dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ tataḥ sarve dadṛśur janamejaya। pṛṣṭvā sukham atho rājñaḥ pṛṣṭvā rājñā ca bhārata ॥03-228-1॥
[धृतराष्ट्रं (dhṛtarāṣṭram) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; (proper noun; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - saw; जनमेजय (janamejaya) - O Janamejaya; पृष्ट्वा (pṛṣṭvā) - having asked; सुखम् (sukham) - well-being; अथः (atho) - then; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; पृष्ट्वा (pṛṣṭvā) - having asked; राज्ञा (rājñā) - by the king; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Dhṛtarāṣṭra then all saw, O Janamejaya; having asked well-being then of the king, having asked by the king also, O Bhārata.)
O Janamejaya, then all saw Dhṛtarāṣṭra. After inquiring about the well-being of the king, and when the king also asked in return, O Bhārata. (03-228-1)
ततस्तैर्विहितः पूर्वं समङ्गो नाम बल्लवः। समीपस्थास्तदा गावो धृतराष्ट्रे न्यवेदयत् ॥०३-२२८-२॥
tatastairvihitaḥ pūrvaṃ samaṅgo nāma ballavaḥ। samīpasthāstadā gāvo dhṛtarāṣṭre nyavedayat॥03-228-2॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; विहितः (vihitaḥ) - appointed; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; समङ्गः (samaṅgaḥ) - Samaṅga (proper name); नाम (nāma) - by name; बल्लवः (ballavaḥ) - cowherd; समीपस्थाः (samīpasthāḥ) - those nearby; तदा (tadā) - then; गावः (gāvaḥ) - the cows; धृतराष्ट्रे (dhṛtarāṣṭre) - to Dhṛtarāṣṭra; न्यवेदयत् (nyavedayat) - reported;]
(Then, by them, was appointed before a cowherd named Samaṅga; those nearby then reported the cows to Dhṛtarāṣṭra.)
Then formerly, a cowherd named Samaṅga was appointed by them; at that time, those nearby reported the cows to Dhṛtarāṣṭra. (03-228-2)
अनन्तरं च राधेयः शकुनिश्च विशां पते। आहतुः पार्थिवश्रेष्ठं धृतराष्ट्रं जनाधिपम् ॥०३-२२८-३॥
anantaraṃ ca rādheyaḥ śakuniś ca viśāṃ pate। āhatuḥ pārthivaśreṣṭhaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ janādhipam ॥03-228-3॥

(Afterwards and Rādheya and Śakuni, O lord of men, struck the excellent among kings, Dhritarashtra, the lord of men.)
Afterwards, Rādheya (Karna) and Shakuni, O lord of men, struck Dhritarashtra, the best of kings and the lord of men. (03-228-3)
रमणीयेषु देशेषु घोषाः सम्प्रति कौरव। स्मारणासमयः प्राप्तो वत्सानामपि चाङ्कनम् ॥०३-२२८-४॥
ramaṇīyeṣu deśeṣu ghoṣāḥ samprati kaurava. smaraṇāsamayaḥ prāpto vatsānām api cāṅkanam ॥03-228-4॥
[रमणीयेषु (ramaṇīyeṣu) - in the delightful; (plural, locative); देशेषु (deśeṣu) - regions; (plural, locative); घोषाः (ghoṣāḥ) - villages; (plural, nominative); सम्प्रति (samprati) - now; कौरव (kaurava) - O Kaurava; (vocative); स्मारणासमयः (smaraṇāsamayaḥ) - time for recalling; (nominative singular); प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - has arrived; वत्सानाम् (vatsānām) - of the calves; (genitive plural); अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; अङ्कनम् (aṅkanam) - marking (with number, sign, or brand); (nominative singular/neuter);]
(In the delightful regions, villages now, O Kaurava, the time for recalling has arrived, of the calves also and the marking.)
O Kaurava, in the delightful regions, the villages are now at the time for recalling and even marking of the calves has arrived. (03-228-4)
मृगया चोचिता राजन्नस्मिन्काले सुतस्य ते। दुर्योधनस्य गमनं त्वमनुज्ञातुमर्हसि ॥०३-२२८-५॥
mṛgayā cocitā rājan asmin kāle sutasya te। duryodhanasya gamanaṃ tvam anujñātum arhasi॥03-228-5॥
[मृगया (mṛgayā) - the hunt; च (ca) - and; उचिता (ucitā) - appropriate; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; काले (kāle) - time; सुतस्य (sutasya) - of son; ते (te) - your; दुर्योधनस्य (duryodhanasya) - of Duryodhana; गमनम् (gamanaṃ) - going; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अनुज्ञातुम् (anujñātum) - to permit; अर्हसि (arhasi) - ought;]
(The hunt and is appropriate, O king, in this time; of your son Duryodhana the going you to permit ought.)
O king, the hunt is suitable at this time; you ought to permit your son Duryodhana to go. (03-228-5)
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥

mṛgayā śobhanā tāta gavāṃ ca samavekṣaṇam। viśrambhastu na gantavyo ballavānāmiti smare ॥03-228-6॥
[मृगया (mṛgayā) - hunting; शोभना (śobhanā) - is pleasing; तात (tāta) - O dear (son); गवां (gavāṃ) - of cows; च (ca) - and; समवेक्षणम् (samavekṣaṇam) - watching over; विश्रम्भः (viśrambhaḥ) - trust; तु (tu) - but; न (na) - not; गन्तव्यः (gantavyaḥ) - to go to; बल्लवानाम् (ballavānām) - of herdsmen; इति (iti) - thus; स्मरे (smare) - remember;]
(Hunting is pleasing, O dear, and watching over cows; but trust is not to be placed in herdsmen—remember thus.)
Hunting is enjoyable, dear son, and watching the cows too; but do not place trust in the herdsmen—remember this. (03-228-6)
ते तु तत्र नरव्याघ्राः समीप इति नः श्रुतम्। अतो नाभ्यनुजानामि गमनं तत्र वः स्वयम् ॥०३-२२८-७॥
te tu tatra naravyāghrāḥ samīpa iti naḥ śrutam। ato nābhyanujānāmi gamanaṃ tatra vaḥ svayam ॥03-228-7॥
[ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - but; तत्र (tatra) - there; नरव्याघ्राः (naravyāghrāḥ) - tiger-like men; समीप (samīpa) - (are) near; इति (iti) - thus; नः (naḥ) - (by) us; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - (has been) heard; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; न (na) - not; अभ्यनुजानामि (abhyanujānāmi) - I permit; गमनम् (gamanaṃ) - going; तत्र (tatra) - there; वः (vaḥ) - your; स्वयम् (svayam) - personally;]
(They but there tiger-like men near thus by us heard; therefore not I permit going there your personally.)
But we have heard that those tiger-like men are nearby there; therefore, I do not permit you to go there yourselves. (03-228-7)
छद्मना निर्जितास्ते हि कर्शिताश्च महावने। तपोनित्याश्च राधेय समर्थाश्च महारथाः ॥०३-२२८-८॥
chadmanā nirjitās te hi karśitāś ca mahāvane। taponityāś ca rādheya samarthāś ca mahārathāḥ॥03-228-8॥
[छद्मना (chadmanā) - by deceit; निर्जिताः (nirjitāḥ) - conquered; ते (te) - they; हि (hi) - indeed; कर्शिताः (karśitāḥ) - weakened; च (ca) - and; महावने (mahāvane) - in the great forest; तपोनित्याः (taponityāḥ) - ever devoted to austerities; च (ca) - and; राधेय (rādheya) - O son of Radha; समर्थाः (samarthāḥ) - capable; च (ca) - and; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - mighty chariot-warriors;]
(By deceit conquered they indeed, and weakened and in the great forest, ever devoted to austerities, O son of Radha, capable and mighty chariot-warriors.)
O Radheya, they who have been conquered by deceit and have become weakened in the great forest, are ever devoted to austerities, and are capable and mighty chariot-warriors. (03-228-8)
धर्मराजो न सङ्क्रुध्येद्भीमसेनस्त्वमर्षणः। यज्ञसेनस्य दुहिता तेज एव तु केवलम् ॥०३-२२८-९॥
dharmarājo na saṅkrudhyedbhīmasenastvam-arṣaṇaḥ। yajñasenasya duhitā teja eva tu kevalam ॥03-228-9॥
[धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - King of dharma; (Yudhiṣṭhira); न (na) - not; सङ्क्रुध्येत् (saṅkrudhyet) - should become angry; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अर्षणः (amarṣaṇaḥ) - not intolerant; (patient, forbearing); यज्ञसेनस्य (yajñasenasya) - of Yajñasena; दुहिता (duhitā) - daughter; तेजः (tejaḥ) - splendor; energy; एव (eva) - indeed; only; तु (tu) - but; केवलम् (kevalam) - only; exclusively;]
(Dharmarāja should not become angry; Bhīmasena, you are tolerant; the daughter of Yajñasena is surely but only splendor.)
Dharmarāja should not become angry; Bhīmasena, you are patient; the daughter of Yajñasena is indeed pure brilliance. (03-228-9)
यूयं चाप्यपराध्येयुर्दर्पमोहसमन्विताः। ततो विनिर्दहेयुस्ते तपसा हि समन्विताः ॥०३-२२८-१०॥
yūyaṃ cāpy aparādhyeyur darpa-moha-samanvitāḥ। tato vinirdaheyus te tapasā hi samanvitāḥ॥03-228-10॥
[यूयम् (yūyam) - you (plural); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अपराध्येयुः (aparādhyeyuḥ) - might transgress; दर्प (darpa) - pride; मोह (moha) - delusion; समन्विताः (samanvitāḥ) - endowed with; ततः (tataḥ) - then; विनिर्दहेयुः (vinirdah-eyuḥ) - might utterly burn; ते (te) - they; तपसा (tapasā) - with austerity; हि (hi) - indeed; समन्विताः (samanvitāḥ) - endowed with;]
(You also might transgress, endowed with pride and delusion; then those endowed with austerity indeed might utterly burn (you).)
You too, filled with pride and delusion, might transgress; then they, endowed with austerity, would certainly consume you. (03-228-10)
अथ वा सायुधा वीरा मन्युनाभिपरिप्लुताः। सहिता बद्धनिस्त्रिंशा दहेयुः शस्त्रतेजसा ॥०३-२२८-११॥
atha vā sāyudhā vīrā manyunā-abhipariplutāḥ। sahitā baddha-nistriṃśā daheyuḥ śastra-tejasā॥03-228-11॥
[अथ (atha) - then; वा (vā) - or; सायुधाः (sāyudhāḥ) - armed; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; मन्युना (manyunā) - with wrath; अभिपरिप्लुताः (abhipariplutāḥ) - completely filled; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; बद्धनिस्त्रिंशाः (baddha-nistriṃśāḥ) - with fastened swords; दहेयुः (daheyuḥ) - they might burn; शस्त्रतेजसा (śastra-tejasā) - by the energy of (their) weapons;]
(Then or (else), armed heroes, completely filled with wrath, together, with fastened swords, might burn by the energy of (their) weapons.)
Or else, then, armed heroes—filled with wrath, together, with fastened swords—might burn (the enemy) by the energy of their weapons. (03-228-11)
अथ यूयं बहुत्वात्तानारभध्वं कथञ्चन। अनार्यं परमं तत्स्यादशक्यं तच्च मे मतम् ॥०३-२२८-१२॥
atha yūyaṃ bahutvāt tān ārabhadhvaṃ kathaṃcana। anāryaṃ paramaṃ tat syād aśakyaṃ tac ca me matam ॥03-228-12॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; यूयम् (yūyam) - you (plural); बहुत्वात् (bahutvāt) - due to plurality; because of being many; तान् (tān) - them; आरभध्वम् (ārabhadhvam) - undertake; attack; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way; somehow; अनार्यम् (anāryam) - unworthy; ignoble; परमम् (paramam) - supreme; utmost; तत् (tat) - that; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; might be; अशक्यम् (aśakyam) - impossible; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; मतम् (matam) - opinion;]
(Now you, because of being many, undertake them somehow. The utmost ignobility, that would be, impossible, and that is my opinion.)
Therefore, as you are many, attack them in any manner you can. That would be extremely ignoble and impossible, and that is my opinion. (3-228-12)
उषितो हि महाबाहुरिन्द्रलोके धनञ्जयः। दिव्यान्यस्त्राण्यवाप्याथ ततः प्रत्यागतो वनम् ॥०३-२२८-१३॥
uṣito hi mahābāhur indraloke dhanañjayaḥ। divyāny astrāṇy avāpya atha tataḥ pratyāgato vanam ॥03-228-13॥
[उषितः (uṣitaḥ) - having dwelt; हि (hi) - indeed; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - mighty-armed; इन्द्रलोके (indraloke) - in the world of Indra; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhananjaya (Arjuna); दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; अवाप्य (avāpya) - having obtained; अथ (atha) - then; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; प्रत्यागतः (pratyāgataḥ) - returned; वनम् (vanam) - to the forest;]
(Having dwelt indeed, the mighty-armed Dhananjaya (Arjuna) in the world of Indra, divine weapons having obtained, then from there returned to the forest.)
Indeed, the mighty-armed Dhananjaya (Arjuna), having lived in the world of Indra and obtained the divine weapons, then returned from there to the forest. (03-228-13)
अकृतास्त्रेण पृथिवी जिता बीभत्सुना पुरा। किं पुनः स कृतास्त्रोऽद्य न हन्याद्वो महारथः ॥०३-२२८-१४॥
akṛtāstreṇa pṛthivī jitā bībhatsunā purā। kiṁ punaḥ sa kṛtāstro'dya na hanyād vo mahārathaḥ ॥03-228-14॥
[अकृतास्त्रेण (akṛtāstreṇa) - by one not having perfected weapons; पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - the earth; जिता (jitā) - conquered; बीभत्सुना (bībhatsunā) - by Bībhatsu; पुरा (purā) - formerly; किं (kiṁ) - why; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; स (sa) - he; कृतास्त्रः (kṛtāstraḥ) - one accomplished in weapons; अद्य (adya) - today; न (na) - not; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - would slay; वः (vaḥ) - you (all); महारथः (mahārathaḥ) - the great warrior;]
(By one not having perfected weapons, the earth was conquered by Bībhatsu formerly. Why again would not he, accomplished in weapons, today slay you, the great warrior? (03-228-14))
Bībhatsu once conquered the earth without even perfecting arms—why would that great hero, now perfected in the use of weapons, not slay you today? (03-228-14)
अथ वा मद्वचः श्रुत्वा तत्र यत्ता भविष्यथ। उद्विग्नवासो विश्रम्भाद्दुःखं तत्र भविष्यति ॥०३-२२८-१५॥
atha vā mad-vacaḥ śrutvā tatra yattā bhaviṣyatha। udvignavāsaḥ viśrambhāt duḥkhaṃ tatra bhaviṣyati॥03-228-15॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; so; वा (vā) - or; मद्वचः (mad-vacaḥ) - my words; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; तत्र (tatra) - there; यत्ता (yattā) - prepared; intent; भविष्यथ (bhaviṣyatha) - you will become; उद्विग्नवासो (udvigna-vāsaḥ) - one whose state is agitated; dwelling in anxiety; विश्रम्भात् (viśrambhāt) - from confidence; due to lack of trust; दुःखं (duḥkham) - distress; pain; suffering; तत्र (tatra) - there; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will arise; will be;]
(Now or, having heard my words, there intent you will become. One whose state is agitated, from confidence, distress there will arise. (03-228-15))
Or, now, having listened to my words, you will be prepared there. But if your mind is agitated due to lack of confidence, suffering will arise there. (03-228-15)
अथ वा सैनिकाः केचिदपकुर्युर्युधिष्ठिरे। तदबुद्धिकृतं कर्म दोषमुत्पादयेच्च वः ॥०३-२२८-१६॥
atha vā sainikāḥ kecid apakurv yur yudhiṣṭhire। tad buddhikṛtaṃ karma doṣam utpādayec ca vaḥ॥03-228-16॥
[अथ (atha) - then; वा (vā) - or; सैनिकाः (sainikāḥ) - soldiers; केचित् (kecit) - some; अपकुर्युḥ (apakuryuḥ) - might do wrongly; युधिष्ठिरे (yudhiṣṭhire) - in Yudhiṣṭhira; तत् (tat) - that; बुद्धिकृतं (buddhikṛtam) - caused by judgment; कर्म (karma) - action; दोषम् (doṣam) - fault; उत्पादयेत् (utpādayet) - might produce; च (ca) - and; वः (vaḥ) - for you;]
(Then or soldiers some might do wrongly in Yudhiṣṭhira. That action caused by judgment might also produce fault for you.)
Or else, some soldiers might act wrongly concerning Yudhiṣṭhira; such an action, resulting from judgment, could bring fault upon you. (03-228-16)
तस्माद्गच्छन्तु पुरुषाः स्मारणायाप्तकारिणः। न स्वयं तत्र गमनं रोचये तव भारत ॥०३-२२८-१७॥
tasmād gacchantu puruṣāḥ smāraṇāyāptakāriṇaḥ. na svayaṃ tatra gamanaṃ rocaye tava bhārata ॥03-228-17॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; गच्छन्तु (gacchantu) - let them go; पुरुषाः (puruṣāḥ) - men; स्मारणाय (smāraṇāya) - for remembrance; आप्तकारिणः (āptakāriṇaḥ) - those who have accomplished their aim; न (na) - not; स्वयम् (svayam) - oneself; तत्र (tatra) - there; गमनम् (gamanaṃ) - going; रोचये (rocaye) - I approve; तव (tava) - your; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Therefore let men who have accomplished their aim go for remembrance. I do not approve your going there yourself, O Bhārata.)
Therefore, O Bhārata, let men who have already achieved their aim go there for remembrance; I do not approve of your going there yourself. (03-228-17)

धर्मज्ञः पाण्डवो ज्येष्ठः प्रतिज्ञातं च संसदि। तेन द्वादश वर्षाणि वस्तव्यानीति भारत ॥०३-२२८-१८॥
dharmajñaḥ pāṇḍavo jyeṣṭhaḥ pratijñātaṃ ca saṃsadi। tena dvādaśa varṣāṇi vastavyānīti bhārata ॥03-228-18॥
[धर्मज्ञः (dharmajñaḥ) - knower of dharma; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - Pāṇḍava (Yudhiṣṭhira); ज्येष्ठः (jyeṣṭhaḥ) - eldest; प्रतिज्ञातं (pratijñātam) - promised; च (ca) - and; संसदि (saṃsadi) - in the assembly; तेन (tena) - by him; द्वादश (dvādaśa) - twelve; वर्षाणि (varṣāṇi) - years; वस्तव्याणी (vastavyāṇi) - to be dwelt (in exile); इति (iti) - so; thus; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(The knower of dharma, the Pāṇḍava, eldest, promised also in the assembly: by him, twelve years are to be dwelt (in exile), thus, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, the eldest Pāṇḍava, knower of dharma, promised in the assembly that he would live in exile for twelve years. (03-228-18)
अनुवृत्ताश्च ते सर्वे पाण्डवा धर्मचारिणः। युधिष्ठिरश्च कौन्तेयो न नः कोपं करिष्यति ॥०३-२२८-१९॥
anuvṛttāś ca te sarve pāṇḍavā dharmacāriṇaḥ। yudhiṣṭhiraś ca kaunteyo na naḥ kopaṃ kariṣyati॥03-228-19॥
[अनुवृत्ताः (anuvṛttāḥ) - obedient; adhered; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; धर्मचारिणः (dharmacāriṇaḥ) - practicers of righteousness; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhiṣṭhira; च (ca) - and; कौन्तेयः (kaunteyaḥ) - son of Kuntī; न (na) - not; नः (naḥ) - to us; कोपं (kopaṃ) - anger; करिष्यति (kariṣyati) - will do;]
(Obedient and they all the Pāṇḍavas, practicers of righteousness. Yudhiṣṭhira and (the) son of Kuntī will not to us anger do. (03-228-19))
All the Pāṇḍavas are obedient and engaged in righteousness. Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī, will not become angry with us. (03-228-19)
मृगयां चैव नो गन्तुमिच्छा संवर्धते भृशम्। स्मारणं च चिकीर्षामो न तु पाण्डवदर्शनम् ॥०३-२२८-२०॥
mṛgayāṃ caiva no gantum icchā saṃvardhate bhṛśam। smāraṇaṃ ca cikīrṣāmo na tu pāṇḍava-darśanam॥03-228-20॥
[मृगयाम् (mṛgayām) - hunting (accusative); च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; नः (naḥ) - our; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; इच्छा (icchā) - desire; संवर्धते (saṃvardhate) - grows; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - greatly; स्मारणम् (smāraṇam) - remembrance; च (ca) - and; चिकीर्षामः (cikīrṣāmaḥ) - we wish to do; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; पाण्डवदर्शनम् (pāṇḍava-darśanam) - seeing the Pāṇḍavas;]
(Our desire to go hunting indeed grows greatly, and we wish to recall (them), but not to see the Pāṇḍavas.)
Our desire to go hunting has greatly increased, and we wish to remember them, but not to see the Pāṇḍavas. (03-228-20)
न चानार्यसमाचारः कश्चित्तत्र भविष्यति। न च तत्र गमिष्यामो यत्र तेषां प्रतिश्रयः ॥०३-२२८-२१॥
na cānāryasamācāraḥ kaścit tatra bhaviṣyati। na ca tatra gamiṣyāmo yatra teṣāṃ pratiśrayaḥ ॥03-228-21॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अनार्यसमाचारः (anāryasamācāraḥ) - unworthy conduct; of the ignoble; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; तत्र (tatra) - there; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तत्र (tatra) - there; गमिष्यामः (gamiṣyāmaḥ) - we will go; यत्र (yatra) - where; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; प्रतिश्रयः (pratiśrayaḥ) - refuge;]
(Not and unworthy conduct anyone there will be. Not and there we will go where of them refuge.)
And there will not be any unworthy conduct there. Nor will we go where their refuge is. (03-228-21)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

evam-uktaḥ śakuninā dhṛtarāṣṭro janeśvaraḥ। duryodhanaṃ sahāmātyam anujajñe na kāmataḥ॥03-228-22॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; शकुनिना (śakuninā) - by Śakuni; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhṛtarāṣṭra; जनेश्वरः (janeśvaraḥ) - king of people; दुर्योधनं (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; सह (saha) - along with; अमात्यं (amātyam) - ministers; अनुजज्ञे (anujajñe) - consented; न (na) - not; कामतः (kāmataḥ) - from desire;]
(Thus having been addressed by Śakuni, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, king of people, consented to Duryodhana along with ministers, not from desire.)
Thus addressed by Śakuni, Dhṛtarāṣṭra, the king, gave his consent to Duryodhana and his ministers, but not out of his own desire. (03-228-22)
अनुज्ञातस्तु गान्धारिः कर्णेन सहितस्तदा। निर्ययौ भरतश्रेष्ठो बलेन महता वृतः ॥०३-२२८-२३॥
anujñātastu gāndhāriḥ karṇena sahitastadā। niryayau bharataśreṣṭho balena mahatā vṛtaḥ॥03-228-23॥
[अनुज्ञातः (anujñātaḥ) - having been permitted; तु (tu) - but; गान्धारिः (gāndhāriḥ) - Gandhari (the prince/king of Gandhara); कर्णेन (karṇena) - by Karṇa; सहितः (sahitaḥ) - accompanied; तदा (tadā) - then; निर्ययौ (niryayau) - departed; भरतश्रेष्ठः (bharataśreṣṭhaḥ) - the best among the Bharatas; बलेन (balena) - with an army; महता (mahatā) - great; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - surrounded;]
(Having been permitted, but Gandhari, accompanied by Karna, then departed, the best among the Bharatas, surrounded by a great army.)
But Gandhari, having been permitted, accompanied by Karna, then departed—the best of the Bharatas, surrounded by a great army. (03-228-23)
दुःशासनेन च तथा सौबलेन च देविना। संवृतो भ्रातृभिश्चान्यैः स्त्रीभिश्चापि सहस्रशः ॥०३-२२८-२४॥
duḥśāsanena ca tathā saubalena ca devinā। saṁvṛto bhrātṛbhiś ca anyaiḥ strībhiś ca api sahasraśaḥ ॥03-228-24॥
[दुःशासनेन (duḥśāsanena) - by Duḥśāsana; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - likewise; सौबलेन (saubalena) - by the son of Subala (i.e., Śakuni); च (ca) - and; देविना (devinā) - by the queen; संवृतः (saṁvṛtaḥ) - surrounded; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - by brothers; च (ca) - and; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by others; स्त्रीभिः (strībhiḥ) - by women; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by the thousands;]
(By Duḥśāsana and likewise by the son of Subala and by the queen, surrounded by brothers and others and by women also by the thousands.)
He was surrounded by Duḥśāsana, the son of Subala, the queen, brothers, others, and also by thousands of women. (03-228-24)
तं निर्यान्तं महाबाहुं द्रष्टुं द्वैतवनं सरः। पौराश्चानुययुः सर्वे सहदारा वनं च तत् ॥०३-२२८-२५॥
taṃ niryāntaṃ mahābāhuṃ draṣṭuṃ dvaitavanaṃ saraḥ| paurāś cānuyayuḥ sarve sahadārā vanaṃ ca tat॥03-228-25॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; निर्यान्तं (niryāntaṃ) - departing; महाबाहुं (mahābāhuṃ) - mighty-armed; द्रष्टुं (draṣṭum) - to see; द्वैतवनं (dvaitavanaṃ) - Dvaita forest; सरः (saraḥ) - lake; पौराः (paurāḥ) - citizens; च (ca) - and; अनुययुः (anuyayuḥ) - followed; सर्वे (sarve) - all; सहदारा (sahadārā) - with their wives; वनं (vanaṃ) - forest; च (ca) - and; तत् (tat) - that;]
(Him departing, mighty-armed, to see Dvaita forest and the lake, the citizens all, with their wives, followed, and (to) that forest.)
All the citizens, with their wives, followed the mighty-armed hero as he departed to see the Dvaita forest and the lake, and to that forest. (03-228-25)
अष्टौ रथसहस्राणि त्रीणि नागायुतानि च। पत्तयो बहुसाहस्रा हयाश्च नवतिः शताः ॥०३-२२८-२६॥
aṣṭau rathasahasrāṇi trīṇi nāgāyutāni ca। pattayo bahusāhasrā hayāś ca navatiḥ śatāḥ॥03-228-26॥
[अष्टौ (aṣṭau) - eight; रथसहस्राणि (rathasahasrāṇi) - chariot-thousands; thousands of chariots; त्रीणि (trīṇi) - three; नागायुतानि (nāgāyutāni) - elephant-tens of thousands; ten thousands of elephants; च (ca) - and; पत्तयः (pattayaḥ) - foot-soldiers; बहुसाहस्राः (bahusāhasrāḥ) - many-thousands; (who are) many thousands; हयाः (hayāḥ) - horses; च (ca) - and; नवति (navati) - ninety; शताः (śatāḥ) - hundreds;]
(Eight thousands of chariots, three tens of thousands of elephants and, foot-soldiers (who are) many thousands, and horses, ninety hundreds.)
There were eight thousand chariots, thirty thousand elephants, countless thousands of foot-soldiers, and nine thousand horses. (03-228-26)
शकटापणवेश्याश्च वणिजो बन्दिनस्तथा। नराश्च मृगयाशीलाः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥०३-२२८-२७॥
śakaṭāpaṇaveśyāś ca vaṇijo bandinas tathā। narāś ca mṛgayāśīlāḥ śataśo 'tha sahasraśaḥ॥03-228-27॥
[शकटापणवेश्याः (śakaṭāpaṇaveśyāḥ) - cart-drivers, shopkeepers, prostitutes; (plural nominative); च (ca) - and; वणिजः (vaṇijaḥ) - merchants; (plural nominative); बन्दिनः (bandinaḥ) - bards; (plural nominative); तथा (tathā) - also; in like manner; नराः (narāḥ) - men; (plural nominative); च (ca) - and; मृगयाशीलाः (mṛgayāśīlāḥ) - those engaged in hunting; hunters; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - by hundreds; अथ (atha) - and; then; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands;]
(Cart-drivers, shopkeepers, prostitutes and merchants, bards also, and men, hunters by hundreds and then by thousands.)

ततः प्रयाणे नृपतेः सुमहानभवत्स्वनः। प्रावृषीव महावायोरुद्धतस्य विशां पते ॥०३-२२८-२८॥
tataḥ prayāṇe nṛpateḥ sumahān abhavat svanaḥ। prāvṛṣīva mahāvāyoḥ uddhatasya viśāṃ pate ॥03-228-28॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रयाणे (prayāṇe) - in the departure; नृपतेः (nṛpateḥ) - of the king; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; अभवत् (abhavat) - arose; स्वनः (svanaḥ) - sound; प्रावृषि (prāvṛṣi) - in the rainy season; इव (iva) - as if; महावायोः (mahāvāyoḥ) - of a great wind; उद्धतस्य (uddhatasya) - of the agitated; विशां (viśām) - of the people (men); पते (pate) - O lord;]
(Then in the departure of the king, a very great sound arose, as if in the rainy season of a great wind, of the agitated, O lord of men.)
Then, as the king set out, a very great sound arose—like that of a mighty wind in the rainy season stirred up, O lord of men. (03-228-28)
गव्यूतिमात्रे न्यवसद्राजा दुर्योधनस्तदा। प्रयातो वाहनैः सर्वैस्ततो द्वैतवनं सरः ॥०३-२२८-२९॥
gavyūtimātre nyavasadraājā duryodhanastadā। prayāto vāhanaiḥ sarvaistatodvaitavanaṃ saraḥ ॥03-228-29॥
[गव्यूति-मात्रे (gavyūti-mātre) - at the distance of a gavyūti (about two miles); न्यवसत् (nyavasat) - stayed; राजा (rājā) - the king; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; तदा (tadā) - then; प्रयातः (prayātaḥ) - departed; वाहनैः (vāhanaiḥ) - with vehicles; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - with all; ततः (tataḥ) - from there; द्वैतवनं (dvaitavanam) - to the Dvaita forest; सरः (saraḥ) - lake;]
(At the distance of a gavyūti, the king Duryodhana then stayed; having departed from there with all vehicles, (he went) to the lake of Dvaita forest.)
King Duryodhana then stayed at a distance of a gavyūti; from there, he departed with all the vehicles to the lake in the Dvaita forest. (03-228-29)
