वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said;
सरोषरागोपहतेन वल्गुना; सरागनेत्रेण नतोन्नतभ्रुवा। मुखेन विस्फूर्य सुवीरराष्ट्रपं; ततोऽब्रवीत्तं द्रुपदात्मजा पुनः ॥०३-२५२-१॥
Affected by charming appearance filled with both anger and passion, with passionate eyes and expressive eyebrows, having presented her face to the noble king, then the daughter of Drupada spoke again to him. (03-252-1)
यशस्विनस्तीक्ष्णविषान्महारथा; नधिक्षिपन्मूढ न लज्जसे कथम्। महेन्द्रकल्पान्निरतान्स्वकर्मसु; स्थितान्समूहेष्वपि यक्षरक्षसाम् ॥०३-२५२-२॥
O fool, how is it that you do not feel ashamed, insulting these renowned, deadly, great chariot-warriors—who are equal to Indra, devoted to their duties, and stand even amidst assemblies of yakṣas and rākṣasas? (03-252-2)
न किञ्चिदीड्यं प्रवदन्ति पापं; वनेचरं वा गृहमेधिनं वा। तपस्विनं सम्परिपूर्णविद्यं; भषन्ति हैवं श्वनराः सुवीर ॥०३-२५२-३॥
The dog-like men never speak ill of anything praiseworthy, whether a forest-dweller, a householder, or an ascetic filled with all knowledge; they bark in this way, O noble one. (03-252-3)
अहं तु मन्ये तव नास्ति कश्चि; देतादृशे क्षत्रियसंनिवेशे। यस्त्वाद्य पातालमुखे पतन्तं; पाणौ गृहीत्वा प्रतिसंहरेत ॥०३-२५२-४॥
But I think there is no one for you, even among those like deities in the warrior assembly, who today, as you fall at the mouth of the netherworld, could grasp you by the hand and draw you back. (03-252-4)
नागं प्रभिन्नं गिरिकूटकल्प; मुपत्यकां हैमवतीं चरन्तम्। दण्डीव यूथादपसेधसे त्वं; यो जेतुमाशंससि धर्मराजम् ॥०३-२५२-५॥
You, who aspire to conquer Dharmarāja, are like someone who wishes to drive away, with a staff, a wild elephant wandering in a Himalayan valley, resembling a mountain peak, from its herd. (03-252-5)
बाल्यात्प्रसुप्तस्य महाबलस्य; सिंहस्य पक्ष्माणि मुखाल्लुनासि। पदा समाहत्य पलायमानः; क्रुद्धं यदा द्रक्ष्यसि भीमसेनम् ॥०३-२५२-६॥
You pluck the eyelashes from the mouth of a sleeping lion of great strength during your childhood, but when you encounter Bhimasena angry, after striking with your foot while fleeing, you will understand (the outcome). (03-252-6)
महाबलं घोरतरं प्रवृद्धं; जातं हरिं पर्वतकन्दरेषु। प्रसुप्तमुग्रं प्रपदेन हंसि; यः क्रुद्धमासेत्स्यसि जिष्णुमुग्रम् ॥०३-२५२-७॥
The lion of great strength, more terrible and fully grown, born in the mountain caves — if you strike the terrible one sleeping with your foot, you will meet the victorious and terrible one when he is angry. (03-252-7)
कृष्णोरगौ तीक्ष्णविषौ द्विजिह्वौ; मत्तः पदाक्रामसि पुच्छदेशे। यः पाण्डवाभ्यां पुरुषोत्तमाभ्यां; जघन्यजाभ्यां प्रयुयुत्ससे त्वम् ॥०३-२५२-८॥
Intoxicated, you step with your feet on the tail region of black serpents possessing sharp poison and two tongues. You wish to contend with the two Pāṇḍavas, who are the best among men but whom you call ignoble. (03-252-8)
यथा च वेणुः कदली नलो वा; फलन्त्यभावाय न भूतयेऽऽत्मनः। तथैव मां तैः परिरक्ष्यमाणा; मादास्यसे कर्कटकीव गर्भम् ॥०३-२५२-९॥
Just as the bamboo, plantain, or reed produce fruit that leads to their own destruction and not to their own good, in the same way, if you protect me by them, do not let me, like a crab, give birth to my own destroyer. (3-252-9)
जयद्रथ उवाच॥
Jayadratha said.
जानामि कृष्णे विदितं ममैत; द्यथाविधास्ते नरदेवपुत्राः। न त्वेवमेतेन विभीषणेन; शक्या वयं त्रासयितुं त्वयाद्य ॥०३-२५२-१०॥
I know this, O Kṛṣṇa, it is known to me; as is appropriate, those are the sons of men. But by this Vibhīṣaṇa, we cannot be frightened by you today. (03-252-10)
वयं पुनः सप्तदशेषु कृष्णे; कुलेषु सर्वेऽनवमेषु जाताः। षड्भ्यो गुणेभ्योऽभ्यधिका विहीना; न्मन्यामहे द्रौपदि पाण्डुपुत्रान् ॥०३-२५२-११॥
O Draupadī, we, all born among the seventeen noble families without any inferiority, do not consider the sons of Pāṇḍu to be superior to us in any of the six qualities. (03-252-11)
सा क्षिप्रमातिष्ठ गजं रथं वा; न वाक्यमात्रेण वयं हि शक्याः। आशंस वा त्वं कृपणं वदन्ती; सौवीरराजस्य पुनः प्रसादम् ॥०३-२५२-१२॥
Either quickly mount the elephant or the chariot; for we cannot accomplish this by mere words. Or, you—speaking miserably—may hope again for the favor of the king of Sauvīra. (03-252-12)
द्रौपद्युवाच॥
Draupadī said;
महाबला किं त्विह दुर्बलेव; सौवीरराजस्य मताहमस्मि। याहं प्रमाथादिह सम्प्रतीता; सौवीरराजं कृपणं वदेयम् ॥०३-२५२-१३॥
O mighty-armed one, why do you seem weak here? I am regarded as belonging to the king of Sauvīra. I, who found refuge here from oppression, should call the king of Sauvīra pitiable. (03-252-13)
यस्या हि कृष्णौ पदवीं चरेतां; समास्थितावेकरथे सहायौ। इन्द्रोऽपि तां नापहरेत्कथं चि; न्मनुष्यमात्रः कृपणः कुतोऽन्यः ॥०३-२५२-१४॥
Indeed, the path of her whose companions are the two Kṛṣṇas—mounting the same chariot as helpers—could not be seized even by Indra; how then could a mere wretched human or anyone else do so? (03-252-14)
यदा किरीटी परवीरघाती; निघ्नन्रथस्थो द्विषतां मनांसि। मदन्तरे त्वद्ध्वजिनीं प्रवेष्टा; कक्षं दहन्नग्निरिवोष्णगेषु ॥०३-२५२-१५॥
When the diademed warrior, destroyer of enemy heroes, slaying from his chariot the minds of foes, enters your army in my midst like fire burning the undergrowth among dry grasses. (03-252-15)
जनार्दनस्यानुगा वृष्णिवीरा; महेष्वासाः केकयाश्चापि सर्वे। एते हि सर्वे मम राजपुत्राः; प्रहृष्टरूपाः पदवीं चरेयुः ॥०३-२५२-१६॥
The followers of Janārdana, the Vṛṣṇi heroes, the great bowmen, and also all the Kekayas—these indeed are all my royal sons; with joyful countenances they might proceed on the path. (3-252-16)
मौर्वीविसृष्टाः स्तनयित्नुघोषा; गाण्डीवमुक्तास्त्वतिवेगवन्तः। हस्तं समाहत्य धनञ्जयस्य; भीमाः शब्दं घोरतरं नदन्ति ॥०३-२५२-१७॥
Arrows released from the bowstring, thundering like thunder, and shot from the Gāṇḍīva with great speed, after striking Dhanañjaya's hand, resound with even a more dreadful roar. (03-252-17)
गाण्डीवमुक्तांश्च महाशरौघा; न्पतङ्गसङ्घानिव शीघ्रवेगान्। सशङ्खघोषः सतलत्रघोषो; गाण्डीवधन्वा मुहुरुद्वमंश्च ॥ यदा शरानर्पयिता तवोरसि; तदा मनस्ते किमिवाभविष्यत् ॥०३-२५२-१८॥
The great torrents of arrows shot from the Gāṇḍīva, swift as swarms of moths, along with the resounding blasts of conches and twanging of bowstrings, were ceaselessly discharged by the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow. When he was aiming arrows at your chest, what must your mind have been like then? (03-252-18)
गदाहस्तं भीममभिद्रवन्तं; माद्रीपुत्रौ सम्पतन्तौ दिशश्च। अमर्षजं क्रोधविषं वमन्तौ; दृष्ट्वा चिरं तापमुपैष्यसेऽधम ॥०३-२५२-१९॥
When you see Bhima with mace in hand charging at you, and the two sons of Mādrī rushing forward from all directions, both spewing the poison of anger born from intolerance, O wicked one, you will long suffer agony. (03-252-19)
यथा चाहं नातिचरे कथं चि; त्पतीन्महार्हान्मनसापि जातु। तेनाद्य सत्येन वशीकृतं त्वां; द्रष्टास्मि पार्थैः परिकृष्यमाणम् ॥०३-२५२-२०॥
Just as I have never transgressed my greatly worthy husbands in any way, even in my mind at any time, therefore today by that truth may you be subdued—I shall see you being dragged around by the Parthas. (03-252-20)
न सम्भ्रमं गन्तुमहं हि शक्ष्ये; त्वया नृशंसेन विकृष्यमाणा। समागताहं हि कुरुप्रवीरैः; पुनर्वनं काम्यकमागता च ॥०३-२५२-२१॥
I truly cannot go in agitation, being dragged by you, cruel one; I had once come along with the noble Kuru heroes, and now again I have come to the Kamyaka forest. (03-252-21)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said;
सा ताननुप्रेक्ष्य विशालनेत्रा; जिघृक्षमाणानवभर्त्सयन्ती। प्रोवाच मा मा स्पृशतेति भीता; धौम्यं प्रचुक्रोश पुरोहितं सा ॥०३-२५२-२२॥
She, the large-eyed lady, saw them desiring to seize her and rebuked them; frightened, she said, "Do not, do not touch me," and cried out to Dhaumya, the priest. (03-252-22)
जग्राह तामुत्तरवस्त्रदेशे; जयद्रथस्तं समवाक्षिपत्सा। तया समाक्षिप्ततनुः स पापः; पपात शाखीव निकृत्तमूलः ॥०३-२५२-२३॥
He seized her by the upper garment, but Jayadratha threw him down. Struck down by her, that evil man fell like a branch whose root has been severed. (03-252-23)
प्रगृह्यमाणा तु महाजवेन; मुहुर्विनिःश्वस्य च राजपुत्री। सा कृष्यमाणा रथमारुरोह; धौम्यस्य पादावभिवाद्य कृष्णा ॥०३-२५२-२४॥
But Kṛṣṇā, the princess, as she was being seized and dragged rapidly, repeatedly sighing, ascended the chariot after saluting Dhaumya’s feet. (03-252-24)
धौम्य उवाच॥
Dhaumya said.
नेयं शक्या त्वया नेतुमविजित्य महारथान्। धर्मं क्षत्रस्य पौराणमवेक्षस्व जयद्रथ ॥०३-२५२-२५॥
O Jayadratha, you cannot take away this woman without first defeating the great chariot-warriors. Consider the ancient law of the kṣatriya race. (03-252-25)
क्षुद्रं कृत्वा फलं पापं प्राप्स्यसि त्वमसंशयम्। आसाद्य पाण्डवान्वीरान्धर्मराजपुरोगमान् ॥०३-२५२-२६॥
By committing a base act, you will surely reap an evil result, encountering the heroic Pāṇḍavas led by Dharmarāja. (03-252-26)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
इत्युक्त्वा ह्रियमाणां तां राजपुत्रीं यशस्विनीम्। अन्वगच्छत्तदा धौम्यः पदातिगणमध्यगः ॥०३-२५२-२७॥
Thus, having spoken, Dhaumya, amidst the group of foot-soldiers, followed the illustrious princess as she was being carried away. (03-252-27)
