वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
ततो दिशः सम्प्रविहृत्य पार्था; मृगान्वराहान्महिषांश्च हत्वा। धनुर्धराः श्रेष्ठतमाः पृथिव्यां; पृथक्चरन्तः सहिता बभूवुः ॥०३-२५३-१॥
Then, the sons of Pṛthā, the best of bowmen, having spread out in all directions and slain deer, boars, and buffaloes, moved about the earth separately, yet together. (03-253-1)
ततो मृगव्यालगणानुकीर्णं; महावनं तद्विहगोपघुष्टम्। भ्रातॄंश्च तानभ्यवदद्युधिष्ठिरः; श्रुत्वा गिरो व्याहरतां मृगाणाम् ॥०३-२५३-२॥
Then, in that great forest teeming with herds of deer and wild beasts, and resounding with birds, Yudhishthira, having heard the calls uttered by the deer, addressed his brothers. (03-253-2)
आदित्यदीप्तां दिशमभ्युपेत्य; मृगद्विजाः क्रूरमिमे वदन्ति। आयासमुग्रं प्रतिवेदयन्तो; महाहवं शत्रुभिर्वावमानम् ॥०३-२५३-३॥
Having reached the direction brightened by the sun, these animals and birds utter cruel sounds, reporting severe hardship and the distressful state of the great battle, humiliated by the enemies. (03-253-3)
क्षिप्रं निवर्तध्वमलं मृगैर्नो; मनो हि मे दूयति दह्यते च। बुद्धिं समाच्छाद्य च मे समन्यु; रुद्धूयते प्राणपतिः शरीरे ॥०३-२५३-४॥
Quickly turn back, enough of following the deer for us; my mind is truly tormented and burning. My anger covers my understanding, and the lord of my life-breath feels obstructed in my body. (03-253-4)
सरः सुपर्णेन हृतोरगं यथा; राष्ट्रं यथाराजकमात्तलक्ष्मि। एवंविधं मे प्रतिभाति काम्यकं; शौण्डैर्यथा पीतरसश्च कुम्भः ॥०३-२५३-५॥
Kamyaka seems to me just like a lake after Garuḍa has carried away its snake, or a kingdom deprived of fortune without a king, or like a pitcher from which drunkards have drained the sap. (03-253-5)
ते सैन्धवैरत्यनिलौघवेगै; र्महाजवैर्वाजिभिरुह्यमानाः। युक्तैर्बृहद्भिः सुरथैर्नृवीरा; स्तदाश्रमायाभिमुखा बभूवुः ॥०३-२५३-६॥
They, heroic men, drawn by swift Sindhu horses and great noble chariots, proceeded towards the hermitage. (03-253-6)
तेषां तु गोमायुरनल्पघोषो; निवर्ततां वाममुपेत्य पार्श्वम्। प्रव्याहरत्तं प्रविमृश्य राजा; प्रोवाच भीमं च धनञ्जयं च ॥०३-२५३-७॥
But as they were returning, a loud-voiced jackal approached their left side and cried out. Considering this, the king spoke to Bhīma and to Dhanañjaya (Arjuna). (03-253-7)
यथा वदत्येष विहीनयोनिः; शालावृको वाममुपेत्य पार्श्वम्। सुव्यक्तमस्मानवमन्य पापैः; कृतोऽभिमर्दः कुरुभिः प्रसह्य ॥०३-२५३-८॥
Just as this base-born one speaks, the jackal approaching from the left—clearly, we have been contemptuously overpowered by the wicked Kauravas by force. (03-253-8)
इत्येव ते तद्वनमाविशन्तो; महत्यरण्ये मृगयां चरित्वा। बालामपश्यन्त तदा रुदन्तीं; धात्रेयिकां प्रेष्यवधूं प्रियायाः ॥०३-२५३-९॥
Thus indeed, entering that forest, they, after roaming in the great wilderness on a hunt, then saw the young girl—the weeping servant-wife, daughter of the nurse, of their beloved. (03-253-9)
तामिन्द्रसेनस्त्वरितोऽभिसृत्य; रथादवप्लुत्य ततोऽभ्यधावत्। प्रोवाच चैनां वचनं नरेन्द्र; धात्रेयिकामार्ततरस्तदानीम् ॥०३-२५३-१०॥
Indrasena swiftly approached her, leapt down from the chariot and then rushed towards her. The king, being most distressed at that time, spoke a word to Dhātreyikā. (03-253-10)
किं रोदिषि त्वं पतिता धरण्यां; किं ते मुखं शुष्यति दीनवर्णम्। कच्चिन्न पापैः सुनृशंसकृद्भिः; प्रमाथिता द्रौपदी राजपुत्री ॥ अनिन्द्यरूपा सुविशालनेत्रा; शरीरतुल्या कुरुपुङ्गवानाम् ॥०३-२५३-११॥
Why are you crying, you who have fallen to the ground? Why is your face so dried and discolored? Surely, Draupadī, princess of irreproachable beauty and large eyes, equal in form to the best of the Kurus, has not been assaulted by wicked men of cruel deeds? (03-253-11)
यद्येव देवी पृथिवीं प्रविष्टा; दिवं प्रपन्नाप्यथ वा समुद्रम्। तस्या गमिष्यन्ति पदं हि पार्था; स्तथा हि सन्तप्यति धर्मराजः ॥०३-२५३-१२॥
If the goddess has entered the earth, or gone to heaven, or to the ocean, then the Pārthas will surely go to her; thus indeed the king of dharma (Yudhiṣṭhira) is grieving. (03-253-12)
को हीदृशानामरिमर्दनानां; क्लेशक्षमाणामपराजितानाम्। प्राणैः समामिष्टतमां जिहीर्षे; दनुत्तमं रत्नमिव प्रमूढः ॥ न बुध्यते नाथवतीमिहाद्य; बहिश्चरं हृदयं पाण्डवानाम् ॥०३-२५३-१३॥
Who, indeed, among such unconquered slayers of enemies, endurers of hardship, would desire to take away, as if deluded, the greatest treasure—one as dear as life itself—just as one seeks a jewel? He does not realize that, here today, she who possesses protectors is, in truth, the outward-going heart of the Pāṇḍavas. (03-253-13)
कस्याद्य कायं प्रतिभिद्य घोरा; महीं प्रवेक्ष्यन्ति शिताः शराग्र्याः। मा त्वं शुचस्तां प्रति भीरु विद्धि; यथाद्य कृष्णा पुनरेष्यतीति ॥ निहत्य सर्वान्द्विषतः समग्रा; न्पार्थाः समेष्यन्त्यथ याज्ञसेन्या ॥०३-२५३-१४॥
Today, whose body will be pierced by terrible, sharp arrow-tips and will enter the earth? Do not grieve for her, fearful one; know that today Kṛṣṇā (Draupadī) will return again. When all enemies are slain, the Pāṇḍavas will be wholly reunited with Yājñasenī (Draupadī). (03-253-14)
अथाब्रवीच्चारुमुखं प्रमृज्य; धात्रेयिका सारथिमिन्द्रसेनम्। जयद्रथेनापहृता प्रमथ्य; पञ्चेन्द्रकल्पान्परिभूय कृष्णा ॥०३-२५३-१५॥
Then Dhātreyikā, having consoled the one with a beautiful face, spoke to the charioteer Indrasena: 'Kṛṣṇā was carried away by Jayadratha after overpowering and defeating the five who were equal to Indra.' (03-253-15)
तिष्ठन्ति वर्त्मानि नवान्यमूनि; वृक्षाश्च न म्लान्ति तथैव भग्नाः। आवर्तयध्वं ह्यनुयात शीघ्रं; न दूरयातैव हि राजपुत्री ॥०३-२५३-१६॥
These new paths remain; and the trees, even when broken, do not wither. Turn back and follow quickly, for the princess indeed has not gone far. (03-253-16)
संनह्यध्वं सर्व एवेन्द्रकल्पा; महान्ति चारूणि च दंशनानि। गृह्णीत चापानि महाधनानि; शरांश्च शीघ्रं पदवीं व्रजध्वम् ॥०३-२५३-१७॥
All of you, equip yourselves like Indra; put on great and beautiful armors. Take powerful bows and arrows, and quickly proceed on the path. (03-253-17)
पुरा हि निर्भर्त्सनदण्डमोहिता; प्रमूढचित्ता वदनेन शुष्यता। ददाति कस्मैचिदनर्हते तनुं; वराज्यपूर्णामिव भस्मनि स्रुचम् ॥०३-२५३-१८॥
Long ago, truly, deluded by reproach and punishment, with her mind confused and mouth parched, she gives her body to someone unworthy—just like offering a ladle filled with clarified butter onto ashes. (03-253-18)
पुरा तुषाग्नाविव हूयते हविः; पुरा श्मशाने स्रगिवापविध्यते। पुरा च सोमोऽध्वरगोऽवलिह्यते; शुना यथा विप्रजने प्रमोहिते ॥ महत्यरण्ये मृगयां चरित्वा; पुरा शृगालो नलिनीं विगाहते ॥०३-२५३-१९॥
Once, an offering is poured into the chaff-fire; once, a garland is discarded in the cremation ground. Previously, even the Soma meant for sacrifice is licked up by a dog when people are confused. After a great hunt in the forest, the jackal, in earlier times, enters the lotus pond. (03-253-19)
मा वः प्रियायाः सुनसं सुलोचनं; चन्द्रप्रभाच्छं वदनं प्रसन्नम्। स्पृश्याच्छुभं कश्चिदकृत्यकारी; श्वा वै पुरोडाशमिवोपयुङ्क्षीत् ॥ एतानि वर्त्मान्यनुयात शीघ्रं; मा वः कालः क्षिप्रमिहात्यगाद्वै ॥०३-२५३-२०॥
Let not an evil-doer touch the lovely-nosed, beautiful-eyed, moon-bright and pleasant face of your beloved, as a dog would consume the sacrificial cake. Follow these paths quickly; do not let your time here pass swiftly. (03-253-20)
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥
Yudhiṣṭhira said.
भद्रे तूष्णीमास्स्व नियच्छ वाचं; मास्मत्सकाशे परुषाण्यवोचः। राजानो वा यदि वा राजपुत्रा; बलेन मत्ता वञ्चनां प्राप्नुवन्ति ॥०३-२५३-२१॥
O gentle lady, be silent, restrain your speech; do not speak harshly in our presence. Kings or princes, intoxicated by power, achieve deception. (03-253-21)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
एतावदुक्त्वा प्रययुर्हि शीघ्रं; तान्येव वर्त्मान्यनुवर्तमानाः। मुहुर्मुहुर्व्यालवदुच्छ्वसन्तो; ज्यां विक्षिपन्तश्च महाधनुर्भ्यः ॥०३-२५३-२२॥
After having said this much, they quickly set out, following exactly those paths, and again and again, like serpents breathing out, they sounded the bowstrings of their mighty bows. (03-253-22)
ततोऽपश्यंस्तस्य सैन्यस्य रेणु; मुद्धूतं वै वाजिखुरप्रणुन्नम्। पदातीनां मध्यगतं च धौम्यं; विक्रोशन्तं भीममभिद्रवेति ॥०३-२५३-२३॥
Then I saw the dust of his army, indeed raised by the hoofbeats of the horses. In the midst of the foot soldiers was Dhaumya, shouting, 'Bhīma, charge!' (03-253-23)
ते सान्त्व्य धौम्यं परिदीनसत्त्वाः; सुखं भवानेत्विति राजपुत्राः। श्येना यथैवामिषसम्प्रयुक्ता; जवेन तत्सैन्यमथाभ्यधावन् ॥०३-२५३-२४॥
The princes, after consoling Dhaumya with their distressed hearts, said, "Go safely, O revered one." Then, just as kites urged by the desire for flesh, they swiftly rushed against that army. (03-253-24)
तेषां महेन्द्रोपमविक्रमाणां; संरब्धानां धर्षणाद्याज्ञसेन्याः। क्रोधः प्रजज्वाल जयद्रथं च; दृष्ट्वा प्रियां तस्य रथे स्थितां च ॥०३-२५३-२५॥
Among them, whose valor was equal to Indra and who were enraged by the outrage upon Draupadi, anger blazed at Jayadratha as they saw their beloved standing upon his chariot. (03-253-25)
प्रचुक्रुशुश्चाप्यथ सिन्धुराजं; वृकोदरश्चैव धनञ्जयश्च। यमौ च राजा च महाधनुर्धरा; स्ततो दिशः संमुमुहुः परेषाम् ॥०३-२५३-२६॥
Then, the king of elephants cried out; Vṛkodara (Bhīma), Dhanañjaya (Arjuna), the twin sons of Yama (Nakula and Sahadeva), and the king (Yudhishthira), all great bowmen, shouted, and thus the directions of the enemy became confused. (03-253-26)
