 Pancharatra and Core: Yudhishthira's lamentation and guard of honour to Abhimanyu.

तस्मिंस्तु निहते वीरे सौभद्रे रथयूथपे। विमुक्तरथसंनाहाः सर्वे निक्षिप्तकार्मुकाः ॥७-४९-१॥
tasmiṁstu nihate vīre saubhadre rathayūthape। vimuktarathasaṁnāhāḥ sarve nikṣiptakārmukāḥ ॥7-49-1॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; तु (tu) - but; निहते (nihate) - slain; वीरे (vīre) - hero; सौभद्रे (saubhadre) - son of Subhadra; रथयूथपे (rathayūthape) - charioteer; विमुक्तरथसंनाहाः (vimuktarathasaṁnāhāḥ) - having abandoned their chariots; सर्वे (sarve) - all; निक्षिप्तकार्मुकाः (nikṣiptakārmukāḥ) - having laid down their bows;]
(In that, but the slain hero, the son of Subhadra, the charioteer, having abandoned their chariots, all having laid down their bows.)

उपोपविष्टा राजानं परिवार्य युधिष्ठिरम्। तदेव दुःखं ध्यायन्तः सौभद्रगतमानसाः ॥७-४९-२॥

(Sitting around the king, surrounding Yudhishthira, meditating on that very sorrow, their minds were on Abhimanyu who was gone.)
The group sat around King Yudhishthira, enveloping him, their thoughts consumed by the sorrow of Abhimanyu's demise.
ततो युधिष्ठिरो राजा विललाप सुदुःखितः। अभिमन्यौ हते वीरे भ्रातुः पुत्रे महारथे ॥७-४९-३॥

द्रोणानीकमसम्बाधं मम प्रियचिकीर्षया। भित्त्वा व्यूहं प्रविष्टोऽसौ गोमध्यमिव केसरी ॥७-४९-४॥

(With the desire to please me, he entered the unobstructed army formation of Drona, like a lion entering the midst of cows.)

यस्य शूरा महेष्वासाः प्रत्यनीकगता रणे। प्रभग्ना विनिवर्तन्ते कृतास्त्रा युद्धदुर्मदाः ॥७-४९-५॥
yasya śūrā maheṣvāsāḥ pratyanīkagatā raṇe। prabhagnā vinivartante kṛtāstrā yuddhadurmadāḥ ॥7-49-5॥

The heroes, who are great archers, when they go to the enemy's side in battle, return defeated, having exhausted their weapons, and are arrogant in battle.
अत्यन्तशत्रुरस्माकं येन दुःशासनः शरैः। क्षिप्रं ह्यभिमुखः सङ्क्ये विसञ्ज्ञो विमुखीकृतः ॥७-४९-६॥
atyantaśatrurasmākaṃ yena duḥśāsanaḥ śaraiḥ। kṣipraṃ hyabhimukhaḥ saṅkye visañjño vimukhīkṛtaḥ ॥7-49-6॥

(Our great enemy, Duḥśāsana, by whom, with arrows, was quickly indeed facing in battle, made unconscious and turned away.)

स तीर्त्वा दुस्तरं वीरो द्रोणानीकमहार्णवम्। प्राप्य दौःशासनिं कार्ष्णिर्यातो वैवस्वतक्षयम् ॥७-४९-७॥

(He, having crossed the difficult-to-cross ocean of Drona's army, the hero, having reached Duhshasana, Kṛṣṇa's son went to the abode of Yama.)
The hero, having bravely crossed the formidable ocean of Drona's army, reached Duhshasana and then Kṛṣṇa's son departed to the realm of Yama.
कथं द्रक्ष्यामि कौन्तेयं सौभद्रे निहतेऽर्जुनम्। सुभद्रां वा महाभागां प्रियं पुत्रमपश्यतीम् ॥७-४९-८॥
kathaṁ drakṣyāmi kaunteyaṁ saubhadre nihate'rjunam। subhadrāṁ vā mahābhāgāṁ priyaṁ putramapaśyatīm ॥7-49-8॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; द्रक्ष्यामि (drakṣyāmi) - shall I see; कौन्तेयं (kaunteyaṁ) - son of Kunti; सौभद्रे (saubhadre) - son of Subhadra; निहते (nihate) - slain; अर्जुनम् (arjunam) - Arjuna; सुभद्रां (subhadrāṁ) - Subhadra; वा (vā) - or; महाभागां (mahābhāgāṁ) - fortunate; प्रियं (priyaṁ) - dear; पुत्रम् (putram) - son; अपश्यतीम् (apaśyatīm) - not seeing;]
(How shall I see the son of Kunti, Arjuna, slain by the son of Subhadra? Or Subhadra, the fortunate, not seeing her dear son?)
How will I face Arjuna, the son of Kunti, after the son of Subhadra has been slain? Or how will Subhadra, the fortunate lady, bear the sight of not seeing her beloved son?
किं स्विद्वयमपेतार्थमश्लिष्टमसमञ्जसम्। तावुभौ प्रतिवक्ष्यामो हृषीकेशधनञ्जयौ ॥७-४९-९॥
kiṁ svid vayam apetārtham aśliṣṭam asamañjasam। tāv ubhau prativakṣyāmo hṛṣīkeśadhanañjayau ॥7-49-9॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; स्वित् (svid) - indeed; वयम् (vayam) - we; अपेतार्थम् (apetārtham) - meaningless; अश्लिष्टम् (aśliṣṭam) - incoherent; असमञ्जसम् (asamañjasam) - inappropriate; तौ (tau) - those two; उभौ (ubhau) - both; प्रतिवक्ष्यामः (prativakṣyāmaḥ) - we shall reply; हृषीकेशधनञ्जयौ (hṛṣīkeśadhanañjayau) - Hṛṣīkeśa and Dhanañjaya;]
(What indeed we meaningless incoherent inappropriate those two both we shall reply Hṛṣīkeśa and Dhanañjaya.)
"What indeed shall we, who are meaningless, incoherent, and inappropriate, reply to those two, Hṛṣīkeśa and Dhanañjaya?"
अहमेव सुभद्रायाः केशवार्जुनयोरपि। प्रियकामो जयाकाङ्क्षी कृतवानिदमप्रियम् ॥७-४९-१०॥
ahameva subhadrāyāḥ keśavārjunayorapi। priyakāmo jayākāṅkṣī kṛtavānidamapriyam ॥7-49-10॥
[अहम् (aham) - I; एव (eva) - only; सुभद्रायाः (subhadrāyāḥ) - of Subhadra; केशव-अर्जुनयोः (keśava-arjunayoḥ) - of Keshava and Arjuna; अपि (api) - also; प्रिय-कामः (priya-kāmaḥ) - desiring the beloved; जय-आकाङ्क्षी (jaya-ākāṅkṣī) - desiring victory; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - did; इदम् (idam) - this; अप्रियम् (apriyam) - unpleasant;]
(I, desiring the beloved and victory, did this unpleasant act for Subhadra, Keshava, and Arjuna.)
I acted unpleasantly towards Subhadra, Keshava, and Arjuna, driven by my desire for affection and victory.
न लुब्धो बुध्यते दोषान्मोहाल्लोभः प्रवर्तते। मधु लिप्सुर्हि नापश्यं प्रपातमिदमीदृशम् ॥७-४९-११॥
na lubdho budhyate doṣān mohāl lobhaḥ pravartate। madhu lipsur hi nāpaśyaṃ prapātam idam īdṛśam ॥7-49-11॥
[न (na) - not; लुब्धः (lubdhaḥ) - greedy person; बुध्यते (budhyate) - understands; दोषान् (doṣān) - faults; मोहात् (mohāt) - due to delusion; लोभः (lobhaḥ) - greed; प्रवर्तते (pravartate) - arises; मधु (madhu) - honey; लिप्सुः (lipsuḥ) - desiring; हि (hi) - indeed; न (na) - not; अपश्यं (apaśyaṃ) - seeing; प्रपातम् (prapātam) - precipice; इदम् (idam) - this; ईदृशम् (īdṛśam) - such;]
(The greedy person does not understand faults; greed arises due to delusion. Indeed, desiring honey, he does not see this precipice as such.)
A greedy person, blinded by delusion, fails to recognize faults. In his desire for honey, he does not see the precipice before him.
यो हि भोज्ये पुरस्कार्यो यानेषु शयनेषु च। भूषणेषु च सोऽस्माभिर्बालो युधि पुरस्कृतः ॥७-४९-१२॥
yo hi bhojye puraskāryo yāneṣu śayaneṣu ca। bhūṣaṇeṣu ca so'smābhirbālo yudhi puraskṛtaḥ ॥7-49-12॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; भोज्ये (bhojye) - in food; पुरस्कार्यः (puraskāryaḥ) - to be honored; यानेषु (yāneṣu) - in vehicles; शयनेषु (śayaneṣu) - in beds; च (ca) - and; भूषणेषु (bhūṣaṇeṣu) - in ornaments; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he; अस्माभिः (asmābhiḥ) - by us; बालः (bālaḥ) - boy; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; पुरस्कृतः (puraskṛtaḥ) - placed in front;]
(Who indeed is to be honored in food, in vehicles, in beds, and in ornaments, he is placed in front by us, the boy, in battle.)

कथं हि बालस्तरुणो युद्धानामविशारदः। सदश्व इव सम्बाधे विषमे क्षेममर्हति ॥७-४९-१३॥
kathaṁ hi bālastaruṇo yuddhānāmaviśāradaḥ। sadaśva iva sambādhe viṣame kṣemamarhati ॥7-49-13॥
[कथम् (katham) - how; हि (hi) - indeed; बालः (bālaḥ) - a boy; तरुणः (taruṇaḥ) - young; युद्धानाम् (yuddhānām) - of battles; अविशारदः (aviśāradaḥ) - unskilled; सदश्वः (sadaśvaḥ) - a good horse; इव (iva) - like; सम्बाधे (sambādhe) - in a crowd; विषमे (viṣame) - in difficulty; क्षेमम् (kṣemam) - safety; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves;]
(How indeed does a young boy, unskilled in battles, deserve safety in difficulty like a good horse in a crowd?)
How can a young and inexperienced boy, like a good horse caught in a crowd, expect to find safety in the midst of battle?
नो चेद्धि वयमप्येनं महीमनुशयीमहि। बीभत्सोः कोपदीप्तस्य दग्धाः कृपणचक्षुषा ॥७-४९-१४॥
no ceddhi vayamapyenaṃ mahīmanuśayīmahi। bībhatsoḥ kopadīptasya dagdhāḥ kṛpaṇacakṣuṣā ॥7-49-14॥

अलुब्धो मतिमान्ह्रीमान्क्षमावान्रूपवान्बली। वपुष्मान्मानकृद्वीरः प्रियः सत्यपरायणः ॥७-४९-१५॥

(The lord who gives fearlessness to others and to those seeking refuge, today his son is not able to be protected by us from fear.)

(Fear, indeed, has greatly arisen for Dhritarashtra's great strength. Arjuna, angry due to the killing of his son, will destroy the Kauravas.)
A great fear has arisen for Dhritarashtra's mighty forces. Arjuna, enraged by the death of his son, is determined to annihilate the Kauravas.
क्षुद्रः क्षुद्रसहायश्च स्वपक्षक्षयमातुरः। व्यक्तं दुर्योधनो दृष्ट्वा शोचन्हास्यति जीवितम् ॥७-४९-२०॥
kṣudraḥ kṣudrasahāyaśca svapakṣakṣayamāturaḥ। vyaktaṃ duryodhano dṛṣṭvā śocanhāsyati jīvitam ॥7-49-20॥
