tasminmahati saṅkrande rājā duryodhanastadā। gāṅgeyamupasaṅgamya vinayenābhivādya ca ॥6-91-1॥

तस्य सर्वं यथावृत्तमाख्यातुमुपचक्रमे। घटोत्कचस्य विजयमात्मनश्च पराजयम् ॥६-९१-२॥

कथयामास दुर्धर्षो विनिःश्वस्य पुनः पुनः। अब्रवीच्च तदा राजन्भीष्मं कुरुपितामहम् ॥६-९१-३॥
kathayāmāsa durdharṣo viniḥśvasya punaḥ punaḥ। abravīcca tadā rājanbhīṣmaṃ kurupitāmaham ॥6-91-3॥

भवन्तं समुपाश्रित्य वासुदेवं यथा परैः। पाण्डवैर्विग्रहो घोरः समारब्धो मया प्रभो ॥६-९१-४॥
bhavantaṃ samupāśritya vāsudevaṃ yathā paraiḥ। pāṇḍavairvigraho ghoraḥ samārabdho mayā prabho ॥6-91-4॥

O lord, having taken refuge in you, I initiated the terrible conflict with the Pandavas, just as with others.
एकादश समाख्याता अक्षौहिण्यश्च या मम। निदेशे तव तिष्ठन्ति मया सार्धं परन्तप ॥६-९१-५॥
ekādaśa samākhyātā akṣauhiṇyaśca yā mama। nideśe tava tiṣṭhanti mayā sārdhaṃ parantapa ॥6-91-5॥

सोऽहं भरतशार्दूल भीमसेनपुरोगमैः। घटोत्कचं समाश्रित्य पाण्डवैर्युधि निर्जितः ॥६-९१-६॥
so'haṁ bharataśārdūla bhīmasenapurogamaiḥ। ghaṭotkacaṁ samāśritya pāṇḍavairyudhi nirjitaḥ ॥6-91-6॥

तन्मे दहति गात्राणि शुष्कवृक्षमिवानलः। तदिच्छामि महाभाग त्वत्प्रसादात्परन्तप ॥६-९१-७॥

राक्षसापसदं हन्तुं स्वयमेव पितामह। त्वां समाश्रित्य दुर्धर्षं तन्मे कर्तुं त्वमर्हसि ॥६-९१-८॥
rākṣasāpasadaṃ hantuṃ svayameva pitāmaha। tvāṃ samāśritya durdharṣaṃ tanme kartuṃ tvamarhasi ॥6-91-8॥

एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु वचनं राज्ञो भरतसत्तम। दुर्योधनमिदं वाक्यं भीष्मः शान्तनवोऽब्रवीत् ॥६-९१-९॥
etacchrutvā tu vacanaṃ rājño bharatasattama। duryodhanamidaṃ vākyaṃ bhīṣmaḥ śāntanavo'bravīt ॥6-91-9॥

Upon hearing the king's words, Bhishma, the son of Shantanu, addressed Duryodhana, saying this.
शृणु राजन्मम वचो यत्त्वा वक्ष्यामि कौरव। यथा त्वया महाराज वर्तितव्यं परन्तप ॥६-९१-१०॥
śṛṇu rājanmama vaco yattvā vakṣyāmi kaurava। yathā tvayā mahārāja vartitavyaṃ parantapa ॥6-91-10॥

O King, listen to my words that I am going to tell you, O descendant of Kuru. You should conduct yourself in the manner I describe, O great king and scorcher of foes.
आत्मा रक्ष्यो रणे तात सर्वावस्थास्वरिंदम। धर्मराजेन सङ्ग्रामस्त्वया कार्यः सदानघ ॥६-९१-११॥
ātmā rakṣyo raṇe tāta sarvāvasthāsvariṃdama। dharmarājena saṅgrāmastvayā kāryaḥ sadānagha ॥6-91-11॥
[आत्मा (ātmā) - self; रक्ष्यः (rakṣyaḥ) - to be protected; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; तात (tāta) - dear; सर्वावस्थास्वरिंदम (sarvāvasthāsvariṃdama) - in all situations, O subduer of enemies; धर्मराजेन (dharmarājena) - by Dharmaraja; सङ्ग्रामः (saṅgrāmaḥ) - battle; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कार्यः (kāryaḥ) - should be done; सदानघ (sadānagha) - O sinless one;]
(The self should be protected in battle, dear, in all situations, O subduer of enemies. The battle by Dharmaraja should be done by you, O sinless one.)
Dear, you must protect yourself in battle under all circumstances, O subduer of enemies. You should engage in the battle led by Dharmaraja, O sinless one.
अर्जुनेन यमाभ्यां वा भीमसेनेन वा पुनः। राजधर्मं पुरस्कृत्य राजा राजानमृच्छति ॥६-९१-१२॥
arjunena yamābhyāṃ vā bhīmasenena vā punaḥ। rājadharmaṃ puraskṛtya rājā rājānamṛcchati ॥6-91-12॥

अहं द्रोणः कृपो द्रौणिः कृतवर्मा च सात्वतः। शल्यश्च सौमदत्तिश्च विकर्णश्च महारथः ॥६-९१-१३॥

(I, Droṇa, Kṛpa, son of Droṇa, Kṛtavarmā and Sātvata; Śalya and son of Somadatta; and Vikarṇa, the great chariot-warrior.)
I am Droṇa, Kṛpa, Aśvatthāmā (son of Droṇa), Kṛtavarmā, and Sātvata. Along with Śalya, Bhūriśravas (son of Somadatta), and Vikarṇa, we are all great chariot-warriors.
तव च भ्रातरः शूरा दुःशासनपुरोगमाः। त्वदर्थं प्रतियोत्स्यामो राक्षसं तं महाबलम् ॥६-९१-१४॥
tava ca bhrātaraḥ śūrā duḥśāsanapurogamāḥ। tvadarthaṃ pratiyotsyāmo rākṣasaṃ taṃ mahābalam ॥6-91-14॥
[तव (tava) - your; च (ca) - and; भ्रातरः (bhrātaraḥ) - brothers; शूरा (śūrā) - heroes; दुःशासनपुरोगमाः (duḥśāsanapurogamāḥ) - led by Duḥśāsana; त्वदर्थं (tvadarthaṃ) - for your sake; प्रतियोत्स्यामः (pratiyotsyāmaḥ) - we will fight; राक्षसं (rākṣasaṃ) - the demon; तम् (tam) - that; महाबलम् (mahābalam) - mighty;]
(Your brothers, the heroes led by Duḥśāsana, for your sake, we will fight that mighty demon.)
Your brothers, led by the valiant Duḥśāsana, are ready to fight the mighty demon for your cause.
तस्मिन्रौद्रे राक्षसेन्द्रे यदि ते हृच्छयो महान्। अयं वा गच्छतु रणे तस्य युद्धाय दुर्मतेः ॥ भगदत्तो महीपालः पुरंदरसमो युधि ॥६-९१-१५॥
tasminraudre rākṣasendre yadi te hṛcchayo mahān। ayaṃ vā gacchatu raṇe tasya yuddhāya durmateḥ ॥ bhagadatto mahīpālaḥ puraṃdarasamo yudhi ॥6-91-15॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; रौद्रे (raudre) - fierce; राक्षसेन्द्रे (rākṣasendre) - demon king; यदि (yadi) - if; ते (te) - your; हृच्छयः (hṛcchayaḥ) - heart's desire; महान् (mahān) - great; अयम् (ayam) - this; वा (vā) - or; गच्छतु (gacchatu) - let him go; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; तस्य (tasya) - his; युद्धाय (yuddhāya) - for battle; दुर्मतेः (durmateḥ) - of the evil-minded; भगदत्तः (bhagadattaḥ) - Bhagadatta; महीपालः (mahīpālaḥ) - king; पुरंदरसमः (puraṃdarasamaḥ) - equal to Indra; युधि (yudhi) - in battle;]
(In that fierce demon king, if your heart's desire is great, let this one go to battle for his fight with the evil-minded. Bhagadatta, the king, equal to Indra in battle.)
If your heart's desire is strong in that fierce demon king, let him go to battle against the evil-minded. Bhagadatta, the king, is as powerful as Indra in battle.
एतावदुक्त्वा राजानं भगदत्तमथाब्रवीत्। समक्षं पार्थिवेन्द्रस्य वाक्यं वाक्यविशारदः ॥६-९१-१६॥
etāvad uktvā rājānaṃ bhagadattam athābravīt। samakṣaṃ pārthivendrasya vākyaṃ vākyaviśāradaḥ ॥6-91-16॥
[एतावत् (etāvat) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; भगदत्तम् (bhagadattam) - Bhagadatta; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; समक्षम् (samakṣam) - in the presence of; पार्थिवेन्द्रस्य (pārthivendrasya) - of the lord of the earth; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; वाक्यविशारदः (vākyaviśāradaḥ) - the eloquent one;]
(Thus having spoken to King Bhagadatta, then said in the presence of the lord of the earth, the eloquent one.)
Having addressed King Bhagadatta in such words, the eloquent speaker then spoke in the presence of the lord of the earth.
गच्छ शीघ्रं महाराज हैडिम्बं युद्धदुर्मदम्। वारयस्व रणे यत्तो मिषतां सर्वधन्विनाम् ॥ राक्षसं क्रूरकर्माणं यथेन्द्रस्तारकं पुरा ॥६-९१-१७॥
gaccha śīghraṃ mahārāja haiḍimbaṃ yuddhadurmadam। vārayasva raṇe yatto miṣatāṃ sarvadhanvinām ॥ rākṣasaṃ krūrakarmāṇaṃ yathendrastārakaṃ purā ॥6-91-17॥
[गच्छ (gaccha) - go; शीघ्रम् (śīghram) - quickly; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; हैडिम्बम् (haiḍimbam) - Hidimba; युद्धदुर्मदम् (yuddhadurmadam) - arrogant in battle; वारयस्व (vārayasva) - restrain; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; यत्तः (yattaḥ) - prepared; मिषताम् (miṣatām) - of those watching; सर्वधन्विनाम् (sarvadhanvinām) - of all archers; राक्षसम् (rākṣasam) - demon; क्रूरकर्माणम् (krūrakarmāṇam) - cruel deeds; यथा (yathā) - as; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; तारकम् (tārakam) - Tāraka; पुरा (purā) - in ancient times;]
(Go quickly, O great king, to Hidimba, arrogant in battle. Restrain him in battle, prepared, of those watching, of all archers. The demon of cruel deeds, as Indra (did) to Tāraka in ancient times.)
O great king, quickly go to Hidimba, who is arrogant in battle, and restrain him in the battlefield, prepared in front of all the watching archers, just as Indra once subdued the demon Tāraka in ancient times.
तव दिव्यानि चास्त्राणि विक्रमश्च परन्तप। समागमश्च बहुभिः पुराभूदसुरैः सह ॥६-९१-१८॥
tava divyāni cāstrāṇi vikramaśca parantapa। samāgamaśca bahubhiḥ purābhūdasuraiḥ saha ॥6-91-18॥
[तव (tava) - your; दिव्यानि (divyāni) - divine; च (ca) - and; अस्त्राणि (astrāṇi) - weapons; विक्रमः (vikramaḥ) - prowess; च (ca) - and; परन्तप (parantapa) - O scorcher of foes; समागमः (samāgamaḥ) - encounter; च (ca) - and; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - with many; पुरा (purā) - formerly; अभूत् (abhūt) - was; असुरैः (asuraiḥ) - with demons; सह (saha) - together;]
(Your divine weapons and prowess, O scorcher of foes, and the encounter with many, was formerly with demons together.)
O scorcher of foes, your divine weapons and prowess were once used in encounters with many demons.
त्वं तस्य राजशार्दूल प्रतियोद्धा महाहवे। स्वबलेन वृतो राजञ्जहि राक्षसपुङ्गवम् ॥६-९१-१९॥
tvaṁ tasya rājaśārdūla pratiyoddhā mahāhave। svabalena vṛto rājañjahi rākṣasapuṅgavam ॥6-91-19॥
[त्वं (tvaṁ) - you; तस्य (tasya) - his; राजशार्दूल (rājaśārdūla) - O tiger among kings; प्रतियोद्धा (pratiyoddhā) - opponent; महाहवे (mahāhave) - in the great battle; स्वबलेन (svabalena) - with your own army; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - surrounded; राजन् (rājan) - O king; जहि (jahi) - slay; राक्षसपुङ्गवम् (rākṣasapuṅgavam) - the foremost among demons;]
(You, O tiger among kings, are his opponent in the great battle. Surrounded by your own army, O king, slay the foremost among demons.)
You, O noble king, stand as his opponent in this great battle. With your army surrounding you, defeat the leading demon.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा तु वचनं भीष्मस्य पृतनापतेः। प्रययौ सिंहनादेन परानभिमुखो द्रुतम् ॥६-९१-२०॥
etacchrutvā tu vacanaṃ bhīṣmasya pṛtanāpateḥ। prayayau siṃhanādena parānabhimukho drutam ॥6-91-20॥

(Having heard these words of Bhishma, the commander, he departed swiftly towards the enemies with a lion's roar.)

तमाद्रवन्तं सम्प्रेक्ष्य गर्जन्तमिव तोयदम्। अभ्यवर्तन्त सङ्क्रुद्धाः पाण्डवानां महारथाः ॥६-९१-२१॥
tamādravantaṃ samprekṣya garjantamiva toyadam। abhyavartanta saṅkruddhāḥ pāṇḍavānāṃ mahārathāḥ ॥6-91-21॥

भीमसेनोऽपि समरे तावुभौ केशवार्जुनौ। आश्रावयद्यथावृत्तमिरावद्वधमुत्तमम् ॥६-९१-८१॥
bhīmaseno'pi samare tāvubhau keśavārjunau। āśrāvayadyathāvṛttamirāvadvadhamuttamam ॥6-91-81॥
