सरोषरागोपहतेन वल्गुना; सरागनेत्रेण नतोन्नतभ्रुवा। मुखेन विस्फूर्य सुवीरराष्ट्रपं; ततोऽब्रवीत्तं द्रुपदात्मजा पुनः ॥०३-२५२-१॥
saroṣarāgopahatena valgūnā; sarāganetreṇa natonnatabhruvā| mukhena visphūrya suvīrarāṣṭrapaṃ; tato'bravīttaṃ drupadātmajā punaḥ॥03-252-1॥
[सरोष-राग-उपहतेन (saroṣa-rāga-upahatena) - with mingled anger and passion affected; वल्गुना (valgūnā) - with charming; सराग-नेत्रेण (sarāga-netreṇa) - with passion-flushed eyes; नत-उन्नत-भ्रुवा (nata-unnata-bhruvā) - with lowered and raised eyebrows; मुखेन (mukhena) - with the face; विस्फूर्य (visphūrya) - having expanded; सुवीर-राष्ट्रपं (suvīra-rāṣṭrapam) - to the excellent hero, the king; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; तं (taṃ) - to him; द्रुपदात्मजा (drupadātmajā) - the daughter of Drupada; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(With charming appearance, affected by mingled anger and passion; with passion-flushed eyes and with lowered and raised eyebrows; having expanded her face to the excellent hero, the king; then the daughter of Drupada again spoke to him.)
Affected by charming appearance filled with both anger and passion, with passionate eyes and expressive eyebrows, having presented her face to the noble king, then the daughter of Drupada spoke again to him. (03-252-1)
यशस्विनस्तीक्ष्णविषान्महारथा; नधिक्षिपन्मूढ न लज्जसे कथम्। महेन्द्रकल्पान्निरतान्स्वकर्मसु; स्थितान्समूहेष्वपि यक्षरक्षसाम् ॥०३-२५२-२॥
yaśasvinastīkṣṇaviṣānmahārathā; nadhikṣipan mūḍha na lajjase katham. mahendrakalpān niratān svakarmasu; sthitān samūheṣv api yakṣarakṣasām ॥03-252-2॥
[यशस्विनः (yaśasvinaḥ) - renowned ones; तीक्ष्णविषान् (tīkṣṇaviṣān) - of fierce poison; (i.e., deadly/ferocious nature; here: fierce) महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great chariot-warriors; न (na) - not; धिक्षिपन् (dhikṣipan) - insulting; (accusing, scorning; present participle) मूढ (mūḍha) - fool; न (na) - not; लज्जसे (lajjase) - feel ashamed; (2nd person, present, middle) कथम् (katham) - how; महेन्द्रकल्पान् (mahendrakalpān) - equal to Mahendra (Indra); निरतान् (niratān) - devoted; स्वकर्मसु (svakarmasu) - in their own duties; स्थितान् (sthitān) - standing; समूहेषु (samūheṣu) - among groups; अपि (api) - also; यक्षरक्षसाम् (yakṣarakṣasām) - of yakṣas and rākṣasas;]
(Renowned ones of fierce poison great chariot-warriors; not insulting fool not do you feel ashamed how. Equal to Mahendra devoted to their own duties; standing among groups also of yakṣas and rākṣasas.)
O fool, how is it that you do not feel ashamed, insulting these renowned, deadly, great chariot-warriors—who are equal to Indra, devoted to their duties, and stand even amidst assemblies of yakṣas and rākṣasas? (03-252-2)
न किञ्चिदीड्यं प्रवदन्ति पापं; वनेचरं वा गृहमेधिनं वा। तपस्विनं सम्परिपूर्णविद्यं; भषन्ति हैवं श्वनराः सुवीर ॥०३-२५२-३॥
na kiñcidiīḍyaṃ pravadanti pāpaṃ; vanecaraṃ vā gṛhamedhinaṃ vā. tapasvinaṃ samparipūrṇavidyaṃ; bhaṣanti haivaṃ śvanarāḥ suvīra ॥03-252-3॥
[न (na) - not; किञ्चिदीड्यं (kiñcidiīḍyaṃ) - anything praiseworthy; प्रवदन्ति (pravadanti) - they say; पापं (pāpaṃ) - evil; वनेचरं (vanecaraṃ) - forest-dweller; वा (vā) - or; गृहमेधिनं (gṛhamedhinaṃ) - householder; वा (vā) - or; तपस्विनं (tapasvinaṃ) - ascetic; सम्परिपूर्णविद्यं (samparipūrṇavidyaṃ) - entirely full of knowledge; भषन्ति (bhaṣanti) - they bark; हैवं (haivaṃ) - thus, just so; श्वनराः (śvanarāḥ) - dog-men; सुवीर (suvīra) - O noble one;]
(Not anything praiseworthy do they say evil; forest-dweller or householder or. Ascetic entirely full of knowledge; they bark thus, dog-men, O noble one (03-252-3))
The dog-like men never speak ill of anything praiseworthy, whether a forest-dweller, a householder, or an ascetic filled with all knowledge; they bark in this way, O noble one. (03-252-3)
अहं तु मन्ये तव नास्ति कश्चि; देतादृशे क्षत्रियसंनिवेशे। यस्त्वाद्य पातालमुखे पतन्तं; पाणौ गृहीत्वा प्रतिसंहरेत ॥०३-२५२-४॥
ahaṃ tu manye tava nāsti kaści; devatādṛśe kṣatriyasaṃniveśe. yas tv adya pātālamukhe patantaṃ; pāṇau gṛhītvā pratisaṃharet ॥03-252-4॥

(I but think for you there is not anyone like a deity among a warrior's assembly; who now today at the mouth of Pātāla, falling, having seized by the hand, could draw back.)
But I think there is no one for you, even among those like deities in the warrior assembly, who today, as you fall at the mouth of the netherworld, could grasp you by the hand and draw you back. (03-252-4)
नागं प्रभिन्नं गिरिकूटकल्प; मुपत्यकां हैमवतीं चरन्तम्। दण्डीव यूथादपसेधसे त्वं; यो जेतुमाशंससि धर्मराजम् ॥०३-२५२-५॥
nāgaṁ prabhinnaṁ girikūṭakalpa-m-upatyakāṁ haimavatīṁ carantam. daṇḍīva yūthād apasedhase tvaṁ; yo jetum āśaṁsasi dharmarājam ॥03-252-5॥
[नागं (nāgaṁ) - elephant; प्रभिन्नं (prabhinnam) - broken (i.e., wild, untamed); गिरिकूटकल्पम् (girikūṭakalpam) - like a mountain peak; उपत्यकां (upatyakāṁ) - valley; हैमवतीं (haimavatīṁ) - Himalayan; चरन्तम् (carantam) - wandering; दण्डीव (daṇḍīva) - like a keeper (with a staff); यूथात् (yūthāt) - from the herd; अपसेधसे (apasedhase) - to drive away; त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; यः (yaḥ) - who; जेतुम् (jetum) - to conquer; आशंससि (āśaṁsasi) - aspire; धर्मराजम् (dharmarājam) - Dharmarāja (King of Righteousness, Yudhiṣṭhira);]
(Elephant broken like a mountain peak, Himalayan valley wandering; like a keeper from the herd to drive away, you, who to conquer aspire Dharmarāja.)
You, who aspire to conquer Dharmarāja, are like someone who wishes to drive away, with a staff, a wild elephant wandering in a Himalayan valley, resembling a mountain peak, from its herd. (03-252-5)
बाल्यात्प्रसुप्तस्य महाबलस्य; सिंहस्य पक्ष्माणि मुखाल्लुनासि। पदा समाहत्य पलायमानः; क्रुद्धं यदा द्रक्ष्यसि भीमसेनम् ॥०३-२५२-६॥
bālyātprasuptasya mahābalasya; siṃhasya pakṣmāṇi mukhāllunāsi. padā samāhatya palāyamānaḥ; kruddhaṃ yadā drakṣyasi bhīmasenam ॥03-252-6॥
[बाल्यात् (bālyāt) (bālyāt) - from childhood; प्रसुप्तस्य (prasuptasya) (prasuptasya) - sleeping; महाबलस्य (mahābalasya) (mahābalasya) - of great strength; सिंहस्य (siṃhasya) (siṃhasya) - of a lion; पक्ष्माणि (pakṣmāṇi) (pakṣmāṇi) - eyelashes; मुखात् (mukhāt) (mukhāt) - from the mouth; लुनासि (lunāsi) (lunāsi) - you pluck; पदा (padā) (padā) - with the foot; समाहत्य (samāhatya) (samāhatya) - having struck; पलायमानः (palāyamānaḥ) (palāyamānaḥ) - while fleeing; क्रुद्धम् (kruddham) (kruddham) - angry; यदा (yadā) (yadā) - when; द्रक्ष्यसि (drakṣyasi) (drakṣyasi) - you will see; भीमसेनम् (bhīmasenam) (bhīmasenam) - Bhimasena;]
(From childhood, of one sleeping of great strength, of a lion, the eyelashes from the mouth you pluck. With the foot having struck, while fleeing, angry, when you will see Bhimasena.)
You pluck the eyelashes from the mouth of a sleeping lion of great strength during your childhood, but when you encounter Bhimasena angry, after striking with your foot while fleeing, you will understand (the outcome). (03-252-6)
महाबलं घोरतरं प्रवृद्धं; जातं हरिं पर्वतकन्दरेषु। प्रसुप्तमुग्रं प्रपदेन हंसि; यः क्रुद्धमासेत्स्यसि जिष्णुमुग्रम् ॥०३-२५२-७॥
mahā-balaṃ ghorataraṃ pravṛddhaṃ; jātaṃ hariṃ parvata-kandareṣu. prasuptam-ugraṃ prapadena haṃsi; yaḥ kruddham-āsetsyasi jiṣṇum-ugram ॥03-252-7॥
[महाबलम् (mahā-balam) - great-strength; घोरतरम् (ghorataraṃ) - more-terrible; प्रवृद्धम् (pravṛddham) - grown-up; जातम् (jātam) - born; हरिम् (hariṃ) - lion; पर्वतकन्दरेषु (parvata-kandareṣu) - in mountain-caves; प्रसुप्तम् (prasuptam) - asleep; उग्रम् (ugram) - terrible; प्रपदेन (prapadena) - with the foot; हंसि (haṃsi) - you strike; यः (yaḥ) - who; क्रुद्धम् (kruddham) - angry; आसेत्स्यसि (āsetsyasi) - will meet; जिष्णुम् (jiṣṇum) - victorious; उग्रम् (ugram) - terrible;]
(Great strength, more-terrible, grown-up, born lion in mountain-caves; the asleep terrible (one) you strike with the foot; who the angry will meet the victorious terrible.)
The lion of great strength, more terrible and fully grown, born in the mountain caves — if you strike the terrible one sleeping with your foot, you will meet the victorious and terrible one when he is angry. (03-252-7)
कृष्णोरगौ तीक्ष्णविषौ द्विजिह्वौ; मत्तः पदाक्रामसि पुच्छदेशे। यः पाण्डवाभ्यां पुरुषोत्तमाभ्यां; जघन्यजाभ्यां प्रयुयुत्ससे त्वम् ॥०३-२५२-८॥
kṛṣṇoragau tīkṣṇaviṣau dvijihvau; mattaḥ padākrāmasi pucchadeśe. yaḥ pāṇḍavābhyāṃ puruṣottamābhyāṃ; jaghanyajābhyāṃ prayuyutsase tvam ॥03-252-8॥
[कृष्ण-उरगौ (kṛṣṇa-uragau) - black serpents; तीक्ष्ण-विषौ (tīkṣṇa-viṣau) - having sharp poison; द्वि-जिह्वौ (dvi-jihvau) - having two tongues; मत्तः (mattaḥ) - intoxicated; पद-अक्रमसि (pada-akramasi) - you tread with your feet; पुच्छ-देशे (puccha-deśe) - on the tail region; यः (yaḥ) - who; पाण्डवाभ्यां (pāṇḍavābhyāṃ) - by the two Pāṇḍavas; पुरुषोत्तमाभ्यां (puruṣottamābhyāṃ) - by the two best of men; जघन्य-जाभ्यां (jaghanya-jābhyāṃ) - by the ignoble ones; प्रयुयुत्ससे (prayuyutsase) - you desire to contend; त्वम् (tvam) - you;]
(Black serpents, having sharp poison, with two tongues; intoxicated, you tread with your feet on the tail region. Who, by the two Pāṇḍavas, by the two best of men, by the base ones, you desire to contend, you.)
Intoxicated, you step with your feet on the tail region of black serpents possessing sharp poison and two tongues. You wish to contend with the two Pāṇḍavas, who are the best among men but whom you call ignoble. (03-252-8)
यथा च वेणुः कदली नलो वा; फलन्त्यभावाय न भूतयेऽऽत्मनः। तथैव मां तैः परिरक्ष्यमाणा; मादास्यसे कर्कटकीव गर्भम् ॥०३-२५२-९॥
yathā ca veṇuḥ kadalī nalo vā; phalanty-abhāvāya na bhūtaye''tmanaḥ. tathaiva māṃ taiḥ parirakṣyamāṇā mā dāsyase karkaṭakīva garbham ॥03-252-9॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; च (ca) - and; वेणुः (veṇuḥ) - the bamboo; कदली (kadalī) - the plantain (banana) plant; नलः (nalaḥ) - the reed; वा (vā) - or; फलन्ति (phalanti) - bear fruit; अभावाय (abhāvāya) - towards destruction; न (na) - not; भूतये (bhūtaye) - for prosperity; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of themselves; तथैव (tathaiva) - just so; माम् (mām) - me; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; परिरक्ष्यमाणा (parirakṣyamāṇā) - being protected; मा (mā) - do not; दास्यसे (dāsyase) - cause to give; कर्कटकीव (karkaṭakīva) - like a crab; गर्भम् (garbham) - offspring; ॥०३-२५२-९॥ (॥03-252-9॥) - (3-252-9);]
(Just as and the bamboo, plantain, or reed bear fruit for destruction, not for prosperity of themselves, just so me by them being protected do not cause to give like a crab its offspring.)
Just as the bamboo, plantain, or reed produce fruit that leads to their own destruction and not to their own good, in the same way, if you protect me by them, do not let me, like a crab, give birth to my own destroyer. (3-252-9)

जानामि कृष्णे विदितं ममैत; द्यथाविधास्ते नरदेवपुत्राः। न त्वेवमेतेन विभीषणेन; शक्या वयं त्रासयितुं त्वयाद्य ॥०३-२५२-१०॥
jānāmi kṛṣṇe viditaṃ mamaita; dyathāvidhāste naradevaputrāḥ. na tvevametena vibhīṣaṇena; śakyā vayaṃ trāsayituṃ tvayādya ॥03-252-10॥
[जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - O Kṛṣṇa; विदितं (viditaṃ) - known; मम (mama) - to me; एतत् (etat) - this; यथाविधाः (yathāvidhāḥ) - as is proper; ते (te) - those; नरदेवपुत्राः (naradevaputrāḥ) - sons of human kings; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; एवम् (evam) - thus; एतेन (etena) - by this; विभीषणेन (vibhīṣaṇena) - by Vibhīṣaṇa; शक्या (śakyā) - capable; वयम् (vayam) - we; त्रासयितुं (trāsayitum) - to be frightened; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अद्य (adya) - today;]
(I know, O Kṛṣṇa, this is known to me; as is proper, those are the sons of human kings. But not thus by this Vibhīṣaṇa are we capable to be frightened by you today.)
I know this, O Kṛṣṇa, it is known to me; as is appropriate, those are the sons of men. But by this Vibhīṣaṇa, we cannot be frightened by you today. (03-252-10)
वयं पुनः सप्तदशेषु कृष्णे; कुलेषु सर्वेऽनवमेषु जाताः। षड्भ्यो गुणेभ्योऽभ्यधिका विहीना; न्मन्यामहे द्रौपदि पाण्डुपुत्रान् ॥०३-२५२-११॥
vayaṁ punaḥ saptadaśeṣu kṛṣṇe; kuleṣu sarve'navameṣu jātāḥ। ṣaḍbhyo guṇebhyo'bhyadhikā vihīnā; nmanyāmahe draupadi pāṇḍuputrān ॥03-252-11॥
[वयं (vayaṁ) - we; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; सप्तदशेषु (saptadaśeṣu) - among seventeen; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - O Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī); कुलेषु (kuleṣu) - in families; सर्वे (sarve) - all; अनवमेषु (anavameṣu) - without inferiority; जाताः (jātāḥ) - born; षड्भ्यो (ṣaḍbhyaḥ) - from six; गुणेभ्यः (guṇebhyaḥ) - qualities; अभ्यधिका (abhyadhikā) - surpassing; विहीना (vihīnā) - devoid; न (na) - not; मन्यामहे (manyāmahe) - we consider; द्रौपदि (draupadi) - O Draupadī; पाण्डुपुत्रान् (pāṇḍuputrān) - the sons of Pāṇḍu;]
(We, again, O Kṛṣṇā, among the seventeen (families), all born in families without inferiority, devoid of (being) surpassing in the six qualities, do not consider, O Draupadī, the sons of Pāṇḍu.)
O Draupadī, we, all born among the seventeen noble families without any inferiority, do not consider the sons of Pāṇḍu to be superior to us in any of the six qualities. (03-252-11)
सा क्षिप्रमातिष्ठ गजं रथं वा; न वाक्यमात्रेण वयं हि शक्याः। आशंस वा त्वं कृपणं वदन्ती; सौवीरराजस्य पुनः प्रसादम् ॥०३-२५२-१२॥
sā kṣipram-ātiṣṭha gajaṁ rathaṁ vā; na vākyamātreṇa vayaṁ hi śakyāḥ. āśaṁsa vā tvaṁ kṛpaṇaṁ vadantī; sauvīrarājasya punaḥ prasādam ॥03-252-12॥
[सा (sā) - she; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; आतिष्ठ (ātiṣṭha) - mount; गजम् (gajam) - elephant; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; वा (vā) - or; न (na) - not; वाक्यमात्रेण (vākyamātreṇa) - by mere words; वयम् (vayam) - we; हि (hi) - indeed; शक्याः (śakyāḥ) - capable (to be accomplished); आशंस (āśaṁsa) - hope for; वा (vā) - or; त्वम् (tvam) - you; कृपणम् (kṛpaṇam) - miserable; वदन्ती (vadantī) - speaking; सौवीरराजस्य (sauvīrarājasya) - of the king of Sauvīra; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; प्रसादम् (prasādam) - favor;]
(She quickly mount elephant chariot or; not by mere words we indeed capable; hope for or you miserable speaking, of the Sauvīra king again favor.)
Either quickly mount the elephant or the chariot; for we cannot accomplish this by mere words. Or, you—speaking miserably—may hope again for the favor of the king of Sauvīra. (03-252-12)
द्रौपद्युवाच॥

महाबला किं त्विह दुर्बलेव; सौवीरराजस्य मताहमस्मि। याहं प्रमाथादिह सम्प्रतीता; सौवीरराजं कृपणं वदेयम् ॥०३-२५२-१३॥
mahābalā kiṁ tv-iha durbaleva; sauvīrarājasya matāham-asmi. yāhaṁ pramāthād-iha sampratītā; sauvīrarājaṁ kṛpaṇaṁ vadeyam ॥03-252-13॥
[महाबला (mahābalā) - O mighty-armed one; किं (kiṁ) - why; त्विह (tv-iha) - you here; दुर्बला (durbalā) - weak (feminine); इव (iva) - as if; सौवीरराजस्य (sauvīrarājasya) - of the king of Sauvīra; मता (matā) - thought (regarded as); अहम् (aham) - I; अस्मि (asmi) - am; या (yā) - who; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रमाथात् (pramāthāt) - from devastation (oppression); इह (iha) - here; सम्प्रतीता (sampratītā) - have obtained refuge; सौवीरराजम् (sauvīrarājam) - the king of Sauvīra; कृपणम् (kṛpaṇam) - miserable (pitiful); वदेयम् (vadeyam) - I should call;]
(O mighty-armed one, why are you here as if weak; I am thought to be (regarded as) of the king of Sauvīra. I, who have obtained refuge here from devastation, should call the king of Sauvīra pitiable.)
O mighty-armed one, why do you seem weak here? I am regarded as belonging to the king of Sauvīra. I, who found refuge here from oppression, should call the king of Sauvīra pitiable. (03-252-13)
यस्या हि कृष्णौ पदवीं चरेतां; समास्थितावेकरथे सहायौ। इन्द्रोऽपि तां नापहरेत्कथं चि; न्मनुष्यमात्रः कृपणः कुतोऽन्यः ॥०३-२५२-१४॥
yasyā hi kṛṣṇau padavīṃ caretām; samāsthitāvekarathe sahāyau. indro'pi tāṃ nāpaharet kathaṃ ci; nmanuṣyamātraḥ kṛpaṇaḥ kuto'nyaḥ ॥03-252-14॥
[यस्या (yasyā) - whose (feminine genitive of yā); हि (hi) - indeed; कृष्णौ (kṛṣṇau) - the two Kṛṣṇas (Kṛṣṇa and Arjuna; dual); पदवीं (padavīṃ) - path; track; चरेतां (caretām) - may go; may tread (dual, optative); समास्थितौ (samāsthitau) - having mounted; stationed together (dual); एकोरथे (eka-rathe) - on the same chariot; सहायौ (sahāyau) - as helpers; assistants (dual); इन्द्रः अपि (indraḥ api) - Indra also; तां (tām) - her; न (na) - not; अपहरेत् (apaharet) - might take away; could seize; कथं चित् (kathaṃ cit) - in any way; न (na) - not; मनुष्यमात्रः (manuṣyamātraḥ) - a mere human being; कृपणः (kṛpaṇaḥ) - wretched; feeble; कुतः अन्यः (kutaḥ anyaḥ) - how could another; whence another;]
(Whose indeed the two Kṛṣṇas may go the path; having mounted together on the same chariot as helpers. Indra also her might not seize in any way; not a mere human being, wretched—how could another? (03-252-14))
Indeed, the path of her whose companions are the two Kṛṣṇas—mounting the same chariot as helpers—could not be seized even by Indra; how then could a mere wretched human or anyone else do so? (03-252-14)
यदा किरीटी परवीरघाती; निघ्नन्रथस्थो द्विषतां मनांसि। मदन्तरे त्वद्ध्वजिनीं प्रवेष्टा; कक्षं दहन्नग्निरिवोष्णगेषु ॥०३-२५२-१५॥
yadā kirīṭī paravīraghātī; nighnan rathastho dviṣatāṃ manāṃsi. madantare tvaddhvajinīṃ praveṣṭā; kakṣaṃ dahann agnir ivoṣṇageṣu ॥03-252-15॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; किरीटी (kirīṭī) - the one with a diadem; परवीरघाती (paravīraghātī) - destroyer of enemy heroes; निघ्नन् (nighnan) - slaying; रथस्थः (rathasthaḥ) - standing on the chariot; द्विषताम् (dviṣatām) - of enemies; मनांसि (manāṃsi) - minds; मदन्तरे (madantare) - in my midst; त्वद्ध्वजिनीम् (tvaddhvajinīm) - your army; प्रवेष्टा (praveṣṭā) - will enter; कक्षम् (kakṣam) - forest-region (undergrowth); दहन् (dahan) - burning; अग्निः इव (agniḥ iva) - like fire; उष्णगेषु (uṣṇageṣu) - among dry grasses;]
(When the diademed destroyer of enemy heroes, slaying while standing on his chariot, the minds of enemies, in my midst, your army will enter, burning the forest-region like fire among dry grasses.)
When the diademed warrior, destroyer of enemy heroes, slaying from his chariot the minds of foes, enters your army in my midst like fire burning the undergrowth among dry grasses. (03-252-15)
जनार्दनस्यानुगा वृष्णिवीरा; महेष्वासाः केकयाश्चापि सर्वे। एते हि सर्वे मम राजपुत्राः; प्रहृष्टरूपाः पदवीं चरेयुः ॥०३-२५२-१६॥
janārdanasyānugā vṛṣṇivīrā; maheṣvāsāḥ kekayāścāpi sarve. ete hi sarve mama rājaputrāḥ; prahṛṣṭarūpāḥ padavīṃ careyuḥ ॥03-252-16॥
[जनार्दनस्य (janārdanasya) - of Janārdana; अनुगाः (anugāḥ) - followers; वृष्णिवीरा (vṛṣṇivīrā) - heroes of the Vṛṣṇi (clan); महेष्वासाः (maheṣvāsāḥ) - great bowmen; केकयाः (kekayāḥ) - the Kekayas; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; सर्वे (sarve) - all; एते (ete) - these; हि (hi) - indeed; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मम (mama) - my; राजपुत्राः (rājaputrāḥ) - princes; प्रहृष्टरूपाः (prahṛṣṭarūpāḥ) - with delighted forms; पदवीं (padavīṃ) - path; चरेयुः (careyuḥ) - might proceed;]
(Of Janārdana followers, heroes of the Vṛṣṇi, great bowmen, the Kekayas also, all; these indeed all my princes, with delighted forms, path might proceed.)
The followers of Janārdana, the Vṛṣṇi heroes, the great bowmen, and also all the Kekayas—these indeed are all my royal sons; with joyful countenances they might proceed on the path. (3-252-16)
मौर्वीविसृष्टाः स्तनयित्नुघोषा; गाण्डीवमुक्तास्त्वतिवेगवन्तः। हस्तं समाहत्य धनञ्जयस्य; भीमाः शब्दं घोरतरं नदन्ति ॥०३-२५२-१७॥
maurvī-visṛṣṭāḥ stanayitnu-ghoṣāḥ; gāṇḍīva-muktāḥ tu ati-vega-vantaḥ। hastaṃ samāhatya dhanañjayasya; bhīmāḥ śabdaṃ ghorataraṃ nadanti ॥03-252-17॥
[मौर्वीविसृष्टाः (maurvī-visṛṣṭāḥ) - released from the bowstring; स्तनयित्नुघोषा (stanayitnu-ghoṣāḥ) - thundering in sound; गाण्डीवमुक्ताः (gāṇḍīva-muktāḥ) - shot from the Gāṇḍīva bow; त्वतिवेगवन्तः (tu ati-vega-vantaḥ) - and having very great speed; हस्तं (hastaṃ) - hand; समाहत्य (samāhatya) - having struck; धनञ्जयस्य (dhanañjayasya) - of Dhanañjaya; भीमाः (bhīmāḥ) - terrible (ones); शब्दं (śabdaṃ) - sound; घोरतरं (ghorataraṃ) - more terrible; नदन्ति (nadanti) - roar;]
(Released from the bowstring, thundering in sound, and shot from the Gāṇḍīva bow and having very great speed. Having struck the hand of Dhanañjaya, terrible (ones) roar a sound more terrible.)
Arrows released from the bowstring, thundering like thunder, and shot from the Gāṇḍīva with great speed, after striking Dhanañjaya's hand, resound with even a more dreadful roar. (03-252-17)
गाण्डीवमुक्तांश्च महाशरौघा; न्पतङ्गसङ्घानिव शीघ्रवेगान्। सशङ्खघोषः सतलत्रघोषो; गाण्डीवधन्वा मुहुरुद्वमंश्च ॥ यदा शरानर्पयिता तवोरसि; तदा मनस्ते किमिवाभविष्यत् ॥०३-२५२-१८॥
gāṇḍīvamuktāṃśca mahāśaraughāḥ; nipataṅgasaṅghāniva śīghravegān. saśaṅkhaghoṣaḥ satalatraghoṣaḥ; gāṇḍīvadhanvā muhurudvamaṃśca ॥ yadā śarān arpayitā tavorasi; tadā manaste kimivābhaviṣyat ॥03-252-18॥
[गाण्डीवमुक्तान् (gāṇḍīvamuktān) - released by the Gāṇḍīva (bow); च (ca) - and; महाशरौघान् (mahāśaraughān) - great streams of arrows; पतङ्गसङ्घानिव (pataṅgasaṅghān iva) - like swarms of moths; शीघ्रवेगान् (śīghravegān) - of swift speed; सशङ्खघोषः (saśaṅkhaghoṣaḥ) - accompanied by the sound of conches; सतलत्रघोषः (satalatraghoṣaḥ) - accompanied by the sound of bowstrings; गाण्डीवधन्वा (gāṇḍīvadhanvā) - the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow (Arjuna); मुहुः (muhuḥ) - repeatedly; उद्वमन् (udvaman) - discharging; च (ca) - and; यदा (yadā) - when; शरान् (śarān) - arrows; अर्पयिता (arpayitā) - put (directed); तव (tava) - your; उरस् (uras) - chest; तदा (tadā) - then; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; ते (te) - your; किमिव (kim iva) - what, indeed; अभविष्यत् (abhaviṣyat) - would have become;]
(And the great streams of arrows released by the Gāṇḍīva, like swarms of moths of swift speed; accompanied by the sound of conches and the sound of bowstrings, the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow was repeatedly discharging. When he aimed arrows at your chest, then what indeed would your mind have become? (03-252-18))
The great torrents of arrows shot from the Gāṇḍīva, swift as swarms of moths, along with the resounding blasts of conches and twanging of bowstrings, were ceaselessly discharged by the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow. When he was aiming arrows at your chest, what must your mind have been like then? (03-252-18)
गदाहस्तं भीममभिद्रवन्तं; माद्रीपुत्रौ सम्पतन्तौ दिशश्च। अमर्षजं क्रोधविषं वमन्तौ; दृष्ट्वा चिरं तापमुपैष्यसेऽधम ॥०३-२५२-१९॥
gadā-hastaṃ bhīmam abhidravantaṃ; mādrī-putrau sampatantau diśaś ca। amarṣa-jaṃ krodha-viṣaṃ vamantau; dṛṣṭvā ciraṃ tāpam upaiṣyase'dhama ॥03-252-19॥
[गदाहस्तं (gadā-hastaṃ) - with mace in hand; भीमम् (bhīmam) - Bhima; अभिद्रवन्तं (abhidravantam) - charging (at you); माद्रीपुत्रौ (mādrī-putrau) - the two sons of Mādrī; सम्पतन्तौ (sampatantau) - rushing together; दिशः (diśaḥ) - the directions; च (ca) - and; अमर्षजं (amarṣa-jam) - arising from intolerance; क्रोधविषं (krodha-viṣam) - poison of anger; वमन्तौ (vamantau) - emitting; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; चिरं (ciraṃ) - for a long time; तापम् (tāpam) - pain; उपैष्यसे (upaiṣyase) - you will attain; अधम (adhama) - O wicked one;]
(With mace in hand, Bhima charging; the two sons of Mādrī rushing together and (in all) directions, emitting the poison of anger born of intolerance; having seen, for a long time, pain you will attain, O wicked one.)
When you see Bhima with mace in hand charging at you, and the two sons of Mādrī rushing forward from all directions, both spewing the poison of anger born from intolerance, O wicked one, you will long suffer agony. (03-252-19)
यथा चाहं नातिचरे कथं चि; त्पतीन्महार्हान्मनसापि जातु। तेनाद्य सत्येन वशीकृतं त्वां; द्रष्टास्मि पार्थैः परिकृष्यमाणम् ॥०३-२५२-२०॥
yathā cāhaṃ nāticare kathaṃ cid patīn mahārhān manasā api jātu. tenādya satyena vaśīkṛtaṃ tvāṃ draṣṭāsmi pārthaiḥ parikṛṣyamāṇam ॥03-252-20॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; न (na) - not; अतिचरे (aticare) - transgress; कथंचित् (kathaṃcit) - in any way; पतीन् (patīn) - husbands; महार्हान् (mahārhān) - greatly worthy; मनसा (manasā) - with the mind; अपि (api) - even; जातु (jātu) - at any time; तेन (tena) - by that; अद्य (adya) - today; सत्येन (satyena) - by truth; वशीकृतम् (vaśīkṛtam) - brought under control; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; द्रष्टास्मि (draṣṭāsmi) - I shall see; पार्थैः (pārthaiḥ) - by Parthas; परिकृष्यमाणम् (parikṛṣyamāṇam) - being dragged around;]
(As and I not transgress in any way the husbands greatly worthy with the mind even at any time; by that today by truth brought under control you I shall see by the Parthas being dragged around.)
Just as I have never transgressed my greatly worthy husbands in any way, even in my mind at any time, therefore today by that truth may you be subdued—I shall see you being dragged around by the Parthas. (03-252-20)
न सम्भ्रमं गन्तुमहं हि शक्ष्ये; त्वया नृशंसेन विकृष्यमाणा। समागताहं हि कुरुप्रवीरैः; पुनर्वनं काम्यकमागता च ॥०३-२५२-२१॥
na sambhramaṃ gantum ahaṃ hi śakṣye; tvayā nṛśaṃsena vikṛṣyamāṇā। samāgatāhaṃ hi kurupravīraiḥ; punar vanaṃ kāmyakam āgatā ca ॥03-252-21॥
[न (na) - not; सम्भ्रमं (sambhramam) - in agitation; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to go; अहम् (aham) - I; हि (hi) - indeed; शक्ष्ये (śakṣye) - am able; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; नृशंसेन (nṛśaṃsena) - cruel; विकृष्यमाणा (vikṛṣyamāṇā) - being dragged; समागताऽहम् (samāgatā aham) - I had come together; हि (hi) - indeed; कुरुप्रवीरैः (kurupravīraiḥ) - with the heroes of the Kuru lineage; पुनः (punar) - again; वनं (vanam) - to the forest; काम्यकम् (kāmyakam) - Kamyaka (name of the forest); आगता (āgatā) - (I) have come; च (ca) - and;]
(I am not able to go in agitation indeed, being dragged by you, cruel one; I had indeed come together with the heroes of the Kuru lineage; again to the forest Kamyaka I have come and.)
I truly cannot go in agitation, being dragged by you, cruel one; I had once come along with the noble Kuru heroes, and now again I have come to the Kamyaka forest. (03-252-21)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥

सा ताननुप्रेक्ष्य विशालनेत्रा; जिघृक्षमाणानवभर्त्सयन्ती। प्रोवाच मा मा स्पृशतेति भीता; धौम्यं प्रचुक्रोश पुरोहितं सा ॥०३-२५२-२२॥
sā tānanuprekṣya viśālanetrā; jighṛkṣamāṇān avabhartsayantī. provāca mā mā spṛśateti bhītā; dhaumyaṃ pracukrośa purohitaṃ sā ॥03-252-22॥
[सा (sā) - she; तान् (tān) - them; अनुप्रेक्ष्य (anuprekṣya) - having looked at; विशालनेत्रा (viśālanetrā) - large-eyed; जिघृक्षमाणान् (jighṛkṣamāṇān) - desiring to seize; अवभर्त्सयन्ती (avabhartsayantī) - rebuking; प्रोवाच (provāca) - she said; मा मा (mā mā) - not, not; स्पृशत (spṛśata) - touch (you all); इति (iti) - thus; भीता (bhītā) - frightened; धौम्यं (dhaumyam) - Dhaumya; प्रचुक्रोश (pracukrośa) - she cried out to; पुरोहितं (purohitam) - the priest; सा (sā) - she;]
(She, having looked at them, large-eyed, desiring to seize, rebuking, she said, "Do not, do not touch (me)," frightened, Dhaumya, she cried out to the priest she.)
She, the large-eyed lady, saw them desiring to seize her and rebuked them; frightened, she said, "Do not, do not touch me," and cried out to Dhaumya, the priest. (03-252-22)
जग्राह तामुत्तरवस्त्रदेशे; जयद्रथस्तं समवाक्षिपत्सा। तया समाक्षिप्ततनुः स पापः; पपात शाखीव निकृत्तमूलः ॥०३-२५२-२३॥
jagrāha tām uttaravastradeśe; jayadrathas taṃ samavākṣipat sā. tayā samākṣiptatanuḥ sa pāpaḥ; papāta śākhīva nikṛttamūlaḥ ॥03-252-23॥
[जग्राह (jagrāha) - (he) seized; ताम् (tām) - her; उत्तरवस्त्रदेशे (uttaravastradeśe) - at the upper garment region; जयद्रथः (jayadrathaḥ) - Jayadratha; तम् (tam) - him; समवाक्षिपत् (samavākṣipat) - threw down together; सा (sā) - she; तया (tayā) - by her; समाक्षिप्ततनुः (samākṣiptatanuḥ) - body cast down together; सः (saḥ) - he; पापः (pāpaḥ) - the wicked one; पपात (papāta) - fell; शाखीव (śākhīva) - like a branch; निकृत्तमूलः (nikṛttamūlaḥ) - whose root has been cut off;]
(He seized her at the region of the upper garment; Jayadratha threw him down together. His body cast down together by her, that wicked one fell like a branch whose root has been cut off.)
He seized her by the upper garment, but Jayadratha threw him down. Struck down by her, that evil man fell like a branch whose root has been severed. (03-252-23)
प्रगृह्यमाणा तु महाजवेन; मुहुर्विनिःश्वस्य च राजपुत्री। सा कृष्यमाणा रथमारुरोह; धौम्यस्य पादावभिवाद्य कृष्णा ॥०३-२५२-२४॥
pragṛhyamāṇā tu mahājavena; muhurviniḥśvasya ca rājaputrī. sā kṛṣyamāṇā ratham āruroh; dhaumyasya pādāv abhivādya kṛṣṇā ॥03-252-24॥
[प्रगृह्यमाणा (pragṛhyamāṇā) - being seized; तु (tu) - but; महाजवेन (mahājavena) - with great speed; मुहुः (muhuḥ) - again and again; विनिःश्वस्य (viniḥśvasya) - sighing deeply; च (ca) - and; राजपुत्री (rājaputrī) - the princess; सा (sā) - she; कृष्यमाणा (kṛṣyamāṇā) - being dragged; रथम् (ratham) - the chariot; आरुरोह (āruroh) - ascended; धौम्यस्य (dhaumyasya) - of Dhaumya; पादौ (pādau) - the feet; अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Kṛṣṇā;]
(Being seized but with great speed, again and again sighing and the princess, she being dragged (onto) the chariot ascended, having saluted the feet of Dhaumya, Kṛṣṇā.)
But Kṛṣṇā, the princess, as she was being seized and dragged rapidly, repeatedly sighing, ascended the chariot after saluting Dhaumya’s feet. (03-252-24)
धौम्य उवाच॥
dhaumya uvāca॥
[धौम्य (dhaumya) - Dhaumya (proper name); उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

Dhaumya said.
नेयं शक्या त्वया नेतुमविजित्य महारथान्। धर्मं क्षत्रस्य पौराणमवेक्षस्व जयद्रथ ॥०३-२५२-२५॥
neyaṁ śakyā tvayā netum avijitya mahārathān। dharmaṁ kṣatrasya paurāṇam avekṣasva jayadratha ॥03-252-25॥
[नेयम् (neyaṁ) - this (woman); शक्या (śakyā) - possible; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; नेतुम् (netum) - to be led (carried away); अविजित्य (avijitya) - without conquering; महारथान् (mahārathān) - great chariot-warriors; धर्मम् (dharmaṁ) - law; क्षत्रस्य (kṣatrasya) - of the kṣatriya; पौराणम् (paurāṇam) - ancient; अवेक्षस्व (avekṣasva) - consider; जयद्रथ (jayadratha) - O Jayadratha;]
(This (woman) by you is not possible to lead away without conquering the great chariot-warriors. The ancient law of the kṣatriya consider, O Jayadratha.)
O Jayadratha, you cannot take away this woman without first defeating the great chariot-warriors. Consider the ancient law of the kṣatriya race. (03-252-25)
क्षुद्रं कृत्वा फलं पापं प्राप्स्यसि त्वमसंशयम्। आसाद्य पाण्डवान्वीरान्धर्मराजपुरोगमान् ॥०३-२५२-२६॥
kṣudraṁ kṛtvā phalaṁ pāpaṁ prāpsyasi tvam asaṁśayam। āsādya pāṇḍavān vīrān dharmarājapurogamān॥03-252-26॥
[क्षुद्रं (kṣudram) - base; mean; vile; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; after doing; फलं (phalam) - fruit; result; outcome; पापं (pāpam) - evil; sin; प्राप्स्यसि (prāpsyasi) - you will obtain; you will get; त्वम् (tvam) - you; असंशयम् (asaṁśayam) - without doubt; certainly; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having approached; having met; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pāṇḍavas; वीरान् (vīrān) - heroes; warriors; धर्मराजपुरोगमान् (dharmarājapurogamān) - led by Dharmarāja; with Dharmarāja at the forefront;]
(Having done a base result, you will obtain evil without doubt; having approached the heroic Pāṇḍavas, led by Dharmarāja.)
By committing a base act, you will surely reap an evil result, encountering the heroic Pāṇḍavas led by Dharmarāja. (03-252-26)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

ity uktvā hriyamāṇāṃ tāṃ rājaputrīṃ yaśasvinīm। anvagacchata tadā dhaumyaḥ padātigaṇamadhyagaḥ॥03-252-27॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; ह्रियमाणां (hriyamāṇām) - being carried away; तां (tām) - her; राजपुत्रीं (rājaputrīm) - princess; यशस्विनीम् (yaśasvinīm) - the illustrious; अन्वगच्छत् (anvagacchat) - followed; तदा (tadā) - then; धौम्यः (dhaumyaḥ) - Dhaumya; पदातिगणमध्यगः (padātigaṇamadhyagaḥ) - amidst the group of foot-soldiers;]
(Thus having spoken, her—being carried away, the princess, the illustrious—then Dhaumya, amidst the group of foot-soldiers, followed.)
Thus, having spoken, Dhaumya, amidst the group of foot-soldiers, followed the illustrious princess as she was being carried away. (03-252-27)
