Pancharatra and Core: Seeing Drona's sympathetic attitude towards Abhimanyu, Duryodhana asks Dushasana to kill him.
dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca॥
Dhritarashtra said:
dvaidhībhavati me cittaṃ hriyā tuṣṭyā ca sañjaya। mama putrasya yatsainyaṃ saubhadraḥ samavārayat ॥7-38-1॥
O Sanjaya, my mind is torn between modesty and satisfaction as Saubhadra has halted my son's forces.
vistareṇaiva me śaṁsa sarvaṁ gāvalgaṇe punaḥ। vikrīḍitaṁ kumārasya skandasyevāsuraiḥ saha ॥7-38-2॥
"O Gavalgaṇa, please narrate to me once more in detail the entire play of the young prince Skanda with the demons."
sañjaya uvāca॥
Sanjaya said:
hanta te sampravakṣyāmi vimardamatidāruṇam। ekasya ca bahūnāṃ ca yathāsīttumulo raṇaḥ ॥7-38-3॥
Behold, I will describe to you the very terrible and tumultuous battle that took place between one and many.
abhimanyuḥ kṛtotsāhaḥ kṛtotsāhānariṃdamān। rathastho rathinaḥ sarvāṃstāvakānapyaharṣayat ॥7-38-4॥
Abhimanyu, filled with enthusiasm, inspired joy among all your enthusiastic lords and charioteers while standing on the chariot.
droṇaṁ karṇaṁ kṛpaṁ śalyaṁ drauṇiṁ bhojaṁ bṛhadbalam। duryodhanaṁ saumadattiṁ śakuniṁ ca mahābalam ॥7-38-5॥
Drona, Karna, Kripa, Shalya, Drauni, Bhoja, Brihadbala, Duryodhana, Saumadatti, and Shakuni, all of whom are greatly powerful.
nānānṛpānnṛpasutānsainyāni vividhāni ca। alātacakravatsarvāṃścaranbāṇaiḥ samabhyayāt ॥7-38-6॥
He attacked various kings, princes, and diverse armies, moving like a wheel of fire with his arrows.
nighnannamitrānsaubhadraḥ paramāstraḥ pratāpavān। adarśayata tejasvī dikṣu sarvāsu bhārata ॥7-38-7॥
The son of Subhadra, with his supreme weapon, gloriously displayed his brilliance in all directions, O Bharata, slaying his enemies.
taddṛṣṭvā caritaṃ tasya saubhadra-syāmitaujasaḥ। samakampanta sainyāni tvadīyāni punaḥ punaḥ ॥7-38-8॥
Upon witnessing the mighty deeds of Saubhadra, your forces were repeatedly shaken.
athābravīn mahāprājño bhāradvājaḥ pratāpavān। harṣeṇotphullanayanaḥ kṛpamābhāṣya satvaram ॥7-38-9॥
Then, the wise and mighty Bharadvaja, his eyes bright with joy, quickly spoke to Kripa.
ghaṭṭayanniva marmāṇi tava putrasya māriṣa। abhimanyuṃ raṇe dṛṣṭvā tadā raṇaviśāradam ॥7-38-10॥
O sir, it was as if the vital parts of your son were being struck when Abhimanyu, the expert in battle, was seen in the battlefield.
eṣa gacchati saubhadraḥ pārthānām agrato yuvā। nandayan suhṛdaḥ sarvān rājānaṃ ca yudhiṣṭhiram ॥7-38-11॥
The young Abhimanyu, son of Subhadra, advances ahead of the Pandavas, bringing joy to all his friends and King Yudhishthira.
nakulaṁ sahadevaṁ ca bhīmasenaṁ ca pāṇḍavam। bandhūnsambandhinaścānyānmadhyasthānsuhṛdastathā ॥7-38-12॥
Nakul, Sahadev, Bhimasena, and the Pandavas, along with their relatives, kinsmen, others, neutrals, and friends.
nāsya yuddhe samaṃ manye kañcidanyaṃ dhanurdharam। icchanhanyādimāṃ senāṃ kimarthamapi necchati ॥7-38-13॥
I believe there is no other archer like him in battle; he could destroy this army if he wanted, but for some reason, he chooses not to.
droṇasya prītisaṃyuktaṃ śrutvā vākyaṃ tavātmajaḥ। ārjuniṃ prati saṅkruddho droṇaṃ dṛṣṭvā smayanniva ॥7-38-14॥
Upon hearing Drona's affectionate words, your son, filled with anger towards Arjuna, glanced at Drona with a semblance of a smile.
atha duryodhanaḥ karṇamabravīdbāhlikaṃ kṛpam। duḥsāsanaṃ madrarājaṃ tāṃstāṃścānyānmahārathān ॥7-38-15॥
Then Duryodhana addressed Karna, Bahlika, Kripa, Duhsasana, the King of Madra, and other great warriors.
sarvamūrdhāvasiktānāmācāryo brahmavittamaḥ। arjunasya sutaṃ mūḍhaṃ nābhihantumihecchati ॥7-38-16॥
The revered teacher, known for his profound knowledge of Brahman, chooses not to harm Arjuna's misguided son, who stands anointed among the leaders.
na hy asya samare mucyed antako'py ātatāyinaḥ। kim aṅga punar evānyo martyaḥ satyaṃ bravīmi vaḥ ॥7-38-17॥
Even Death would not spare him in battle, let alone another mortal; I assure you, this is the truth.
arjunasya sutaṁ tveṣa śiṣyatvādabhirakṣati। putrāḥ śiṣyāśca dayitāstadapatyaṁ ca dharmiṇām ॥7-38-18॥
Indeed, this one protects Arjuna's son because he is a disciple. Sons, disciples, and beloved ones are the offspring of the righteous.
saṁrakṣyamāṇo droṇena manyate vīryamātmanaḥ। ātmasambhāvito mūḍhastam pramathnīta māciram ॥7-38-19॥
Protected by Drona, he believes in his own strength. Being self-conceited and foolish, he should be crushed without delay.
evamuktāstu te rājñā sātvatīputramabhyayuḥ। saṁrabdhāstaṁ jighāṁsanto bhāradvājasya paśyataḥ ॥7-38-20॥
Upon being addressed by the king, they angrily approached Satyavati's son with the intent to kill him, all under the watchful eyes of Bharadvaja.
duḥśāsanastu tacchrutvā duryodhanavacastadā। abravītkuruśārdūlo duryodhanamidaṃ vacaḥ ॥7-38-21॥
Duhshasana, upon hearing Duryodhana's words, addressed him as the tiger among the Kurus, and spoke these words.
aham enaṃ haniṣyāmi mahārāja bravīmi te। miṣatāṃ pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ pāñcālānāṃ ca paśyatām ॥ grasiṣyāmy adya saubhadraṃ yathā rāhur divākaram ॥7-38-22॥
I declare to you, O great king, that I will slay this one. In the presence of the sons of Pandu and the Panchalas, while they watch, I will devour Saubhadra today just as Rahu devours the sun.
utkruśya cābravīdvākyaṃ kururājamidaṃ punaḥ। śrutvā kṛṣṇau mayā grastaṃ saubhadramatimāninau ॥ gamiṣyataḥ pretalokaṃ jīvalokānna saṃśayaḥ ॥7-38-23॥
Having seized, he again addressed the Kuru king, saying: 'Upon hearing, I have captured the two Krishnas and the arrogant Abhimanyu. They will undoubtedly depart from the world of the living to the realm of the dead.'
tau ca śrutvā mṛtau vyaktaṃ pāṇḍoḥ kṣetrodhbhavāḥ sutāḥ। ekāhnā sasuhṛdvargāḥ klaibyāddhāsyanti jīvitam ॥7-38-24॥
Upon hearing the news of the death of Pandu's sons, who were born in the field, they, along with their friends and relatives, will abandon life out of weakness in just one day.
tasmādasminhate śatrau hatāḥ sarve'hitāstava। śivena dhyāhi mā rājanneṣa hanmi ripuṃ tava ॥7-38-25॥
Therefore, since this enemy is killed, all your hostile ones are defeated. Meditate on Shiva, O king, I shall destroy your enemy.
evamuktvā nadanrājanputro duḥśāsanastava। saubhadramabhyayātkruddhaḥ śaravarṣairavākiran ॥7-38-26॥
After speaking thus, your son Duḥśāsana, roaring in anger, attacked Abhimanyu and covered him with a shower of arrows, O king.
tam abhikruddham āyāntaṃ tava putram ariṃdamaḥ। abhimanyuḥ śarais tīkṣṇaiḥ ṣaḍviṃśatyā samarpayat ॥7-38-27॥
Abhimanyu, with his sharp arrows, attacked your enraged son who was coming towards him, O conqueror of enemies.
duḥśāsanastu saṅkruddhaḥ prabhinna iva kuñjaraḥ। ayodhayata saubhadramabhimanyuśca taṃ raṇe ॥7-38-28॥
Duhshasana, in his fury, charged like a wounded elephant and engaged in battle with Abhimanyu, the son of Subhadra.
tau maṇḍalāni citrāṇi rathābhyāṃ savyadakṣiṇam। caramāṇāvayudhyetāṃ rathaśikṣāviśāradau ॥7-38-29॥
They both maneuvered their chariots skillfully in intricate patterns, engaging in a masterful display of chariot warfare.
atha paṇavamṛdaṅgadundubhīnāṃ; kṛkaramahānakabherijharjharāṇām। ninadamatibhṛśaṃ narāḥ pracakru; lavaṇajalodbhavasimhanādamishram ॥7-38-30॥
Then the men created a very loud noise with various drums, blending it with the roaring sound of the ocean.
