उत सन्तमसन्तं च बालं वृद्धं च सञ्जय। उताबलं बलीयांसं धाता प्रकुरुते वशे ॥५-३१-१॥
uta santamasantaṃ ca bālaṃ vṛddhaṃ ca sañjaya। utābalaṃ balīyāṃsaṃ dhātā prakurute vaśe ॥5-31-1॥
[उत (uta) - and; सन्तम् (santam) - existent; असन्तं (asantam) - non-existent; च (ca) - and; बालं (bālam) - child; वृद्धं (vṛddham) - old; च (ca) - and; सञ्जय (sañjaya) - Sanjaya; उत (uta) - and; अबलं (abalam) - weak; बलीयांसं (balīyāṃsam) - strong; धाता (dhātā) - creator; प्रकुरुते (prakurute) - makes; वशे (vaśe) - under control;]
(And existent and non-existent, child and old, Sanjaya, and weak and strong, the creator makes under control.)

उत बालाय पाण्डित्यं पण्डितायोत बालताम्। ददाति सर्वमीशानः पुरस्ताच्छुक्रमुच्चरन् ॥५-३१-२॥

अलं विज्ञापनाय स्यादाचक्षीथा यथातथम्। अथो मन्त्रं मन्त्रयित्वा अन्योन्येनातिहृष्टवत् ॥५-३१-३॥
alaṁ vijñāpanāya syādācakṣīthā yathātatham। atho mantraṁ mantrayitvā anyonyenātihṛṣṭavat ॥5-31-3॥

(By your grace, O subduer of foes, the young ones have obtained the kingdom. Having established them in the kingdom, do not neglect them, for they will perish.)

(All this is not enough for one, O Sanjaya, of anyone. O father, we live together, do not go under the control of enemies.)

तथा भीष्मं शान्तनवं भारतानां पितामहम्। शिरसाभिवदेथास्त्वं मम नाम प्रकीर्तयन् ॥५-३१-८॥
tathā bhīṣmaṃ śāntanavaṃ bhāratānāṃ pitāmaham। śirasābhivadethāstvaṃ mama nāma prakīrtayan ॥5-31-8॥

tathaiva viduraṃ brūyāḥ kurūṇāṃ mantradhāriṇam। ayuddhaṃ saumya bhāṣasva hitakāmo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥5-31-11॥

alameva śamāyāsmi tathā yuddhāya sañjaya। dharmārthayoralaṃ cāhaṃ mṛdave dāruṇāya ca ॥5-31-23॥
[अलम् (alam) - enough; एव (eva) - indeed; शमाय (śamāya) - for peace; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; तथा (tathā) - and; युद्धाय (yuddhāya) - for war; सञ्जय (sañjaya) - O Sañjaya; धर्मार्थयोः (dharmārthayoḥ) - for righteousness and wealth; अलम् (alam) - enough; च (ca) - and; अहम् (aham) - I; मृदवे (mṛdave) - for gentleness; दारुणाय (dāruṇāya) - for harshness; च (ca) - and;]
(Enough indeed I am for peace and for war, O Sañjaya. Enough I am for righteousness and wealth, for gentleness and harshness.)
