कोटिकाश्य उवाच॥
Koṭikāśya said.
का त्वं कदम्बस्य विनम्य शाखा; मेकाश्रमे तिष्ठसि शोभमाना। देदीप्यमानाग्निशिखेव नक्तं; दोधूयमाना पवनेन सुभ्रूः ॥०३-२४९-१॥
Who are you, O beautiful-browed lady, bending the branch of the kadamba tree? Standing in a solitary hermitage, you shine forth like a blazing flame of fire at night, swaying in the wind. (03-249-1)
अतीव रूपेण समन्विता त्वं; न चाप्यरण्येषु बिभेषि किं नु। देवी नु यक्षी यदि दानवी वा; वराप्सरा दैत्यवराङ्गना वा ॥०३-२४९-२॥
You are endowed with extraordinary beauty; even in the forests, you do not seem to fear, why indeed? Are you a goddess, or a yakṣī, or perhaps a demoness? Or are you an excellent apsaras or a maiden among the daityas? (03-249-2)
वपुष्मती वोरगराजकन्या; वनेचरी वा क्षणदाचरस्त्री। यद्येव राज्ञो वरुणस्य पत्नी; यमस्य सोमस्य धनेश्वरस्य ॥०३-२४९-३॥
A beautiful woman, the daughter of the king of serpents; or a roamer of the forest, or a woman of the night; or even if the wife of King Varuṇa, or of Yama, Soma, or the lord of wealth (Kubera). (03-249-3)
धातुर्विधातुः सवितुर्विभोर्वा; शक्रस्य वा त्वं सदनात्प्रपन्ना। न ह्येव नः पृच्छसि ये वयं स्म; न चापि जानीम तवेह नाथम् ॥०३-२४९-४॥
You may have arrived from the abode of the Creator, the Disposer, Savitṛ, the Supreme Lord, or even from Śakra (Indra); yet, you do not in fact ask us who we are, nor do we even know your master here. (03-249-4)
वयं हि मानं तव वर्धयन्तः; पृच्छाम भद्रे प्रभवं प्रभुं च। आचक्ष्व बन्धूंश्च पतिं कुलं च; तत्त्वेन यच्चेह करोषि कार्यम् ॥०३-२४९-५॥
We, indeed, wishing to increase your honor, ask you, O auspicious lady, about your origin and your lord. Tell us truly your relations, your husband, your family, and also what exactly is the action you are performing here. (03-249-5)
अहं तु राज्ञः सुरथस्य पुत्रो; यं कोटिकाश्येति विदुर्मनुष्याः। असौ तु यस्तिष्ठति काञ्चनाङ्गे; रथे हुतोऽग्निश्चयने यथैव ॥ त्रिगर्तराजः कमलायताक्षि; क्षेमङ्करो नाम स एष वीरः ॥०३-२४९-६॥
I am the son of King Suratha, known among men as Koṭikāśya. That man standing in the golden chariot, like a fire on the sacrificial altar, O lotus-eyed one, is the King of Trigarta, the heroic Kṣemaṅkara. (03-249-6)
अस्मात्परस्त्वेष महाधनुष्मा; न्पुत्रः कुणिन्दाधिपतेर्वरिष्ठः। निरीक्षते त्वां विपुलायतांसः; सुविस्मितः पर्वतवासनित्यः ॥०३-२४९-७॥
Beyond this person, this great archer—the foremost son of the king of the Kuṇindas—broad-shouldered, ever dwelling in the mountains, gazes at you in great wonder. (03-249-7)
असौ तु यः पुष्करिणीसमीपे; श्यामो युवा तिष्ठति दर्शनीयः। इक्ष्वाकुराज्ञः सुबलस्य पुत्रः; स एष हन्ता द्विषतां सुगात्रि ॥०३-२४९-८॥
But that one, the handsome, dark-complexioned young man standing near the lotus-pond, is the son of Subala of Ikṣvāku king; he is the slayer of enemies, O one with beautiful limbs. (03-249-8)
यस्यानुयात्रं ध्वजिनः प्रयान्ति; सौवीरका द्वादश राजपुत्राः। शोणाश्वयुक्तेषु रथेषु सर्वे; मखेषु दीप्ता इव हव्यवाहाः ॥०३-२४९-९॥
The standard-bearers go in the procession of whom; twelve princes of the Sauvira race, all in chariots yoked with red horses, blazing in sacrifices like fires. (03-249-9)
अङ्गारकः कुञ्जरगुप्तकश्च; शत्रुञ्जयः सञ्जयसुप्रवृद्धौ। प्रभङ्करोऽथ भ्रमरो रविश्च; शूरः प्रतापः कुहरश्च नाम ॥०३-२४९-१०॥
The names are: Aṅgāraka, Kuñjaraguptaka, Śatruñjaya, Sañjaya, Supravṛddha, Prabhaṅkara, Bhramara, Ravi, Śūra, Pratāpa, and Kuhara. (03-249-10)
यं षट्सहस्रा रथिनोऽनुयान्ति; नागा हयाश्चैव पदातिनश्च। जयद्रथो नाम यदि श्रुतस्ते; सौवीरराजः सुभगे स एषः ॥०३-२४९-११॥
O fortunate one, if you have heard of Jayadratha, the king of the Sauvīras—he is this man, whom six thousand charioteers, elephants, horses, and foot soldiers follow. (03-249-11)
तस्यापरे भ्रातरोऽदीनसत्त्वा; बलाहकानीकविदारणाध्याः। सौवीरवीराः प्रवरा युवानो; राजानमेते बलिनोऽनुयान्ति ॥०३-२४९-१२॥
Other brothers of his, undaunted in spirit, excelling in breaking enemy ranks, the eminent young Sauvīra heroes—these powerful ones follow the king. (3-249-12)
एतैः सहायैरुपयाति राजा; मरुद्गणैरिन्द्र इवाभिगुप्तः। अजानतां ख्यापय नः सुकेशि; कस्यासि भार्या दुहिता च कस्य ॥०३-२४९-१३॥
With these helpers the king approaches, protected like Indra by the troops of Maruts. Tell us, O Sukeśi, whose wife you are, and whose daughter. (03-249-13)
