dhṛtarāṣṭra uvāca॥
Dhritarashtra said:
śvobhūte kim akārṣus te duḥkhaśokasamanvitāḥ। abhimanyau hate tatra ke vāyudhyanta māmakāḥ ॥7-61-1॥
When the next day arrived, what actions did they take, overwhelmed with sorrow and grief? After Abhimanyu was slain, who among my people continued to fight?
jānantastasya karmāṇi kuravaḥ savyasācinaḥ। kathaṃ tatkilbiṣaṃ kṛtvā nirbhayā brūhi māmakāḥ ॥7-61-2॥
Knowing the actions of Arjuna and the Kurus, how can my people speak fearlessly after committing such a sin?
putraśokābhisantaptaṃ kruddhaṃ mṛtyumivāntakam। āyāntaṃ puruṣavyāghraṃ kathaṃ dadṛśurāhave ॥7-61-3॥
Tormented by the grief of his son and filled with anger like the destroyer Death, how did they perceive the approaching tiger among men in the battle?
kapirājadhvajaṃ saṅkhye vidhunvānaṃ mahaddhanuḥ। dṛṣṭvā putraparidyūnaṃ kimakurvanta māmakāḥ ॥7-61-4॥
Upon seeing the banner of the monkey king wielding a great bow in battle, my people, distressed for their son, wondered what action to take.
kiṁ nu sañjaya saṅgrāme vṛttaṁ duryodhanaṁ prati। paridevo mahānattra śruto me nābhinandanam ॥7-61-5॥
Sanjaya, what indeed happened in the battle concerning Duryodhana? I heard a great lamentation here, which was not pleasing to me.
babhūvur ye manogrāhyāḥ śabdāḥ śrutisukhāvahāḥ। na śrūyante'dya te sarve saindhavasya niveśane ॥7-61-6॥
The sounds that were once pleasing and understandable are no longer heard today in the house of the Saindhava.
stuvatāṃ nādya śrūyante putrāṇāṃ śibire mama। sūtamāgadhasaṅghānāṃ nartakānāṃ ca sarvaśaḥ ॥7-61-7॥
Today, in my sons' camp, the sounds of praise from the bards, heralds, and dancers are completely absent.
śabdena nāditābhīkṣṇamabhavadyatra me śrutiḥ। dīnānāmadya taṃ śabdaṃ na śṛṇomi samīritam ॥7-61-8॥
My hearing was intensely resounded by the sound where it happened. Today, I do not hear that sound produced by the distressed.
niveśane satyadhṛteḥ somadattasya sañjaya। āsīno'haṃ purā tāta śabdam aśrauṣam uttamam ॥7-61-9॥
O Sañjaya, while seated in the abode of Satyadhṛti, I once heard an excellent sound, O father.
tadadya hīnapuṇyo'hamārtasvaranināditam। niveśanaṃ hatotsāhaṃ putrāṇāṃ mama lakṣaye ॥7-61-10॥
Today, I see my sons' home filled with the echoes of distress, lacking in virtue and enthusiasm.
viviṃśaterdurmukhasya citrasenavikarṇayoḥ। anyeṣāṃ ca sutānāṃ me na tathā śrūyate dhvaniḥ ॥7-61-11॥
The sound of my sons, including Durmukha, Citraseṇa, and Vikarṇa, among the twenty, is not heard as much as that of others.
brāhmaṇāḥ kṣatriyā vaiśyā yaṃ śiṣyāḥ paryupāsate। droṇaputraṃ maheṣvāsaṃ putrāṇāṃ me parāyaṇam ॥7-61-12॥
Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and Vaishyas worship Drona's son, the great archer, as the ultimate refuge for my sons.
vitaṇḍālāpasaṁlāpairhutayācitavanditaiḥ। gītaiśca vividhairiṣṭai ramate yo divāniśam ॥7-61-13॥
He who delights day and night in futile arguments, conversations, offerings, requests, praises, and various desired songs.
upāsyamāno bahubhiḥ kurupāṇḍavasātvataiḥ। sūta tasya gṛhe śabdho nādya drauṇeryathā purā ॥7-61-14॥
O charioteer, today the sound in his house is not as it used to be before when he was worshipped by many, including the Kuru, Pandava, and Satvata.
droṇaputraṃ maheṣvāsaṃ gāyanā nartakāśca ye। atyarthamupatiṣṭhanti teṣāṃ na śrūyate dhvaniḥ ॥7-61-15॥
The sound of the son of Droṇa, the great archer, along with the singers and dancers who attend excessively, is not heard.
vindānuvindayoḥ sāyaṃ śibire yo mahādhvaniḥ। śrūyate so'dya na tathā kekayānāṃ ca veśmasu ॥7-61-16॥
The usual great sound heard in the evening in the camp of Vinda and Anuvinda is not as prominent today in the houses of the Kekayas.
nityapramuditānāṃ ca tālagītasvano mahān। nṛtyatāṃ śrūyate tāta gaṇānāṃ so'dya na dhvaniḥ ॥7-61-17॥
The joyous and rhythmic sounds of singing and dancing, which were always heard, O dear, are not heard today from the groups.
saptatantūn vitanvānā yam upāsanti yājakāḥ। saumadattiṃ śrutanidhiṃ teṣāṃ na śrūyate dhvaniḥ ॥7-61-18॥
The priests who spread the seven threads worship Saumadatti, the treasure of knowledge, but their sound is not heard.
jyāghoṣo brahmaghoṣaśca tomarāsirathadhvaniḥ। droṇasyāsīdavirato gṛhe tanna śṛṇomyaham ॥7-61-19॥
I do not hear the unceasing sounds of bowstrings, sacred chants, lances, swords, and chariots in Drona's house.
nānādeśasamutthānāṃ gītānāṃ yo'bhavatsvanaḥ। vāditranāditānāṃ ca so'dya na śrūyate mahān ॥7-61-20॥
The great sound of songs and musical instruments that once arose from various regions is not heard today.
yadā prabhṛtyupaplavācchāntimicchañjanārdanaḥ। āgataḥ sarvabhūtānāmanukampārthamacyutaḥ ॥7-61-21॥
When Janardana, desiring peace from the turmoil, came out of compassion for all creatures, Acyuta.
tato'ham abruvaṁ sūta mandaṁ duryodhanaṁ tadā। vāsudevena tīrthena putra saṁśāmya pāṇḍavaiḥ ॥7-61-22॥
Then I slowly addressed Sūta, saying, 'O Duryodhana, my son, make peace with the Pāṇḍavas through the pilgrimage guided by Vāsudeva.'
kālaprāptamahaṃ manye mā tvaṃ duryodhanātigāḥ। śame cedyācamānaṃ tvaṃ pratyākhyāsyasi keśavam ॥ hitārthamabhijalpantaṃ na tathāstyaparājayaḥ ॥7-61-23॥
I believe it is the right time; do not go beyond Duryodhana. If you refuse Keshava, who is pleading for peace and speaking for the benefit, then there is no defeat.
pratyācaṣṭa sa dāśārhamṛṣabhaṃ sarvadhanvinām। anuneyāni jalpantamanayānnānvapadyata ॥7-61-24॥
He spoke to the leader of the Dasharhas, the foremost among archers, with words of conciliation, but did not adhere to any improper suggestions.
tato duḥśāsanasyaiva karṇasya ca mataṃ dvayoḥ। anvavartata hitvā māṃ kṛṣṭaḥ kālena durmatiḥ ॥7-61-25॥
Then, the evil-minded person, influenced by time, ignored me and followed the counsel of Duḥśāsana and Karṇa.
na hyahaṁ dyūtamicchāmi viduro na praśaṁsati। saindhavo necchate dyūtaṁ bhīṣmo na dyūtamicchati ॥7-61-26॥
"I do not wish to gamble, and Vidura does not approve of it. Saindhava is also not interested in gambling, and Bhishma does not wish to gamble either."
śalyo bhūriśravāścaiva purumitro jayastathā। aśvatthāmā kṛpo droṇo dyūtaṃ necchanti sañjaya ॥7-61-27॥
Sañjaya, Śalya, Bhūriśravā, Purumitra, Jaya, Aśvatthāmā, Kṛpa, and Droṇa do not wish to gamble.
eteṣāṃ matamājñāya yadi varteta putrakaḥ। sajñātimitraḥ sasuhṛcciraṃ jīvedanāmayaḥ ॥7-61-28॥
If the son acts according to the opinion of these, he may live a long and healthy life with his relatives, friends, and companions.
ślākṣṇā madhurasambhāṣā jñātimadhye priyaṃvadāḥ। kulīnāḥ saṃmatāḥ prājñāḥ sukhaṃ prāpsyanti pāṇḍavāḥ ॥7-61-29॥
The Pandavas, who are gentle, sweet-speaking, and kind-spoken among their relatives, noble, respected, and wise, will obtain happiness.
dharmāpekṣo naro nityaṃ sarvatra labhate sukham। pretyabhāve ca kalyāṇaṃ prasādaṃ pratipadyate ॥7-61-30॥
A man who disregards dharma consistently finds happiness in all aspects of life and, in the afterlife, he receives auspiciousness and divine grace.
arhantyardhaṃ pṛthivyāste bhoktuṃ sāmarthyasādhanāḥ। teṣāmapi samudrāntā pitṛpaitāmahī mahī ॥7-61-31॥
They possess the capability and means to enjoy half of the earth. Their land, which is bounded by the ocean, is inherited from their ancestors and forefathers.
niyujyamānāḥ sthāsyanti pāṇḍavā dharmavartmani। santi no jñātayastāta yeṣāṃ śroṣyanti pāṇḍavāḥ ॥7-61-32॥
The Pandavas, being engaged, will remain steadfast on the path of righteousness. Our dear relatives are those whom the Pandavas will hear about.
śalyasya somadattasya bhīṣmasya ca mahātmanaḥ। droṇasyātha vikarṇasya bāhlikasya kṛpasya ca ॥7-61-33॥
The great warriors Śalya, Somadatta, Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Vikarṇa, Bāhlika, and Kṛpa were all present.
anyeṣāṃ caiva vṛddhānāṃ bharatānāṃ mahātmanām। tvadarthaṃ bruvatāṃ tāta kariṣyanti vaco hitam ॥7-61-34॥
The elders and great souls among the Bharatas will speak beneficial words for your sake, dear.
kaṁ vā tvaṁ manyase teṣāṁ yastvā brūyādato'nyathā। kṛṣṇo na dharmaṁ sañjahyātsarve te ca tvadanvayāḥ ॥7-61-35॥
Who among them do you think would contradict you? Krishna would never abandon righteousness, and all of them are your followers.
mayāpi coktāste vīrā vacanaṃ dharmasaṃhitam। nānyathā prakariṣyanti dharmātmāno hi pāṇḍavāḥ ॥7-61-36॥
I have also spoken to those heroes the words of righteousness. The righteous Pāṇḍavas will not act otherwise.
ityahaṁ vilapansūta bahuśaḥ putramuktavān। na ca me śrutavānmūḍho manye kālasya paryayam ॥7-61-37॥
Thus lamenting repeatedly, O Sūta, I spoke to my son many times. However, the foolish one did not listen to me; I believe it signifies the end of time.
vṛkodarārjunau yatra vṛṣṇivīraśca sātyakiḥ। uttamaujāśca pāñcālyo yudhāmanyuśca durjayaḥ ॥7-61-38॥
Where Vrikodara and Arjuna are present, along with the Vrishni hero Satyaki, and the valiant warriors Uttamaujas, the Panchala prince Yudhamanyu, and Durjaya.
dhṛṣṭadyumnaś ca durdharṣaḥ śikhaṇḍī cāparājitaḥ। aśmakāḥ kekayāś caiva kṣatradharmā ca saumakiḥ ॥7-61-39॥
Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the invincible Śikhaṇḍī, and the unconquered ones like Aśmakas, Kekayas, along with Kṣatradharmā and Saumaki, were present.
caidyaśca cekitānaśca putraḥ kāśyasya cābhibhuḥ। draupadeyā virāṭaśca drupadaśca mahārathaḥ ॥ yamau ca puruṣavyāghrau mantrī ca madhusūdanaḥ ॥7-61-40॥
Caidya, Cekitana, the son of Kāśya named Abhibhu, the sons of Draupadī, Virāṭa, and the great chariot-warrior Drupada, along with the twins who are tigers among men, and the minister Madhusūdana (Kṛṣṇa) were present.
ka etāñjātu yudhyeta loke'sminvai jijīviṣuḥ। divyam astraṃ vikurvāṇān saṃhareyur ariṃdamāḥ ॥7-61-41॥
Who in this world would ever dare to fight, indeed desiring to live, against these wielding divine weapons, as the subduers of enemies would destroy them.
anyo duryodhanātkarṇācchakuneścāpi saubalāt। duḥśāsanacaturthānāṃ nānyaṃ paśyāmi pañcamam ॥7-61-42॥
I see no one else as the fifth apart from Duryodhana, Karna, Shakuni, and Duhshasana, who are the four.
yeṣām abhīśuhastaḥ syād viṣvakseno rathe sthitaḥ। saṃnaddhaś cārjuno yoddhā teṣāṃ nāsti parājayaḥ ॥7-61-43॥
Those whose charioteer is Viṣvaksena, standing firm with a strong grip, and who have Arjuna as their armed warrior, cannot be defeated.
teṣāṃ mama vilāpānāṃ na hi duryodhanaḥ smaret। hatau hi puruṣavyāghrau bhīṣmadroṇau tvamāttha me ॥7-61-44॥
Duryodhana does not remember my lamentations about them. You told me that the great warriors, Bhishma and Drona, have been slain.
teṣāṃ viduravākyānāmuktānāṃ dīrghadarśinām। dṛṣṭvemāṃ phalanirvṛttiṃ manye śocanti putrakāḥ ॥7-61-45॥
The sons lament, thinking about the wise words spoken by the far-sighted, after seeing this outcome.
himātyaye yathā kakṣaṃ śuṣkaṃ vāterito mahān। agnirdahettathā senāṃ māmikāṃ sa dhanañjayaḥ ॥7-61-46॥
At the end of winter, just as a great fire consumes dry grass carried by the wind, so too would Arjuna destroy my army.
ācakṣva taddhi naḥ sarvaṁ kuśalo hyasi sañjaya। yadupāyāttu sāyāhne kṛtvā pārthasya kilbiṣam ॥ abhimanyau hate tāta kathamāsīnmano hi vaḥ ॥7-61-47॥
Sanjaya, please narrate everything to us, as you are knowledgeable. How was your state of mind, dear, after committing the sin against Partha in the evening, when Abhimanyu was killed?
na jātu tasya karmāṇi yudhi gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ। apakṛtvā mahattāta soḍhuṃ śakṣyanti māmakāḥ ॥7-61-48॥
O great one, my men will never be able to withstand the actions of the wielder of the Gandiva bow in battle.
kiṁ nu duryodhanaḥ kṛtyaṁ karṇaḥ kṛtyaṁ kimabravīt। duḥśāsanaḥ saubalaśca teṣāmevaṁ gate api ॥ sarveṣāṁ samavetānāṁ putrāṇāṁ mama sañjaya ॥7-61-49॥
Sanjaya, tell me what Duryodhana said about Karna's actions. What did Duhshasana and Saubala say in this situation, among all my gathered sons?
yadvṛttaṃ tāta saṅgrāme mandasyāpanayairbhṛśam। lobhānugatadurbuddheḥ krodhena vikṛtātmanaḥ ॥7-61-50॥
Father, what transpired in the battle was greatly influenced by the removal of the foolish, driven by greed and anger, of those with distorted souls and evil minds.
rājyakāmasya mūḍhasya rāgopahatacētasaḥ। durnītaṁ vā sunītaṁ vā tanmamācakṣva sañjaya ॥7-61-51॥
Sanjaya, tell me whether it is a good or bad policy for one who is foolish, desirous of kingdom, and whose mind is overcome by passion.
