अथाब्रवीद्द्रौपदी राजपुत्री; पृष्टा शिबीनां प्रवरेण तेन। अवेक्ष्य मन्दं प्रविमुच्य शाखां; सङ्गृह्णती कौशिकमुत्तरीयम् ॥०३-२५०-१॥
athābravīd draupadī rājaputrī; pṛṣṭā śibīnāṃ pravareṇa tena। avekṣya mandaṃ pravimucya śākhām; saṅgṛhṇatī kauśikam uttarīyam ॥03-250-1॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; द्रौपदी (draupadī) - Draupadī; राजपुत्री (rājaputrī) - princess; पृष्टा (pṛṣṭā) - having been asked; शिबीनां (śibīnāṃ) - of the Śibi people; प्रवरेण (pravareṇa) - by the chief; तेन (tena) - by him; अवेक्ष्य (avekṣya) - having looked; मन्दम् (mandam) - gently; प्रविमुच्य (pravimucya) - having loosened; शाखाम् (śākhām) - branch; सङ्गृह्णती (saṅgṛhṇatī) - taking; कौशिकम् (kauśikam) - of Kausika (sage or heron, here a cloth made from kusa grass); उत्तरीयम् (uttarīyam) - upper garment;]
(Then said Draupadī, the princess; having been asked by the chief of the Śibis, by him. Having looked gently, having loosened the branch, taking up the kauśika upper garment.)
Then Draupadī, the princess, replied—having been questioned by the chief of the Śibis. She gently looked, released the branch, and took up the kauśika upper garment. (03-250-1)
बुद्ध्याभिजानामि नरेन्द्रपुत्र; न मादृशी त्वामभिभाष्टुमर्हा। न त्वेह वक्तास्ति तवेह वाक्य; मन्यो नरो वाप्यथ वापि नारी ॥०३-२५०-२॥
buddhyābhijānāmi narendraputra; na mādṛśī tvām abhibhāṣṭum arhā। na tveha vaktāsti taveha vākya; manyo naro vāpy atha vāpi nārī॥03-250-2॥
[बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) (buddhyā) - by intellect; अभिजानामि (abhijānāmi) (abhijānāmi) - I recognize; नरेन्द्रपुत्र (narendraputra) (narendraputra) - O prince; न (na) (na) - not; मादृशी (mādṛśī) (mādṛśī) - like me; त्वाम् (tvām) (tvām) - you; अभिभाष्टुम् (abhibhāṣṭum) (abhibhāṣṭum) - to address; अर्हा (arhā) (arhā) - is worthy; न (na) (na) - not; त्व (tva) (tve) - for you; इह (iha) (iha) - here; वक्ता (vaktā) (vaktā) - speaker; अस्ति (asti) (asti) - exists; तव (tava) (tava) - your; इह (iha) (iha) - here; वाक्य (vākya) (vākya) - speech; मन्यः (manyaḥ) (manyaḥ) - I think; नरः (naraḥ) (naraḥ) - man; वा (vā) (vā) - or; अपि (api) (api) - even; अथ (atha) (atha) - or else; वा (vā) (vā) - or; अपि (api) (api) - even; नारी (nārī) (nārī) - woman;]
(By intellect I recognize you, O prince; not one like me is worthy to address you. Nor here is there a speaker for your speech here, I think—whether a man or perhaps even a woman.)
O prince, I recognize you with my intellect; someone like me is not worthy to address you. Nor, I think, is there anyone here, whether man or woman, who is fit to reply to your words. (03-250-2)
एका ह्यहं सम्प्रति तेन वाचं; ददानि वै भद्र निबोध चेदम्। अहं ह्यरण्ये कथमेकमेका; त्वामालपेयं निरता स्वधर्मे ॥०३-२५०-३॥
ekā hya haṃ samprati tena vācaṃ; dadāni vai bhadra nibodha cedam. ahaṃ hy araṇye katham ekam ekā; tvām ālapeyaṃ niratā svadharme ॥03-250-3॥
[एका (ekā) - alone (feminine); हि (hi) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; सम्प्रति (samprati) - now; तेन (tena) - with that; by him; वाचम् (vācam) - speech; word; ददानि (dadāni) - I give; वै (vai) - truly; भद्र (bhadra) - O auspicious one; निबोध (nibodha) - understand; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; अहम् (aham) - I; हि (hi) - indeed; अरण्ये (araṇye) - in the forest; कथम् (katham) - how; एकम् (ekam) - alone (neuter/masculine singular); एका (ekā) - alone (feminine singular); त्वाम् (tvām) - you; आलपेयं (ālapeyaṃ) - could I speak (to); निरता (niratā) - absorbed; स्वधर्मे (svadharme) - in own dharma;]
(Alone indeed I now with that speech, I give truly, O auspicious one, understand this; I indeed in the forest, how alone alone could I speak to you, absorbed in own dharma.)
I, alone now, indeed give you these words; truly, O auspicious one, understand this. How could I, alone in the forest and absorbed in my own dharma, speak to you alone? (03-250-3)
जानामि च त्वां सुरथस्य पुत्रं; यं कोटिकाश्येति विदुर्मनुष्याः। तस्मादहं शैब्य तथैव तुभ्य; माख्यामि बन्धून्प्रति तन्निबोध ॥०३-२५०-४॥
jānāmi ca tvāṃ surathasya putraṃ; yaṃ koṭikāśyeti vidurmanuṣyāḥ. tasmādahaṃ śaibya tathaiva tubhya; mākhyāmi bandhūnprati tannibodha ॥03-250-4॥
[जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; च (ca) - and; त्वां (tvāṃ) - you; सुरथस्य (surathasya) - of Suratha; पुत्रं (putraṃ) - son; यं (yaṃ) - whom; कोटिकाश्येति (koṭikāśyeti) - as Koṭikāśya; विदुर्मनुष्याः (vidurmanuṣyāḥ) - men know; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; शैब्य (śaibya) - Shaibya; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; तुभ्य (tubhya) - to you; माख्यामि (mākhyāmi) - I will declare; बन्धून् (bandhūn) - relatives; प्रति (prati) - regarding; तत् (tat) - that; निबोध (nibodha) - understand;]
(I know you, the son of Suratha, and men know whom as Koṭikāśya. Therefore I, Shaibya, in the same way, to you, will declare regarding relatives; that, understand.)
I know you as the son of Suratha, whom men also know as Koṭikāśya. Therefore, I, Shaibya, will likewise tell you about the relatives; understand that. (03-250-4)
अपत्यमस्मि द्रुपदस्य राज्ञः; कृष्णेति मां शैब्य विदुर्मनुष्याः। साहं वृणे पञ्च जनान्पतित्वे; ये खाण्डवप्रस्थगताः श्रुतास्ते ॥०३-२५०-५॥
apatyam asmi drupadasya rājñaḥ; kṛṣṇeti māṃ śaibya vidur manuṣyāḥ. sā ahaṃ vṛṇe pañca janān patitve; ye khāṇḍavaprastha-gatāḥ śrutāḥ te ॥03-250-5॥
[अपत्यम् (apatyam) - offspring; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; द्रुपदस्य (drupadasya) - of Drupada; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; कृष्णेति (kṛṣṇeti) - Kṛṣṇā thus; माम् (mām) - me; शैब्य (śaibya) - descendants of Śibi; विदुः (viduḥ) - know; मनुष्याः (manuṣyāḥ) - people; सा (sā) - she; अहम् (aham) - I; वृणे (vṛṇe) - choose; पञ्च (pañca) - five; जनान् (janān) - men; पतित्वे (patitve) - as husbands; ये (ye) - who; खाण्डवप्रस्थगताः (khāṇḍavaprastha-gatāḥ) - gone to Khāṇḍavaprastha; श्रुताः (śrutāḥ) - heard; ते (te) - they;]
(I am the offspring of King Drupada; people, descendants of Śibi, know me as 'Kṛṣṇā'. So I choose the five men as husbands, who are heard to have gone to Khāṇḍavaprastha.)
I am the daughter of King Drupada, and people—descendants of Śibi—know me as 'Kṛṣṇā'. Therefore, I choose as husbands those five men who are known to have gone to Khāṇḍavaprastha. (03-250-5)
युधिष्ठिरो भीमसेनार्जुनौ च; माद्र्याश्च पुत्रौ पुरुषप्रवीरौ। ते मां निवेश्येह दिशश्चतस्रो; विभज्य पार्था मृगयां प्रयाताः ॥०३-२५०-६॥
yudhiṣṭhiro bhīmasenārjunau ca; mādryāś ca putrau puruṣapravīrau। te māṃ niveśyeha diśaś catasro; vibhajya pārthā mṛgayāṃ prayātāḥ ॥03-250-6॥
[युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; भीमसेन (bhīmasena) - Bhimasena; अर्जुनौ (arjunau) - and Arjuna (dual); च (ca) - and; माद्र्याः (mādryāḥ) - of Madri; च (ca) - and; पुत्रौ (putrau) - two sons; पुरुषप्रवीरौ (puruṣa-pravīrau) - foremost among men (dual); ते (te) - they; माम् (mām) - me; निवेश्य (niveśya) - having left (settled); इह (iha) - here; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; चतस्रः (catasraḥ) - four; विभज्य (vibhajya) - dividing; पार्थाः (pārthāḥ) - the sons of Pritha (Pandavas); मृगयाम् (mṛgayām) - for the chase (hunting); प्रयाताः (prayātāḥ) - have gone;]
(Yudhishthira, Bhimasena, and Arjuna (dual); and Madri's (two) sons, foremost among men— they, having left me here and dividing the four directions, the Pandavas have gone for the hunt.)
Yudhishthira, Bhimasena, Arjuna, and the two sons of Madri, all foremost among men—having settled me here and dividing the four directions among themselves, the Pandavas have gone hunting. (03-250-6)
प्राचीं राजा दक्षिणां भीमसेनो; जयः प्रतीचीं यमजावुदीचीम्। मन्ये तु तेषां रथसत्तमानां; कालोऽभितः प्राप्त इहोपयातुम् ॥०३-२५०-७॥
prācīṃ rājā dakṣiṇāṃ bhīmaseno; jayaḥ pratīcīṃ yamajāvudīcīm। manye tu teṣāṃ rathasattamānāṃ; kālo'bhitaḥ prāpta ihopayātum ॥03-250-7॥
[प्राचीं (prācīṃ) (prācīṃ) - to the east; राजा (rājā) (rājā) - the king; दक्षिणां (dakṣiṇāṃ) (dakṣiṇāṃ) - to the south; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; जयः (jayaḥ) (jayaḥ) - Jaya; प्रतीचीं (pratīcīṃ) (pratīcīṃ) - to the west; यमजौ (yamajau) (yamajau) - the two sons of Yama; उदीचीम् (udīcīm) (udīcīm) - to the north; मन्ये (manye) (manye) - I think; तु (tu) (tu) - but; तेषां (teṣāṃ) (teṣāṃ) - of those; रथसत्तमानाम् (rathasattamānām) (rathasattamānām) - of the foremost of chariot-warriors; कालः (kālaḥ) (kālaḥ) - time (death); अभितः (abhitaḥ) (abhitaḥ) - from all sides; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) (prāptaḥ) - has approached; इह (iha) (iha) - here; उपयातुम् (upayātum) (upayātum) - to come close;]
(To the east, the king; to the south, Bhīmasena; Jaya to the west, the two sons of Yama to the north. I think, however, for those foremost chariot-warriors, time (death) from all sides has approached here to come.)
The king faces east; Bhīmasena to the south; Jaya to the west; the sons of Yama to the north. Yet, I think that for these foremost chariot-warriors, death itself has now come upon them from all directions. (03-250-7)
संमानिता यास्यथ तैर्यथेष्टं; विमुच्य वाहानवगाहयध्वम्। प्रियातिथिर्धर्मसुतो महात्मा; प्रीतो भविष्यत्यभिवीक्ष्य युष्मान् ॥०३-२५०-८॥
saṁmānitā yāsyatha tair yatheṣṭam; vimucya vāhān avagāhayadhvam. priyātithiḥ dharmasuto mahātmā; prīto bhaviṣyaty abhivīkṣya yuṣmān ॥03-250-8॥
[संमानिता (saṁmānitāḥ) - having been honored; यास्यथ (yāsyatha) - you will go; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; यथेष्टं (yatheṣṭam) - as desired; विमुच्य (vimucya) - having released; वाहान् (vāhān) - vehicles; अवगाहयध्वम् (avagāhayadhvam) - make enter (into water); प्रियातिथिः (priyātithiḥ) - dear guest; धर्मसुतः (dharmasutaḥ) - son of Dharma; महात्मा (mahātmā) - great-souled one; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - he will be; अभिवीक्ष्य (abhivīkṣya) - having looked upon; युष्मान् (yuṣmān) - you all;]
(Having been honored, you will go by them as desired; having released the vehicles, make them enter (the water). The dear guest, the great-souled son of Dharma, will be pleased having looked upon you all. (03-250-8))
After you have been honored, you may go with them as you wish; have the vehicles let loose and make them enter the water. The dear guest, the great-souled son of Dharma, will be pleased when he sees you all. (03-250-8)
एतावदुक्त्वा द्रुपदात्मजा सा; शैब्यात्मजं चन्द्रमुखी प्रतीता। विवेश तां पर्णकुटीं प्रशस्तां; सञ्चिन्त्य तेषामतिथिस्वधर्मम् ॥०३-२५०-९॥
etāvad uktvā drupadātmajā sā; śaibyātmajaṃ candramukhī pratītā. viveśa tāṃ parṇakuṭīṃ praśastāṃ; sañcintya teṣām atithi-svadharmam ॥03-250-9॥
[एतावदुक्त्वा (etāvad uktvā) - having spoken so much; द्रुपदात्मजा (drupadātmajā) - the daughter of Drupada; सा (sā) - she; शैब्यात्मजं (śaibyātmajam) - the son of Śaibya; चन्द्रमुखी (candramukhī) - moon-faced; प्रतीता (pratītā) - having been reassured; विवेश (viveśa) - entered; तां (tāṃ) - that; पर्णकुटीं (parṇakuṭīm) - leaf-hut; प्रशस्तां (praśastām) - excellent; सञ्चिन्त्य (sañcintya) - having considered; तेषाम् (teṣām) - their; अतिथिस्वधर्मम् (atithi-svadharmam) - duty toward guests;]
(Having spoken so much, the daughter of Drupada, she, having been reassured by the son of Śaibya, moon-faced, entered that excellent leaf-hut, having considered their duty toward guests.)
After saying this, Drupada's daughter, who was moon-faced and reassured by the son of Śaibya, entered the excellent leaf-hut, thinking of their duty toward guests. (03-250-9)
