yasya vai nānṛtā vācaḥ pravṛttā anuśuśrumaḥ। trailokyamapi tasya syādyoddhā yasya dhanañjayaḥ ॥5-51-1॥
[यस्य (yasya) - whose; वै (vai) - indeed; न (na) - not; अनृता (anṛtā) - false; वाचः (vācaḥ) - words; प्रवृत्ता (pravṛttā) - uttered; अनुशुश्रुमः (anuśuśrumaḥ) - we have heard; त्रैलोक्यम् (trailokyam) - three worlds; अपि (api) - even; तस्य (tasya) - his; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; योद्धा (yoddhā) - warrior; यस्य (yasya) - whose; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhananjaya (Arjuna);]
(Indeed, we have heard that words which are not false are uttered by him; even the three worlds would be his whose warrior is Dhananjaya (Arjuna).)
We have heard that he speaks only the truth, and if Dhananjaya (Arjuna) is his warrior, even the three worlds would be his.
तस्यैव च न पश्यामि युधि गाण्डीवधन्वनः। अनिशं चिन्तयानोऽपि यः प्रतीयाद्रथेन तम् ॥५-५१-२॥
tasyaiva ca na paśyāmi yudhi gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ। aniśaṃ cintayāno'pi yaḥ pratīyādrathena tam ॥5-51-2॥
[तस्यैव (tasyaiva) - of him only; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; गाण्डीवधन्वनः (gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ) - of the Gandiva-bow wielder; अनिशं (aniśam) - constantly; चिन्तयानः (cintayānaḥ) - thinking; अपि (api) - even; यः (yaḥ) - who; प्रतीयात् (pratīyāt) - would appear; रथेन (rathena) - with a chariot; तम् (tam) - him;]
(Of him only, and not do I see in battle the Gandiva-bow wielder. Constantly thinking, even who would appear with a chariot, him.)
I do not see the wielder of the Gandiva bow in battle, even though I constantly think of him who would appear with a chariot.
अस्यतः कर्णिनालीकान्मार्गणान्हृदयच्छिदः। प्रत्येता न समः कश्चिद्युधि गाण्डीवधन्वनः ॥५-५१-३॥
asyataḥ karṇinālīkānmārgaṇānhṛdayacchidaḥ। pratyetā na samaḥ kaścidyudhi gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ ॥5-51-3॥
[अस्यतः (asyataḥ) - shooting; कर्णिनालीकान् (karṇinālīkān) - arrows; मार्गणान् (mārgaṇān) - shafts; हृदयच्छिदः (hṛdayacchidaḥ) - heart-piercing; प्रत्येता (pratyetā) - counter; न (na) - not; समः (samaḥ) - equal; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; गाण्डीवधन्वनः (gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ) - of the Gandiva-bowed;]
(Shooting arrows and shafts that pierce the heart, there is no one equal to counter the Gandiva-bowed in battle.)
There is no one in battle who can match the prowess of the Gandiva-bowed archer, whose arrows pierce the heart.
द्रोणकर्णौ प्रतीयातां यदि वीरौ नरर्षभौ। माहात्म्यात्संशयो लोके न त्वस्ति विजयो मम ॥५-५१-४॥
droṇakarṇau pratīyātāṃ yadi vīrau nararṣabhau। māhātmyātsaṃśayo loke na tvasti vijayo mama ॥5-51-4॥
[द्रोण (droṇa) - Drona; कर्णौ (karṇau) - Karna; प्रतीयातां (pratīyātāṃ) - may be considered; यदि (yadi) - if; वीरौ (vīrau) - heroes; नरर्षभौ (nararṣabhau) - bulls among men; माहात्म्यात् (māhātmyāt) - due to greatness; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; लोके (loke) - in the world; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; अस्ति (asti) - is; विजयः (vijayaḥ) - victory; मम (mama) - my;]
(Drona and Karna may be considered as heroes, bulls among men; due to greatness, there is doubt in the world, but not my victory.)
If Drona and Karna are considered heroes, the best among men, then due to their greatness, there is doubt in the world, but my victory is certain.
घृणी कर्णः प्रमादी च आचार्यः स्थविरो गुरुः। समर्थो बलवान्पार्थो दृढधन्वा जितक्लमः ॥ भवेत्सुतुमुलं युद्धं सर्वशोऽप्यपराजयः ॥५-५१-५॥
ghṛṇī karṇaḥ pramādī ca ācāryaḥ sthaviro guruḥ। samartho balavānpārtho dṛḍhadhanvā jitaklamaḥ ॥ bhavetsutumulaṃ yuddhaṃ sarvaśo'pyaparājayaḥ ॥5-51-5॥
[घृणी (ghṛṇī) - compassionate; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; प्रमादी (pramādī) - careless; च (ca) - and; आचार्यः (ācāryaḥ) - teacher; स्थविरः (sthaviraḥ) - old; गुरुः (guruḥ) - guru; समर्थः (samarthaḥ) - capable; बलवान् (balavān) - strong; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Arjuna; दृढधन्वा (dṛḍhadhanvā) - firm-bowed; जितक्लमः (jitaklamaḥ) - conqueror of fatigue; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; सुतुमुलं (sutumulaṃ) - very tumultuous; युद्धं (yuddhaṃ) - battle; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - in every way; अपि (api) - also; अपराजयः (aparājayaḥ) - undefeatable;]
(Compassionate Karṇa, careless and teacher, old guru. Capable, strong Arjuna, firm-bowed, conqueror of fatigue. Would be a very tumultuous battle, in every way also undefeatable.)
The compassionate Karṇa, though careless, is a teacher and an old guru. Arjuna, strong and capable, with a firm bow and conqueror of fatigue, would make the battle very tumultuous and in every way undefeatable.
सर्वे ह्यस्त्रविदः शूराः सर्वे प्राप्ता महद्यशः। अपि सर्वामरैश्वर्यं त्यजेयुर्न पुनर्जयम् ॥ वधे नूनं भवेच्छान्तिस्तयोर्वा फल्गुनस्य वा ॥५-५१-६॥
sarve hyastravidaḥ śūrāḥ sarve prāptā mahadyaśaḥ। api sarvāmaraaiśvaryaṃ tyajeyurna punarjayam ॥ vadhe nūnaṃ bhavecchāntistayorvā phalgunasya vā ॥5-51-6॥
[सर्वे (sarve) - all; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्त्रविदः (astravidaḥ) - knowers of weapons; शूराः (śūrāḥ) - heroes; सर्वे (sarve) - all; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - attained; महत् (mahat) - great; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; अपि (api) - even; सर्व (sarva) - all; अमर (amara) - immortal; ऐश्वर्यम् (aiśvaryam) - wealth; त्यजेयुः (tyajeyuḥ) - would abandon; न (na) - not; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; जयम् (jayam) - victory; वधे (vadhe) - in killing; नूनम् (nūnam) - certainly; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; शान्तिः (śāntiḥ) - peace; तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; वा (vā) - or; फल्गुनस्य (phalgunasya) - of Arjuna; वा (vā) - or;]
(All indeed are knowers of weapons, heroes, all have attained great fame. Even all the wealth of the immortals they would abandon, not victory again. In killing certainly there would be peace of those two or of Arjuna.)
All are indeed skilled in weaponry and are heroes, having attained great fame. They would abandon even all the wealth of the immortals, but not victory again. Certainly, in killing, there would be peace for either of those two or for Arjuna.
न तु जेतार्जुनस्यास्ति हन्ता चास्य न विद्यते। मन्युस्तस्य कथं शाम्येन्मन्दान्प्रति य उत्थितः ॥५-५१-७॥
na tu jetārjunasyaasti hantā cāsya na vidyate। manyustasya kathaṁ śāmyenmandānprati ya utthitaḥ ॥5-51-7॥
[न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; जेतार्जुनस्य (jetārjunasya) - of the conqueror Arjuna; अस्ति (asti) - there is; हन्ता (hantā) - a slayer; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - of him; न (na) - not; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; मन्युः (manyuḥ) - anger; तस्य (tasya) - of him; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; शाम्येत् (śāmyet) - can be calmed; मन्दान् (mandān) - fools; प्रति (prati) - towards; यः (yaḥ) - who; उत्थितः (utthitaḥ) - has arisen;]
(But there is no slayer of the conqueror Arjuna, nor does he exist. How can his anger be calmed towards the fools who have arisen?)
However, there is no one who can defeat Arjuna, nor does such a person exist. How can his anger be pacified towards those foolish ones who have risen against him?
अन्येऽप्यस्त्राणि जानन्ति जीयन्ते च जयन्ति च। एकान्तविजयस्त्वेव श्रूयते फल्गुनस्य ह ॥५-५१-८॥
anye'pyastrāṇi jānanti jīyante ca jayanti ca। ekāntavijayastveva śrūyate phalgunasya ha ॥5-51-8॥
[अन्ये (anye) - others; अपि (api) - also; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; जानन्ति (jānanti) - know; जीयन्ते (jīyante) - are defeated; च (ca) - and; जयन्ति (jayanti) - conquer; च (ca) - and; एकान्तविजयः (ekāntavijayaḥ) - absolute victory; तु (tu) - but; एव (eva) - indeed; श्रूयते (śrūyate) - is heard; फल्गुनस्य (phalgunasya) - of Arjuna; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Others also know weapons, are defeated and conquer. But absolute victory is indeed heard of Arjuna.)
Others also know the use of weapons, experience defeat and victory. However, it is said that Arjuna alone is known for absolute victory.
त्रयस्त्रिंशत्समाहूय खाण्डवेऽग्निमतर्पयत्। जिगाय च सुरान्सर्वान्नास्य वेद्मि पराजयम् ॥५-५१-९॥
trayastriṁśatsamāhūya khāṇḍave'gnimatarpayat। jigāya ca surānsarvānnāsya vedmi parājayam ॥5-51-9॥
[त्रयस्त्रिंशत् (trayastrinśat) - thirty-three; समाहूय (samāhūya) - having summoned; खाण्डवे (khāṇḍave) - in Khāṇḍava; अग्निम् (agnim) - fire; अतर्पयत् (atarpayat) - satisfied; जिगाय (jigāya) - conquered; च (ca) - and; सुरान् (surān) - the gods; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; न (na) - not; अस्य (asya) - his; वेद्मि (vedmi) - I know; पराजयम् (parājayam) - defeat;]
(Having summoned the thirty-three, he satisfied the fire in Khāṇḍava. And he conquered all the gods; I know not his defeat.)
Having summoned the thirty-three deities, he satisfied the fire in the Khāṇḍava forest and conquered all the gods. I do not know of his defeat.
यस्य यन्ता हृषीकेशः शीलवृत्तसमो युधि। ध्रुवस्तस्य जयस्तात यथेन्द्रस्य जयस्तथा ॥५-५१-१०॥
yasya yantā hṛṣīkeśaḥ śīlavṛttasamo yudhi। dhruvastasya jayastāta yathendrasya jayastathā ॥5-51-10॥
[यस्य (yasya) - whose; यन्ता (yantā) - charioteer; हृषीकेशः (hṛṣīkeśaḥ) - Hṛṣīkeśa (Krishna); शीलवृत्तसमः (śīlavṛttasamaḥ) - equal in conduct and character; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; ध्रुवः (dhruvaḥ) - certain; तस्य (tasya) - his; जयः (jayaḥ) - victory; तात (tāta) - O dear; यथा (yathā) - as; इन्द्रस्य (indrasya) - of Indra; जयः (jayaḥ) - victory; तथा (tathā) - so too;]
(Whose charioteer is Hṛṣīkeśa, equal in conduct and character in battle, his victory is certain, O dear, just as the victory of Indra.)
The one whose charioteer is Lord Krishna, who is equal in conduct and character in battle, is assured of victory, dear one, just as Indra is assured of victory.
कृष्णावेकरथे यत्तावधिज्यं गाण्डिवं धनुः। युगपत्त्रीणि तेजांसि समेतान्यनुशुश्रुमः ॥५-५१-११॥
kṛṣṇāvekarathe yattāvadhijyaṃ gāṇḍivaṃ dhanuḥ। yugapattrīṇi tejāṃsi sametānyanuśuśrumaḥ ॥5-51-11॥
[कृष्णा (kṛṣṇā) - Krishna; एक (eka) - one; रथे (rathe) - on the chariot; यत् (yat) - which; तावत् (tāvat) - so much; धिज्यं (dhijyaṃ) - bowstring; गाण्डिवं (gāṇḍivaṃ) - Gandiva; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; युगपत् (yugapat) - simultaneously; त्रीणि (trīṇi) - three; तेजांसि (tejāṃsi) - powers; समेतानि (sametāni) - combined; अनुशुश्रुमः (anuśuśrumaḥ) - we have heard;]
(On the chariot with Krishna, the Gandiva bowstring, simultaneously, we have heard of the three combined powers.)

नैव नोऽस्ति धनुस्तादृङ्न योद्धा न च सारथिः। तच्च मन्दा न जानन्ति दुर्योधनवशानुगाः ॥५-५१-१२॥
naiva no'sti dhanustādṛṅna yoddhā na ca sārathiḥ। tacca mandā na jānanti duryodhanavaśānugāḥ ॥5-51-12॥
[नैव (naiva) - neither; नः (naḥ) - our; अस्ति (asti) - is; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; तादृक् (tādṛk) - such; न (na) - nor; योद्धा (yoddhā) - warrior; न (na) - nor; च (ca) - and; सारथिः (sārathiḥ) - charioteer; तत् (tat) - that; च (ca) - and; मन्दाः (mandāḥ) - fools; न (na) - not; जानन्ति (jānanti) - know; दुर्योधन (duryodhana) - Duryodhana; वश (vaśa) - control; अनुगाः (anugāḥ) - followers;]
(Neither is our bow such, nor a warrior, nor a charioteer. And those fools do not know, being followers under the control of Duryodhana.)

शेषयेदशनिर्दीप्तो निपतन्मूर्ध्नि सञ्जय। न तु शेषं शराः कुर्युरस्तास्तात किरीटिना ॥५-५१-१३॥
śeṣayed aśanirdīpto nipatan mūrdhni sañjaya। na tu śeṣaṃ śarāḥ kuryur astāstāta kirīṭinā ॥5-51-13॥
[शेषयेत् (śeṣayet) - may remain; अशनिः (aśaniḥ) - thunderbolt; दीप्तः (dīptaḥ) - blazing; निपतन् (nipatan) - falling; मूर्ध्नि (mūrdhni) - on the head; सञ्जय (sañjaya) - Sanjaya; न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; शेषम् (śeṣam) - remains; शराः (śarāḥ) - arrows; कुर्युः (kuryuḥ) - would do; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; तात (tāta) - dear; किरीटिना (kirīṭinā) - by Arjuna;]
(May the blazing thunderbolt fall on the head, O Sanjaya, but let not the arrows remain by Arjuna, dear.)

(Also, Arjuna appears as if eating, as if striking, and as if lifting heads from bodies with showers of arrows.)
Arjuna seems to be consuming, striking, and lifting heads from bodies with his showers of arrows.
अपि बाणमयं तेजः प्रदीप्तमिव सर्वतः। गाण्डीवेद्धं दहेताजौ पुत्राणां मम वाहिनीम् ॥५-५१-१५॥
api bāṇamayaṃ tejaḥ pradīptamiva sarvataḥ। gāṇḍīveddhaṃ dahetājau putrāṇāṃ mama vāhinīm ॥5-51-15॥
[अपि (api) - whether; बाणमयम् (bāṇamayam) - consisting of arrows; तेजः (tejaḥ) - energy; प्रदीप्तम् (pradīptam) - blazing; इव (iva) - like; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - everywhere; गाण्डीवेद्धम् (gāṇḍīveddham) - pierced by the Gandiva bow; दहेत (dahet) - burn; अजौ (ajau) - in battle; पुत्राणाम् (putrāṇām) - of the sons; मम (mama) - my; वाहिनीम् (vāhinīm) - army;]
(Whether the energy consisting of arrows, blazing like everywhere, pierced by the Gandiva bow, would burn in battle the army of my sons.)
The blazing energy of arrows, like a fire, pierced by the Gandiva bow, might consume my sons' army in battle.
अपि सा रथघोषेण भयार्ता सव्यसाचिनः। वित्रस्ता बहुला सेना भारती प्रतिभाति मे ॥५-५१-१६॥
api sā rathaghoṣeṇa bhayārtā savyasācinaḥ। vitrastā bahulā senā bhāratī pratibhāti me ॥5-51-16॥
[अपि (api) - also; सा (sā) - she; रथघोषेण (rathaghoṣeṇa) - by the noise of the chariot; भयार्ता (bhayārtā) - afflicted by fear; सव्यसाचिनः (savyasācinaḥ) - of Arjuna; वित्रस्ता (vitrastā) - terrified; बहुला (bahulā) - numerous; सेना (senā) - army; भारती (bhāratī) - eloquence; प्रतिभाति (pratibhāti) - appears; मे (me) - to me;]
(Also, she, afflicted by fear due to the noise of the chariot of Arjuna, the numerous army appears terrified to me.)
The eloquence of the numerous army, frightened by the noise of Arjuna's chariot, seems apparent to me.
यथा कक्षं दहत्यग्निः प्रवृद्धः सर्वतश्चरन्। महार्चिरनिलोद्धूतस्तद्वद्धक्ष्यति मामकान् ॥५-५१-१७॥
yathā kakṣaṃ dahatyagniḥ pravṛddhaḥ sarvataścaran। mahārciraniloddhūtastadvaddhakṣyati māmakān ॥5-51-17॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; कक्षं (kakṣam) - dry wood; दहति (dahati) - burns; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; प्रवृद्धः (pravṛddhaḥ) - grown; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - everywhere; चरन् (caran) - moving; महार्चिः (mahārciḥ) - with great flames; अनिल (anila) - wind; उद्धूतः (uddhūtaḥ) - fanned; तद्वत् (tadvat) - so; दक्ष्यति (dakṣyati) - will burn; मामकान् (māmakān) - my people;]
(As fire, grown and moving everywhere, burns dry wood, fanned by the wind with great flames, so will it burn my people.)
Just as a fire, intensified and spreading everywhere, consumes dry wood when fanned by the wind with great flames, so too will it consume my people.
यदोद्वमन्निशितान्बाणसङ्घा; न्स्थाताततायी समरे किरीटी। सृष्टोऽन्तकः सर्वहरो विधात्रा; यथा भवेत्तद्वदवारणीयः ॥५-५१-१८॥
yadodvamanniśitānbāṇasaṅghā; nsthātātatāyī samare kirīṭī। sṛṣṭo'ntakaḥ sarvaharo vidhātrā; yathā bhavettadvadavāraṇīyaḥ ॥5-51-18॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; उद्वमन् (udvaman) - releasing; निशितान् (niśitān) - sharp; बाणसङ्घान् (bāṇasaṅghān) - arrows; स्थाता (sthātā) - standing; अततायी (atatāyī) - aggressor; समरे (samare) - in battle; किरीटी (kirīṭī) - the crowned one; सृष्टः (sṛṣṭaḥ) - created; अन्तकः (antakaḥ) - destroyer; सर्वहरः (sarvaharaḥ) - all-destroying; विधात्रा (vidhātrā) - by the creator; यथा (yathā) - as; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; तद्वत् (tadvat) - so; अवारणीयः (avāraṇīyaḥ) - unstoppable;]
(When the crowned one, releasing sharp arrows, stands as an aggressor in battle, created by the creator as an all-destroying destroyer, so would be unstoppable.)
When the crowned warrior releases sharp arrows in battle, he stands as an unstoppable force, created by the divine as a destroyer of all.
यदा ह्यभीक्ष्णं सुबहून्प्रकारा; ञ्श्रोतास्मि तानावसथे कुरूणाम्। तेषां समन्ताच्च तथा रणाग्रे; क्षयः किलायं भरतानुपैति ॥५-५१-१९॥
yadā hyabhīkṣṇaṃ subahūnprakārā; ñśrotāsmi tānāvasathe kurūṇām। teṣāṃ samantācca tathā raṇāgre; kṣayaḥ kilāyaṃ bharatānupaiti ॥5-51-19॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; हि (hi) - indeed; अभीक्ष्णम् (abhīkṣṇam) - frequently; सुबहून् (subahūn) - many; प्रकारान् (prakārān) - types; श्रोतास्मि (śrotāsmi) - I hear; तान् (tān) - them; आवसथे (āvasathe) - in the abode; कुरूणाम् (kurūṇām) - of the Kurus; तेषाम् (teṣām) - their; समन्तात् (samantāt) - all around; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - thus; रणाग्रे (raṇāgre) - at the forefront of battle; क्षयः (kṣayaḥ) - destruction; किल (kila) - indeed; अयम् (ayam) - this; भरतानुपैति (bharatānupaiti) - befalls the Bharatas;]
(When indeed I frequently hear many types of them in the abode of the Kurus, their destruction indeed befalls the Bharatas all around and thus at the forefront of battle.)
When I frequently hear about the various types of them in the abode of the Kurus, it is said that their destruction surrounds the Bharatas, especially at the forefront of battle.
