ततस्ते सहिताः सर्वे दुर्योधनमुपागमन्। अब्रुवंश्च महाराज यदूचुः कौरवं प्रति ॥०३-२३०-१॥
tataste sahitāḥ sarve duryodhanam upāgaman। abruvaṃś ca mahārāja yad ūcuḥ kauravaṃ prati ॥03-230-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; सर्वे (sarve) - all; दुर्योधनम् (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana (accusative singular); उपागमन् (upāgaman) - approached; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - they spoke; च (ca) - and; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; यत् (yat) - what; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - they said; कौरवम् (kauravam) - to the Kaurava; प्रति (prati) - to;]
(Then they all together approached Duryodhana; and, O great king, what they said to the Kaurava.)
Then all of them together approached Duryodhana; and, O great king, this is what they said to the Kaurava. (03-230-1)
गन्धर्वैर्वारिते सैन्ये धार्तराष्ट्रः प्रतापवान्। अमर्षपूर्णः सैन्यानि प्रत्यभाषत भारत ॥०३-२३०-२॥
gandharvair vārite sainye dhārtarāṣṭraḥ pratāpavān। amarṣapūrṇaḥ sainyāni pratyabhāṣata bhārata ॥03-230-2॥
[गन्धर्वैः (gandharvaiḥ) - by the Gandharvas; वारिते (vārite) - having been repelled; सैन्ये (sainye) - when the army; धार्तराष्ट्रः (dhārtarāṣṭraḥ) - the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - mighty; अमर्षपूर्णः (amarṣapūrṇaḥ) - filled with indignation; सैन्यानि (sainyāni) - the armies; प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - addressed; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(By the Gandharvas, when the army had been repelled, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, mighty, filled with indignation, addressed the armies, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, when the army had been repelled by the Gandharvas, the mighty son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, filled with indignation, addressed the armies. (03-230-2)
शासतैनानधर्मज्ञान्मम विप्रियकारिणः। यदि प्रक्रीडितो देवैः सर्वैः सह शतक्रतुः ॥०३-२३०-३॥
śāsatainānadharmajñān mama vipriyakāriṇaḥ। yadi prakrīḍito devaiḥ sarvaiḥ saha śatakratuḥ॥03-230-3॥
[शासतै (śāsatai) - (he/one) should punish; (from śās, 'to punish/teach'); एनान् (enān) - these (people); अधर्मज्ञान् (adharmajñān) - not-knowing (or ignorant) of dharma; मम (mama) - of mine; विप्रियकारिणः (vipriyakāriṇaḥ) - doers of unpleasant (or harmful) acts; यदि (yadi) - if; प्रक्रीडितः (prakrīḍitaḥ) - made a play (of), played with; देवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - by all; सह (saha) - together with; शतक्रतुः (śatakratuḥ) - Indra (epithet: 'one of a hundred sacrifices');]
(Let him punish these ignorant of dharma, the doers of what is unpleasant to me. If Indra, together with all the gods, has made it a mere sport—)
Let him punish those who, being ignorant of dharma, commit acts displeasing to me. If Indra, together with all the gods, has only been making sport of this— (03-230-3)
दुर्योधनवचः श्रुत्वा धार्तराष्ट्रा महाबलाः। सर्व एवाभिसंनद्धा योधाश्चापि सहस्रशः ॥०३-२३०-४॥
duryodhanavacaḥ śrutvā dhārtarāṣṭrā mahābalāḥ। sarva evābhisaṃnaddhā yodhāś cāpi sahasraśaḥ ॥03-230-4॥
[दुर्योधनवचः (duryodhanavacaḥ) - Duryodhana-vacahaḥ (the words of Duryodhana); श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; धार्तराष्ट्राः (dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ) - the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; महाबलाः (mahābalāḥ) - mighty; सर्वे (sarve) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; अभिसंनद्धाः (abhisaṃnaddhāḥ) - fully armed; योधाः (yodhāḥ) - warriors; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands;]
(Having heard the words of Duryodhana, the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, mighty, all indeed, fully armed, and also the warriors by thousands.)
Having heard Duryodhana's words, all the mighty sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra and thousands of warriors fully armed themselves. (03-230-4)
ततः प्रमथ्य गन्धर्वांस्तद्वनं विविशुर्बलात्। सिंहनादेन महता पूरयन्तो दिशो दश ॥०३-२३०-५॥
tataḥ pramathya gandharvāṃs tad vanaṃ viviśur balāt. siṃhanādena mahatā pūrayanto diśo daśa ॥03-230-5॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रमथ्य (pramathya) - having overpowered; गन्धर्वान् (gandharvān) - the Gandharvas; तत् (tat) - that; वनम् (vanam) - forest; विविशुः (viviśuḥ) - entered; बलात् (balāt) - by force; सिंहनादेन (siṃhanādena) - with a lion’s roar; महता (mahatā) - great; पूरयन्तः (pūrayantaḥ) - filling; दिशः (diśaḥ) - the directions; दश (daśa) - ten;]
(Then, having overpowered the Gandharvas, they entered that forest by force, filling the ten directions with a great lion’s roar.)
Then, having subdued the Gandharvas, they forcefully entered that forest, resounding a great lion’s roar in all ten directions. (03-230-5)
ततोऽपरैरवार्यन्त गन्धर्वैः कुरुसैनिकाः। ते वार्यमाणा गन्धर्वैः साम्नैव वसुधाधिप ॥ ताननादृत्य गन्धर्वांस्तद्वनं विविशुर्महत् ॥०३-२३०-६॥
tato'parair avāryanta gandharvaiḥ kurusainikāḥ। te vāryamāṇā gandharvaiḥ sāmnaiva vasudhādhipaḥ॥ tān anādṛtya gandharvān tad vanaṃ viviśur mahat॥03-230-6॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; अपरैः (aparaiḥ) - by others; अवार्यन्त (avāryanta) - were warded off; गन्धर्वैः (gandharvaiḥ) - by the Gandharvas; कुरुसैनिकाः (kurusainikāḥ) - the Kuru soldiers; ते (te) - they; वार्यमाणाः (vāryamāṇāḥ) - being checked; गन्धर्वैः (gandharvaiḥ) - by the Gandharvas; साम्ना (sāmnā) - with gentle words; एव (eva) - only; वसुधाधिपः (vasudhādhipaḥ) - the lord of the earth; तान् (tān) - them; अनादृत्य (anādṛtya) - disregarding; गन्धर्वान् (gandharvān) - the Gandharvas; तत् (tat) - that; वनम् (vanam) - forest; विविशुः (viviśuḥ) - entered; महत् (mahat) - great;]
(Thereafter, by others, were warded off by the Gandharvas the Kuru soldiers. They, being checked by the Gandharvas only with gentle words, the lord of the earth, them, disregarding the Gandharvas, that great forest entered.)
Thereafter, the Kuru soldiers were kept away by the Gandharvas. Although the Gandharvas tried to restrain them gently, the lord of the earth, disregarding the Gandharvas, entered that great forest along with them. (03-230-6)
यदा वाचा न तिष्ठन्ति धार्तराष्ट्राः सराजकाः। ततस्ते खेचराः सर्वे चित्रसेने न्यवेदयन् ॥०३-२३०-७॥
yadā vācā na tiṣṭhanti dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ sarājakāḥ. tatas te khecarāḥ sarve citrasene nyavedayan ॥03-230-7॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; वाचा (vācā) - by speech; न (na) - not; तिष्ठन्ति (tiṣṭhanti) - they remain; धार्तराष्ट्राः (dhārtarāṣṭrāḥ) - the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; स-राजकाः (sarājakāḥ) - with kings; ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; खेचराः (khecarāḥ) - those who move in the sky; सर्वे (sarve) - all; चित्रसेने (citrasene) - to Citraseṇa; न्यवेदयन् (nyavedayan) - they reported;]
(When by speech the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra with the kings did not remain, then they, all the sky-movers, reported to Citraseṇa.)
When the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra along with the kings did not remain silent in speech, then all the sky-dwellers reported this to Citraseṇa. (03-230-7)
गन्धर्वराजस्तान्सर्वानब्रवीत्कौरवान्प्रति। अनार्याञ्शासतेत्येवं चित्रसेनोऽत्यमर्षणः ॥०३-२३०-८॥
gandharvarājās tān sarvān abravīt kauravān prati। anāryān śāsate iti evam citrasenaḥ atyamarṣaṇaḥ ॥03-230-8॥
[गन्धर्वराजः (gandharvarājaḥ) - king of the Gandharvas; तान् (tān) - them; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; कौरवान् (kauravān) - to the Kauravas; प्रति (prati) - towards; अनार्यान् (anāryān) - unworthy ones; शासते (śāsate) - rules; इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this way; चित्रसेनः (citrasenaḥ) - Citrasena; अत्यमर्षणः (atyamarṣaṇaḥ) - exceedingly intolerant;]
(The king of the Gandharvas said all this to the Kauravas: 'He rules over the unworthy ones'—thus, Citrasena, exceedingly intolerant.)
The king of the Gandharvas spoke all this to the Kauravas: 'He rules over the unworthy.' Thus declared Citrasena, highly intolerant. (03-230-8)
अनुज्ञातास्तु गन्धर्वाश्चित्रसेनेन भारत। प्रगृहीतायुधाः सर्वे धार्तराष्ट्रानभिद्रवन् ॥०३-२३०-९॥
anugñātās tu gandharvāś citrasenena bhārata। pragṛhītāyudhāḥ sarve dhārtarāṣṭrān abhidravan ॥03-230-9॥
[अनुज्ञाताः (anugñātāḥ) - permitted; तु (tu) - but; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - the Gandharvas; चित्रसेनेन (citrasenena) - by Citraseṇa; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; प्रगृहीतायुधाः (pragṛhītāyudhāḥ) - having seized weapons; सर्वे (sarve) - all; धार्तराष्ट्रान् (dhārtarāṣṭrān) - the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; अभिद्रवन् (abhidravan) - attacked;]
(But permitted, the Gandharvas by Citraseṇa, O Bhārata, all, having seized weapons, the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, attacked.)
But, O Bhārata, the Gandharvas, granted permission by Citraseṇa, all seized their weapons and attacked the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra. (03-230-9)
तान्दृष्ट्वा पततः शीघ्रान्गन्धर्वानुद्यतायुधान्। सर्वे ते प्राद्रवन्सङ्ख्ये धार्तराष्ट्रस्य पश्यतः ॥०३-२३०-१०॥
tān dṛṣṭvā patataḥ śīghrān gandharvān udyatāyudhān। sarve te prādravan saṅkhye dhārtarāṣṭrasya paśyataḥ॥03-230-10॥
[तान् (tān) - them; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पततः (patataḥ) - falling; शीघ्रान् (śīghrān) - rapid; गन्धर्वान् (gandharvān) - Gandharvas; उद्यतायुधान् (udyatāyudhān) - with weapons raised; सर्वे (sarve) - all; ते (te) - they; प्राद्रवन् (prādravan) - fled; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; धार्तराष्ट्रस्य (dhārtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhritarashtra (son of Dhritarashtra); पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - as (he) was watching;]
(Having seen those rapid Gandharvas, falling (upon them), with weapons raised, all they fled in battle as son of Dhritarashtra was watching.)
When they saw those swift Gandharvas descending upon them with weapons raised, all of them fled the battlefield while the son of Dhritarashtra looked on. (03-230-10)
तान्दृष्ट्वा द्रवतः सर्वान्धार्तराष्ट्रान्पराङ्मुखान्। वैकर्तनस्तदा वीरो नासीत्तत्र पराङ्मुखः ॥०३-२३०-११॥
tān dṛṣṭvā dravataḥ sarvān dhārtarāṣṭrān parāṅmukhān। vaikartanas tadā vīro nāsīt tatra parāṅmukhaḥ॥ 03-230-11॥
[तान् (tān) - them; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; द्रवतः (dravataḥ) - fleeing; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; धार्तराष्ट्रान् (dhārtarāṣṭrān) - sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; पराङ्मुखान् (parāṅmukhān) - with turned faces; वैकर्तनः (vaikartanaḥ) - the son of Vikartana (Karna); तदा (tadā) - then; वीरः (vīraḥ) - hero; न (na) - not; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; तत्र (tatra) - there; पराङ्मुखः (parāṅmukhaḥ) - turned away;]
(Having seen them all, the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, fleeing, with turned faces, then the son of Vikartana (Karna), the hero, was not there turned away.)
Seeing that all the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra were fleeing and turning their faces away, Karna, the heroic son of Vikartana, was not turned away there. (03-230-11)
आपतन्तीं तु सम्प्रेक्ष्य गन्धर्वाणां महाचमूम्। महता शरवर्षेण राधेयः प्रत्यवारयत् ॥०३-२३०-१२॥
āpatantīṁ tu samprekṣya gandharvāṇāṁ mahācamūm। mahatā śaravarṣeṇa rādheyaḥ pratyavārayat ॥03-230-12॥
[आपतन्तीं (āpatantīm) - attacking; coming upon; तु (tu) - but; सम्प्रेक्ष्य (samprekṣya) - having observed; seeing; गन्धर्वाणां (gandharvāṇām) - of the Gandharvas; महाचमूम् (mahācamūm) - great army; महता (mahatā) - with great; शरवर्षेण (śaravarṣeṇa) - with a shower of arrows; राधेयः (rādheyaḥ) - Rādheya; Karṇa; प्रत्यवारयत् (pratyavārayat) - held back; repulsed;]
(Attacking but having observed the Gandharvas' great army, with a great shower of arrows, Rādheya held back.)
But seeing the great army of the Gandharvas attacking, Rādheya (Karṇa) repulsed them with a mighty shower of arrows. (03-230-12)
क्षुरप्रैर्विशिखैर्भल्लैर्वत्सदन्तैस्तथायसैः। गन्धर्वाञ्शतशोऽभ्यघ्नँल्लघुत्वात्सूतनन्दनः ॥०३-२३०-१३॥
kṣuraprair viśikhair bhallair vatsadantais tathāyasaiḥ। gandharvāñ śataśo'bhya-ghnan laghutvāt sūta-nandanaḥ॥03-230-13॥
[क्षुरप्रैः (kṣurapraiḥ) - with razor-headed arrows; विशिखैः (viśikhaiḥ) - with sharp arrows; भल्लैः (bhallaiḥ) - with broad-headed arrows; वत्सदन्तैः (vatsadantaiḥ) - with calf-tooth (arrowheads); तथा (tathā) - also; आयसैः (āyasaiḥ) - with iron (arrows); गन्धर्वान् (gandharvān) - the Gandharvas; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - by hundreds; अभ्यघ्नत् (abhyaghnat) - slaughtered; लघुत्वात् (laghutvāt) - due to lightness; सूतनन्दनः (sūtanandanaḥ) - the son of the charioteer;]
(With razor-headed arrows, with sharp arrows, with broad-headed arrows, with calf-tooth head arrows, also with iron (arrows), the Gandharvas by hundreds he slaughtered, due to lightness, the son of the charioteer.)
The son of the charioteer, being agile, slaughtered the Gandharvas by the hundreds with razor-headed, sharp, broad-headed, calf-tooth, and iron arrows. (03-230-13)
पातयन्नुत्तमाङ्गानि गन्धर्वाणां महारथः। क्षणेन व्यधमत्सर्वां चित्रसेनस्य वाहिनीम् ॥०३-२३०-१४॥
pātayannuttamāṅgāni gandharvāṇāṃ mahārathaḥ। kṣaṇena vyadhamatsarvāṃ citrasenasya vāhinīm ॥03-230-14॥
[पातयन् (pātayan) - causing to fall; उत्तमाङ्गानि (uttamāṅgāni) - heads; गन्धर्वाणां (gandharvāṇāṃ) - of the Gandharvas; महारथः (mahārathaḥ) - the great chariot-warrior; क्षणेन (kṣaṇena) - in an instant; व्यधमत् (vyadhamat) - shattered; सर्वां (sarvāṃ) - all; चित्रसेनस्य (citrasenasya) - of Citraseṇa; वाहिनीम् (vāhinīm) - the army;]
(Causing the heads of the Gandharvas to fall, the great chariot-warrior in an instant shattered all of Citraseṇa's army.)
The great chariot-warrior, causing the heads of the Gandharvas to fall, in an instant shattered the entire army of Citraseṇa. (03-230-14)
ते वध्यमाना गन्धर्वाः सूतपुत्रेण धीमता। भूय एवाभ्यवर्तन्त शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः ॥०३-२३०-१५॥
te vadhyamānā gandharvāḥ sūta-putreṇa dhīmatā. bhūya evābhyavartanta śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ ॥03-230-15॥
[ते (te) - they; वध्यमाना (vadhyamānāḥ) - being slain; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - Gandharvas; सूतपुत्रेण (sūta-putreṇa) - by the son of the charioteer; धीमता (dhīmatā) - wise; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; अभ्यवर्तन्त (abhyavartanta) - approached (again); शतशः (śataśaḥ) - by hundreds; अथ (atha) - and then; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands;]
(They, being slain, the Gandharvas, by the son of the charioteer, wise, again indeed approached, by hundreds and then by thousands.)
Though being slain by the wise son of the charioteer, the Gandharvas kept returning again and again, by the hundreds and then by the thousands. (03-230-15)
गन्धर्वभूता पृथिवी क्षणेन समपद्यत। आपतद्भिर्महावेगैश्चित्रसेनस्य सैनिकैः ॥०३-२३०-१६॥
gandharvabhūtā pṛthivī kṣaṇena samapadyata। āpatadbhir mahāvegaiś citrasenasya sainikaiḥ ॥03-230-16॥
[गन्धर्वभूता (gandharvabhūtā) - having become like Gandharvas; (i.e., appearing otherworldly;) पृथिवी (pṛthivī) - the earth; क्षणेन (kṣaṇena) - in a moment; समपद्यत (samapadyata) - became; (transformed;) आपतद्भिः (āpatadbhir) - rushing (ones); महावेगैः (mahāvegaiḥ) - with great speed; चित्रसेनस्य (citrasenasya) - of Citraseṇa; सैनिकैः (sainikaiḥ) - by the warriors;]
(The earth, having become like Gandharvas, in a moment was transformed by the rushing ones with great speed—by the warriors of Citraseṇa.)
In a single moment, the earth was made to appear as if inhabited by Gandharvas, transformed by the warriors of Citraseṇa rushing forth with tremendous speed. (03-230-16)
अथ दुर्योधनो राजा शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः। दुःशासनो विकर्णश्च ये चान्ये धृतराष्ट्रजाः ॥ न्यहनंस्तत्तदा सैन्यं रथैर्गरुडनिस्वनैः ॥०३-२३०-१७॥
atha duryodhanaḥ rājā śakuniś cāpi saubalaḥ| duḥśāsano vikarṇaś ca ye ca anye dhṛtarāṣṭrajāḥ|| nyahananta tadā sainyam rathaiḥ garuḍa-nisvanaiḥ||03-230-17||
[अथ (atha) - then; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; राजा (rājā) - king; शकुनिः (śakuniḥ) - Śakuni; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सौबलः (saubalaḥ) - son of Subala; दुःशासनः (duḥśāsanaḥ) - Duḥśāsana; विकर्णः (vikarṇaḥ) - Vikarṇa; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - those who; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; धृतराष्ट्रजाः (dhṛtarāṣṭrajāḥ) - sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; न्यहनन् (nyahanan) - struck down; तत् (tat) - that; तदा (tadā) - then; सैन्यम् (sainyam) - the army; रथैः (rathaiḥ) - with chariots; गरुडनिस्वनैः (garuḍa-nisvanaiḥ) - having the roar of Garuḍa;]
(Then Duryodhana king Śakuni also son of Subala Duḥśāsana Vikarṇa and those who and others sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra struck down that then army with chariots having the roar of Garuḍa.)
Then King Duryodhana, Śakuni the son of Subala, Duḥśāsana, Vikarṇa, and the other sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra struck down the army at that time with chariots roaring like Garuḍa. (03-230-17)
भूयश्च योधयामासुः कृत्वा कर्णमथाग्रतः। महता रथघोषेण हयचारेण चाप्युत ॥ वैकर्तनं परीप्सन्तो गन्धर्वान्समवारयन् ॥०३-२३०-१८॥
bhūyaś ca yodhayāmāsuḥ kṛtvā karṇam athāgrataḥ. mahatā rathaghoṣeṇa hayacāreṇa cāpyuta ॥ vaikartanaṃ parīpsanto gandharvān samavārayān ॥ 03-230-18॥
[भूयः (bhūyaḥ) (bhūyaḥ) - again; च (ca) (ca) - and; योधयामासुः (yodhayāmāsuḥ) (yodhayāmāsuḥ) - they engaged in battle; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) (kṛtvā) - having placed; कर्णम् (karṇam) (karṇam) - Karṇa; अथ (atha) (atha) - then; अग्रतः (agrataḥ) (agrataḥ) - in front; महता (mahatā) (mahatā) - with great; रथघोषेण (rathaghoṣeṇa) (rathaghoṣeṇa) - with the sound of chariots; हयचारेण (hayacāreṇa) (hayacāreṇa) - with the movement of horses; च (ca) (ca) - and; अपि (api) (api) - also; उत (uta) (uta) - indeed; वैकर्तनम् (vaikartanam) (vaikartanam) - Vaikartana (epithet of Karṇa); परीप्सन्तः (parīpsantaḥ) (parīpsantaḥ) - desiring to reach; गन्धर्वान् (gandharvān) (gandharvān) - Gandharvas; समवारयन् (samavārayan) (samavārayan) - they restrained;]
(Again and they engaged in battle, having placed Karṇa then in front, with great sound of chariots and with movement of horses also indeed. Vaikartana desiring to reach, the Gandharvas they restrained.)

ततः संन्यपतन्सर्वे गन्धर्वाः कौरवैः सह। तदा सुतुमुलं युद्धमभवल्लोमहर्षणम् ॥०३-२३०-१९॥
tataḥ saṃnyapatansarve gandharvāḥ kauravaiḥ saha। tadā sutumulaṃ yuddhamabhavallomaharṣaṇam ॥03-230-19॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - thereupon; संन्यपतन् (saṃnyapatan) - fell down together; सर्वे (sarve) - all; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - the Gandharvas; कौरवैः (kauravaiḥ) - with the Kauravas; सह (saha) - together with; तदा (tadā) - then; सुतुमुलं (sutumulaṃ) - very tumultuous; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; लोमहर्षणम् (lomaharṣaṇam) - hair-raising;]
(Thereupon, all the Gandharvas fell down together with the Kauravas; then a very tumultuous, hair-raising battle ensued.)
Then all the Gandharvas fell together with the Kauravas, and at that time a very tumultuous and hair-raising battle took place. (03-230-19)
ततस्ते मृदवोऽभूवन्गन्धर्वाः शरपीडिताः। उच्चुक्रुशुश्च कौरव्या गन्धर्वान्प्रेक्ष्य पीडितान् ॥०३-२३०-२०॥
tataste mṛdavo'bhūvan gandharvāḥ śarapīḍitāḥ। uccukruśuś ca kauravyā gandharvān prekṣya pīḍitān ॥03-230-20॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; मृदवः (mṛdavaḥ) - soft (gentle, weakened); अभूवन् (abhūvan) - became; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - Gandharvas; शरपीडिताः (śarapīḍitāḥ) - afflicted by arrows; उच्चुक्रुशुः (uccukruśuḥ) - cried out loudly; च (ca) - and; कौरव्याः (kauravyāḥ) - the Kauravas; गन्धर्वान् (gandharvān) - the Gandharvas; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - seeing; पीडितान् (pīḍitān) - afflicted;]
(Then they became gentle the Gandharvas afflicted by arrows. The Kauravas also cried out loudly seeing the Gandharvas afflicted.)
Then, the Gandharvas, afflicted by arrows, became weakened; and the Kauravas cried out loudly on seeing the Gandharvas suffering. (03-230-20)
गन्धर्वांस्त्रासितान्दृष्ट्वा चित्रसेनोऽत्यमर्षणः। उत्पपातासनात्क्रुद्धो वधे तेषां समाहितः ॥०३-२३०-२१॥
gandharvāṃstrāsitāndṛṣṭvā citraseno'tyamarṣaṇaḥ। utpapātāsanātkruddho vadhe teṣāṃ samāhitaḥ ॥03-230-21॥
[गन्धर्वान् (gandharvān) - the Gandharvas (celestial musicians); त्रासितान् (trāsitān) - frightened; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; चित्रसेनः (citrasenaḥ) - Citrasena (proper noun); अत्य्-अमर्षणः (aty-amarṣaṇaḥ) - very intolerant; उत्पपात (utpapāta) - sprang up; आसनात् (āsanāt) - from the seat; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; वधे (vadhe) - to the killing; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - resolved;]
(Having seen the Gandharvas frightened, Citrasena, very intolerant, sprang up from the seat, angry, resolved upon their killing.)
Seeing the Gandharvas frightened, the very intolerant Citrasena sprang from his seat in anger, resolved to kill them. (03-230-21)
ततो मायास्त्रमास्थाय युयुधे चित्रमार्गवित्। तयामुह्यन्त कौरव्याश्चित्रसेनस्य मायया ॥०३-२३०-२२॥
tato māyāstram āsthāya yuyudhe citramārgavit। tayām uhyanta kauravyāś citrasenasya māyayā ॥03-230-22॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; मायास्त्रम् (māyāstram) - illusion-weapon; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having assumed; युयुधे (yuyudhe) - (he) fought; चित्रमार्गवित् (citramārgavit) - knower of wondrous ways; तया (tayā) - by that (illusion-weapon); मुह्यन्त (muhyanta) - were deluded; कौरव्याः (kauravyāḥ) - the Kauravas; चित्रसेनस्य (citrasenasya) - of Citraseṇa; मायया (māyayā) - by (his) illusion;]
(Then, having assumed the illusion-weapon, the knower of wondrous ways fought; by that, the Kauravas were deluded by Citraseṇa's illusion.)
Then, Citraseṇa, the knower of wondrous ways, having assumed the illusion-weapon, fought; by that illusion of Citraseṇa, the Kauravas were deluded. (03-230-22)
एकैको हि तदा योधो धार्तराष्ट्रस्य भारत। पर्यवर्तत गन्धर्वैर्दशभिर्दशभिः सह ॥०३-२३०-२३॥
ekaiko hi tadā yodho dhārtarāṣṭrasya bhārata। paryavartata gandharvair daśabhir daśabhiḥ saha ॥03-230-23॥
[एकैकः (ekaikaḥ) - each one; every single (person); हि (hi) - indeed; for; तदा (tadā) - at that time; then; योधः (yodhaḥ) - warrior; धार्तराष्ट्रस्य (dhārtarāṣṭrasya) - of Dhritarashtra's (son); भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; पर्यवर्तत (paryavartata) - turned back; was turned back; गन्धर्वैः (gandharvaiḥ) - by the Gandharvas; दशभिः (daśabhiḥ) - by ten; दशभिः (daśabhiḥ) - with ten; सह (saha) - together; with;]
(Each and every warrior of Dhritarashtra, O Bhārata, at that time indeed, was turned back by the Gandharvas, by ten together with ten.)
O Bhārata, each of Dhritarashtra's warriors was turned back at that time by the Gandharvas, ten by ten together. (03-230-23)
ततः सम्पीड्यमानास्ते बलेन महता तदा। प्राद्रवन्त रणे भीता यत्र राजा युधिष्ठिरः ॥०३-२३०-२४॥
tataḥ sampīḍyamānās te balena mahatā tadā। prādravanta raṇe bhītā yatra rājā yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥03-230-24॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सम्पीड्यमानाः (sampīḍyamānāḥ) - being pressed, oppressed; ते (te) - they; बलेन (balena) - by force; महता (mahatā) - great; तदा (tadā) - at that time; प्राद्रवन्त (prādravanta) - they fled; रणे (raṇe) - in the battle; भीता (bhītā) - afraid; यत्र (yatra) - where; राजा (rājā) - king; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira;]
(Then, being oppressed they by great force at that time, they fled in the battle afraid, where king Yudhishthira (was).)

भज्यमानेष्वनीकेषु धार्तराष्ट्रेषु सर्वशः। कर्णो वैकर्तनो राजंस्तस्थौ गिरिरिवाचलः ॥०३-२३०-२५॥
bhajyamāneṣv anīkeṣu dhārtarāṣṭreṣu sarvaśaḥ। karṇo vaikarṭano rājaṁs tasthau girir ivācalah ॥03-230-25॥
[भज्यमानेषु (bhajyamāneṣu) - being broken; (in the plural, locative); अनीकेषु (anīkeṣu) - in the troops; (locative plural); धार्तराष्ट्रेषु (dhārtarāṣṭreṣu) - among the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra; (locative plural); सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - everywhere; from all sides; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; (proper noun); वैकर्तनः (vaikarṭanaḥ) - the son of Vikartana; (epithet of Karṇa); राजन् (rājan) - O king; तस्थौ (tasthau) - stood; (past tense singular); गिरिः (giriḥ) - mountain; इव (iva) - like; as; अचलः (acalaḥ) - unmoving; immovable;]
(When the troops of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra were being broken everywhere, Karṇa, the son of Vikartana, O king, stood like an unmoving mountain.)
O king, as the troops of the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra were breaking everywhere, Karṇa, the son of Vikartana, stood firm like an immovable mountain. (03-230-25)
दुर्योधनश्च कर्णश्च शकुनिश्चापि सौबलः। गन्धर्वान्योधयां चक्रुः समरे भृशविक्षताः ॥०३-२३०-२६॥
duryodhanaś ca karṇaś ca śakuniś cāpi saubalaḥ। gandharvān yodhayāṃ cakruḥ samare bhṛśavikṣatāḥ ॥03-230-26॥
[दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; च (ca) - and; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karna; च (ca) - and; शकुनिः (śakuniḥ) - Śakuni; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सौबलः (saubalaḥ) - son of Subala; गन्धर्वान् (gandharvān) - Gandharvas; योधयाम् (yodhayām) - to fight; चक्रुः (cakruḥ) - they made; समरे (samare) - in battle; भृशविक्षताः (bhṛśavikṣatāḥ) - severely wounded;]
(Duryodhana and Karna and Śakuni also, son of Subala, Gandharvas to fight they made in battle, severely wounded.)
Duryodhana, Karna, and also Śakuni, the son of Subala, severely wounded, engaged the Gandharvas in battle. (03-230-26)
सर्व एव तु गन्धर्वाः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः। जिघांसमानाः सहिताः कर्णमभ्यद्रवन्रणे ॥०३-२३०-२७॥
sarva eva tu gandharvāḥ śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ। jighāṃsamānāḥ sahitāḥ karṇam abhyadravan raṇe ॥03-230-27॥
[सर्व (sarva) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; तु (tu) - but; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - the gandharvas; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - in hundreds; अथ (atha) - then; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - in thousands; जिघांसमानाः (jighāṃsamānāḥ) - wishing to kill; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; कर्णम् (karṇam) - Karna; अभ्यद्रवन् (abhyadravan) - rushed toward; रणे (raṇe) - in battle;]
(All indeed but the gandharvas, in hundreds then in thousands, wishing to kill, together rushed toward Karna in battle.)
But all the gandharvas, in hundreds and then in thousands, joined together and, wishing to kill, rushed at Karna in battle. (03-230-27)
असिभिः पट्टिशैः शूलैर्गदाभिश्च महाबलाः। सूतपुत्रं जिघांसन्तः समन्तात्पर्यवारयन् ॥०३-२३०-२८॥
asibhiḥ paṭṭiśaiḥ śūlair gadābhiś ca mahābalāḥ। sūtaputraṃ jighāṃsantaḥ samantāt paryavārayan ॥03-230-28॥
[असिभिः (asibhiḥ) - with swords; पट्टिशैः (paṭṭiśaiḥ) - with lances; शूलैः (śūlaiḥ) - with spears; गदाभिः (gadābhiḥ) - with maces; च (ca) - and; महाबलाः (mahābalāḥ) - mighty ones; सूतपुत्रम् (sūtaputram) - the son of the charioteer; जिघांसन्तः (jighāṃsantaḥ) - seeking to kill; समन्तात् (samantāt) - on all sides; पवारीवारयन् (paryavārayan) - they surrounded;]
(With swords, lances, spears, and maces, the mighty ones, seeking to kill the son of the charioteer, surrounded (him) on all sides.)
The mighty warriors, armed with swords, lances, spears, and maces, surrounded the son of the charioteer from all sides, intent on killing him. (03-230-28)
अन्येऽस्य युगमच्छिन्दन्ध्वजमन्ये न्यपातयन्। ईषामन्ये हयानन्ये सूतमन्ये न्यपातयन् ॥०३-२३०-२९॥
anye'sya yugam acchindan dhvajam anye nyapātayan। īṣām anye hayān anye sūtam anye nyapātayan॥03-230-29॥
[अन्ये (anye) - others; अस्य (asya) - his; युगम् (yugam) - yoke; अच्छिन्दन् (acchindan) - cut (off); ध्वजम् (dhvajam) - banner; अन्ये (anye) - others; न्यपातयन् (nyapātayan) - caused to fall; ईषाम् (īṣām) - shafts (of the chariot); अन्ये (anye) - others; हयान् (hayān) - horses; अन्ये (anye) - others; सूतम् (sūtam) - charioteer; अन्ये (anye) - others; न्यपातयन् (nyapātayan) - caused to fall;]
(Others his yoke cut (off); banner others caused to fall; shafts others, horses others, charioteer others caused to fall.)
Some others cut off his yoke; others brought down his banner; some struck down the shafts, others the horses, and others brought down the charioteer. (03-230-29)
अन्ये छत्रं वरूथं च बन्धुरं च तथापरे। गन्धर्वा बहुसाहस्राः खण्डशोऽभ्यहनन्रथम् ॥०३-२३०-३०॥
anye chatraṃ varūthaṃ ca bandhuraṃ ca tathāpare। gandharvā bahusāhasrāḥ khaṇḍaśo’bhyahananratham ॥03-230-30॥
[अन्ये (anye) - others; छत्रं (chatraṃ) - parasol; वरूथं (varūthaṃ) - covering; च (ca) - and; बन्धुरं (bandhuraṃ) - ornament; च (ca) - and; तथापरे (tathāpare) - similarly others; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - Gandharvas; बहुसाहस्राः (bahusāhasrāḥ) - many thousands; खण्डशः (khaṇḍaśaḥ) - in pieces; अभ्यहनन् (abhyahanan) - struck; रथम् (ratham) - chariot;]
(Others (attacked) the parasol, the covering and the ornament and likewise others. The Gandharvas, many thousands, in pieces struck the chariot.)
Others attacked the parasol, the covering, and the ornament, and similarly, other Gandharvas by the thousands struck the chariot and shattered it into pieces. (03-230-30)
ततो रथादवप्लुत्य सूतपुत्रोऽसिचर्मभृत्। विकर्णरथमास्थाय मोक्षायाश्वानचोदयत् ॥०३-२३०-३१॥
tato rathād avaplutya sūtaputro'sicarmabhṛt। vikarṇaratham āsthāya mokṣāyāśvān acodayat ॥03-230-31॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; after that; रथात् (rathāt) - from the chariot; अवप्लुत्य (avaplutya) - leaping down; सूतपुत्रः (sūtaputraḥ) - the son of the charioteer; असिचर्मभृत् (asicarmabhṛt) - bearing sword and shield; विकर्णरथम् (vikarṇaratham) - Vikarna's chariot; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having ascended; मोक्षाय (mokṣāya) - for escape; अश्वान् (aśvān) - the horses; अचोदयत् (acodayat) - he urged;]
(Then, leaping down from the chariot, the son of the charioteer, bearing sword and shield, after having ascended Vikarna's chariot, for escape, he urged the horses.)
