एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचस्तस्य केशवस्य महात्मनः। सुभद्रा पुत्रशोकार्ता विललाप सुदुःखिता ॥७-५५-१॥
etacchrutvā vacastasya keśavasya mahātmanaḥ। subhadrā putraśokārtā vilalāpa suduḥkhitā ॥7-55-1॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; तस्य (tasya) - his; केशवस्य (keśavasya) - of Keshava; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - great soul; सुभद्रा (subhadrā) - Subhadra; पुत्र (putra) - son; शोक (śoka) - grief; आर्ता (ārtā) - afflicted; विललाप (vilalāpa) - lamented; सुदुःखिता (suduḥkhitā) - very sorrowful;]
(Having heard these words of Keshava, the great soul, Subhadra, afflicted with grief for her son, lamented very sorrowfully.)
Upon hearing the words of the great Keshava, Subhadra, overwhelmed with grief for her son, began to lament deeply.
हा पुत्र मम मन्दायाः कथं संयुगमेत्य ह। निधनं प्राप्तवांस्तात पितृतुल्यपराक्रमः ॥७-५५-२॥
hā putra mama mandāyāḥ kathaṃ saṃyugametya ha। nidhanaṃ prāptavāṃstāta pitṛtulyaparākramaḥ ॥7-55-2॥

कथमिन्दीवरश्यामं सुदंष्ट्रं चारुलोचनम्। मुखं ते दृश्यते वत्स गुण्ठितं रणरेणुना ॥७-५५-३॥
katham indīvaraśyāmaṃ sudaṃṣṭraṃ cārulocanam। mukhaṃ te dṛśyate vatsa guṇṭhitaṃ raṇareṇunā ॥7-55-3॥

नूनं शूरं निपतितं त्वां पश्यन्त्यनिवर्तिनम्। सुशिरोग्रीवबाह्वंसं व्यूढोरस्कं निरूदरम् ॥७-५५-४॥
nūnaṃ śūraṃ nipatitaṃ tvāṃ paśyantyanivartinam। suśirogrīvabāhvaṃsaṃ vyūḍhoraskaṃ nirūdaram ॥7-55-4॥

[चारु (cāru) - beautiful; उपचित (upacita) - well-formed; सर्व (sarva) - all; अङ्गम् (aṅgam) - limbs; स्व (sva) - own; अक्षं (akṣaṃ) - eyes; शस्त्र (śastra) - weapon; क्षत (kṣata) - wounded; आचितम् (ācitam) - covered; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; त्वा (tvā) - you; निरीक्षन्ते (nirīkṣante) - observe; नूनम् (nūnam) - indeed; चन्द्रम् (candram) - moon; इव (iva) - like; उदितम् (uditam) - risen;]
(Beautiful, well-formed limbs, own eyes covered with weapon wounds. Beings observe you indeed like the risen moon.)

शयनीयं पुरा यस्य स्पर्ध्यास्तरणसंवृतम्। भूमावद्य कथं शेषे विप्रविद्धः सुखोचितः ॥७-५५-६॥
śayanīyaṃ purā yasya spardhyāstaraṇasaṃvṛtam। bhūmāvadya kathaṃ śeṣe vipraviddhaḥ sukhocitaḥ ॥7-55-6॥
[शयनीयं (śayanīyaṃ) - bed; पुरा (purā) - formerly; यस्य (yasya) - whose; स्पर्ध्या (spardhyā) - rival; आस्तरण (āstaraṇa) - covering; संवृतम् (saṃvṛtam) - enclosed; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; अद्य (adya) - now; कथम् (katham) - how; शेषे (śeṣe) - do you lie; विप्रविद्धः (vipraviddhaḥ) - thrown away; सुखोचितः (sukhocitaḥ) - accustomed to comfort;]
(The bed which was formerly enclosed with a rival covering, how do you now lie thrown away on the ground, accustomed to comfort?)
Once, your bed was covered with luxurious spreads, but now, accustomed to comfort, how do you find yourself lying discarded on the ground?
योऽन्वास्यत पुरा वीरो वरस्त्रीभिर्महाभुजः। कथमन्वास्यते सोऽद्य शिवाभिः पतितो मृधे ॥७-५५-७॥

योऽस्तूयत पुरा हृष्टैः सूतमागधबन्दिभिः। सोऽद्य क्रव्याद्गणैर्घोरैर्विनदद्भिरुपास्यते ॥७-५५-८॥

(He who was praised formerly by delighted charioteers, bards, and heralds, today is attended by terrible, howling groups of flesh-eating beings.)
The one who was once praised by joyful charioteers, bards, and heralds, is now surrounded by terrifying, howling groups of flesh-eating creatures.
पाण्डवेषु च नाथेषु वृष्णिवीरेषु चाभिभो। पाञ्चालेषु च वीरेषु हतः केनास्यनाथवत् ॥७-५५-९॥
pāṇḍaveṣu ca nātheṣu vṛṣṇivīreṣu cābhibho। pāñcāleṣu ca vīreṣu hataḥ kenāsyanāthavat ॥7-55-9॥

O lord, among the Pandavas, Vrishni heroes, and Panchala heroes, who has killed this one as if he were without a protector?
अतृप्तदर्शना पुत्र दर्शनस्य तवानघ। मन्दभाग्या गमिष्यामि व्यक्तमद्य यमक्षयम् ॥७-५५-१०॥
atṛptadarśanā putra darśanasya tavānagha। mandabhāgyā gamiṣyāmi vyaktamadya yamakṣayam ॥7-55-10॥
[अतृप्तदर्शना (atṛptadarśanā) - unsatisfied with seeing; पुत्र (putra) - son; दर्शनस्य (darśanasya) - of seeing; तव (tava) - your; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; मन्दभाग्या (mandabhāgyā) - unfortunate; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - I shall go; व्यक्तम् (vyaktam) - clearly; अद्य (adya) - today; यमक्षयम् (yamakṣayam) - to the abode of Yama;]
(Unsatisfied with seeing, O sinless son, your sight, unfortunate I shall clearly go today to the abode of Yama.)
O sinless son, I am unfortunate and unsatisfied with seeing you. Clearly, today I shall go to the abode of Yama.
विशालाक्षं सुकेशान्तं चारुवाक्यं सुगन्धि च। तव पुत्र कदा भूयो मुखं द्रक्ष्यामि निर्व्रणम् ॥७-५५-११॥
viśālākṣaṃ sukeśāntaṃ cāruvākyaṃ sugandhi ca। tava putra kadā bhūyo mukhaṃ drakṣyāmi nirvraṇam ॥7-55-11॥
[विशालाक्षम् (viśālākṣam) - large-eyed; सुकेशान्तम् (sukeśāntam) - with beautiful hair; चारुवाक्यम् (cāruvākyam) - sweet-spoken; सुगन्धि (sugandhi) - fragrant; च (ca) - and; तव (tava) - your; पुत्र (putra) - son; कदा (kadā) - when; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; मुखम् (mukham) - face; द्रक्ष्यामि (drakṣyāmi) - shall see; निर्व्रणम् (nirvraṇam) - unwounded;]
(Large-eyed, with beautiful hair, sweet-spoken, fragrant and your son, when shall I see again the unwounded face?)
O son, when will I see your large eyes, beautiful hair, sweet words, and fragrant unwounded face again?
धिग्बलं भीमसेनस्य धिक्पार्थस्य धनुष्मताम्। धिग्वीर्यं वृष्णिवीराणां पाञ्चालानां च धिग्बलम् ॥७-५५-१२॥
dhigbalaṁ bhīmasenasya dhikpārthasya dhanuṣmatām। dhigvīryaṁ vṛṣṇivīrāṇāṁ pāñcālānāṁ ca dhigbalam ॥7-55-12॥
[धिक् (dhik) - shame; बलम् (balam) - strength; भीमसेनस्य (bhīmasenasya) - of Bhimasena; धिक् (dhik) - shame; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Partha; धनुष्मताम् (dhanuṣmatām) - of the bowmen; धिक् (dhik) - shame; वीर्यम् (vīryam) - valor; वृष्णि (vṛṣṇi) - of the Vrishni; वीराणाम् (vīrāṇām) - of the heroes; पाञ्चालानाम् (pāñcālānām) - of the Panchalas; च (ca) - and; धिक् (dhik) - shame; बलम् (balam) - strength;]
(Shame on the strength of Bhimasena, shame on the bowmen of Partha. Shame on the valor of the heroes of the Vrishni and the Panchalas, and shame on their strength.)

धिक्केकयांस्तथा चेदीन्मत्स्यांश्चैवाथ सृञ्जयान्। ये त्वा रणे गतं वीरं न जानन्ति निपातितम् ॥७-५५-१३॥
dhikkekayāṃstathā cedīnmatSyāṃścaivātha sṛñjayān। ye tvā raṇe gataṃ vīraṃ na jānanti nipātitam ॥7-55-13॥
[धिक् (dhik) - shame; केकयान् (kekayān) - Kekayas; तथा (tathā) - also; चेदीन् (cedīn) - Cedis; मत्स्यान् (matsyān) - Matsyas; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अथ (atha) - then; सृञ्जयान् (sṛñjayān) - Sṛñjayas; ये (ye) - who; त्वा (tvā) - you; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; गतं (gatam) - gone; वीरं (vīram) - hero; न (na) - not; जानन्ति (jānanti) - know; निपातितम् (nipātitam) - fallen;]
(Shame on the Kekayas, also the Cedis, Matsyas, and then the Sṛñjayas, who do not know that you, the hero, have fallen in battle.)

अद्य पश्यामि पृथिवीं शून्यामिव हतत्विषम्। अभिमन्युमपश्यन्ती शोकव्याकुललोचना ॥७-५५-१४॥
adya paśyāmi pṛthivīṃ śūnyām iva hatatviṣam। abhimanyum apaśyantī śokavyākulalocanā ॥7-55-14॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīṃ) - earth; शून्याम् (śūnyām) - empty; इव (iva) - as if; हतत्विषम् (hatatviṣam) - bereft of splendor; अभिमन्युम् (abhimanyum) - Abhimanyu; अपश्यन्ती (apaśyantī) - not seeing; शोकव्याकुललोचना (śokavyākulalocanā) - eyes filled with grief;]
(Today I see the earth as if empty, bereft of splendor, not seeing Abhimanyu, with eyes filled with grief.)
Today, I perceive the earth as desolate and devoid of its brilliance, as if mourning the absence of Abhimanyu, with eyes overwhelmed by sorrow.
स्वस्रीयं वासुदेवस्य पुत्रं गाण्डीवधन्वनः। कथं त्वा विरथं वीरं द्रक्ष्याम्यन्यैर्निपातितम् ॥७-५५-१५॥
svasrīyaṃ vāsudevasya putraṃ gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ। kathaṃ tvā virathaṃ vīraṃ drakṣyāmyanyairnipātitam ॥7-55-15॥
[स्वस्रीयं (svasrīyaṃ) - sister's son; वासुदेवस्य (vāsudevasya) - of Vasudeva; पुत्रं (putraṃ) - son; गाण्डीवधन्वनः (gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ) - of the wielder of the Gandiva bow; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; त्वा (tvā) - you; विरथं (virathaṃ) - without a chariot; वीरं (vīraṃ) - hero; द्रक्ष्यामि (drakṣyāmi) - shall I see; अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by others; निपातितम् (nipātitam) - felled;]
(How shall I see you, the sister's son of Vasudeva, the son of the wielder of the Gandiva bow, a hero without a chariot, felled by others?)
How can I witness you, the nephew of Vasudeva and son of the Gandiva bow wielder, a hero without his chariot, struck down by others?
हा वीर दृष्टो नष्टश्च धनं स्वप्न इवासि मे। अहो ह्यनित्यं मानुष्यं जलबुद्बुदचञ्चलम् ॥७-५५-१६॥
hā vīra dṛṣṭo naṣṭaśca dhanaṃ svapna ivāsi me। aho hyanityaṃ mānuṣyaṃ jalabudbudacañcalam ॥7-55-16॥
[हा (hā) - alas; वीर (vīra) - hero; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - seen; नष्टः (naṣṭaḥ) - lost; च (ca) - and; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth; स्वप्नः (svapnaḥ) - dream; इव (iva) - like; असि (asi) - are; मे (me) - my; अहो (aho) - oh; हि (hi) - indeed; अनित्यम् (anityam) - impermanent; मानुष्यं (mānuṣyam) - human life; जलबुद्बुद (jalabudbuda) - water bubble; चञ्चलम् (cañcalam) - fickle;]
(Alas, hero, seen and lost is the wealth, like a dream you are to me. Oh, indeed impermanent is human life, like a water bubble, fickle.)

इमां ते तरुणीं भार्यां त्वदाधिभिरभिप्लुताम्। कथं सन्धारयिष्यामि विवत्सामिव धेनुकाम् ॥७-५५-१७॥
imāṃ te taruṇīṃ bhāryāṃ tvadādhibhirabhiplutām। kathaṃ sandhārayiṣyāmi vivatsāmiva dhenukām ॥7-55-17॥
[इमां (imām) - this; ते (te) - your; तरुणीं (taruṇīm) - young; भार्यां (bhāryām) - wife; त्वदाधिभिः (tvadādhibhiḥ) - by your afflictions; अभिप्लुताम् (abhiplutām) - overwhelmed; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; सन्धारयिष्यामि (sandhārayiṣyāmi) - shall I sustain; विवत्साम् (vivatsām) - calf-less; इव (iva) - like; धेनुकाम् (dhenukām) - a cow;]
(How shall I sustain this young wife of yours, overwhelmed by your afflictions, like a cow without a calf?)
How can I support your young wife, who is overwhelmed by your troubles, like a cow that has lost its calf?
अहो ह्यकाले प्रस्थानं कृतवानसि पुत्रक। विहाय फलकाले मां सुगृद्धां तव दर्शने ॥७-५५-१८॥
aho hyakāle prasthānaṃ kṛtavānasi putraka। vihāya phalakāle māṃ sugṛddhāṃ tava darśane ॥7-55-18॥
[अहो (aho) - alas; हि (hi) - indeed; अकाले (akāle) - untimely; प्रस्थानम् (prasthānam) - departure; कृतवानसि (kṛtavānasi) - you have made; पुत्रक (putraka) - O son; विहाय (vihāya) - leaving behind; फलकाले (phalakāle) - at the time of fruition; माम् (mām) - me; सुगृद्धाम् (sugṛddhām) - eager; तव (tava) - your; दर्शने (darśane) - sight;]
(Alas, indeed, you have made an untimely departure, O son, leaving me eager at the time of fruition for your sight.)
"Alas, my son, you have departed at an untimely moment, leaving me eager to see you at the time of fruition."
नूनं गतिः कृतान्तस्य प्राज्ञैरपि सुदुर्विदा। यत्र त्वं केशवे नाथे सङ्ग्रामेऽनाथवद्धतः ॥७-५५-१९॥
nūnaṃ gatiḥ kṛtāntasya prājñairapi sudurvidā। yatra tvaṃ keśave nāthe saṅgrāme'nāthavaddhataḥ ॥7-55-19॥
[नूनम् (nūnam) - indeed; गतिः (gatiḥ) - the course; कृतान्तस्य (kṛtāntasya) - of destiny; प्राज्ञैः (prājñaiḥ) - by the wise; अपि (api) - even; सुदुर्विदा (sudurvidā) - very difficult to know; यत्र (yatra) - where; त्वम् (tvam) - you; केशवे (keśave) - when Keshava; नाथे (nāthe) - the protector; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; अनाथवत् (anāthavat) - like one without a protector; हतः (hataḥ) - killed;]
(Indeed, the course of destiny is very difficult to know even by the wise; where you, when Keshava, the protector, in battle, like one without a protector, were killed.)
Indeed, the path of destiny is inscrutable even to the wise; where you, with Keshava as the protector, were slain in battle as if you were without a guardian.
यज्वनां दानशीलानां ब्राह्मणानां कृतात्मनाम्। चरितब्रह्मचर्याणां पुण्यतीर्थावगाहिनाम् ॥७-५५-२०॥
yajvanāṃ dānaśīlānāṃ brāhmaṇānāṃ kṛtātmanām। caritabrahmacaryāṇāṃ puṇyatīrthāvagāhinām ॥7-55-20॥
[यज्वनां (yajvanāṃ) - of the sacrificers; दानशीलानां (dānaśīlānāṃ) - of the charitable; ब्राह्मणानां (brāhmaṇānāṃ) - of the Brahmins; कृतात्मनाम् (kṛtātmanām) - of the self-realized; चरितब्रह्मचर्याणां (caritabrahmacaryāṇāṃ) - of those who have practiced celibacy; पुण्यतीर्थावगाहिनाम् (puṇyatīrthāvagāhinām) - of those who have bathed in holy places;]
(Of the sacrificers, the charitable, the Brahmins, the self-realized, those who have practiced celibacy, and those who have bathed in holy places.)
This verse describes the qualities of individuals who are sacrificers, charitable, Brahmins, self-realized, have practiced celibacy, and have bathed in holy places.
कृतज्ञानां वदान्यानां गुरुशुश्रूषिणामपि। सहस्रदक्षिणानां च या गतिस्तामवाप्नुहि ॥७-५५-२१॥
kṛtajñānāṃ vadānyānāṃ guruśuśrūṣiṇāmapi। sahasradakṣiṇānāṃ ca yā gatistāmavāpnuhi ॥7-55-21॥
[कृतज्ञानाम् (kṛtajñānām) - of the grateful; वदान्यानाम् (vadānyānām) - of the generous; गुरुशुश्रूषिणाम् (guruśuśrūṣiṇām) - of those who serve the guru; अपि (api) - also; सहस्रदक्षिणानाम् (sahasradakṣiṇānām) - of those who give thousands in gifts; च (ca) - and; या (yā) - which; गतिः (gatiḥ) - state; ताम् (tām) - that; अवाप्नुहि (avāpnuhi) - attain;]
(Attain that state which is for the grateful, the generous, those who serve the guru, and those who give thousands in gifts.)
