यदाभिषिक्तो भगवान्सेनापत्येन पावकिः। तदा सम्प्रस्थितः श्रीमान्हृष्टो भद्रवटं हरः ॥ रथेनादित्यवर्णेन पार्वत्या सहितः प्रभुः ॥०३-२२१-१॥
yadābhiṣikto bhagavān senāpatyena pāvakiḥ। tadā samprasthitaḥ śrīmān hṛṣṭo bhadravaṭaṃ haraḥ॥ rathenādityavarṇena pārvatyā sahitaḥ prabhuḥ॥03-221-1॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; अभिषिक्तः (abhiṣiktaḥ) - anointed; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable one; सेनापत्येन (senāpatyena) - with the post of commander; पावकिः (pāvakiḥ) - son of Pāvaka (Kārtikeya); तदा (tadā) - then; सम्प्रस्थितः (samprasthitaḥ) - set forth; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - auspicious; हृष्टः (hṛṣṭaḥ) - joyful; भद्रवटम् (bhadravaṭam) - to Bhadravaṭa; हरः (haraḥ) - Hara (Śiva); रथेन (rathena) - by chariot; आदित्यवर्णेन (ādityavarṇena) - having the luster of the sun; पार्वत्या (pārvatyā) - with Pārvatī; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord;]
(When the venerable one, the son of Pāvaka, was anointed with the post of commander, then the auspicious Hara, joyful, set forth to Bhadravaṭa by a chariot having the luster of the sun, accompanied by Pārvatī, the lord.)
When the venerable son of Pāvaka was consecrated as commander, then the joyous and prosperous Hara went to Bhadravaṭa in a chariot shining like the sun, accompanied by Pārvatī, the lord. (03-221-1)
सहस्रं तस्य सिंहानां तस्मिन्युक्तं रथोत्तमे। उत्पपात दिवं शुभ्रं कालेनाभिप्रचोदितः ॥०३-२२१-२॥
sahasraṃ tasya siṃhānāṃ tasmin yuktaṃ rathottame। utpapāta divaṃ śubhraṃ kālenābhipracoditaḥ॥03-221-2॥
[सहस्रं (sahasraṃ) - a thousand; तस्य (tasya) - of him; सिंहानां (siṃhānāṃ) - of lions; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; युक्तं (yuktaṃ) - yoked; रथोत्तमे (rathottame) - in the excellent chariot; उत्पपात (utpapāta) - rose up; दिवं (divaṃ) - to the sky; शुभ्रं (śubhraṃ) - bright; कालेन (kālena) - by time; अभिप्रचोदितः (abhipracoditaḥ) - impelled (he/it was);]
(A thousand lions of him in that yoked excellent chariot rose up to the bright sky, impelled by time.)

ते पिबन्त इवाकाशं त्रासयन्तश्चराचरान्। सिंहा नभस्यगच्छन्त नदन्तश्चारुकेसराः ॥०३-२२१-३॥
te pibanta ivākāśaṃ trāsayantash carācarān| siṃhā nabhasy agacchanta nadantaś cārukesarāḥ ॥03-221-3॥
[ते (te) - they; पिबन्त (pibanta) - drink; इव (iva) - as if; आकाशं (ākāśam) - the sky; त्रासयन्तः (trāsayantaḥ) - causing to tremble; चराचरान् (carācarān) - moving and unmoving (beings); सिंहाः (siṃhāḥ) - lions; नभस्य (nabhasya) - in the sky; गच्छन्त (gacchanta) - going; नदन्तः (nadantaḥ) - roaring; चारुकेसराः (cārukesarāḥ) - with lovely manes;]
(They as if drink the sky, causing moving and unmoving beings to tremble. The lions in the sky go, roaring, with lovely manes. (03-221-3))
They seem to drink the sky, frightening all creatures, both moving and motionless. The lions in the sky move, roaring, beautiful in their manes. (03-221-3)
तस्मिन्रथे पशुपतिः स्थितो भात्युमया सह। विद्युता सहितः सूर्यः सेन्द्रचापे घने यथा ॥०३-२२१-४॥
tasmin rathe paśupatiḥ sthito bhāty umayā saha। vidyutā sahitaḥ sūryaḥ sendracāpe ghane yathā॥03-221-4॥
[तस्मिन् रथे (tasmin rathe) - in that chariot; पशुपतिः (paśupatiḥ) - Paśupati (Śiva, Lord of beings); स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - standing; भाति (bhāti) - shines; उमया सह (umayā saha) - together with Umā (Pārvatī); विद्युता सहितः (vidyutā sahitaḥ) - with lightning joined; सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) - the sun; सेन्द्रचापे (sendracāpe) - with Indra's bow (rainbow); घने (ghane) - in the cloud; यथा (yathā) - just as;]
(In that chariot Paśupati stands, shines together with Umā; with lightning joined, the sun with Indra's bow (rainbow) in the cloud, just as.)
Just as the sun, accompanied by lightning and the rainbow, shines in a cloud, so does Paśupati (Śiva), standing in that chariot, shine together with Umā. (03-221-4)
अग्रतस्तस्य भगवान्धनेशो गुह्यकैः सह। आस्थाय रुचिरं याति पुष्पकं नरवाहनः ॥०३-२२१-५॥
agratas tasya bhagavān dhaneśo guhyakaiḥ saha। āsthāya ruciraṃ yāti puṣpakaṃ naravāhanaḥ ॥03-221-5॥
[अग्रतः (agratas) - in front; in the front; तस्य (tasya) - of him; his; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable; the blessed one; धनेशः (dhaneśaḥ) - lord of wealth (Kubera); गुह्यकैः (guhyakaiḥ) - with the Guhyakas (divine beings); सह (saha) - with; together; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having ascended; having mounted; रुचिरम् (ruciram) - pleasing; beautiful; याति (yāti) - he goes; proceeds; पुष्पकम् (puṣpakam) - Pushpaka (the heavenly chariot); नरवाहनः (naravāhanaḥ) - the carrier of men (epithet for Kubera);]
(In front of him, the venerable lord of wealth, together with the Guhyakas, having ascended the beautiful Pushpaka, goes, the carrier of men.)
Before him, the venerable Kubera, lord of wealth, together with the Guhyakas, mounted the beautiful Pushpaka and proceeded—the carrier of men. (03-221-5)
ऐरावतं समास्थाय शक्रश्चापि सुरैः सह। पृष्ठतोऽनुययौ यान्तं वरदं वृषभध्वजम् ॥०३-२२१-६॥
airāvataṃ samāsthāya śakraś cāpi suraiḥ saha। pṛṣṭhato'nu yayau yāntaṃ varadaṃ vṛṣabhadhvajam ॥03-221-6॥
[ऐरावतं (airāvatam) - (the elephant) Airāvata; समास्थाय (samāsthāya) - having mounted; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Śakra; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सुरैः (suraiḥ) - with the gods; सह (saha) - together; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - from behind; अनुययौ (anuyayau) - followed; यान्तम् (yāntam) - going; वरदम् (varadam) - the boon-giver; वृषभध्वजम् (vṛṣabhadhvajam) - the one whose emblem is the bull;]
(Having mounted Airāvata, Śakra also together with the gods from behind followed the boon-giver, the one whose emblem is the bull, as he was going.)

जम्भकैर्यक्षरक्षोभिः स्रग्विभिः समलङ्कृतः। यात्यमोघो महायक्षो दक्षिणं पक्षमास्थितः ॥०३-२२१-७॥
jambhakair yakṣa-rakṣobhiḥ sragvibhiḥ sam-alaṅkṛtaḥ। yāty amogho mahā-yakṣo dakṣiṇaṃ pakṣam āsthitaḥ॥03-221-7॥
[जम्भकैः (jambhakaiḥ) - by Jambhakas; (a class of deities or beings); यक्षरक्षोभिः (yakṣa-rakṣobhiḥ) - by Yakṣas and Rākṣasas; (spirits and demons); स्रग्विभिः (sragvibhiḥ) - by those adorned with garlands; (wearers of garlands); समलङ्कृतः (sam-alaṅkṛtaḥ) - well adorned; decorated; याति (yāti) - goes; proceeds; अमोघः (amoghaḥ) - unfailing; unfailing one; महायक्षः (mahā-yakṣaḥ) - great Yakṣa; (Yakṣa leader); दक्षिणम् (dakṣiṇam) - southern; to the south; पक्षम् (pakṣam) - wing; side; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - having assumed; having taken position;]
(Adorned well by Jambhakas, Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, and those with garlands, the unfailing great Yakṣa, having assumed the southern side, goes.)
Adorned with Jambhakas, Yakṣas, Rākṣasas, and garlanded beings, the unfailing great Yakṣa takes his place on the southern side. (03-221-7)
तस्य दक्षिणतो देवा मरुतश्चित्रयोधिनः। गच्छन्ति वसुभिः सार्धं रुद्रैश्च सह सङ्गताः ॥०३-२२१-८॥
tasya dakṣiṇato devā marutaś citrayodhinaḥ। gacchanti vasubhiḥ sārdhaṁ rudraiś ca saha saṅgatāḥ॥03-221-8॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him;, दक्षिणतः (dakṣiṇataḥ) - from the south side;, देवाः (devāḥ) - gods;, मरुतः (marutaḥ) - the Maruts;, च (ca) - and;, चित्रयोधिनः (citrayodhinaḥ) - having wondrous warriors;, गच्छन्ति (gacchanti) - go;, वसुभिः (vasubhiḥ) - with the Vasus;, सार्धम् (sārdham) - together with;, रुद्रैः (rudraiḥ) - with the Rudras;, च (ca) - and;, सह (saha) - along with;, सङ्गताः (saṅgatāḥ) - joined;]
(Of him from the south side the gods and the Maruts having wondrous warriors go with the Vasus together with the Rudras and joined.)
To his south, the gods and the Maruts of wondrous warriors, together with the Vasus and accompanied by the Rudras, proceed as one. (03-221-8)
यमश्च मृत्युना सार्धं सर्वतः परिवारितः। घोरैर्व्याधिशतैर्याति घोररूपवपुस्तथा ॥०३-२२१-९॥
yamaś ca mṛtyunā sārdhaṃ sarvataḥ parivāritaḥ। ghorair vyādhiśatair yāti ghorarūpavapus tathā॥03-221-9॥
[यमः (yamaḥ) - Yama; (the god of death;) च (ca) - and; मृत्युना (mṛtyunā) - with death; (by death;) सार्धं (sārdham) - together with; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - from all sides; परिवारितः (parivāritaḥ) - surrounded; (encompassed;) घोरैः (ghoraiḥ) - by terrible; व्याधिशतैः (vyādhiśataiḥ) - by hundreds of diseases; याति (yāti) - goes; (proceeds;) घोररूपवपुः (ghorarūpavapuḥ) - terrible-form-bodied; (having a terrible form;) तथा (tathā) - thus;]
(Yama and with death together from all sides surrounded by terrible hundreds of diseases goes terrible-form-bodied thus.)
Yama, surrounded on all sides by death and by hundreds of terrible diseases, proceeds thus in a terrible form. (03-221-9)
यमस्य पृष्ठतश्चैव घोरस्त्रिशिखरः शितः। विजयो नाम रुद्रस्य याति शूलः स्वलङ्कृतः ॥०३-२२१-१०॥
yamasya pṛṣṭhataścaiva ghorastriśikharaḥ śitaḥ। vijayo nāma rudrasya yāti śūlaḥ swalaṅkṛtaḥ ॥03-221-10॥
[यमस्य (yamasya) - of Yama; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - from the back; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; घोरः (ghoraḥ) - terrible; त्रिशिखरः (triśikharaḥ) - three-pointed; शितः (śitaḥ) - sharp; विजयः (vijayaḥ) - Vijaya (name); नाम (nāma) - named; रुद्रस्य (rudrasya) - of Rudra; याति (yāti) - goes; शूलः (śūlaḥ) - spear; स्वलङ्कृतः (swalaṅkṛtaḥ) - well-ornamented;]
(Of Yama from the back and indeed terrible three-pointed sharp, Vijaya named, of Rudra, goes spear well-ornamented.)
A well-ornamented, sharp, and terrible three-pointed spear named Vijaya of Rudra comes from the rear of Yama. (03-221-10)
तमुग्रपाशो वरुणो भगवान्सलिलेश्वरः। परिवार्य शनैर्याति यादोभिर्विविधैर्वृतः ॥०३-२२१-११॥
tamugrapāśo varuṇo bhagavān salileśvaraḥ। parivārya śanair yāti yādobhir vividhair vṛtaḥ॥03-221-11॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उग्रपाशः (ugrapāśaḥ) - having mighty bonds; वरुणः (varuṇaḥ) - Varuṇa; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered one; सलिलेश्वरः (salileśvaraḥ) - the lord of the waters; परिवार्य (parivārya) - having surrounded; शनैः (śanaiḥ) - slowly; याति (yāti) - goes; यादोभिः (yādobhiḥ) - with aquatic beings; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - of various kinds; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - accompanied;]
(Having mighty bonds, Varuṇa, the revered lord of the waters, having surrounded him, slowly goes, accompanied by various kinds of aquatic beings.)
Varuṇa, the revered and mighty-bonded lord of the waters, having surrounded him, proceeds slowly, accompanied by various kinds of aquatic beings. (03-221-11)
पृष्ठतो विजयस्यापि याति रुद्रस्य पट्टिशः। गदामुसलशक्त्याद्यैर्वृतः प्रहरणोत्तमैः ॥०३-२२१-१२॥
pṛṣṭhato vijayasya api yāti rudrasya paṭṭiśaḥ। gadā-musala-śakty-ādyair vṛtaḥ praharaṇottamaiḥ ॥03-221-12॥
[पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - from behind; विजयस्यानि (vijayasya api) - of Vijaya also; याति (yāti) - goes; रुद्रस्य (rudrasya) - of Rudra; पट्टिशः (paṭṭiśaḥ) - lance; गदा (gadā) - mace; मुसल (musala) - club; शक्त्याद्यैः (śakty-ādyaiḥ) - with spears and so on; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - surrounded; प्रहरणोत्तमैः (praharaṇottamaiḥ) - by excellent weapons;]
(From behind even of Vijaya goes the lance of Rudra, surrounded by excellent weapons such as mace, club, spear and others.)
Behind Vijaya, the lance of Rudra goes, surrounded by splendid weapons like maces, clubs, spears, and others. (03-221-12)
पट्टिशं त्वन्वगाद्राजंश्छत्रं रौद्रं महाप्रभम्। कमण्डलुश्चाप्यनु तं महर्षिगणसंवृतः ॥०३-२२१-१३॥
paṭṭiśaṁ tvanvagād rājan chatraṁ raudraṁ mahāprabham। kamaṇḍaluś cāpy anu taṁ maharṣigaṇasaṁvṛtaḥ ॥03-221-13॥
[पट्टिशम् (paṭṭiśam) - spear; त्व् (tv) - then; अन्वगात् (anvagāt) - followed; राजन् (rājan) - O king; छत्रम् (chatram) - umbrella; रौद्रम् (raudram) - terrible; महाप्रभम् (mahāprabham) - very radiant; कमण्डलुः (kamaṇḍaluḥ) - water pot; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अनु (anu) - after; तं (taṁ) - him; महर्षिगणसंवृतः (maharṣigaṇasaṁvṛtaḥ) - surrounded by groups of great sages;]
(The spear then followed, O king; the terrible, very radiant umbrella and also the water pot, after him, surrounded by groups of great sages.)

तस्य दक्षिणतो भाति दण्डो गच्छञ्श्रिया वृतः। भृग्वङ्गिरोभिः सहितो देवैश्चाप्यभिपूजितः ॥०३-२२१-१४॥
tasya dakṣiṇato bhāti daṇḍaḥ gacchan śriyā vṛtaḥ। bhṛgv-aṅgirobhiḥ sahito devaiś cāpy abhipūjitaḥ॥03-221-14॥

(Of him, on the southern side, shines Daṇḍa, going, enveloped by splendour, accompanied with Bhṛgu and Aṅgiras, and with gods also honoured.)
On his southern side shines Daṇḍa, traversing, enveloped in splendour, accompanied by Bhṛgu, Aṅgiras, and also honoured by the gods. (03-221-14)
एषां तु पृष्ठतो रुद्रो विमले स्यन्दने स्थितः। याति संहर्षयन्सर्वांस्तेजसा त्रिदिवौकसः ॥०३-२२१-१५॥
eṣāṃ tu pṛṣṭhato rudro vimale syandane sthitaḥ। yāti saṃharṣayan sarvān tejasā tridivaukasaḥ॥03-221-15॥
[एषां (eṣāṃ) - of these; तु (tu) - but; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - behind; रुद्रः (rudraḥ) - Rudra; विमले (vimale) - pure; स्यन्दने (syandane) - chariot; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - standing; याति (yāti) - goes; संहर्षयन् (saṃharṣayan) - rejoicing; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; तेजसा (tejasā) - by splendor; त्रिदिवौकसः (tridivaukasaḥ) - inhabitants of heaven;]
(Of these but behind Rudra in a pure chariot standing goes rejoicing all by splendor the inhabitants of heaven.)
But behind these, Rudra, standing on a pure chariot, goes, gladdening all the inhabitants of heaven by his splendor. (03-221-15)
ऋषयश्चैव देवाश्च गन्धर्वा भुजगास्तथा। नद्यो नदा द्रुमाश्चैव तथैवाप्सरसां गणाः ॥०३-२२१-१६॥
ṛṣayaścaiva devāśca gandharvā bhujagāstathā। nadyo nadā drumāścaiva tathaivāpsarasāṃ gaṇāḥ॥03-221-16॥
[ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - seers; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; च (ca) - and; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - gandharvas; भुजगाः (bhujagāḥ) - serpents; तथा (tathā) - also; नद्यः (nadyaḥ) - rivers (feminine); नदाः (nadāḥ) - rivers (masculine); द्रुमाः (drumāḥ) - trees; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; अप्सरसां (apsarasām) - of the apsarases; गणाः (gaṇāḥ) - groups;]
(Seers and indeed gods and gandharvas, serpents also; rivers (feminine), rivers (masculine), and trees indeed, likewise groups of the apsarases.)
Seers, gods, gandharvas, serpents, rivers (both feminine and masculine), trees, and likewise groups of apsarases (celestial nymphs). (03-221-16)
नक्षत्राणि ग्रहाश्चैव देवानां शिशवश्च ये। स्त्रियश्च विविधाकारा यान्ति रुद्रस्य पृष्ठतः ॥ सृजन्त्यः पुष्पवर्षाणि चारुरूपा वराङ्गनाः ॥०३-२२१-१७॥
nakṣatrāṇi grahāś caiva devānāṃ śiśavaś ca ye। striyaś ca vividhākārā yānti rudrasya pṛṣṭhataḥ ॥ sṛjantyaḥ puṣpavarṣāṇi cārurūpā varāṅganāḥ ॥03-221-17॥
[नक्षत्राणि (nakṣatrāṇi) - stars; ग्रहाः (grahāḥ) - planets; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; शिशवः (śiśavaḥ) - children; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - who; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; च (ca) - and; विविधाकारा (vividhākārā) - of various forms; यान्ति (yānti) - go; रुद्रस्य (rudrasya) - of Rudra; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - behind; सृजन्त्यः (sṛjantyaḥ) - who are creating; पुष्पवर्षाणि (puṣpavarṣāṇi) - showers of flowers; चारुरूपा (cārurūpā) - of lovely form; वराङ्गनाः (varāṅganāḥ) - excellent women;]
(stars, planets indeed, of the gods children and who, women and of various forms, go behind Rudra; who are creating showers of flowers, of lovely form, excellent women.)
Stars, planets, and also the children of the gods, as well as women of various forms, go behind Rudra; excellent women of lovely form create showers of flowers. (03-221-17)
पर्जन्यश्चाप्यनुययौ नमस्कृत्य पिनाकिनम्। छत्रं तु पाण्डुरं सोमस्तस्य मूर्धन्यधारयत् ॥ चामरे चापि वायुश्च गृहीत्वाग्निश्च विष्ठितौ ॥०३-२२१-१८॥
parjanyaś cāpy anuyayau namaskṛtya pinākinam। chatraṁ tu pāṇḍuraṁ somas tasya mūrdhany adhārayat॥ cāmare cāpi vāyuś ca gṛhītvāgniś ca viṣṭhitau॥03-221-18॥
[पर्जन्यः (parjanyaḥ) - the god of rain; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अनुययौ (anuyayau) - followed; नमस्कृत्य (namaskṛtya) - having bowed to; पिनाकिनम् (pinākinam) - (to) Pinākī (the wielder of the bow Pināka, i.e., Śiva); छत्रं (chatram) - umbrella; तु (tu) - but; पाण्डुरं (pāṇḍuram) - white; सोमः (somaḥ) - the Moon; तस्य (tasya) - of him; मूर्धनि (mūrdhani) - upon the head; अधारयत् (adhārayat) - held; चामरे (cāmare) - fly-whisks; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - the Wind (god); च (ca) - and; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having taken; अग्निः (agniḥ) - Agni (the Fire god); च (ca) - and; विष्ठितौ (viṣṭhitau) - stood (two);]
(Parjanya and also followed, having bowed to Pinākin. The Moon but white umbrella of him upon (his) head held. The fly-whisks also the Wind and, having taken, Agni and (they) stood (the two).)
Parjanya also followed, having bowed to Pinākin (Śiva). Soma held a white umbrella over his head. The Wind and Agni, having taken up fly-whisks, stood in attendance. (03-221-18)
शक्रश्च पृष्ठतस्तस्य याति राजञ्श्रिया वृतः। सह राजर्षिभिः सर्वैः स्तुवानो वृषकेतनम् ॥०३-२२१-१९॥

तत्र विद्यागणाः सर्वे ये केचित्कविभिः कृताः। यस्य कुर्वन्ति वचनं सेन्द्रा देवाश्चमूमुखे ॥०३-२२१-२१॥
tatra vidyāgaṇāḥ sarve ye kecit kavibhiḥ kṛtāḥ। yasya kurvanti vacanaṃ sendrā devāś ca mūmukhe ॥03-221-21॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; विद्यागणाः (vidyāgaṇāḥ) - groups of knowledges; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ये (ye) - which; केचित् (kecit) - whatsoever; कविभिः (kavibhiḥ) - by poets; कृताः (kṛtāḥ) - made; यस्यम् (yasya) - whose; कुर्वन्ति (kurvanti) - do/make; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech/word; सेन्द्राः (sendrāḥ) - along with Indra; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; च (ca) - and; मूमुखे (mūmukhe) - at the forefront of the army;]
(There, all groups of knowledges whatsoever made by poets, whose speech even the gods along with Indra do (attend to) at the forefront of the army.)
There, all the groups of sciences whatsoever composed by poets—whose words even the gods with Indra heed in the front of the host—(are present). (03-221-21)
स गृहीत्वा पताकां तु यात्यग्रे राक्षसो ग्रहः। व्यापृतस्तु श्मशाने यो नित्यं रुद्रस्य वै सखा ॥ पिङ्गलो नाम यक्षेन्द्रो लोकस्यानन्ददायकः ॥०३-२२१-२२॥
sa gṛhītvā patākāṁ tu yāty agre rākṣaso grahaḥ। vyāpṛtas tu śmaśāne yo nityaṁ rudrasya vai sakhā॥ piṅgalo nāma yakṣendraḥ lokasy ānandadāyakaḥ॥03-221-22॥
[स (sa) - he; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having taken; पताकां (patākāṁ) - banner; तु (tu) - but; याति (yāti) - goes; अग्रे (agre) - in front; राक्षसः (rākṣasaḥ) - rākṣasa; ग्रहः (grahaḥ) - planet; (or demon as planet; व्यापृतः (vyāpṛtaḥ) - engaged; तु (tu) - but; श्मशाने (śmaśāne) - in the cremation ground; यः (yaḥ) - who; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; रुद्रस्य (rudrasya) - of Rudra; वै (vai) - indeed; सखा (sakhā) - friend; पिङ्गलः (piṅgalaḥ) - Piṅgala; नाम (nāma) - named; यक्षेन्द्रः (yakṣendraḥ) - lord of the yakṣas; लोकस्य (lokasya) - of the world; आनन्ददायकः (ānandadāyakaḥ) - giver of delight;]
(He, having taken the banner, but goes in front (like) a rākṣasa-graha; but engaged in the cremation ground, who is always the friend of Rudra indeed. Piṅgala by name, the lord of the yakṣas, is giver of delight to the world. (03-221-22))
Having taken the banner, he goes ahead like a rākṣasa-graha; he who is always engaged in the cremation ground and is indeed a friend of Rudra. He is called Piṅgala, the lord of the yakṣas, the giver of delight to the world. (03-221-22)
एभिः स सहितस्तत्र ययौ देवो यथासुखम्। अग्रतः पृष्ठतश्चैव न हि तस्य गतिर्ध्रुवा ॥०३-२२१-२३॥
ebhiḥ sa sahitastatra yayau devo yathāsukham। agrataḥ pṛṣṭhataścaiva na hi tasya gatirdhruvā ॥03-221-23॥
[एभिः (ebhiḥ) - with these; स (sa) - he; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - together; तत्र (tatra) - there; ययौ (yayau) - went; देवः (devaḥ) - god; यथासुखम् (yathāsukham) - as (his) comfort; अग्रतः (agrataḥ) - in front; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - behind; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; तस्य (tasya) - his; गतिः (gatiḥ) - movement; ध्रुवा (dhruvā) - fixed;]
(With these, he together there went god as (his) comfort. In front, behind and indeed, not indeed his movement fixed.)
He, together with these, went there as he pleased. In front, and behind as well, for indeed his movement was not fixed. (03-221-23)
रुद्रं सत्कर्मभिर्मर्त्याः पूजयन्तीह दैवतम्। शिवमित्येव यं प्राहुरीशं रुद्रं पिनाकिनम् ॥ भावैस्तु विविधाकारैः पूजयन्ति महेश्वरम् ॥०३-२२१-२४॥
rudraṁ satkarmabhir martyāḥ pūjayantīha daivatam। śivamityeva yaṁ prāhur īśaṁ rudraṁ pinākinam ॥ bhāvais tu vividha-ākāraiḥ pūjayanti maheśvaram ॥03-221-24॥
[रुद्रं (rudraṁ) - Rudra; सत्कर्मभिः (satkarmabhiḥ) - by virtuous deeds; मर्त्याः (martyāḥ) - mortals; पूजयन्ति (pūjayanti) - worship; इह (iha) - here; दैवतम् (daivatam) - the deity; शिवम् (śivam) - Śiva; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; यम् (yam) - whom; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - they call; ईशम् (īśam) - the Lord; रुद्रम् (rudram) - Rudra; पिनाकिनम् (pinākinam) - the bearer of Pināka (bow); भावैः (bhāvaiḥ) - by emotions; तु (tu) - but; विविधाकारैः (vividha-ākāraiḥ) - with various forms; पूजयन्ति (pūjayanti) - they worship; महेश्वरम् (maheśvaram) - Maheśvara;]
(Rudra by virtuous deeds mortals worship here the deity. Śiva thus indeed whom they call the Lord Rudra, the bearer of Pināka. By emotions but with various forms they worship Maheśvara.)
Here, mortals worship Rudra, the deity, through virtuous acts. The one whom they indeed call Śiva, the Lord, Rudra, the wielder of the Pināka bow. But by various feelings and forms, they worship Maheśvara. (03-221-24)
देवसेनापतिस्त्वेवं देवसेनाभिरावृतः। अनुगच्छति देवेशं ब्रह्मण्यः कृत्तिकासुतः ॥०३-२२१-२५॥
devasenāpatis tvaivaṃ devasenābhir āvṛtaḥ। anugacchati deveśaṃ brahmaṇyaḥ kṛttikāsutaḥ॥03-221-25॥
[देवसेनापतिः (devasenāpatiḥ) - chief of the army of the gods; त्वेवम् (tvaivaṃ) - thus; देवसेनाभिः (devasenābhiḥ) - with the goddesses' army; आवृतः (āvṛtaḥ) - surrounded; अनुगच्छति (anugacchati) - follows; देवेशं (deveśam) - the lord of the gods; ब्रह्मण्यः (brahmaṇyaḥ) - devoted to brahman; कृत्तिकासुतः (kṛttikāsutaḥ) - son of Kṛttikā(s);]
(The chief of the army of the gods, thus, surrounded by the goddesses' army, follows the lord of the gods, devoted to brahman, the son of Kṛttikā(s).)

अथाब्रवीन्महासेनं महादेवो बृहद्वचः। सप्तमं मारुतस्कन्धं रक्ष नित्यमतन्द्रितः ॥०३-२२१-२६॥
athābravīn mahāsenaṃ mahādevo bṛhad-vacaḥ। saptamaṃ māruta-skandhaṃ rakṣa nityam atandritaḥ॥03-221-26॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; महासेनम् (mahāsenaṃ) - to Mahāsena; महादेवः (mahādevaḥ) - Mahādeva; बृहद्-वचः (bṛhad-vacaḥ) - with great words; सप्तमम् (saptamam) - the seventh; मारुत-स्कन्धम् (māruta-skandham) - wind-section; रक्ष (rakṣa) - protect; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; अतन्द्रितः (atandritaḥ) - without sloth;]
(Then Mahādeva, with great words, spoke to Mahāsena: Always protect the seventh wind-section without sloth.)
Then Mahādeva spoke these weighty words to Mahāsena: "Protect constantly the seventh division of the Maruts without negligence." (03-221-26)

saptamaṃ mārutaskandhaṃ pālayiṣyāmyahaṃ prabho। yadanyadapi me kāryaṃ deva tadvada māciram ॥03-221-27॥
[सप्तमं (saptamaṃ) - seventh; मारुतस्कन्धं (mārutaskandham) - Maruta-troop; (troop of Maruts) पालयिष्यामि (pālayiṣyāmi) - I shall protect; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; प्रभो (prabho) - O Lord; यत् (yat) - whatever; अन्यत् अपि (anyad api) - else also; मे (me) - for me; कार्यं (kāryam) - task; देव (deva) - O god; तत् (tat) - that; वद (vada) - tell; मा (mā) - not; चिरम् (ciram) - delay;]
(The seventh Maruta-troop I shall protect, O Lord. Whatever else also (is) task for me, O god, that tell, not (with) delay.)
O Lord, I shall protect the seventh troop of the Maruts. If there is any other task for me, O god, tell that without delay. (03-221-27)
रुद्र उवाच॥

kāryeṣu ahaṃ tvayā putra sandraṣṭavyaḥ sadaiva hi । darśanāt mama bhaktyā ca śreyaḥ parama vāpsyasi ॥03-221-28॥
[कार्येषु (kāryeṣu) - in activities; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; पुत्र (putra) - son; संद्रष्टव्यः (sandraṣṭavyaḥ) - to be seen; सदैव (sadaiva) - always; हि (hi) - indeed; दर्शनात् (darśanāt) - from seeing; मम (mama) - of me; भक्त्या (bhaktyā) - with devotion; च (ca) - and; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - the highest good; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; आप्स्यसि (vāpsyasi) - you will obtain;]
(In activities I by you, son, am to be seen always indeed. From seeing me and with devotion, you will obtain the supreme highest good.)
O son, in all your activities, you should always indeed see me. Through seeing me and with devotion, you will attain the supreme highest good. (03-221-28)

इत्युक्त्वा विससर्जैनं परिष्वज्य महेष्वरः। विसर्जिते ततः स्कन्दे बभूवौत्पातिकं महत् ॥ सहसैव महाराज देवान्सर्वान्प्रमोहयत् ॥०३-२२१-२९॥
ity uktvā visasarja enaṃ pariṣvajya maheśvaraḥ। visarjite tataḥ skande babhūvāutpātikaṃ mahat॥ sahasaiva mahārāja devān sarvān pramohayat॥03-221-29॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; विससर्ज (visasarja) - he sent forth; एनम् (enam) - him; परिष्वज्य (pariṣvajya) - having embraced; महेश्वरः (maheśvaraḥ) - Maheśvara; विसर्जिते (visarjite) - when released; ततः (tataḥ) - then; स्कन्दे (skande) - on (the) Skanda; बभूव (babhūva) - there arose; उत्पातिकं (utpātikaṃ) - ominous; महत् (mahat) - great; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; एव (eva) - surely; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; देवान् (devān) - the gods; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; प्रमोहयत् (pramohayat) - caused bewilderment;]
(Thus having spoken, having embraced him, Maheśvara sent him forth. When Skanda was released then there arose a great ominous (sign). Suddenly, O great king, it surely bewildered all the gods.)
After thus speaking and embracing him, Maheśvara sent Skanda forth. When Skanda was released, a great ominous event occurred that suddenly bewildered all the gods, O great king. (03-221-29)
जज्वाल खं सनक्षत्रं प्रमूढं भुवनं भृशम्। चचाल व्यनदच्चोर्वी तमोभूतं जगत्प्रभो ॥०३-२२१-३०॥
jajvāla khaṃ sanakṣatraṃ pramūḍhaṃ bhuvanaṃ bhṛśam। cacāla vyanadac corvī tamobhūtaṃ jagatprabho ॥03-221-30॥
[जज्वाल (jajvāla) - blazed intensely; खं (kham) - sky; सनक्षत्रं (sanakṣatram) - with stars; प्रमूढं (pramūḍham) - bewildered; भुवनं (bhuvanam) - world; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - excessively; चचाल (cacāla) - trembled; व्यानदत् (vyanadat) - roared; च (ca) - and; ऊर्वी (ūrvī) - earth; तमोभूतं (tamobhūtam) - become darkness; जगत्प्रभो (jagatprabho) - O lord of the world;]
(Blazed intensely the sky with stars, bewildered the world excessively. Trembled and roared the earth, become darkness, O lord of the world.)

ततस्तद्दारुणं दृष्ट्वा क्षुभितः शङ्करस्तदा। उमा चैव महाभागा देवाश्च समहर्षयः ॥०३-२२१-३१॥
tatas taddāruṇaṃ dṛṣṭvā kṣubhitaḥ śaṅkaras tadā। umā caiva mahābhāgā devāś ca samaharṣayaḥ ॥03-221-31॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तत् (tat) - that; दाहरणम् (dāruṇam) - terrible; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; क्षुभितः (kṣubhitaḥ) - agitated; शङ्करः (śaṅkaraḥ) - Śaṅkara; तदा (tadā) - at that time; उमा (umā) - Umā; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - also; महाभागा (mahābhāgā) - most fortunate; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; च (ca) - and; समहर्षयः (samaharṣayaḥ) - greatly amazed;]
(Then, seeing that terrible (thing), agitated Śaṅkara at that time; Umā also, most fortunate, and the gods, and greatly amazed.)

ततस्तेषु प्रमूढेषु पर्वताम्बुदसंनिभम्। नानाप्रहरणं घोरमदृश्यत महद्बलम् ॥०३-२२१-३२॥
tatasteṣu pramūḍheṣu parvatāmbudasaṁnibham। nānāpraharaṇaṁ ghoramadṛśyata mahadbalam ॥03-221-32॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तेषु (teṣu) - in those; प्रमूढेषु (pramūḍheṣu) - confused; पर्वताम्बुदसंनिभम् (parvatāmbudasaṁnibham) - mountain and cloud-like; नाना (nānā) - various; प्रहरणम् (praharaṇam) - weapons; घोरम् (ghoram) - terrible; अदृश्यत (adṛśyata) - was seen; महद् (mahat) - great; बलम् (balam) - army;]
(Then, in those (who were) confused, a great army, mountain and cloud-like, with various weapons, terrible, was seen.)
Then, while they were confounded, a great and terrible army, resembling mountains and clouds and equipped with various weapons, was seen. (03-221-32)
तद्धि घोरमसङ्ख्येयं गर्जच्च विविधा गिरः। अभ्यद्रवद्रणे देवान्भगवन्तं च शङ्करम् ॥०३-२२१-३३॥
taddhi ghoramasaṅkhyeyaṁ garjacca vividhā giraḥ. abhyadravadraṇe devānbhagavantaṁ ca śaṅkaram ॥03-221-33॥
[तत् (tat) - that; हि (hi) - indeed; घोरम् (ghoram) - terrible; असङ्ख्येयम् (asaṅkhyeyam) - innumerable; गर्जत् (garjat) - roaring; च (ca) - and; विविधा (vividhā) - various; गिरः (giraḥ) - voices; अभ्यद्रवत् (abhyadravat) - rushed toward; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; देवान् (devān) - the gods; भगवन्तम् (bhagavantam) - the venerable; च (ca) - and; शङ्करम् (śaṅkaram) - Śaṅkara; (Śiva);]
(That indeed terrible, innumerable, roaring and various voices, rushed toward in battle the gods and the venerable Śaṅkara.)
That terrible and innumerable tumult, with roaring and various voices, rushed in battle against the gods and the venerable Śaṅkara. (03-221-33)
तैर्विसृष्टान्यनीकेषु बाणजालान्यनेकशः। पर्वताश्च शतघ्न्यश्च प्रासाश्च परिघा गदाः ॥०३-२२१-३४॥
tair visṛṣṭāni anīkeṣu bāṇajālāni anekaśaḥ। parvatāś ca śataghnyāś ca prāsāś ca parighā gadāḥ ॥03-221-34॥
[तैः (taiḥ) - by them; विसृष्टानि (visṛṣṭāni) - released; अनीकेषु (anīkeṣu) - in the armies; बाणजालानि (bāṇajālāni) - arrows-networks; अनेकशः (anekaśaḥ) - many times; पर्वताः (parvatāḥ) - mountains; च (ca) - and; शतघ्न्यः (śataghnyāḥ) - maces (hundred-slayers); च (ca) - and; प्रासाः (prāsāḥ) - spears; च (ca) - and; परिघाः (parighāḥ) - iron clubs; गदाः (gadāḥ) - maces;]
(By them, released in the armies, arrow-networks, many times; mountains and maces (hundred-slayers) and spears and iron clubs, maces.)
By them, in the armies, many volleys of arrows, mountains, hundred-slaying maces, spears, iron clubs, and maces were hurled. (03-221-34)
निपतद्भिश्च तैर्घोरैर्देवानीकं महायुधैः। क्षणेन व्यद्रवत्सर्वं विमुखं चाप्यदृश्यत ॥०३-२२१-३५॥
nipatadbhiś ca tair ghorair devānīkaṃ mahāyudhaiḥ। kṣaṇena vyadravat sarvaṃ vimukhaṃ cāpy adṛśyata ॥03-221-35॥
[निपतद्भिः (nipatadbhiḥ) - falling down; (by those who are falling;) च (ca) - and; तैः (taiḥ) - by those; घोरैः (ghoraiḥ) - terrible; देवानीकम् (devānīkam) - deva army; army of the gods; महायुधैः (mahāyudhaiḥ) - with mighty weapons; क्षणेन (kṣaṇena) - in a moment; व्यद्रवत् (vyadravat) - scattered; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; विमुखम् (vimukham) - facing away; turned about; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अदृश्यत (adṛśyata) - was seen; appeared;]
(And by those falling ones, terrible, with mighty weapons, the army of the gods in a moment all scattered, and turned about, also was seen.)
Struck by those terrible beings wielding mighty weapons, the army of the gods was seen to scatter in a moment, with all turning away. (03-221-35)
निकृत्तयोधनागाश्वं कृत्तायुधमहारथम्। दानवैरर्दितं सैन्यं देवानां विमुखं बभौ ॥०३-२२१-३६॥
nikṛttayodhanāgāśvaṃ kṛttāyudhamahāratham। dānavairarditaṃ sainyaṃ devānāṃ vimukhaṃ babhau ॥03-221-36॥

(With warriors, elephants, and horses severed, with weapons and great chariots destroyed, tormented by the Dānavas, the army of the gods, turned away, appeared.)
The army of the gods, its warriors, elephants, and horses slain, its weapons and chariots destroyed, tormented by the Dānavas, appeared routed. (03-221-36)
असुरैर्वध्यमानं तत्पावकैरिव काननम्। अपतद्दग्धभूयिष्ठं महाद्रुमवनं यथा ॥०३-२२१-३७॥
asurair vadhyamānaṃ tat pāvakair iva kānanam। apatad dagdha-bhūyiṣṭhaṃ mahā-druma-vanam yathā ॥03-221-37॥

(That, being slain by the Asuras, like a forest by fires, fell, burnt mostly, as (falls) a great tree-forest.)
As that was being slain by the Asuras, it fell, mostly burnt, like a great forest of trees consumed by fire. (03-221-37)
ते विभिन्नशिरोदेहाः प्रच्यवन्ते दिवौकसः। न नाथमध्यगच्छन्त वध्यमाना महारणे ॥०३-२२१-३८॥
te vividhnaśirodehāḥ pracyavante divaukasaḥ। na nāthamadhyagacchanta vadhyamānā mahāraṇe ॥03-221-38॥
[ते (te) - they; विभिन्नशिरोदेहाः (vibhinnashirodehāḥ) - with sundered heads and bodies; प्रच्यवन्ते (pracyavante) - fall down; दिवौकसः (divaukasaḥ) - celestial beings; न (na) - not; नाथम् (nātham) - to the protector; अध्यगच्छन्त (adhyagacchanta) - reached; वध्यमानाः (vadhyamānāḥ) - being slain; महारणे (mahāraṇe) - in the great battle;]
(They, with sundered heads and bodies, the celestial beings, fall down; not to the protector did they reach, being slain in the great battle.)
Those celestial beings, with their heads and bodies sundered, fell down—not reaching their protector, as they were being slain in the great battle. (03-221-38)
अथ तद्विद्रुतं सैन्यं दृष्ट्वा देवः पुरंदरः। आश्वासयन्नुवाचेदं बलवद्दानवार्दितम् ॥०३-२२१-३९॥
atha tadvidrutaṃ sainyaṃ dṛṣṭvā devaḥ puraṃdaraḥ। āśvāsayannuvācedaṃ balavad dānavārditam ॥03-221-39॥
[अथ (atha) - then; तद्विद्रुतं (tadvidrutam) - that routed; सैन्यं (sainyam) - army; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; देवः (devaḥ) - the god; पुरंदरः (puraṃdaraḥ) - Purandara (Indra); आश्वासयन् (āśvāsayan) - encouraging; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; इदं (idaṃ) - this; बलवत् (balavat) - strong; दानव-अर्दितम् (dānava-arditam) - oppressed by Dānavas;]
(Then, having seen that routed army, the god Purandara, encouraging (them), spoke this, (to the) strong (but) Dānava-oppressed (army).)
Then, having seen the army routed, the god Purandara (Indra), encouraging them, spoke these words to the strong army oppressed by the Dānavas. (03-221-39)
भयं त्यजत भद्रं वः शूराः शस्त्राणि गृह्णत। कुरुध्वं विक्रमे बुद्धिं मा वः काचिद्व्यथा भवेत् ॥०३-२२१-४०॥
bhayaṁ tyajata bhadraṁ vaḥ śūrāḥ śastrāṇi gṛhṇata। kurudhvaṁ vikrame buddhiṁ mā vaḥ kācid vyathā bhavet ॥03-221-40॥
[भयम् (bhayam) - fear; त्यजत (tyajata) - abandon (you all); भद्रं (bhadram) - welfare; वः (vaḥ) - for you; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - heroes; शस्त्राणि (śastrāṇi) - weapons; गृह्णत (gṛhṇata) - take up (you all); कुरुध्वं (kurudhvaṁ) - set (you all) विक्रमे (vikrame) - in vigor; बुद्धिम् (buddhim) - mind; मा (mā) - do not; वः (vaḥ) - to you; काचित् (kācid) - any; व्यथा (vyathā) - distress; भवेत् (bhavet) - may arise;]
(Fear abandon, welfare for you, heroes, weapons take up; set in vigor mind, do not to you any distress may arise (03-221-40))
Abandon fear; for your welfare, O heroes, take up your weapons. Set your mind on valor; let not any distress arise for you. (03-221-40)
जयतैनान्सुदुर्वृत्तान्दानवान्घोरदर्शनान्। अभिद्रवत भद्रं वो मया सह महासुरान् ॥०३-२२१-४१॥
jayatainān sudurvṛttān dānavān ghoradarśanān। abhidravata bhadraṃ vo mayā saha mahāsurān॥03-221-41॥
[जय (jaya) - conquer; एतान् (etān) - these; सुदुर्वृत्तान् (sudurvṛttān) - very ill-behaved; दानवान् (dānavān) - dānava demons; घोरदर्शनान् (ghoradarśanān) - terrible-to-behold; अभिद्रवत (abhidravata) - attack; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - auspiciousness; वः (vaḥ) - to you; मया (mayā) - with me; सह (saha) - together; महासुरान् (mahāsurān) - great asuras;]
(Conquer these very ill-behaved dānava demons, terrible-to-behold. Attack! Auspiciousness to you, together with me, (attack) the great asuras.)
Conquer these very ill-behaved, terrible-looking dānava demons. Attack, and may auspiciousness be with you. Together with me, (attack) the great asuras. (03-221-41)
शक्रस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा समाश्वस्ता दिवौकसः। दानवान्प्रत्ययुध्यन्त शक्रं कृत्वा व्यपाश्रयम् ॥०३-२२१-४२॥
śakrasya vacanaṃ śrutvā samāśvastā divaukasaḥ। dānavān pratyayudhyanta śakraṃ kṛtvā vyapāśrayam॥03-221-42॥
[शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Śakra (Indra); वचनं (vacanam) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; समाश्वस्ता (samāśvastā) - reassured; दिवौकसः (divaukasaḥ) - the dwellers of heaven; दानवान् (dānavān) - the Dānavas (demons); प्रत्ययुध्यन्त (pratyayudhyanta) - fought against; शक्रं (śakram) - Śakra (Indra); कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; व्यपाश्रयम् (vyapāśrayam) - as refuge;]
(Having heard the speech of Śakra, reassured the dwellers of heaven. The Dānavas they fought against, having made Śakra as refuge.)
Having heard the words of Śakra, the dwellers of heaven became reassured. Making Śakra their refuge, they fought against the Dānavas. (03-221-42)
ततस्ते त्रिदशाः सर्वे मरुतश्च महाबलाः। प्रत्युद्ययुर्महावेगाः साध्याश्च वसुभिः सह ॥०३-२२१-४३॥
tataste tridaśāḥ sarve marutaśca mahābalāḥ। pratyudyayurmahāvegāḥ sādhyāśca vasubhiḥ saha॥03-221-43॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; त्रिदशाः (tridaśāḥ) - the thirty-three gods; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मरुतश्च (marutaś ca) - and the Maruts; महाबलाः (mahābalāḥ) - of great strength; प्रत्युद्ययुः (pratyudyayuḥ) - approached; महावेगाः (mahāvegāḥ) - of great speed; साध्याश्च (sādhyāś ca) - and the Sādhyas; वसुभिः (vasubhiḥ) - with the Vasus; सह (saha) - together;]
(Then they, all the gods, and the Maruts of great strength, approached with the Sādhyas together with the Vasus, of great speed.)
Then all the gods, and the mighty Maruts, along with the Sādhyas and the Vasus, swiftly approached together. (03-221-43)
तैर्विसृष्टान्यनीकेषु क्रुद्धैः शस्त्राणि संयुगे। शराश्च दैत्यकायेषु पिबन्ति स्मासृगुल्बणम् ॥०३-२२१-४४॥
tair visṛṣṭāni anīkeṣu kruddhaiḥ śastrāṇi saṃyuge. śarāś ca daityakāyeṣu pibanti sma asṛg-ulbaṇam ॥03-221-44॥
[तैः (taiḥ) - by them; विसृष्टानि (visṛṣṭāni) - released; अनीकेषु (anīkeṣu) - in the armies; क्रुद्धैः (kruddhaiḥ) - by the enraged; शस्त्राणि (śastrāṇi) - weapons; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle; शराः (śarāḥ) - arrows; च (ca) - and; दैत्यकायेषु (daityakāyeṣu) - in the bodies of the daityas; पिबन्ति (pibanti) - drink; स्म (sma) - indeed; असृगुल्बणम् (asṛg-ulbaṇam) - abundant blood;]
(By them released (the) weapons in the armies by the enraged in battle; and arrows in the bodies of the daityas indeed drank abundant blood.)
Weapons released by the enraged in the armies during battle, and the arrows, drank abundant blood in the bodies of the daityas. (03-221-44)
तेषां देहान्विनिर्भिद्य शरास्ते निशितास्तदा। निष्पतन्तो अदृश्यन्त नगेभ्य इव पन्नगाः ॥०३-२२१-४५॥
teṣāṃ dehān vinirbhinya śarās te niśitās tadā। niṣpatanto adṛśyanta nagebhya iva pannagāḥ ॥03-221-45॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of them; देहान् (dehān) - bodies; विनिर्भिद्य (vinirbhinya) - having pierced through; शराः (śarāḥ) - arrows; ते (te) - those; निशिताः (niśitāḥ) - sharp; तदा (tadā) - then; निष्पतन्तः (niṣpatantaḥ) - emerging; अदृश्यन्त (adṛśyanta) - were seen; नगेभ्यः (nagebhyaḥ) - from mountains; इव (iva) - like; पन्नगाः (pannagāḥ) - serpents;]
(Of them bodies having pierced through arrows those sharp then emerging were seen from mountains like serpents.)
Then those sharp arrows, having pierced through their bodies, were seen emerging like serpents from the mountains. (03-221-45)
तानि दैत्यशरीराणि निर्भिन्नानि स्म सायकैः। अपतन्भूतले राजंश्छिन्नाभ्राणीव सर्वशः ॥०३-२२१-४६॥
tāni daityaśarīrāṇi nirbhinnāni sma sāyakaiḥ। apatan bhūtalē rājan chinnābhrāṇīva sarvaśaḥ ॥03-221-46॥
[तानि (tāni) - those (neuter plural); दैत्यशरीराणि (daityaśarīrāṇi) - the daityas' bodies; bodies of daityas (demons); निर्भिन्नानि (nirbhinnāni) - pierced; wounded; split asunder; स्म (sma) - certainly; indeed; (used for emphasis); सायकैः (sāyakaiḥ) - by arrows; अपतन् (apatan) - fell down; भूतले (bhūtalē) - on the ground; upon the earth; राजन् (rājan) - O king; च्छिन्नाभ्राणि (chinnābhrāṇi) - severed clouds; इव (iva) - like; as if; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - altogether; entirely; in all directions;]
(Those daityas' bodies, certainly pierced by arrows, fell down upon the ground, O king, altogether like severed clouds.)
O king, those bodies of the daityas, pierced through by arrows, all fell to the ground like severed clouds. (03-221-46)
ततस्तद्दानवं सैन्यं सर्वैर्देवगणैर्युधि। त्रासितं विविधैर्बाणैः कृतं चैव पराङ्मुखम् ॥०३-२२१-४७॥
tatas tad dānavam sainyam sarvair devagaṇaiḥ yudhi। trāsitaṃ vividhair bāṇaiḥ kṛtaṃ caiva parāṅmukham ॥03-221-47॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तत् (tat) - that; दानवम् (dānavam) - of demons; सैन्यम् (sainyam) - army; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; देवगणैः (devagaṇaiḥ) - by the groups of gods; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; त्रासितं (trāsitaṃ) - terrified; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - by various; बाणैः (bāṇaiḥ) - arrows; कृतं (kṛtam) - made; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पराङ्मुखम् (parāṅmukham) - turned away;]
(Then that army of demons by all groups of gods in battle, terrified by various arrows, was indeed made to turn away.)
Then that army of the demons was terrified by all the groups of gods in battle and, being struck by various arrows, was made to turn and flee. (03-221-47)
अथोत्क्रुष्टं तदा हृष्टैः सर्वैर्देवैरुदायुधैः। संहतानि च तूर्याणि तदा सर्वाण्यनेकशः ॥०३-२२१-४८॥
athotkruṣṭaṃ tadā hṛṣṭaiḥ sarvair devair udāyudhaiḥ। saṃhatāni ca tūryāṇi tadā sarvāṇy anekaśaḥ॥03-221-48॥
[अथ (atha) - then; उत्क्रुष्टं (utkruṣṭam) - shouted; cried aloud; तदा (tadā) - at that time; हृष्टैः (hṛṣṭaiḥ) - by the rejoicing; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; उदायुधैः (udāyudhaiḥ) - with uplifted weapons; संहतानि (saṃhatāni) - gathered together; sounded together; च (ca) - and; तूर्याणि (tūryāṇi) - musical instruments; तदा (tadā) - at that time; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; अनेकशः (anekaśaḥ) - in many ways; repeatedly;]
(Then, a shout was made at that time by all the rejoicing gods with uplifted weapons; and all the musical instruments, gathered together, at that time, in many ways.)
Then, at that moment, all the rejoicing gods with uplifted weapons shouted, and all the musical instruments resounded together in many ways. (03-221-48)
एवमन्योन्यसंयुक्तं युद्धमासीत्सुदारुणम्। देवानां दानवानां च मांसशोणितकर्दमम् ॥०३-२२१-४९॥
evam anyonya-saṁyuktaṁ yuddham āsīt sudāruṇam। devānāṁ dānavānāṁ ca māṁśa-śoṇita-kardamam॥03-221-49॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; अन्योन्य (anyonya) - with one another; संयुक्तं (saṁyuktam) - joined; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; आसीत् (āsīt) - there was; सुदारुणम् (sudāruṇam) - very terrible; देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; दानवानाम् (dānavānām) - of the asuras; च (ca) - and; मांस (māṁśa) - flesh; शोणित (śoṇita) - blood; कर्दमम् (kardamam) - mud;]
(Thus, with one another joined, the battle was very terrible, of the gods and asuras, flesh-blood-mud.)
Thus, a most terrible battle joined between one another took place, muddy with the flesh and blood of gods and asuras. (03-221-49)
अनयो देवलोकस्य सहसैव व्यदृश्यत। तथा हि दानवा घोरा विनिघ्नन्ति दिवौकसः ॥०३-२२१-५०॥
anayo devalokasya sahasaiva vyadṛśyata। tathā hi dānavā ghorā vinighnanti divaukasaḥ ॥03-221-50॥
[अनयो (anayo) - by these two; देवलोकस्य (devalokasya) - of the world of the gods; सहसैव (sahasaiva) - immediately; व्यदृश्यत (vyadṛśyata) - was seen; तथा (tathā) - thus; हि (hi) - indeed; दानवा (dānavā) - the Dānavas (demons); घोरा (ghorā) - terrible; विनिघ्नन्ति (vinighnanti) - are slaying; दिवौकसः (divaukasaḥ) - divinities;]
(By these two, of the world of the gods, immediately was seen. Thus indeed the terrible Dānavas are slaying the divinities.)
Through these two, the realm of the gods was at once seen; thus, indeed, the terrible Dānavas are slaying the gods. (03-221-50)
ततस्तूर्यप्रणादाश्च भेरीणां च महास्वनाः। बभूवुर्दानवेन्द्राणां सिंहनादाश्च दारुणाः ॥०३-२२१-५१॥
tatas tūryapraṇādāś ca bherīṇāṃ ca mahāsvanāḥ। babhūvur dānavendrāṇāṃ siṃhanādāś ca dāruṇāḥ॥03-221-51॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तूर्यप्रणादाः (tūryapraṇādāḥ) - blaring of trumpets; च (ca) - and; भेरीणां (bherīṇām) - of drums; च (ca) - and; महास्वनाः (mahāsvanāḥ) - great sounds; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became; दानवेन्द्राणां (dānavendrāṇām) - of the lords of the Dānavas; सिंहनादाः (siṃhanādāḥ) - lion-roars; च (ca) - and; दारुणाः (dāruṇāḥ) - terrible;]
(Then trumpet blasts and great sounds of drums occurred, and terrible lion-roars of the lords of the Dānavas.)
Then there arose trumpet blasts and great drum sounds, and the terrible lion-roars of the lords of the Dānavas. (03-221-51)
अथ दैत्यबलाद्घोरान्निष्पपात महाबलः। दानवो महिषो नाम प्रगृह्य विपुलं गिरिम् ॥०३-२२१-५२॥
atha daityabalād ghorān niṣpapāta mahābalaḥ। dānavaḥ mahiṣaḥ nāma pragṛhya vipulaṃ girim ॥03-221-52॥
[अथ (atha) - then; दैत्यबलात् (daityabalāt) - from the power of the daityas; घोरान् (ghorān) - terrible (one); निष्पपात (niṣpapāta) - descended; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - the mighty one; दानवः (dānavaḥ) - the demon; महिषः (mahiṣaḥ) - Mahiṣa; नाम (nāma) - by name; प्रगृह्य (pragṛhya) - having seized; विपुलम् (vipulam) - huge; गिरिम् (girim) - mountain;]
(Then, from the power of the Daityas, the terrible, mighty one descended—the demon by name Mahiṣa, having seized a huge mountain.)
Then, from the power of the Daityas, the mighty demon named Mahiṣa, having seized a huge mountain, descended in a terrible manner. (03-221-52)
ते तं घनैरिवादित्यं दृष्ट्वा सम्परिवारितम्। समुद्यतगिरिं राजन्व्यद्रवन्त दिवौकसः ॥०३-२२१-५३॥
te taṁ ghanair ivādityaṁ dṛṣṭvā samparivāritam। samudyatagiriṁ rājan vyadravanta divaukasaḥ ॥03-221-53॥
[ते (te) - they; तं (taṁ) - him; घनैः (ghanaiḥ) - with clouds; इव (iva) - like; आदित्यम् (ādityam) - the sun; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सम्परिवारितम् (samparivāritam) - completely surrounded; समुद्यतगिरिम् (samudyatagirim) - with an uplifted mountain; राजन् (rājan) - O king; व्यद्रवन्त (vyadravanta) - fled; दिवौकसः (divaukasaḥ) - the dwellers of heaven;]
(They, him, with clouds, like, the sun, having seen, completely surrounded, with an uplifted mountain, O king, fled, the dwellers of heaven.)
O king, the dwellers of heaven, having seen him, like the sun completely surrounded by clouds, with an uplifted mountain, fled. (03-221-53)
अथाभिद्रुत्य महिषो देवांश्चिक्षेप तं गिरिम्। पतता तेन गिरिणा देवसैन्यस्य पार्थिव ॥ भीमरूपेण निहतमयुतं प्रापतद्भुवि ॥०३-२२१-५४॥
athābhidrutya mahiṣo devāṁścikṣepa taṁ girim। patatā tena giriṇā deva-sainyasya pārthiva ॥ bhīma-rūpeṇa nihatam-ayutaṁ prāpatad bhuvi ॥03-221-54॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अभिद्रुत्य (abhidrutya) - having rushed impetuously; महिषः (mahiṣaḥ) - the buffalo demon (Mahisha); देवान् (devān) - the gods; च (ca) - and; चिक्षेप (cikṣepa) - hurled; तम् (tam) - that; गिरिम् (girim) - mountain; पतता (patatā) - falling; तेन (tena) - with that; गिरिणा (giriṇā) - with the mountain; देवसैन्यस्य (deva-sainyasya) - of the army of the gods; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; भीमरूपेण (bhīma-rūpeṇa) - in a terrible form; निहतमयुतम् (nihatam-ayutam) - ten thousand slain; प्रापतत् (prāpatat) - fell down; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground;]
(Then, having rushed impetuously, the buffalo (demon) hurled that mountain at the gods; with that falling mountain, O king, of the army of the gods, ten thousand slain in terrible form fell on the ground.)
Then, O king, the buffalo demon, having rushed forward, hurled a mountain at the gods; by that falling mountain, ten thousand of the gods’ army, in a dreadful form, fell slain to the ground. (03-221-54)
अथ तैर्दानवैः सार्धं महिषस्त्रासयन्सुरान्। अभ्यद्रवद्रणे तूर्णं सिंहः क्षुद्रमृगानिव ॥०३-२२१-५५॥
atha tair dānavaiḥ sārdhaṃ mahiṣaḥ trāsayan surān | abhyadravad raṇe tūrṇaṃ siṃhaḥ kṣudramṛgān iva ||03-221-55||
[अथ (atha) - then; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; दानवैः (dānavaiḥ) - by the Dānavas; सार्धं (sārdham) - together with; महिषः (mahiṣaḥ) - Mahisha (the buffalo demon); त्रासयन् (trāsayan) - frightening; सुरान् (surān) - the Devas (gods); अभ्यद्रवत् (abhyadravat) - charged towards; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; तूर्णं (tūrṇam) - quickly; सिंहः (siṃhaḥ) - like a lion; क्षुद्रमृगानिव (kṣudramṛgān iva) - like (iva) small animals;]
(Then, together with those Dānavas, Mahisha, frightening the Devas, charged quickly in battle like a lion (charges) at small animals.)
Then Mahisha, joined by those Dānavas, frightened the Devas and quickly charged at them in battle like a lion upon small animals. (03-221-55)
तमापतन्तं महिषं दृष्ट्वा सेन्द्रा दिवौकसः। व्यद्रवन्त रणे भीता विशीर्णायुधकेतनाः ॥०३-२२१-५६॥
tam āpatantaṃ mahiṣaṃ dṛṣṭvā sendrā divaukasaḥ। vyadravanta raṇe bhītā viśīrṇāyudha-ketanāḥ॥03-221-56॥
[तम् (tam) - him; (object case); आपतन्तम् (āpatantam) - approaching; महिषम् (mahiṣam) - buffalo; (demon) Mahisha; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सेन्द्राः (sendrāḥ) - with Indra; (together) with Indra; दिवौकसः (divaukasaḥ) - gods; dwellers in heaven; व्यद्रवन्त (vyadravanta) - fled; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; भीताः (bhītāḥ) - fearful; afraid; विशीर्णायुधकेतनाः (viśīrṇa-ayudha-ketanāḥ) - with broken weapons (āyudha) and standards (ketana);]
(Him approaching, the buffalo, having seen, with Indra, the gods fled in battle, fearful, with broken weapons and standards.)
The gods together with Indra, seeing the buffalo (Mahisha) approaching, fled in fear in the battle, their weapons and standards broken. (3-221-56)
ततः स महिषः क्रुद्धस्तूर्णं रुद्ररथं ययौ। अभिद्रुत्य च जग्राह रुद्रस्य रथकूबरम् ॥०३-२२१-५७॥
tataḥ sa mahiṣaḥ kruddhastuūrṇaṃ rudrarathaṃ yayau। abhidrutya ca jagrāha rudrasya rathakūbaram ॥03-221-57॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; महिषः (mahiṣaḥ) - the buffalo; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - enraged; तूर्णं (tūrṇam) - swiftly; रुद्ररथं (rudraratham) - Rudra's chariot; ययौ (yayau) - went; अभिद्रुत्य (abhidrutya) - having rushed toward; च (ca) - and; जग्राह (jagrāha) - seized; रुद्रस्य (rudrasya) - of Rudra; रथकूबरम् (rathakūbaram) - the pole of the chariot;]
(Then he, the buffalo, enraged, swiftly went to Rudra's chariot. Having rushed toward, and seized of Rudra the pole of the chariot.)

तथाभूते तु भगवान्नावधीन्महिषं रणे। सस्मार च तदा स्कन्दं मृत्युं तस्य दुरात्मनः ॥०३-२२१-६०॥
tathābhūte tu bhagavān nāvadhīn mahiṣaṃ raṇe। sasmāra ca tadā skandaṃ mṛtyuṃ tasya durātmanaḥ॥03-221-60॥

(When it had thus happened, but the revered one did not kill the buffalo-demon in battle. And then he remembered Skanda, the death of him, the wicked-souled one.)
When this had occurred, the revered one did not kill the buffalo-demon in battle, but then he remembered Skanda, who would be the death of that wicked-souled one. (03-221-60)
महिषोऽपि रथं दृष्ट्वा रौद्रं रुद्रस्य नानदत्। देवान्सन्त्रासयंश्चापि दैत्यांश्चापि प्रहर्षयन् ॥०३-२२१-६१॥
mahiṣo'pi rathaṃ dṛṣṭvā raudraṃ rudrasya nānadat। devānsantrāsayaṃścāpi daityāṃścāpi praharṣayan ॥03-221-61॥

(The buffalo-demon also, having seen Rudra’s terrible chariot, roared, frightening the gods and also delighting the Daityas.)
Mahisha, upon seeing Rudra’s dreadful chariot, let out a roar, frightening the gods and delighting the Daityas as well. (03-221-61)
ततस्तस्मिन्भये घोरे देवानां समुपस्थिते। आजगाम महासेनः क्रोधात्सूर्य इव ज्वलन् ॥०३-२२१-६२॥
tatas tasmin bhaye ghore devānāṃ samupasthite. ājagāma mahāsenaḥ krodhāt sūrya iva jvalan ॥03-221-62॥

(Then, in that terrible fear of the gods having arisen, Mahāsena arrived, out of anger, blazing like the sun.)

लोहिताम्बरसंवीतो लोहितस्रग्विभूषणः। लोहितास्यो महाबाहुर्हिरण्यकवचः प्रभुः ॥०३-२२१-६३॥

स चापि तां प्रज्वलितां महिषस्य विदारिणीम्। मुमोच शक्तिं राजेन्द्र महासेनो महाबलः ॥०३-२२१-६५॥

सा मुक्ताभ्यहनच्छक्तिर्महिषस्य शिरो महत्। पपात भिन्ने शिरसि महिषस्त्यक्तजीवितः ॥०३-२२१-६६॥
sā muktābhyahanacchaktir mahiṣasya śiro mahat। papāta bhinne śirasi mahiṣas tyaktajīvitaḥ ॥03-221-66॥

(She released (her) spear; struck against the great head of the buffalo. With the head broken, the buffalo, having abandoned life, fell.)

(Thrown-not thrown but that spear having slain enemies by thousands, having reached Skanda's hand, is seen by gods and dānavas.)
But that spear, whether thrown or unthrown, after slaying thousands of enemies, having reached Skanda’s hand, is seen by gods and dānavas. (03-221-67)
प्रायः शरैर्विनिहता महासेनेन धीमता। शेषा दैत्यगणा घोरा भीतास्त्रस्ता दुरासदैः ॥ स्कन्दस्य पार्षदैर्हत्वा भक्षिताः शतसङ्घशः ॥०३-२२१-६८॥

(Mostly, by arrows, slain by Mahāsena, wise, the remaining assemblies of Daityas, terrible, frightened, terrified by those hard to approach, of Skanda, by attendants, having killed, eaten by groups of hundreds.)
Mostly, the Daityas were slain by the wise Mahāsena with arrows; the remaining terrible Daitya hosts, terrified and fearful of those hard to approach, were killed and eaten in groups of hundreds by the attendants of Skanda. (03-221-68)
दानवान्भक्षयन्तस्ते प्रपिबन्तश्च शोणितम्। क्षणान्निर्दानवं सर्वमकार्षुर्भृशहर्षिताः ॥०३-२२१-६९॥
dānavān bhakṣayantaḥ te prapibantaś ca śoṇitam। kṣaṇāt nirdānavam sarvam akāṛṣuḥ bhṛśa-harṣitāḥ॥03-221-69॥

(Just as the Sun (removes) darkness, fire (consumes) trees, the bird (the Sun) (disperses) clouds, so Skanda by his own strength, famed, conquered enemies.)

सम्पूज्यमानस्त्रिदशैरभिवाद्य महेश्वरम्। शुशुभे कृत्तिकापुत्रः प्रकीर्णांशुरिवांशुमान् ॥०३-२२१-७१॥
sampūjyamānas tridaśair abhivādya maheśvaram। śuśubhe kṛttikāputraḥ prakīrṇāṃśur ivāṃśumān ॥03-221-71॥

(Being revered by the gods, having bowed to the great lord, Kārttikeya shone, with scattered rays, like the radiant one (the Sun).)
Having been worshipped by the gods and having bowed to Maheśvara, the son of Kṛttikā (Kārttikeya) shone with scattered rays like the Sun. (03-221-71)
नष्टशत्रुर्यदा स्कन्दः प्रयातश्च महेश्वरम्। अथाब्रवीन्महासेनं परिष्वज्य पुरंदरः ॥०३-२२१-७२॥
naṣṭaśatrur yadā skandaḥ prayātaś ca maheśvaram। athābravīn mahāsenaṃ pariṣvajya puraṃdaraḥ ॥03-221-72॥

(The enemy having been destroyed, when Skanda had gone to Maheśvara, then Purandara, having embraced Mahāsena, said: (03-221-72))

ब्रह्मदत्तवरः स्कन्द त्वयायं महिषो हतः। देवास्तृणमया यस्य बभूवुर्जयतां वर ॥ सोऽयं त्वया महाबाहो शमितो देवकण्टकः ॥०३-२२१-७३॥
brahmadattavaraḥ skanda tvayāyaṃ mahiṣo hataḥ। devās tṛṇamayā yasya babhūvur jayatāṃ vara॥ so'yaṃ tvayā mahābāho śamito devakaṇṭakaḥ॥03-221-73॥

(One blessed by Brahmā, O Skanda, by you this buffalo (demon) was slain; the gods, made of grass, of whom became (he), O best among victors. He, this one, by you, O mighty-armed, was subdued, the thorn of the gods (the gods’ tormentor).)
O Skanda, the buffalo-demon, blessed by Brahmā and who turned the gods into grass, was slain by you. You, O mighty-armed, have subdued this thorn of the gods. (03-221-73)
शतं महिषतुल्यानां दानवानां त्वया रणे। निहतं देवशत्रूणां यैर्वयं पूर्वतापिताः ॥०३-२२१-७४॥
śataṃ mahiṣatulyānāṃ dānavānāṃ tvayā raṇe। nihataṃ devaśatrūṇāṃ yairvayaṃ pūrvatāpitāḥ॥03-221-74॥
[शतम् (śatam) - hundred; महिषतुल्यानाम् (mahiṣatulyānām) - equal to buffaloes; दानवानाम् (dānavānām) - of demons; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; निहतम् (nihatam) - slain; देवशत्रूणाम् (devaśatrūṇām) - of the enemies of the gods; यैः (yaiḥ) - by whom; वयम् (vayam) - we; पूर्वतापिताः (pūrvatāpitāḥ) - formerly tormented;]
(A hundred demons equal to buffaloes, by you in battle, slain, of the enemies of the gods, by whom we formerly tormented.)
You have slain in battle a hundred demons equal to buffaloes—enemies of the gods—by whom we had formerly been tormented. (03-221-74)
तावकैर्भक्षिताश्चान्ये दानवाः शतसङ्घशः। अजेयस्त्वं रणेऽरीणामुमापतिरिव प्रभुः ॥०३-२२१-७५॥
tāvakairbhakṣitāścānye dānavāḥ śatasaṅghaśaḥ। ajeyastvaṃ raṇe'rīṇāmumāpativiva prabhuḥ ॥03-221-75॥
[तावकैः (tāvakaiḥ) - by your (men); भक्षिताः (bhakṣitāḥ) - devoured; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; दानवाः (dānavāḥ) - Dānavas (demons); शतसङ्घशः (śata-saṅghaśaḥ) - in hundreds of groups; अजेयः (ajeyaḥ) - invincible; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; अरीणाम् (arīṇām) - of enemies; उमापतिरिव (umāpatiḥ iva) - like Umāpati (Śiva); प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - lord;]
(By your (men), others of the Dānavas, in hundreds of groups, have been devoured; you are invincible in battle among enemies, like Umāpati (Śiva), lord.)
Hundreds of other Dānavas have been devoured by your followers; you are as invincible among enemies in battle as Umāpati (Lord Śiva) himself. (03-221-75)
एतत्ते प्रथमं देव ख्यातं कर्म भविष्यति। त्रिषु लोकेषु कीर्तिश्च तवाक्षय्या भविष्यति ॥ वशगाश्च भविष्यन्ति सुरास्तव सुरात्मज ॥०३-२२१-७६॥
etatte prathamaṃ deva khyātaṃ karma bhaviṣyati। triṣu lokeṣu kīrtiśca tavākṣayyā bhaviṣyati॥ vaśagāśca bhaviṣyanti surās tava surātmaja॥03-221-76॥

(This to you first, O god, renowned act will be. In the three worlds, fame also, your imperishable, will be. Under control also will be the gods, your O son of a god, (03-221-76))
O god, this act will be your first renowned deed. In the three worlds, your fame too will be imperishable. And the gods, O son of a god, will be under your control. (03-221-76)
महासेनेत्येवमुक्त्वा निवृत्तः सह दैवतैः। अनुज्ञातो भगवता त्र्यम्बकेन शचीपतिः ॥०३-२२१-७७॥
mahāsenety evam uktvā nivṛttaḥ saha daivataiḥ। anujñāto bhagavatā tryambakena śacīpatiḥ ॥03-221-77॥
[महासेन इति एवम् उक्त्वा (mahāsena iti evam uktvā) - having thus spoken 'Mahāsena'; निवृत्तः (nivṛttaḥ) - departed; सह दैवतैः (saha daivataiḥ) - together with the gods; अनुज्ञातः (anujñātaḥ) - permitted; भगवता त्र्यम्बकेन (bhagavatā tryambakena) - by the blessed Tryambaka (three-eyed, Śiva); शचीपतिः (śacīpatiḥ) - the lord of Śacī (Indra);]
(Having thus spoken 'Mahāsena,' having departed together with the gods, having been permitted by the blessed Tryambaka, the lord of Śacī (Indra).)
After thus speaking 'Mahāsena,' Śacī's lord (Indra), permitted by the blessed Tryambaka (Śiva), departed together with the gods. (03-221-77)
गतो भद्रवटं रुद्रो निवृत्ताश्च दिवौकसः। उक्ताश्च देवा रुद्रेण स्कन्दं पश्यत मामिव ॥०३-२२१-७८॥
gato bhadravaṭaṃ rudro nivṛttāś ca divaukasaḥ। uktāś ca devā rudreṇa skandaṃ paśyata mām iva ॥03-221-78॥
[गतः (gataḥ) - gone; भद्रवटम् (bhadravaṭam) - to the Bhadravaṭa (sacred banyan tree); रुद्रः (rudraḥ) - Rudra; निवृत्ताः (nivṛttāḥ) - having returned; च (ca) - and; दिवौकसः (divaukasaḥ) - the dwellers of heaven; उक्ताः (uktāḥ) - addressed; च (ca) - and; देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; रुद्रेण (rudreṇa) - by Rudra; स्कन्दम् (skandam) - Skanda; पश्यत (paśyata) - see; माम् (mām) - me; इव (iva) - like;]
(Gone to Bhadravaṭa Rudra, having returned also the dwellers of heaven; addressed also gods by Rudra: "Skanda, see like me." (03-221-78))
Rudra has gone to Bhadravaṭa, and the gods have returned to heaven; Rudra also addressed the gods, saying, "Behold Skanda, as you behold me." (03-221-78)
स हत्वा दानवगणान्पूज्यमानो महर्षिभिः। एकाह्नैवाजयत्सर्वं त्रैलोक्यं वह्निनन्दनः ॥०३-२२१-७९॥
sa hatvā dānavagaṇān pūjyamānaḥ maharṣibhiḥ। ekāhnā eva ajayat sarvaṃ trailokyaṃ vahninandanaḥ॥03-221-79॥
[स (sa) - he; हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; दानवगणान् (dānavagaṇān) - the groups of Dānavas (demons); पूज्यमानः (pūjyamānaḥ) - being honored; महर्षिभिः (maharṣibhiḥ) - by the great sages; एकाह्नैव (ekāhnā eva) - in just one day only; अजयत् (ajayat) - conquered; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; त्रैलोक्यं (trailokyaṃ) - the three worlds; वह्निनन्दनः (vahninandanaḥ) - the son of Agni;]
(He, having slain the groups of Dānavas, being honored by the great sages, in just one day only, conquered all the three worlds, the son of Agni.)
Having slain the hosts of Dānavas and honored by the great sages, the son of Agni conquered all the three worlds in a single day. (03-221-79)
स्कन्दस्य य इदं जन्म पठते सुसमाहितः। स पुष्टिमिह सम्प्राप्य स्कन्दसालोक्यतामियात् ॥०३-२२१-८०॥
skandasya ya idaṃ janma paṭhate susamāhitaḥ। sa puṣṭim iha samprāpya skandasalokyatām iyāt॥03-221-80॥
[स्कन्दस्य (skandasya) - of Skanda; य (ya) - who; इदं (idaṃ) - this; जन्म (janma) - birth; पठते (paṭhate) - recites; सुसमाहितः (susamāhitaḥ) - with great attention; स (sa) - he; पुष्टिम् (puṣṭim) - prosperity; इह (iha) - here; सम्प्राप्य (samprāpya) - having obtained; स्कन्दसालोक्यताम् (skandasalokyatām) - the state of residing in the same world as Skanda; इयात् (iyāt) - attains;]
(Of Skanda who this birth recites with great attention, he prosperity here having obtained, the state of residing in the same world as Skanda attains.)
Whoever recites this account of Skanda's birth with great concentration, after gaining prosperity here, attains to residence in the same realm as Skanda. (03-221-80)
