इमं तु ते मार्गमपेतदोषं; वक्ष्यामि चित्तग्रहणाय भर्तुः। यस्मिन्यथावत्सखि वर्तमाना; भर्तारमाच्छेत्स्यसि कामिनीभ्यः ॥०३-२२३-१॥
imaṁ tu te mārgam apeta-doṣaṁ; vakṣyāmi citta-grahaṇāya bhartuḥ. yasmin yathāvat sakhi vartamānā; bhartāram ācchhetsyasi kāminībhyah॥03-223-1॥
[इमं (imaṁ) - this (accusative singular masculine); तु (tu) - but; however; ते (te) - to you; for you; मार्गम् (mārgam) - path; way; अपेतदोषं (apeta-doṣam) - free from fault; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I will declare; I will tell; चित्तग्रहणाय (citta-grahaṇāya) - for seizing the mind; for attaining the mind; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of the husband; of the lord; यस्मिन (yasmin) - in which; wherein; यथावत् (yathāvat) - properly; in the right way; सखि (sakhi) - O friend; वर्तमाना (vartamānā) - abiding; conducting oneself; भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - the husband; the lord; आच्छेत्स्यसि (ācchhetsyasi) - you will obtain; you will gain; कामिनीभ्यः (kāminībhyah) - from other women; from desiring women;]
(But this path, free from fault, I will declare to you for the seizing of the mind of the husband; in which, properly abiding, O friend, you will obtain your husband from other women.)
But I will tell you this faultless path for winning your husband's mind; following it properly, O friend, you will secure your husband away from other women. (03-223-1)
नैतादृशं दैवतमस्ति सत्ये; सर्वेषु लोकेषु सदैवतेषु। यथा पतिस्तस्य हि सर्वकामा; लभ्याः प्रसादे कुपितश्च हन्यात् ॥०३-२२३-२॥
naitādṛśaṃ daivatam asti satye; sarveṣu lokeṣu sadaivateṣu. yathā patiḥ tasya hi sarvakāmāḥ labhyāḥ prasāde kupitaś ca hanyāt. ॥03-223-2॥
[न (na) - not; एतादृशं (etādṛśam) - such as this; दैवतम् (daivatam) - divinity; अस्ति (asti) - there is; सत्ये (satye) - in truth; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - in all; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - worlds; सदैवतेषु (sadaivateṣu) - among all divinities; यथा (yathā) - as; पतिः (patiḥ) - the husband; तस्य (tasya) - to her; हि (hi) - indeed; सर्वकामा (sarvakāmāḥ) - all desires; लभ्याः (labhyāḥ) - are obtainable; प्रसादे (prasāde) - on favor; कुपितः (kupitaḥ) - when enraged; च (ca) - and; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - may destroy;]
(Not such a divinity exists in truth; in all worlds among all divinities. As the husband to her indeed, all desires are obtainable on favor; and when enraged, may destroy. (03-223-2))
There is, in reality, no divinity among all the worlds and all the gods such as the husband to a woman; for by his favor all desires are obtainable, and if enraged, he can destroy. (03-223-2)
तस्मादपत्यं विविधाश्च भोगाः; शय्यासनान्यद्भुतदर्शनानि। वस्त्राणि माल्यानि तथैव गन्धाः; स्वर्गश्च लोको विषमा च कीर्तिः ॥०३-२२३-३॥
tasmād apatyaṃ vividhāś ca bhogāḥ; śayyāsanāny adbhuta-darśanāni. vastrāṇi mālyāni tathaiva gandhāḥ; svargaś ca loko viṣamā ca kīrtiḥ ॥03-223-3॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - from that; अपत्यम् (apatyam) - offspring; विविधाः (vividhāḥ) - various; च (ca) - and; भोगाः (bhogāḥ) - enjoyments; शय्यासनानि (śayyāsanāni) - beds and seats; अद्भुतदर्शनानि (adbhuta-darśanāni) - wondrous to behold; वस्त्राणि (vastrāṇi) - garments; माल्यानि (mālyāni) - garlands; तथैव (tathaiva) - just so; गन्धाः (gandhāḥ) - fragrances; स्वर्गः (svargaḥ) - heaven; च (ca) - and; लोकः (lokaḥ) - world; विषमा (viṣamā) - uneven; च (ca) - and; कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame;]
(From that, offspring, and various enjoyments; beds and seats wondrous to behold. Garments, garlands, just so fragrances; heaven, and world, uneven, and fame. (03-223-3))
From that arise offspring and various enjoyments; marvelous beds and seats, garments and garlands, fragrances likewise; heaven and the world, unevenness, and fame. (03-223-3)
सुखं सुखेनेह न जातु लभ्यं; दुःखेन साध्वी लभते सुखानि। सा कृष्णमाराधय सौहृदेन; प्रेम्णा च नित्यं प्रतिकर्मणा च ॥०३-२२३-४॥
sukhaṁ sukheneha na jātu labhyaṁ; duḥkhena sādhvī labhate sukhāni. sā kṛṣṇam ārādhaya sauhṛdena; premṇā ca nityaṁ pratikarmaṇā ca ॥03-223-4॥
[सुखं (sukham) - happiness; सुखेन (sukhena) - by happiness; इह (iha) - here; न (na) - not; जातु (jātu) - ever; लभ्यं (labhyaṁ) - is to be obtained; दुःखेन (duḥkhena) - by suffering; साध्वी (sādhvī) - a virtuous woman; लभते (labhate) - obtains; सुखानि (sukhāni) - happinesses; सा (sā) - she; कृष्णम् (kṛṣṇam) - Kṛṣṇa; आराधय (ārādhaya) - worship; सौहृदेन (sauhṛdena) - with friendship; प्रेम्णा (premṇā) - with love; च (ca) - and; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; प्रतिकर्मणा (pratikarmaṇā) - by (every) act; च (ca) - and;]
(Happiness is not ever to be obtained here by happiness; by suffering a virtuous woman obtains happinesses. She (should) worship Kṛṣṇa with friendship, and with love always and by (every) act.)
Happiness can never be gained here by pursuing only pleasure; a virtuous woman attains happiness through (enduring) suffering. Let her worship Kṛṣṇa with friendship and love, in all her actions and at all times. (03-223-4)
तथाशनैश्चारुभिरग्र्यमाल्यै; र्दाक्षिण्ययोगैर्विविधैश्च गन्धैः। अस्याः प्रियोऽस्मीति यथा विदित्वा; त्वामेव संश्लिष्यति सर्वभावैः ॥०३-२२३-५॥
tathā śanaiś cārubhir agrya-mālyaiḥ dākṣiṇya-yogaiḥ vividhaiś ca gandhaiḥ| asyāḥ priyo'smīti yathā viditvā tvām eva sanśliṣyati sarva-bhāvaiḥ ॥03-223-5॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; शनैः (śanaiḥ) - slowly; चारुभिः (cārubhiḥ) - with beautiful; अग्र्यमाल्यैः (agrya-mālyaiḥ) - with excellent garlands; दाक्षिण्ययोगैः (dākṣiṇya-yogaiḥ) - with acts of kindness; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - with various; च (ca) - and; गन्धैः (gandhaiḥ) - with fragrances; अस्याः (asyāḥ) - of her; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - beloved; अस्मि (asmi) - (I) am; इति (iti) - thus; यथा (yathā) - as; विदित्वा (viditvā) - having known; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; एव (eva) - only; संशलिष्यति (sanśliṣyati) - will embrace; सर्वभावैः (sarva-bhāvaiḥ) - with all sentiments;]
(Thus slowly, with beautiful excellent garlands, with acts of kindness, and with various fragrances, having known "I am her beloved" as such, she will embrace you only with all sentiments.)
Therefore, she, recognizing that "I am her beloved," will slowly, with beautiful and excellent garlands, with acts of kindness, and with various fragrances, embrace you alone wholeheartedly. (03-223-5)
श्रुत्वा स्वरं द्वारगतस्य भर्तुः; प्रत्युत्थिता तिष्ठ गृहस्य मध्ये। दृष्ट्वा प्रविष्टं त्वरितासनेन; पाद्येन चैव प्रतिपूजय त्वम् ॥०३-२२३-६॥
śrutvā svaraṃ dvāragatasya bhartuḥ; pratyutthitā tiṣṭha gṛhasya madhye. dṛṣṭvā praviṣṭaṃ tvaritāsanena; pādyena caiva pratipūjaya tvam ॥03-223-6॥
[श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; स्वरं (svaraṃ) - sound; द्वारगतस्य (dvāragatasya) - of the one arrived at the door; भर्तुः (bhartuḥ) - of the master; प्रत्युत्थिता (pratyutthitā) - having risen (to meet); तिष्ठ (tiṣṭha) - stand; गृहस्य (gṛhasya) - of the house; मध्ये (madhye) - in the middle; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; प्रविष्टं (praviṣṭaṃ) - the one entered; त्वरितासनेन (tvaritāsanena) - with a quickly arranged seat; पाद्येन (pādyena) - with water for washing feet; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रतिपूजय (pratipūjaya) - honor (him); त्वम् (tvam) - you;]
(Having heard the sound of the master who has arrived at the door, having risen, stand in the middle of the house. Having seen the one entered, with a quickly arranged seat, and with water for washing feet indeed, you honor (him).)
Hearing the voice of the master who has arrived at the door, rise and stand in the middle of the house. Upon seeing him enter, honor him with a swiftly prepared seat and water for his feet. (03-223-6)
सम्प्रेषितायामथ चैव दास्या; मुत्थाय सर्वं स्वयमेव कुर्याः। जानातु कृष्णस्तव भावमेतं; सर्वात्मना मां भजतीति सत्ये ॥०३-२२३-७॥
saṃpreṣitāyām atha caiva dāsyā; utthāya sarvaṃ svayameva kuryāḥ. jānātu kṛṣṇas tava bhāvam etaṃ; sarvātmanā māṃ bhajatīti satye ॥03-223-7॥
[सम्प्रेषितायाम् (saṃpreṣitāyām) - when having been sent; (loc. sg. fem. of saṃpreṣitā — sent, dispatched; suffix indicates state or condition); अथ (atha) - then; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; दास्या (dāsyā) - by the maidservant; (instr. sg. fem. of dāsī — maid, female servant); उत्थाय (utthāya) - having risen; having gotten up; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; everything; स्वयम् (svayam) - oneself; by oneself; एव (eva) - indeed; कुर्याः (kuryāḥ) - you should do; (2nd person sg., optative of √kṛ — to do); जानातु (jānātu) - let him know; (3rd person sg., imperative of √jñā — to know); कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; (proper noun); तव (tava) - your; भावम् (bhāvam) - feeling; intention; state of mind; एतं (etaṃ) - this; सर्वात्मना (sarvātmanā) - with one's whole self; with all one's soul; माम् (mām) - me; भजति (bhajati) - serves; worships; (3rd person sg. pres. of √bhaj — to serve, to worship); इति (iti) - thus; so; सत्ये (satye) - in truth; verily; (loc. sg. of satya — truth, reality);]
(When, indeed, the maidservant has been sent, then, having arisen, you should do everything yourself. Let Kṛṣṇa know this feeling of yours — that "with one's whole self, one worships me" — in truth.)
When the maidservant has been sent away, then you should rise and do everything by yourself. Let Kṛṣṇa truly know this feeling of yours: that you serve me with all your heart. (03-223-7)
त्वत्संनिधौ यत्कथयेत्पतिस्ते; यद्यप्यगुह्यं परिरक्षितव्यम्। काचित्सपत्नी तव वासुदेवं; प्रत्यादिशेत्तेन भवेद्विरागः ॥०३-२२३-८॥
tvatsaṁnidhau yat kathayet patis te; yady apy aguhyaṁ parirakṣitavyam. kācit sapatnī tava vāsudevaṁ; pratyādiśet tena bhaved virāgaḥ ॥03-223-8॥
[त्वत्संनिधौ (tvatsaṁnidhau) - in your presence; यत् (yat) - which; कथयेत् (kathayet) - might say; पतिः (patiḥ) - husband; ते (te) - your; यद्यपि (yady api) - even if; अगुह्यम् (aguhyam) - not a secret; परिरक्षितव्यम् (parirakṣitavyam) - should be protected; काचित् (kācit) - some; सपत्नी (sapatnī) - co-wife; तव (tava) - your; वासुदेवं (vāsudevam) - Vāsudeva (Krishna); प्रत्यादिशेत् (pratyādiśet) - might tell; तेन (tena) - by that; भवेत् (bhavet) - may arise; विरागः (virāgaḥ) - disaffection;]
(In your presence, whatever your husband might say, even if not a secret, should be protected. Some co-wife might tell Vāsudeva about you; by that, disaffection may arise.)

प्रियांश्च रक्तांश्च हितांश्च भर्तु; स्तान्भोजयेथा विविधैरुपायैः। द्वेष्यैरपक्षैरहितैश्च तस्य; भिद्यस्व नित्यं कुहकोद्धतैश्च ॥०३-२२३-९॥
priyāṁś ca raktāṁś ca hitāṁś ca bhartu; tān bhojayethā vividhair upāyaiḥ. dveṣyair apakṣair ahitaiś ca tasya; bhidyasva nityaṁ kuhakoddhataiś ca ॥03-223-9॥
[प्रियांश्च (priyāṁś ca) - those dear ones and; रक्तांश्च (raktāṁś ca) - those attached ones and; हितांश्च (hitāṁś ca) - those well-wishers and; भर्तु (bhartu) - of the master; स्तान् (tān) - them; भोजयेथा (bhojayethā) - you should feed; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - by various; उपायैः (upāyaiḥ) - means; द्वेष्यैः (dveṣyaiḥ) - by those hated; अपक्षैः (apakṣaiḥ) - by adversaries; अहितैः (ahitaiḥ) - by those unfriendly; च (ca) - and; तस्य (tasya) - his; भिद्यस्व (bhidyasva) - cause division; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; कुहक (kuhaka) - deceivers; उद्धतैः (uddhataiḥ) - by the arrogant; च (ca) - and;]
(Those dear, those attached, and those well-wishers of the master, them you should feed by various means. By those hated, by adversaries, by those unfriendly and by his deceivers and the arrogant, always cause division.)
Feed the master's dear ones, attached ones, and well-wishers by various means. Among his enemies, adversaries, and unfriendly people, as well as his deceivers and the arrogant, you must always create division. (03-223-9)
मदं प्रमादं पुरुषेषु हित्वा; संयच्छ भावं प्रतिगृह्य मौनम्। प्रद्युम्नसाम्बावपि ते कुमारौ; नोपासितव्यौ रहिते कदाचित् ॥०३-२२३-१०॥
madaṃ pramādaṃ puruṣeṣu hitvā; saṃyaccha bhāvaṃ pratigṛhya maunam. pradyumnasāmbāv api te kumārau; nopāsitavyau rahite kadācit ॥03-223-10॥
[मदं (madaṃ) (madaṃ) - pride; intoxication; प्रमादं (pramādaṃ) (pramādaṃ) - negligence; carelessness; पुरुषेषु (puruṣeṣu) (puruṣeṣu) - among men; हित्वा (hitvā) (hitvā) - having abandoned; leaving aside; संयच्छ (saṃyaccha) (saṃyaccha) - restrain; control; भावं (bhāvaṃ) (bhāvaṃ) - emotion; disposition; प्रतिगृह्य (pratigṛhya) (pratigṛhya) - having accepted; taking; मौनम् (maunam) (maunam) - silence; प्रद्युम्नसाम्बावपि (pradyumnasāmbāv api) (pradyumnasāmbāv api) - even (api) Pradyumna and Sāmba; ते (te) (te) - your; कुमारौ (kumārau) (kumārau) - sons; boys; न (na) (na) - not; उपासितव्यौ (upāsitavyau) (upāsitavyau) - should be associated with; should be visited; रहिते (rahite) (rahite) - in private; alone; कदाचित् (kadācit) (kadācit) - at any time; ever;]
(Abandoning pride and negligence among men; restrain emotion, having accepted silence. Even your sons, Pradyumna and Sāmba, should not be associated with in private at any time.)
Abandon pride and carelessness among people; control your disposition, having embraced silence. Even your sons Pradyumna and Sāmba should never be met with privately at any time. (03-223-10)
महाकुलीनाभिरपापिकाभिः; स्त्रीभिः सतीभिस्तव सख्यमस्तु। चण्डाश्च शौण्डाश्च महाशनाश्च; चौराश्च दुष्टाश्चपलाश्च वर्ज्याः ॥०३-२२३-११॥
mahākulīnābhirapāpikābhiḥ; strībhiḥ satībhistava sakhyamastu. caṇḍāśca śauṇḍāśca mahāśanāśca; caurāśca duṣṭāścapalāśca varjyāḥ ॥03-223-11॥
[महाकुलीनाभिः (mahākulīnābhiḥ) - by women of great families; अपापिकाभिः (apāpikābhiḥ) - by women not sinful; स्त्रीभिः (strībhiḥ) - by women; सतीभिः (satībhiḥ) - by virtuous women; तव (tava) - your; सख्यम् (sakhyam) - friendship; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; चण्डाः (caṇḍāḥ) - violent ones; च (ca) - and; शौण्डाः (śauṇḍāḥ) - drunkards; च (ca) - and; महाशनाः (mahāśanāḥ) - gluttons; च (ca) - and; चौराः (caurāḥ) - thieves; च (ca) - and; दुष्टाः (duṣṭāḥ) - wicked ones; चपलाः (capalāḥ) - restless ones; च (ca) - and; वर्ज्याः (varjyāḥ) - should be avoided;]
(By women of great families, by women not sinful, by women, by virtuous women, your friendship let it be. Violent ones and drunkards and gluttons and thieves and wicked and restless and should be avoided.)
Let your friendship be with women from noble families, women who are not sinful, women, and virtuous women. The violent, the drunkards, the gluttons, the thieves, the wicked, and the restless should be avoided. (03-223-11)
एतद्यशस्यं भगवेदनं च; स्वर्ग्यं तथा शत्रुनिबर्हणं च। महार्हमाल्याभरणाङ्गरागा; भर्तारमाराधय पुण्यगन्धा ॥०३-२२३-१२॥
etat-yaśasyaṁ bhagavē danaṁ ca; svargyaṁ tathā śatru-nibarhaṇaṁ ca. mahārha-mālya-ābharaṇa-aṅgarāgā; bhartāram ārādhaya puṇya-gandhā ॥03-223-12॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; यशस्यं (yaśasyam) - glorious; भगवेत् (bhagavēt) - O fortunate one; अनं (anam) - gift; च (ca) - and; स्वर्ग्यं (svargyam) - leading to heaven; तथा (tathā) - thus; also; शत्रुनिबर्हणं (śatru-nibarhaṇam) - destruction of enemies; च (ca) - and; महार्हमाल्याभरणाङ्गरागा (mahārha-mālya-ābharaṇa-aṅgarāgā) - having very precious garlands, ornaments, and unguents; भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - husband; आराधय (ārādhaya) - worship; पुण्यगन्धा (puṇya-gandhā) - O one with auspicious fragrance;]
(This glorious, O fortunate one, gift and; heaven-leading, also enemy-destroying and. Having very precious garlands, ornaments, and unguents; worship your husband, O one with auspicious fragrance (03-223-12))
O auspiciously fragrant one, adorned with very precious garlands, ornaments, and unguents, worship your husband; for this act is glorious, leads to heaven, and brings the destruction of enemies, O fortunate one (03-223-12)
