युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥
Yudhishthira said:
सुखेन रजनी व्युष्टा कच्चित्ते मधुसूदन। कच्चिज्ज्ञानानि सर्वाणि प्रसन्नानि तवाच्युत ॥७-५९-१॥
O Madhusudana, O Achyuta, did the night pass happily for you? Is all your knowledge clear?
सञ्जय उवाच॥
Sanjaya said:
वासुदेवोऽपि तद्युक्तं पर्यपृच्छद्युधिष्ठिरम्। ततः क्षत्ता प्रकृतयो न्यवेदयदुपस्थिताः ॥७-५९-२॥
Vasudeva, noticing Yudhishthira's appropriate engagement, inquired further. Then, the minister announced the presence of the subjects.
अनुज्ञातश्च राज्ञा स प्रावेशयत तं जनम्। विराटं भीमसेनं च धृष्टद्युम्नं च सात्यकिम् ॥७-५९-३॥
With the king's permission, he brought in the people, including Virata, Bhimasena, Dhrishtadyumna, and Satyaki.
शिखण्डिनं यमौ चैव चेकितानं च केकयान्। युयुत्सुं चैव कौरव्यं पाञ्चाल्यं चोत्तमौजसम् ॥७-५९-४॥
Shikhandin, the twins, Cekitana, the Kekayas, Yuyutsu, Kauravya, Panchalya, and Uttamaujas are mentioned.
एते चान्ये च बहवः क्षत्रियाः क्षत्रियर्षभम्। उपतस्थुर्महात्मानं विविशुश्चासनेषु ते ॥७-५९-५॥
These and many other warriors approached the best among warriors, the great soul, and took their seats.
एकस्मिन्नासने वीरावुपविष्टौ महाबलौ। कृष्णश्च युयुधानश्च महात्मानौ महाद्युती ॥७-५९-६॥
Krishna and Yuyudhana, both mighty and splendid heroes, were seated together, embodying great souls.
ततो युधिष्ठिरस्तेषां शृण्वतां मधुसूदनम्। अब्रवीत्पुण्डरीकाक्षमाभाष्य मधुरं वचः ॥७-५९-७॥
Then Yudhishthira, while listening to Madhusudana, addressed the lotus-eyed one with sweet words.
एकं त्वां वयमाश्रित्य सहस्राक्षमिवामराः। प्रार्थयामो जयं युद्धे शाश्वतानि सुखानि च ॥७-५९-८॥
We rely on you as one, like the thousand-eyed gods, and pray for victory in battle and everlasting happiness.
त्वं हि राज्यविनाशं च द्विषद्भिश्च निराक्रियाम्। क्लेशांश्च विविधान्कृष्ण सर्वांस्तानपि वेत्थ नः ॥७-५९-९॥
O Krishna, you are aware of the destruction of our kingdom, the removal caused by our enemies, and all the various troubles we face.
त्वयि सर्वेश सर्वेषामस्माकं भक्तवत्सल। सुखमायत्तमत्यर्थं यात्रा च मधुसूदन ॥७-५९-१०॥
O Madhusudana, the journey and our happiness are exceedingly dependent on you, O Lord of all and lover of devotees.
स तथा कुरु वार्ष्णेय यथा त्वयि मनो मम। अर्जुनस्य यथा सत्या प्रतिज्ञा स्याच्चिकीर्षिता ॥७-५९-११॥
Therefore, O descendant of Vṛṣṇi, act in such a way that my mind is in you, so that Arjuna's promise may be fulfilled as intended.
स भवांस्तारयत्वस्माद्दुःखामर्षमहार्णवात्। पारं तितीर्षतामद्य प्लवो नो भव माधव ॥७-५९-१२॥
O Madhava, may you be our boat today to lead us across the great ocean of sorrow and anger.
न हि तत्कुरुते सङ्ख्ये कार्तवीर्यसमस्त्वपि। रथी यत्कुरुते कृष्ण सारथिर्यत्नमास्थितः ॥७-५९-१३॥
Even a charioteer equal to Kārtavīrya does not perform in battle what Kṛṣṇa, the charioteer, does with effort.
वासुदेव उवाच॥
Vasudeva said:
सामरेष्वपि लोकेषु सर्वेषु न तथाविधः। शरासनधरः कश्चिद्यथा पार्थो धनञ्जयः ॥७-५९-१४॥
In all the worlds and battles, there is no one like Arjuna, the wielder of the bow, known as Dhananjaya.
वीर्यवानस्त्रसम्पन्नः पराक्रान्तो महाबलः। युद्धशौण्डः सदामर्षी तेजसा परमो नृणाम् ॥७-५९-१५॥
He is a valiant warrior, equipped with weapons, courageous and immensely strong. He is an expert in battle, always impatient, and stands supreme in brilliance among men.
स युवा वृषभस्कन्धो दीर्घबाहुर्महाबलः। सिंहर्षभगतिः श्रीमान्द्विषतस्ते हनिष्यति ॥७-५९-१६॥
The young hero, strong and mighty with broad shoulders like a bull, and the majestic gait of a lion, will defeat your enemies.
अहं च तत्करिष्यामि यथा कुन्तीसुतोऽर्जुनः। धार्तराष्ट्रस्य सैन्यानि धक्ष्यत्यग्निरिवोत्थितः ॥७-५९-१७॥
I will act in the same way as Arjuna, the son of Kunti, who will set ablaze the armies of Dhritarashtra like a rising fire.
अद्य तं पापकर्माणं क्षुद्रं सौभद्रघातिनम्। अपुनर्दर्शनं मार्गमिषुभिः क्षेप्स्यतेऽर्जुनः ॥७-५९-१८॥
Today, Arjuna will shoot arrows to send the wicked and mean killer of Subhadra on a path from which he will never return.
तस्याद्य गृध्राः श्येनाश्च वडगोमायवस्तथा। भक्षयिष्यन्ति मांसानि ये चान्ये पुरुषादकाः ॥७-५९-१९॥
Today, his flesh will be devoured by vultures, hawks, jackals, and other cannibals.
यद्यस्य देवा गोप्तारः सेन्द्राः सर्वे तथाप्यसौ। राजधानीं यमस्याद्य हतः प्राप्स्यति सङ्कुले ॥७-५९-२०॥
Even if all the gods, including Indra, are his protectors, today he will meet his end and reach the abode of Yama amidst chaos.
निहत्य सैन्धवं जिष्णुरद्य त्वामुपयास्यति। विशोको विज्वरो राजन्भव भूतिपुरस्कृतः ॥७-५९-२१॥
After defeating Saindhava, Arjuna will come to you today. Be without sorrow and fever, O king, and be prosperous.
