Pancharatra-Ext: Battle continues for a second day, with no winners.

भीष्म उवाच॥

Bhishma spoke:

आत्मनस्तु ततः सूतो हयानां च विशां पते। मम चापनयामास शल्यान्कुशलसंमतः ॥५-१८१-१॥

ātmanastu tataḥ sūto hayānāṃ ca viśāṃ pate। mama cāpanayāmāsa śalyānkuśalasaṃmataḥ ॥5-181-1॥

[आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of the self; तु (tu) - but; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सूतः (sūtaḥ) - the charioteer; हयानाम् (hayānām) - of the horses; च (ca) - and; विशाम् (viśām) - of the people; पते (pate) - O lord; मम (mama) - my; च (ca) - and; अपनयामास (apanayāmāsa) - removed; शल्यान् (śalyān) - the impediments; कुशलसंमतः (kuśalasaṃmataḥ) - approved by the wise;]

(But then, O lord of the people, the charioteer, approved by the wise, removed the impediments of the horses and mine.)

Then, O lord of the people, the wise-approved charioteer removed the obstacles from the horses and myself.

स्नातोपवृत्तैस्तुरगैर्लब्धतोयैरविह्वलैः। प्रभात उदिते सूर्ये ततो युद्धमवर्तत ॥५-१८१-२॥

snātopavṛttais turagair labdhato yair avihvalaiḥ। prabhāta udite sūrye tato yuddham avartata ॥5-181-2॥

[स्नातोपवृत्तैः (snātopavṛttaiḥ) - bathed and returned; तुरगैः (turagaiḥ) - by horses; लब्धतोयैः (labdhato yaiḥ) - having obtained water; अविह्वलैः (avihvalaiḥ) - unperturbed; प्रभात (prabhāta) - morning; उदिते (udite) - risen; सूर्ये (sūrye) - sun; ततः (tataḥ) - then; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; अवर्तत (avartata) - commenced;]

(The battle commenced then, with the horses bathed and returned, having obtained water, unperturbed, as the sun rose in the morning.)

As the sun rose in the morning, the battle began with the horses, who were bathed, refreshed, and unperturbed after having quenched their thirst.

दृष्ट्वा मां तूर्णमायान्तं दंशितं स्यन्दने स्थितम्। अकरोद्रथमत्यर्थं रामः सज्जं प्रतापवान् ॥५-१८१-३॥

dṛṣṭvā māṃ tūrṇam āyāntaṃ daṃśitaṃ syandane sthitam। akarod ratham atyarthaṃ rāmaḥ sajjaṃ pratāpavān ॥

[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; माम् (mām) - me; तूर्णम् (tūrṇam) - quickly; आयान्तम् (āyāntam) - coming; दंशितम् (daṃśitam) - bitten; स्यन्दने (syandane) - in the chariot; स्थितम् (sthitam) - standing; अकरोत् (akarot) - made; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; अत्यर्थम् (atyartham) - very much; रामः (rāmaḥ) - Rama; सज्जम् (sajjam) - ready; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - glorious;]

(Having seen me coming quickly, bitten, standing in the chariot, Rama made the chariot very much ready, glorious.)

Seeing me coming quickly and standing in the chariot, Rama, the glorious one, prepared the chariot with great readiness.

ततोऽहं राममायान्तं दृष्ट्वा समरकाङ्क्षिणम्। धनुःश्रेष्ठं समुत्सृज्य सहसावतरं रथात् ॥५-१८१-४॥

tato'haṃ rāmam āyāntaṃ dṛṣṭvā samarakāṅkṣiṇam। dhanuḥśreṣṭhaṃ samutsṛjya sahasāvataraṃ rathāt ॥5-181-4॥

(Then I, having seen Rama coming, eager for battle, suddenly abandoned the best of bows and descended from the chariot.)

Then, seeing Rama approaching with eagerness for battle, I suddenly abandoned my best bow and descended from the chariot.

अभिवाद्य तथैवाहं रथमारुह्य भारत। युयुत्सुर्जामदग्न्यस्य प्रमुखे वीतभीः स्थितः ॥५-१८१-५॥

abhivādya tathaivāhaṃ rathamāruhya bhārata। yuyutsurjāmadagnyasya pramukhe vītabhīḥ sthitaḥ ॥5-181-5॥

[अभिवाद्य (abhivādya) - having saluted; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; अहम् (aham) - I; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; आरुह्य (āruhya) - having ascended; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata; युयुत्सुः (yuyutsuḥ) - desiring to fight; जामदग्न्यस्य (jāmadagnyasya) - of Jamadagni's descendant; प्रमुखे (pramukhe) - in front; वीतभीः (vītabhīḥ) - fearless; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - stood;]

(Having saluted, in the same way, I ascended the chariot, O Bharata, desiring to fight, stood fearless in front of Jamadagni's descendant.)

After offering salutations, I too ascended the chariot, O Bharata, and stood fearlessly in front of Jamadagni's descendant, ready to fight.

ततो मां शरवर्षेण महता समवाकिरत्। अहं च शरवर्षेण वर्षन्तं समवाकिरम् ॥५-१८१-६॥

tato māṁ śaravarṣeṇa mahatā samavākirat। ahaṁ ca śaravarṣeṇa varṣantaṁ samavākiram ॥5-181-6॥

[ततः (tataḥ) - then; माम् (mām) - me; शरवर्षेण (śaravarṣeṇa) - with a shower of arrows; महता (mahatā) - great; समवाकिरत् (samavākirat) - covered; अहम् (aham) - I; च (ca) - and; शरवर्षेण (śaravarṣeṇa) - with a shower of arrows; वर्षन्तम् (varṣantam) - raining; समवाकिरम् (samavākiram) - covered;]

(Then he covered me with a great shower of arrows. And I covered him, who was raining arrows.)

Then he attacked me with a great shower of arrows, and I retaliated by covering him with arrows as well.

सङ्क्रुद्धो जामदग्न्यस्तु पुनरेव पतत्रिणः। प्रेषयामास मे राजन्दीप्तास्यानुरगानिव ॥५-१८१-७॥

saṅkruddho jāmadagnyastu punareva patatriṇaḥ। preṣayāmāsa me rājandīptāsyānuragāniva ॥5-181-7॥

[सङ्क्रुद्धः (saṅkruddhaḥ) - angry; जामदग्न्यः (jāmadagnyaḥ) - Jamadagni's son; तु (tu) - but; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एव (eva) - indeed; पतत्रिणः (patatriṇaḥ) - bird; प्रेषयामास (preṣayāmāsa) - sent; मे (me) - my; राजन् (rājan) - O king; दीप्तास्य (dīptāsya) - with a blazing face; अनुरगानिव (anuragāniva) - like love;]

(Angry Jamadagni's son, however, again indeed sent the bird, O king, with a blazing face, like love.)

तानहं निशितैर्भल्लैः शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः। अच्छिदं सहसा राजन्नन्तरिक्षे पुनः पुनः ॥५-१८१-८॥

tān ahaṃ niśitair bhallaiḥ śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ। acchidaṃ sahasā rājann antarikṣe punaḥ punaḥ ॥5-181-8॥

[तान् (tān) - them; अहम् (aham) - I; निशितैः (niśitaiḥ) - sharp; भल्लैः (bhallaiḥ) - arrows; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - by hundreds; अथ (atha) - and then; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands; अच्छिदम् (acchidam) - cut; सहसा (sahasā) - quickly; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अन्तरिक्षे (antarikṣe) - in the sky; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]

(Them I cut quickly with sharp arrows by hundreds and then by thousands, O king, in the sky again and again.)

ततस्त्वस्त्राणि दिव्यानि जामदग्न्यः प्रतापवान्। मयि प्रचोदयामास तान्यहं प्रत्यषेधयम् ॥५-१८१-९॥

tatastvastrāṇi divyāni jāmadagnyaḥ pratāpavān। mayi pracodayāmāsa tānyahaṃ pratyaṣedhayam ॥5-181-9॥

(Then the powerful Jamadagnya urged those divine weapons to me, but I restrained them.)

(With weapons only, O mighty-armed, desiring to perform excessive action, then in the sky a great sound appeared all around.)

(Then I employed the wind weapon against Jamadagni's son. And Rama countered that with the secret weapon, O Bharata.)

(Then I employed the Agneya weapon, having invoked it. Rama indeed warded it off with the Varuna weapon, my lord.)

(Thus, I warded off the divine weapons of Rāma. And Rāma, my brilliant, divine weapon-knower, subduer of enemies.)

Thus, I warded off Rāma's divine weapons. Rāma, who is brilliant and a master of divine weapons, is a subduer of enemies.

ततो मां सव्यतो राजन्रामः कुर्वन्द्विजोत्तमः। उरस्यविध्यत्सङ्क्रुद्धो जामदग्न्यो महाबलः ॥५-१८१-१४॥

tato māṃ savyato rājanrāmaḥ kurvandvijottamaḥ। urasyavidhyatsaṅkruddho jāmadagnyo mahābalaḥ ॥5-181-14॥

(Then, O king, Rama, the best of the twice-born, very angry, pierced me in the chest from the left, the mighty son of Jamadagni.)

(Then I, O best of Bharatas, sat down on the excellent chariot. Then the charioteer quickly carried me away, overcome with faintness, O best of Bharatas, afflicted by Rama's arrows, with the sound of cows.)

(Then, seeing me greatly wounded and unconscious, the delighted followers of Rama all cried out. The unwounded and others, and the daughter of Kashi, O Bharata.)

ततस्तु लब्धसञ्ज्ञोऽहं ज्ञात्वा सूतमथाब्रुवम्। याहि सूत यतो रामः सज्जोऽहं गतवेदनः ॥५-१८१-१७॥

tatastu labdhasaṁjño'haṁ jñātvā sūtamathābruvam। yāhi sūta yato rāmaḥ sajjo'haṁ gatavedanaḥ ॥5-181-17॥

(Then, having regained consciousness, I said to the charioteer, "Go, charioteer, to where Rama is; I am ready and free from pain.")

Then, having regained my senses, I instructed the charioteer to proceed to where Rama was, as I was prepared and no longer in pain.

ततो मामवहत्सूतो हयैः परमशोभितैः। नृत्यद्भिरिव कौरव्य मारुतप्रतिमैर्गतौ ॥५-१८१-१८॥

tato māmavahatsūto hayaḥ paramaśobhitaiḥ। nṛtyadbhiriva kauravya mārutapratimairgatau ॥5-181-18॥

[ततः (tataḥ) - then; माम् (mām) - me; अवहत् (avahat) - carried; सूतः (sūtaḥ) - charioteer; हयैः (hayaiḥ) - by horses; परमशोभितैः (paramaśobhitaiḥ) - extremely splendid; नृत्यद्भिः (nṛtyadbhiḥ) - dancing; इव (iva) - like; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; मारुत (māruta) - wind; प्रतिमैः (pratimaiḥ) - like; गतौ (gatau) - in speed;]

(Then the charioteer carried me with horses that were extremely splendid, like dancing, O descendant of Kuru, with the speed of the wind.)

ततोऽहं राममासाद्य बाणजालेन कौरव। अवाकिरं सुसंरब्धः संरब्धं विजिगीषया ॥५-१८१-१९॥

tato'haṁ rāmamāsādya bāṇajālena kaurava। avākiraṁ susaṁrabdhaḥ saṁrabdhaṁ vijigīṣayā ॥5-181-19॥

(Then I, O Kaurava, having approached Rama, covered him with a net of arrows, very enraged, with the desire to conquer.)

तानापतत एवासौ रामो बाणानजिह्मगान्। बाणैरेवाच्छिनत्तूर्णमेकैकं त्रिभिराहवे ॥५-१८१-२०॥

tānāpatata evāsau rāmo bāṇānajihmagān। bāṇairevācchinatturnamekaikaṃ tribhirāhave ॥5-181-20॥

(Rama indeed cut off those approaching straight-moving arrows quickly with three arrows each in battle.)

ततस्ते मृदिताः सर्वे मम बाणाः सुसंशिताः। रामबाणैर्द्विधा छिन्नाः शतशोऽथ महाहवे ॥५-१८१-२१॥

tataste mṛditāḥ sarve mama bāṇāḥ susanśitāḥ। rāma-bāṇair-dvidhā chinnāḥ śataśo'tha mahāhave ॥5-181-21॥

(Then they, all my well-sharpened arrows, were crushed, cut in two by Rama's arrows, in hundreds, then in the great battle.)

(Then, hundreds of thousands, ten millions, and hundred millions, then ten thousands, trillions, and quadrillions, O Kaurava, Rama, angry, quickly discharged arrows at me.)

evaṃ tadabhavadyuddhaṃ tadā bharatasattama। sandhyākāle vyatīte tu vyapāyātsa ca me guruḥ ॥5-181-36॥

(Thus, that battle happened then, O best of the Bharatas. At twilight having passed, he, my teacher, departed.)
