वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
अथाब्रवीद्द्रौपदी राजपुत्री; पृष्टा शिबीनां प्रवरेण तेन। अवेक्ष्य मन्दं प्रविमुच्य शाखां; सङ्गृह्णती कौशिकमुत्तरीयम् ॥०३-२५०-१॥
Then Draupadī, the princess, replied—having been questioned by the chief of the Śibis. She gently looked, released the branch, and took up the kauśika upper garment. (03-250-1)
बुद्ध्याभिजानामि नरेन्द्रपुत्र; न मादृशी त्वामभिभाष्टुमर्हा। न त्वेह वक्तास्ति तवेह वाक्य; मन्यो नरो वाप्यथ वापि नारी ॥०३-२५०-२॥
O prince, I recognize you with my intellect; someone like me is not worthy to address you. Nor, I think, is there anyone here, whether man or woman, who is fit to reply to your words. (03-250-2)
एका ह्यहं सम्प्रति तेन वाचं; ददानि वै भद्र निबोध चेदम्। अहं ह्यरण्ये कथमेकमेका; त्वामालपेयं निरता स्वधर्मे ॥०३-२५०-३॥
I, alone now, indeed give you these words; truly, O auspicious one, understand this. How could I, alone in the forest and absorbed in my own dharma, speak to you alone? (03-250-3)
जानामि च त्वां सुरथस्य पुत्रं; यं कोटिकाश्येति विदुर्मनुष्याः। तस्मादहं शैब्य तथैव तुभ्य; माख्यामि बन्धून्प्रति तन्निबोध ॥०३-२५०-४॥
I know you as the son of Suratha, whom men also know as Koṭikāśya. Therefore, I, Shaibya, will likewise tell you about the relatives; understand that. (03-250-4)
अपत्यमस्मि द्रुपदस्य राज्ञः; कृष्णेति मां शैब्य विदुर्मनुष्याः। साहं वृणे पञ्च जनान्पतित्वे; ये खाण्डवप्रस्थगताः श्रुतास्ते ॥०३-२५०-५॥
I am the daughter of King Drupada, and people—descendants of Śibi—know me as 'Kṛṣṇā'. Therefore, I choose as husbands those five men who are known to have gone to Khāṇḍavaprastha. (03-250-5)
युधिष्ठिरो भीमसेनार्जुनौ च; माद्र्याश्च पुत्रौ पुरुषप्रवीरौ। ते मां निवेश्येह दिशश्चतस्रो; विभज्य पार्था मृगयां प्रयाताः ॥०३-२५०-६॥
Yudhishthira, Bhimasena, Arjuna, and the two sons of Madri, all foremost among men—having settled me here and dividing the four directions among themselves, the Pandavas have gone hunting. (03-250-6)
प्राचीं राजा दक्षिणां भीमसेनो; जयः प्रतीचीं यमजावुदीचीम्। मन्ये तु तेषां रथसत्तमानां; कालोऽभितः प्राप्त इहोपयातुम् ॥०३-२५०-७॥
The king faces east; Bhīmasena to the south; Jaya to the west; the sons of Yama to the north. Yet, I think that for these foremost chariot-warriors, death itself has now come upon them from all directions. (03-250-7)
संमानिता यास्यथ तैर्यथेष्टं; विमुच्य वाहानवगाहयध्वम्। प्रियातिथिर्धर्मसुतो महात्मा; प्रीतो भविष्यत्यभिवीक्ष्य युष्मान् ॥०३-२५०-८॥
After you have been honored, you may go with them as you wish; have the vehicles let loose and make them enter the water. The dear guest, the great-souled son of Dharma, will be pleased when he sees you all. (03-250-8)
एतावदुक्त्वा द्रुपदात्मजा सा; शैब्यात्मजं चन्द्रमुखी प्रतीता। विवेश तां पर्णकुटीं प्रशस्तां; सञ्चिन्त्य तेषामतिथिस्वधर्मम् ॥०३-२५०-९॥
After saying this, Drupada's daughter, who was moon-faced and reassured by the son of Śaibya, entered the excellent leaf-hut, thinking of their duty toward guests. (03-250-9)
