Pancharatra and Core: Arjuna spoke to all his brothers, his voice choked with emotion.

तस्मिन्नहनि निर्वृत्ते घोरे प्राणभृतां क्षये। आदित्येऽस्तङ्गते श्रीमान्सन्ध्याकाल उपस्थिते ॥७-५०-१॥
tasminnahani nirvṛtte ghore prāṇabhṛtāṃ kṣaye। āditye'staṅgate śrīmānsandhyākāla upasthite ॥7-50-1॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; अहनि (ahani) - day; निर्वृत्ते (nirvṛtte) - completed; घोरे (ghore) - terrible; प्राणभृताम् (prāṇabhṛtām) - of living beings; क्षये (kṣaye) - destruction; आदित्ये (āditye) - sun; अस्तङ्गते (astaṅgate) - set; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - the glorious; सन्ध्याकाल (sandhyākāla) - evening time; उपस्थिते (upasthite) - arrived;]
(In that day, when the terrible destruction of living beings was completed, the sun had set, and the glorious evening time had arrived.)
On that day, after the dreadful destruction of living beings was over, as the sun had set, the auspicious evening time approached.
व्यपयातेषु सैन्येषु वासाय भरतर्षभ। हत्वा संशप्तकव्रातान्दिव्यैरस्त्रैः कपिध्वजः ॥७-५०-२॥
vyapayāteṣu sainyeṣu vāsāya bharatarṣabha। hatvā saṃśaptakavratāndivyairastraiḥ kapidhvajaḥ ॥7-50-2॥

(Having departed the armies, O best of the Bharatas, the one with the monkey banner, having slain the group of warriors sworn to die with divine weapons, to rest.)

प्रायात्स्वशिबिरं जिष्णुर्जैत्रमास्थाय तं रथम्। गच्छन्नेव च गोविन्दं सन्नकण्ठोऽभ्यभाषत ॥७-५०-३॥

(Arjuna departed to his own camp, having mounted that victorious chariot, and while going, he spoke to Krishna with a choked throat.)
Arjuna, having mounted his victorious chariot, departed to his camp and, while on the way, spoke to Krishna with a voice choked with emotion.
किं नु मे हृदयं त्रस्तं वाक्यं सज्जति केशव। स्पन्दन्ति चाप्यनिष्टानि गात्रं सीदति चाच्युत ॥७-५०-४॥
kiṁ nu me hṛdayaṁ trastaṁ vākyaṁ sajjati keśava। spandanti cāpyaniṣṭāni gātraṁ sīdati cācyuta ॥7-50-4॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; मे (me) - my; हृदयं (hṛdayaṁ) - heart; त्रस्तं (trastaṁ) - trembling; वाक्यं (vākyaṁ) - speech; सज्जति (sajjati) - adheres; केशव (keśava) - Keshava; स्पन्दन्ति (spandanti) - tremble; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अनिष्टानि (aniṣṭāni) - inauspicious; गात्रं (gātraṁ) - body; सीदति (sīdati) - sinks; च (ca) - and; अच्युत (acyuta) - Acyuta;]
(What indeed is my heart trembling, the speech adheres, O Keshava. The inauspicious also tremble, the body sinks, O Acyuta.)
Why is my heart trembling, and my speech faltering, O Keshava? Even the inauspicious omens are trembling, and my body is sinking, O Acyuta.
अनिष्टं चैव मे श्लिष्टं हृदयान्नापसर्पति। भुवि यद्दिक्षु चाप्युग्रा उत्पातास्त्रासयन्ति माम् ॥७-५०-५॥
aniṣṭaṃ caiva me śliṣṭaṃ hṛdayānnāpasarpati। bhuvi yaddikṣu cāpyugrā utpātāstrāsayanti mām ॥7-50-5॥
[अनिष्टम् (aniṣṭam) - inauspicious; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; मे (me) - my; श्लिष्टम् (śliṣṭam) - clinging; हृदयात् (hṛdayāt) - from the heart; न (na) - not; अपसर्पति (apasarpati) - departs; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth; यत् (yat) - which; दिक्षु (dikṣu) - in directions; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; उग्राः (ugrāḥ) - terrible; उत्पाताः (utpātāḥ) - omens; त्रासयन्ति (trāsayanti) - frighten; माम् (mām) - me;]
(The inauspicious indeed clinging to my heart does not depart. On earth, the terrible omens in the directions also frighten me.)
The inauspiciousness clings to my heart and does not leave. The terrible omens appearing in all directions on earth also frighten me.
बहुप्रकारा दृश्यन्ते सर्व एवाघशंसिनः। अपि स्वस्ति भवेद्राज्ञः सामात्यस्य गुरोर्मम ॥७-५०-६॥
bahuprakārā dṛśyante sarva evāghaśaṁsinaḥ। api svasti bhavedrājñaḥ sāmātyasya gurormama ॥7-50-6॥
[बहु (bahu) - many; प्रकारा (prakārā) - types; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - are seen; सर्वे (sarve) - all; एव (eva) - indeed; अघशंसिनः (aghaśaṁsinaḥ) - evil-doers; अपि (api) - also; स्वस्ति (svasti) - well-being; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; सामात्यस्य (sāmātyasya) - with ministers; गुरोः (guroḥ) - of the teacher; मम (mama) - my;]
(Many types of evil-doers are indeed seen. May there also be well-being for the king, with ministers, and my teacher.)
Various kinds of evil-doers are observed everywhere. May the king, along with his ministers and my teacher, also be well.

व्यक्तं शिवं तव भ्रातुः सामात्यस्य भविष्यति। मा शुचः किञ्चिदेवान्यत्तत्रानिष्टं भविष्यति ॥७-५०-७॥
vyaktaṁ śivaṁ tava bhrātuḥ sāmātyasya bhaviṣyati। mā śucaḥ kiñcidevānyattatrāniṣṭaṁ bhaviṣyati ॥7-50-7॥
[व्यक्तं (vyaktam) - manifest; शिवं (śivam) - auspicious; तव (tava) - your; भ्रातुः (bhrātuḥ) - brother's; सामात्यस्य (sāmātyasya) - with ministers; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; मा (mā) - do not; शुचः (śucaḥ) - grieve; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; एव (eva) - indeed; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; तत्र (tatra) - there; अनिष्टं (aniṣṭam) - inauspicious; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Manifest auspiciousness will be for your brother with ministers. Do not grieve; indeed, nothing else inauspicious will be there.)
It is clear that auspiciousness will come to your brother and his ministers. Do not worry; nothing else inauspicious will occur there.

ततः सन्ध्यामुपास्यैव वीरौ वीरावसादने। कथयन्तौ रणे वृत्तं प्रयातौ रथमास्थितौ ॥७-५०-८॥
tataḥ sandhyām upāsyaiva vīrau vīrāvasādane। kathayantau raṇe vṛttaṃ prayātau ratham āsthitau ॥7-50-8॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; सन्ध्याम् (sandhyām) - twilight; उपास्य (upāsya) - having worshipped; एव (eva) - indeed; वीरौ (vīrau) - the two heroes; वीरावसादने (vīrāvasādane) - in the destruction of heroes; कथयन्तौ (kathayantau) - speaking; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; वृत्तम् (vṛttam) - events; प्रयातौ (prayātau) - departed; रथम् (ratham) - chariot; आस्थितौ (āsthitau) - mounted;]
(Then, having worshipped the twilight, the two heroes, indeed in the destruction of heroes, speaking of the events in battle, departed mounted on the chariot.)
After worshipping at twilight, the two valiant heroes, discussing the events of the battle, departed on their chariot, ready for the destruction of their enemies.
ततः स्वशिबिरं प्राप्तौ हतानन्दं हतत्विषम्। वासुदेवोऽर्जुनश्चैव कृत्वा कर्म सुदुष्करम् ॥७-५०-९॥
tataḥ svaśibiraṃ prāptau hatānandaṃ hatatviṣam। vāsudevo'rjunaścaiva kṛtvā karma suduṣkaram ॥7-50-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स्वशिबिरं (svaśibiraṃ) - to own camp; प्राप्तौ (prāptau) - arrived; हतानन्दं (hatānandaṃ) - devoid of joy; हतत्विषम् (hatatviṣam) - devoid of splendor; वासुदेवः (vāsudevaḥ) - Vasudeva; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having performed; कर्म (karma) - deed; सुदुष्करम् (suduṣkaram) - very difficult;]
(Then, having performed a very difficult deed, Vasudeva and Arjuna arrived at their own camp, devoid of joy and splendor.)
After accomplishing the arduous task, Vasudeva and Arjuna returned to their camp, feeling joyless and lacking in splendor.
ध्वस्ताकारं समालक्ष्य शिबिरं परवीरहा। बीभत्सुरब्रवीत्कृष्णमस्वस्थहृदयस्ततः ॥७-५०-१०॥
dhvastākāraṃ samālakṣya śibiraṃ paravīrahā। bībhatsurabravītkṛṣṇamasvasthahṛdayastataḥ ॥7-50-10॥
[ध्वस्त (dhvasta) - destroyed; आकारं (ākāraṃ) - form; समालक्ष्य (samālakṣya) - having observed; शिबिरं (śibiraṃ) - camp; पर (para) - enemy; वीरहा (vīrahā) - hero-slayer; बीभत्सुः (bībhatsuḥ) - Bibhatsu; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; कृष्णम् (kṛṣṇam) - to Krishna; अस्वस्थ (asvastha) - disturbed; हृदयः (hṛdayaḥ) - heart; ततः (tataḥ) - then;]
(Having observed the destroyed form of the camp, the enemy hero-slayer Bibhatsu, with a disturbed heart, then said to Krishna.)
Upon seeing the devastated state of the enemy camp, Bibhatsu, the slayer of heroes, spoke to Krishna with a troubled heart.
नाद्य नन्दन्ति तूर्याणि मङ्गल्यानि जनार्दन। मिश्रा दुन्दुभिनिर्घोषैः शङ्खाश्चाडम्बरैः सह ॥ वीणा वा नाद्य वाद्यन्ते शम्यातालस्वनैः सह ॥७-५०-११॥
nādy naṃdanti tūryāṇi maṅgalyāṇi janārdana। miśrā dundubhinirghoṣaiḥ śaṅkhāścāḍambaraiḥ saha ॥ vīṇā vā nādya vādyante śamyātālasvanaiḥ saha ॥7-50-11॥
[न (na) - not; अद्य (adya) - today; नन्दन्ति (nandanti) - rejoice; तूर्याणि (tūryāṇi) - musical instruments; मङ्गल्यानि (maṅgalyāṇi) - auspicious; जनार्दन (janārdana) - O Janardana; मिश्रा (miśrā) - mixed; दुन्दुभि (dundubhi) - drums; निर्घोषैः (nirghoṣaiḥ) - with sounds; शङ्खाः (śaṅkhāḥ) - conches; च (ca) - and; आडम्बरैः (āḍambaraiḥ) - with pomp; सह (saha) - together; वीणा (vīṇā) - lutes; वा (vā) - or; न (na) - not; अद्य (adya) - today; वाद्यन्ते (vādyante) - are played; शम्य (śamya) - quiet; ताल (tāla) - rhythms; स्वनैः (svanaiḥ) - with sounds; सह (saha) - together;]
(Today, O Janardana, the auspicious musical instruments do not rejoice, mixed with the sounds of drums, conches, and pomp. Nor are the lutes played today, together with quiet rhythms and sounds.)

मङ्गल्यानि च गीतानि न गायन्ति पठन्ति च। स्तुतियुक्तानि रम्याणि ममानीकेषु बन्दिनः ॥७-५०-१२॥

[मङ्गल्यानि (maṅgalyāni) - auspicious; च (ca) - and; गीतानि (gītāni) - songs; न (na) - not; गायन्ति (gāyanti) - sing; पठन्ति (paṭhanti) - recite; च (ca) - and; स्तुतियुक्तानि (stutiyuktāni) - filled with praises; रम्याणि (ramyāṇi) - beautiful; मम (mama) - my; अनीकेषु (anīkeṣu) - in the armies; बन्दिनः (bandinaḥ) - bards;]
(Auspicious songs, filled with praises and beauty, are not sung or recited by the bards in my armies.)

योधाश्चापि हि मां दृष्ट्वा निवर्तन्ते ह्यधोमुखाः। कर्माणि च यथापूर्वं कृत्वा नाभिवदन्ति माम् ॥७-५०-१३॥
yodhāś cāpi hi māṃ dṛṣṭvā nivartante hy adhomukhāḥ। karmāṇi ca yathāpūrvaṃ kṛtvā nābhivadanti mām ॥7-50-13॥
[योधाः (yodhāḥ) - warriors; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; हि (hi) - indeed; माम् (mām) - me; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; निवर्तन्ते (nivartante) - turn back; हि (hi) - indeed; अधोमुखाः (adhomukhāḥ) - downcast; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; च (ca) - and; यथा (yathā) - as; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; न (na) - not; अभिवदन्ति (abhivadanti) - speak; माम् (mām) - to me;]
(The warriors, indeed, having seen me, turn back downcast. And having done actions as before, they do not speak to me.)
The warriors, upon seeing me, turn back with their heads down. They perform their duties as before but do not speak to me.
अपि स्वस्ति भवेदद्य भ्रातृभ्यो मम माधव। न हि शुध्यति मे भावो दृष्ट्वा स्वजनमाकुलम् ॥७-५०-१४॥
api svasti bhavedadya bhrātṛbhyo mama mādhava। na hi śudhyati me bhāvo dṛṣṭvā svajanamākulam ॥7-50-14॥
[अपि (api) - whether; स्वस्ति (svasti) - well-being; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; अद्य (adya) - today; भ्रातृभ्यः (bhrātṛbhyaḥ) - to brothers; मम (mama) - my; माधव (mādhava) - O Mādhava; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; शुध्यति (śudhyati) - is purified; मे (me) - my; भावः (bhāvaḥ) - emotion; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - seeing; स्वजनम् (svajanam) - own people; आकुलम् (ākulam) - distressed;]
(Whether there may be well-being today for my brothers, O Mādhava. Indeed, my emotion is not purified seeing my own people distressed.)
O Mādhava, I wonder if my brothers will be well today. My heart is troubled seeing my own people in distress.
अपि पाञ्चालराजस्य विराटस्य च मानद। सर्वेषां चैव योधानां सामग्र्यं स्यान्ममाच्युत ॥७-५०-१५॥
api pāñcālarājasya virāṭasya ca mānada। sarveṣāṃ caiva yodhānāṃ sāmagryaṃ syānmamācyuta ॥7-50-15॥
[अपि (api) - also; पाञ्चालराजस्य (pāñcālarājasya) - of the king of Panchala; विराटस्य (virāṭasya) - of Virata; च (ca) - and; मानद (mānada) - O giver of honor; सर्वेषां (sarveṣāṃ) - of all; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; योधानां (yodhānāṃ) - of the warriors; सामग्र्यं (sāmagryaṃ) - the assembly; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; मम (mama) - my; अच्युत (acyuta) - O infallible one;]
(Also, O giver of honor, the assembly of the king of Panchala, of Virata, and indeed of all the warriors may be mine, O infallible one.)

न च मामद्य सौभद्रः प्रहृष्टो भ्रातृभिः सह। रणादायान्तमुचितं प्रत्युद्याति हसन्निव ॥७-५०-१६॥
na ca mām adya saubhadraḥ prahṛṣṭo bhrātṛbhiḥ saha। raṇād āyāntam ucitaṃ pratyudyāti hasann iva ॥7-50-16॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - me; अद्य (adya) - today; सौभद्रः (saubhadraḥ) - Saubhadra; प्रहृष्टः (prahṛṣṭaḥ) - joyful; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - with brothers; सह (saha) - together; रणात् (raṇāt) - from battle; आयान्तम् (āyāntam) - coming; उचितम् (ucitam) - proper; प्रत्युद्याति (pratyudyāti) - goes to meet; हसन् (hasan) - smiling; इव (iva) - as if;]
(And today, Saubhadra, joyful with his brothers, does not go to meet me coming from battle, as if smiling.)

एवं सङ्कथयन्तौ तौ प्रविष्टौ शिबिरं स्वकम्। ददृशाते भृशास्वस्थान्पाण्डवान्नष्टचेतसः ॥७-५०-१७॥
evaṃ saṅkathayantau tau praviṣṭau śibiraṃ svakam। dadṛśāte bhṛśāsvasthānpāṇḍavānnaṣṭacetasaḥ ॥7-50-17॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; सङ्कथयन्तौ (saṅkathayantau) - conversing; तौ (tau) - those two; प्रविष्टौ (praviṣṭau) - entered; शिबिरम् (śibiram) - camp; स्वकम् (svakam) - their own; ददृशाते (dadṛśāte) - saw; भृश (bhṛśa) - very; अस्वस्थान् (asvasthān) - disturbed; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - Pāṇḍavas; नष्टचेतसः (naṣṭacetasaḥ) - lost in thought;]
(Thus conversing, those two entered their own camp. They saw the Pāṇḍavas very disturbed and lost in thought.)

दृष्ट्वा भ्रातॄंश्च पुत्रांश्च विमना वानरध्वजः। अपश्यंश्चैव सौभद्रमिदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥७-५०-१८॥
dṛṣṭvā bhrātṝṃśca putrāṃśca vimanā vānaradhvajaḥ। apaśyaṃścaiva saubhadramidaṃ vacanamabravīt ॥7-50-18॥
[दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; भ्रातॄन् (bhrātṝn) - brothers; च (ca) - and; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; च (ca) - and; विमना (vimanā) - disheartened; वानरध्वजः (vānaradhvajaḥ) - Arjuna; अपश्यन् (apaśyan) - not seeing; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सौभद्रम् (saubhadram) - Abhimanyu; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Having seen his brothers and sons, disheartened Arjuna, not seeing Abhimanyu, indeed spoke this speech.)
Seeing his brothers and sons, Arjuna, with a heavy heart, not finding Abhimanyu, spoke these words.
मुखवर्णोऽप्रसन्नो वः सर्वेषामेव लक्ष्यते। न चाभिमन्युं पश्यामि न च मां प्रतिनन्दथ ॥७-५०-१९॥
mukhavarṇo'prasanno vaḥ sarveṣāmeva lakṣyate। na cābhimanyuṃ paśyāmi na ca māṃ pratinandatha ॥7-50-19॥
[मुख (mukha) - face; वर्णः (varṇaḥ) - color; अप्रसन्नः (aprasannaḥ) - not cheerful; वः (vaḥ) - your; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; एव (eva) - indeed; लक्ष्यते (lakṣyate) - is seen; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अभिमन्युम् (abhimanyuṃ) - Abhimanyu; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; माम् (mām) - me; प्रतिनन्दथ (pratinandatha) - you greet;]
(The color of your face is not cheerful, indeed, it is seen. I do not see Abhimanyu, and you do not greet me.)
The color of your faces appears dull, and I do not see Abhimanyu, nor do you acknowledge me.
मया श्रुतश्च द्रोणेन चक्रव्यूहो विनिर्मितः। न च वस्तस्य भेत्तास्ति ऋते सौभद्रमाहवे ॥७-५०-२०॥
mayā śrutaśca droṇena cakravyūho vinirmitaḥ। na ca vastasya bhettāsti ṛte saubhadramāhave ॥7-50-20॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; श्रुतः (śrutaḥ) - heard; च (ca) - and; द्रोणेन (droṇena) - by Droṇa; चक्रव्यूहः (cakravyūhaḥ) - military formation; विनिर्मितः (vinirmitaḥ) - constructed; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; वः (vaḥ) - your; तस्य (tasya) - of it; भेत्ता (bhettā) - breaker; अस्ति (asti) - is; ऋते (ṛte) - except; सौभद्रम् (saubhadram) - Abhimanyu; आहवे (āhave) - in battle;]
(By me and by Droṇa, the military formation was constructed. And there is no breaker of it except Abhimanyu in battle.)
I have heard that the military formation was constructed by Droṇa. None among you can break it except Abhimanyu in battle.
न चोपदिष्टस्तस्यासीन्मयानीकविनिर्गमः। कच्चिन्न बालो युष्माभिः परानीकं प्रवेशितः ॥७-५०-२१॥

(This indeed is the path ordained by the knowers of the scriptures for those who are fighting, the heroes who do not retreat, the best among the wise.)
This is the path prescribed by the wise scholars of scriptures for the brave warriors who do not turn back in battle, the best among the wise.
ध्रुवं युद्धे हि मरणं शूराणामनिवर्तिनाम्। गतः पुण्यकृतां लोकानभिमन्युर्न संशयः ॥७-५०-६४॥

(Indeed, death in battle is certain for heroes who do not turn back. Abhimanyu has gone to the worlds of the virtuous, there is no doubt.)

(Indeed, perhaps for adornment, your armor, weapons, and arms, and words to speak in assemblies, protected my son.)

एवमुक्त्वा ततो वाक्यं तिष्ठंश्चापवरासिमान्। न स्माशक्यत बीभत्सुः केनचित्प्रसमीक्षितुम् ॥७-५०-७९॥

(Thus having spoken those words, standing with a bow in hand, Bibhatsu (Arjuna) indeed was not able to be looked at by anyone.)

(Then, the king, greatly afflicted in mind by the grief for his son, the lotus-eyed and angry one, spoke words.)
