जनमेजय उवाच॥
Janamejaya said;
शत्रुभिर्जितबद्धस्य पाण्डवैश्च महात्मभिः। मोक्षितस्य युधा पश्चान्मानस्थस्य दुरात्मनः ॥०३-२३६-१॥
Of the wicked one who, having first been conquered and bound by his enemies and by the great-souled Pāṇḍavas, and then released after the battle, became arrogant. (03-236-1)
कत्थनस्यावलिप्तस्य गर्वितस्य च नित्यशः। सदा च पौरुषौदार्यैः पाण्डवानवमन्यतः ॥०३-२३६-२॥
He, being ever boastful, arrogant, and proud, always, and through his manliness and generosity, used to despise the Pāṇḍavas. (03-236-2)
दुर्योधनस्य पापस्य नित्याहङ्कारवादिनः। प्रवेशो हास्तिनपुरे दुष्करः प्रतिभाति मे ॥०३-२३६-३॥
Entry into Hastinapura, belonging to sinful Duryodhana who is always arrogant, appears difficult to me. (03-236-3)
तस्य लज्जान्वितस्यैव शोकव्याकुलचेतसः। प्रवेशं विस्तरेण त्वं वैशम्पायन कीर्तय ॥०३-२३६-४॥
Vaiśampāyana, relate in detail the entrance of him who was indeed filled with shame and whose mind was agitated by grief. (03-236-4)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
धर्मराजनिसृष्टस्तु धार्तराष्ट्रः सुयोधनः। लज्जयाधोमुखः सीदन्नुपासर्पत्सुदुःखितः ॥०३-२३६-५॥
But Suyodhana, the son of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, sent by Dharmarāja, approached with his face lowered in shame, deeply distressed and dejected. (03-236-5)
स्वपुरं प्रययौ राजा चतुरङ्गबलानुगः। शोकोपहतया बुद्ध्या चिन्तयानः पराभवम् ॥०३-२३६-६॥
The king, accompanied by his fourfold army, returned to his own city, his mind overwhelmed by grief, reflecting on his defeat. (03-236-6)
विमुच्य पथि यानानि देशे सुयवसोदके। संनिविष्टः शुभे रम्ये भूमिभागे यथेप्सितम् ॥ हस्त्यश्वरथपादातं यथास्थानं न्यवेशयत् ॥०३-२३६-७॥
Having unyoked the vehicles on the road in a place with good grass and water, and after settling as desired in a pleasant, auspicious spot of land, he had the elephants, horses, chariots, and infantry positioned in their proper places. (03-236-7)
अथोपविष्टं राजानं पर्यङ्के ज्वलनप्रभे। उपप्लुतं यथा सोमं राहुणा रात्रिसङ्क्षये ॥ उपगम्याब्रवीत्कर्णो दुर्योधनमिदं तदा ॥०३-२३६-८॥
Then Karṇa approached king Duryodhana—who was seated on a couch glowing like fire, overshadowed like the moon by Rāhu at the end of the night—and spoke these words to him. (03-236-8)
दिष्ट्या जीवसि गान्धारे दिष्ट्या नः सङ्गमः पुनः। दिष्ट्या त्वया जिताश्चैव गन्धर्वाः कामरूपिणः ॥०३-२३६-९॥
It is by fortune that you are alive, O Gandhari; by fortune we have met again; by fortune, you have indeed conquered the Gandharvas who can assume any form. (3-236-9)
दिष्ट्या समग्रान्पश्यामि भ्रातॄंस्ते कुरुनन्दन। विजिगीषून्रणान्मुक्तान्निर्जितारीन्महारथान् ॥०३-२३६-१०॥
By good fortune, O son of the Kuru lineage, I see all your brothers—great warriors, eager for victory, freed from battle, having defeated their enemies. (03-236-10)
अहं त्वभिद्रुतः सर्वैर्गन्धर्वैः पश्यतस्तव। नाशक्नुवं स्थापयितुं दीर्यमाणां स्ववाहिनीम् ॥०३-२३६-११॥
But I, attacked by all the Gandharvas while you watched, was not able to stop my own army, which was being routed. (03-236-11)
शरक्षताङ्गश्च भृशं व्यपयातोऽभिपीडितः। इदं त्वत्यद्भुतं मन्ये यद्युष्मानिह भारत ॥०३-२३६-१२॥
O Bhārata, I consider it most wonderful that, although your limbs are wounded by arrows and you are much afflicted and have greatly withdrawn, you are here. (03-236-12)
अरिष्टानक्षतांश्चापि सदारधनवाहनान्। विमुक्तान्सम्प्रपश्यामि तस्माद्युद्धादमानुषात् ॥०३-२३६-१३॥
I perceive unharmed and uninjured chariots and vehicles being constantly released; therefore, this battle is beyond human (powers). (03-236-13)
नैतस्य कर्ता लोकेऽस्मिन्पुमान्विद्येत भारत। यत्कृतं ते महाराज सह भ्रातृभिराहवे ॥०३-२३६-१४॥
O Bhārata, no man in this world could be found as the doer of what you, O great king, together with your brothers, have done in the battle. (03-236-14)
एवमुक्तस्तु कर्णेन राजा दुर्योधनस्तदा। उवाचावाक्षिरा राजन्बाष्पगद्गदया गिरा ॥०३-२३६-१५॥
Thus, when addressed by Karṇa, King Duryodhana then, his head bowed and voice choked with tears, spoke, O king. (03-236-15)
