वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
निर्याय नगराच्छूरा व्यूढानीकाः प्रहारिणः। त्रिगर्तानस्पृशन्मत्स्याः सूर्ये परिणते सति ॥०४-३१-१॥
The brave Matsyas, having departed from the city in battle formation, ready for attack, did not reach the Trigartas when the sun had set. (04-31-1)
ते त्रिगर्ताश्च मत्स्याश्च संरब्धा युद्धदुर्मदाः। अन्योन्यमभिगर्जन्तो गोषु गृद्धा महाबलाः ॥०४-३१-२॥
The Trigartas and the Matsyas, fierce and battle-maddened, roared at each other with mighty strength, each coveting the cattle. (04-31-2)
भीमाश्च मत्तमातङ्गास्तोमराङ्कुशचोदिताः। ग्रामणीयैः समारूढाः कुशलैर्हस्तिसादिभिः ॥०४-३१-३॥
And also mighty drunken elephants, driven with spears and goads, were mounted by chiefs and skillful mahouts. (04-31-3)
तेषां समागमो घोरस्तुमुलो लोमहर्षणः। देवासुरसमो राजन्नासीत्सूर्ये विलम्बति ॥०४-३१-४॥
O king, their meeting was a terrible, tumultuous, and hair-raising encounter, equal to a battle between the gods and asuras, which took place while the sun was still overhead. (04-31-4)
उदतिष्ठद्रजो भौमं न प्रज्ञायत किञ्चन। पक्षिणश्चापतन्भूमौ सैन्येन रजसावृताः ॥०४-३१-५॥
Dust rose from the earth, and nothing was visible. Birds, covered with dust raised by the army, fell to the ground. (04-31-5)
इषुभिर्व्यतिसंयद्भिरादित्योऽन्तरधीयत। खद्योतैरिव संयुक्तमन्तरिक्षं व्यराजत ॥०४-३१-६॥
The Sun was obscured by arrows and disappeared from view. The sky, filled as if with fireflies, glowed. (04-31-6)
रुक्मपृष्ठानि चापानि व्यतिषक्तानि धन्विनाम्। पततां लोकवीराणां सव्यदक्षिणमस्यताम् ॥०४-३१-७॥
The golden-backed bows of the archers, interlaced, fell to the left and right of the fallen world-heroes who had shot them. (04-31-7)
रथा रथैः समाजग्मुः पादातैश्च पदातयः। सादिभिः सादिनश्चैव गजैश्चापि महागजाः ॥०४-३१-८॥
Chariots joined chariots, foot-soldiers met foot-soldiers, riders confronted riders, and great elephants faced great elephants also. (04-31-8)
असिभिः पट्टिशैः प्रासैः शक्तिभिस्तोमरैरपि। संरब्धाः समरे राजन्निजघ्नुरितरेतरम् ॥०४-३१-९॥
O king, enraged in the battle, they struck one another with swords, spears, lances, śaktis, and even with tomaras. (04-31-9)
निघ्नन्तः समरेऽन्योन्यं शूराः परिघबाहवः। न शेकुरभिसंरब्धाः शूरान्कर्तुं पराङ्मुखान् ॥०४-३१-१०॥
The club-armed heroes, slaying each other in battle, though extremely enraged, could not make the other heroes turn their backs. (04-31-10)
कॢप्तोत्तरोष्ठं सुनसं कॢप्तकेशमलङ्कृतम्। अदृश्यत शिरश्छिन्नं रजोध्वस्तं सकुण्डलम् ॥०४-३१-११॥
A head—fashioned with upper lip, beautiful nose, adorned with arranged hair—severed, covered in dust and wearing earrings, was seen. (04-31-11)
अदृश्यंस्तत्र गात्राणि शरैश्छिन्नानि भागशः। शालस्कन्धनिकाशानि क्षत्रियाणां महामृधे ॥०४-३१-१२॥
There, in the great battle, the severed limbs of the kṣatriyas, cut in pieces by arrows, which resembled the trunks of śāla trees, became invisible. (04-31-12)
नागभोगनिकाशैश्च बाहुभिश्चन्दनोक्षितैः। आकीर्णा वसुधा तत्र शिरोभिश्च सकुण्डलैः ॥०४-३१-१३॥
There, the earth was strewn with arms resembling the coils of serpents and anointed with sandalwood paste, as well as with heads adorned with earrings. (04-31-13)
उपशाम्यद्रजो भौमं रुधिरेण प्रसर्पता। कश्मलं प्राविशद्घोरं निर्मर्यादमवर्तत ॥०४-३१-१४॥
As the dust settled on the earth with blood spreading, a dreadful and limitless stupor set in. (04-31-14)
शतानीकः शतं हत्वा विशालाक्षश्चतुःशतम्। प्रविष्टौ महतीं सेनां त्रिगर्तानां महारथौ ॥ आर्च्छेतां बहुसंरब्धौ केशाकेशि नखानखि ॥०४-३१-१५॥
Śatānīka, after killing a hundred men, and Viśālākṣa, after slaying four hundred, both mighty chariot-warriors entered the great army of the Trigartas. Overcome with fury, they attacked each other, fighting hair to hair and nail to nail. (04-31-15)
लक्षयित्वा त्रिगर्तानां तौ प्रविष्टौ रथव्रजम्। जग्मतुः सूर्यदत्तश्च मदिराश्वश्च पृष्ठतः ॥०४-३१-१६॥
After observing the Trigartas, the two entered the chariot division, followed by Sūryadatta and Madirāśva from behind. (04-31-16)
विराटस्तत्र सङ्ग्रामे हत्वा पञ्चशतान्रथान्। हयानां च शतान्यत्र हत्वा पञ्च महारथान् ॥०४-३१-१७॥
Virāṭa, there in the battle, slew five hundred charioteers, and here, after slaying hundreds of horses, he also killed five great warriors. (04-31-17)
चरन्स विविधान्मार्गान्रथेषु रथयूथपः। त्रिगर्तानां सुशर्माणमार्च्छद्रुक्मरथं रणे ॥०४-३१-१८॥
Moving along various paths among the chariots, the chief of the chariot-warriors approached Suśarmā of the Trigartas, who was in his golden chariot on the battlefield. (04-31-18)
तौ व्यावहरतां तत्र महात्मानौ महाबलौ। अन्योन्यमभिगर्जन्तौ गोष्ठे गोवृषभाविव ॥०४-३१-१९॥
Those two, both great-souled and mighty, confronted each other there, each roaring at the other in the cowshed like two bulls. (04-31-19)
ततो रथाभ्यां रथिनौ व्यतियाय समन्ततः। शरान्व्यसृजतां शीघ्रं तोयधारा घनाविव ॥०४-३१-२०॥
Then the two charioteers, mounted on their chariots, wheeled past each other on all sides, and rapidly released arrows like streams of water poured forth by two clouds. (04-31-20)
अन्योन्यं चातिसंरब्धौ विचेरतुरमर्षणौ। कृतास्त्रौ निशितैर्बाणैरसिशक्तिगदाभृतौ ॥०४-३१-२१॥
Both, exceedingly enraged and intolerant, roamed attacking one another, adept in weapons, wielding sharp arrows, swords, spears, and maces. (04-31-21)
ततो राजा सुशर्माणं विव्याध दशभिः शरैः। पञ्चभिः पञ्चभिश्चास्य विव्याध चतुरो हयान् ॥०४-३१-२२॥
Then the king pierced Suśarman with ten arrows, and with five plus five arrows he pierced his four horses. (04-31-22)
तथैव मत्स्यराजानं सुशर्मा युद्धदुर्मदः। पञ्चाशता शितैर्बाणैर्विव्याध परमास्त्रवित् ॥०४-३१-२३॥
Similarly, Suśarmā, proud in battle and skilled in supreme weapons, struck the Matsya king with fifty sharp arrows. (04-31-23)
ततः सैन्यं समावृत्य मत्स्यराजसुशर्मणोः। नाभ्यजानंस्तदान्योन्यं प्रदोषे रजसावृते ॥०४-३१-२४॥
Then, having surrounded the armies of the Matsya king and Suśarman, they did not recognize each other at dusk when all was covered in dust. (04-31-24)
