धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥
Dhritarashtra said:
श्वोभूते किमकार्षुस्ते दुःखशोकसमन्विताः। अभिमन्यौ हते तत्र के वायुध्यन्त मामकाः ॥७-६१-१॥
When the next day arrived, what actions did they take, overwhelmed with sorrow and grief? After Abhimanyu was slain, who among my people continued to fight?
जानन्तस्तस्य कर्माणि कुरवः सव्यसाचिनः। कथं तत्किल्बिषं कृत्वा निर्भया ब्रूहि मामकाः ॥७-६१-२॥
Knowing the actions of Arjuna and the Kurus, how can my people speak fearlessly after committing such a sin?
पुत्रशोकाभिसन्तप्तं क्रुद्धं मृत्युमिवान्तकम्। आयान्तं पुरुषव्याघ्रं कथं ददृशुराहवे ॥७-६१-३॥
Tormented by the grief of his son and filled with anger like the destroyer Death, how did they perceive the approaching tiger among men in the battle?
कपिराजध्वजं सङ्ख्ये विधुन्वानं महद्धनुः। दृष्ट्वा पुत्रपरिद्यूनं किमकुर्वन्त मामकाः ॥७-६१-४॥
Upon seeing the banner of the monkey king wielding a great bow in battle, my people, distressed for their son, wondered what action to take.
किं नु सञ्जय सङ्ग्रामे वृत्तं दुर्योधनं प्रति। परिदेवो महानत्र श्रुतो मे नाभिनन्दनम् ॥७-६१-५॥
Sanjaya, what indeed happened in the battle concerning Duryodhana? I heard a great lamentation here, which was not pleasing to me.
बभूवुर्ये मनोग्राह्याः शब्दाः श्रुतिसुखावहाः। न श्रूयन्तेऽद्य ते सर्वे सैन्धवस्य निवेशने ॥७-६१-६॥
The sounds that were once pleasing and understandable are no longer heard today in the house of the Saindhava.
स्तुवतां नाद्य श्रूयन्ते पुत्राणां शिबिरे मम। सूतमागधसङ्घानां नर्तकानां च सर्वशः ॥७-६१-७॥
Today, in my sons' camp, the sounds of praise from the bards, heralds, and dancers are completely absent.
शब्देन नादिताभीक्ष्णमभवद्यत्र मे श्रुतिः। दीनानामद्य तं शब्दं न शृणोमि समीरितम् ॥७-६१-८॥
My hearing was intensely resounded by the sound where it happened. Today, I do not hear that sound produced by the distressed.
निवेशने सत्यधृतेः सोमदत्तस्य सञ्जय। आसीनोऽहं पुरा तात शब्दमश्रौषमुत्तमम् ॥७-६१-९॥
O Sañjaya, while seated in the abode of Satyadhṛti, I once heard an excellent sound, O father.
तदद्य हीनपुण्योऽहमार्तस्वरनिनादितम्। निवेशनं हतोत्साहं पुत्राणां मम लक्षये ॥७-६१-१०॥
Today, I see my sons' home filled with the echoes of distress, lacking in virtue and enthusiasm.
विविंशतेर्दुर्मुखस्य चित्रसेनविकर्णयोः। अन्येषां च सुतानां मे न तथा श्रूयते ध्वनिः ॥७-६१-११॥
The sound of my sons, including Durmukha, Citraseṇa, and Vikarṇa, among the twenty, is not heard as much as that of others.
ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्या यं शिष्याः पर्युपासते। द्रोणपुत्रं महेष्वासं पुत्राणां मे परायणम् ॥७-६१-१२॥
Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and Vaishyas worship Drona's son, the great archer, as the ultimate refuge for my sons.
वितण्डालापसंलापैर्हुतयाचितवन्दितैः। गीतैश्च विविधैरिष्टै रमते यो दिवानिशम् ॥७-६१-१३॥
He who delights day and night in futile arguments, conversations, offerings, requests, praises, and various desired songs.
उपास्यमानो बहुभिः कुरुपाण्डवसात्वतैः। सूत तस्य गृहे शब्धो नाद्य द्रौणेर्यथा पुरा ॥७-६१-१४॥
O charioteer, today the sound in his house is not as it used to be before when he was worshipped by many, including the Kuru, Pandava, and Satvata.
द्रोणपुत्रं महेष्वासं गायना नर्तकाश्च ये। अत्यर्थमुपतिष्ठन्ति तेषां न श्रूयते ध्वनिः ॥७-६१-१५॥
The sound of the son of Droṇa, the great archer, along with the singers and dancers who attend excessively, is not heard.
विन्दानुविन्दयोः सायं शिबिरे यो महाध्वनिः। श्रूयते सोऽद्य न तथा केकयानां च वेश्मसु ॥७-६१-१६॥
The usual great sound heard in the evening in the camp of Vinda and Anuvinda is not as prominent today in the houses of the Kekayas.
नित्यप्रमुदितानां च तालगीतस्वनो महान्। नृत्यतां श्रूयते तात गणानां सोऽद्य न ध्वनिः ॥७-६१-१७॥
The joyous and rhythmic sounds of singing and dancing, which were always heard, O dear, are not heard today from the groups.
सप्ततन्तून्वितन्वाना यमुपासन्ति याजकाः। सौमदत्तिं श्रुतनिधिं तेषां न श्रूयते ध्वनिः ॥७-६१-१८॥
The priests who spread the seven threads worship Saumadatti, the treasure of knowledge, but their sound is not heard.
ज्याघोषो ब्रह्मघोषश्च तोमरासिरथध्वनिः। द्रोणस्यासीदविरतो गृहे तन्न शृणोम्यहम् ॥७-६१-१९॥
I do not hear the unceasing sounds of bowstrings, sacred chants, lances, swords, and chariots in Drona's house.
नानादेशसमुत्थानां गीतानां योऽभवत्स्वनः। वादित्रनादितानां च सोऽद्य न श्रूयते महान् ॥७-६१-२०॥
The great sound of songs and musical instruments that once arose from various regions is not heard today.
यदा प्रभृत्युपप्लव्याच्छान्तिमिच्छञ्जनार्दनः। आगतः सर्वभूतानामनुकम्पार्थमच्युतः ॥७-६१-२१॥
When Janardana, desiring peace from the turmoil, came out of compassion for all creatures, Acyuta.
ततोऽहमब्रुवं सूत मन्दं दुर्योधनं तदा। वासुदेवेन तीर्थेन पुत्र संशाम्य पाण्डवैः ॥७-६१-२२॥
Then I slowly addressed Sūta, saying, 'O Duryodhana, my son, make peace with the Pāṇḍavas through the pilgrimage guided by Vāsudeva.'
कालप्राप्तमहं मन्ये मा त्वं दुर्योधनातिगाः। शमे चेद्याचमानं त्वं प्रत्याख्यास्यसि केशवम् ॥ हितार्थमभिजल्पन्तं न तथास्त्यपराजयः ॥७-६१-२३॥
I believe it is the right time; do not go beyond Duryodhana. If you refuse Keshava, who is pleading for peace and speaking for the benefit, then there is no defeat.
प्रत्याचष्ट स दाशार्हमृषभं सर्वधन्विनाम्। अनुनेयानि जल्पन्तमनयान्नान्वपद्यत ॥७-६१-२४॥
He spoke to the leader of the Dasharhas, the foremost among archers, with words of conciliation, but did not adhere to any improper suggestions.
ततो दुःशासनस्यैव कर्णस्य च मतं द्वयोः। अन्ववर्तत हित्वा मां कृष्टः कालेन दुर्मतिः ॥७-६१-२५॥
Then, the evil-minded person, influenced by time, ignored me and followed the counsel of Duḥśāsana and Karṇa.
न ह्यहं द्यूतमिच्छामि विदुरो न प्रशंसति। सैन्धवो नेच्छते द्यूतं भीष्मो न द्यूतमिच्छति ॥७-६१-२६॥
"I do not wish to gamble, and Vidura does not approve of it. Saindhava is also not interested in gambling, and Bhishma does not wish to gamble either."
शल्यो भूरिश्रवाश्चैव पुरुमित्रो जयस्तथा। अश्वत्थामा कृपो द्रोणो द्यूतं नेच्छन्ति सञ्जय ॥७-६१-२७॥
Sañjaya, Śalya, Bhūriśravā, Purumitra, Jaya, Aśvatthāmā, Kṛpa, and Droṇa do not wish to gamble.
एतेषां मतमाज्ञाय यदि वर्तेत पुत्रकः। सज्ञातिमित्रः ससुहृच्चिरं जीवेदनामयः ॥७-६१-२८॥
If the son acts according to the opinion of these, he may live a long and healthy life with his relatives, friends, and companions.
श्लक्ष्णा मधुरसम्भाषा ज्ञातिमध्ये प्रियंवदाः। कुलीनाः संमताः प्राज्ञाः सुखं प्राप्स्यन्ति पाण्डवाः ॥७-६१-२९॥
The Pandavas, who are gentle, sweet-speaking, and kind-spoken among their relatives, noble, respected, and wise, will obtain happiness.
धर्मापेक्षो नरो नित्यं सर्वत्र लभते सुखम्। प्रेत्यभावे च कल्याणं प्रसादं प्रतिपद्यते ॥७-६१-३०॥
A man who disregards dharma consistently finds happiness in all aspects of life and, in the afterlife, he receives auspiciousness and divine grace.
अर्हन्त्यर्धं पृथिव्यास्ते भोक्तुं सामर्थ्यसाधनाः। तेषामपि समुद्रान्ता पितृपैतामही मही ॥७-६१-३१॥
They possess the capability and means to enjoy half of the earth. Their land, which is bounded by the ocean, is inherited from their ancestors and forefathers.
नियुज्यमानाः स्थास्यन्ति पाण्डवा धर्मवर्त्मनि। सन्ति नो ज्ञातयस्तात येषां श्रोष्यन्ति पाण्डवाः ॥७-६१-३२॥
The Pandavas, being engaged, will remain steadfast on the path of righteousness. Our dear relatives are those whom the Pandavas will hear about.
शल्यस्य सोमदत्तस्य भीष्मस्य च महात्मनः। द्रोणस्याथ विकर्णस्य बाह्लिकस्य कृपस्य च ॥७-६१-३३॥
The great warriors Śalya, Somadatta, Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Vikarṇa, Bāhlika, and Kṛpa were all present.
अन्येषां चैव वृद्धानां भरतानां महात्मनाम्। त्वदर्थं ब्रुवतां तात करिष्यन्ति वचो हितम् ॥७-६१-३४॥
The elders and great souls among the Bharatas will speak beneficial words for your sake, dear.
कं वा त्वं मन्यसे तेषां यस्त्वा ब्रूयादतोऽन्यथा। कृष्णो न धर्मं सञ्जह्यात्सर्वे ते च त्वदन्वयाः ॥७-६१-३५॥
Who among them do you think would contradict you? Krishna would never abandon righteousness, and all of them are your followers.
मयापि चोक्तास्ते वीरा वचनं धर्मसंहितम्। नान्यथा प्रकरिष्यन्ति धर्मात्मानो हि पाण्डवाः ॥७-६१-३६॥
I have also spoken to those heroes the words of righteousness. The righteous Pāṇḍavas will not act otherwise.
इत्यहं विलपन्सूत बहुशः पुत्रमुक्तवान्। न च मे श्रुतवान्मूढो मन्ये कालस्य पर्ययम् ॥७-६१-३७॥
Thus lamenting repeatedly, O Sūta, I spoke to my son many times. However, the foolish one did not listen to me; I believe it signifies the end of time.
वृकोदरार्जुनौ यत्र वृष्णिवीरश्च सात्यकिः। उत्तमौजाश्च पाञ्चाल्यो युधामन्युश्च दुर्जयः ॥७-६१-३८॥
Where Vrikodara and Arjuna are present, along with the Vrishni hero Satyaki, and the valiant warriors Uttamaujas, the Panchala prince Yudhamanyu, and Durjaya.
धृष्टद्युम्नश्च दुर्धर्षः शिखण्डी चापराजितः। अश्मकाः केकयाश्चैव क्षत्रधर्मा च सौमकिः ॥७-६१-३९॥
Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the invincible Śikhaṇḍī, and the unconquered ones like Aśmakas, Kekayas, along with Kṣatradharmā and Saumaki, were present.
चैद्यश्च चेकितानश्च पुत्रः काश्यस्य चाभिभुः। द्रौपदेया विराटश्च द्रुपदश्च महारथः ॥ यमौ च पुरुषव्याघ्रौ मन्त्री च मधुसूदनः ॥७-६१-४०॥
Caidya, Cekitana, the son of Kāśya named Abhibhu, the sons of Draupadī, Virāṭa, and the great chariot-warrior Drupada, along with the twins who are tigers among men, and the minister Madhusūdana (Kṛṣṇa) were present.
क एताञ्जातु युध्येत लोकेऽस्मिन्वै जिजीविषुः। दिव्यमस्त्रं विकुर्वाणान्संहरेयुररिंदमाः ॥७-६१-४१॥
Who in this world would ever dare to fight, indeed desiring to live, against these wielding divine weapons, as the subduers of enemies would destroy them.
अन्यो दुर्योधनात्कर्णाच्छकुनेश्चापि सौबलात्। दुःशासनचतुर्थानां नान्यं पश्यामि पञ्चमम् ॥७-६१-४२॥
I see no one else as the fifth apart from Duryodhana, Karna, Shakuni, and Duhshasana, who are the four.
येषामभीशुहस्तः स्याद्विष्वक्सेनो रथे स्थितः। संनद्धश्चार्जुनो योद्धा तेषां नास्ति पराजयः ॥७-६१-४३॥
Those whose charioteer is Viṣvaksena, standing firm with a strong grip, and who have Arjuna as their armed warrior, cannot be defeated.
तेषां मम विलापानां न हि दुर्योधनः स्मरेत्। हतौ हि पुरुषव्याघ्रौ भीष्मद्रोणौ त्वमात्थ मे ॥७-६१-४४॥
Duryodhana does not remember my lamentations about them. You told me that the great warriors, Bhishma and Drona, have been slain.
तेषां विदुरवाक्यानामुक्तानां दीर्घदर्शिनाम्। दृष्ट्वेमां फलनिर्वृत्तिं मन्ये शोचन्ति पुत्रकाः ॥७-६१-४५॥
The sons lament, thinking about the wise words spoken by the far-sighted, after seeing this outcome.
हिमात्यये यथा कक्षं शुष्कं वातेरितो महान्। अग्निर्दहेत्तथा सेनां मामिकां स धनञ्जयः ॥७-६१-४६॥
At the end of winter, just as a great fire consumes dry grass carried by the wind, so too would Arjuna destroy my army.
आचक्ष्व तद्धि नः सर्वं कुशलो ह्यसि सञ्जय। यदुपायात्तु सायाह्ने कृत्वा पार्थस्य किल्बिषम् ॥ अभिमन्यौ हते तात कथमासीन्मनो हि वः ॥७-६१-४७॥
Sanjaya, please narrate everything to us, as you are knowledgeable. How was your state of mind, dear, after committing the sin against Partha in the evening, when Abhimanyu was killed?
न जातु तस्य कर्माणि युधि गाण्डीवधन्वनः। अपकृत्वा महत्तात सोढुं शक्ष्यन्ति मामकाः ॥७-६१-४८॥
O great one, my men will never be able to withstand the actions of the wielder of the Gandiva bow in battle.
किं नु दुर्योधनः कृत्यं कर्णः कृत्यं किमब्रवीत्। दुःशासनः सौबलश्च तेषामेवं गते अपि ॥ सर्वेषां समवेतानां पुत्राणां मम सञ्जय ॥७-६१-४९॥
Sanjaya, tell me what Duryodhana said about Karna's actions. What did Duhshasana and Saubala say in this situation, among all my gathered sons?
यद्वृत्तं तात सङ्ग्रामे मन्दस्यापनयैर्भृशम्। लोभानुगतदुर्बुद्धेः क्रोधेन विकृतात्मनः ॥७-६१-५०॥
Father, what transpired in the battle was greatly influenced by the removal of the foolish, driven by greed and anger, of those with distorted souls and evil minds.
राज्यकामस्य मूढस्य रागोपहतचेतसः। दुर्नीतं वा सुनीतं वा तन्ममाचक्ष्व सञ्जय ॥७-६१-५१॥
Sanjaya, tell me whether it is a good or bad policy for one who is foolish, desirous of kingdom, and whose mind is overcome by passion.
