the oblation, who with the second (one), with Soma, together is joined, masters of chariots, chariot-sound, having a pot as the seed, he is called.)
He who is joined with the oblation, with the second Soma, together—who is the lord of chariots, possessing the sound of chariots, and whose seed is in a pot—he is called thus. (03-209-10)
सरय्वां जनयत्सिद्धिं भानुं भाभिः समावृणोत्। आग्नेयमानयन्नित्यमाह्वानेष्वेष कथ्यते ॥०३-२०९-११॥
sarayvāṃ janayat siddhiṃ bhānuṃ bhābhiḥ samāvṛṇot। āgneyam ānayan nityam āhvāneṣu eṣa kathyate॥03-209-11॥
[सरय्वां (sarayvāṃ) - in Sarayu (the river); जनयत् (janayat) - causing to be born; सिद्धिं (siddhiṃ) - success; accomplishment; भानुं (bhānuṃ) - the sun; radiance; भाभिः (bhābhiḥ) - with lights; with rays; समावृणोत् (samāvṛṇot) - he covered; he enveloped; आग्नेयम् (āgneyam) - of Agni; related to fire; आनयन् (ānayan) - bringing; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; continually; आह्वानेषु (āhvāneṣu) - in invocations; एष (eṣa) - this; he; कथ्यते (kathyate) - is said; is spoken;]
(In Sarayu, causing success to be born, with lights he covered the sun; always bringing that which belongs to Agni in invocations, this is said.)
It is said that in the river Sarayu, he, always bringing what pertains to Agni at the invocations, generated success, and covered the sun with his rays. (03-209-11)
यस्तु न च्यवते नित्यं यशसा वर्चसा श्रिया। अग्निर्निश्च्यवनो नाम पृथिवीं स्तौति केवलम् ॥०३-२०९-१२॥
yastu na cyavate nityaṃ yaśasā varcasā śriyā। agnirniścyavano nāma pṛthivīṃ stauti kevalam ॥03-209-12॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; न (na) - not; چ्यवते (cyavate) - falls; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; यशसा (yaśasā) - by fame; वर्चसा (varcasā) - by brilliance; श्रिया (śriyā) - by prosperity; अग्निः (agniḥ) - Agni (the fire); निश्च्यवनः (niścyavanaḥ) - named Niścyavana; नाम (nāma) - named; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - the earth; स्तौति (stauti) - praises; केवलम् (kevalam) - only;]
(But who does not fall always by fame, by brilliance, by prosperity—Agni named Niścyavana only praises the earth.)
But Agni, called Niścyavana, who never falls due to fame, brilliance, or prosperity, alone praises the earth. (03-209-12)
विपाप्मा कलुषैर्मुक्तो विशुद्धश्चार्चिषा ज्वलन्। विपापोऽग्निः सुतस्तस्य सत्यः समयकर्मसु ॥०३-२०९-१३॥
vipāpmā kaluṣair mukto viśuddhaś cārciṣā jvalan। vipāpo'gnaḥ sutas tasya satyaḥ samayakarmasu ॥03-209-13॥
[विपाप्मा (vipāpmā) - without sin; कलुषैः (kaluṣaiḥ) - by impurities; मुक्तः (muktaḥ) - freed; विशुद्धः (viśuddhaḥ) - pure; च (ca) - and; अर्चिषा (arciṣā) - by flame; ज्वलन् (jvalan) - shining; विपापः (vipāpaḥ) - without evil; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; तस्य (tasya) - of him; सत्यः (satyaḥ) - true; समयकर्मसु (samayakarmasu) - in proper actions;]
(Without sin, freed from impurities, pure and shining by flame, without evil is the fire, the son of him, true in proper actions.)
He is without sin, freed from impurities, pure and shining like flame. The fire, his son, is faultless and true in all his proper actions. (03-209-13)
आक्रोशतां हि भूतानां यः करोति हि निष्कृतिम्। अग्निः स निष्कृतिर्नाम शोभयत्यभिसेवितः ॥०३-२०९-१४॥
ākrośatāṃ hi bhūtānāṃ yaḥ karoti hi niṣkṛtim। agniḥ sa niṣkṛtirnāma śobhayatyabhisevitaḥ ॥03-209-14॥
[आक्रोशतां (ākrośatām) - of those who cry out (complain); हि (hi) - indeed; भूतानां (bhūtānāṃ) - of beings; यः (yaḥ) - who; करोति (karoti) - does; हि (hi) - indeed; निष्कृतिम् (niṣkṛtim) - expiation; अग्निः (agniḥ) - the fire; स (sa) - he; निष्कृतिः (niṣkṛtiḥ) - expiation; नाम (nāma) - called; शोभयति (śobhayati) - honors; अभिसेवितः (abhisevitaḥ) - being worshiped (served);]
(Of those who cry out indeed, of beings, who indeed makes expiation; fire, he, expiation, called, honors, being worshiped.)
He who performs expiation for beings who cry out (complain), indeed, the fire—called 'expiation'—when worshiped, brings honor. (03-209-14)
अनुकूजन्ति येनेह वेदनार्ताः स्वयं जनाः। तस्य पुत्रः स्वनो नाम पावकः स रुजस्करः ॥०३-२०९-१५॥
anukūjanti yeneha vedanārtāḥ svayaṃ janāḥ। tasya putraḥ svano nāma pāvakaḥ sa rujaskaraḥ॥03-209-15॥
[अनुकूजन्ति (anukūjanti) - respond; sound back; echo; येन (yena) - by whom; by which; इह (iha) - here; in this world; वेदनार्ताः (vedanārtāḥ) - afflicted by pain; suffering; स्वयं (svayam) - themselves; personally; जनाः (janāḥ) - people; persons; तस्य (tasya) - his; of him; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; स्वनः (svanaḥ) - Svana; sound; नाम (nāma) - by name; named; पावकः (pāvakaḥ) - Pāvaka; fire; सः (saḥ) - he; रुजस्करः (rujaskaraḥ) - cause of pain; causing pain;]

यस्तु विश्वस्य जगतो बुद्धिमाक्रम्य तिष्ठति। तं प्राहुरध्यात्मविदो विश्वजिन्नाम पावकम् ॥०३-२०९-१६॥
yastu viśvasya jagato buddhimākramya tiṣṭhati। taṃ prāhur adhyātmavido viśvajinnāma pāvakam॥03-209-16॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; विश्वस्य (viśvasya) - of the universe; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; बुद्धिम् (buddhim) - intellect; आक्रम्य (ākramya) - having pervaded; having seized; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - remains; तं (taṃ) - him; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - they call; they designate; अध्यात्मविदः (adhyātmavidaḥ) - knowers of the Self; विश्वजित्-नाम (viśvajit-nāma) - named Viśvajit; पावकम् (pāvakam) - the purifier; ०३-२०९-१६ (03-209-16) - ;]
(Who but, having pervaded the intellect of the universe, remains, him the knowers of the Self call named Viśvajit, the purifier.)
But he who remains pervading the intellect of the universe and the world—that one, the knowers of the Self call Viśvajit by name, the purifier. (03-209-16)
अन्तराग्निः श्रितो यो हि भुक्तं पचति देहिनाम्। स यज्ञे विश्वभुङ्नाम सर्वलोकेषु भारत ॥०३-२०९-१७॥
antarāgniḥ śrito yo hi bhuktaṃ pacati dehinām। sa yajñe viśvabhuṅnām sarvalokeṣu bhārata ॥03-209-17॥
[अन्तराग्निः (antarāgniḥ) - the inner fire; श्रितः (śritaḥ) - residing; यः (yaḥ) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; भुक्तं (bhuktaṃ) - eaten; पचति (pacati) - cooks; देहिनाम् (dehinām) - of embodied beings; सः (saḥ) - he; यज्ञे (yajñe) - in the sacrifice; विश्वभुक्-नाम (viśvabhuk-nām) - named eater of all; सर्वलोकेषु (sarvalokeṣu) - in all worlds; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(The inner fire indeed residing, who cooks the eaten food of embodied beings; he, in the sacrifice, named eater of all, in all worlds, O Bhārata.)
The inner fire which, residing within, digests the food eaten by beings—he, O Bhārata, is called the 'eater of all' in sacrifices throughout all worlds. (03-209-17)
ब्रह्मचारी यतात्मा च सततं विपुलव्रतः। ब्राह्मणाः पूजयन्त्येनं पाकयज्ञेषु पावकम् ॥०३-२०९-१८॥
brahmacārī yatātmā ca satataṃ vipulavrataḥ। brāhmaṇāḥ pūjayantyenaṃ pākayajñeṣu pāvakam ॥03-209-18॥
[ब्रह्मचारी (brahmacārī) - one who practices celibacy;, यतात्मा (yatātmā) - self-controlled;, च (ca) - and;, सततं (satataṃ) - always;, विपुलव्रतः (vipulavrataḥ) - of great vows;, ब्राह्मणाः (brāhmaṇāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas;, पूजयन्ति (pūjayanti) - worship;, एनं (enaṃ) - him;, पाकयज्ञेषु (pākayajñeṣu) - in cooking-sacrifices;, पावकम् (pāvakam) - the purifier (fire);]
(One who practices celibacy, self-controlled and always of great vows, Brāhmaṇas worship him as the purifier (fire) in the cooking-sacrifices.)
Brāhmaṇas worship as the sacred fire in cooking-sacrifices that person who is a self-controlled celibate, always observing great vows. (03-209-18)
प्रथितो गोपतिर्नाम नदी यस्याभवत्प्रिया। तस्मिन्सर्वाणि कर्माणि क्रियन्ते कर्मकर्तृभिः ॥०३-२०९-१९॥
prathito gopatir nāma nadī yasyābhavat priyā। tasmin sarvāṇi karmāṇi kriyante karmakartṛbhiḥ॥03-209-19॥
[प्रथितः (prathitaḥ) - famous; गोपतिः (gopatiḥ) - lord of cows; नाम (nāma) - by name; नदी (nadī) - river; यस्य (yasya) - whose; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; प्रिया (priyā) - dear; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in him/in that; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; क्रियन्ते (kriyante) - are performed; कर्मकर्तृभिः (karmakartṛbhiḥ) - by performers of actions;]
(The famous Gopati by name, the river whose beloved she became; in him/all that all actions are performed by performers of actions.)
The famous one named Gopati, whose beloved was the river; in him all acts are performed by their doers. (03-209-19)
वडवामुखः पिबत्यम्भो योऽसौ परमदारुणः। ऊर्ध्वभागूर्ध्वभाङ्नाम कविः प्राणाश्रितस्तु सः ॥०३-२०९-२०॥
vaḍavāmukhaḥ pibaty ambho yo'sau paramadāruṇaḥ। ūrdhvabhāg ūrdhvabhāṅ nāma kaviḥ prāṇāśritas tu saḥ॥03-209-20॥
[वडवामुखः (vaḍavāmukhaḥ) - the submarine fire (mythical being with a mare's face); पिबति (pibati) - drinks; अम्भः (ambhaḥ) - water; यः (yaḥ) - who; असौ (asau) - that; परमदारुणः (paramadāruṇaḥ) - extremely fierce; ऊर्ध्वभाग् (ūrdhva-bhāg) - upper part; ऊर्ध्वभाङ् (ūrdhva-bhāṅ) - going upwards; नाम (nāma) - named; कविः (kaviḥ) - sage; seer; प्राणाश्रितः (prāṇāśritaḥ) - dependent on life-breath; तु (tu) - but; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(The submarine-fire, drinks water, who is that extremely fierce one. The upper part, named 'the upward-going', the sage, but he is dependent on life-breath.)
That extremely fierce (being) known as the submarine fire drinks up the water; his upper part, named 'the upward-going', is the seer (kavi), but he is sustained by vital breath. (03-209-20)
उदग्द्वारं हविर्यस्य गृहे नित्यं प्रदीयते। ततः स्विष्टं भवेदाज्यं स्विष्टकृत्परमः स्मृतः ॥०३-२०९-२१॥
udagdvāraṃ haviryasya gṛhe nityaṃ pradīyate। tataḥ sviṣṭaṃ bhavedājyaṃ sviṣṭakṛtparamaḥ smṛtaḥ ॥03-209-21॥
[उदग्द्वारम् (udagdvāram) - northern-facing door; हविः (havis) - offering (oblations); यस्य (yasya) - whose; गृहे (gṛhe) - in house; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; प्रदीयते (pradīyate) - is offered; ततः (tataḥ) - therefrom; स्विष्टम् (sviṣṭam) - well (properly) performed [oblations]; भवेत् (bhavet) - becomes; आज्यम् (ājyam) - clarified butter; स्विष्टकृत् (sviṣṭakṛt) - the performer of the sviṣṭa sacrifice; परमः (paramaḥ) - supreme; स्मृतः (smṛtaḥ) - is considered;]
(In the house whose door faces north, where the offering is always given, from that, the clarified butter becomes sviṣṭa (rightly offered); the performer of the sviṣṭakṛt (rite) is considered supreme.)

यः प्रशान्तेषु भूतेषु मन्युर्भवति पावकः। क्रोधस्य तु रसो जज्ञे मन्यती चाथ पुत्रिका ॥ स्वाहेति दारुणा क्रूरा सर्वभूतेषु तिष्ठति ॥०३-२०९-२२॥
yaḥ praśānteṣu bhūteṣu manyur bhavati pāvakaḥ। krodhasya tu raso jajñe manyatī ca atha putrikā॥ svāheti dāruṇā krūrā sarvabhūteṣu tiṣṭhati॥03-209-22॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; प्रशान्तेषु (praśānteṣu) - among calm ones; भूतेषु (bhūteṣu) - among beings; मन्युः (manyuḥ) - anger; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; पावकः (pāvakaḥ) - fire; क्रोधस्य (krodhasya) - of anger; तु (tu) - but; रसः (rasaḥ) - essence; जज्ञे (jajñe) - was born; मन्यती (manyatī) - Manyatī (proper name); च (ca) - and; अथ (atha) - then; पुत्रिका (putrikā) - daughter; स्वाहेति (svāheti) - 'Svāhā' by name; दारुणा (dāruṇā) - terrible; क्रूरा (krūrā) - cruel; सर्वभूतेषु (sarvabhūteṣu) - among all beings; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - abides;]
(Who among calm beings, anger becomes fire. Of anger indeed, the essence was born, and Manyatī then (his) daughter. 'Svāhā' by name, terrible, cruel, she abides among all beings. (03-209-22))

त्रिदिवे यस्य सदृशो नास्ति रूपेण कश्चन। अतुल्यत्वात्कृतो देवैर्नाम्ना कामस्तु पावकः ॥०३-२०९-२३॥
tridive yasya sadṛśo nāsti rūpeṇa kaścana। atulyatvāt kṛto devair nāmnā kāmas tu pāvakaḥ॥03-209-23॥
[त्रिदिवे (tridive) - in the heaven; यस्स (yasya) - of whom; सदृशः (sadṛśaḥ) - equal; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - in beauty (form); कश्चन (kaścana) - anyone; अतुल्यत्वात् (atulyatvāt) - because of being incomparable; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - named; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; नाम्ना (nāmnā) - by the name; कामः (kāmaḥ) - Kāma; तु (tu) - indeed; पावकः (pāvakaḥ) - Pāvaka (Agni, Fire);]
(In heaven, of whom equal there is not in beauty anyone; because of being incomparable, named by the gods by the name Kāma indeed is Pāvaka.)
In heaven, Pāvaka, for whom there is no one equal in beauty, is called Kāma by the gods because he is incomparable. (03-209-23)
संहर्षाद्धारयन्क्रोधं धन्वी स्रग्वी रथे स्थितः। समरे नाशयेच्छत्रूनमोघो नाम पावकः ॥०३-२०९-२४॥
saṁharṣāddhārayan krodhaṁ dhanvī sragvī rathe sthitaḥ। samare nāśayet śatrūn amogho nāma pāvakaḥ ॥03-209-24॥
[संहर्षात् (saṁharṣāt) - from delight; धारयन् (dhārayan) - holding; क्रोधं (krodham) - anger; धन्वी (dhanvī) - the archer; स्रग्वी (sragvī) - garlanded; रथे (rathe) - on the chariot; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - standing; समरे (samare) - in battle; नाशयेत् (nāśayet) - he would destroy; शत्रून् (śatrūn) - enemies; अमोघः (amoghaḥ) - unfailing; नाम (nāma) - by name; पावकः (pāvakaḥ) - Pāvaka (the Fire);]
(From delight, holding anger, the archer, garlanded, standing on the chariot; in battle, he would destroy enemies; unfailing, by name, Pāvaka (the Fire).)

उक्थो नाम महाभाग त्रिभिरुक्थैरभिष्टुतः। महावाचं त्वजनयत्सकामाश्वं हि यं विदुः ॥०३-२०९-२५॥
uktho nāma mahābhāga tribhir ukthair abhiṣṭutaḥ. mahāvācaṃ tv ajanayat sakāma aśvaṃ hi yaṃ viduḥ ॥03-209-25॥
[उक्थः (ukthaḥ) - hymn;, नाम (nāma) - by name;, महाभाग (mahābhāga) - greatly fortunate one;, त्रिभिः (tribhiḥ) - by three;, उक्थैः (ukthaiḥ) - with hymns;, अभिष्टुतः (abhiṣṭutaḥ) - praised;, महावाचम् (mahāvācam) - great speech;, त्व (tv) - indeed;, अजनयत् (ajanayat) - generated;, सकाम (sakāma) - with desire;, अश्वम् (aśvam) - horse;, हि (hi) - indeed;, यम् (yam) - whom;, विदुः (viduḥ) - they know;]
(Hymn by name, greatly fortunate one, by three hymns praised, great speech indeed generated, with desire horse indeed whom they know.)
