विराट उवाच॥
Virāṭ said.
किमर्थं पाण्डवश्रेष्ठ भार्यां दुहितरं मम। प्रतिग्रहीतुं नेमां त्वं मया दत्तामिहेच्छसि ॥०४-६७-१॥
O best of the Pāṇḍavas, for what reason do you not wish to accept this daughter of mine whom I have given here as your wife? (04-67-1)
अर्जुन उवाच॥
Arjuna said.
अन्तःपुरेऽहमुषितः सदा पश्यन्सुतां तव। रहस्यं च प्रकाशं च विश्वस्ता पितृवन्मयि ॥०४-६७-२॥
I have stayed in the inner apartments, always seeing your daughter. In both secret and open matters, she trusted me like a father. (04-67-2)
प्रियो बहुमतश्चाहं नर्तको गीतकोविदः। आचार्यवच्च मां नित्यं मन्यते दुहिता तव ॥०४-६७-३॥
I am beloved, highly esteemed, a dancer, and skilled in singing. Your daughter always considers me as a teacher. (04-67-3)
वयःस्थया तया राजन्सह संवत्सरोषितः। अतिशङ्का भवेत्स्थाने तव लोकस्य चाभिभो ॥०४-६७-४॥
O king, you have lived together with her, who is of the proper age, for a year. Great suspicion may arise among your people and yourself, O ruler. (04-67-4)
तस्मान्निमन्त्रये त्वाहं दुहितुः पृथिवीपते। शुद्धो जितेन्द्रियो दान्तस्तस्याः शुद्धिः कृता मया ॥०४-६७-५॥
Therefore, O lord of the earth, I invite you regarding the daughter; I am pure, self-controlled, and restrained, and I have performed her purification. (04-67-5)
स्नुषाया दुहितुर्वापि पुत्रे चात्मनि वा पुनः। अत्र शङ्कां न पश्यामि तेन शुद्धिर्भविष्यति ॥०४-६७-६॥
Whether concerning the daughter-in-law, the daughter, or again in the son or in oneself; here I see no doubt—by that, purification will result. (04-67-6)
अभिषङ्गादहं भीतो मिथ्याचारात्परन्तप। स्नुषार्थमुत्तरां राजन्प्रतिगृह्णामि ते सुताम् ॥०४-६७-७॥
O subduer of foes, fearing contact and false accusation, O king, for the sake of a daughter-in-law, I accept your daughter Uttarā. (04-67-7)
स्वस्रीयो वासुदेवस्य साक्षाद्देवशिशुर्यथा। दयितश्चक्रहस्तस्य बाल एवास्त्रकोविदः ॥०४-६७-८॥
He was the sister's son of Vāsudeva, manifestly a divine child, beloved of the wielder of the discus, a boy already skilled in weapons. (04-67-8)
अभिमन्युर्महाबाहुः पुत्रो मम विशां पते। जामाता तव युक्तो वै भर्ता च दुहितुस्तव ॥०४-६७-९॥
Abhimanyu, mighty-armed, is my son, O lord of men. He is indeed your designated son-in-law and the husband of your daughter. (04-67-9)
विराट उवाच॥
Virāṭ said;
उपपन्नं कुरुश्रेष्ठे कुन्तीपुत्रे धनञ्जये। य एवं धर्मनित्यश्च जातज्ञानश्च पाण्डवः ॥०४-६७-१०॥
This has arisen in the best of the Kurus, the son of Kuntī, Dhananjaya, who is ever devoted to dharma and in whom knowledge has arisen – the son of Pāṇḍu. (04-67-10)
यत्कृत्यं मन्यसे पार्थ क्रियतां तदनन्तरम्। सर्वे कामाः समृद्धा मे सम्बन्धी यस्य मेऽर्जुनः ॥०४-६७-११॥
O Pārtha, whatever task you consider, let it be done right after this. All my desires are fulfilled, for my relative is Arjuna. (04-67-11)
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
एवं ब्रुवति राजेन्द्रे कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। अन्वजानात्स संयोगं समये मत्स्यपार्थयोः ॥०४-६७-१२॥
Thus, while the king was speaking, Kuntī's son Yudhiṣṭhira agreed to the alliance between the Matsya king and Pārtha (the Pandavas). (04-67-12)
ततो मित्रेषु सर्वेषु वासुदेवे च भारत। प्रेषयामास कौन्तेयो विराटश्च महीपतिः ॥०४-६७-१३॥
Then, O Bhārata, both the son of Kuntī and King Virāṭa sent messages to all the friends and to Vāsudeva. (04-67-13)
ततस्त्रयोदशे वर्षे निवृत्ते पञ्च पाण्डवाः। उपप्लव्ये विराटस्य समपद्यन्त सर्वशः ॥०४-६७-१४॥
After the thirteenth year had passed, all five Pāṇḍavas assembled together at Upaplavya in the domain of Virāṭa. (04-67-14)
तस्मिन्वसंश्च बीभत्सुरानिनाय जनार्दनम्। आनर्तेभ्योऽपि दाशार्हानभिमन्युं च पाण्डवः ॥०४-६७-१५॥
There, Bībhatsu (Arjuna) brought Janārdana (Krishna) to that abode; from the Ānartas he also brought the Dāśārhas, Abhimanyu, and the Pāṇḍava. (04-67-15)
काशिराजश्च शैब्यश्च प्रीयमाणौ युधिष्ठिरे। अक्षौहिणीभ्यां सहितावागतौ पृथिवीपते ॥०४-६७-१६॥
O lord of the earth, the king of Kāśī and the ruler of the Śibi, both pleased with Yudhiṣṭhira, came together with two akṣauhiṇīs (great formations of troops). (04-67-16)
अक्षौहिण्या च तेजस्वी यज्ञसेनो महाबलः। द्रौपद्याश्च सुता वीराः शिखण्डी चापराजितः ॥०४-६७-१७॥
With one akṣauhiṇī division and the brilliant, mighty Yajñasena (Drupada), Draupadī's heroic sons, and the unconquered Śikhaṇḍī. (04-67-17)
धृष्टद्युम्नश्च दुर्धर्षः सर्वशस्त्रभृतां वरः। समस्ताक्षौहिणीपाला यज्वानो भूरिदक्षिणाः ॥ सर्वे शस्त्रास्त्रसम्पन्नाः सर्वे शूरास्तनुत्यजः ॥०४-६७-१८॥
Dhṛṣṭadyumna, unconquerable and the foremost among all weapon-bearers, and all the division leaders, who are sacrifice performers and givers of great gifts—all are equipped with weapons and missiles, all are courageous and willing to lay down their lives. (04-67-18)
तानागतानभिप्रेक्ष्य मत्स्यो धर्मभृतां वरः। प्रीतोऽभवद्दुहितरं दत्त्वा तामभिमन्यवे ॥०४-६७-१९॥
Seeing those who had arrived, King Matsya, the best of the righteous, was pleased and gave his daughter to Abhimanyu. (04-67-19)
ततः प्रत्युपयातेषु पार्थिवेषु ततस्ततः। तत्रागमद्वासुदेवो वनमाली हलायुधः ॥ कृतवर्मा च हार्दिक्यो युयुधानश्च सात्यकिः ॥०४-६७-२०॥
Then, as the kings gathered there, Vāsudeva—adorned with a forest garland and wielding the plough—arrived, along with Kṛtavarmā, Hārdikya, Yuyudhāna, and Sātyaki. (04-67-20)
अनाधृष्टिस्तथाक्रूरः साम्बो निशठ एव च। अभिमन्युमुपादाय सह मात्रा परन्तपाः ॥०४-६७-२१॥
Anādhṛṣṭi, Krūra, Sāmba, and Niśaṭha, indeed, the subduers of enemies, taking Abhimanyu with his mother, (set out). (04-67-21)
इन्द्रसेनादयश्चैव रथैस्तैः सुसमाहितैः। आययुः सहिताः सर्वे परिसंवत्सरोषिताः ॥०४-६७-२२॥
Indrasena and the others, with those well-arrayed chariots, all together, having spent a full year, came. (04-67-22)
दश नागसहस्राणि हयानां च शतायुतम्। रथानामर्बुदं पूर्णं निखर्वं च पदातिनाम् ॥०४-६७-२३॥
There were ten thousand elephants, and also a million horses; a complete ten million chariots, and a hundred million foot-soldiers. (04-67-23)
वृष्ण्यन्धकाश्च बहवो भोजाश्च परमौजसः। अन्वयुर्वृष्णिशार्दूलं वासुदेवं महाद्युतिम् ॥०४-६७-२४॥
The Vṛṣṇis, Andhakas, and many mighty Bhojas followed Vāsudeva, the tiger among the Vṛṣṇis, who possessed great splendor. (04-67-24)
पारिबर्हं ददौ कृष्णः पाण्डवानां महात्मनाम्। स्त्रियो रत्नानि वासांसि पृथक्पृथगनेकशः ॥ ततो विवाहो विधिवद्ववृते मत्स्यपार्थयोः ॥०४-६७-२५॥
Kṛṣṇa gave wedding gifts to the great-souled Pāṇḍavas: women, jewels, and garments, each kind in various ways. Then the marriage of the Matsya princess and Arjuna was performed according to proper rites. (04-67-25)
ततः शङ्खाश्च भेर्यश्च गोमुखाडम्बरास्तथा। पार्थैः संयुज्यमानस्य नेदुर्मत्स्यस्य वेश्मनि ॥०४-६७-२६॥
Then conches, drums, gomukha-horns, and other instruments were loudly played by the sons of Pṛthā, and they resounded throughout the palace of the king of Matsya. (04-67-26)
उच्चावचान्मृगाञ्जघ्नुर्मेध्यांश्च शतशः पशून्। सुरामैरेयपानानि प्रभूतान्यभ्यहारयन् ॥०४-६७-२७॥
They killed by the hundreds various animals fit for sacrifice, and brought in great quantities drinks of surā and maireya. (04-67-27)
गायनाख्यानशीलाश्च नटा वैतालिकास्तथा। स्तुवन्तस्तानुपातिष्ठन्सूताश्च सह मागधैः ॥०४-६७-२८॥
Those adept at singing and storytelling, actors, and bards likewise, together with the Magadhas, and charioteers, praising them, attended upon them. (04-67-28)
सुदेष्णां च पुरस्कृत्य मत्स्यानां च वरस्त्रियः। आजग्मुश्चारुसर्वाङ्ग्यः सुमृष्टमणिकुण्डलाः ॥०४-६७-२९॥
Placing Sudeṣṇā at the forefront, the chief women of the Matsyas, beautiful in every limb and adorned with gleaming gem earrings, came forward. (04-67-29)
वर्णोपपन्नास्ता नार्यो रूपवत्यः स्वलङ्कृताः। सर्वाश्चाभ्यभवत्कृष्णा रूपेण यशसा श्रिया ॥०४-६७-३०॥
Those women, possessing color, beauty, and well adorned, were all surpassed by Kṛṣṇā in beauty, fame, and splendor. (04-67-30)
परिवार्योत्तरां तास्तु राजपुत्रीमलङ्कृताम्। सुतामिव महेन्द्रस्य पुरस्कृत्योपतस्थिरे ॥०४-६७-३१॥
They surrounded Uttarā, the adorned princess, placed her at the front like the daughter of Mahendra, and approached.
तां प्रत्यगृह्णात्कौन्तेयः सुतस्यार्थे धनञ्जयः। सौभद्रस्यानवद्याङ्गीं विराटतनयां तदा ॥०४-६७-३२॥
Then Dhananjaya, son of Kunti, for his son (Abhimanyu), accepted the daughter of Virata, she of flawless limbs, for Subhadra’s son. (04-67-32)
तत्रातिष्ठन्महाराजो रूपमिन्द्रस्य धारयन्। स्नुषां तां प्रतिजग्राह कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ॥०४-६७-३३॥
There the great king stood assuming the form of Indra. Yudhiṣṭhira, son of Kuntī, accepted her as his daughter-in-law. (4-67-33)
प्रतिगृह्य च तां पार्थः पुरस्कृत्य जनार्दनम्। विवाहं कारयामास सौभद्रस्य महात्मनः ॥०४-६७-३४॥
Having received her and with Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa) at the forefront, Pārtha (Arjuna) arranged the marriage of the noble Saubhadra (Abhimanyu). (04-67-34)
तस्मै सप्त सहस्राणि हयानां वातरंहसाम्। द्वे च नागशते मुख्ये प्रादाद्बहु धनं तदा ॥०४-६७-३५॥
At that time, he gave him seven thousand wind-swift horses, two hundred excellent elephants, and much wealth. (04-67-35)
कृते विवाहे तु तदा धर्मपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। ब्राह्मणेभ्यो ददौ वित्तं यदुपाहरदच्युतः ॥०४-६७-३६॥
But when the marriage was performed, at that time Dharmaputra Yudhiṣṭhira gave to the Brāhmaṇas the wealth that Acyuta (Kṛṣṇa) had brought. (04-67-36)
गोसहस्राणि रत्नानि वस्त्राणि विविधानि च। भूषणानि च मुख्यानि यानानि शयनानि च ॥०४-६७-३७॥
Thousands of cows, gems, garments of various kinds, ornaments, principal vehicles, and beds.
तन्महोत्सवसङ्काशं हृष्टपुष्टजनावृतम्। नगरं मत्स्यराजस्य शुशुभे भरतर्षभ ॥०४-६७-३८॥
O foremost of the Bharatas, that city of the king of the Matsyas, looking like a grand festival and filled with joyful and prosperous people, shone brilliantly. (04-67-38)
