virāṭ uvāca॥
Virāṭ said.
kimarthaṃ pāṇḍavaśreṣṭha bhāryāṃ duhitaraṃ mama। pratigrahītuṃ nemāṃ tvaṃ mayā dattām ihecchasi॥04-67-1॥
O best of the Pāṇḍavas, for what reason do you not wish to accept this daughter of mine whom I have given here as your wife? (04-67-1)
arjuna uvāca॥
Arjuna said.
antaḥpure'hamuṣitaḥ sadā paśyansutāṃ tava. rahasyaṃ ca prakāśaṃ ca viśvastā pitṛvanmayi ॥04-67-2॥
I have stayed in the inner apartments, always seeing your daughter. In both secret and open matters, she trusted me like a father. (04-67-2)
priyo bahumataś cāhaṃ nartako gītakovidaḥ। ācāryavac ca māṃ nityaṃ manyate duhitā tava ॥04-67-3॥
I am beloved, highly esteemed, a dancer, and skilled in singing. Your daughter always considers me as a teacher. (04-67-3)
vayaḥ-sthayā tayā rājan saha saṁvatsara-uṣitaḥ। atiśaṅkā bhavet sthāne tava lokasya ca abhibho ॥04-67-4॥
O king, you have lived together with her, who is of the proper age, for a year. Great suspicion may arise among your people and yourself, O ruler. (04-67-4)
tasmān nimantraye tvāhaṃ duhituḥ pṛthivīpate। śuddho jitendriyo dāntas tasyāḥ śuddhiḥ kṛtā mayā॥04-67-5॥
Therefore, O lord of the earth, I invite you regarding the daughter; I am pure, self-controlled, and restrained, and I have performed her purification. (04-67-5)
snuṣāyā duhitur vā api putre ca ātmani vā punaḥ। atra śaṅkāṃ na paśyāmi tena śuddhir bhaviṣyati ॥04-67-6॥
Whether concerning the daughter-in-law, the daughter, or again in the son or in oneself; here I see no doubt—by that, purification will result. (04-67-6)
abhiṣaṅgādahaṃ bhīto mithyācārāt parantapa। snuṣārtham uttarāṃ rājan pratigṛhṇāmi te sutām॥04-67-7॥
O subduer of foes, fearing contact and false accusation, O king, for the sake of a daughter-in-law, I accept your daughter Uttarā. (04-67-7)
svasrīyo vāsudevasya sākṣād devaśiśur yathā। dayitaś cakrahastasya bāla eva astrakovidaḥ ॥04-67-8॥
He was the sister's son of Vāsudeva, manifestly a divine child, beloved of the wielder of the discus, a boy already skilled in weapons. (04-67-8)
abhimanyur-mahābāhuḥ putro mama viśāṃ pate. jāmātā tava yukto vai bhartā ca duhitus-tava ॥04-67-9॥
Abhimanyu, mighty-armed, is my son, O lord of men. He is indeed your designated son-in-law and the husband of your daughter. (04-67-9)
virāṭ uvāca॥
Virāṭ said;
upapannaṃ kuruśreṣṭhe kuntīputre dhanañjaye। ya evaṃ dharmanityaś ca jātajñānaś ca pāṇḍavaḥ ॥04-67-10॥
This has arisen in the best of the Kurus, the son of Kuntī, Dhananjaya, who is ever devoted to dharma and in whom knowledge has arisen – the son of Pāṇḍu. (04-67-10)
yat kṛtyaṃ manyase pārtha kriyatāṃ tad anantaram। sarve kāmāḥ samṛddhā me sambandhī yasya me'rjunaḥ ॥04-67-11॥
O Pārtha, whatever task you consider, let it be done right after this. All my desires are fulfilled, for my relative is Arjuna. (04-67-11)
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaiśampāyana said.
evaṃ bruvati rājendre kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। anvajānāt saṃyogaṃ samaye matsyapārthayoḥ॥04-67-12॥
Thus, while the king was speaking, Kuntī's son Yudhiṣṭhira agreed to the alliance between the Matsya king and Pārtha (the Pandavas). (04-67-12)
tato mitreṣu sarveṣu vāsudeve ca bhārata। preṣayāmāsa kaunteyo virāṭaś ca mahīpatiḥ ॥04-67-13॥
Then, O Bhārata, both the son of Kuntī and King Virāṭa sent messages to all the friends and to Vāsudeva. (04-67-13)
tatas trayodaśe varṣe nivṛtte pañca pāṇḍavāḥ। upaplavye virāṭasya samapadyanta sarvaśaḥ॥04-67-14॥
After the thirteenth year had passed, all five Pāṇḍavas assembled together at Upaplavya in the domain of Virāṭa. (04-67-14)
tasminvasamśca bībhatsur ānināya janārdanam। ānartebhyo'pi dāśārhān abhimanyuṃ ca pāṇḍavaḥ ॥04-67-15॥
There, Bībhatsu (Arjuna) brought Janārdana (Krishna) to that abode; from the Ānartas he also brought the Dāśārhas, Abhimanyu, and the Pāṇḍava. (04-67-15)
kāśirājaś ca śaibyaś ca prīyamāṇau yudhiṣṭhire। akṣauhiṇībhyāṃ sahitāv āgatau pṛthivīpate॥04-67-16॥
O lord of the earth, the king of Kāśī and the ruler of the Śibi, both pleased with Yudhiṣṭhira, came together with two akṣauhiṇīs (great formations of troops). (04-67-16)
akṣauhiṇyā ca tejasvī yajñaseno mahābalaḥ। draupadyāś ca sutā vīrāḥ śikhaṇḍī cāparājitaḥ॥04-67-17॥
With one akṣauhiṇī division and the brilliant, mighty Yajñasena (Drupada), Draupadī's heroic sons, and the unconquered Śikhaṇḍī. (04-67-17)
dhṛṣṭadyumnaś ca durdharṣaḥ sarvaśastrabhṛtāṃ varaḥ। samastākṣauhiṇīpālā yajvāno bhūridakṣiṇāḥ॥ sarve śastrāstrasampannāḥ sarve śūrās tanut-yajaḥ॥04-67-18॥
Dhṛṣṭadyumna, unconquerable and the foremost among all weapon-bearers, and all the division leaders, who are sacrifice performers and givers of great gifts—all are equipped with weapons and missiles, all are courageous and willing to lay down their lives. (04-67-18)
tān āgatān abhiprekṣya matsyaḥ dharmabhṛtām varaḥ। prītaḥ abhavat duhitaraṃ dattvā tām abhimanyave॥04-67-19॥
Seeing those who had arrived, King Matsya, the best of the righteous, was pleased and gave his daughter to Abhimanyu. (04-67-19)
tataḥ pratyupayāteṣu pārthiveṣu tatastataḥ। tatrāgamad vāsudevo vanamālī halāyudhaḥ ॥ kṛtavarmā ca hārdikyo yuyudhānaś ca sātyakiḥ ॥04-67-20॥
Then, as the kings gathered there, Vāsudeva—adorned with a forest garland and wielding the plough—arrived, along with Kṛtavarmā, Hārdikya, Yuyudhāna, and Sātyaki. (04-67-20)
anādhṛṣṭis tathā krūraḥ sāmbho niśaṭha eva ca। abhimanyum upādāya saha mātrā parantapāḥ ॥04-67-21॥
Anādhṛṣṭi, Krūra, Sāmba, and Niśaṭha, indeed, the subduers of enemies, taking Abhimanyu with his mother, (set out). (04-67-21)
indrasenādayaś caiva rathais taiḥ susamāhitaiḥ। āyayuḥ sahitāḥ sarve parisaṁvatsaroṣitāḥ॥04-67-22॥
Indrasena and the others, with those well-arrayed chariots, all together, having spent a full year, came. (04-67-22)
daśa nāgasahasrāṇi hayānāṃ ca śatāyutam। rathānām arbudaṃ pūrṇaṃ nikhārvaṃ ca padātinām॥04-67-23॥
There were ten thousand elephants, and also a million horses; a complete ten million chariots, and a hundred million foot-soldiers. (04-67-23)
vṛṣṇyandhakāś ca bahavo bhojāś ca paramaujasaḥ। anvayur vṛṣṇiśārdūlaṃ vāsudevaṃ mahādyutim ॥04-67-24॥
The Vṛṣṇis, Andhakas, and many mighty Bhojas followed Vāsudeva, the tiger among the Vṛṣṇis, who possessed great splendor. (04-67-24)
pāribarhaṃ dadau kṛṣṇaḥ pāṇḍavānāṃ mahātmanām. striyo ratnāni vāsāṃsi pṛthakpṛthaganekaśaḥ ॥ tato vivāho vidhivadvavṛte matsya-pārthayoḥ ॥04-67-25॥
Kṛṣṇa gave wedding gifts to the great-souled Pāṇḍavas: women, jewels, and garments, each kind in various ways. Then the marriage of the Matsya princess and Arjuna was performed according to proper rites. (04-67-25)
tataḥ śaṅkhāś ca bheryaś ca gomukhāḍambarās tathā। pārthaiḥ saṃyujyamānasya nedur matsyasya veśmani॥ 04-67-26॥
Then conches, drums, gomukha-horns, and other instruments were loudly played by the sons of Pṛthā, and they resounded throughout the palace of the king of Matsya. (04-67-26)
uccāvacān mṛgāñ jaghnur medhyāṃś ca śataśaḥ paśūn। surā-maireya-pānāni prabhūtāni abhyāharayan ॥04-67-27॥
They killed by the hundreds various animals fit for sacrifice, and brought in great quantities drinks of surā and maireya. (04-67-27)
gāyanākhyānaśīlāś ca naṭā vaitālikās tathā। stuvantas tān upātiṣṭhan sūtāś ca saha māgadhaiḥ॥04-67-28॥
Those adept at singing and storytelling, actors, and bards likewise, together with the Magadhas, and charioteers, praising them, attended upon them. (04-67-28)
sudeṣṇāṃ ca puraskṛtya matsyānāṃ ca varastriyaḥ. ājagmuś cāru sarvāṅgyaḥ sumṛṣṭa-maṇi-kuṇḍalāḥ ॥04-67-29॥
Placing Sudeṣṇā at the forefront, the chief women of the Matsyas, beautiful in every limb and adorned with gleaming gem earrings, came forward. (04-67-29)
varṇopapannās tā nāryo rūpavatyaḥ svalāṅkṛtāḥ। sarvāś cābhyabhavat kṛṣṇā rūpeṇa yaśasā śriyā॥04-67-30॥
Those women, possessing color, beauty, and well adorned, were all surpassed by Kṛṣṇā in beauty, fame, and splendor. (04-67-30)
parivāryottarāṃ tāstu rājaputrīṃ alaṅkṛtām। sutām iva mahendrasya puraskṛtyopatasthire ॥04-67-31॥
They surrounded Uttarā, the adorned princess, placed her at the front like the daughter of Mahendra, and approached.
tāṁ pratyagṛhṇāt kaunteyaḥ sutasya arthe dhanañjayaḥ. saubhadrasya anavadyāṅgīṁ virāṭa-tanayāṁ tadā ॥04-67-32॥
Then Dhananjaya, son of Kunti, for his son (Abhimanyu), accepted the daughter of Virata, she of flawless limbs, for Subhadra’s son. (04-67-32)
tatrātiṣṭhan mahārājo rūpam indrasya dhārayān। snuṣāṃ tāṃ pratijagrāha kuntī-putro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ॥04-67-33॥
There the great king stood assuming the form of Indra. Yudhiṣṭhira, son of Kuntī, accepted her as his daughter-in-law. (4-67-33)
pratigṛhya ca tāṁ pārthaḥ puraskṛtya janārdanam। vivāhaṁ kārayāmāsa saubhadrasya mahātmanaḥ॥04-67-34॥
Having received her and with Janārdana (Kṛṣṇa) at the forefront, Pārtha (Arjuna) arranged the marriage of the noble Saubhadra (Abhimanyu). (04-67-34)
tasmai sapta sahasrāṇi hayānāṃ vātaraṃhasām। dve ca nāgaśate mukhye prādād bahu dhanaṃ tadā ॥04-67-35॥
At that time, he gave him seven thousand wind-swift horses, two hundred excellent elephants, and much wealth. (04-67-35)
kṛte vivāhe tu tadā dharmaputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। brāhmaṇebhyo dadau vittaṃ yad upāharad acyutaḥ॥04-67-36॥
But when the marriage was performed, at that time Dharmaputra Yudhiṣṭhira gave to the Brāhmaṇas the wealth that Acyuta (Kṛṣṇa) had brought. (04-67-36)
gosaḥasrāṇi ratnāni vastrāṇi vividhāni ca। bhūṣaṇāni ca mukhyāni yānāni śayanāni ca ॥04-67-37॥
Thousands of cows, gems, garments of various kinds, ornaments, principal vehicles, and beds.
tan-mahotsava-saṅkāśaṃ hṛṣṭa-puṣṭa-jana-āvṛtam। nagaraṃ matsya-rājasya śuśubhe bharatarṣabha ॥04-67-38॥
O foremost of the Bharatas, that city of the king of the Matsyas, looking like a grand festival and filled with joyful and prosperous people, shone brilliantly. (04-67-38)
