Draupadī said.
इदं तु मे महद्दुःखं यत्प्रवक्ष्यामि भारत। न मेऽभ्यसूया कर्तव्या दुःखादेतद्ब्रवीम्यहम् ॥०४-१८-१॥
idaṁ tu me mahadduḥkhaṁ yatpravakṣyāmi bhārata। na me'bhyasūyā kartavyā duḥkhādetadbravīmyaham ॥04-18-1॥
[इदं (idaṁ) - this; तु (tu) - but; मे (me) - for me; महत्-दुःखं (mahat-duḥkhaṁ) - great sorrow; यत्-प्रवक्ष्यामि (yat-pravakṣyāmi) - which I will declare; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; न (na) - not; मे (me) - by me; अभ्यसूया (abhyasūyā) - envy; कर्तव्या (kartavyā) - should be (done); दुःखात् (duḥkhāt) - from sorrow; एतत्-ब्रवीमि-अहम् (etat-bravīmi-aham) - this I (am) speaking;]
(This but for me great sorrow which I will declare, O Bhārata; not by me envy should be; from sorrow this I am speaking.)
But this is great sorrow for me, which I am about to declare, O Bhārata. You should not find fault with me; I speak this out of sorrow. (04-18-1)
शार्दूलैर्महिषैः सिंहैरागारे युध्यसे यदा। कैकेय्याः प्रेक्षमाणायास्तदा मे कश्मलो भवेत् ॥०४-१८-२॥
śārdūlair mahiṣaiḥ siṃhair āgāre yudhyase yadā। kaikeyyāḥ prekṣamāṇāyās tadā me kaśmalo bhavet ॥04-18-2॥
[शार्दूलैः (śārdūlaiḥ) - with tigers; महिषैः (mahiṣaiḥ) - with buffaloes; सिंहैः (siṃhaiḥ) - with lions; आगारे (āgāre) - in (the) cage; युध्यसे (yudhyase) - you fight; यदा (yadā) - when; कैकेय्याः (kaikeyyāḥ) - of Kaikeyi (the queen); प्रेक्षमाणायाः (prekṣamāṇāyāḥ) - looking (on); तदा (tadā) - then; मे (me) - to me; कश्मलः (kaśmalaḥ) - confusion; भवेत् (bhavet) - would arise;]
(With tigers, with buffaloes, with lions, in the cage you fight when; of Kaikeyi looking on, then to me confusion would arise.)
When you fight with tigers, buffaloes, and lions in the cage while Kaikeyi is watching, then confusion would arise in me. (04-18-2)
प्रेक्षासमुत्थिता चापि कैकेयी ताः स्त्रियो वदेत्। प्रेक्ष्य मामनवद्याङ्गी कश्मलोपहतामिव ॥०४-१८-३॥
prekṣāsamutthitā cāpi kaikeyī tāḥ striyo vadet। prekṣya mām anavadyāṅgī kaśmalopahatām iva ॥04-18-3॥
[प्रेक्षा (prekṣā) - looking; vision; समुत्थिता (samutthitā) - having risen; arisen; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; कैकेयी (kaikeyī) - Kaikeyi (proper noun); ताः (tāḥ) - those; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; वदेत् (vadet) - may say; would speak; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - having seen; after seeing; माम् (mām) - me; अनवद्याङ्गी (anavadyāṅgī) - faultless-bodied; flawless-limbed; कश्मलोपहताम् (kaśmalopahatām) - overcome by faintness; afflicted by faintness; इव (iva) - like; as if;]
(Having arisen from looking, and also Kaikeyi would say to those women, having seen me, the faultless-bodied, as if overcome by faintness.)
Kaikeyi, having stood up watching, would also say to those women, seeing me, faultless in form, as if overcome by faintness. (04-18-3)
स्नेहात्संवासजान्मन्ये सूदमेषा शुचिस्मिता। योध्यमानं महावीर्यैरिमं समनुशोचति ॥०४-१८-४॥
snehāt-saṁvāsajānmanye sūdam-eṣā śucismitā। yodhyamānaṁ mahāvīryair-imaṁ samanuśocati ॥04-18-4॥
[स्नेहात् (snehāt) - from affection; संवासजात् (saṁvāsajāt) - arising from cohabitation; मन्ये (manye) - I think; सूदम् (sūdam) - for the cook (Sūda, proper noun); एषा (eṣā) - she; शुचिस्मिता (śucismitā) - having a pure smile; योध्यमानम् (yodhyamānam) - he who is being fought; महावीर्यैः (mahāvīryaiḥ) - by persons of great valor; इमम् (imam) - this (man); समनुशोचति (samanuśocati) - truly grieves for;]
(From affection arising from cohabitation, I think, for the cook, this pure-smiling woman truly grieves for this (man) who is being fought by persons of great valor.)
I think that, because of affection arising from living together, this pure-smiling woman truly grieves for the cook who is being attacked by these men of great valor. (04-18-4)
कल्याणरूपा सैरन्ध्री बल्लवश्चातिसुन्दरः। स्त्रीणां च चित्तं दुर्ज्ञेयं युक्तरूपौ च मे मतौ ॥०४-१८-५॥
kalyāṇarūpā sairandhrī ballavaś cātisundaraḥ। strīṇāṃ ca cittaṃ durjñeyaṃ yuktarūpau ca me matau॥04-18-5॥
[कल्याणरूपा (kalyāṇarūpā) - auspicious-formed; सैरन्ध्री (sairandhrī) - Sairandhrī (name of a woman attendant); बल्लवः (ballavaḥ) - Ballava (name of a cowherd); च (ca) - and; अतिसुन्दरः (atisundaraḥ) - very beautiful; स्त्रीणां (strīṇāṃ) - of women; च (ca) - and; चित्तं (cittaṃ) - mind; दुर्ज्ञेयम् (durjñeyam) - difficult to know; युक्तरूपौ (yuktarūpau) - properly formed (two, dual); च (ca) - and; मे (me) - in my; मतौ (matau) - opinion;]
(Auspicious-formed Sairandhrī and Ballava very beautiful; of women also mind difficult to know; the two properly formed also in my opinion.)
Sairandhrī, who is of auspicious form, and Ballava, who is very handsome, both are well-formed; moreover, the minds of women are difficult to know—such is my opinion. (04-18-5)
सैरन्ध्री प्रियसंवासान्नित्यं करुणवेदिनी। अस्मिन्राजकुले चेमौ तुल्यकालनिवासिनौ ॥०४-१८-६॥
sairandhrī priyasaṁvāsānnityaṁ karuṇavedinī। asminrājakule cemau tulyakālanivāsinau ॥04-18-6॥
[सैरन्ध्री (sairandhrī) - Sairandhrī (Draupadī in disguise); प्रियसंवासात् (priyasaṁvāsāt) - from living together with the beloved; नित्यं (nityaṁ) - always; करुणवेदिनी (karuṇavedinī) - knowing compassion; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; राजकुले (rājakule) - royal household; च (ca) - and; इमौ (imau) - these two; तुल्यकालनिवासिनौ (tulyakālanivāsinau) - living for the same period of time;]
(Sairandhrī, from living always with the beloved, knowing compassion; in this royal household, and these two, living for the same period of time.)
Sairandhrī, always tender from loving companionship, is compassionate; and these two reside in this royal household for the same period of time. (04-18-6)
इति ब्रुवाणा वाक्यानि सा मां नित्यमवेदयत्। क्रुध्यन्तीं मां च सम्प्रेक्ष्य समशङ्कत मां त्वयि ॥०४-१८-७॥
iti bruvāṇā vākyāni sā māṁ nityam avedayat। krudhyantīṁ māṁ ca samprekṣya samaśaṅkata māṁ tvayi ॥04-18-7॥
[इति (iti) - thus; ब्रुवाणा (bruvāṇā) - speaking; वाक्यानि (vākyāni) - statements; सा (sā) - she; माम् (mām) - me; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; अवेदयत् (avedayat) - informed; क्रुध्यन्तीम् (krudhyantīm) - angry; माम् (mām) - me; च (ca) - and; सम्प्रेक्ष्य (samprekṣya) - having observed; समशङ्कत (samaśaṅkata) - became suspicious; माम् (mām) - me; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you;]
(Thus, speaking statements, she always informed me. Having seen me angry, she also became suspicious of me in you.)
Thus, while speaking, she always used to inform me of her statements. Observing me in anger, she also suspected me in regard to you. (04-18-7)
तस्यां तथा ब्रुवत्यां तु दुःखं मां महदाविशत्। शोके यौधिष्ठिरे मग्ना नाहं जीवितुमुत्सहे ॥०४-१८-८॥
tasyāṁ tathā bruvatyāṁ tu duḥkhaṁ māṁ mahad āviśat। śoke yauḍhiṣṭhire magnā nāhaṁ jīvitum utsahe ॥04-18-8॥
[तस्यां (tasyām) - in her; तथा (tathā) - thus; ब्रुवत्याम् (bruvatyām) - while speaking; तु (tu) - but; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - sorrow; माम् (mām) - me; महत् (mahat) - great; आविशत् (āviśat) - entered; शोके (śoke) - in grief; यौधिष्ठिरे (yauḍhiṣṭhire) - about Yudhiṣṭhira; मग्ना (magnā) - immersed; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live; उत्सहे (utsahe) - am capable;]
(In her thus speaking, but great sorrow entered me. Immersed in grief about Yudhiṣṭhira, not I am capable to live.)
As she was thus speaking, great sorrow entered me. Immersed in grief for Yudhiṣṭhira, I am no longer able to live. (04-18-8)
यः सदेवान्मनुष्यांश्च सर्पांश्चैकरथोऽजयत्। सोऽयं राज्ञो विराटस्य कन्यानां नर्तको युवा ॥०४-१८-९॥
yaḥ sadevānmanuṣyāṁś ca sarpāṁś caikaratho'jayat। so'yaṁ rājño virāṭasya kanyānāṁ nartako yuvā॥04-18-9॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; सदेवान् (sadevān) - with the gods; मनुष्यांश् (manuṣyāṁś) - men; च (ca) - and; सर्पांश् (sarpāṁś) - serpents; च (ca) - and; एकरथः (ekarathaḥ) - with a single chariot; अजयत् (ajayat) - conquered; सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; विराटस्य (virāṭasya) - Virāṭa's; कन्यानाम् (kanyānām) - of the maidens; नर्तकः (nartakaḥ) - dancer; युवा (yuvā) - young man;]
(Who, with the gods, men, and serpents, with a single chariot, conquered; he, this, of the king (Virāṭa), of the maidens, dancer, young man.)
He who, with a single chariot, conquered gods, men, and serpents, he is now the young dancer of the maidens of King Virāṭa. (04-18-9)
योऽतर्पयदमेयात्मा खाण्डवे जातवेदसम्। सोऽन्तःपुरगतः पार्थः कूपेऽग्निरिव संवृतः ॥०४-१८-१०॥
yo'tarpayad ameyātmā khāṇḍave jātavedasam। so'ntaḥpuragataḥ pārthaḥ kūpe'gnir iva saṁvṛtaḥ॥04-18-10॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; अतर्पयत् (atarpayat) - did not satisfy; अमेयात्मा (ameyātmā) - of unfathomable nature; खाण्डवे (khāṇḍave) - in Khāṇḍava; जातवेदसम् (jātavedasam) - the fire (Agni); सः (saḥ) - he; अन्तःपुरगतः (antaḥpuragataḥ) - one who has gone into the inner apartments; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Pārtha (Arjuna); कूपे (kūpe) - in a well; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; इव (iva) - like; संवृतः (saṁvṛtaḥ) - covered;]
(Who did not satisfy the fire of unfathomable nature in Khāṇḍava, he, the Pārtha who has gone into the inner apartments, is covered like a fire in a well.)
He who did not satisfy the unfathomable fire in Khāṇḍava, that Pārtha, having entered the inner chambers, is concealed like fire covered in a well. (04-18-10)
यस्माद्भयममित्राणां सदैव पुरुषर्षभात्। स लोकपरिभूतेन वेषेणास्ते धनञ्जयः ॥०४-१८-११॥
yasmādbhayamamitrāṇāṃ sadaiva puruṣarṣabhāt। sa lokaparibhūtena veṣeṇāste dhanañjayaḥ॥04-18-11॥
[यस्मात् (yasmāt) - from whom; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; अमित्राणां (amitrāṇām) - of enemies; सदैव (sadaiva) - always; पुरुषर्षभात् (puruṣarṣabhāt) - from the bull among men; सः (saḥ) - he; लोकपरिभूतेन (lokaparibhūtena) - by a disgraceful to the world; वेषेण (veṣeṇa) - by attire; आस्ते (āste) - remains; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhananjaya (Arjuna);]
(From whom fear of enemies always (arises), from the bull among men, he by a disgraceful to the world attire remains, Dhananjaya.)
Dhananjaya, from whom enemies always fear as he is the best among men, now remains wearing an attire that is a disgrace in the eyes of the world. (04-18-11)
यस्य ज्यातलनिर्घोषात्समकम्पन्त शत्रवः। स्त्रियो गीतस्वनं तस्य मुदिताः पर्युपासते ॥०४-१८-१२॥
yasya jyātalanirghoṣāt samakampanta śatravaḥ। striyo gītasvanaṃ tasya muditāḥ paryupāsate॥04-18-12॥
[यस्य (yasya) - whose; ज्यातलनिर्घोषात् (jyātala-nirghoṣāt) - from the twang-sound of the bowstring; स (sa) - he; मकम्पन्त (makampanta) - trembled; शत्रवः (śatravaḥ) - enemies; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; गीतस्वनं (gīta-svanam) - song sound; तस्य (tasya) - his; मुदिताः (muditāḥ) - joyful; पर्युपासते (paryupāsate) - attend upon;]
(Whose from the bowstring's twang the enemies trembled; women the song sound his joyful attend upon.)
At the sound of whose bowstring the enemies trembled, the women joyfully attend to his singing. (04-18-12)
किरीटं सूर्यसङ्काशं यस्य मूर्धनि शोभते। वेणीविकृतकेशान्तः सोऽयमद्य धनञ्जयः ॥०४-१८-१३॥
kirīṭaṃ sūryasaṅkāśaṃ yasya mūrdhani śobhate। veṇīvikṛtakeśāntaḥ so'yam adya dhanañjayaḥ ॥04-18-13॥
[किरीटं (kirīṭam) - crown; सूर्यसङ्काशं (sūryasaṅkāśam) - sun-like in splendor; यस्य (yasya) - whose; मूर्धनि (mūrdhani) - on the head; शोभते (śobhate) - shines; वेणीविकृतकेशान्तः (veṇīvikṛtakeśāntaḥ) - with hair-end bound in a braid; सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; अद्य (adya) - today; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhananjaya (Arjuna);]
(The crown sun-like in splendor whose on the head shines, with hair-end bound in a braid, he this today Dhananjaya (Arjuna).)
He, whose head shines with a sun-like crown and whose hair-ends are bound in a braid, is this Dhananjaya (Arjuna) today. (4-18-13)
यस्मिन्नस्त्राणि दिव्यानि समस्तानि महात्मनि। आधारः सर्वविद्यानां स धारयति कुण्डले ॥०४-१८-१४॥
yasminnastrāṇi divyāni samastāni mahātmani। ādhāraḥ sarvavidyānāṃ sa dhārayati kuṇḍale॥04-18-14॥
[यस्मिन् (yasmin) - in whom; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; समस्तानि (samastāni) - all; महात्मनि (mahātmani) - in the great soul; आधारः (ādhāraḥ) - support; सर्वविद्यानाम् (sarvavidyānām) - of all knowledges; सः (sa) - he; धारयति (dhārayati) - bears; कुण्डले (kuṇḍale) - in (his) earrings;]
(In whom all divine weapons, in the great soul, the support of all knowledges, he bears in (his) earrings.)
He, in whom all the divine weapons reside, the great soul, who is the support of all knowledge, bears (them) in his earrings. (04-18-14)
यं स्म राजसहस्राणि तेजसाप्रतिमानि वै। समरे नातिवर्तन्ते वेलामिव महार्णवः ॥०४-१८-१५॥
yaṃ sma rājasahasrāṇi tejasāpratimāni vai। samare nātivartante velāmiva mahārṇavaḥ ॥04-18-15॥
[यं (yaṃ) - whom; स्म (sma) - indeed; राजसहस्राणि (rājasahasrāṇi) - thousands of kings; तेजसा (tejasā) - by brilliance; अप्रतिमानि (apratimāni) - unrivaled; वै (vai) - truly; समरे (samare) - in battle; न (na) - not; अतिवर्तन्ते (ativartante) - surpass; वेलामिव (velām iva) - like the boundary; महार्णवः (mahārṇavaḥ) - great ocean;]
(Whom indeed thousands of kings, by unrivaled brilliance, truly, in battle do not surpass, like the boundary of the great ocean.)
Indeed, thousands of kings with unrivaled prowess do not cross him in battle, just as one cannot cross the boundary of the great ocean. (04-18-15)
सोऽयं राज्ञो विराटस्य कन्यानां नर्तको युवा। आस्ते वेषप्रतिच्छन्नः कन्यानां परिचारकः ॥०४-१८-१६॥
so'yaṃ rājño virāṭasya kanyānāṃ nartako yuvā। āste veṣapratichannaḥ kanyānāṃ paricārakaḥ ॥04-18-16॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; विराटस्य (virāṭasya) - of Virāṭa; कन्यानाम् (kanyānām) - of the maidens; नर्तकः (nartakaḥ) - dancer; युवा (yuvā) - young man; आस्ते (āste) - remains; वेषप्रतिच्छन्नः (veṣapratichannaḥ) - disguised in costume; कन्यानाम् (kanyānām) - of the maidens; परिचारकः (paricārakaḥ) - attendant;]
(He this king’s (Virāṭa’s) maidens’ dancer, young man, remains disguised in costume, maidens’ attendant.)
He is the young dancer among King Virāṭa’s maidens, remaining disguised in costume as an attendant of the maidens. (04-18-16)
यस्य स्म रथघोषेण समकम्पत मेदिनी। सपर्वतवना भीम सहस्थावरजङ्गमा ॥०४-१८-१७॥
yasya sma rathaghoṣeṇa samakampata medinī। s aparvatavanā bhīma sahasthāvarajaṅgamā ॥04-18-17॥
[यस्य (yasya) - of whom; स्म (sma) - indeed; रथघोषेण (rathaghoṣeṇa) - by chariot’s sound; समकम्पत (samakampata) - trembled greatly; मेदिनी (medinī) - the earth; सपर्वतवना (saparvatavanā) - with mountains and forests; भीम (bhīma) - terrible; सहस्थावरजङ्गमा (sahasthāvarajaṅgamā) - together with immobile and mobile (beings);]
(Of whom indeed, by the sound of the chariot, the earth trembled greatly, with mountains and forests, terrible, together with immobile and mobile (beings).)
Indeed, at the sound of whose chariot, the earth along with its mountains and forests, together with all that is stationary and moving, trembled terribly. (04-18-17)
यस्मिञ्जाते महाभागे कुन्त्याः शोको व्यनश्यत। स शोचयति मामद्य भीमसेन तवानुजः ॥०४-१८-१८॥
yasmiñ jāte mahābhāge kuntyāḥ śoko vyanaśyata। sa śocayati mām adya bhīmasena tav ānujaḥ॥04-18-18॥
[यस्मिन् (yasmin) - in whom; जाते (jāte) - having been born; महाभागे (mahābhāge) - O greatly fortunate one; कुन्त्याः (kuntyāḥ) - of Kuntī; शोकः (śokaḥ) - grief; वियनश्यत् (vyanaśyat) - vanished; सः (saḥ) - he; शोचयति (śocayati) - causes to grieve; माम् (mām) - me; अद्य (adya) - today; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; तव (tava) - your; अनुजः (anujaḥ) - younger brother;]
(In whom, having been born, O greatly fortunate one, Kuntī’s grief vanished; he causes me to grieve today, Bhīmasena, your younger brother.)
Bhīmasena, your younger brother, in whom Kuntī’s grief vanished upon his birth, now causes me to grieve today. (04-18-18)
भूषितं तमलङ्कारैः कुण्डलैः परिहाटकैः। कम्बुपाणिनमायान्तं दृष्ट्वा सीदति मे मनः ॥०४-१८-१९॥
bhūṣitaṁ tam alaṅkāraiḥ kuṇḍalaiḥ parihāṭakaiḥ। kambupāṇinam āyāntaṁ dṛṣṭvā sīdati me manaḥ॥04-18-19॥
[भूषितं (bhūṣitam) - adorned; तम् (tam) - him; अलङ्कारैः (alaṅkāraiḥ) - with ornaments; कुण्डलैः (kuṇḍalaiḥ) - with earrings; परिहाटकैः (parihāṭakaiḥ) - with armlets; कम्बुपाणिनम् (kambupāṇinam) - having conch-shaped hands; आयान्तम् (āyāntam) - approaching; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सीदति (sīdati) - sinks; मे (me) - my; मनः (manaḥ) - mind;]
(Adorned him with ornaments, with earrings, with armlets, having conch-shaped hands, approaching, having seen, sinks my mind.)
Seeing him adorned with ornaments, earrings, armlets, and with conch-shaped hands approaching, my mind sinks. (04-18-19)
तं वेणीकृतकेशान्तं भीमधन्वानमर्जुनम्। कन्यापरिवृतं दृष्ट्वा भीम सीदति मे मनः ॥०४-१८-२०॥
taṁ veṇīkṛtakeśāntaṁ bhīmadhanvānamarjunam. kanyāparivṛtaṁ dṛṣṭvā bhīma sīdati me manaḥ ॥04-18-20॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; वेणीकृतकेशान्तं (veṇīkṛtakeśāntam) - whose hair end is braided; भीमधन्वानम् (bhīmadhanvānam) - the one with a terrible bow; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna; कन्या (kanyā) - (by) maidens; परिवृतं (parivṛtam) - surrounded; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; भीम (bhīma) - Bhīma; सीदति (sīdati) - sinks; मे (me) - my; मनः (manaḥ) - mind;]
(Him, whose hair end is braided, possessing a terrible bow, Arjuna, surrounded by maidens, having seen, Bhīma, sinks, my mind.)
Seeing Arjuna, whose hair is braided and who wields a terrible bow, surrounded by maidens, Bhīma—my mind sinks. (04-18-20)
यदा ह्येनं परिवृतं कन्याभिर्देवरूपिणम्। प्रभिन्नमिव मातङ्गं परिकीर्णं करेणुभिः ॥०४-१८-२१॥
yadā hy enaṃ parivṛtaṃ kanyābhiḥ devarūpiṇam। prabhinnam iva mātaṅgam parikīrṇaṃ kareṇubhiḥ ॥04-18-21॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; हि (hi) - indeed; एनम् (enam) - him; परिवृतम् (parivṛtam) - surrounded; कन्याभिः (kanyābhiḥ) - by maidens; देवरूपिणम् (devarūpiṇam) - godlike in form; प्रभिन्नम् (prabhinnam) - broken; इव (iva) - as if; मातङ्गम् (mātaṅgam) - elephant; परिकीर्णम् (parikīrṇam) - scattered around; करेणुभिः (kareṇubhiḥ) - by female elephants;]
(When indeed him surrounded by maidens, godlike in form, as if a broken elephant scattered around by female elephants.)
When, indeed, he—godlike in form—was surrounded by maidens, it resembled a broken elephant scattered about by female elephants. (04-18-21)
मत्स्यमर्थपतिं पार्थं विराटं समुपस्थितम्। पश्यामि तूर्यमध्यस्थं दिशो नश्यन्ति मे तदा ॥०४-१८-२२॥
matsyam-arthapatim pārthaṁ virāṭaṁ samupasthitam। paśyāmi tūryam-adhyasthaṁ diśo naśyanti me tadā ॥04-18-22॥
[मत्स्यम् (matsyam) - the Matsya (kingdom); अर्थपतिम् (arthapatim) - the lord of wealth; (i.e., king); पार्थम् (pārtham) - the son of Pritha (Arjuna); विराटम् (virāṭam) - Virata (proper noun; name of a king); समुपस्थितम् (samupasthitam) - having approached; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; तूर्यम् (tūryam) - musical instrument; अध्यस्थम् (adhyastham) - placed on; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; नश्यन्ति (naśyanti) - are vanishing; मे (me) - for me; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(The Matsya lord (king), Arjuna, Virata, having approached, I see them placed upon the musical instrument; the directions are vanishing for me then.)
When the king of Matsya, Arjuna, and Virata approached, I saw them seated near the musical instruments; then, the directions seemed to vanish for me. (04-18-22)
नूनमार्या न जानाति कृच्छ्रं प्राप्तं धनञ्जयम्। अजातशत्रुं कौरव्यं मग्नं दुर्द्यूतदेविनम् ॥०४-१८-२३॥
nūnam āryā na jānāti kṛcchraṃ prāptaṃ dhanañjayam। ajātaśatruṃ kauravyaṃ magnaṃ durdyūta-devinam॥ 04-18-23॥
[नूनम् (nūnam) - indeed; certainly; आल्या (āryā) - the noble lady; न (na) - not; जानाति (jānāti) - knows; कृच्छ्रम् (kṛcchram) - distress; hardship; प्राप्तम् (prāptam) - having obtained; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhanañjaya (Arjuna); अजातशत्रुम् (ajātaśatrum) - Ajātaśatru (Yudhiṣṭhira); कौरव्यम् (kauravyam) - Kauravya (descendant of Kuru; Yudhiṣṭhira); मग्नम् (magnaṃ) - immersed; दुर्द्यूतदेविनम् (durdyūta-devinam) - afflicted by a terrible dice-game;]
(Indeed the noble lady does not know Dhanañjaya, who has met with hardship; Ajātaśatru, the Kauravya, immersed, afflicted by a terrible dice-game.)
Indeed, the noble lady does not know that Dhanañjaya (Arjuna) has faced hardship, and that Ajātaśatru (Yudhiṣṭhira), the Kauravya, is immersed in distress caused by the terrible dice-game. (04-18-23)
तथा दृष्ट्वा यवीयांसं सहदेवं युधां पतिम्। गोषु गोवेषमायान्तं पाण्डुभूतास्मि भारत ॥०४-१८-२४॥
tathā dṛṣṭvā yavīyāṁsaṁ sahadevaṁ yudhāṁ patim। goṣu goveṣam āyāntaṁ pāṇḍubhūtāsmi bhārata॥04-18-24॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; यवीयांसम् (yavīyāṁsam) - younger; सहदेवम् (sahadevam) - Sahadeva; युधाम् (yudhām) - of battles; पतिम् (patim) - lord; गोषु (goṣu) - among cows; गो-वेषम् (go-veṣam) - in cow’s form; आयान्तम् (āyāntam) - approaching; पाण्डु-भूत-अस्मि (pāṇḍu-bhūta-asmi) - I have become pale; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(Thus, having seen the younger Sahadeva, the lord of battles, among cows, in cow’s form, approaching, I have become pale, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, thus, having seen the younger Sahadeva, lord of battles, approaching among the cows in the form of a cow, I have become pale. (04-18-24)
सहदेवस्य वृत्तानि चिन्तयन्ती पुनः पुनः। न विन्दामि महाबाहो सहदेवस्य दुष्कृतम् ॥ यस्मिन्नेवंविधं दुःखं प्राप्नुयात्सत्यविक्रमः ॥०४-१८-२५॥
sahadevasya vṛttāni cintayantī punaḥ punaḥ। na vindāmi mahābāho sahadevasya duṣkṛtam ॥ yasminnevaṁ-vidhaṁ duḥkhaṁ prāpnuyāt satyavikramaḥ ॥04-18-25॥
[सहदेवस्य (sahadevasya) - of Sahadeva; वृत्तानि (vṛttāni) - deeds; acts; चिन्तयन्ती (cintayantī) - contemplating; thinking; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; न (na) - not; विन्दामि (vindāmi) - I find; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; सहदेवस्य (sahadevasya) - of Sahadeva; दुष्कृतम् (duṣkṛtam) - wrongdoing; misdeed; यस्मिन् (yasmin) - in whom; एवंविधम् (evaṁ-vidham) - such; of this kind; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - suffering; pain; प्राप्नुयात् (prāpnuyāt) - might obtain; might incur; सत्यविक्रमः (satyavikramaḥ) - he of true valour; the truthful and brave one;]
(Of Sahadeva deeds contemplating again and again, not I find, O mighty-armed, of Sahadeva wrongdoing. In whom such suffering might obtain, he of true valour.)
Contemplating the deeds of Sahadeva again and again, O mighty-armed one, I do not find any wrongdoing of Sahadeva, for one of true valour to incur such suffering. (04-18-25)
दूयामि भरतश्रेष्ठ दृष्ट्वा ते भ्रातरं प्रियम्। गोषु गोवृषसङ्काशं मत्स्येनाभिनिवेशितम् ॥०४-१८-२६॥
dūyāmi bharataśreṣṭha dṛṣṭvā te bhrātaraṃ priyam. goṣu govṛṣasaṅkāśaṃ matsyenābhiniveśitam ॥04-18-26॥
[दूयामि (dūyāmi) - I am pained; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; ते (te) - your; भ्रातरं (bhrātaraṃ) - brother; प्रियं (priyam) - dear; गोषु (goṣu) - in the herd of cows; गोवृषसङ्काशं (govṛṣasaṅkāśam) - resembling a bull; मत्स्येन (matsyena) - by a fish; अभिनिवेशितम् (abhiniveśitam) - attacked;]
(I am pained, O best of the Bharatas, having seen your dear brother, resembling a bull among cows, attacked by a fish.)

संरब्धं रक्तनेपथ्यं गोपालानां पुरोगमम्। विराटमभिनन्दन्तमथ मे भवति ज्वरः ॥०४-१८-२७॥
saṁrabdhaṁ raktanepathyaṁ gopālānāṁ purogamam। virāṭam abhinandantam atha me bhavati jvaraḥ ॥04-18-27॥
[संरब्धं (saṁrabdham) - inflamed; रक्तनेपथ्यं (raktanepathyaṁ) - with red raiment; गोपालानां (gopālānāṁ) - of the cowherds; पुरोगमम् (purogamam) - leading; विराटम् (virāṭam) - the mighty; अभिनन्दन्तम् (abhinandantam) - rejoicing in; अथ (atha) - then; मे (me) - to me; भवति (bhavati) - arises; ज्वरः (jvaraḥ) - fever;]
(Inflamed, with red raiment, of the cowherds leading, the mighty, rejoicing in, then to me arises fever.)
When I see the mighty leader of the cowherds, clothed in red and rejoicing, then fever arises in me. (04-18-27)
सहदेवं हि मे वीरं नित्यमार्या प्रशंसति। महाभिजनसम्पन्नो वृत्तवाञ्शीलवानिति ॥०४-१८-२८॥
sahadevaṁ hi me vīraṁ nityamāryā praśaṁsati। mahābhijanasampanno vṛttavānśīlavāniti ॥04-18-28॥

(Sahadeva indeed to me hero always the noble lady praises. Endowed with great lineage, of good conduct, virtuous—thus.)
Indeed, the noble lady always praises Sahadeva, my heroic son, saying he is endowed with great lineage, possesses good conduct, and is virtuous. (04-18-28)
ह्रीनिषेधो मधुरवाग्धार्मिकश्च प्रियश्च मे। स तेऽरण्येषु बोद्धव्यो याज्ञसेनि क्षपास्वपि ॥०४-१८-२९॥
hrīniṣedho madhuravāgdhārmikaś ca priyaś ca me। sa te'raṇyeṣu boddhavyo yājñaseni kṣapāsv api ॥04-18-29॥
[ह्री-निषेधः (hrī-niṣedhaḥ) - shame-refusal; (refusal due to modesty;) मधुर-वाक्-धार्मिकः (madhura-vāk-dhārmikaḥ) - sweet-speech-righteous; (righteous with sweet words;) च (ca) - and; प्रियः (priyaḥ) - dear; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - to me; सः (saḥ) - he; ते (te) - to you; अरण्येषु (araṇyeṣu) - in the forests; बोद्धव्यः (boddhavyaḥ) - is to be understood; याज्ञसेनि (yājñaseni) - O Yajñaseni; क्षपासु (kṣapāsu) - in the nights; अपि (api) - also;]
(Shame-refusal, righteous with sweet speech, and dear to me; he, to you, in the forests, is to be understood, O Yajñaseni, in the nights also.)
Shame-based refusal, righteousness with sweet words, and what is dear to me—these, O Yajñaseni, you should understand to apply even in the forests during the night as well. (04-18-29)
तं दृष्ट्वा व्यापृतं गोषु वत्सचर्मक्षपाशयम्। सहदेवं युधां श्रेष्ठं किं नु जीवामि पाण्डव ॥०४-१८-३०॥
taṃ dṛṣṭvā vyāpṛtaṃ goṣu vatsacarmakṣapāśayam | sahadevaṃ yudhāṃ śreṣṭhaṃ kiṃ nu jīvāmi pāṇḍava ॥04-18-30॥

(Having seen him engaged among cows, using calf-hide as a bed at night, Sahadeva, best of warriors—why indeed do I, Pāṇḍava, live?)
O Pāṇḍava, upon seeing Sahadeva, the best of warriors, occupied among cows and resting at night on calf-hide, why indeed do I continue to live? (04-18-30)
यस्त्रिभिर्नित्यसम्पन्नो रूपेणास्त्रेण मेधया। सोऽश्वबन्धो विराटस्य पश्य कालस्य पर्ययम् ॥०४-१८-३१॥
yastribhirnityasampanno rūpeṇāstreṇa medhayā। so'śvabandho virāṭasya paśya kālasya paryayam ॥04-18-31॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; त्रिभिः (tribhiḥ) - by three; नित्यसम्पन्नः (nityasampannaḥ) - constantly endowed; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - by form; अस्त्रेण (astreṇa) - by weapon; मेधया (medhayā) - by intelligence; सः (saḥ) - he; अश्वबन्धः (aśvabandhaḥ) - Aśvabandha (name); विराटस्य (virāṭasya) - of Virāṭa; पश्य (paśya) - see; कालस्य (kālasya) - of time; पर्ययम् (paryayam) - cycle;]
(Who, by three, constantly endowed, by form, by weapon, by intelligence, he, Aśvabandha, of Virāṭa, see the cycle of time.)
He who is constantly endowed with three—form, weapon, and intelligence—that Aśvabandha of Virāṭa, behold the turning of time. (04-18-31)
अभ्यकीर्यन्त वृन्दानि दामग्रन्थिमुदीक्षताम्। विनयन्तं जवेनाश्वान्महाराजस्य पश्यतः ॥०४-१८-३२॥
abhyakīryanta vṛndāni dāmagranthimudīkṣatām। vinayantaṃ javenāśvānmahārājasya paśyataḥ ॥04-18-32॥
[अभ्यकीर्यन्त (abhyakīryanta) - were scattered towards; वृन्दानि (vṛndāni) - groups; दामग्रन्थिम् (dāmagranthim) - rope-knot; उदीक्षताम् (udīkṣatām) - while watching; विनयन्तम् (vinayantam) - guiding; जवेन् (javen) - with speed; अश्वान् (aśvān) - horses; महाराजस्य (mahārājasya) - of the great king; पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - while seeing;]
(Groups were scattered towards (the one) watching the rope-knot, guiding the horses with speed, while the great king was seeing.)
The groups scattered towards the one watching the rope-knot, who was guiding the horses swiftly, as the great king looked on. (04-18-32)
अपश्यमेनं श्रीमन्तं मत्स्यं भ्राजिष्णुमुत्तमम्। विराटमुपतिष्ठन्तं दर्शयन्तं च वाजिनः ॥०४-१८-३३॥
apaśyam enaṃ śrīmantam matsyaṃ bhrājiṣṇum uttamam। virāṭam upatiṣṭhantam darśayantaṃ ca vājinaḥ ॥04-18-33॥
[अपश्यम् (apaśyam) - I saw; एनम् (enaṃ) - this; श्रीमन्तम् (śrīmantam) - endowed with splendor; मत्स्यम् (matsyam) - fish; भ्राजिष्णुम् (bhrājiṣṇum) - shining; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; विराटम् (virāṭam) - vast; उपतिष्ठन्तम् (upatiṣṭhantam) - standing near; दर्शयन्तम् (darśayantam) - showing; च (ca) - and; वाजिनः (vājinaḥ) - horses;]
(I saw this fish endowed with splendor, shining, excellent, vast, standing near, and showing the horses.)
I saw this splendid fish, shining and excellent, vast in form, standing near and displaying the horses. (04-18-33)
किं नु मां मन्यसे पार्थ सुखितेति परन्तप। एवं दुःखशताविष्टा युधिष्ठिरनिमित्ततः ॥०४-१८-३४॥
kiṃ nu māṃ manyase pārtha sukhiteti parantapa। evaṃ duḥkhaśatāviṣṭā yudhiṣṭhiranimittataḥ ॥04-18-34॥
[किं (kiṃ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; मां (mām) - me; मन्यसे (manyase) - do you consider; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; सुखितेति (sukhiteti) - happy (sukhita) thus (iti); परन्तप (parantapa) - O subduer of foes; एवम् (evam) - thus; दुःखशताविष्टा (duḥkhaśatāviṣṭā) - afflicted by hundreds of sorrows; युधिष्ठिरनिमित्ततः (yudhiṣṭhiranimittataḥ) - because of Yudhishthira;]
(What indeed me do you consider, O Pārtha, as happy thus, O subduer of foes? Thus, afflicted by hundreds of sorrows, because of Yudhishthira.)
O Pārtha, do you indeed consider me happy, O subduer of foes? In this way, I am afflicted by hundreds of sorrows on account of Yudhishthira. (04-18-34)
अतः प्रतिविशिष्टानि दुःखान्यन्यानि भारत। वर्तन्ते मयि कौन्तेय वक्ष्यामि शृणु तान्यपि ॥०४-१८-३५॥
ataḥ prativiziṣṭāni duḥkhāny anyāni bhārata। vartante mayi kaunteya vakṣyāmi śṛṇu tāny api ॥04-18-35॥
[अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; प्रतिविशिष्टानि (prativiziṣṭāni) - in particular; दुःखानि (duḥkhāni) - sufferings; अन्यानि (anyāni) - other; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; वर्तन्ते (vartante) - exist; मयि (mayi) - in me; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I will speak; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; तानि (tāni) - those; अपि (api) - also;]
(Therefore in particular, other sufferings, O Bhārata, exist in me. O Kaunteya, I will speak, hear those also.)
Therefore, O Bhārata, there are other particular sufferings within me. O Kaunteya, I will tell you of those too, listen. (04-18-35)
युष्मासु ध्रियमाणेषु दुःखानि विविधान्युत। शोषयन्ति शरीरं मे किं नु दुःखमतः परम् ॥०४-१८-३६॥
yuṣmāsu dhriyamāṇeṣu duḥkhāni vividhānyuta। śoṣayanti śarīraṃ me kiṃ nu duḥkhamataḥ param ॥04-18-36॥
[युष्मासु (yuṣmāsu) - in you all; (locative plural of yuṣmad – you); ध्रियमाणेषु (dhriyamāṇeṣu) - while being supported; (locative plural present participle passive of dhṛ – to hold, support); दुःखानि (duḥkhāni) - pains; sufferings; (nominative/accusative plural neuter); विविधानि (vividhāni) - various; manifold; उत (uta) - indeed; moreover; शोषयन्ति (śoṣayanti) - dry up; exhaust; (third person plural); शरीरम् (śarīram) - body; (accusative singular neuter); मे (me) - my; (genitive singular, first person); किम् (kim) - what; नु (nu) - truly; indeed; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - pain; suffering; (nominative/accusative singular neuter); अतः (ataḥ) - from this; than this; परम् (param) - greater; beyond;]
(In you all, while being supported, the sufferings, various indeed, dry up my body; what indeed pain than this is greater?)
While sustained by you all, the various sufferings are drying up my body; what pain can be greater than this? (04-18-36)
