विराट उवाच॥
Virāṭ said:
यद्येष राजा कौरव्यः कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। कतमोऽस्यार्जुनो भ्राता भीमश्च कतमो बली ॥०४-६६-१॥
If this king, the Kuru prince and son of Kuntī, is Yudhiṣṭhira, then which one is his brother Arjuna, and which one is the mighty Bhīma? (04-66-1)
नकुलः सहदेवो वा द्रौपदी वा यशस्विनी। यदा द्यूते जिताः पार्था न प्राज्ञायन्त ते क्वचित् ॥०४-६६-२॥
When the Pāṇḍavas were defeated in gambling, Nakula, Sahadeva, or Draupadī the illustrious were not recognized anywhere. (04-66-2)
अर्जुन उवाच॥
Arjuna said.
य एष बल्लवो ब्रूते सूदस्तव नराधिप। एष भीमो महाबाहुर्भीमवेगपराक्रमः ॥०४-६६-३॥
O king, the one whom this cowherd, your charioteer, refers to is Bhīma, the mighty-armed, of terrible speed and valor. (04-66-3)
एष क्रोधवशान्हत्वा पर्वते गन्धमादने। सौगन्धिकानि दिव्यानि कृष्णार्थे समुपाहरत् ॥०४-६६-४॥
He, driven by anger, killed (the guardians) and brought the divine Saugandhika flowers from Mount Gandhamādana for Kṛṣṇa. (04-66-4)
गन्धर्व एष वै हन्ता कीचकानां दुरात्मनाम्। व्याघ्रानृक्षान्वराहांश्च हतवान्स्त्रीपुरे तव ॥०४-६६-५॥
This gandharva is indeed the slayer of the evil-minded Kīcakas, and has slain tigers, bears, and boars in your city of women. (04-66-5)
यश्चासीदश्वबन्धस्ते नकुलोऽयं परन्तपः। गोसङ्ख्यः सहदेवश्च माद्रीपुत्रौ महारथौ ॥०४-६६-६॥
This Nakula, your horse-binder and scorcher of foes, and Sahadeva, the cattle-counter—both sons of Mādrī—are great chariot-warriors. (04-66-6)
शृङ्गारवेषाभरणौ रूपवन्तौ यशस्विनौ। नानारथसहस्राणां समर्थौ पुरुषर्षभौ ॥०४-६६-७॥
Adorned in ornaments and garments of love, handsome and illustrious, capable of commanding thousands of chariots, the two were the best among men. (04-66-7)
एषा पद्मपलाशाक्षी सुमध्या चारुहासिनी। सैरन्ध्री द्रौपदी राजन्यत्कृते कीचका हताः ॥०४-६६-८॥
This lotus-petal-eyed, slender-waisted, beautiful-smiling woman, Sairandhri Draupadi—Kichaka was killed for her sake, O King. (4-66-8)
अर्जुनोऽहं महाराज व्यक्तं ते श्रोत्रमागतः। भीमादवरजः पार्थो यमाभ्यां चापि पूर्वजः ॥०४-६६-९॥
O great king, I am Arjuna; this has no doubt come to your ears. I am the younger brother of Bhīma, Pārtha, but older than the twin sons of Mādrī (Nakula and Sahadeva). (04-66-9)
उषिताः स्म महाराज सुखं तव निवेशने। अज्ञातवासमुषिता गर्भवास इव प्रजाः ॥०४-६६-१०॥
O great king, we lived happily in your residence. Living in exile unknown, the subjects were like being in the womb. (04-66-10)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
यदार्जुनेन ते वीराः कथिताः पञ्च पाण्डवाः। तदार्जुनस्य वैराटिः कथयामास विक्रमम् ॥०४-६६-११॥
When Arjuna described those heroes, the five Pāṇḍavas, then the son of Virāṭa recounted Arjuna's valor. (04-66-11)
अयं स द्विषतां मध्ये मृगाणामिव केसरी। अचरद्रथवृन्देषु निघ्नंस्तेषां वरान्वरान् ॥०४-६६-१२॥
He, like a lion among deer in the midst of enemies, moved through the chariot divisions, repeatedly slaying their foremost warriors. (04-66-12)
अनेन विद्धो मातङ्गो महानेकेषुणा हतः। हिरण्यकक्ष्यः सङ्ग्रामे दन्ताभ्यामगमन्महीम् ॥०४-६६-१३॥
Struck by this one, the great elephant was killed by a single arrow; Hiraṇyakakṣya, in the battle, fell to the ground by his two tusks. (04-66-13)
अनेन विजिता गावो जिताश्च कुरवो युधि। अस्य शङ्खप्रणादेन कर्णौ मे बधिरीकृतौ ॥०४-६६-१४॥
By him, the cows were seized, and the Kurus were also vanquished in battle. The sound of his conch has deafened my ears. (04-66-14)
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा मत्स्यराजः प्रतापवान्। उत्तरं प्रत्युवाचेदमभिपन्नो युधिष्ठिरे ॥०४-६६-१५॥
Having heard those words, the valiant king of the Matsyas, intent on Yudhiṣṭhira, gave this reply. (04-66-15)
प्रसादनं पाण्डवस्य प्राप्तकालं हि रोचये। उत्तरां च प्रयच्छामि पार्थाय यदि ते मतम् ॥०४-६६-१६॥
I approve a timely reconciliation with the Pāṇḍava. I will also give Uttarā to Pārtha, if that is your opinion. (04-66-16)
उत्तर उवाच॥
Uttara said.
अर्च्याः पूज्याश्च मान्याश्च प्राप्तकालं च मे मतम्। पूज्यन्तां पूजनार्हाश्च महाभागाश्च पाण्डवाः ॥०४-६६-१७॥
The Pāṇḍavas are worthy of worship, honor, and respect, and in my opinion the proper time has come. Let these greatly fortunate ones, deserving of worship, be honored. (04-66-17)
विराट उवाच॥
Virāṭ said.
अहं खल्वपि सङ्ग्रामे शत्रूणां वशमागतः। मोक्षितो भीमसेनेन गावश्च विजितास्तथा ॥०४-६६-१८॥
I too, having fallen under the power of the enemies in battle, was freed by Bhīmasena; and thus the cows were also recovered. (04-66-18)
एतेषां बाहुवीर्येण यदस्माकं जयो मृधे। वयं सर्वे सहामात्याः कुन्तीपुत्रं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥ प्रसादयामो भद्रं ते सानुजं पाण्डवर्षभम् ॥०४-६६-१९॥
Because our victory in battle is due to the arm-strength of these men, we all, along with our ministers, seek the favor of Kunti's son Yudhishthira, together with his brothers, that noble bull among the Pandavas. (04-66-19)
यदस्माभिरजानद्भिः किञ्चिदुक्तो नराधिपः। क्षन्तुमर्हति तत्सर्वं धर्मात्मा ह्येष पाण्डवः ॥०४-६६-२०॥
Whatever we have said unknowingly, the king should forgive all that, for this Pandava is righteous-souled. (04-66-20)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
ततो विराटः परमाभितुष्टः; समेत्य राज्ञा समयं चकार। राज्यं च सर्वं विससर्ज तस्मै; सदण्डकोशं सपुरं महात्मा ॥०४-६६-२१॥
Then, Virāṭa, being extremely pleased, met with the king and made an agreement. He gave the entire kingdom, complete with treasury, army, and city, to him, the great-souled one. (04-66-21)
पाण्डवांश्च ततः सर्वान्मत्स्यराजः प्रतापवान्। धनञ्जयं पुरस्कृत्य दिष्ट्या दिष्ट्येति चाब्रवीत् ॥०४-६६-२२॥
Then the mighty king of the Matsyas, placing Dhanañjaya at the front, said to all the Pāṇḍavas, 'By fortune! By fortune!'. (04-66-22)
समुपाघ्राय मूर्धानं संश्लिष्य च पुनः पुनः। युधिष्ठिरं च भीमं च माद्रीपुत्रौ च पाण्डवौ ॥०४-६६-२३॥
After affectionately smelling the heads and repeatedly embracing Yudhishthira, Bhima, and the two sons of Madri — the two Pandavas —
नातृप्यद्दर्शने तेषां विराटो वाहिनीपतिः। सम्प्रीयमाणो राजानं युधिष्ठिरमथाब्रवीत् ॥०४-६६-२४॥
Virāṭa, the lord of the army, was not satisfied with seeing them. Being pleased, he then spoke to King Yudhiṣṭhira. (04-66-24)
दिष्ट्या भवन्तः सम्प्राप्ताः सर्वे कुशलिनो वनात्। दिष्ट्या च पारितं कृच्छ्रमज्ञातं वै दुरात्मभिः ॥०४-६६-२५॥
Fortunately, you all have returned safely from the forest. Fortunately, too, you have overcome the unknown difficulty caused by wicked beings. (04-66-25)
इदं च राज्यं नः पार्था यच्चान्यद्वसु किञ्चन। प्रतिगृह्णन्तु तत्सर्वं कौन्तेया अविशङ्कया ॥०४-६६-२६॥
Let the sons of Kuntī accept, without any doubt, this kingdom of ours and whatever other wealth there may be, O sons of Pṛthā. (04-66-26)
उत्तरां प्रतिगृह्णातु सव्यसाची धनञ्जयः। अयं ह्यौपयिको भर्ता तस्याः पुरुषसत्तमः ॥०४-६६-२७॥
Let Savyasācī Dhanañjaya accept Uttarā; for this illustrious man is, indeed, her rightful husband—best among men. (04-66-27)
एवमुक्तो धर्मराजः पार्थमैक्षद्धनञ्जयम्। ईक्षितश्चार्जुनो भ्रात्रा मत्स्यं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥०४-६६-२८॥
Thus addressed, Dharmaraja (Yudhishthira) looked at Partha (Arjuna, Dhananjaya). Perceived by his brother, Arjuna spoke to King Matsya. (04-66-28)
प्रतिगृह्णाम्यहं राजन्स्नुषां दुहितरं तव। युक्तश्चावां हि सम्बन्धो मत्स्यभारतसत्तमौ ॥०४-६६-२९॥
O king, I accept your daughter as a daughter-in-law. The connection between us two is indeed appropriate, O best of Matsyas and Bhāratas. (04-66-29)
