drupada uvāca॥
Drupada spoke:
bhūtānāṃ prāṇinaḥ śreṣṭhāḥ prāṇināṃ buddhijīvinaḥ। buddhimatsu narāḥ śreṣṭhā narāṇāṃ tu dvijātayaḥ ॥5-6-1॥
Among all beings, living entities are considered superior; among living entities, those with intelligence are superior. Among the intelligent, humans hold the highest position; and among humans, the twice-born are regarded as the most esteemed.
dvijeṣu vaidyāḥ śreyāṃso vaidyeṣu kṛtabuddhayaḥ। sa bhavānkṛtabuddhīnāṃ pradhāna iti me matiḥ ॥5-6-2॥
Among the twice-born, physicians are considered superior, and among physicians, those who are wise are esteemed. You are regarded as the chief among the wise, this is my opinion.
kulena ca viśiṣṭo'si vayasā ca śrutena ca। prajñayānavamaścāsi śukreṇāṅgirasena ca ॥5-6-3॥
You are distinguished by your family, age, and learning, and you are unmatched in wisdom, as well as by Śukra and Aṅgiras.
viditaṁ cāpi te sarvaṁ yathāvṛttaḥ sa kauravaḥ। pāṇḍavaśca yathāvṛttaḥ kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥5-6-4॥
You are aware of everything as it transpired, both the Kaurava and the Pandava, especially Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti.
dhṛtarāṣṭrasya vidite vañcitāḥ pāṇḍavāḥ paraiḥ। vidureṇānunīto'pi putramevānuvartate ॥5-6-5॥
Dhritarashtra was aware that the Pandavas were deceived by others. Despite Vidura's persuasion, he continued to follow only his son.
śakunirbuddhipūrvaṃ hi kuntīputraṃ samāhvayat। anakṣajñaṃ matākṣaḥ sankṣatravṛtte sthitaṃ śucim ॥5-6-6॥
Shakuni, with prior knowledge, indeed called upon Kunti's son, who was unaware of the game of dice, possessing insight, and was steadfast in his warrior duties, pure at heart.
te tathā vañcayitvā tu dharmaputraṃ yudhiṣṭhiram। na kasyāñcidavasthāyāṃ rājyaṃ dāsyanti vai svayam ॥5-6-7॥
They have deceived Dharmaputra Yudhishthira in such a way that they will not give the kingdom to him under any circumstances by themselves.
bhavāṃstu dharmasaṃyuktaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ bruvanvacaḥ। manāṃsi tasya yodhānāṃ dhruvamāvartayiṣyati ॥5-6-8॥
You, however, speaking words of righteousness to Dhritarashtra, will certainly influence the minds of his warriors.
viduraś cāpi tadvākyaṃ sādhayiṣyati tāvakam। bhīṣmadroṇakṛpāṇāṃ ca bhedaṃ sañjanayiṣyati ॥5-6-9॥
Vidura will also fulfill your command and create discord among Bhishma, Drona, and Kripa.
amātyeṣu ca bhinneṣu yodheṣu vimukheṣu ca। punarekāgrakaraṇaṃ teṣāṃ karma bhaviṣyati ॥5-6-10॥
When ministers are divided and warriors are disheartened, their duty will be to unify once more.
etasminnantare pārthāḥ suk hamekāgrabuddhayaḥ। senākarma kariṣyanti dravyāṇāṃ caiva sañcayam ॥5-6-11॥
During this time, the sons of Pritha, with their minds focused, will happily engage in their military duties and gather resources.
bhidyamāneṣu ca sveṣu lambamāne ca vai tvayi। na tathā te kariṣyanti senākarma na saṃśayaḥ ॥5-6-12॥
When their own forces are breaking and relying on you, they will not perform their military duties, without a doubt.
etatprayojanaṃ cātra prādhānyenopalabhyate। saṅgatyā dhṛtarāṣṭraśca kuryāddharmyaṃ vacastava ॥5-6-13॥
The main purpose here is achieved primarily. Through association, Dhritarashtra should follow your righteous advice.
sa bhavāndharmayuktaśca dharmyaṃ teṣu samācaran। kṛpāluṣu parikleśānpāṇḍavānāṃ prakīrtayan ॥5-6-14॥
He, being righteous and acting righteously among them, praises the sufferings of the Pandavas towards the compassionate.
vṛddheṣu kuladharmaṃ ca bruvanpūrvairanuṣṭhitam। vibhetsyati manāṃsyeṣāmiti me nātra saṃśayaḥ ॥5-6-15॥
There is no doubt in my mind that the family duties and traditions practiced by the ancestors and spoken of by the elders will instill fear in the minds of these people.
na ca tebhyo bhayaṃ te'sti brāhmaṇo hyasi vedavit। dūtakarmaṇi yuktaśca sthaviraśca viśeṣataḥ ॥5-6-16॥
You have no reason to fear them, as you are a Brahmin, knowledgeable in the Vedas, and particularly because you are an elder engaged in the duty of a messenger.
sa bhavān puṣyayogena muhūrtena jayena ca। kauraveyān prayātv āśu kaunteyasyārthasiddhaye ॥5-6-17॥
You should quickly go to the Kauravas with the auspicious time, moment, and victory for the accomplishment of the son of Kunti's purpose.
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥
Vaiśampāyana spoke:
tathānuśiṣṭaḥ prayayau drupadena mahātmanā। purodhā vṛttasampanno nagaraṃ nāgasāhvayam ॥5-6-18॥
Having been instructed by the noble Drupada, the virtuous priest set out for the city known as Nāgasāhvaya.
