बृहतीं धार्तराष्ट्राणां दृष्ट्वा सेनां समुद्यताम्। विषादमगमद्राजा कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः ॥६-२१-१॥
bṛhatīṃ dhārtarāṣṭrāṇāṃ dṛṣṭvā senāṃ samudyatām। viṣādamagamad rājā kuntīputro yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥6-21-1॥
[बृहतीं (bṛhatīm) - great; धार्तराष्ट्राणां (dhārtarāṣṭrāṇām) - of the sons of Dhritarashtra; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सेनां (senām) - army; समुद्यताम् (samudyatām) - prepared; विषादम् (viṣādam) - despair; अगमत् (agamat) - attained; राजा (rājā) - king; कुन्तीपुत्रः (kuntīputraḥ) - son of Kunti; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira;]
(Having seen the great army of the sons of Dhritarashtra prepared, King Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, attained despair.)
Upon witnessing the formidable and prepared army of the Kauravas, King Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, was overcome with despair.
व्यूहं भीष्मेण चाभेद्यं कल्पितं प्रेक्ष्य पाण्डवः। अभेद्यमिव सम्प्रेक्ष्य विषण्णोऽर्जुनमब्रवीत् ॥६-२१-२॥
vyūhaṃ bhīṣmeṇa cābhedyaṃ kalpitaṃ prekṣya pāṇḍavaḥ। abhedyamiva samprekṣya viṣaṇṇo'rjunamabravīt ॥6-21-2॥
[व्यूहम् (vyūham) - formation; भीष्मेण (bhīṣmeṇa) - by Bhishma; च (ca) - and; अभेद्यम् (abhedyam) - impenetrable; कल्पितम् (kalpitam) - arranged; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - seeing; पाण्डवः (pāṇḍavaḥ) - the Pandava; अभेद्यम् (abhedyam) - impenetrable; इव (iva) - as if; सम्प्रेक्ष्य (samprekṣya) - observing; विषण्णः (viṣaṇṇaḥ) - dejected; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - to Arjuna; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Seeing the formation arranged by Bhishma as impenetrable, the Pandava, observing it as impenetrable, said to Arjuna, dejected.)
Observing the formation arranged by Bhishma, which seemed impenetrable, the Pandava, feeling dejected, spoke to Arjuna.
धनञ्जय कथं शक्यमस्माभिर्योद्धुमाहवे। धार्तराष्ट्रैर्महाबाहो येषां योद्धा पितामहः ॥६-२१-३॥
dhanañjaya kathaṁ śakyamasmābhiryoddhumāhave। dhārtarāṣṭrairmahābāho yeṣāṁ yoddhā pitāmahaḥ ॥6-21-3॥
[धनञ्जय (dhanañjaya) - Arjuna; कथं (kathaṁ) - how; शक्यम् (śakyam) - possible; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; योद्धुम् (yoddhum) - to fight; आहवे (āhave) - in battle; धार्तराष्ट्रैः (dhārtarāṣṭraiḥ) - with the sons of Dhritarashtra; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed one; येषाम् (yeṣām) - whose; योद्धा (yoddhā) - warrior; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - grandfather;]
(Arjuna, how is it possible for us to fight in battle with the sons of Dhritarashtra, O mighty-armed one, whose warrior is the grandfather?)
Arjuna, how can we possibly fight against the sons of Dhritarashtra in battle, O mighty-armed one, when their warrior is the revered grandfather?
अक्षोभ्योऽयमभेद्यश्च भीष्मेणामित्रकर्शिना। कल्पितः शास्त्रदृष्टेन विधिना भूरितेजसा ॥६-२१-४॥
akṣobhyo'yamabhedyaśca bhīṣmeṇāmitrakarśinā। kalpitaḥ śāstradṛṣṭena vidhinā bhūritejasā ॥6-21-4॥
[अक्षोभ्यः (akṣobhyaḥ) - unshakeable; अयम् (ayam) - this; अभेद्यः (abhedyaḥ) - impenetrable; च (ca) - and; भीष्मेण (bhīṣmeṇa) - by Bhishma; अमित्रकर्शिना (amitrakarśinā) - by the enemy tormentor; कल्पितः (kalpitaḥ) - arranged; शास्त्रदृष्टेन (śāstradṛṣṭena) - by the scriptural view; विधिना (vidhinā) - by the method; भूरितेजसा (bhūritejasā) - by the one with great energy;]
(This unshakeable and impenetrable (formation) was arranged by Bhishma, the enemy tormentor, by the scriptural view and method, by the one with great energy.)
This formidable and unbreakable formation was strategically arranged by Bhishma, the tormentor of enemies, following the scriptural guidelines and methods, with his immense energy.
ते वयं संशयं प्राप्ताः ससैन्याः शत्रुकर्शन। कथमस्मान्महाव्यूहादुद्यानं नो भविष्यति ॥६-२१-५॥
te vayaṃ saṃśayaṃ prāptāḥ sasainyāḥ śatrukarśana। kathamasmānmahāvyūhādudyānaṃ no bhaviṣyati ॥6-21-5॥
[ते (te) - they; वयम् (vayam) - we; संशयम् (saṃśayam) - doubt; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - obtained; ससैन्याः (sasainyāḥ) - with army; शत्रुकर्शन (śatrukarśana) - O enemy tormentor; कथम् (katham) - how; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; महाव्यूहात् (mahāvyūhāt) - from great formation; उद्यानम् (udyānam) - exit; नः (naḥ) - our; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(They, we have obtained doubt, with army, O enemy tormentor. How will our exit from the great formation be?)
O tormentor of enemies, we along with our army have fallen into doubt. How will we find our way out of this great formation?
अथार्जुनोऽब्रवीत्पार्थं युधिष्ठिरममित्रहा। विषण्णमभिसम्प्रेक्ष्य तव राजन्ननीकिनीम् ॥६-२१-६॥
athārjuno'bravītpārthaṃ yudhiṣṭhiramamitrahā। viṣaṇṇamabhisamprekṣya tava rājannanīkinīm ॥6-21-6॥
[अथ (atha) - then; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; पार्थम् (pārtham) - to the son of Pritha; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira; अमित्रहा (amitrahā) - destroyer of enemies; विषण्णम् (viṣaṇṇam) - dejected; अभिसम्प्रेक्ष्य (abhisamprekṣya) - having seen; तव (tava) - your; राजन् (rājan) - O king; अनीकिनीम् (anīkinīm) - army;]
(Then Arjuna said to the son of Pritha, Yudhishthira, the destroyer of enemies, having seen your dejected army, O king.)
Then Arjuna, seeing your dejected army, spoke to Yudhishthira, the son of Pritha and destroyer of enemies, saying, "O king."
प्रज्ञयाभ्यधिकाञ्शूरान्गुणयुक्तान्बहूनपि। जयन्त्यल्पतरा येन तन्निबोध विशां पते ॥६-२१-७॥
prajñayābhyadhikāñ śūrān guṇayuktān bahūn api। jayanty alpataraḥ yena tan nibodha viśāṃ pate ॥6-21-7॥
[प्रज्ञया (prajñayā) - by wisdom; अभ्यधिकान् (abhyadhikān) - superior; शूरान् (śūrān) - heroes; गुणयुक्तान् (guṇayuktān) - endowed with qualities; बहून् (bahūn) - many; अपि (api) - even; जयन्ति (jayanti) - conquer; अल्पतरः (alpataraḥ) - lesser; येन (yena) - by whom; तत् (tat) - that; निबोध (nibodha) - understand; विशां (viśāṃ) - of the people; पते (pate) - O lord;]
(By wisdom, even a lesser person conquers many superior heroes endowed with qualities. Understand that, O lord of the people.)
O lord of the people, understand that even a person of lesser strength can conquer many superior heroes endowed with qualities through wisdom.
तत्तु ते कारणं राजन्प्रवक्ष्याम्यनसूयवे। नारदस्तमृषिर्वेद भीष्मद्रोणौ च पाण्डव ॥६-२१-८॥
tattu te kāraṇaṃ rājanpravakṣyāmyanasūyave। nāradastamṛṣirveda bhīṣmadroṇau ca pāṇḍava ॥6-21-8॥
[तत् (tat) - that; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - to you; कारणं (kāraṇam) - reason; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रवक्ष्यामि (pravakṣyāmi) - I shall explain; अनसूयवे (anasūyave) - to the non-envious; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; तम् (tam) - that; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; वेद (veda) - knows; भीष्मद्रोणौ (bhīṣmadroṇau) - Bhishma and Drona; च (ca) - and; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O son of Pandu;]
(But that reason I shall explain to you, O king, to the non-envious. Nārada, the sage, knows it, as do Bhishma and Drona, O son of Pandu.)
O King, I will explain to you the reason without envy. Sage Nārada knows it, as do Bhishma and Drona, O son of Pandu.
एतमेवार्थमाश्रित्य युद्धे देवासुरेऽब्रवीत्। पितामहः किल पुरा महेन्द्रादीन्दिवौकसः ॥६-२१-९॥
etamevārthamāśritya yuddhe devāsure'bravīt। pitāmahaḥ kila purā mahendrādīndivaukasaḥ ॥6-21-9॥
[एतम् (etam) - this; एव (eva) - only; अर्थम् (artham) - purpose; आश्रित्य (āśritya) - relying; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; देव-असुरे (deva-asure) - gods and demons; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - the grandsire; किल (kila) - indeed; पुरा (purā) - formerly; महेन्द्र-आदीन् (mahendra-ādīn) - Indra and others; दिवौकसः (divaukasaḥ) - the celestials;]
(Relying on this very purpose, the grandsire indeed said to Indra and other celestials in the battle between gods and demons.)
In the battle between gods and demons, the grandsire, relying on this very purpose, indeed spoke to Indra and the other celestials.
न तथा बलवीर्याभ्यां विजयन्ते जिगीषवः। यथा सत्यानृशंस्याभ्यां धर्मेणैवोद्यमेन च ॥६-२१-१०॥
na tathā balavīryābhyāṃ vijayante jigīṣavaḥ। yathā satyānṛśaṃsyābhyāṃ dharmeṇaivodyamena ca ॥6-21-10॥
[न (na) - not; तथा (tathā) - thus; बलवीर्याभ्यां (balavīryābhyāṃ) - by strength and heroism; विजयन्ते (vijayante) - conquer; जिगीषवः (jigīṣavaḥ) - those who desire to win; यथा (yathā) - as; सत्यानृशंस्याभ्यां (satyānṛśaṃsyābhyāṃ) - by truth and compassion; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by righteousness; एव (eva) - indeed; उद्यमेन (udyamena) - by effort; च (ca) - and;]
(Those who desire to win do not conquer by strength and heroism as they do by truth, compassion, righteousness, and effort.)
Victory is not achieved by those who wish to win through mere strength and heroism, but rather through truth, compassion, righteousness, and diligent effort.
त्यक्त्वाधर्मं च लोभं च मोहं चोद्यममास्थिताः। युध्यध्वमनहङ्कारा यतो धर्मस्ततो जयः ॥६-२१-११॥
tyaktvādharmam ca lobham ca moham caudyamamāsthitāḥ। yudhyadhvamanahaṅkārā yato dharmastato jayaḥ ॥6-21-11॥
[त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; अधर्मं (adharmam) - unrighteousness; च (ca) - and; लोभं (lobham) - greed; च (ca) - and; मोहं (moham) - delusion; च (ca) - and; उद्यमम् (udyamam) - effort; आस्थिताः (āsthitāḥ) - engaged in; युध्यध्वम् (yudhyadhvam) - fight; अनहङ्काराः (anahaṅkārāḥ) - without ego; यतः (yataḥ) - where; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; ततः (tataḥ) - there; जयः (jayaḥ) - victory;]
(Having abandoned unrighteousness, greed, and delusion, and engaged in effort, fight without ego. Where there is righteousness, there is victory.)
Abandon unrighteousness, greed, and delusion, and engage in effort. Fight without ego, for where there is righteousness, there is victory.
एवं राजन्विजानीहि ध्रुवोऽस्माकं रणे जयः। यथा मे नारदः प्राह यतः कृष्णस्ततो जयः ॥६-२१-१२॥
evaṃ rājan vijānīhi dhruvo'smākaṃ raṇe jayaḥ। yathā me nāradaḥ prāha yataḥ kṛṣṇas tato jayaḥ ॥6-21-12॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; राजन् (rājan) - O king; विजानीहि (vijānīhi) - know; ध्रुवः (dhruvaḥ) - certain; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - our; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; जयः (jayaḥ) - victory; यथा (yathā) - as; मे (me) - to me; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; प्राह (prāha) - said; यतः (yataḥ) - where; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Kṛṣṇa; ततः (tataḥ) - there; जयः (jayaḥ) - victory;]
(Thus, O king, know that our victory in battle is certain. As Nārada said to me, where Kṛṣṇa is, there is victory.)
Thus, O king, be assured of our victory in battle. As Nārada told me, wherever Kṛṣṇa is present, victory is assured.
गुणभूतो जयः कृष्णे पृष्ठतोऽन्वेति माधवम्। अन्यथा विजयश्चास्य संनतिश्चापरो गुणः ॥६-२१-१३॥
guṇabhūto jayaḥ kṛṣṇe pṛṣṭhato'nveti mādhavam। anyathā vijayaścāsya saṃnatiścāparo guṇaḥ ॥6-21-13॥
[गुणभूतः (guṇabhūtaḥ) - endowed with virtues; जयः (jayaḥ) - victory; कृष्णे (kṛṣṇe) - in Krishna; पृष्ठतः (pṛṣṭhataḥ) - behind; अन्वेति (anveti) - follows; माधवम् (mādhavam) - Madhava; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise; विजयः (vijayaḥ) - victory; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; संनतिः (saṃnatiḥ) - humility; च (ca) - and; अपरो (aparo) - another; गुणः (guṇaḥ) - virtue;]
(Endowed with virtues, victory follows Madhava behind Krishna; otherwise, victory and his humility are other virtues.)

अनन्ततेजा गोविन्दः शत्रुपूगेषु निर्व्यथः। पुरुषः सनातनतमो यतः कृष्णस्ततो जयः ॥६-२१-१४॥
anantatejā govindaḥ śatrupūgeṣu nirvyathaḥ। puruṣaḥ sanātanatamo yataḥ kṛṣṇastato jayaḥ ॥6-21-14॥
[अनन्ततेजा (anantatejā) - of infinite splendor; गोविन्दः (govindaḥ) - Govinda; शत्रुपूगेषु (śatrupūgeṣu) - among the multitude of enemies; निर्व्यथः (nirvyathaḥ) - without distress; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - the person; सनातनतमः (sanātanatamaḥ) - the most ancient; यतः (yataḥ) - from whom; कृष्णः (kṛṣṇaḥ) - Krishna; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; जयः (jayaḥ) - victory;]
(Of infinite splendor Govinda, among the multitude of enemies, without distress, the person, the most ancient, from whom Krishna, therefore victory.)
Govinda, of infinite splendor, remains undisturbed among the multitude of enemies. He is the most ancient person, from whom Krishna originates, and therefore, victory is assured.
पुरा ह्येष हरिर्भूत्वा वैकुण्ठोऽकुण्ठसायकः। सुरासुरानवस्फूर्जन्नब्रवीत्के जयन्त्विति ॥६-२१-१५॥
purā hyeṣa harirbhūtvā vaikuṇṭho'kuṇṭhasāyakaḥ। surāsurānavasphūrjannabravītke jayantviti ॥6-21-15॥
[पुरा (purā) - formerly; हि (hi) - indeed; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; वैकुण्ठः (vaikuṇṭhaḥ) - Vaikuntha; अकुण्ठ (akuṇṭha) - unimpeded; सायकः (sāyakaḥ) - arrow; सुर (sura) - gods; असुरान् (asurān) - demons; अवस्फूर्जन् (avasphūrjan) - shattering; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; के (ke) - who; जयन्ति (jayanti) - conquer; इति (iti) - thus;]
(Formerly, indeed, this Hari, having become Vaikuntha, with unimpeded arrow, shattering gods and demons, said, 'Who conquers thus?')
In ancient times, this Hari, transformed into Vaikuntha with an unerring arrow, shattered the gods and demons and asked, 'Who will conquer?'
अनु कृष्णं जयेमेति यैरुक्तं तत्र तैर्जितम्। तत्प्रसादाद्धि त्रैलोक्यं प्राप्तं शक्रादिभिः सुरैः ॥६-२१-१६॥
anu kṛṣṇaṃ jayemeti yairuktaṃ tatra tairjitam। tatprasādāddhi trailokyaṃ prāptaṃ śakrādibhiḥ suraiḥ ॥6-21-16॥
[अनु (anu) - after; कृष्णं (kṛṣṇam) - Krishna; जयेम (jayema) - we may conquer; इति (iti) - thus; यैः (yaiḥ) - by whom; उक्तं (uktam) - spoken; तत्र (tatra) - there; तैः (taiḥ) - by them; जितम् (jitam) - conquered; तत् (tat) - that; प्रसादात् (prasādāt) - by grace; हि (hi) - indeed; त्रैलोक्यं (trailokyam) - three worlds; प्राप्तं (prāptam) - obtained; शक्रादिभिः (śakrādibhiḥ) - by Indra and others; सुरैः (suraiḥ) - by gods;]
(After Krishna, we may conquer, thus spoken by whom, there by them conquered. By that grace indeed, the three worlds obtained by Indra and other gods.)
Following Krishna, those who declared 'we may conquer' were victorious there. Indeed, by that grace, the three worlds were obtained by Indra and the other gods.
तस्य ते न व्यथां काञ्चिदिह पश्यामि भारत। यस्य ते जयमाशास्ते विश्वभुक्त्रिदशेश्वरः ॥६-२१-१७॥
tasya te na vyathāṃ kāñcidiha paśyāmi bhārata। yasya te jayamāśāste viśvabhuktridaśeśvaraḥ ॥6-21-17॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; ते (te) - your; न (na) - not; व्यथां (vyathāṃ) - distress; काञ्चित् (kāñcit) - any; इह (iha) - here; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; यस्य (yasya) - whose; ते (te) - your; जयम् (jayam) - victory; आशास्ते (āśāste) - hopes for; विश्वभुक् (viśvabhuk) - the consumer of the universe; त्रिदशेश्वरः (tridaśeśvaraḥ) - the lord of the thirty gods;]
(I do not see any distress here for you, O Bhārata, whose victory is hoped for by the consumer of the universe, the lord of the thirty gods.)
O Bhārata, I see no cause for your distress here, as the lord of the thirty gods, who consumes the universe, hopes for your victory.
