Upon witnessing the formidable and prepared army of the Kauravas, King Yudhishthira, the son of Kunti, was overcome with despair.
Observing the formation arranged by Bhishma, which seemed impenetrable, the Pandava, feeling dejected, spoke to Arjuna.
Arjuna, how can we possibly fight against the sons of Dhritarashtra in battle, O mighty-armed one, when their warrior is the revered grandfather?
This formidable and unbreakable formation was strategically arranged by Bhishma, the tormentor of enemies, following the scriptural guidelines and methods, with his immense energy.
O tormentor of enemies, we along with our army have fallen into doubt. How will we find our way out of this great formation?
Then Arjuna, seeing your dejected army, spoke to Yudhishthira, the son of Pritha and destroyer of enemies, saying, "O king."
O lord of the people, understand that even a person of lesser strength can conquer many superior heroes endowed with qualities through wisdom.
O King, I will explain to you the reason without envy. Sage Nārada knows it, as do Bhishma and Drona, O son of Pandu.
In the battle between gods and demons, the grandsire, relying on this very purpose, indeed spoke to Indra and the other celestials.
Victory is not achieved by those who wish to win through mere strength and heroism, but rather through truth, compassion, righteousness, and diligent effort.
Abandon unrighteousness, greed, and delusion, and engage in effort. Fight without ego, for where there is righteousness, there is victory.
Thus, O king, be assured of our victory in battle. As Nārada told me, wherever Kṛṣṇa is present, victory is assured.
Victory, endowed with virtues, follows Madhava behind Krishna. Otherwise, victory and humility are his other virtues.
Govinda, of infinite splendor, remains undisturbed among the multitude of enemies. He is the most ancient person, from whom Krishna originates, and therefore, victory is assured.
In ancient times, this Hari, transformed into Vaikuntha with an unerring arrow, shattered the gods and demons and asked, 'Who will conquer?'
Following Krishna, those who declared 'we may conquer' were victorious there. Indeed, by that grace, the three worlds were obtained by Indra and the other gods.
O Bhārata, I see no cause for your distress here, as the lord of the thirty gods, who consumes the universe, hopes for your victory.
