He released arrows with feathered shafts, resembling venomous serpents, displaying his skill in weaponry with brightness, swiftness, and wonder.
तस्य विक्षिपतश्चापं शरानन्यांश्च मुञ्चतः। आददानस्य भूयश्च संदधानस्य चापरान् ॥६-७०-३॥

He was throwing his bow and releasing other arrows, while simultaneously taking and fixing more arrows.
क्षिपतश्च शरानस्य रणे शत्रून्विनिघ्नतः। ददृशे रूपमत्यर्थं मेघस्येव प्रवर्षतः ॥६-७०-४॥
kṣipataśca śarānasya raṇe śatrūnvinighnataḥ। dadṛśe rūpamatyarthaṃ meghasyeva pravarṣataḥ ॥6-70-4॥

तमुदीर्यन्तमालोक्य राजा दुर्योधनस्ततः। रथानामयुतं तस्य प्रेषयामास भारत ॥६-७०-५॥
tamudīryantamālokya rājā duryodhanastataḥ। rathānāmayutaṃ tasya preṣayāmāsa bhārata ॥6-70-5॥

तांस्तु सर्वान्महेष्वासान्सात्यकिः सत्यविक्रमः। जघान परमेष्वासो दिव्येनास्त्रेण वीर्यवान् ॥६-७०-६॥

स कृत्वा दारुणं कर्म प्रगृहीतशरासनः। आससाद ततो वीरो भूरिश्रवसमाहवे ॥६-७०-७॥

स हि संदृश्य सेनां तां युयुधानेन पातिताम्। अभ्यधावत सङ्क्रुद्धः कुरूणां कीर्तिवर्धनः ॥६-७०-८॥

(He, indeed, seeing that army fallen by Yuyudhana, rushed angrily, the fame-enhancer of the Kurus.)

इन्द्रायुधसवर्णं तत्स विस्फार्य महद्धनुः। व्यसृजद्वज्रसङ्काशाञ्शरानाशीविषोपमान् ॥ सहस्रशो महाराज दर्शयन्पाणिलाघवम् ॥६-७०-९॥

(Having stretched that great bow, having the color of Indra's bow, he released thunderbolt-like arrows, like serpents, by thousands, O great king, showing dexterity of hand.)
He stretched the great bow, which was as colorful as Indra's bow, and released thousands of arrows that resembled thunderbolts and serpents, demonstrating his dexterity to the great king.
शरांस्तान्मृत्युसंस्पर्शान्सात्यकेस्तु पदानुगाः। न विषेहुस्तदा राजन्दुद्रुवुस्ते समन्ततः ॥ विहाय समरे राजन्सात्यकिं युद्धदुर्मदम् ॥६-७०-१०॥
śarāṁstān mṛtyusaṁsparśān sātyakestu padānugāḥ। na viṣehus tadā rājan dudruvus te samantataḥ ॥ vihāya samare rājan sātyakiṁ yuddhadurmadam ॥6-70-10॥

(The followers of Satyaki, unable to bear those death-touching arrows, then fled in all directions, O king, leaving behind in the battle the fierce Satyaki.)

तं दृष्ट्वा युयुधानस्य सुता दश महाबलाः। महारथाः समाख्याताश्चित्रवर्मायुधध्वजाः ॥६-७०-११॥
taṁ dṛṣṭvā yuyudhānasya sutā daśa mahābalāḥ। mahārathāḥ samākhyātāś citravarmāyudhadhvajāḥ ॥6-70-11॥

(Having seen him, the ten greatly powerful sons of Yuyudhana, well-known as great chariot-warriors, Chitravarma and Ayudhadhvaja.)
Upon seeing him, the ten mighty sons of Yuyudhana, renowned as great chariot-warriors, including Chitravarma and Ayudhadhvaja, prepared for battle.
समासाद्य महेष्वासं भूरिश्रवसमाहवे। ऊचुः सर्वे सुसंरब्धा यूपकेतुं महारणे ॥६-७०-१२॥
samāsādya maheṣvāsaṃ bhūriśravasamāhave। ūcuḥ sarve susaṃrabdhā yūpaketuṃ mahāraṇe ॥6-70-12॥

(Having approached the great archer Bhūriśravas in battle, all, very enraged, said to Yūpaketu in the great war.)
All the warriors, filled with rage, approached the great archer Bhūriśravas in battle and spoke to Yūpaketu during the great war.
भो भो कौरवदायाद सहास्माभिर्महाबल। एहि युध्यस्व सङ्ग्रामे समस्तैः पृथगेव वा ॥६-७०-१३॥
bho bho kauravadāyāda sahāsmābhirmahābala। ehi yudhyasva saṅgrāme samastaiḥ pṛthageva vā ॥6-70-13॥

O mighty descendant of the Kauravas, come and fight with us in the battle, either all together or separately, as you wish.
अस्मान्वा त्वं पराजित्य यशः प्राप्नुहि संयुगे। वयं वा त्वां पराजित्य प्रीतिं दास्यामहे पितुः ॥६-७०-१४॥
asmānvā tvaṃ parājitya yaśaḥ prāpnuhi saṃyuge। vayaṃ vā tvāṃ parājitya prītiṃ dāsyāmahe pituḥ ॥6-70-14॥

(Either you conquer us and attain fame in battle, or we conquer you and will give joy to the father.)
Either you defeat us and gain fame in battle, or we defeat you and bring joy to our father.
एवमुक्तस्तदा शूरैस्तानुवाच महाबलः। वीर्यश्लाघी नरश्रेष्ठस्तान्दृष्ट्वा समुपस्थितान् ॥६-७०-१५॥
evamuktastadā śūraistānuvāca mahābalaḥ। vīryaślāghī naraśreṣṭhastāndṛṣṭvā samupasthitān ॥6-70-15॥

(Thus spoken then by the heroes, the mighty one said to them, boasting of valor, the best among men, having seen them assembled.)
Then, having been addressed by the heroes, the mighty one, who was proud of his valor, spoke to them as they stood assembled before him.
साध्विदं कथ्यते वीरा यदेवं मतिरद्य वः। युध्यध्वं सहिता यत्ता निहनिष्यामि वो रणे ॥६-७०-१६॥
sādhvidaṃ kathyate vīrā yadevaṃ matiradya vaḥ। yudhyadhvaṃ sahitā yattā nihaniṣyāmi vo raṇe ॥6-70-16॥
[साधु (sādhu) - good; इदं (idaṃ) - this; कथ्यते (kathyate) - is said; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; यत् (yat) - that; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; मतिः (matiḥ) - intention; अद्य (adya) - today; वः (vaḥ) - your; युध्यध्वम् (yudhyadhvam) - fight; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; यत्ताः (yattāḥ) - prepared; निहनिष्यामि (nihaniṣyāmi) - I will slay; वः (vaḥ) - you; रणे (raṇe) - in battle;]
(Good, this is said, heroes, that thus is your intention today. Fight together, prepared, I will slay you in battle.)
"Good heroes, it is said that your intention today is thus. Fight together with preparation, and I shall slay you in battle."
एवमुक्ता महेष्वासास्ते वीराः क्षिप्रकारिणः। महता शरवर्षेण अभ्यवर्षन्नरिंदमम् ॥६-७०-१७॥
evamuktā maheṣvāsāste vīrāḥ kṣiprakāriṇaḥ। mahatā śaravarṣeṇa abhyavarṣannarindamam ॥6-70-17॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्ता (uktā) - addressed; महेष्वासाः (maheṣvāsāḥ) - great archers; ते (te) - they; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; क्षिप्रकारिणः (kṣiprakāriṇaḥ) - quick-acting; महता (mahatā) - with great; शरवर्षेण (śaravarṣeṇa) - shower of arrows; अभ्यवर्षन् (abhyavarṣan) - showered; अरिंदमम् (arindamam) - the subduer of enemies;]
(Thus addressed, those great archers, the heroes, quick-acting, showered the subduer of enemies with a great shower of arrows.)
Upon being addressed in this manner, the mighty archers, known for their quick actions, launched a massive volley of arrows at the subduer of enemies.
अपराह्णे महाराज सङ्ग्रामस्तुमुलोऽभवत्। एकस्य च बहूनां च समेतानां रणाजिरे ॥६-७०-१८॥
aparaahne mahaaraaja sangraamastumulo'bhavat। ekasya ca bahuunaam ca sametaanaam ranaajire ॥6-70-18॥
[अपराह्णे (aparaahne) - in the afternoon; महाराज (mahaaraaja) - O great king; सङ्ग्रामः (sangraamah) - battle; तुमुलः (tumulah) - tumultuous; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; एकस्य (ekasya) - of one; च (ca) - and; बहूनाम् (bahuunaam) - of many; च (ca) - and; समेतानाम् (sametaanaam) - assembled; रणाजिरे (ranaajire) - on the battlefield;]
(In the afternoon, O great king, the battle became tumultuous, of one and of many assembled on the battlefield.)
In the afternoon, O great king, a tumultuous battle ensued, involving one and many assembled on the battlefield.
तमेकं रथिनां श्रेष्ठं शरवर्षैरवाकिरन्। प्रावृषीव महाशैलं सिषिचुर्जलदा नृप ॥६-७०-१९॥
tam ekaṁ rathināṁ śreṣṭhaṁ śaravarṣair avākiran। prāvṛṣīva mahāśailaṁ siṣi cur jaladā nṛpa ॥6-70-19॥
[तम् (tam) - that; एकम् (ekam) - one; रथिनाम् (rathinām) - of charioteers; श्रेष्ठम् (śreṣṭham) - best; शरवर्षैः (śaravarṣaiḥ) - with arrow-showers; अवाकिरन् (avākiran) - covered; प्रावृषा (prāvṛṣā) - like rainy season; इव (iva) - like; महाशैलम् (mahāśailam) - great mountain; सिषिचुः (siṣiṣuḥ) - drenched; जलदाः (jaladāḥ) - clouds; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(They covered that one, the best of charioteers, with showers of arrows, like clouds drench a great mountain in the rainy season, O king.)
The warriors showered arrows upon the best among the charioteers, covering him as clouds drench a great mountain during the monsoon, O king.
तैस्तु मुक्ताञ्शरौघांस्तान्यमदण्डाशनिप्रभान्। असम्प्राप्तानसम्प्राप्तांश्चिच्छेदाशु महारथः ॥६-७०-२०॥
taistu muktāñśaraughāṃstānyamadaṇḍāśaniprabhān। asamprāptānasamprāptāṃścicchedāśu mahārathaḥ ॥6-70-20॥
[तैः (taiḥ) - by them; तु (tu) - but; मुक्तान् (muktān) - released; शरौघान् (śaraughān) - arrows; तान् (tān) - those; यमदण्ड (yamadaṇḍa) - Yama's staff; अशनिप्रभान् (aśaniprabhān) - thunderbolt-like; असम्प्राप्तान् (asamprāptān) - not yet reached; असम्प्राप्तान् (asamprāptān) - not yet reached; चिच्छेद (ciccheda) - cut off; आशु (āśu) - quickly; महारथः (mahārathaḥ) - the great chariot-warrior;]
(But the great chariot-warrior quickly cut off those arrows released by them, which were like Yama's staff and thunderbolt, before they reached.)
The great chariot-warrior swiftly intercepted and cut down the arrows unleashed by them, which shone like the staff of Yama and thunderbolts, before they could reach their target.
तत्राद्भुतमपश्याम सौमदत्तेः पराक्रमम्। यदेको बहुभिर्युद्धे समसज्जदभीतवत् ॥६-७०-२१॥
tatrādbhutamapaśyāma saumadatteḥ parākramam। yadeko bahubhiryuddhe samasajjadabhītavat ॥6-70-21॥

(There we saw the wonderful valor of Saumadatta, who alone engaged fearlessly in battle with many.)
There we witnessed the remarkable bravery of Saumadatta, who stood fearlessly alone against many in battle.
विसृज्य शरवृष्टिं तां दश राजन्महारथाः। परिवार्य महाबाहुं निहन्तुमुपचक्रमुः ॥६-७०-२२॥
visṛjya śaravṛṣṭiṃ tāṃ daśa rājanmahārathāḥ। parivārya mahābāhuṃ nihantumupacakramuḥ ॥6-70-22॥
