वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
अथ राजा त्रिगर्तानां सुशर्मा रथयूथपः। प्राप्तकालमिदं वाक्यमुवाच त्वरितो भृशम् ॥०४-२९-१॥
Then King Suśarman, the leader of the chariot-warriors of the Trigartas, at the proper time, spoke this speech very hurriedly and with great intensity. (04-29-1)
असकृन्निकृतः पूर्वं मत्स्यैः साल्वेयकैः सह। सूतेन चैव मत्स्यस्य कीचकेन पुनः पुनः ॥०४-२९-२॥
He was repeatedly deceived before by the Matsyas together with the Salveyakas, and by Kīcaka, the charioteer of Matsya, again and again. (04-29-2)
बाधितो बन्धुभिः सार्धं बलाद्बलवता विभो। स कर्णमभ्युदीक्ष्याथ दुर्योधनमभाषत ॥०४-२९-३॥
Oppressed by his kinsmen along with them, forcibly by the powerful, O master, he then looked at Karna and spoke to Duryodhana. (04-29-3)
असकृन्मत्स्यराज्ञा मे राष्ट्रं बाधितमोजसा। प्रणेता कीचकश्चास्य बलवानभवत्पुरा ॥०४-२९-४॥
My kingdom was repeatedly oppressed by the king of the Matsyas with his power. Formerly, Kīcaka, his leader, was also strong. (04-29-4)
क्रूरोऽमर्षी स दुष्टात्मा भुवि प्रख्यातविक्रमः। निहतस्तत्र गन्धर्वैः पापकर्मा नृशंसवान् ॥०४-२९-५॥
He, cruel and intolerant, wicked-minded and famous for valor on earth, was slain there by the gandharvas—he who performed evil deeds and was cruel-hearted. (04-29-5)
तस्मिंश्च निहते राजन्हीनदर्पो निराश्रयः। भविष्यति निरुत्साहो विराट इति मे मतिः ॥०४-२९-६॥
O king, when he is slain, Virāṭ, deprived of pride and support, will become dispirited—such is my opinion. (04-29-6)
तत्र यात्रा मम मता यदि ते रोचतेऽनघ। कौरवाणां च सर्वेषां कर्णस्य च महात्मनः ॥०४-२९-७॥
O sinless one, if my suggestion of proceeding there is agreeable to you, and also to all the Kauravas and the noble Karṇa. (4-29-7)
एतत्प्राप्तमहं मन्ये कार्यमात्ययिकं हितम्। राष्ट्रं तस्याभियात्वाशु बहुधान्यसमाकुलम् ॥०४-२९-८॥
I consider this task I have obtained to be urgent and beneficial. Let us quickly approach his kingdom, which is rich in abundant grain. (04-29-8)
आददामोऽस्य रत्नानि विविधानि वसूनि च। ग्रामान्राष्ट्राणि वा तस्य हरिष्यामो विभागशः ॥०४-२९-९॥
Let us seize from him all kinds of jewels and treasures; let us also take away his villages and kingdoms, dividing them among ourselves. (04-29-9)
अथ वा गोसहस्राणि बहूनि च शुभानि च। विविधानि हरिष्यामः प्रतिपीड्य पुरं बलात् ॥०४-२९-१०॥
Otherwise, we will seize by force thousands of cows and many other various auspicious things, after laying siege to the city. (04-29-10)
कौरवैः सह सङ्गम्य त्रिगर्तैश्च विशां पते। गास्तस्यापहरामाशु सह सर्वैः सुसंहताः ॥०४-२९-११॥
Having joined forces with the Kauravas and the Trigartas, O lord of men, let us quickly seize his cows along with everyone, being firmly united. (04-29-11)
सन्धिं वा तेन कृत्वा तु निबध्नीमोऽस्य पौरुषम्। हत्वा चास्य चमूं कृत्स्नां वशमन्वानयामहे ॥०४-२९-१२॥
But either by making an agreement with him we bind his manliness, or by slaying his entire army we bring (everything) under our control. (04-29-12)
तं वशे न्यायतः कृत्वा सुखं वत्स्यामहे वयम्। भवतो बलवृद्धिश्च भविष्यति न संशयः ॥०४-२९-१३॥
By bringing him under control in a just manner, we shall live happily; there is no doubt that your strength will also increase. (04-29-13)
तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्य कर्णो राजानमब्रवीत्। सूक्तं सुशर्मणा वाक्यं प्राप्तकालं हितं च नः ॥०४-२९-१४॥
Hearing his words, Karṇa said to the king: "The statement made by Suśarman is well spoken, timely, and beneficial for us." (04-29-14)
तस्मात्क्षिप्रं विनिर्यामो योजयित्वा वरूथिनीम्। विभज्य चाप्यनीकानि यथा वा मन्यसेऽनघ ॥०४-२९-१५॥
Therefore, let us quickly march out after arranging the battle array, and also dividing the troops, in whatever way you think fit, O faultless one. (04-29-15)
प्रज्ञावान्कुरुवृद्धोऽयं सर्वेषां नः पितामहः। आचार्यश्च तथा द्रोणः कृपः शारद्वतस्तथा ॥०४-२९-१६॥
This wise elder of the Kuru family is the grandfather of all of us, as well as the teacher, and also Droṇa, and Kṛpa, the son of Śarada. (04-29-16)
मन्यन्ते ते यथा सर्वे तथा यात्रा विधीयताम्। संमन्त्र्य चाशु गच्छामः साधनार्थं महीपतेः ॥०४-२९-१७॥
Let the journey be arranged just as all of them think. After consultation, let us proceed quickly for the king's objective. (04-29-17)
किं च नः पाण्डवैः कार्यं हीनार्थबलपौरुषैः। अत्यर्थं वा प्रनष्टास्ते प्राप्ता वापि यमक्षयम् ॥०४-२९-१८॥
And what business do we have with the Pāṇḍavas, who are lacking in wealth, strength, and valor? They are either utterly destroyed or have even reached the abode of Yama (the realm of death). (04-29-18)
यामो राजन्ननुद्विग्ना विराटविषयं वयम्। आदास्यामो हि गास्तस्य विविधानि वसूनि च ॥०४-२९-१९॥
O King, we shall go without anxiety to the realm of Virāṭa and indeed seize his cows and various treasures. (04-29-19)
ततो दुर्योधनो राजा वाक्यमादाय तस्य तत्। वैकर्तनस्य कर्णस्य क्षिप्रमाज्ञापयत्स्वयम् ॥०४-२९-२०॥
Then King Duryodhana, having received that speech of his, personally and quickly gave the order to Karṇa, the son of Vikartana. (04-29-20)
शासने नित्यसंयुक्तं दुःशासनमनन्तरम्। सह वृद्धैस्तु संमन्त्र्य क्षिप्रं योजय वाहिनीम् ॥०४-२९-२१॥
In governance, after consulting with the elders, quickly deploy the army with that person who is always engaged in administration and is next after Duḥśāsana. (04-29-21)
यथोद्देशं च गच्छामः सहिताः सर्वकौरवैः। सुशर्मा तु यथोद्दिष्टं देशं यातु महारथः ॥०४-२९-२२॥
We proceed as designated, together with all the Kauravas; as for Suśarmā, the great chariot-warrior, let him go to the region as instructed. (04-29-22)
त्रिगर्तैः सहितो राजा समग्रबलवाहनः। प्रागेव हि सुसंवीतो मत्स्यस्य विषयं प्रति ॥०४-२९-२३॥
The king, accompanied by the Trigartas and his full army, had already set out, well-equipped, towards the territory of Matsya. (04-29-23)
जघन्यतो वयं तत्र यास्यामो दिवसान्तरम्। विषयं मत्स्यराजस्य सुसमृद्धं सुसंहताः ॥०४-२९-२४॥
At dawn, after a few days, we will go there—united—to the well-provided land of the fish-king. (04-29-24)
ते यात्वा सहसा तत्र विराटनगरं प्रति। क्षिप्रं गोपान्समासाद्य गृह्णन्तु विपुलं धनम् ॥०४-२९-२५॥
Let them go quickly there towards Virata's city, swiftly approach the cowherds, and seize abundant wealth. (04-29-25)
गवां शतसहस्राणि श्रीमन्ति गुणवन्ति च। वयमपि निगृह्णीमो द्विधा कृत्वा वरूथिनीम् ॥०४-२९-२६॥
There are hundreds of thousands of cows, prosperous and of good quality; let us too seize the herd by dividing it into two (groups). (04-29-26)
स स्म गत्वा यथोद्दिष्टां दिशं वह्नेर्महीपतिः। आदत्त गाः सुशर्माथ घर्मपक्षस्य सप्तमीम् ॥०४-२९-२७॥
Having gone, the king, as directed by Agni, took the cows, and then Suśarman took the seventh (cow) from the side related to the sacrificial fire. (04-29-27)
अपरं दिवसं सर्वे राजन्सम्भूय कौरवाः। अष्टम्यां तान्यगृह्णन्त गोकुलानि सहस्रशः ॥०४-२९-२८॥
O king, on another day, all the Kauravas, having assembled, on the eighth day, seized those herds of cows by the thousands. (04-29-28)
