upāsīneṣu vipreṣu pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu। draupadī satyabhāmā ca viviśāte tadā samam॥ jāhasyamāne suprīte sukhaṃ tatra niṣīdatuḥ॥03-222-1॥
[उपासीनेषु (upāsīneṣu) - when seated near; विप्रेषु (vipreṣu) - amidst the Brāhmaṇas; पाण्डवेषु (pāṇḍaveṣu) - among the Pāṇḍavas; महात्मसु (mahātmasu) - with the great souls; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; सत्यभामा (satyabhāmā) - Satyabhāmā; च (ca) - and; विविशाते (viviśāte) - both entered; तदा (tadā) - then; समम् (samam) - together; जाहस्यमाने (jāhasyamāne) - while laughter (was going on); सुप्रीते (suprīte) - being very pleased; सुखं (sukhaṃ) - happily; तत्र (tatra) - there; निषीदतुः (niṣīdatuḥ) - the two sat down;]
(When seated near the Brāhmaṇas, among the Pāṇḍavas, with the great souls, Draupadī and Satyabhāmā both then together entered. While laughter was going on, being very pleased, happily there the two sat down. (03-222-1))
While the Brāhmaṇas and great-souled Pāṇḍavas were seated, Draupadī and Satyabhāmā entered together and, amid much cheerful laughter, the two happily sat down there. (03-222-1)
चिरस्य दृष्ट्वा राजेन्द्र तेऽन्योन्यस्य प्रियंवदे। कथयामासतुश्चित्राः कथाः कुरुयदुक्षिताम् ॥०३-२२२-२॥

O king, after seeing each other again after a long time, the two of them, speaking pleasantly to one another, recounted many varied stories about the Kurus and the Yadus. (03-222-2)
अथाब्रवीत्सत्यभामा कृष्णस्य महिषी प्रिया। सात्राजिती याज्ञसेनीं रहसीदं सुमध्यमा ॥०३-२२२-३॥
athābravītsatyabhāmā kṛṣṇasya mahiṣī priyā। sātrājitī yājñasenīṃ rahasīdaṃ sumadhyamā ॥03-222-3॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; सत्यभामा (satyabhāmā) - Satyabhama; कृष्णस्य (kṛṣṇasya) - of Krishna; महिषी (mahiṣī) - queen; wife; प्रिया (priyā) - beloved; सात्राजिती (sātrājitī) - daughter of Satrajit; याज्ञसेनीं (yājñasenīṃ) - Yajnaseni (Draupadi – daughter of Yajnasena); रहसि (rahasi) - in private; इदं (idaṃ) - this; सुमध्यमा (sumadhyamā) - the slender-waisted (one);]
(Then spoke Satyabhama, Krishna’s beloved queen, daughter of Satrajit, to Yajnaseni (Draupadi) in private, this, O slender-waisted one.)
Then Satyabhama, the beloved queen of Krishna and daughter of Satrajit, spoke these words in private to Yajnaseni (Draupadi), O slender-waisted lady. (03-222-3)
केन द्रौपदि वृत्तेन पाण्डवानुपतिष्ठसि। लोकपालोपमान्वीरान्यूनः परमसंमतान् ॥ कथं च वशगास्तुभ्यं न कुप्यन्ति च ते शुभे ॥०३-२२२-४॥
kena draupadi vṛttena pāṇḍavānupatiṣṭhasi। lokapālopamān vīrān yūnaḥ paramasaṃmatān॥ kathaṃ ca vaśagās tubhyaṃ na kupyanti ca te śubhe॥03-222-4॥
[केन (kena) - by what; द्रौपदि (draupadi) - O Draupadi; वृत्तेन (vṛttena) - conduct; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; उपतिष्ठसि (upatiṣṭhasi) - you attend; लोकपालोपमान् (lokapālopamān) - comparable to the guardians of the world; वीरान् (vīrān) - heroes; यूनः (yūnaḥ) - youthful; परमसंमतान् (paramasaṃmatān) - highly esteemed; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; च (ca) - and; वशगाः (vaśagāḥ) - under control; तुभ्यं (tubhyaṃ) - to you; न (na) - not; कुप्यन्ति (kupyanti) - become angry; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - they; शुभे (śubhe) - O auspicious one;]
(By what conduct, O Draupadi, do you attend the Pāṇḍavas, the youthful heroes comparable to the guardians of the world, highly esteemed? And how are they under your control, do not become angry with you, O auspicious one? (03-222-4))
By what manner or conduct, O Draupadi, do you serve the Pāṇḍavas—the youthful and highly esteemed heroes, comparable to the guardians of the world? And how is it that they, being under your influence, do not become angry with you, O auspicious one? (03-222-4)
तव वश्या हि सततं पाण्डवाः प्रियदर्शने। मुखप्रेक्षाश्च ते सर्वे तत्त्वमेतद्ब्रवीहि मे ॥०३-२२२-५॥
tava vaśyā hi satataṁ pāṇḍavāḥ priyadarśane. mukhaprekṣāś ca te sarve tattvam etad bravīhi me ॥03-222-5॥
[तव (tava) - of you; वश्या (vaśyāḥ) - obedient; हि (hi) - indeed; सततं (satatam) - always; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the sons of Pāṇḍu; प्रियदर्शने (priyadarśane) - O pleasant-looking one; मुखप्रेक्षाः (mukhaprekṣāḥ) - looking towards your face; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; सर्वे (sarve) - all; तत्त्वम् (tattvam) - truth; एतत् (etad) - this; ब्रवीहि (bravīhi) - tell; मे (me) - to me;]
(Of you obedient indeed always the sons of Pāṇḍu, O pleasant-looking one; towards your face and your all; this truth tell to me.)
The sons of Pāṇḍu are indeed always obedient to you, O pleasant-looking one; all of them look towards your face. Tell me this truth. (03-222-5)
व्रतचर्या तपो वापि स्नानमन्त्रौषधानि वा। विद्यावीर्यं मूलवीर्यं जपहोमस्तथागदाः ॥०३-२२२-६॥
vratacaryā tapo vāpi snāna-mantrauṣadhāni vā। vidyā-vīryaṃ mūla-vīryaṃ japa-homas tathāgadāḥ ॥03-222-6॥

मम आचक्ष्व पाञ्चालि यशस्यं भगवेदनम्। येन कृष्णे भवेन्नित्यं मम कृष्णो वशानुगः ॥०३-२२२-७॥
mama ācakṣva pāñcāli yaśasyaṃ bhagavedanam। yena kṛṣṇe bhaven nityaṃ mama kṛṣṇo vaśānugaḥ॥03-222-7॥
[मम (mama) - my; आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - state; पाञ्चालि (pāñcāli) - O Pāñcālī; यशस्यं (yaśasyaṃ) - glorious; भगवेदनम् (bhagavedanam) - means of knowledge of fortune (the divine); येन (yena) - by which; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - in Kṛṣṇa; भवेत् (bhavet) - may there be; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; मम (mama) - my; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; वशानुगः (vaśānugaḥ) - obedient to will;]
(My state O Pāñcālī, glorious means of knowledge of fortune; by which in Kṛṣṇa may there always be my Kṛṣṇa obedient to (my) will.)
O Pāñcālī, state to me the glorious means by which Kṛṣṇa may always remain obedient to my will. (03-222-7)
एवमुक्त्वा सत्यभामा विरराम यशस्विनी। पतिव्रता महाभागा द्रौपदी प्रत्युवाच ताम् ॥०३-२२२-८॥
evam uktvā satyabhāmā virarāma yaśasvinī। pativratā mahābhāgā draupadī pratyuvāca tām ॥03-222-8॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; सत्यभामा (satyabhāmā) - Satyabhama; विरराम (virarāma) - became silent; यशस्विनी (yaśasvinī) - the illustrious; पтив्रता (pativratā) - devoted to husband; महाभागा (mahābhāgā) - highly fortunate; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadi; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; ताम् (tām) - to her;]
(Thus having spoken, Satyabhama, the illustrious, became silent. Devoted to her husband, highly fortunate Draupadi replied to her.)
After saying this, the illustrious Satyabhama became silent. The devoted and highly fortunate Draupadi replied to her. (03-222-8)
असत्स्त्रीणां समाचारं सत्ये मामनुपृच्छसि। असदाचरिते मार्गे कथं स्यादनुकीर्तनम् ॥०३-२२२-९॥
asat-strīṇāṃ samācāraṃ satye mām anupṛcchasi। asadācārite mārge kathaṃ syād anukīrtanam ॥03-222-9॥
[असत्स्त्रीणां (asat-strīṇām) - of unvirtuous women; समाचारं (samācāram) - conduct; सत्ये (satye) - for the truth; माम् (mām) - me; अनुपृच्छसि (anupṛcchasi) - you ask; असदाचरिते (asadācārite) - in wrongful practice; मार्गे (mārge) - in the path; कथम् (katham) - how; स्यात् (syāt) - can there be; अनुकीर्तनम् (anukīrtanam) - recitation; ॥०३-२२२-९॥ (॥03-222-9॥) -;]
(Of unvirtuous women conduct for the truth me you ask; in wrongful practice in the path how can there be recitation?)
You ask me about the conduct of unvirtuous women for the sake of truth; how can there be any recounting in the path of wrongful conduct? (03-222-9)
अनुप्रश्नः संशयो वा नैतत्त्वय्युपपद्यते। तथा ह्युपेता बुद्ध्या त्वं कृष्णस्य महिषी प्रिया ॥०३-२२२-१०॥
anupraśnaḥ saṁśayo vā naitat-tavy-upapadyate. tathā hy-upetā buddhyā tvaṁ kṛṣṇasya mahiṣī priyā ॥03-222-10॥
[अनुप्रश्नः (anupraśnaḥ) - follow-up question; inquiry; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt; वा (vā) - or; न (na) - not; एतत्त्वय्युपपद्यते (etattvayy-upapadyate) - this befits (is appropriate) for you; तथा (tathā) - thus; हि (hi) - indeed; उपेता (upetā) - endowed (with); बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - intelligence; wisdom; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; कृष्णस्य (kṛṣṇasya) - of Kṛṣṇa; महिषी (mahiṣī) - queen; chief wife; प्रिया (priyā) - beloved;]
(Follow-up question or doubt, this does not befit you. Thus, indeed, endowed with intelligence, you, of Kṛṣṇa, (as the) queen, beloved.)
A further question or doubt does not befit you. For you are endowed with intelligence and are the beloved queen of Kṛṣṇa. (03-222-10)
यदैव भर्ता जानीयान्मन्त्रमूलपरां स्त्रियम्। उद्विजेत तदैवास्याः सर्पाद्वेश्मगतादिव ॥०३-२२२-११॥
yadaiva bhartā jānīyān mantramūlaparāṃ striyam। udvijeta tadaivāsyāḥ sarpād veṣmagatād iva ॥03-222-11॥
[यदैव (yadaiva) - when exactly; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; जानीयात् (jānīyāt) - should know; मन्त्रमूलपराम् (mantramūlaparām) - devoted to the root (source) of secret counsel; स्त्रियम् (striyam) - woman; उद्विजेत (udvijeta) - should shrink back; तदैव (tadaiva) - at that very moment; अस्याः (asyāḥ) - from her; सर्पात् (sarpāt) - from a snake; वेश्मगतात् (veṣmagatāt) - entered into the house; इव (iva) - as if;]
(When exactly the husband should know the woman devoted to the root of secret counsel, he should shrink back at that very moment from her, as if from a snake entered into the house.)
As soon as a husband discovers that a woman is devoted to the source of secret counsel, he should at once shrink away from her, just as from a snake that has entered the house. (03-222-11)
उद्विग्नस्य कुतः शान्तिरशान्तस्य कुतः सुखम्। न जातु वशगो भर्ता स्त्रियाः स्यान्मन्त्रकारणात् ॥०३-२२२-१२॥
udvignasya kutaḥ śāntiraśāntasya kutaḥ sukham। na jātu vaśago bhartā striyāḥ syānmantrakāraṇāt॥03-222-12॥
[उद्विग्नस्य (udvignasya) - of the agitated; कुतः (kutaḥ) - whence; शान्तिः (śāntiḥ) - peace; अशान्तस्य (aśāntasya) - of the unpeaceful; कुतः (kutaḥ) - whence; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; न (na) - not; जातु (jātu) - ever; वशगः (vaśagaḥ) - subject to control; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; स्त्रियाः (striyāḥ) - of a woman; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; मन्त्रकारणात् (mantrakāraṇāt) - due to spells (incantations);]
(Of the agitated, whence peace? Of the unpeaceful, whence happiness? Never indeed may a husband become subject to a woman due to spells.)
How can a disturbed person have peace? How can an unpeaceful person have happiness? The husband will never come under a woman's control by means of incantations. (03-222-12)
अमित्रप्रहितांश्चापि गदान्परमदारुणान्। मूलप्रवादैर्हि विषं प्रयच्छन्ति जिघांसवः ॥०३-२२२-१३॥
amitra-prahitāṁś cāpi gadān paramadāruṇān। mūla-pravādair hi viṣam prayacchanti jighāṁsavaḥ ॥03-222-13॥
[अमित्रप्रहितान् (amitra-prahitān) - sent by enemies; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; गदान् (gadān) - diseases; परम (parama) - extremely; दारुणान् (dāruṇān) - cruel; मूलप्रवादैः (mūla-pravādaiḥ) - by root rumors; हि (hi) - indeed; विषम् (viṣam) - poison; प्रयच्छन्ति (prayacchanti) - they give; जिघांसवः (jighāṁsavaḥ) - those desiring to kill;]
(Sent by enemies and also extremely cruel diseases, by root rumors indeed poison they give, those desiring to kill.)
Those desiring to kill give poison in the form of extremely cruel diseases sent by enemies and spread through root rumors. (03-222-13)
जिह्वया यानि पुरुषस्त्वचा वाप्युपसेवते। तत्र चूर्णानि दत्तानि हन्युः क्षिप्रमसंशयम् ॥०३-२२२-१४॥
jihvayā yāni puruṣas tvacā vāpy upasevate। tatra cūrṇāni dattāni hanyuḥ kṣipram asaṃśayam ॥03-222-14॥
[जिह्वया (jihvayā) - with (the) tongue; यानि (yāni) - which; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - a man; त्वचा (tvacā) - with (the) skin; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - also; उपसेवते (upasevate) - enjoys; तत्र (tatra) - there; चूर्णानि (cūrṇāni) - powders; दत्तानि (dattāni) - that have been placed; हन्युः (hanyuḥ) - would destroy; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; असंशयम् (asaṃśayam) - without doubt;]
(With (the) tongue which a man enjoys, or also with (the) skin, there the powders that have been placed would destroy quickly without doubt.)
The powders placed where a man enjoys with his tongue or even with his skin would rapidly destroy (him) without doubt. (03-222-14)
जलोदरसमायुक्ताः श्वित्रिणः पलितास्तथा। अपुमांसः कृताः स्त्रीभिर्जडान्धबधिरास्तथा ॥०३-२२२-१५॥
jalodarasamāyuktāḥ śvitriṇaḥ palitās tathā। apumāṁsaḥ kṛtāḥ strībhiḥ jaḍāndhabadhirās tathā ॥03-222-15॥
[जलोदरसमायुक्ताः (jalodarasamāyuktāḥ) - afflicted with abdominal dropsy; श्वित्रिणः (śvitriṇaḥ) - those with leucoderma; पलिताः (palitāḥ) - the grey-haired ones; तथा (tathā) - also; अपुमांसः (apumāṁsaḥ) - castrated men; कृताः (kṛtāḥ) - made; स्त्रीभिः (strībhiḥ) - by women; जडान्धबधिराः (jaḍāndhabadhirāḥ) - the dull, the blind, the deaf; तथा (tathā) - also;]
(Afflicted with abdominal dropsy, those with leucoderma, the grey-haired ones also; castrated men made by women, the dull, the blind, the deaf also.)
Those suffering from abdominal dropsy, people with leucoderma, the grey-haired, castrated men made so by women, the dull, the blind, and the deaf as well. (03-222-15)
पापानुगास्तु पापास्ताः पतीनुपसृजन्त्युत। न जातु विप्रियं भर्तुः स्त्रिया कार्यं कथञ्चन ॥०३-२२२-१६॥
pāpānugāstu pāpāstāḥ patīnupasṛjantyuta। na jātu vipriyaṃ bhartuḥ striyā kāryaṃ kathaṃcana॥03-222-16॥
[पापानुगाः (pāpānugāḥ) - those who follow evil; तु (tu) - but; पापाः (pāpāḥ) - wicked ones; ताः (tāḥ) - they (women); पतीन् (patīn) - husbands (accusative plural); उपसृजन्ति (upasṛjanti) - abandon; उत (uta) - indeed; न (na) - not; जातु (jātu) - ever; विप्रियम् (vipriyam) - disagreeable; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of husband; स्त्रिया (striyā) - by a woman; कार्यं (kāryam) - should be done; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(Those wicked women who follow evil but do indeed abandon husbands. By a woman, disagreeable to the husband should not ever be done in any way.)
But it is only those wicked women who follow evil that abandon their husbands; a woman should never do anything displeasing to her husband in any way. (03-222-16)
वर्ताम्यहं तु यां वृत्तिं पाण्डवेषु महात्मसु। तां सर्वां शृणु मे सत्यां सत्यभामे यशस्विनि ॥०३-२२२-१७॥
vartāmyahaṁ tu yāṁ vṛttiṁ pāṇḍaveṣu mahātmasu। tāṁ sarvāṁ śṛṇu me satyāṁ satyabhāme yaśasvini ॥03-222-17॥
[वर्तामि (vartāmi) - I exist; अहम् (aham) - I; तु (tu) - but; याम् (yām) - which; वृत्तिम् (vṛttim) - state; conduct; पाण्डवेषु (pāṇḍaveṣu) - among the Pāṇḍavas; महात्मसु (mahātmasu) - among the high-souled; ताम् (tām) - that; सर्वाम् (sarvām) - all; entire; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; मे (me) - from me; सत्याम् (satyām) - true; सत्यभामे (satyabhāme) - O Satyabhāmā; यशस्विनि (yaśasvini) - glorious lady;]
(I exist I, but which state among the Pāṇḍavas, among the high-souled, that entire (state) hear from me, true, O Satyabhāmā, glorious lady.)
But the manner in which I live among the high-souled Pāṇḍavas, hear that entire (truth) from me, O Satyabhāmā, illustrious lady. (03-222-17)
अहङ्कारं विहायाहं कामक्रोधौ च सर्वदा। सदारान्पाण्डवान्नित्यं प्रयतोपचराम्यहम् ॥०३-२२२-१८॥
ahaṅkāraṃ vihāyāhaṃ kāmakrodhau ca sarvadā। sadārān pāṇḍavān nityaṃ prayatopacarāmy aham ॥03-222-18॥
[अहङ्कारम् (ahaṅkāram) - ego; विहाय (vihāya) - having abandoned; अहम् (aham) - I; कामक्रोधौ (kāmakrodhau) - desire and anger; च (ca) - and; सर्वदा (sarvadā) - always; सदारान् (sadārān) - with their wives; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; नित्यं (nityam) - always; प्रयत (prayata) - with effort; उपचरामि (upacarāmi) - I serve; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Ego having abandoned I desire and anger and always with their wives the Pāṇḍavas always with effort serve I.)
Always, having abandoned ego, desire, and anger, I diligently serve the Pāṇḍavas together with their wives. (03-222-18)
प्रणयं प्रतिसङ्गृह्य निधायात्मानमात्मनि। शुश्रूषुर्निरभीमाना पतीनां चित्तरक्षिणी ॥०३-२२२-१९॥
praṇayaṁ pratisaṅgṛhya nidhāyātmānam ātmani। śuśrūṣur nirabhīmānā patīnāṁ cittarakṣiṇī ॥03-222-19॥
[प्रणयं (praṇayam) - affection; प्रतिसङ्गृह्य (pratisaṅgṛhya) - completely restraining; निधाय (nidhāya) - placing; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - oneself; आत्मनि (ātmani) - in oneself; शुश्रूषुः (śuśrūṣuḥ) - serving (desirous of service); निर्अभीमाना (nirabhīmānā) - without pride; पतीनाम् (patīnām) - of husbands; चित्तरक्षिणी (cittarakṣiṇī) - protector of the mind;]
(Affection completely restraining, placing oneself in oneself, serving, without pride, of husbands, protector of the mind.)
Having completely restrained her affection and establishing herself within herself, serving as a protector of her husbands' minds without pride. (03-222-19)
दुर्व्याहृताच्छङ्कमाना दुःस्थिताद्दुरवेक्षितात्। दुरासिताद्दुर्व्रजितादिङ्गिताध्यासितादपि ॥०३-२२२-२०॥
durvyāhṛtāc chaṅkamānā duḥsthitād duravekṣitāt। durāsitād durvrajitād iṅgitādhyāsitād api ॥03-222-20॥

(Even moving about from harshly spoken (words), from uncomfortable (situation), from being looked at with hostility, from being made to sit uncomfortably, from being addressed harshly, from being subjected to gestures, even.)
She moves about even due to harsh words, uncomfortable situations, hostile looks, being made to sit uncomfortably, harsh speech, or even being subjected to angry gestures. (03-222-20)
सूर्यवैश्वानरनिभान्सोमकल्पान्महारथान्। सेवे चक्षुर्हणः पार्थानुग्रतेजःप्रतापिनः ॥०३-२२२-२१॥
sūryavaiśvānaranibhān somakalpān mahārathān। seve cakṣurhaṇaḥ pārthān ugratejaḥ-pratāpinaḥ ॥03-222-21॥
[सूर्यवैश्वानरनिभान् (sūryavaiśvānaranibhān) - having the appearance of the Sun and Vaiśvānara; सोमकल्पान् (somakalpān) - comparable to Soma (the Moon); महारथान् (mahārathān) - great chariot-warriors; सेवे (seve) - I serve; चक्षुर्हणः (cakṣurhaṇaḥ) - destroyers of (the enemies') eyes (i.e. overpowering sight); पार्थान् (pārthān) - the sons of Pritha (Arjuna and brothers); उग्रतेजःप्रतापिनः (ugratejaḥ-pratāpinaḥ) - possessing fierce energy and prowess;]
(Those great chariot-warriors, having the appearance of Sun and Vaiśvānara, comparable to Soma, I serve—the sons of Pritha, destroyers of (their enemies') eyes, possessing fierce energy and prowess.)
I serve the great chariot-warriors, the sons of Pritha, who have the radiance of the Sun and Vaiśvānara, who are comparable to Soma, who are destroyers of their enemies' sight, and who possess fierce energy and power. (03-222-21)
देवो मनुष्यो गन्धर्वो युवा चापि स्वलङ्कृतः। द्रव्यवानभिरूपो वा न मेऽन्यः पुरुषो मतः ॥०३-२२२-२२॥
devo manuṣyo gandharvo yuvā cāpi sva-laṅkṛtaḥ। dravyavān abhirūpo vā na me'nyaḥ puruṣo mataḥ॥03-222-22॥
[देवः (devaḥ) - god; spirit; मनुष्यः (manuṣyaḥ) - human; man; गन्धर्वः (gandharvaḥ) - gandharva; celestial being; युवा (yuvā) - young man; youth; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - even; also; स्वलङ्कृतः (sva-laṅkṛtaḥ) - well-adorned; splendidly decorated; द्रव्यवान् (dravyavān) - wealthy; possessing riches; अभिरूपः (abhirūpaḥ) - handsome; attractive in form; वा (vā) - or; न (na) - not; मे (me) - by me; for me; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; other; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; male; मतः (mataḥ) - considered; thought;]
(God, man, gandharva, or youth, also well-adorned, wealthy or handsome, or not by me another man considered.)
Whether he is a god, a human, a gandharva, or a youth, and even if he is splendidly adorned, wealthy, or handsome—no other man is considered by me. (03-222-22)
नाभुक्तवति नास्नाते नासंविष्टे च भर्तरि। न संविशामि नाश्नामि सदा कर्मकरेष्वपि ॥०३-२२२-२३॥
nābhuktavati nāsnāte nāsaṁviṣṭe ca bhartari। na saṁviśāmi nāśnāmi sadā karmakareṣvapi॥03-222-23॥
[नाभुक्तवति (nābhuktavati) - not having eaten; not enjoyed (by him); नास्नाते (nāsnāte) - not having bathed; not cleansed (him); नासंविष्टे (nāsaṁviṣṭe) - not having lain down (i.e., not seated/reclined); च (ca) - and; भर्तरि (bhartari) - when (my) husband; न (na) - not; संविशामि (saṁviśāmi) - I lie down; न (na) - not; अश्नामि (aśnāmi) - I eat; सदा (sadā) - always; कर्मकरेषु (karmakareṣu) - among the servants; अपि (api) - even;]
(When (my) husband has not eaten, has not bathed, has not lain down, I do not lie down, I do not eat, always, even among the servants.)
I never lie down nor eat before my husband has eaten, bathed, or reclined, not even among the servants. (03-222-23)
क्षेत्राद्वनाद्वा ग्रामाद्वा भर्तारं गृहमागतम्। प्रत्युत्थायाभिनन्दामि आसनेनोदकेन च ॥०३-२२२-२४॥
kṣetrād vanād vā grāmād vā bhartāraṃ gṛham āgatam। pratyutthāya abhinandāmi āsanena udakena ca ॥03-222-24॥
[क्षेत्रात् (kṣetrāt) - from the field; वनात् (vanāt) - from the forest; वा (vā) - or; ग्रामात् (grāmāt) - from the village; वा (vā) - or; भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - husband; गृहम् (gṛham) - to the house; आगतम् (āgatam) - arrived; प्रत्युत्थाय (pratyutthāya) - having risen to meet; अभिनन्दामि (abhinandāmi) - I greet; आसनेन (āsanena) - with a seat; उदकेन (udakena) - with water; च (ca) - and;]
(From the field, or from the forest, or from the village, when (my) husband arrives at the house, having risen to meet (him), I greet (him) with a seat and with water.)
Whether from the field, forest, or village, when my husband arrives home, I stand up to greet him and offer him a seat and water. (03-222-24)
प्रमृष्टभाण्डा मृष्टान्ना काले भोजनदायिनी। संयता गुप्तधान्या च सुसंमृष्टनिवेशना ॥०३-२२२-२५॥
pramṛṣṭabhāṇḍā mṛṣṭānnā kāle bhojanadāyinī। saṃyatā guptadhānyā ca susaṃmṛṣṭaniveśanā ॥03-222-25॥
[प्रमृष्टभाण्डा (pramṛṣṭabhāṇḍā) - with cleaned utensils; मृष्टान्ना (mṛṣṭānnā) - with purified food; काले (kāle) - at proper time; भोजनदायिनी (bhojanadāyinī) - who gives food; संयता (saṃyatā) - self-controlled; गुप्तधान्या (guptadhānyā) - one who keeps grain safe; च (ca) - and; सुसंमृष्टनिवेशना (susaṃmṛṣṭaniveśanā) - whose dwelling is well cleaned;]
(With cleaned utensils, with purified food, at proper time, giver of food; self-controlled, one who keeps grain safe, and whose dwelling is well cleaned.)
She is one who uses cleaned utensils, serves purified food at the proper time, gives food, is self-controlled, keeps the grain safe, and has a well-cleaned dwelling. (03-222-25)
अतिरस्कृतसम्भाषा दुःस्त्रियो नानुसेवती। अनुकूलवती नित्यं भवाम्यनलसा सदा ॥०३-२२२-२६॥
atiraskṛtasambhāṣā duḥstriyo nānusevatī। anukūlavatī nityaṃ bhavāmyanalasā sadā ॥03-222-26॥
[अतिरस्कृतसम्भाषा (atiraskṛta-sambhāṣā) - having speech greatly disregarded; दुःस्त्रियो (duḥ-striyaḥ) - bad women; न (na) - not; अनुसेवती (anusevatī) - associate with; अनुकूलवती (anukūlavatī) - favorable (woman); नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; भवामि (bhavāmi) - I am; अनलसा (analasā) - not indolent; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(Having speech greatly disregarded, bad women I do not associate with. Favorable always I am, not indolent always. (03-222-26))
My conversation is not with bad women whose speech is much disrespected. I am always favorable and never indolent. (03-222-26)
अनर्मे चापि हसनं द्वारि स्थानमभीक्ष्णशः। अवस्करे चिरस्थानं निष्कुटेषु च वर्जये ॥०३-२२२-२७॥
anarme cāpi hasanaṁ dvāri sthānam abhīkṣṇaśaḥ। avaskare cirasthānaṁ niṣkuṭeṣu ca varjaye ॥03-222-27॥
[अनर्मे (anarme) - in unclean places; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; हसनं (hasanam) - laughter; द्वारि (dvāri) - at the doorway; स्थानम् (sthānam) - standing; अभीक्ष्णशः (abhīkṣṇaśaḥ) - repeatedly; अवस्करे (avaskare) - in the privy; चिरस्थानं (cirasthānam) - long staying; निष्कुटेषु (niṣkuṭeṣu) - in the courtyards; च (ca) - and; वर्जये (varjaye) - should avoid;]
(In unclean places, and also laughter; at the doorway, standing repeatedly; in the privy, long staying; in the courtyards and should avoid.)
One should avoid laughing in unclean places, standing repeatedly at the doorway, lingering long in the privy, and in the courtyards. (03-222-27)
अतिहासातिरोषौ च क्रोधस्थानं च वर्जये। निरताहं सदा सत्ये भर्तॄणामुपसेवने ॥ सर्वथा भर्तृरहितं न ममेष्टं कथञ्चन ॥०३-२२२-२८॥
atihāsāt-atiroṣau ca krodhasthānaṁ ca varjaye. niratāhaṁ sadā satye bhartṝṇām-upasevane ॥ sarvathā bhartṛ-rahitaṁ na mama iṣṭaṁ kathañcana ॥03-222-28॥
[अति-हासात् (ati-hāsāt) - from excessive laughter; अति-रोषौ (ati-roṣau) - from excessive anger; च (ca) - and; क्रोध-स्थानं (krodha-sthānam) - cause of anger; च (ca) - and; वर्जये (varjaye) - I avoid; निरता (niratā) - engaged; अहम् (aham) - I; सदा (sadā) - always; सत्ये (satye) - in truth; भर्तॄणाम् (bhartṝṇām) - of husbands; उपसेवने (upasevane) - in service; सर्वथा (sarvathā) - in every way; भर्तृ-रहितं (bhartṛ-rahitam) - without husband; न (na) - not; मम (mama) - to me; इष्टं (iṣṭam) - desired; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - at all;]
(From excessive laughter, from excessive anger, and from the cause of anger I avoid. I am always engaged in truth, in the service of husbands. In every way, without husband, not to me desired at all (03-222-28).)
I avoid excessive laughter, excessive anger, and any cause of anger. I am always devoted to truth and to the service of my husbands. In every respect, life without a husband is never at all desirable to me (03-222-28).
यदा प्रवसते भर्ता कुटुम्बार्थेन केनचित्। सुमनोवर्णकापेता भवामि व्रतचारिणी ॥०३-२२२-२९॥
yadā pravasate bhartā kuṭumbārthena kenacit। sumanovarṇakāpetā bhavāmi vratacāriṇī ॥03-222-29॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; प्रवसते (pravasate) - departs; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; कुटुम्बार्थेन (kuṭumbārthena) - for family’s sake; केनचित् (kenacit) - by someone (for some reason); सुमनोवर्णकापेता (sumanovarṇakāpetā) - devoid of the colors of flowers (discolored); भवामि (bhavāmi) - I become; व्रतचारिणी (vratacāriṇī) - one observing a vow;]
(When the husband departs for the sake of the family by someone (for some reason), I become devoid of the colors of flowers, one observing a vow.)
Whenever my husband goes away for some family reason, I become pale like a flower stripped of its color, strictly observing a vow. (03-222-29)
यच्च भर्ता न पिबति यच्च भर्ता न खादति। यच्च नाश्नाति मे भर्ता सर्वं तद्वर्जयाम्यहम् ॥०३-२२२-३०॥
yac ca bhartā na pibati yac ca bhartā na khādati। yac ca nāśnāti me bhartā sarvaṃ tad varjayāmy aham ॥03-222-30॥
[यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; न (na) - not; पिबति (pibati) - drinks; यत् (yat) - which; च (ca) - and; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; न (na) - not; खादति (khādati) - eats; यत् (yat) - which; न (na) - not; अश्नाति (aśnāti) - consumes; मे (me) - my; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; तत् (tat) - that; वर्जयामि (varjayāmi) - I avoid; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Which and the husband does not drink, which and the husband does not eat, which does not consume my husband—all that I avoid, I.)
Whatever my husband does not drink, whatever my husband does not eat, whatever my husband does not consume, I avoid all that. (03-222-30)
यथोपदेशं नियता वर्तमाना वराङ्गने। स्वलङ्कृता सुप्रयता भर्तुः प्रियहिते रता ॥०३-२२२-३१॥
yathopadeśaṃ niyatā vartamānā varāṅgane। swalaṅkṛtā suprayatā bhartuḥ priyahite ratā ॥03-222-31॥
[यथोपदेशम् (yathopadeśam) - according to instruction; नियता (niyatā) - restrained; वर्तमाना (vartamānā) - conducting oneself; वराङ्गने (varāṅgane) - O beautiful-limbed one; स्वलङ्कृता (swalaṅkṛtā) - well-adorned; सुप्रयता (suprayatā) - exerting herself well; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of the husband; प्रियहिते (priyahite) - in what is dear and beneficial; रता (ratā) - engaged;]
("According to instruction, restrained, conducting oneself, O beautiful-limbed one; well-adorned, exerting herself well, of the husband, in what is dear and beneficial, engaged." (03-222-31))
"O beautiful-limbed one, conducting herself according to instruction, restrained, well-adorned, making her best effort, engaged in what is dear and beneficial to her husband." (03-222-31)
ये च धर्माः कुटुम्बेषु श्वश्र्वा मे कथिताः पुरा। भिक्षाबलिश्राद्धमिति स्थालीपाकाश्च पर्वसु ॥ मान्यानां मानसत्कारा ये चान्ये विदिता मया ॥०३-२२२-३२॥
ye ca dharmāḥ kuṭumbeṣu śvaśrva me kathitāḥ purā। bhikṣā-bali-śrāddham iti sthālīpākāś ca parvasu॥ mānyānāṃ mānasatkārā ye ca anye viditā mayā॥03-222-32॥
[ये (ye) - which; (plural, masculine nominative); च (ca) - and; धर्माः (dharmāḥ) - duties; कुटुम्बेषु (kuṭumbeṣu) - in families; श्वश्र्वा (śvaśrva) - by mother-in-law; मे (me) - to me; कथिताः (kathitāḥ) - told; पुरा (purā) - formerly; भिक्षाबलिश्राद्धमिति (bhikṣā-bali-śrāddham iti) - ‘alms, offering, śrāddha’ thus; स्थालीपाकाः (sthālīpākāḥ) - cooked food offerings; च (ca) - and; पर्वसु (parvasu) - on festivals; मान्यानां (mānyānāṃ) - of honored (persons); मानसत्कारा (mānasatkārā) - mental respect; ये (ye) - which; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - other; विदिता (viditā) - known; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Which and duties in families by mother-in-law to me told formerly. ‘alms, offering, śrāddha’ thus cooked food offerings and on festivals. Of honored persons mental respect, which and other known by me.)
And those duties in families which were formerly told to me by my mother-in-law, such as alms, offering, śrāddha rites, as well as cooked food offerings on festival days, the mental respect for honored people, and such others as are known to me. (03-222-32)
तान्सर्वाननुवर्तामि दिवारात्रमतन्द्रिता। विनयान्नियमांश्चापि सदा सर्वात्मना श्रिता ॥०३-२२२-३३॥
tānsarvānanuvartāmi divārātram atandritā। vinayān niyamāṃś cāpi sadā sarvātmanā śritā॥03-222-33॥
[तान् (tān) (tān) - them; सर्वान् (sarvān) (sarvān) - all; अनुवर्तामि (anuvartāmi) (anuvartāmi) - I follow; दिवा (divā) (divā) - by day; रात्रम् (rātram) (rātram) - by night; अतन्द्रिता (atandritā) (atandritā) - without weariness; विनयान् (vinayān) (vinayān) - regulations; नियमान् (niyamān) (niyamān) - disciplines; च (ca) (ca) - and; अपि (api) (api) - also; सदा (sadā) (sadā) - always; सर्वात्मना (sarvātmanā) (sarvātmanā) - with my whole being; श्रिता (śritā) (śritā) - I have resorted;]
(Them all I follow, by day and by night, without weariness; regulations and disciplines also always with my whole being I have resorted.)
I follow all of them at all times, day and night, tirelessly; and I always adhere to all the regulations and disciplines with my whole being. (03-222-33)
मृदून्सतः सत्यशीलान्सत्यधर्मानुपालिनः। आशीविषानिव क्रुद्धान्पतीन्परिचराम्यहम् ॥०३-२२२-३४॥
mṛdūn sataḥ satyaśīlān satyadharmānupālinaḥ। āśīviṣān iva kruddhān patīn paricarāmy aham ॥03-222-34॥
[मृदून् (mṛdūn) - gentle; सतः (sataḥ) - good; सत्यशीलान् (satyaśīlān) - truthful in nature; सत्यधर्मान् (satyadharmān) - truly righteous; अनुपालिनः (anupālinaḥ) - observing; आशीविषान् (āśīviṣān) - venomous snakes; इव (iva) - like; क्रुद्धान् (kruddhān) - angry; पतीन् (patīn) - lords; परिचरामि (paricarāmi) - I attend; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Gentle good truthful-natured truly-righteous observing like venomous snakes angry lords I attend I.)
I serve gentle, virtuous, truthful, truly righteous lords, observing them, even when they are angry, like (one attends to) venomous snakes. (03-222-34)
पत्याश्रयो हि मे धर्मो मतः स्त्रीणां सनातनः। स देवः सा गतिर्नान्या तस्य का विप्रियं चरेत् ॥०३-२२२-३५॥
patyāśrayo hi me dharmo mataḥ strīṇāṃ sanātanaḥ। sa devaḥ sā gatirnānyā tasya kā vipriyaṃ caret ॥03-222-35॥
[पत्याश्रयः (patyāśrayaḥ) - dependence on husband; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - by me; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; मतः (mataḥ) - is considered; स्त्रीणाम् (strīṇām) - of women; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal; सः (saḥ) - he; देवः (devaḥ) - lord; सा (sā) - she; गतिः (gatiḥ) - refuge; न (na) - not; अन्या (anyā) - other; तस्य (tasya) - to him; का (kā) - what; विप्रियम् (vipriyam) - displeasing; चरेत् (caret) - would she do;]
(Dependence on husband indeed by me duty is considered of women eternal. He (the husband) is lord, she refuge; not other (refuge). To him what displeasing would she do?)
Dependence on the husband is indeed regarded by me as the eternal duty of women. He is her lord, she has no other refuge; what displeasing thing could she do to him? (03-222-35)
अहं पतीन्नातिशये नात्यश्ने नातिभूषये। नापि परिवदे श्वश्रूं सर्वदा परियन्त्रिता ॥०३-२२२-३६॥
ahaṃ patīn nātiśaye nātyaśne nātibhūṣaye। nāpi parivade śvaśrūṃ sarvadā pari-yantritā ॥03-222-36॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; पतीन् (patīn) - husbands; न (na) - not; अतिशये (atiśaye) - exceedingly honor; न (na) - not; अत्यश्ने (ātyaśne) - overeat; न (na) - not; अतिभूषये (atibhūṣaye) - excessively adorn (myself); न (na) - not; अपि (api) - also; परिवदे (parivade) - speak ill of; श्वश्रूं (śvaśrūm) - mother-in-law; सर्वदा (sarvadā) - always; परियन्त्रिता (pariyantritā) - restrained;]
(I husbands not exceedingly honor, not overeat, not excessively adorn (myself), not also speak ill of mother-in-law, always restrained.)
I do not excessively honor my husbands, nor overeat, nor excessively adorn myself; nor do I ever speak ill of my mother-in-law. I am always restrained. (03-222-36)
अवधानेन सुभगे नित्योत्थानतयैव च। भर्तारो वशगा मह्यं गुरुशुश्रूषणेन च ॥०३-२२२-३७॥
avadhānena subhage nityotthānatayaiva ca। bhartāro vaśagā mahyaṃ guruśuśrūṣaṇena ca॥03-222-37॥
[अवधानेन (avadhānena) - by attentiveness; सुभगे (subhage) - O auspicious one; नित्योत्थानतया (nityotthānatayā) - by constant rising (diligence); एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; भर्तारः (bhartāraḥ) - husbands; वशगाः (vaśagāḥ) - under control; मम (mama) - to me; गुरुशुश्रूषणेन (guruśuśrūṣaṇena) - by service to elders (gurus); च (ca) - and;]
(By attentiveness, O auspicious one, by constant rising indeed and, husbands are under my control, by service to elders and.)
O auspicious one, by attentiveness, constant diligence, and service to elders, husbands become obedient to me. (03-222-37)
नित्यमार्यामहं कुन्तीं वीरसूं सत्यवादिनीम्। स्वयं परिचराम्येका स्नानाच्छादनभोजनैः ॥०३-२२२-३८॥
nityam āryām ahaṃ kuntīṃ vīrasūṃ satyavādinīm। svayam paricarāmy ekā snānācchādanabhojanaiḥ ॥03-222-38॥
[नित्यम् (nityam) - always; आर्याम् (āryām) - the noble woman; अहम् (aham) - I; कुन्तीं (kuntīṃ) - Kuntī; वीरसूम् (vīrasūm) - the mother of heroes; सत्यवादिनीम् (satyavādinīm) - the truthful (one); स्वयम् (svayam) - personally; परिचरामि (paricarāmi) - I serve; एका (ekā) - alone; स्नान (snāna) - in bathing; आच्छादन (ācchādana) - in covering (clothing); भोजनैः (bhojanaiḥ) - with food (meals);]
(Always (I) the noble woman Kuntī, mother of heroes, the truthful one, I personally serve alone in bathing, clothing, and meals.)

नैतामतिशये जातु वस्त्रभूषणभोजनैः। नापि परिवदे चाहं तां पृथां पृथिवीसमाम् ॥०३-२२२-३९॥
naitāmatishaye jātu vastrabhūṣaṇabhojanaiḥ। nāpi parivade cāhaṃ tāṃ pṛthāṃ pṛthivīsamām॥03-222-39॥
[न (na) - not; एताम् (etām) - this (her); अतिशये (atishaye) - to excess; at any time; जातु (jātu) - ever; वस्त्र (vastra) - clothes; भूषण (bhūṣaṇa) - ornaments; भोजनैः (bhojanaiḥ) - with foods; नापि (nāpi) - nor indeed; not also; परिवदे (parivade) - do I censure; च (ca) - and; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; ताम् (tām) - her; पृथाम् (pṛthām) - wide; great; पृथिवीसमाम् (pṛthivīsamām) - equal to the earth;]
(Not ever do I greatly (accuse) this (her) with clothes, ornaments, or foods; nor indeed do I censure her who is wide, equal to the earth.)
I never excessively reproach her for matters of clothes, ornaments, or food; nor indeed do I censure her, who is as broad and noble as the earth. (03-222-39)
अष्टावग्रे ब्राह्मणानां सहस्राणि स्म नित्यदा। भुञ्जते रुक्मपात्रीषु युधिष्ठिरनिवेशने ॥०३-२२२-४०॥
aṣṭāvagre brāhmaṇānāṃ sahasrāṇi sma nityadā। bhuñjate rukmapātrīṣu yudhiṣṭhiraniveśane ॥03-222-40॥

महार्हमाल्याभरणाः सुवर्णाश्चन्दनोक्षिताः। मणीन्हेम च बिभ्रत्यो नृत्यगीतविशारदाः ॥०३-२२२-४५॥
mahārhamālyābharaṇāḥ suvarṇāś candanokṣitāḥ। maṇīn hema ca bibhratyo nṛtyagītaviśāradāḥ॥03-222-45॥

शतमश्वसहस्राणि दश नागायुतानि च। युधिष्ठिरस्यानुयात्रमिन्द्रप्रस्थनिवासिनः ॥०३-२२२-४८॥
śatam aśva-sahasrāṇi daśa nāga-ayutāni ca। yudhiṣṭhirasya anuyātram indraprastha-nivāsinaḥ॥03-222-48॥

etad āsīt tadā rājño yan mahīṃ paryapālayat। yeṣāṃ saṅkhyā-vidhiṃ caiva pradiśāmi śṛṇomi ca॥03-222-49॥

अन्तःपुराणां सर्वेषां भृत्यानां चैव सर्वशः। आ गोपालाविपालेभ्यः सर्वं वेद कृताकृतम् ॥०३-२२२-५०॥
antaḥ-purāṇāṃ sarveṣāṃ bhṛtyānāṃ ca eva sarvaśaḥ। ā gopāla-avi-pālebhyaḥ sarvaṃ veda kṛta-akṛtam॥03-222-50॥
[अन्तःपुराणां (antaḥ-purāṇām) - of all the inner chambers; सर्वेषां (sarveṣām) - of all; भृत्यानां (bhṛtyānām) - of the servants; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - altogether; आ (ā) - up to; गोपालाविपालेभ्यः (gopāla-avi-pālebhyaḥ) - from the cowherds to the keepers of sheep and goats; सर्वं (sarvam) - everything; वेद (veda) - knows; कृताकृतम् (kṛta-akṛtam) - done and not done;]
(Of all the inner chambers, of all servants indeed, altogether, from the cowherds up to the keepers of sheep and goats, everything (he) knows, what is done and not done.)

सर्वं राज्ञः समुदयमायं च व्ययमेव च। एकाहं वेद्मि कल्याणि पाण्डवानां यशस्विनाम् ॥०३-२२२-५१॥

(All the king's total wealth, income and expenditure indeed and I alone know, O auspicious one, of the Pāṇḍavas the illustrious.)
O auspicious one, I alone know all the wealth, income, and expenditure of the illustrious Pāṇḍavas. (03-222-51)
मयि सर्वं समासज्य कुटुम्बं भरतर्षभाः। उपासनरताः सर्वे घटन्ते स्म शुभानने ॥०३-२२२-५२॥
mayi sarvaṃ samāsajya kuṭumbaṃ bharatarṣabhāḥ। upāsanaratāḥ sarve ghaṭante sma śubhānane॥03-222-52॥

O best of the Bharatas, having entrusted the whole family to me, all were engaged in worship and used to assemble, O beautiful-faced one. (03-222-52)
तमहं भारमासक्तमनाधृष्यं दुरात्मभिः। सुखं सर्वं परित्यज्य रात्र्यहानि घटामि वै ॥०३-२२२-५३॥
tam ahaṃ bhāram āsaktam anādhṛṣyaṃ dur-ātmabhiḥ। sukham sarvaṃ parityajya rātry-ahāni ghaṭāmi vai॥03-222-53॥
[तम् (tam) - that; अहम् (aham) - I; भारम् (bhāram) - burden; आसक्तम् (āsaktam) - bound; attached; अनाधृष्यम् (anādhṛṣyam) - unassailable; दुरात्मभिः (dur-ātmabhiḥ) - by wicked beings; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; परित्यज्य (parityajya) - having abandoned; रात्र्यहानि (rātry-ahāni) - nights and days; घटामि (ghaṭāmi) - I strive; I apply myself; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(That burden attached, unassailable by wicked beings, I, having abandoned all happiness, strive days and nights indeed.)
I indeed devote myself day and night to that burden, which is attached (to me) and unassailable by wicked beings, having given up all happiness. (03-222-53)
अधृष्यं वरुणस्येव निधिपूर्णमिवोदधिम्। एकाहं वेद्मि कोशं वै पतीनां धर्मचारिणाम् ॥०३-२२२-५४॥
adhṛṣyaṃ varuṇasyeva nidhipūrṇam ivodadhim। ekāhaṃ vedmi kośaṃ vai patīnāṃ dharmacāriṇām॥03-222-54॥
[अधृष्यं (adhṛṣyaṃ) - unassailable; not to be harmed; वरुणस्येव (varuṇasya iva) - like Varuṇa’s; निधिपूर्णम् (nidhipūrṇam) - filled with treasures; इव (iva) - like; उदधिम् (udadhiṃ) - ocean; एका अहं (ekā ahaṃ) - I alone; वेद्मि (vedmi) - know; कोशं (kośaṃ) - treasure; वै (vai) - indeed; पतीनां (patīnāṃ) - of husbands; धर्मचारिणाम् (dharmacāriṇām) - of those who conduct themselves in righteousness;]
(Unassailable, like Varuṇa’s, filled with treasures, like the ocean; I alone know indeed the treasure of husbands of those who conduct themselves in righteousness.)
I alone know the unassailable treasure of husbands, filled with riches like Varuṇa’s ocean, who act in righteousness. (03-222-54)
अनिशायां निशायां च सहायाः क्षुत्पिपासयोः। आराधयन्त्याः कौरव्यांस्तुल्या रात्रिरहश्च मे ॥०३-२२२-५५॥
aniśāyāṃ niśāyāṃ ca sahāyāḥ kṣutpipāsayoḥ। ārādhayantyāḥ kauravyāṃstulyā rātrirahaśca me ॥03-222-55॥
[अनिशायाम् (aniśāyām) - in day; (literally: in non-night; aniśā, a-+niśā); निशायाम् (niśāyām) - in night; च (ca) - and; सहायाः (sahāyāḥ) - companions; helpers; क्षुत्पिपासयोः (kṣutpipāsayoḥ) - of hunger and thirst; आराधयन्त्याः (ārādhayantyāḥ) - serving; pleasing; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O son of Kuru; (vocative case, address); अस्तुल्या (astulyā) - not different; equal; रात्रिः (rātriḥ) - night; अहः (ahaḥ) - day; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - to me;]
(In day, in night and, companions of hunger and thirst, serving, O son of Kuru, not different night, day and to me.)
O son of Kuru, to me, night and day are equal while serving as companions of hunger and thirst, both by day and night. (03-222-55)
प्रथमं प्रतिबुध्यामि चरमं संविशामि च। नित्यकालमहं सत्ये एतत्संवननं मम ॥०३-२२२-५६॥
prathamaṃ pratibudhyāmi caramaṃ saṃviśāmi ca। nityakālamahaṃ satye etatsaṃvananaṃ mama॥03-222-56॥
[प्रथमं (prathamaṃ) - at first; first; प्रतिबुध्यामि (pratibudhyāmi) - I awaken; I wake up; चरमं (caramaṃ) - last; at the end; संविशामि (saṃviśāmi) - I lie down; I go to sleep; च (ca) - and; नित्यकालम् (nityakālam) - at all times; always; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; सत्ये (satye) - in truth; in the real; in truthfulness; एतत् (etat) - this; संवननं (saṃvananaṃ) - abiding; adherence; observance; मम (mama) - of mine; my;]
(At first I awaken, at the last I lie down and; at all times I, in truth, this observance (is) mine.)
I wake up first, and at the last I go to sleep; always, in truth, this observance is mine. (03-222-56)
एतज्जानाम्यहं कर्तुं भर्तृसंवननं महत्। असत्स्त्रीणां समाचारं नाहं कुर्यां न कामये ॥०३-२२२-५७॥
etaj jānāmy ahaṃ kartuṃ bhartṛ-saṃvananaṃ mahat। asat-strīṇāṃ samācāraṃ nāhaṃ kuryāṃ na kāmaye॥03-222-57॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; अहम् (aham) - I; कर्तुं (kartuṃ) - to do; भर्तृसंवननं (bhartṛ-saṃvananam) - honoring (saṃvananam) the husband (bhartṛ); महत् (mahat) - great; असत्स्त्रीणां (asat-strīṇām) - of unchaste women; समाचारं (samācāram) - conduct; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; कुर्यां (kuryām) - would do; न (na) - not; कामये (kāmaye) - I desire;]
(This I know—I, to do great honoring of the husband; the conduct of unchaste women I would not do, I do not desire.)
I know this: I wish to perform the great duty of honoring my husband. I do not wish, nor do I desire, to adopt the conduct of unchaste women. (03-222-57)
तच्छ्रुत्वा धर्मसहितं व्याहृतं कृष्णया तदा। उवाच सत्या सत्कृत्य पाञ्चालीं धर्मचारिणीम् ॥०३-२२२-५८॥
tacchrutvā dharmasahitaṃ vyāhṛtaṃ kṛṣṇayā tadā. uvāca satyā satkṛtya pāñcālīṃ dharmacāriṇīm ॥03-222-58॥

(That having heard, accompanied by dharma, spoken by Kṛṣṇā then, Satyā, having honored, spoke to Pāñcālī, follower of dharma.)
Then Satyā, having honored Pāñcālī, who follows dharma, spoke (thus) upon hearing the speech in accord with dharma spoken by Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī). (03-222-58)
अभिपन्नास्मि पाञ्चालि याज्ञसेनि क्षमस्व मे। कामकारः सखीनां हि सोपहासं प्रभाषितुम् ॥०३-२२२-५९॥
abhipannāsmi pāñcāli yājñaseni kṣamasva me। kāmakāraḥ sakhīnāṃ hi sopahāsaṃ prabhāṣitum ॥03-222-59॥
[अभिपन्नास्मि (abhipannāsmi) - I am distressed; पाञ्चालि (pāñcāli) - O Pāñcālī; याज्ञसेनि (yājñaseni) - Yājñaseni (daughter of Yajñasena); क्षमस्व (kṣamasva) - forgive; मे (me) - me; कामकारः (kāmakāraḥ) - by inclination; सखीनाम् (sakhīnām) - of friends; हि (hi) - indeed; सोपहासम् (sopahāsam) - with derision; प्रभाषितुम् (prabhāṣitum) - to speak;]
(I am distressed, O Pāñcālī, Yājñaseni, forgive me. By inclination, indeed, of friends, to speak with derision.)
