द्रौपद्युवाच॥
Draupadī said.
अशोच्यं नु कुतस्तस्या यस्या भर्ता युधिष्ठिरः। जानन्सर्वाणि दुःखानि किं मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि ॥०४-१७-१॥
How can she, whose husband is Yudhishthira, be considered one who deserves grief? Since you know all sorrows, why do you ask me?
यन्मां दासीप्रवादेन प्रातिकामी तदानयत्। सभायां पार्षदो मध्ये तन्मां दहति भारत ॥०४-१७-२॥
O Bhārata, that which Prātikāmī brought me with the label of 'slave-woman' into the assembly before the attendants, that burns me (with shame), O Bhārata. (04-17-2)
पार्थिवस्य सुता नाम का नु जीवेत मादृशी। अनुभूय भृशं दुःखमन्यत्र द्रौपदीं प्रभो ॥०४-१७-३॥
O lord, which daughter of a king, called such, would still live after experiencing such great suffering like I have, except Draupadī? (04-17-3)
वनवासगतायाश्च सैन्धवेन दुरात्मना। परामर्शं द्वितीयं च सोढुमुत्सहते नु का ॥०४-१७-४॥
Which woman who has gone to the forest could endure a second touch by the evil-minded Sindhu prince? (04-17-4)
मत्स्यराज्ञः समक्षं च तस्य धूर्तस्य पश्यतः। कीचकेन पदा स्पृष्टा का नु जीवेत मादृशी ॥०४-१७-५॥
Which woman, having been touched with the foot by Kīcaka in the presence of the king of Matsya and that rogue watching, could possibly survive being like me? (04-17-5)
एवं बहुविधैः क्लेशैः क्लिश्यमानां च भारत। न मां जानासि कौन्तेय किं फलं जीवितेन मे ॥०४-१७-६॥
O Bhārata, thus afflicted by many kinds of sufferings, you do not know me, O son of Kunti, what is the benefit of my life. (04-17-6)
योऽयं राज्ञो विराटस्य कीचको नाम भारत। सेनानीः पुरुषव्याघ्र स्यालः परमदुर्मतिः ॥०४-१७-७॥
O Bhārata, this Kīcaka, named as such, is the commander of King Virāṭa, a tiger among men, brother-in-law, and of exceedingly evil mind. (4-17-7)
स मां सैरन्ध्रिवेषेण वसन्तीं राजवेश्मनि। नित्यमेवाह दुष्टात्मा भार्या मम भवेति वै ॥०४-१७-८॥
He, the wicked-minded one, always said to me, as I dwelt in the guise of a maidservant in the king's palace, "Be my wife". (04-17-8)
तेनोपमन्त्र्यमाणाया वधार्हेण सपत्नहन्। कालेनेव फलं पक्वं हृदयं मे विदीर्यते ॥०४-१७-९॥
My heart is torn asunder by him, the destroyer of rivals, who, deserving death, secretly persuaded me—just as a ripe fruit is split open by time. (04-17-9)
भ्रातरं च विगर्हस्व ज्येष्ठं दुर्द्यूतदेविनम्। यस्यास्मि कर्मणा प्राप्ता दुःखमेतदनन्तकम् ॥०४-१७-१०॥
And censure your elder brother, who is addicted to evil gambling, by whose actions I have come to this endless suffering. (04-17-10)
को हि राज्यं परित्यज्य सर्वस्वं चात्मना सह। प्रव्रज्यायैव दीव्येत विना दुर्द्यूतदेविनम् ॥०४-१७-११॥
Who indeed would abandon his kingdom and all wealth, together with himself, and set out for renunciation, except for the evil dice-god? (04-17-11)
यदि निष्कसहस्रेण यच्चान्यत्सारवद्धनम्। सायम्प्रातरदेविष्यदपि संवत्सरान्बहून् ॥०४-१७-१२॥
If, even with a thousand gold coins and other substantial wealth, he would not wish for it in the evening and morning, even for many years. (4-17-12)
रुक्मं हिरण्यं वासांसि यानं युग्यमजाविकम्। अश्वाश्वतरसङ्घांश्च न जातु क्षयमावहेत् ॥०४-१७-१३॥
Golden objects, gold, garments, vehicles, sheep and goats for yoking, and groups of horses and mules — never should bring about any loss. (4-17-13)
सोऽयं द्यूतप्रवादेन श्रिया प्रत्यवरोपितः। तूष्णीमास्ते यथा मूढः स्वानि कर्माणि चिन्तयन् ॥०४-१७-१४॥
He, having been degraded in fame due to the charge of gambling and robbed of his prosperity, sits silently like one bewildered, reflecting upon his own deeds. (04-17-14)
दश नागसहस्राणि पद्मिनां हेममालिनाम्। यं यान्तमनुयान्तीह सोऽयं द्यूतेन जीवति ॥०४-१७-१५॥
He—whom, as he departs, ten thousand lotus-marked elephants adorned with golden garlands follow here—this man lives by gambling. (04-17-15)
तथा शतसहस्राणि नृणाममिततेजसाम्। उपासते महाराजमिन्द्रप्रस्थे युधिष्ठिरम् ॥०४-१७-१६॥
In this way, hundreds of thousands of valiant men serve the great king Yudhishthira in Indraprastha. (04-17-16)
शतं दासीसहस्राणि यस्य नित्यं महानसे। पात्रीहस्तं दिवारात्रमतिथीन्भोजयन्त्युत ॥०४-१७-१७॥
In whose kitchen, always, a hundred thousand female servants continually feed guests day and night with vessels in hand, indeed. (04-17-17)
एष निष्कसहस्राणि प्रदाय ददतां वरः। द्यूतजेन ह्यनर्थेन महता समुपावृतः ॥०४-१७-१८॥
This one, having given thousands of gold coins, best among givers, has truly been overcome by the great misfortune caused by gambling. (04-17-18)
एनं हि स्वरसम्पन्ना बहवः सूतमागधाः। सायम्प्रातरुपातिष्ठन्सुमृष्टमणिकुण्डलाः ॥०४-१७-१९॥
Many bards and panegyrists endowed with melodious voices, adorned with polished gem earrings, indeed attended him every evening and morning. (04-17-19)
सहस्रमृषयो यस्य नित्यमासन्सभासदः। तपःश्रुतोपसम्पन्नाः सर्वकामैरुपस्थिताः ॥०४-१७-२०॥
A thousand sages, who were always members of his assembly, endowed with austerity and learning, present with every desired object. (04-17-20)
अन्धान्वृद्धांस्तथानाथान्सर्वान्राष्ट्रेषु दुर्गतान्। बिभर्त्यविमना नित्यमानृशंस्याद्युधिष्ठिरः ॥०४-१७-२१॥
Yudhishthira, always out of compassion, supports all the blind, aged, destitute, and afflicted throughout the kingdoms with an unwavering mind. (04-17-21)
स एष निरयं प्राप्तो मत्स्यस्य परिचारकः। सभायां देविता राज्ञः कङ्को ब्रूते युधिष्ठिरः ॥०४-१७-२२॥
He, this attendant of Matsya, having attained hell, in the assembly, having become Kaṅka the king's courtier, is called Yudhishthira. (04-17-22)
इन्द्रप्रस्थे निवसतः समये यस्य पार्थिवाः। आसन्बलिभृतः सर्वे सोऽद्यान्यैर्भृतिमिच्छति ॥०४-१७-२३॥
While he dwelled in Indraprastha, all the kings were his tribute-payers; now, he seeks support from others. (04-17-23)
पार्थिवाः पृथिवीपाला यस्यासन्वशवर्तिनः। स वशे विवशो राजा परेषामद्य वर्तते ॥०४-१७-२४॥
The kings, the lords of the earth, who were once obedient to him, today that very king now remains helplessly under the control of others. (04-17-24)
प्रताप्य पृथिवीं सर्वां रश्मिवानिव तेजसा। सोऽयं राज्ञो विराटस्य सभास्तारो युधिष्ठिरः ॥०४-१७-२५॥
After illuminating the whole earth with his brilliance like the sun, this Yudhiṣṭhira is the star of King Virāṭa's assembly. (04-17-25)
यमुपासन्त राजानः सभायामृषिभिः सह। तमुपासीनमद्यान्यं पश्य पाण्डव पाण्डवम् ॥०४-१७-२६॥
O Pāṇḍava, see that Pāṇḍava, who was once approached in the assembly by kings together with sages, now seated here as another today. (04-17-26)
अतदर्हं महाप्राज्ञं जीवितार्थेऽभिसंश्रितम्। दृष्ट्वा कस्य न दुःखं स्याद्धर्मात्मानं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥०४-१७-२७॥
Who would not feel sorrow, seeing the greatly wise and righteous Yudhiṣṭhira—unworthy of this state—having taken refuge for the sake of his life? (04-17-27)
उपास्ते स्म सभायां यं कृत्स्ना वीर वसुन्धरा। तमुपासीनमद्यान्यं पश्य भारत भारतम् ॥०४-१७-२८॥
O Bharata, see today that other, seated here, whom the whole earth, O hero, worships in the assembly. (04-17-28)
एवं बहुविधैर्दुःखैः पीड्यमानामनाथवत्। शोकसागरमध्यस्थां किं मां भीम न पश्यसि ॥०४-१७-२९॥
O Bhīma, afflicted by various sufferings, like one without a protector, situated in the midst of the ocean of grief, why do you not see me? (04-17-29)
