(Then Duryodhana king, here and there in the forest dwelling, went to the herdsmen's settlements all around; there he made a dwelling.)

रमणीये समाज्ञाते सोदके समहीरुहे। देशे सर्वगुणोपेते चक्रुरावसथं नराः ॥०३-२२९-२॥
ramaṇīye samājñāte sodake samahīruhe। deśe sarvaguṇopete cakrurāvasathaṃ narāḥ॥03-229-2॥

तथैव तत्समीपस्थान्पृथगावसथान्बहून्। कर्णस्य शकुनेश्चैव भ्रातॄणां चैव सर्वशः ॥०३-२२९-३॥
tathaiva tatsamīpasthān pṛthagāvasathān bahūn। karṇasya śakuneś caiva bhrātṝṇāṃ caiva sarvaśaḥ ॥03-229-3॥

ददर्श स तदा गावः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः। अङ्कैर्लक्षैश्च ताः सर्वा लक्षयामास पार्थिवः ॥०३-२२९-४॥
dadarśa sa tadā gāvaḥ śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ. aṅkairlakṣaiśca tāḥ sarvā lakṣayāmāsa pārthivaḥ ॥03-229-4॥

अथ स स्मारणं कृत्वा लक्षयित्वा त्रिहायनान्। वृतो गोपालकैः प्रीतो व्यहरत्कुरुनन्दनः ॥०३-२२९-६॥

स च पौरजनः सर्वः सैनिकाश्च सहस्रशः। यथोपजोषं चिक्रीडुर्वने तस्मिन्यथामराः ॥०३-२२९-७॥
sa ca paurajanaḥ sarvaḥ sainikāś ca sahasraśaḥ। yathopajoṣaṃ cikrīḍur vane tasmin yathāmarāḥ॥03-229-7॥

tato gopāḥ pragātāraḥ kuśalā nṛttavādite. dhārtarāṣṭram upātiṣṭhan kanyāś caiva swalaṅkṛtāḥ ॥03-229-8॥

ततस्ते सहिताः सर्वे तरक्षून्महिषान्मृगान्। गवयर्क्षवराहांश्च समन्तात्पर्यकालयन् ॥०३-२२९-१०॥
tatas te sahitāḥ sarve tarakṣūn mahiṣān mṛgān। gavaya-ṛkṣa-varāhāṁś ca samantāt paryakalayan ॥03-229-10॥

(He, piercing those elephants thoroughly with arrows, binding (them) in the great forest, indeed caused the deer to be seized in the beautiful places.)

गोरसानुपयुञ्जान उपभोगांश्च भारत। पश्यन्सुरमणीयानि पुष्पितानि वनानि च ॥०३-२२९-१२॥
gorasānupayuñjāna upabhogāṃś ca bhārata. paśyansuramaṇīyāni puṣpitāni vanāni ca ॥03-229-12॥

मत्तभ्रमरजुष्टानि बर्हिणाभिरुतानि च। अगच्छदानुपूर्व्येण पुण्यं द्वैतवनं सरः ॥ ऋद्ध्या परमया युक्तो महेन्द्र इव वज्रभृत् ॥०३-२२९-१३॥
mattabhramarajuṣṭāni barhiṇābhirutāni ca। agacchadānupūrvyeṇa puṇyaṃ dvaitavanaṃ saraḥ॥ ṛddhyā paramayā yukto mahendra iva vajrabhṛt॥03-229-13॥

(Filled with intoxicated bees, filled with the cries of peacocks and in succession he went to the holy Dwaita forest lake, endowed with supreme prosperity like Mahendra, the wielder of the thunderbolt.)

यदृच्छया च तदहो धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। ईजे राजर्षियज्ञेन सद्यस्केन विशां पते ॥ दिव्येन विधिना राजा वन्येन कुरुसत्तमः ॥०३-२२९-१४॥
yadṛcchayā ca tadaho dharmaputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। īje rājarṣiyajñena sadyaskena viśāṃ pate॥ divyena vidhinā rājā vanyena kurusattamaḥ॥03-229-14॥

(By chance and then indeed, the son of Dharma, Yudhiṣṭhira, performed a royal sage's sacrifice, immediately undertaken, O lord of men. With the divine ritual method, the king, with forest produce, O best of Kurus.)
By his own will, O best of Kurus, the son of Dharma, Yudhiṣṭhira, then indeed performed the royal sage's sacrifice at once, O lord of men, with the divine ritual method and forest produce. (03-229-14)
कृत्वा निवेशमभितः सरसस्तस्य कौरवः। द्रौपद्या सहितो धीमान्धर्मपत्न्या नराधिपः ॥०३-२२९-१५॥
kṛtvā niveśam abhitaḥ sarasas tasya kauravaḥ। draupadyā sahito dhīmān dharma-patnyā narādhipaḥ॥03-229-15॥

tato duryodhanaḥ preṣyān ādideśa sahānujaḥ. ākrīḍāvasathāḥ kṣipraṁ kriyantām iti bhārata ॥03-229-16॥

गणैरप्सरसां चैव त्रिदशानां तथात्मजैः। विहारशीलः क्रीडार्थं तेन तत्संवृतं सरः ॥०३-२२९-२०॥
gaṇair apsarasāṃ caiva tridaśānāṃ tathātmajaiḥ। vihāraśīlaḥ krīḍārthaṃ tena tatsaṃvṛtaṃ saraḥ॥03-229-20॥

(By groups of apsarases and also by the sons of the gods, indeed, fond of sport, for the sake of play, by him, that lake was covered.)
That lake was filled for sport by groups of apsarases as well as the sons of the gods who enjoyed amusement. (03-229-20)
तेन तत्संवृतं दृष्ट्वा ते राजपरिचारकाः। प्रतिजग्मुस्ततो राजन्यत्र दुर्योधनो नृपः ॥०३-२२९-२१॥
tena tatsaṁvṛtaṁ dṛṣṭvā te rājaparicārakāḥ। pratijagmusta to rājan yatra duryodhano nṛpaḥ॥03-229-21॥

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा राज्ञः सेनाग्रयायिनः। सरो द्वैतवनं गत्वा гन्धर्वानिदमब्रुवन् ॥०३-२२९-२३॥
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā rājñaḥ senāgrayāyinaḥ। saraḥ dvaitavanaṃ gatvā gandharvān idam abruvan ॥03-229-23॥

राजा दुर्योधनो नाम धृतराष्ट्रसुतो बली। विजिहीर्षुरिहायाति तदर्थमपसर्पत ॥०३-२२९-२४॥
rājā duryodhanaḥ nāma dhṛtarāṣṭra-suto balī। vijihiṛṣuḥ iha āyāti tadartham apasarpata ॥03-229-24॥

न चेतयति वो राजा मन्दबुद्धिः सुयोधनः। योऽस्मानाज्ञापयत्येवं वश्यानिव दिवौकसः ॥०३-२२९-२६॥
na cetayati vo rājā mandabuddhiḥ suyodhanaḥ। yo'smānājñāpayatyevaṃ vaśyāniva divaukasaḥ॥03-229-26॥

यूयं मुमूर्षवश्चापि मन्दप्रज्ञा न संशयः। ये तस्य वचनादेवमस्मान्ब्रूत विचेतसः ॥०३-२२९-२७॥
yūyaṃ mumūrṣavaś cāpi mandaprajñā na saṃśayaḥ। ye tasya vacanād evam asmān brūta vicetasaḥ ॥03-229-27॥

गच्छत त्वरिताः सर्वे यत्र राजा स कौरवः। द्वेष्यं माद्यैव गच्छध्वं धर्मराजनिवेशनम् ॥०३-२२९-२८॥
gacchata tvaritāḥ sarve yatra rājā sa kauravaḥ। dveṣyaṃ mādyai 'va gacchadhvaṃ dharmarājaniveśanam॥03-229-28॥

एवमुक्तास्तु गन्धर्वै राज्ञः सेनाग्रयायिनः। सम्प्राद्रवन्यतो राजा धृतराष्ट्रसुतोऽभवत् ॥०३-२२९-२९॥

Thus, having been addressed by the Gandharvas, the king's vanguard fled, so the king, son of Dhritarashtra, was left behind. (03-229-29)
