vāsudeva uvāca॥
Vasudeva said:
upapannamidaṁ vākyaṁ somakānāṁ dhurandhare। arthasiddhikaram rājñaḥ pāṇḍavasya mahaujasaḥ ॥5-5-1॥
This statement is fitting for the leader of the Somakas, fulfilling the purpose of the mighty Pandava king.
etacca pūrvakāryaṃ naḥ sunītamabhikāṅkṣatām। anyathā hyācarankarma puruṣaḥ syātsubāliśaḥ ॥5-5-2॥
This and our previous duty should be well-guided. Otherwise, indeed, if a man acts without proper guidance, he would be very foolish.
kiṁ tu sambandhakaṁ tulyamasmākaṁ kurupāṇḍuṣu। yatheṣṭaṁ vartamāneṣu pāṇḍaveṣu ca teṣu ca ॥5-5-3॥
However, what relationship is equal between us and the Kuru and Pandu, as desired among the Pandavas and them?
te vivāhārtham ānītā vayaṃ sarve yathā bhavān। kṛte vivāhe muditā gamiṣyāmo gṛhān prati ॥5-5-4॥
They have been brought here for marriage, as you wished. Once the marriage is completed, we will all happily return to our homes.
bhavānvṛddhatamo rājñāṃ vayasā ca śrutena ca। śiṣyavatte vayaṃ sarve bhavāmeha na saṃśayaḥ ॥5-5-5॥
You are the most senior among the kings in both age and knowledge. We all regard ourselves as your disciples here, without any doubt.
bhavantaṁ dhṛtarāṣṭraśca satataṁ bahu manyate। ācāryayoḥ sakhā cāsi droṇasya ca kṛpasya ca ॥5-5-6॥
Dhritarashtra holds you in high regard at all times. You are a close friend of the teachers, Drona and Kripa.
sa bhavān preṣayatv adya pāṇḍavārthakaraṃ vacaḥ। sarveṣāṃ niścitaṃ tan naḥ preṣayiṣyati yad bhavān ॥5-5-7॥
You should send the message today for the benefit of the Pandavas. It is decided by everyone that you will send it to us.
yadi tāvacchamaṃ kuryānnyāyena kurupuṅgavaḥ। na bhavetkurupāṇḍūnāṃ saubhrātreṇa mahānkṣayaḥ ॥5-5-8॥
If the best of the Kurus were to act justly and make peace, there would not be a great destruction of the Kuru and Pandu families due to their brotherhood.
atha darpānvito mohānna kuryāddhṛtarāṣṭrajaḥ। anyeṣāṃ preṣayitvā ca paścādasmānsamāhvayeḥ ॥5-5-9॥
Then, in his pride and delusion, the son of Dhritarashtra should refrain from acting. After sending others, he should challenge us later.
tato duryodhano mandaḥ sahāmātyaḥ sabāndhavaḥ। niṣṭhāmāpatsyate mūḍhaḥ kruddhe gāṇḍīvadhanvani ॥5-5-10॥
Then the foolish Duryodhana, along with his ministers and relatives, will meet his end, being deluded, when Arjuna, the wielder of the Gandiva bow, is enraged.
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaiśampāyana spoke:
tataḥ satkṛtya vārṣṇeyaṃ virāṭaḥ pṛthivīpatiḥ। gṛhānprasthāpayāmāsa sagaṇaṃ sahabāndhavam ॥5-5-11॥
Then, after honoring Vārṣṇeya, King Virāṭa sent him along with his group and relatives to their homes.
dvārakāṃ tu gate kṛṣṇe yudhiṣṭhirapurogamāḥ। cakruḥ sāṅgrāmikaṃ sarvaṃ virāṭaśca mahīpatiḥ ॥
When Krishna went to Dvaraka, Yudhishthira and others, along with King Virata, prepared everything for the battle.
tataḥ saṃpreṣayāmāsa virāṭaḥ saha bāndhavaiḥ। sarveṣāṃ bhūmipālānāṃ drupadaśca mahīpatiḥ ॥5-5-13॥
Then King Virata, along with his relatives, sent Drupada, the king, to all the other kings.
vacanātkurusiṃhānāṃ matsyapāñcālayośca te। samājagmurmahīpālāḥ samprahṛṣṭā mahābalāḥ ॥5-5-14॥
Upon the command of the Kuru leaders, the kings of the Matsyas and Panchalas gathered, filled with joy and strength.
tacchrutvā pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ samāgacchanmahadbalam। dhṛtarāṣṭrasutaścāpi samāninye mahīpatīn ॥5-5-15॥
Upon hearing this, the sons of Pandu gathered a great army. Meanwhile, the son of Dhritarashtra also assembled the kings.
samākulā mahī rājan kurupāṇḍavakāraṇāt। tadā samabhavatkṛtsnā samprayāṇe mahīkṣitām ॥5-5-16॥
O King, the earth was in distress because of the Kuru and Pandava. At that time, the entire expedition of the rulers occurred.
balāni teṣāṃ vīrāṇām āgacchanti tatas tataḥ। cālayantīva gāṃ devīṃ saparvatavanām imām ॥5-5-17॥
The strengths of those heroes seem to come from all directions, shaking the earth, the goddess with its mountains and forests, as if in a divine dance.
tataḥ prajñāvayovṛddhaṃ pāñcālyaḥ svapurohitam। kurubhyaḥ preṣayāmāsa yudhiṣṭhiramate tadā ॥5-5-18॥
At that time, the wise and aged son of Panchala sent his own priest to the Kauravas with Yudhishthira's approval.
