(Then, entering Arjuna's house, the incomparable Lord, having touched water, the lotus-eyed one, on the auspicious ground, spread an auspicious bed with sacred grass resembling cat's eye gems.)
Then, the lotus-eyed Lord entered Arjuna's house, performed the purification by touching water, and spread an auspicious bed on the ground with sacred grass that resembled cat's eye gems.
ततो माल्येन विधिवल्लाजैर्गन्धैः सुमङ्गलैः। अलञ्चकार तां शय्यां परिवार्यायुधोत्तमैः ॥७-५६-२॥
tato mālyena vidhivallājairgandhaiḥ sumaṅgalaiḥ। alañcakāra tāṃ śayyāṃ parivāryāyudhottamaiḥ ॥7-56-2॥

स्मयमानस्तु गोविन्दः फल्गुनं प्रत्यभाषत। सुप्यतां पार्थ भद्रं ते कल्याणाय व्रजाम्यहम् ॥७-५६-५॥

With a smile, Govinda said to Arjuna: "Rest well, O son of Pritha; I am going for your welfare."
स्थापयित्वा ततो द्वाःस्थान्गोप्तॄंश्चात्तायुधान्नरान्। दारुकानुगतः श्रीमान्विवेश शिबिरं स्वकम् ॥ शिश्ये च शयने शुभ्रे बहुकृत्यं विचिन्तयन् ॥७-५६-६॥

na pāṇḍavānāṃ śibire kaścitsuṣvāpa tāṃ niśām। prajāgaraḥ sarvajanamāviveśa viśāṃ pate ॥7-56-7॥

पुत्रशोकाभिभूतेन प्रतिज्ञातो महात्मना। सहसा सिन्धुराजस्य वधो गाण्डीवधन्वना ॥७-५६-८॥

(Overcome by the grief of his son, the great soul promised the sudden killing of the king of Sindhu by the wielder of the Gandiva bow.)

तत्कथं नु महाबाहुर्वासविः परवीरहा। प्रतिज्ञां सफलां कुर्यादिति ते समचिन्तयन् ॥७-५६-९॥

(That mighty-armed son of Vāsava, the destroyer of enemy heroes, how indeed would he make the promise fruitful, thus they pondered.)

कष्टं हीदं व्यवसितं पाण्डवेन महात्मना। पुत्रशोकाभितप्तेन प्रतिज्ञा महती कृता ॥७-५६-१०॥

भ्रातरश्चापि विक्रान्ता बहुलानि बलानि च। धृतराष्ट्रस्य पुत्रेण सर्वं तस्मै निवेदितम् ॥७-५६-११॥

स हत्वा सैन्धवं सङ्ख्ये पुनरेतु धनञ्जयः। जित्वा रिपुगणांश्चैव पारयत्वर्जुनो व्रतम् ॥७-५६-१२॥
sa hatvā saindhavaṃ saṅkhye punaretu dhanañjayaḥ। jitvā ripugaṇāṃścaiva pārayatvarjuno vratam ॥7-56-12॥
[स (sa) - he; हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; सैन्धवम् (saindhavam) - the Sindhu king; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एतु (etu) - should return; धनञ्जयः (dhanañjayaḥ) - Dhananjaya (Arjuna); जित्वा (jitvā) - having conquered; रिपुगणान् (ripugaṇān) - the host of enemies; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - certainly; पारयतु (pārayatu) - should accomplish; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; व्रतम् (vratam) - vow;]
(He, having killed the Sindhu king in battle, should return again, Dhananjaya. Having conquered the host of enemies, Arjuna should certainly accomplish the vow.)
After slaying the Sindhu king in battle, Dhananjaya (Arjuna) should return. Arjuna must fulfill his vow by defeating the host of enemies.
अहत्वा सिन्धुराजं हि धूमकेतुं प्रवेक्ष्यति। न ह्येतदनृतं कर्तुमर्हः पार्थो धनञ्जयः ॥७-५६-१३॥
ahatvā sindhurājaṃ hi dhūmaketuṃ pravekṣyati। na hyetadanṛtaṃ kartumarhaḥ pārtho dhanañjayaḥ ॥7-56-13॥

(Without killing the king of Sindhu, Dhumaketu will indeed enter. Arjuna, the son of Pritha, is not fit to do this false act.)

धर्मपुत्रः कथं राजा भविष्यति मृतेऽर्जुने। तस्मिन्हि विजयः कृत्स्नः पाण्डवेन समाहितः ॥७-५६-१४॥
dharmaputraḥ kathaṁ rājā bhaviṣyati mṛte'rjune। tasminhi vijayaḥ kṛtsnaḥ pāṇḍavena samāhitaḥ ॥7-56-14॥

(How will the son of Dharma become king with Arjuna dead? Indeed, in him, the entire victory is established by the Pandava.)
"How will Yudhishthira become king if Arjuna is dead? Indeed, all victory is vested in him by the Pandava."
यदि नः सुकृतं किञ्चिद्यदि दत्तं हुतं यदि। फलेन तस्य सर्वस्य सव्यसाची जयत्वरीन् ॥७-५६-१५॥
yadi naḥ sukṛtaṃ kiñcidyadi dattaṃ hutaṃ yadi। phalena tasya sarvasya savyasācī jayatvarīn ॥7-56-15॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; नः (naḥ) - our; सुकृतं (sukṛtaṃ) - good deed; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - something; यदि (yadi) - if; दत्तं (dattaṃ) - given; हुतं (hutaṃ) - offered; यदि (yadi) - if; फलेन (phalena) - by the fruit; तस्य (tasya) - of that; सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of all; सव्यसाची (savyasācī) - Arjuna; जयतु (jayatu) - may conquer; अरिन् (arin) - enemies;]
(If there is any good deed of ours, if anything has been given or offered, by the fruit of all that, may Arjuna conquer the enemies.)
If we have done any good deeds, given or offered anything, may Arjuna, by the result of all that, conquer his enemies.
एवं कथयतां तेषां जयमाशंसतां प्रभो। कृच्छ्रेण महता राजन्रजनी व्यत्यवर्तत ॥७-५६-१६॥
evaṃ kathayatāṃ teṣāṃ jayamāśaṃsatāṃ prabho। kṛcchreṇa mahatā rājanrajanī vyatyavartata ॥7-56-16॥

(Thus, of those speaking, desiring victory, O lord, with great difficulty, O king, the night passed away.)

तस्यां रजन्यां मध्ये तु प्रतिबुद्धो जनार्दनः। स्मृत्वा प्रतिज्ञां पार्थस्य दारुकं प्रत्यभाषत ॥७-५६-१७॥
tasyāṃ rajanyāṃ madhye tu pratibuddho janārdanaḥ। smṛtvā pratijñāṃ pārthasya dārukaṃ pratyabhāṣata ॥7-56-17॥
[तस्याम् (tasyām) - in that; रजन्याम् (rajanyām) - night; मध्ये (madhye) - in the middle; तु (tu) - but; प्रतिबुद्धः (pratibuddhaḥ) - awakened; जनार्दनः (janārdanaḥ) - Janardana; स्मृत्वा (smṛtvā) - remembering; प्रतिज्ञाम् (pratijñām) - promise; पार्थस्य (pārthasya) - of Partha; दारुकम् (dārukam) - Daruka; प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - addressed;]
(In that night, in the middle, but awakened Janardana, remembering the promise of Partha, addressed Daruka.)

अर्जुनेन प्रतिज्ञातमार्तेन हतबन्धुना। जयद्रथं हनिष्यामि श्वोभूत इति दारुक ॥७-५६-१८॥
arjunena pratijñātam ārtena hatabandhunā। jayadrathaṃ haniṣyāmi śvobhūta iti dāruka ॥7-56-18॥

(By Arjuna, promised, distressed, having lost relatives, Jayadratha, I will kill, tomorrow, become, thus, O Dāruka.)
Distressed and having lost his relatives, Arjuna promised, "O Dāruka, I will kill Jayadratha by tomorrow."
तत्तु दुर्योधनः श्रुत्वा मन्त्रिभिर्मन्त्रयिष्यति। यथा जयद्रथं पार्थो न हन्यादिति संयुगे ॥७-५६-१९॥
tattu duryodhanaḥ śrutvā mantribhirmantrayiṣyati। yathā jayadrathaṃ pārtho na hanyāditi saṃyuge ॥7-56-19॥
[तत् (tat) - that; तु (tu) - but; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; मन्त्रिभिः (mantribhiḥ) - with ministers; मन्त्रयिष्यति (mantrayiṣyati) - will consult; यथा (yathā) - so that; जयद्रथम् (jayadratham) - Jayadratha; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Arjuna; न (na) - not; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - would kill; इति (iti) - thus; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle;]
(But Duryodhana, having heard that, will consult with his ministers so that Arjuna would not kill Jayadratha in battle thus.)
Upon hearing this, Duryodhana will consult with his ministers to devise a plan to ensure that Arjuna does not kill Jayadratha in the battle.
अक्षौहिण्यो हि ताः सर्वा रक्षिष्यन्ति जयद्रथम्। द्रोणश्च सह पुत्रेण सर्वास्त्रविधिपारगः ॥७-५६-२०॥
akṣauhiṇyo hi tāḥ sarvā rakṣiṣyanti jayadratham। droṇaśca saha putreṇa sarvāstravidhipāragaḥ ॥7-56-20॥

(Indeed, all those armies will protect Jayadratha. Drona, along with his son, is an expert in all weapons.)
